ANNUAL REPORT 2013

The Jewish Federation funds & supports a comprehensive network of organizations that do two things: 1. Care for people in need here at home, in Israel and around the world. 2. Nurture and sustain the Jewish community today and for future generations. By working with a broad cross-section of community members to raise and distribute funds, we ensure that the programs, institutions and values that enrich our Jewish community remain vibrant and strong. From feeding the hungry to helping the 2

unemployed, from supporting families with special needs to funding Jewish education and Israel experiences, the Jewish Federation is focused on addressing the most pressing issues facing our community every day.

providing

life-saving relief

The walls of Michael Levin’s small Bethlehem apartment are covered with his own artwork, though he hasn’t created a new piece in years. Photos of his son are prominent on the refrigerator. The set-up is uniquely suited to Michael, and it has to be. It’s where the 56-year-old spends most of his time. His disability and the dozens of medications that he takes daily prevent him from working. In truth, his health continues to fail, though he soldiers on. But he knows he would never be able to manage alone. Fortunately, the staff and volunteers at Jewish Family Service of the Lehigh Valley, a Federation beneficiary agency, are there to provide assistance with food, medication and utility bills that sustain his meager lifestyle. “Where would I be without Jewish Family Service?” Michael ponders from the couch in his living room. “I would still be living in the woods.” Twenty-six years ago, while trying to help another man after a car accident, Michael was hit by a car going 55 miles an hour. When he woke up in the hospital six months later, his few possessions were packed up in boxes. He had nothing and nowhere to go.

6

“I went to whoever was the director at that time at Jewish Family Service and the first thing they said to me was what do you need? And I would go back and ask for things and they never said no to me, no matter what it was. If I needed food, they gave me gift cards. If I needed money … to get a rent paid or whatever the emergency was, they always stood up for me.”

building community Brie, 3, is dancing around the living room while Derek, 1, sporting a terrycloth blue bib with a “Shalom Baby” logo, is trying to keep up on his hands and knees. Toys overflow from every corner of the room. It’s a typical morning in the Finberg house. Later, the family will head over to the Jewish Community Center of Allentown, where the children are Early Chlidhood Education students and mom Robyn is president of the Parent Volunteer Organization. The Finbergs’ involvement in Jewish life in the Lehigh Valley has been on an upwards trajectory since their first visit from a Jewish Federation Women’s Division volunteer back in 2009 to welcome Brie into the Jewish community. Two years later, another baby, another visit. “They brought a big bag of fun things that were … great toys and little useful items. We got a fork and a spoon and all sorts of fun goodies that were able to kind of make us feel welcome to the community and welcoming our children to the community,” Robyn says. The Finbergs are among more than 125 babies that have been welcomed by the Shalom Baby program since its inception in 2005. For Robyn, the program also helped her form close friendships with other Jewish families. “It’s been wonderful to be part of this whole community. Especially with it I met one of my very dear friends through the Shalom Baby program at the reunion. She and I just started talking over actually her diaper bag. I was like, oh, I have that diaper bag, and she was like, oh, I love it, and we just kind of got talking and then we saw each other later and a whole friendship formed.”

promoting

jewish values

With cows, sunflowers and donkeys pulling carts, the mosaic depicts how life once was on the moshav, one of more than a dozen cooperative communities that make up the Yoav Regional Council in Israel. But it also speaks to where Yoav is going in the future. The painted tiles affixed to the community center wall are the work of a group of Bnai Mitzvah students and their families, part of a program funded by the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley through Partnership2Gether. “The idea is to make the parents and the kids talk and together think about a project that they want to run, they want to lead in their community,” says Ossy Halachmi Nir, who coordinates the Yoav-Lehigh Valley partnership in Israel, a program of the Jewish Agency for Israel. The Bnai Mitzvah project consists of five study sessions for the teens and their parents, which create a dialog on the values of the Bnai Mitzvah year and connect them to family and community life. The second component involves the planning and implementation of a community project, such as the mosaic. The mosaic took 2 ½ months to complete, with 20 people working at a time. But the council of the moshav has taken notice, building a rock wall around it and making it part of the park. “Every day, when they come to the basket yard, they see this wall, this is our wall,” says Merev Tzalach, one of the mothers who coordinated the project. “This is ours, we did it.”

...and around

the world

• Through the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, which works in more than 70 countries and in Israel to alleviate hunger and hardship, rescue Jews in danger, create lasting connections to Jewish life and provide immediate relief and long-term development support for victims of natural and man-made disasters.

• Through World ORT, which works for the advancement of the Jewish people through education and training for employment, to provide individuals worldwide with the skills and knowledge necessary to cope with

the challenges of their environment and to foster economic self-sufficiency, mobility and a sense of identity through the use of state-of-the-art technology.

• Through the Jewish Agency for Israel, which addresses the most pressing issues in Jewish life by working to inspire Jews throughout the world to connect with their people, heritage and land, and empower them to build a thriving Jewish future and strong Israel. The Agency pursues this goal by bringing young Jews to Israel for life-changing experiences through

programs like Masa Israel Journey and by involving them in social activism both in Israel and abroad. At the same time, the Jewish Agency facilitates aliyah for those who choose to make Israel their home, reconnects FSU Jewry with their Jewish roots, rescues Jews in distress and responds to global Jewish emergencies. • Through Taglit-Birthright Israel, which has given more than 340,000 young Jews from 62 countries meaningful Israel experiences that strengthen Jewish identity, Jewish communities and solidarity with Israel. 11

feeding the soul 17–year–old Elizaveta lives with her mother and grandmother in Minsk, Belarus, in a two–room apartment in a cabin–like house that is slated for demolition. The apartment is damp and moldy, and the furniture is old. Mother Marina works as a librarian at a local school and suffers from kidney disease, while grandmother Fulamif is retired. They struggle to meet the basic needs of “Liza,” who is a bright and active teenager, but is often sick. Enter Federation. Through our overseas partner, the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, we dispensed food packages and other humanitarian aid to the family. We also enabled Liza to attend family camps, clubs and most recently classes at the local Jewish community center in Minsk. In these classes, Liza learned about her family's Jewish heritage while she pursued her interests in drawing, theater and writing. She is a talented poet whose work has been published in the JCC newspaper. "I live in Belarus, not in Israel; there are few people like me here," Liza says. At the Jewish community house, though, "we were given all the information we needed to know who we are and what we are,” she says. Thanks to Federation, Liza now has an outlet for her passion and plans to pursue higher education before hopefully traveling to Israel on a Birthright trip. Despite her bright future, Liza doesn't plan on forgetting how and why she got there. "Mom and Grandma help me a lot and I am trying my best to help them. Without Federation, it would have been very difficult for my family to raise me."

emergency

campaigns

The Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley is part of a vast network of organizations throughout North America that can respond to crises anywhere in the world at a moment’s notice. In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy in October 2012, the Jewish Federations collectively raised more than $7 million for housing, health care, reconstruction and counseling. We acted on our Jewish values by funding Jewish education and camping for families hit by the storm. In November 2012, when rocket attacks into southern Israel from Gaza caused Israel to launch a military operation, the Federations disbursed $5 million to provide food, trauma counseling, financial aid and portable bomb shelters. We helped to rebuild damaged homes and brought thousands of children out of harm’s way. After devastating tornadoes hit Oklahoma City in May 2013, the Jewish Federations partnered with Catholic Charities to manage a distribution site for relief supplies in Norman, OK, for residents hit the hardest. That was only part of the wider Jewish Federations relief effort which raised more than $415,000.
