Studies have shown that one of the major reasons people don’t volunteer is that they were never asked. Consider this issue of Shalom Lehigh Valley to be your invitation to get involved.

There is an important relationship between volunteers and our community. Get involved and you are sure to learn more about your community and yourself.

As you page through SLV, take note of both the services that are available to you, as well as the wealth of opportunities for you to get involved, participate and/or volunteer.

Take an active role ... Take a class.

Attend a program. Help plan a project.

Go to Israel on a Federation mission.

Volunteer on Christmas Day for Meals on Wheels. Host an Israeli teen in your home. Participate in a community seder.

Be a youth group advisor. Teach Hebrew school. Drive an elderly member of the community to a doctor’s appointment.

When you got up this morning and looked in the mirror you saw a familiar person, yourself. Did you have a plan for your day? Did you know what you were doing and where you were going? If your day’s routine was to be just that, routine, was it truly satisfying and the best thing for you and the people you care about? If you were going to a new and unfamiliar place, why were you going there and, how were you going to find it?

Those were the sort of questions that the board of the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley (JFLV) asked in 2007 about our Jewish community. The leadership, under then-JFLV President Bobby Hammel and Executive Director Mark Goldstein, realized that the face in the mirror was not quite as recognizable as it once was. They were concerned that the plans and programs of the past might or might not be the best ones for the present and future. While no one has a crystal ball that can see into the future, the board knew that no predictions could be made , no direction taken, with any confidence, without accurate data. You have to know where you are if you want to have control over where you are going, so the board authorized a full community study of the Jewish population of the Lehigh Valley.

Nan Ronis and Wendy Born co-chaired the Community Study Steering Committee which was comprised of seventeen men and women representing the diversity of the community.

Dr. Ira Sheskin, Director of the Jewish Demographic Project and Associate Professor of Geography and Regional Studies at the University of Miami and, the preeminent Jewish Community demographer in North America, conducted the study.

Dr. Sheskin had led forty-two other such Jewish community surveys prior to coming to the Lehigh Valley. His experience and knowledge helped put define our community using the in depth data we collected and place context on the data in re-

lation to other communities throughout the United States..

Many months, many meetings and 537 interviews resulted in the Lehigh Valley Jewish Community Study 2008; a detailed compendium of data and interpretations of the community.

A 118 page executive summary of the study was presented to the community in May 2008. As the forward says, “It (the study) will be an invaluable source of information and data for the Jewish Federation, our partner agencies, area synagogues, and other local Jewish organizations, as well as our entire Jewish community…(but it) will only be as helpful to our community as is our willingness to use it wisely.”

When the Jewish community looks in the mirror, what does it see? What do we know about ourselves and how will we use that knowledge?

We see who we are through some of the most basic demographics. Out of the 9,800 people living in 4,000 Jewish households, approximately 8,000 are Jewish. The number of Jews in the Lehigh Valley has remained relatively stable with just a 7% decline since the last tally which was done in 1990. Approximately 102 Jewish households moved into the Valley during each of the recent past five years, while between 20-65 households moved out, resulting in a modest net gain. The decrease in numbers, however, may reflect more deaths than births in the existing households --not surprising, given that 23% of the people are age 65 or over. And although the study indicates that there appears to be a decreasing birth rate for our local population, the JFLV’s Shalom Baby initiative has welcomed 55 new babies in the past three years!

Another finding indicates the high level of education among adults over the age of 25. Fully 71% have a four-year college degree or higher with 37% holding graduate degrees.

The 2006 median household income was $86,000. On the other hand, 1.8% of households reported income below the Federal

poverty levels.

The report contains data that addresses both fact and opinion. Facts such as marital status (70% of adults in Jewish households are currently married; 16% single, never married; 7 % currently divorced and 6% currently widowed); intermarriage (36% of married couples in Jewish households intermarried); religious identification (4% of Jewish respondents identify as Orthodox; 34%, Conservative; 2%, Reconstructionist; 30% Reform; and 31% “Just Jewish” and religious practice (68% of households have a mezuzah on the front door).

Opinions range from attitudes of JFLV donors of $100 or more towards combating anti-Semitism (65%, very important); providing services to the elderly (62%, very important); supporting the people of Israel (55%, very important).

The report also addresses everything from children’s education, elder status and needs, familiarity and participation with various local Jewish organizations (synagogues, Jewish Community Center, Jewish Day School, Jewish Family Service), patterns of philanthropy, visits and attitudes towards Israel and media habits (63% of respondents read Hakol).

These responses have been analyzed and grouped into headings such as Major Findings and Major Themes -- themes that will be useful in understanding where we need to go and why.

In her speech on the night of her election as the new Federation president, Wendy Born likened using this study to using a GPS so “our community can find its way forward by developing a strategic plan – a road to an even stronger Jewish community.”

The strategic planning committee has begun this work under the leadership of Federation Vice Presidents Barry Halper and Mark Scoblionko. As Wendy told the audience that night, it is like a fortune cookie she recently read that said “The surest way to predict the future is to create it” and the strategic plan will help us accomplish this. The community study is already being used by individual agencies and synagogues to plot their courses, and will be used to provide an informed foundation to the development of our new strategic plan. It is also available to individuals who wish to know more about this rich Jewish community.

The Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley (JFLV) is the central address for the Jewish community of Allentown, Bethlehem, Easton and the surrounding area. It is where community building begins. Our network of services stretches from your neighborhood, across North America, to Israel and around the world. Working with our partner agencies and local programs, Federation nurtures and educates our children, maintains and strengthens family life, brings comfort and care to those in need and reinforces our connection to the worldwide Jewish community.

As the central address, the JFLV takes on many initiatives that are of benefit to the entire community. In 2007, it led the Lehigh Valley Jewish Community Study - and published the results in May 2008. Using the data collected from that study, the JFLV is working with area Jewish leadership to develop a strategic plan for our community, ensuring that we both recognize and address community realities, needs and priorities.

The JFLV’s Annual Campaign for Jewish Needs is the engine that drives the JFLV for the benefit of our community, raising funds and distributing grants. With the money raised

through the JFLV’s annual campaign and its endowment fund, the Lehigh Valley Jewish Foundation, the Federation provides funding to the Jewish Community Center of Allentown, the Jewish Day School of the Lehigh Valley, Jewish Family Service of the Lehigh Valley, Project Yachad, area Hillels and the Easton and Bethlehem Jewish communities. In addition, synagogues receive direct funding for Jewish family life education and scholar/artist-inresidence programs. The programs and services of our beneficiary agencies are highlighted in Shalom Lehigh Valley on separate pages.

As a member of the United Jewish Communities/Jewish Federations of North America, collectively, we also support the Jewish Agency for Israel (JAFI) and the Joint Distribution Committee (JDC).

The JFLV is part of a network of 157 Federations and 400 independent Jewish communities across North America The strength and structure of the national federation system positions us to be responsive in times of crisis, both with dollars and volunteers, providing support for the devastation of natural disasters; fighting back against antiSemitism; moral and humanitarian support in Israel at times of war; and speaking out against acts of genocide.

For example, raising money for the JFLV’s Annual Campaign for Jewish Needs is a volunteer-driven enterprise.

Hundreds of volunteers from across the Valley participate each year, reaching out to approximately 3,000 members of our community -- talking to donors and potential donors, shmoozing and meeting at community events, learning next to each other at education and outreach programs, providing information about how the annual campaign helps both the Lehigh Valley and worldwide Jewish community -- and listening to your concerns and interests. 

THE WOMEN’S DIVISION

Whether your interests lie in education, fundraising or community service, the Women’s Division offers you the chance to meet new people with similar interests. With diverse volunteer opportunities -- from hands on community service projects, to working on events and programs, to planning educational forums, to participating in the governing process as a board member -- Women’s Division affords its participants the opportunity to develop their skills as planners, facilitators, and leaders and to establish themselves in the community.

Today, women from all walks of life have discovered the satisfaction, fulfillment and powerful impact that comes from an individual commitment.

The Women’s Division Campaign raises nearly 40 percent of the total JFLV Annual Campaign for Jewish Needs, supporting Jewish programs and social services in the Lehigh Valley, Israel and in isolated Jewish communities around the world.

MAIMONIDES SOCIETY

The Maimonides Society -doctors, dentists and related healthcare professionals -started in the Lehigh Valley and grew into a national initiative. This network of committed healthcare workers support the Federation’s annual campaign and our community. They serve as hosts to visiting physicians from Israel, provide useful medical information in the Maimonides Minute, a monthly column in Hakol, sponsor programs of interest to the medical and general community, and donate equipment and funds to help meet medical needs in communities in Israel. In addition to their financial contributions, members serve the local community by providing

free medical care to those in need.

The Maimonides Society has an on-going relationship with the Western Galilee Hospital in Nahariya and with the medical professionals that serve our Partnership 2000 communities in the Yoav Regional Council.

Partnership 2000 is a joint initiative of the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley and the Yoav Regional Council

COMMUNITY RELATIONS COUNCIL (CRC) 

The CRC works to safeguard the Jewish community by advancing Jewish interests, promoting Jewish values and advocating on behalf of Jews at home and around the world. The CRC is the primary source of Israel advocacy in the Lehigh Valley, maintaining dynamic relationships with the local media and elected officials. They engage in interfaith dialogue, host panels with timely, topical themes on local, national and international politics and issues, and election forums. Together with the Institute for Jewish-Christian Understanding at Muhlenberg College, they co-sponsor the annual Prejudice Reduction Workshops for Middle and High School students in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding communities.



Honoring the values of tzedakah and tikkun olam, the Lehigh Valley Jewish Foundation (LVJF) is dedicated to collecting permanent resources to support Jewish causes and provide opportunities in our Jewish community. Last year, the LVJF distributed over $525,000 in grants to support critical causes including Jewish education and programming, senior and social services, and prejudice reduction. The LVJF works with donors as their partner in Jewish philanthropy to help them achieve their charitable goals and benefit from significant tax savings through planned giving. The LVJF also provides investment management and administration and endowment development services to several of our local Jewish agencies and institutions.

Endowments can be created in a variety of ways.

Funds for children under 18 can be created with a minimum of $1,000 and are a wonderful way to celebrate a simcha like a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, birthday or graduation; donor-advised funds start at $2,500; designated funds start at $10,000. A family interested in ensuring multigenerational Jewish philanthropy can establish a supporting foundation for a minimum of $100,000.

The easiest way to create an endowment is through the donation of cash or appreciated stock. You can make a commitment to create an endowment without having to pay during your lifetime through a bequest in your will.

Life insurance is a great way to satisfy an endowment commitment for relatively minimal cost, particularly if you are younger. You can also donate an existing policy.

If you are older and interested in a life income plan, you may consider a charitable gift annuity or trust, both of which offer generous payout rates and tax benefits.

Travel to Israel on an educational program with peers, such as a summer youth group trip or an academic semester abroad, has a lasting, positive impact on one’s Jewish identity. With a yearly pledge to the JFLV Annual Campaign, you may enroll your child in the VISIT program as early as 3rd grade. Each year, contribute at least $300 into

the VISIT savings account; it will be matched with $200 from the JFLV for up to a maximum of eight years. Your savings and match will add up to at least $4,000 to defray the cost of your child’s approved Israel travel program. A VISIT participant may use their funds from the summer after 9th grade until they are 25 years old.

Experienced, compassionate professionals help you make difficult decisions

with more confidence and ease. SeniorLink offers peace of mind, helping older adults to live safely and independently, with dignity and contentment.

After you contact JFS-LV about SeniorLink, a geriatric care manager will do an assessment of your needs and work with you to create an individualized care plan. We then assist you to implement this plan. Regular visits by our geriatric care manager facilitate your or your loved one’s well-being.

Case Management JFS-LV’s case management program provides and/or coordinates concrete resources to community members, links people to needed resources, assisting them through information, advocacy and referral. We also offer resettlement services to new Jewish refugees to the Lehigh Valley.

We offer expert counseling for stress management, depression, anxiety, phobias, bereavement, more successful relationships, lifespan adjustment, and many other concerns.

We also offer optional hypnotherapy by a licensed hypnotherapist as an adjunct to counseling or as a standalone treatment, if you desire.

Adoption: Domestic and International Adopting a child is an exciting venture, but can be challenging at times. JFS-LV can help you through the process. We provide pre- and post- adoption counseling and perform the home study required by Pennsylvania.

TALLIS WEAVING

SOMETHING SPECIAL IS LOOMING IN THE LEHIGH VALLEY You can weave you own tallis at Congregation Sons of Israel. The program, led by Elaine Atlas and Helen Besen, has been running for over 30 years. Eileen Ufberg is seen at the loom with her 17th tallis -- and the program’s 700th.

The actual weaving requires approximately 10 hours, divided into several sessions. Completing the Tallis with the fringes, atara and tzitzis will take about another 8-10 hours. The finished product will be a totally hand made unique product. Boys and girls have woven tallitot for their B’nai Mitzvot. Hand woven tallitot make meaningful and personal gifts. There is a fee for materials and for the use of the loom.

The early history of Bnai Abraham Synagogue is, in large part, also the history of the eastern European immigrants who settled in the Easton area in the late 19th century. Congregation Bnai Abraham has served the Easton Jewish community for over one hundred years.

Initially meeting in the homes of members, the earliest embodiment of Bnai Abraham incorporated the institutions of the mikvah (a ritual purification bath), a Talmud Torah (Hebrew School), a shohet to supervise the observance of kashrut (Jewish dietary laws), social organizations for men and women, and a Hevra Kaddisha (Burial Society). In 1907 the congregation hired its first Rabbi, and The Daughters of Rebecca was established to organize charitable, social and educational programs.

Today, we are an egalitarian congregation, so that men and women participate actively in the service and are counted toward the minyan, the quorum of ten Jews over the age of 13 needed for communal prayer.

All men, and those women who choose, wear a kippah or yarmulke (head covering) when in the Sanctuary as a sign of respect and humility before G-d. Adult Jewish males, and those women who choose, also wear a tallit (prayer shawl) to fulfill the biblical commandment to make fringes on the corners of their garments.

Today, Rabbi Mark Shrager guides Congregation Bnai Abraham with the teachings of Conservative Judaism. Bnai Abraham is affiliated with the United Synagogue of America. The synagogue serves the community as a house of prayer, a house of study, and as a community.

Shalom and welcome to Congregation Brith Sholom. We are an intimate (185-190 families), traditional, egalitarian synagogue that serves the Lehigh Valley. We are members of the United synagogue of Conservative Judaism.

We are a congregation who warmly welcomes one and all into our fold. Brith Sholom Past and Present Brith Sholom Community Center, the forerunner of Congregation Brith Sholom, was founded in 1924. The Center itself was formed from two local congregations which date back into the 1800s. The original building, located on the southwest corner of Brodhead and Packer Avenues next to Lehigh University, was sold to Lehigh in 1984. Our two-unit building, located in Hanover Township, Northampton County, opened in early 1986 and was expanded in 2003.

The sanctuary building includes the social halls, media center and main kitchen. The chapel building contains our daily chapel, classrooms, library, offices and kitchenette. The entire facility, including the bathrooms in both buildings, is accessible to the handicapped. The sanctuary and social halls are equipped with a hard-ofhearing system. Individual receivers are located in the book case at the south entrance. Adhering to the tenets of Conservative Judaism, Brith Sholom provides an educational and spiritual center that seeks to bring relevance to our religious traditions.

The Sanctuary The main sanctuary is intended to give the feeling of the old, wooden synagogues of Europe, which were destroyed by the Nazis during World War II. The wood was also used to give a feeling of warmth and ties in

naturally with the beautiful trees surrounding the synagogue.

The sloping ceiling brings attention to the central pulpit, which gives a feeling of “theater in the round” and is a unique element of synagogue architecture throughout the centuries.

The four large panels of stained glass come from our sanctuary in South Bethlehem. They are a tangible link to the history of our congregation.

The eternal light, above the ark, is an antique. Originally a gas-powered eternal light in a Moroccan synagogue, it fits comfortably into our sanctuary, which emphasizes the old and the new.

On the front of the ark is a customdesigned woven tapestry suggesting the revelation on Mount Sinai. Inside the ark are the Torah scrolls.

Holocaust Scroll During the Holocaust, the Nazis collected nearly all the Torah scrolls of the Jewish communities in Czechoslovakia. After World War II, the scrolls were brought to England for safekeeping. During the past 50 years most of these precious scrolls were distributed to synagogues worldwide as a reminder of the destroyed Jewish communities and of the way of life that existed before the Holocaust.

In 2004, Brith Sholom was most fortunate and privileged to receive one of these Torah scrolls, originally from Boskovice, the birthplace of the Ticho family, through the auspices of Jean and Charles Ticho.

Jewish adult residents in the Lehgih Valley identify themselves as follows: 34% as Conservative: 30% as Reform: 4% Orthodox: 2% as Reconstructionist 31% “Just Jewish.”

Over eighty years ago Temple Beth El was a little room and a big dream. On June 4, 1929, many of the young adults of Allentown’s four hundred Jewish families established a new temple dedicated to the principles of the Conservative movement. It was called Temple Beth El. Temple Beth El dedicated its home at 17th and Hamilton Streets on June 1, 1952. That location served us well for many years with active programming, service and leadership. In the late 1980s, a long range planning committee was created in order to project our congregation’s needs for the next fifty years. Some of the challenges we faced were potential

renovations, parking needs, and the changing demographics of our congregation.

In January 2006 we realized our vision as the congregation moved into its present home on Springhouse Road in South Whitehall Township. The new Temple building incorporates the beautiful stained glass as well as many other features from our previous building, and meets the needs of our growing, active congregation.

As an affiliate of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism, we maintain the rich heritage and tradition of Judaism interpreted in the light of modern times.

Jewish Family Education Jewish Family Education at Temple Beth El is a vibrant program seeking to empower the family as an essential agency for Jewish learning by strengthening the ability of family members to enhance the Jewishness of their lives. Jewish Family Education supports the family as a unit, no matter what the family composition and connects Jewish families one to another through Temple based programming and home based learning opportunities. For more than a century, Congregation Sons of Israel has been a bedrock institution of Torah and Jewish life for the Lehigh Valley. From the Russian, Polish and German immigrants of the late 19th century to the professors and professionals and service workers who compose much of today’s Lehigh Valley Jewish community, the members of Congregation Sons of Israel have always viewed this synagogue as a home for Prayer, Torah study and Community.

We offer creative programming for children of all ages, from Storytime with the Rabbi for 1-3 year olds to Bnei Akiva on Shabbat afternoons to NCSY activities for Junior High and High School students. We also present scholars in residence, and we frequently team up with other institutions, such as Project Yachad and the Maimonides Society of the Jewish Federation of the Lehigh Valley, to offer coordinated

Community We support a strong Chesed committee of volunteers who work to help out in times of need,

and a Social committee that keeps our community strong through popular social events. We have a “Tzedek” Social Action committee that works to help the greater community. Our membership also provides the volunteer staff needed to maintain community institutions, including the Lehigh Valley Kashrut Commission, the Lehigh Valley Community Mikvah, the Allentown Chevra Kadisha and the Allentown Eruv. Our Youth have Jewish social activities through Bnei Akiva and NCSY programming.

Congregation Sons of Israel serves a membership of approximately 225 families, as well as the broader Jewish community. One of our unique hallmarks is our commitment to reaching all Jews; we regularly advertise our programs to the entire community, and we design our classes as well as our davening to be a positive experience for all, regardless of background and education. We have achieved great success in this mission; Jews of all backgrounds frequent our synagogue, and at least 25% of our membership identifies itself as something other than Orthodox, and yet comes to us for davening and learning and community.

Our synagogue has been led by Rabbi Mordechai Torczyner since June of 2001. Rabbi Torczyner, ordained

by Yeshiva University’s RIETS and a member of the RCA Executive Committee, is the latest in a long line of rabbis to uphold our tradition of outreach and education. With Rabbi Torczyner’s commitment to creative programming and his warm approach to newcomers, we have seen continued growth and vibrancy in our congregation. Am Haskalah Religious School Congregation Am Haskalah’s religious school provides our children with a quality Jewish education in a fun, open and supportive atmosphere that encourages and depends on high parental involvement. The Reconstructionist Movement The Reconstructionist movement has been one of the pioneers of women’s equality in Jewish congregational life and worship, and Am Haskalah was the first congregation in Allentown to hire a female rabbi back in 1983. Rabbi Rachel Weiss will join Congregation Am Haskalah in August 2009 after having completed her studies at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College (RRC).

A 1998 graduate of Grinnell College in spanish and Gender Studies, she speaks four languages and has an interest in visual arts. Rabbi Weiss and her partner julia Tauber and their daughter Hannah are excited to join the Allentown community.

Am Haskalah is a spiritual, multigenerational community – one in which individuals, couples, and families come together for learning, prayer, life-cycle events, music, creative arts, sharing food, mutual support, and friendship. Temple Covenant of Peace is a comfortable religious home for a very diverse congregation, including families with or without children, single-parent families, couples and unmarried individuals including those who are widowed or divorced and interfaith couples and families. Our services combine the best of the traditional and reform liturgy. Students are enrolled in the Religious School from Kindergarten to Confirmation. The Easton Jewish community is one of the oldest in the country. Its first Jewish settlers predate the Revolution, arriving in 1750.

Temple Covenant of Peace is the third oldest synagogue in Pennsylvania and the tenth oldest in the United States. It was founded in 1839, and early membership was predominantly of German origin. Sermons, in fact, were given in German until the end of the century. The original building was, until 1959, the oldest synagogue in continuous use - 117 years.

Temple Covenant of Peace moved into its current residence in 1959 and was dedicated on November 27 of that year. The building contains a modern sanctuary (which seats 154 and can be expanded to 210 with added chairs), seven classrooms, adult and children’s libraries, a social hall (which can

accommodate up to 275 people) and kitchen facilities.

The architect of the building was Daniel Schwartzman of New York who accepted the challenge to build a small structure after he had built mammoth ones in Europe and in this country.

In the Temple, the Eternal Light and pulpit Menorah in the Sanctuary were produced by Ludwig Wolpert, distinguished German-refugee sculptor associated with the Jewish Museum in New York City. The woven ark covering was designed by Sam Weiner, Jr.; the Torah covers were designed and fabricated by Beth Arigah of Philadelphia.

Today, Temple Covenant of Peace is an expanding congregation, enjoying the influx of many new families into the greater Lehigh Valley from the Poconos and New Jersey. All are invited to worship together with us.

CHABAD HEBREW SCHOOL Imagine a Hebrew School where kids don’t want to miss a day. They come in with a smile and leave humming a Hebrew song. Welcome to Chabad Hebrew School, an exciting and innovative educational program.

Our Hebrew School enjoys a wellearned reputation as a trendsetter in creative Jewish education for children ages four to thirteen. Chabad Hebrew School has exciting new programs, a dynamic staff and many new students.

Our student body is made up of children from various backgrounds and affiliations and Synagogue membership is not required. This year we are proud to announce two new areas in our school, an Advanced Aleph-Champ & Hebrew Language Course.

Goals for our Hebrew School: Firstly, we strive to instill in our students a strong pride in their Jewish identity. In order to foster this pride one must have knowledge of our history and the role we will play in the future as the Jewish people.

Secondly, our children must be educated Jews. They must also know the laws and customs of Jewish life so that they may in turn pass it on to their children, thereby keeping the chain of Jewish tradition alive.

Most importantly, we are proud of the warm atmosphere, creative and innovative teaching styles that ensure that the students look forward to coming each week.

GAN YELADIM - PRESCHOOL Where learning is interesting, exciting and stimulating through a hands on approach.

We provide for physical, intellectual and emotional growth through drama, visual aides, manipulative’s and art.

The children will be encouraged to use their senses to explore, experiment and use their imagination to the fullest.

Our curriculum is at the forefront of a constantly changing educational environment. Our children learn many skills. At the same time, they learn something more. They learn the “specialness” of being a Jew through song and dance, through stories and discussions, the precious legacy of their uniqueness as Jews is transmitted.

We will be following an integrated curriculum blending Hebrew Alphabet & Judaica with the wonders of the world in which we live.

Volunteer for the therapeutic riding program at Manito Equestrian Center in Allentown and sponsor classes for a child with special needs at one of the therapeutic riding centers in Israel.

DEVOTED TO DANCE?

Set up a scholarship for a local dance school and collect dance shoes for dance students in the FSU

CRAZY ABOUT SPORTS?

Provide underprivileged teens with an opportunity to attend an Iron Pigs game and collect sports equipment for a community center forr underprivileged youth in Israel.

The national UJC Pomegranate recognition pin program began in Lehigh Valley For nearly twenty-five years, the Pomegranate Pin has been the symbol for recognition of a woman’s commitment to the JFLV Annual Campaign. This special campaign recognition gift started in the Lehigh Valley. Now more than 110 Federations in thirty-five states throughout the country participate in the Pomegranate Pin Program. Today more than 5,000 women proudly wear this pin.

The pomegranate was chosen for the design of the beautiful sterling silver pin because according to Jewish tradition, the number of seeds in a pomegranate is 613, one for each of the 613 Mitzvot noted in the Torah.

Through each woman’s generous support, the Jewish Federation continues to be able to strengthen Jewish identity locally, support Jews in Israel, the former Soviet Union and worldwide, and meet the needs that are unique to the obligation of our Jewish community.

Women in the Lehigh Valley are awarded a Pomegranate Pin in recognition of a gift of $1,800 or more to the Annual Campaign, annual campaign increases are rewarded with the addition of a ruby.

In addition, Lehigh also has a writer-in-residence, teaching courses on Jewish literature and creative writing.

Lehigh’s Jewish Studies minor offers more than 25 courses that explore the history, religion, literature, and culture of the Jewish people. The classroom experience is enhanced by a series of lectures, films, seminars, exhibits, and conferences sponsored by the Berman Center. The public is encouraged to attend all our events.

As an outreach and education organization, the HRC is available to assist all segments of the community, both in the Jewish community and the community at large. jewish community resources artifacts and art dealing with the subject of the Holocaust and the times and circumstances around it, as well as books and curricula dealing with anti-Semitism, hate crimes, genocide and overcoming oppression are available to the public.

Most materials may be checked out free of charge. The HRC provides research assistance and a speaker’s bureau on all of the above subjects. The HRC also helps to assist with workshops dealing with the Holocaust and tolerance training through the public schools, and coordinates teacher training workshops.

The HRC, along with the Charles Klein B’nai B’rith Lodge and the Jewish Federation, sponsors the annual Alice Eckardt Writing and Visual Arts Contest for middle and high school students in the Lehigh Valley.

The materials are housed at the Holocaust Resource Center, located in the lower level of the Allentown JCC; the collection and services are staffed

by Shari Spark. Many of the materials

Over two-thirds of the Jewish students on campus are active in Hillel, making it the largest student club of any kind on campus. Muhlenberg College offers a warm and welcoming Jewish campus life. While synagogues and a school are of the utmost importance, they alone are not enough. The Hebrew Family League has established and maintains the other required institutions: mikvah, kashruth supervision and chevrah kadisha. The Hebrew Family League plays a Valley-wide role in all three of these areas.

Mikvah: The Lehigh Valley Community Mikvah, a division of the Hebrew Family League, has served our community since 1963. Our new location on College Heights Blvd. in Allentown has been open for two years, and receives regular use by Jews of all denominations and affiliations. Jews from across the Lehigh Valley and beyond use our Mikvah for purposes as varied as conversion, taharat hamishpachah, and celebration of momentous lifecycle events. The Mikvah space combines a spa aesthetic with functionality and a rigorous halachic design. Lehigh Valley Kashruth Commission (LVKC): This committee of the Hebrew Family League provides Kashruth supervision for the Jewish Community Center and a number of private establishments in the Lehigh Valley. The buildings are designed to accommodate elderly and mobilityimpaired persons. A person who wishes to live at the B’nai B’rith Apartments must either be sixty two years of age or older or a mobility impaired person who requires the special features of a wheelchair accessible apartment and is eighteen years of age or older.

The B’nai B’rith Apartments are run by an on-site staff consisting of the management staff and maintenance personnel. The management staff, in conjunction with the tenants’ organization, strives to provide the residents with many opportunities for socialization -- bingo nights, bus trips, exercise classes, plays and movies, religious services and many others. The management staff also works closely with local organizations to assist the tenants in obtaining needed services.

The complex is governed by the Allentown B’nai B’rith Housing Corporation, a non-profit volunteer Board of Directors comprised of men and women from various backgrounds and a representative from the Tenants’ Association. JWV Post 239 is currently working to develop programs aimed at helping our veterans (including troops currently in service). B’NAI B’RITH YOUTH ORGANIZATION (BBYO) BBYO is the world’s leading pluralistic Jewish youth movement for teens in grades 9-12. the chapter level. There are many hundreds of local NCSY chapters across the country which offer educational and social events for Jewish teens. All chapters are part of an NCSY Region.

There are 12 NCSY Regions in North America. Each region runs programs bringing together the various chapters within its geographical area. The Allentown chapter is a part of the Etz Chaim region, which also includes many chapters in New Jersey.

NCSY’s history dates back to the 1950s when chapters around the country began to form and were slowly woven into a national organization with well defined Halachic standards (standards set by Jewish Law.) Today, NCSY reaches out to both public school and yeshiva students who wish to increase their commitment to Judaism. It is not rare to find second generation NCSYers at NCSY events around the country.

More exciting than it’s past, however, is NCSY’s future. Still growing every year, NCSY is constantly adding new members and developing in new communities.

Mall Scavenger Hunts, and other fun programs. We participate in Schule-In’s, Dances, USY Regional Conventions, International Conventions and other larger events.

Our USY chapter has a governing board with elected positions that nurtures leadership in it’s members, and encourages responsible roles in the planning and executing of programs and fund-raising activities.

We provide the youth of our congregation, and affiliated organizations, with the opportunity to participate in local services to the community (from visits to retirement homes and other outreach programs), our synagogue (providing various involvements in youth-directed religious services, to temple members, the religious school and other groups having needs) and individuals.

We raise tzedakah for national, regional and local needs and help nurture those younger than us by encouraging them to participate in KADIMA. Our governing board includes a Mem/KAD (Membership/ KADIMA) position indicating the importance of this relationship.

Here’s another trail to add to Pennsylvania’s long list of them…but this one’s got treats! The Lehigh Valley Wine Trail promotes eight local family-owned wineries and organizes special events—like the Nouveau Weekend in late November, which celebrates the new harvest, and March Madness, a more refined all-day wine binge. While not quite like touring the famed Napa Valley or France’s Bourdeaux, this trail is an excellent, upscale (but inexpensive) weekend outing.

After sampling a glass or two (or three or four…), you’ll feel like you’re in California or France anyway. Cheers!

When picturing a “downtown,” charming rows of historical buildings with candle-lit windows don’t typically come to mind. But that’s just what you’ll find in historic Bethlehem. A mix of storefronts, offices and Moravian Church buildings transport visitors back 250 years—with plenty of up-to-date restaurants, boutiques and antique shops. It’s also a real-life example of urban revitalization: Bethlehem officials and citizens successfully reinvented this once rundown area into one of the busiest downtown areas in the Lehigh Valley. Try and time your next trip during a weekend fair or summer’s MusikFest. The city’s Southside is younger and edgier, with eateries and bars, coffee houses, shops, galleries, tattoo parlors and the Banana Factory—all crowded between the Lehigh River, the former site of Bethlehem Steel and the steep-sloped Lehigh University.

Jim Thorpe, originally Mauch Chunk but renamed for the great Olympian, is aflame with color in the fall bursts into fiery life in the fall. Tucked in a steep valley along a sharp bend in the Lehigh River, Jim Thorpe’s breathtaking forest-peak beauty encircles a stately Victorian village—the setting for the 1970s classic The Molly Maguires. Jim Thorpe’s mines closed down decades ago, sending the once booming coal town into a tailspin, but adventure-seeking tourists have long since replaced the miners. Shops, B&Bs, galleries, swanky restaurant, a restored opera house and the old jail house fil the meandering, sloped streets. Before heading for the hills, be sure to tour the regal Asa Packer Mansion, a monument to Victorian excess once home to the fabulously wealthy coal magnate. But head for the hills you must: For all its gabled charm, Jim Thorpe’s real draw is its stunning surroundings, with abundant hiking, biking, fishing, river rafting, and even paintballing. Take the narrowgauge, aptly named Switchback Railroad up a steep slope for panoramic views of the mountain-squeezed village. You’ll understand why the town has earned its nickname, “The Switzerland of America.”

GOING GREEN IN THE VALLEY state parks

For most of the secular world, “going green” is a new concept, but for thousands of years, Jewish tradition has taught us and commanded us to treat the earth and all its inhabitants with compassion. The Torah and Talmud are replete with examples and directives on the importance of caring for the world. Midrash Ecclesiastes Rabbah (7:13) says, “When Gd created Adam, Gd led him around all of the trees in the Garden of Eden. Gd told him, ‘See how beautiful and praiseworthy are all of my works. Everything I have created has been created for your sake. Think of this and do not corrupt the world; for if you corrupt it, there will be no one to set it right after you.’” Bal Tashchit (thou shalt not destroy) is the prohibition
