General Director’s Letter

Our Mission today really is our North Star. More than ever, we look to our Mission as our reminder of our purpose for being, and our light in this dark time to guide us forward. Our Mission holds us together as a community and keeps us focused in the face of this worldwide COVID-19 pandemic.

Students, teachers, principals, parents, staff and alumni, have all shown the great capacity that we have to lead and unite in unexpected and difficult situations. We’ve been capable of adapting and our flexibility has permitted us to serve each other and our families, as well as others. Parents and teachers have gone well beyond their normal roles, caring and loving our students, learning from each other and supporting the needs of the other.

Beauty itself has been seen throughout this time, from the incredible union and companionship to the capacity to create and innovate among students and teachers. The opportunity for many of us to discover new talents has permitted us to start each day thankful and appreciative of all that is good in our fortunate lives.

The creation of beauty is always present at JFK, and like the flowers that are returning to the roadside and the birds that sing louder in the trees, it would take more than this pandemic to silence the energy and creativeness of this extraordinary community.

All of this and more makes the JFK Community Achieve the Extraordinary.

Achieving the Extraordinary

Another quarantine day, has come and gone away, in Paris and Rome, and I am still stuck at home! Paraphrasing Michael Bublé seems silly but taking the situation in stride with a bit of humor has become my best coping mechanism. I also started wondering how other expats are surviving quarantine, so I reached out to some of the international community from Kennedy to find out more.

At first, the feelings of anxiety, worry, concern, and uncertainty were unanimous alongside an addiction to the news that did nothing but exacerbate stress levels.

Then, things started to slowly fall into place. Adjusting to the new schedule, including distance online learning (DOLP) was challenging, especially for younger grades who need more help with technology. “Setting routines are life savers and the daily emails from the principals have been very helpful and made the transition to DOLP go very smoothly,” mentions Ayako S. (JFK parent).

As expats, we also have to face extra challenges.

Being far away from home is the main one.

Shelley B. (JFK parent) shared, “Homeschooling is rather challenging and I’m not terribly happy with it and not because JFK isn’t doing a good job with it. They are doing a great job. In fact, much better than I anticipated but it is difficult to not get burned out when your child sits at the computer all day – day in and day out – and struggles to keep up with the workload. ” Working parents and teachers also had to learn to work from home and to sometimes overcome technical difficulties as well as distractions to stay focused. Now, the idea of having no social interactions in the foreseeable future has started to sink in and it is the hardest to accept. These findings from our small community could easily be applied to the world at-large.

As expats, we also have to face extra challenges. Being far away from home is the main one. Knowing that we cannot support our elderly parents who might be at risk is difficult and is a daily struggle. Kayla M. (high school faculty) confides, “The biggest challenge was that my sister had COVID at the end of March/ beginning of April. It was really hard to be so far away from her when she was sick. It was definitely the most scared I’ve been in a long time; I checked in with her about every two hours. I’m happy to say that now she’s doing much better and has recovered.” Thankfully, Zoom, Facetime, WhatsApp, and other apps allow us to have face-toface conversations and sometimes even meals. It is a great moral booster. For me, having a cup of tea with my mother, across oceans and continents, has become an essential part of my daily routine. As Bob C. (high school faculty) describes, “All of the beautifully, wonderful, quirky, and essentially Callahan family dynamics are still there in the four small boxes on our screens.” In fact, some expats started using online interfaces to workout or socialize with friends. Jessica W. (SWAS coordinator) explains, “The positive was that most of my friends in the United States had already been quarantining for several weeks. They were really eager to talk, set-up virtual game nights, workouts over Google Meet, and more. I’ve started doing these online workout classes with a random group of women, most of whom live in Boston, which has been awesome.”

Another challenge that expats have faced involve immigration processes. Some families had appointments for renewals or for visas scheduled and with everything on hold, no further planning has been possible. Jessica W. mentions,”The biggest [challenge] has been my and my husband’s visas. My husband is Mexican and I am American. He is applying for a visa to live in the United States and his appointment was scheduled for June. It was canceled and we have no idea when it will be rescheduled. I am applying for my Mexican naturalization, but need paperwork from Mexico City and haven’t been able to go get it.

It’s upsetting to have something as significant as visas and citizenship up in the air. On the other hand, I take consolation in knowing that there’s nothing we could have done differently.”

“Due to the Covid pandemic expats had to contemplate different factors in deciding whether to stay in Mexico for quarantine or return to their home countries.”

For some leaving wasn’t even an option as Elizabeth G (JFK parent) explains, “The thought of going back to the US never even crossed our minds. None of us have once regretted staying here.” Other families considered leaving but opted against it because the situation back home was worse than in Mexico or because they had no home to go to. In addition, nobody wanted to put family members at risk. Another group decided against leaving because of the weather.

Jessica W. says, “The weather in Chicago has also been really horrible, so I would be cooped up in my parents’ house.” On the other hand, Emily M. (JFK parent) shares that they chose to go back to the US for health purposes, “We left Mexico to be in the US because my children both have asthma and I felt more confident being in a location where I am more familiar with our medical professionals due to our history with them. We feel confident knowing we are in the best location for us should any health issues arise.”

In certain cases, 2020 is the last year living as expats in Mexico. Having to leave without saying proper goodbyes is bittersweet. “I’ve known for some time that this would be my last year at JFK, but COVID certainly changed some plans. I’m leaving Mexico early to ensure I can get a flight out. While I don’t regret my decision to leave early, it does break my heart that I can’t say goodbye to students and coworkers in person,” share Kayla M. One of the most dependable source of emotional support in these times of hardship is a good support network to rely on. When you are away from your family, you can always count on your friends. Some expats are social distancing together, which brings a much needed touch of human contact as stated by Kayla M., “I’m grateful to have coworkers as neighbors who have been social distancing as well!” For me, I was profoundly touched when a friend dropped on my door steps goodies and presents to celebrate Eid El Fitr (a Muslim religious holiday). It was thoughtful and the proof that kindness in trying times is the best remedy. How about you, what brings you comfort?

When you are away from your family, you can always count on your friends.

Throughout my survey, I was very impressed by how resilient and patient our Kennedy community is proving to be. Making limonada out of the 2020 lemons.

Some have picked up healthier habits, like Jacob S. (high school faculty) who shares “A daily fresh fruit smoothie! Berries are in season, and I finally have time to put it all together in the morning!

I’m reading more, I’m cooking more, I’m gardening more, so rather than trying to pick up some new hobby, I am honing the ones I already had in order to focus my time on them.” Others, like Erika H. (JFK parent) are reconnecting and explains, “I discovered that my husband and I lacked quality time together. He works everyday but less hours so he arrives for lunch daily, which rarely occurred before. We have had long conversations and in essence have caught up with each other. We have laughed and hung out like we did before we had children. That part has been wonderful.”

And, finally, everyone is finding a silver lining in this ordeal:

I will conclude with Shelley’s words of wisdom: “Stay positive and stay in the moment. Look outside at the beautiful sunny skies. Listen to the birds chirping. Watch the squirrels run along the top of the wall. Enjoy the flowers blooming. Appreciate the things we have in life including our friends and family and think about how lucky we are.”

We are lucky indeed to be part of such an amazing community, achieving the extraordinary…while in quarantine!.

Todavía recuerdo el día que esta era una Doceavo es un ciclo escolar en el que Miss Cristi situación que no trascendental, es la (nuestra Miss de biología) nos iba a tocar nos envió por correo vivir pronto, era una conclusión de más de un mapa con los casos realidad lejana a la trece años de trabajo, actualizados del coronavirus nuestra. En menos de esfuerzo y dedicación. a nivel mundial; esto ocurrió un mes todo cambió, Es la oportunidad a finales de febrero. Recuerdo tuvimos nuestro último de convivir, reír haber visto los iconos de casos día de clases, estuvimos confirmados en China, Italia, con nuestros amigos y y despedirse de Japón y en muchos otros países compañeros, y realizamos amigos, maestros que se encuentran del otro lado la rutina de los últimos y compañeros, del mundo; al día siguiente la cuatro años sin saber qué jugar un último clase fue dedicada a resolver sería la última vez. partido y dudas acerca de la situación, que si la Miss pensaba que el virus iba Doceavo es un ciclo escolar sentarse en a llegar a México, que en el caso de trascendental, es la conclusión el árbol por que sí, ¿cuándo?, y que si en verdad de más de trece años de trabajo, última era tan peligroso como lo planteaban. esfuerzo y dedicación. compañeros, jugar un último partido y sentarse en el árbol por última vez. Es cerrar una de las etapas más importantes de la vida: la escuela. Para concluir esta fase, se acostumbra tener una serie de eventos significativos que prometen ser el final feliz a tantos años en el Kennedy. Muchos de estos eventos se han tenido que cancelar o posponer. A pesar de todo, la respuesta que se ha recibido por parte de maestros, compañeros, amigos y familia, ha sido extraordinaria. A las pocas semanas de haber empezado la cuarentena, un compañero organizó retos entre la generación (tomar un vaso de leche lo más rápido posible, hacer un postre, asustar a algún miembro de la familia, etcétera), todo esto con el afán de animarnos y mantenernos unidos. Varios maestros nos han mandado videos, cartas, fotos, y han organizado actividades, como el Anuario Digital, el Podcast, y las Memory boxes, para que tengamos un recuerdo agradable de lo que fue nuestra vida en el Kennedy. En lo que hubiera sido nuestro último día de clases, recibí cartas de mis hermanos, papás, abuelos y primas, y a los pocos días me organizaron una graduación por ZOOM (con video incluido). He tenido la oportunidad de hacer videollamadas con amigas con las que no hablaba hace un año, nos hemos reencontrado dadas las circunstancias. La situación también me ha permitido compartir series, música, libros, recetas, rutinas de ejercicio, cursos y películas. He jugado juegos de mesa de manera virtual, he bailado, y me he reído.

A pesar de la distancia, nunca me había sentido tan unida con mi generación. Ahora que todos tenemos las mismas limitaciones, buscamos formas de apoyarnos, encontrarnos, y divertirnos.

Es difícil no sentirme triste y ansiosa con la incertidumbre del futuro, pero esta pandemia me ha enseñado que hay situaciones que no puedo controlar, y que vivir el presente y disfrutar cada día es posible. Me duele no haber tenido la despedida que esperaba, pero estoy eternamente agradecida con esta nueva oportunidad. La oportunidad de convivir con mis amigos de una forma distinta, de estar con mi familia haciendo actividades para las que antes no teníamos tanto tiempo, y de ver al conejito que vive en mi jardín y me visita cada día.

Sé que no es fácil hacerlo, ya que ha venido a romper con rutinas y planes establecidos, pero agradezco la oportunidad que me ha dado esta cuarentena para crecer, conocer, y anhelar un futuro diferente.

That we have health, enough food, jobs, access to the world using Wi-Fi, and the connections with my friends, family, and colleagues are just a click away!

We are truly in strange times, but we have to be able to talk about our blessings, which are so numerous.

Real! I forgot to take home my plants, so I think they must be dead by now.

My porch, sitting next to potted cacti and soaking up the sun.

Can’t wait to eat....

Since the lockdown started, we have been doing full yoga classes 4 times a week (and before only once or twice.) I have also been charging my cellphone at night in another room, so that I am not tempted to use it in bed. It helps me read more!

Big Night. It’s not on Netflix, you have to order it.

Fully dressed! I can get in the mental zone I need to be principal, plus I feel sorry for my work clothes if they are ignored.

De pronto, y sin previo aviso, el mundo se detuvo. Las actividades, los planes, los viajes... todo se pausó de manera forzada.

Reflexiones de una Pianista en Cuarentena De pronto, y sin previo aviso, el mundo se detuvo. Las actividades, los planes, los viajes... todo se pausó de manera forzada. Esto nos llevó a preguntarnos «¿y ahora qué hacemos?», pregunta cuya respuesta más natural era apoyarnos en lo que nos rodea en el día a día: pantallas, pantallas y más pantallas. Y es verdad que en buena medida éstas han permitido al mundo adaptar sus actividades a una modalidad de cuarentena, pero hay algo que difícilmente nos ofrecerán: un camino hacia nuestro interior.

El arte y, más específicamente, la música –crearla, estudiarla, entenderla, tocarla, hablar su idioma–, nos libera y nos transporta a cualquier parte del mundo y a cualquier momento de la historia. Las horas y los días no son suficientes para devorarla en su totalidad, y hay diversos estudios que demuestran que tocar un instrumento es un ejercicio mental de tal nivel que logra desarrollar el cerebro físicamente como si éste fuera un atleta de alto

En un mundo donde nuestros dedos se ocupan únicamente de hacer swipe y scroll, la música nos devuelve algo que fácilmente perdemos de vista: la maravilla de conectar nuestros dedos, ojos, oídos y, en sentido amplio, el cuerpo, con la mente y, por supuesto, con el corazón.

Es una realidad: los músicos no conocemos el aburrimiento. La autodisciplina de practicar y practicar

(y volver a practicar) nuestro instrumento es lo que nos saca adelante en aquellos momentos en los que las frustraciones nos agobian. Aprendemos que la frustración, lejos de estar ahí para desmotivarnos, está para retarnos, para empujarnos a superarla con la práctica y hacer sonar lo que queremos.

Cuando finalmente un día logramos ejecutar una obra completa, y la escuchamos salir de nosotros, la satisfacción es incomparable. Es justo en ese momento cuando cosechamos los frutos del tiempo dedicado, un tiempo que ha corrido por los dedos como agua, y que parece nunca ser suficiente. Una vida no es suficiente para todo lo que se puede lograr a través de la música.

Puedo decir sin temor a equivocarme que, quien tenga en este periodo de cuarentena a la bella y demandante compañera que es la música, no sólo tendrá su compañía durante esta extraordinaria circunstancia, sino que irá consigo por el resto de su vida.

La música estará presente en los momentos más alegres y los más nostálgicos, y pedirá que se le haga caso aun cuando parezca que no hay tiempo para ello. A veces le hará caer en la desesperación, pero esto irá seguido de una cálida reconciliación.

Esa persona nunca estará sola.

En estos tiempos de #QuédateEnCasa he notado que mis alumnos de piano encuentran en la música un propósito que alimenta su alma y los nutre más que cualquier pantalla, por muy brillante y entretenida que ésta sea.

Con o sin pandemia, no me queda duda de que la música es un medio a través del cual podemos voltear hacia dentro y encontrar la respuesta que nos falta allá afuera.

VIVIR EN PRESENCIA: RESPIRA

Parece una paradoja y, realmente, al releer este título estuve tentada a cambiarlo. Suena pretencioso, casi inalcanzable. Así lo analizó mi propia mente y antes de “eliminarlo” decidí darle la oportunidad de florecer. Sí, es un título con potencial de florecimiento en cada uno de nosotros. Y es que ante una situación tan inesperada y desestabilizante

para el mundo entero, acceder a un estado de paz, trascendiendo la corriente de noticias, estadísticas, vaticinios y confusiones, pareciera imposible. Es en tiempos de crisis donde más necesitamos hacer acopio de herramientas que nos vinculen con algo tan esencial como la paz mental. Hoy quisiera compartirte algunas.

La vida se vive en este instante. No podemos vivir en los recuerdos, no podemos vivir en las adivinanzas de un futuro aún inexistente. Recuerda siempre que tu respiración es el vínculo directo con este instante. Cuando te encuentres estresado por no tener las oportunidades del pasado, pues todo ha cambiado con esta pandemia, o agobiado por lo que pasará en un futuro si las cosas siguen así, concéntrate unos minutos solamente en tu respiración.

Te darás cuenta de inmediato que no podemos respirar el oxígeno de ayer o de antier ni el de mañana... que solo podemos tomar una buena respiración en el ahora. Es el recordatorio constante de que la vida se vive a cada instante. Cuando le damos ese valor al momento de respirar, nuestro sistema nervioso responde favorablemente. Estamos dotados de una capacidad de adaptación y de respuesta increíble, así que utiliza tu respiración para salir del “modo estrés” y entrar al “modo bienestar”. Una manera fácil de hacerlo es inhalar en cuatro tiempos y exhalar en seis tiempos por un periodo de cinco minutos.

Busca una postura cómoda, sentado en una silla o en el piso, con la columna vertebral erguida, y observa cómo empieza a haber “congruencia” entre esa respiración consciente y profunda y tu estado de ánimo. Te sentirás mejor.

MEDITAR, UN ÁRBOL LLENO DE FRUTOS

¿De qué sirve hacer una rutina diaria de consumo de noticias, que nos llenan de angustia? Hay “trending topics” que nos invitan a activar las alarmas internas.

Esto quiere decir que la información también tiene incidencia en nuestra salud.

Si lo que vemos, leemos y escuchamos nos altera, se produce un efecto nocivo en el cuerpo, elevándose ciertos niveles de sustancias, como el cortisol, que nos arrastran tanto a estados de ánimo indeseables como a la inflamación de nuestro sistema en general. Si todo el tiempo recurrimos a las redes sociales para conocer las opiniones de grupos insatisfechos o agobiados por la situación actual, seremos parte de la vorágine de terror que invita a nuestro sistema a la angustia o a la ansiedad. ¿Qué hacer? Optemos por otro menú. Hacer cambios en las fuentes de información es mi decisión. No quiere decir que deje de leer o me mantenga al margen de las circunstancias, simplemente elijo informarme de contenidos estrictamente veraces, confirmados y que sumen a mis herramientas de bienestar. A esto podemos adicionar momentos para cultivar tiempo en familia, la lectura, escuchar música y, en general, momentos para sentirme bien.

CONSUMIR INFORMACIÓN VALIOSA Y NO CHATARRA

“Es que yo nunca he meditado”. “Yo no aguanto ni cinco minutos”. “No sé meditar”.

Estas frases son muy recurrentes cuando nos topamos por primera vez con esta opción: la meditación. Y, efectivamente, es algo desconocido para muchos, pero es un remanso de paz que vale la pena experimentar. Dejando de lado la mística de las tradiciones de las cuales se origina la meditación, es una necesidad humana. ¿Te has fijado en los bebés que estando en un momento de silencio y calma, de repente, entran en ese estado de contemplación, con una mirada al infinito y absortos en el presente? Ese es un momento de meditación.

El cerebro y en general nuestro cuerpo, piden esos espacios. ¿Por qué? Porque al meditar utilizamos ondas cerebrales de frecuencia más amplia que nos tranquilizan de inmediato.

Recuerda que meditar puede ser sumamente amigable. No es necesario sentarse en flor de loto, vestir de blanco, ni prender inciensos (si quieres hacerlo y se siente bien, hazlo, pero no es un requisito para el meditador). Busca un momento en el día en que te hagas el hábito de regalarte 20 minutos con la intención de aquietar tu mente. El momento de despertar siempre es una buena opción. Estar tranquilo y evitar las interrupciones de ruido, timbres o teléfono suma a esa posibilidad. Y recuerda que meditar es un ejercicio que se fortalece a lo largo del tiempo. Por eso se dice que es un árbol lleno de frutos que podremos recolectar cuando esté listo. Llegará el punto en que para ti sea tan necesario por lo que te aporta, que lo harás frecuentemente.

Me pidieron que escribiera mi experiencia con el COVID-19 y cómo lo hemos llevado.

Lo primero que podría decir es que:

Somos sumamente afortunados porque ya llevamos más de dos meses encerrados en una linda casa y no nos ha faltado un vaso con agua, un alimento que llevarnos a la boca y, por si fuera poco, tenemos un jardín al que podemos salir, poner una alberquita inflable y disfrutar de los días soleados y, por supuesto, también es un lugar para bailar bajo la lluvia.

Creo que para los pequeños ha sido un gozo, han entendido mejor que nosotros que afuera hay algo que puede dañarlos y han aprendido a ser felices con lo que tienen y en especial con poder pasar más tiempo con sus papás y jugar mucho más.

Para mí claro que ha sido menos sencillo, no solo por el estrés que ocasiona el encierro de hoy y la incertidumbre del mañana, sino porque se duplicaron nuestras labores diarias; ahora soy mamá, niñera, maestra, cocinera y limpio la casa. Sin embargo, hay muchas cosas buenas también, como el hecho de tener la oportunidad de estar con mi hijo más tiempo teniendo que reinventar el entretenimiento en casa; los besos y abrazos se triplicaron, las risas se escuchan por toda la casa durante más tiempo, además de que me llevó a retomar mi camino de meditación e

introspección, que es algo increíble y que al mismo tiempo me recuerda lo que realmente importa en la vida y lo poco que necesitas para vivir.

De las mejores cosas que todo esto me ha dejado ha sido el tener que bajar la velocidad de mi vida; ya no corro, me concentro en lo importante, recordé lo divertido que puede ser cada cosa si así lo decides, cocinar con mi hijo; llenarnos de harina y reírnos es alimento para el alma. Aprendí que si no lava bien los trastes no importa, que lo importante es la intención de ayudarme y el tiempo compartido, que igual de importante resulta ir a la escuela como aprender labores y cooperación en la casa, que si al jugar un juego de mesa cambiamos las reglas para que resulte más sencillo, a nadie le pasa nada. Nuestros juegos y actividades favoritos: mojarnos, head bands, hacer casitas en los sillones de la sala de tele, cocinar muchos postres, salir a andar en bici y, claro, como dice él, “acucurrarnos a ver la tele”.

Hacer una pausa en mi vida, de tiempo, gente, actividades, ha sido algo que me ha hecho sentirme bien, valorar muchas cosas que a veces se olvidan y entender que ser feliz depende de uno.

Cierro con una frase que me encontré, que me encanta y considero muy buena:

“Cuando la situación es buena, disfrútala.

Cuando la situación es mala, transfórmala Cuando la situación no puede ser transformada, transfórmate”.

Reflexión de un Líder en Cuarentena “Si quieres hacer reír a Dios, cuéntale tus planes”, porque la verdad es que siempre hablamos del futuro con la certeza de que nuestros planes se van a ejecutar como esperamos.

Vacaciones, proyectos, todo lo que podríamos hacer hoy y que dejamos para después, sin pensar que tal vez no sea posible.

A veces necesitamos una llamada de atención, una sacudida para recordar que no tenemos garantizado el día de mañana y mucho menos cuando hablamos a más largo plazo, y esta cuarentena del COVID-19 ha sido mucho más que esa llamada de atención. Si hace seis meses alguien nos hubiera dicho en el trabajo que íbamos a manejar toda la operación de la empresa desde nuestras casas, nos hubiéramos reído con muchas ganas, porque siempre fue indispensable que estuviéramos ahí, en las juntas, en las visitas a las fábricas, con los clientes y con nuestros colaboradores para asegurar que las cosas sucedieran, que todo marchara bien. Al día de hoy llevamos casi diez semanas manejando todo desde el famoso home office y nada se ha roto, nada se ha caído y nadie ha viajado. No significa que así vaya a ser el futuro, pero nos hace pensar sobre el regreso a la normalidad y si en realidad eran tan imprescindibles todos esos viajes, todas esas largas reuniones y todas esas juntas. ¿Será que estábamos usando nuestro tiempo y nuestra energía de la mejor manera?

Regresando al tema de los planes, han sido muchas las cosas que se han tenido que poner en pausa por culpa de la cuarentena. Piensen en las bodas, los viajes, las graduaciones, los reencuentros que tendrán que esperar y que probablemente sucedan bajo la famosa “nueva normalidad”.

No me puedo imaginar cómo será una boda con todos los invitados bailando Sopa de Caracol con sus cubre-bocas y manteniendo su sana distancia…

A veces necesitamos una llamada de atención, una sacudida para recordar que no tenemos garantizado el día de mañana y mucho menos cuando hablamos a más largo plazo, y esta cuarentena del COVID-19 ha sido mucho más que esa llamada de atención.

Desde el primer día le hemos echado muchas ganas a sacarle provecho al encierro haciendo ejercicio (¡tantas bicicletas que por fin salieron de sus cuarentenas de años!), retomando o emprendiendo algún hobby, reconectando con aquellos que son especiales para nosotros en las tertulias virtuales del Zoom o haciendo experimentos en la cocina.

Experiencias de esas que son únicas en la vida que se cancelaron o en el mejor de los casos se pospusieron sin saber hasta cuándo y sin saber si habrá manera de vivirlas como las habíamos imaginado. Eso sí, a todo esto le hemos puesto buena cara y para eso no nos faltan frases de ánimo: “lo que no te mata te hace más fuerte”, “saldremos fortalecidos de esta”, o “las cosas pasan por algo”. Desde el primer día

Pero ¿saben una cosa? La verdad es que no somos perfectos y tampoco somos

de piedra, y está bien hacer berrinche por las cosas que se nos frustraron, por la gente que extrañamos o por la soledad que nos tocó vivir en la cuarentena del coronavirus. Una sacudida como esta, una interrupción de la normalidad de este tamaño, exige lo mejor de nosotros y, sin duda, nos pone a prueba. Nadie está listo para ver cómo los planes que hicimos con tanto esmero y las cosas que imaginamos con tanta ilusión tienen que

esperar porque tenemos que estar encerrados hasta quién sabe cuándo, de manera que por supuesto que se vale llorar y patalear y sentirse frustrado, porque no se vale y porque no es justo.

Ahora, la verdad es que todo esto va a pasar y la gran pregunta que hay que hacernos es: ¿qué nos va a dejar la cuarentena? Cuando pase la paranoia, cuando el riesgo de contagio sea menor y empecemos a dejar esto atrás ¿con qué nos vamos a quedar?

Haber estado encerrado todos estos días y restringido en lo que podemos hacer me ha recordado las cosas que importan más. Por supuesto que es importante cuidarnos entre nosotros, estar cerca de las personas que queremos y hacerles saber lo mucho que significan para nosotros y también seguir adelante con nuestras vidas en lo profesional, lo académico y lo personal, pero incluso antes que todo esto la cuarentena nos ha dejado claro que para poder enfrentar lo duro de estar aislado y la carga psicológica que eso trae consigo debemos estar bien en lo individual, bien con nosotros mismos. El estado físico es lo primero, con una buena alimentación y ejercicio regular, así como suficientes horas de sueño que nos ayudan a sentirnos fuertes y en buena forma.

Nadie está listo para ver cómo los planes que hicimos con tanto esmero y las cosas que imaginamos con tanta ilusión tienen que esperar porque tenemos que estar encerrados hasta quién sabe cuándo, de manera que por supuesto que se vale llorar y patalear y sentirse frustrado, porque no se vale y porque no es justo.

Mantenernos en buena condición mental también es clave, y aunque no tiene nada de malo dedicarle tiempo al Netflix, a los memes y al Candy Crush, vale la pena encontrar tiempo para actividades que nos hagan sentir bien y que nos traigan la satisfacción de hacer algo retador y enriquecedor, y quizá lo más importante es estar bien emocionalmente, algo no siempre fácil en una situación como esta. Cada uno encuentra la estabilidad social o emocional en diferentes lugares: en las relaciones con nuestros seres queridos, que en muchos casos se han mudado al mundo digital, la práctica de algún hobby, en la religión, etcétera. Lo importante es reconocer que estas tres facetas de nuestro estado – físico, mental y emocional -, son igual de importantes, y que no podemos estar bien si una está descuidada o no funciona como quisiéramos. Casualmente la Organización Mundial de la Salud, esa que tan llevada y traída ha estado estos últimos meses, define la salud como el estado completo de bienestar físico, mental y social, y no solo como la ausencia de enfermedad. Así es que ojala que cuando termine la cuarentena y empecemos a emerger de nuestros encierros como los osos al final del invierno, lo hagamos conscientes de que las cosas pueden cambiar sin previo aviso, que por eso hay que disfrutar el hoy y el ahora intensamente, y que lo hagamos siempre con mucho bienestar, con mucha salud.

Fue así como surgió QROVID SOS, una iniciativa que busca conectar donadores con aquellos que necesitan ayuda y cuyo punto de reunión es una página en instagram (qrovid_sos).

La respuesta ante esta iniciativa ha sido sorprendente; algunos de los beneficios han sido: apoyo a más de 90 médicos con equipo de protección, más de 400 personas que viven en albergues o acuden a comedores han recibido alimento, y se han entregado más de 70 despensas a familias desempleadas.

Esta página funciona de dos maneras: por un lado, ofreciendo ayuda y, por el otro, compartiendo una necesidad. Cuando alguien ofrece algún tipo de ayuda, la colocamos con las personas que más lo necesitan, mientras que si alguna otra necesita de esa ayuda o tiene alguna necesidad, buscamos la forma de conectarla con el donador ideal.

También, profesionales de la salud mental se han sumado a la causa para brindar apoyo psicológico a más de 20 personas.

En QROVID SOS creemos que los pequeños actos tienen grandes consecuencias y que juntos podemos hacer una diferencia y apoyar a muchos queretanos.

What YOU can do to Eradicate Racism

On May 25th, black man George Floyd was murdered by a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, who allegedly placed a knee on Floyd’s neck. The video of this unjustifiable crime raised awareness of systemic racism and promptly, people around the world gained interest in the cosmopolitan issue; protests around the United States rose following the death of George Floyd.

During the protests against the discriminatory death of George Floyd, a young girl enthusiastically shouted, “Daddy changed the world!” while gazing at how many people were asking justice for her father’s death.

On May 25th, black man George Floyd was murdered by a white police officer, Derek Chauvin, who allegedly placed a knee on Floyd’s neck while the man cried, “I can’t breathe, I can’t breathe.”

death of George Floyd. Protestors held various posters with different messages but all with the same root: the hope of eradicating systemic injustice and holding the police, who seized Floyd’s last breath, accountable.

Some may wonder: “Do we need to protest like this?”

The answer to this question is, “Yes.” Systemic injustice (also known as structural racism) is when an array of social factors systematically favor the white people over other races, ensuring that certain people are protected while others are violated. Since the United States’ society relies on this system, the corollary will be unnecessary deaths such as the one of George Floyd.

In current circumstances where this controversial issue has all public attention, we need to take efficient actions to fight this system. Dr. Bernice King, daughter of Martin Luther King Jr., claimed that the United States needs to deconstruct the system of violence and reconstruct a system of no violence.

To Serve

Changing the system will be arduous, and we, as ordinary citizens, do not have the power to do so unless we protest and convince the American government that there are flaws in the systems causing favorable conditions to the white and unpromising outcomes to the black. Another solution proposed

by Dr. Goff is to disinvest the police and fund for more convenient aftereffects; for instance, fund medical equipment for the doctors fighting the COVID-19. The United States spent 100 million dollars on policing; if the government had invested in other causes such as prosecuting the police who killed George Floyd, the government would have shown a sign of concern towards their racist system, and the society will not have been as angered as now.

What can the JFK community do to fight racism?

Firstly, education is essential. We should study the history behind racism and the changes in society to depreciate it.

Then, we need to spread awareness. Social media is a perfect platform to do so while keeping in mind that the main intention is to inform and teach and not only post what everyone else is sharing.

Furthermore, we need to sign petitions and donate.

Various organizations such as change.org and winningjustice.org have this topic at heart and have implemented multiple solutions regarding racism and George Floyd’s unnecessary death.

Racism should not be normalized. Injustice should not be normalized. We should fight racism and gain justice in the end.

I will conclude this article by quoting Dr. Philip Atiba Goff regarding the protests, “This isn’t just the response to one (...) public execution, (...) what we’re seeing is the bill come due for the unpaid deaths this country owes to its black residents.”

Preparation:

Ingredients: •

50 ml warm water

•

1.5 teaspoons active dry yeast*

•

450 g bread flour

•

2 teaspoons kosher salt

•

280 ml cool water (you may not need all the water)

•

Additional flour, for dusting

1. Measure the warm water in a small bowl and sprinkle the yeast on top. Set aside and allow the yeast to dissolve and become foamy.

2. Measure the bread flour into a large bowl and stir in the salt.

3. Make a well in the center of the flour mixture, and stir in the dissolved yeast.

4. Add the cool water, a little at a time, while stirring, just until a stiff, shaggy dough (watch the video below to see what this should look like) has formed (you may not need to use all the water).

5. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and allow it to rest for 30 minutes.

6. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured work surface, and gently press it into a rectangle and fold into thirds. Turn 90 degrees and repeat.

7. Place the dough in a large oiled bowl, and cover with plastic wrap. Allow it to rise in a warm place until doubled in bulk (about 1 to 2 hours).

8. Divide the dough into 4 equal portions, and shape each one into a long loaf (about 15-inches long and 1 1/2-inches in diameter), with pointed ends.

9. Place the loaves on a floured towel, cover with oiled plastic wrap, and allow to rise until doubled in bulk (about 30 to 45 minutes).

10. Preheat the oven to 230 degrees C, and place a pan of water on the bottom rack.

11. Uncover the baguettes and transfer to lightly greased baking sheets.

12. Sprinkle with flour, and make 4 elongated slashes down each one with a lame, razor, or sharp knife.

13. Bake the breads until crusty and brown (in my oven this takes around 35 to 40 minutes). The baguettes should give a hollow sound when tapped.

Dalgona coffee Preparation: 1. Add the instant coffee, sugar and hot water to a medium mixing bowl. Using an electric hand-held mixer, whip the coffee mixture until it is light brown, fluffy and holds stiff peaks when the whisk is removed.

2. Heat the milk, if desired, and divide between two heatproof glasses. Spoon dollops of the frothed coffee mixture on top and smooth out with a spoon.

1 14 oz. can sweet condensed milk

1 tsp. Vanilla flavoring

1. Pour the cold whipping cream into a cold bowl.

2. Mix the whipping cream with beaters or the whisk extension of a mixer on high speed until light and fluffy) it should stick to the whisk attachment. Be careful not to over beat it, or it will turn into butter.

3. In a small bowl, add the vanilla to the sweet condensed milk.

It is the step where you can play with different flavorings: nuts, herbs, chocolate etc…

4. Very gently, fold the milk mixture progressively into the whipped cream. The mixture will be a little softer. Don’t worry.

5. Spread the mix into a rectangular glass dish using a spatula.

6. Freeze for at least 6 hours (uncovered) 7. Serve with your favorite toppings.

3. Fold the dry ingredients in the wet ones, then add the coconut and chocolate.

4. Pour the batter in a greased and floured Bundt pan or loaf pan.

5. Bake in a preheated oven at 160 C for at least one hour.

6. Make sure the inside is baked through before getting out of the oven.
