With a pedigree packed full of racing luminaries such as Deep Impact, Height of Fashion, Nashwan and Baaeed, this is a family that has long been nurtured by the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum and continues to produce stellar performers and indeed stallions on a regular basis. His three Group 2 wins over a mile and exceptional good looks perfectly complement his blue blood, and the initial response from breeders has been extremely positive. Lope Y Fernandez’s exceptional first foals arrived this year to wide acclaim possess all of the quality and physical attributes which made him such a success in the sales ring and on the racetrack. He has covered more mares in his second season than his first and will be well represented in all arenas in the years to come.
Stradivarius received superb support from breeders across the spectrum covering a total book of 120 mares. The charismatic multiple Group 1 winning son of Sea The Stars also finished the year with an induction into Racing’s Hall of Fame, yet another feather in his cap. Mr Nielsen’s extremely generous bonuses will be offered for his second crop also, and as he said before, he is looking forward to paying them all out! Time Test topped the Guineas Breeze Up Sale for the second consecutive year with subsequent Curragh Maiden winner Ocean Conquest. His biggest crops are still to come, and the future looks bright for him in both hemispheres.
Rajasinghe maintains his superb strike rate of winners to runners from limited support, and really offers exceptional value at only £3,000. He remains the only son of Choisir in the UK and access to the important Danehill line which is demonstrated in the physicality of his progeny. As the world evolves around us so too must our education provision. Following consultation and feedback from both students and employers the historical Diploma Course has been reformed as the Level 3 Stud Management and Sales Consignment Course. The key change is bringing forward the start date to mid-September to better align with the academic year. This enables us to recruit students we would have previously lost to other more timely career opportunities. The first cohort have just completed their round of placements at the October sales which has proved extremely successful. We are always looking at new ideas and initiatives to support the pipeline of new recruits into our industry so if there is anything you would like to discuss please do get in touch. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our clients for their continued support this year. We see our role as caretakers of the National Stud for future generations and you are a key part of ensuring that future.

LOPE Y FERNANDEZ Bay, 16.0hh | 2017 Lope De Vega ex Black Dahlia (Dansili)
Physique - Pedigree - Performance Lope Y Fernandez was judged to be the European champion three-year-old sprinter thanks to finishing a close second to Pinatubo in the Prix Jean Prat and third behind Space Blues in the Prix Maurice de Gheest. But he also displayed tremendous versatility that year, running third in both the Irish 2,000 Guineas and Breeders’ Cup Mile. He was also a precocious horse who won the Round Tower Stakes and achieved podium finishes in the Chesham Stakes and Vintage Stakes at two, and he trained on at four to win the Heritage Stakes by five and a half lengths and to run second to Palace Pier in the Queen Anne Stakes. Lope Y Fernandez is by the internationally renowned sire Lope De Vega, whose son Phoenix Of Spain has made a promising start with his debut two-year-olds, and his Listed-placed dam Black Dahlia – by the highly influential Dansili – was a classy and tough individual who also produced Vintage Stakes winner Dark Vision at stud. His first crop of foals received rave reviews from breeders. They include half-sisters to Group 1 winners Awelmarduk, Crackerjack King and Jakkalberry and to Group 1-placed filly Baileys Jubilee, as well as half-brothers to this season’s Rockingham Stakes scorer Purosangue, smart miler Dubai Poet and popular handicapper Ropey Guest. Lope Y Fernandez offers a great chance for commercial breeders in Britain and beyond to access the Lope De Vega sire-line at an affordable fee.

MUTASAABEQ Brown, 16.0hh | 2018 Invincible Spirit ex Ghanaati (Giant’s Causeway)
Bred in the Blue Mutasaabeq represents the best of breeding and, importantly for his new role at the National Stud, both his sire and his maternal family have a rich heritage of producing successful stallions. His father Invincible Spirit has delivered around 150 black-type winners in his long career, and some of his sons have proved to be potent at stud themselves – not least I Am Invincible, a multiple champion sire in Australia, and Kingman, who has quickly established himself as a major force in Europe. This year’s Group 1-winning sprinters Regional and Shaquille are by other sons of Invincible Spirit who have stood in Britain. Invincible Spirit’s half-brother Kodiac is also one of Europe’s leading sires, supplying among others the elite sprinters Campanelle, Fairyland, Hello Youmzain and Tiggy Wiggy. Mutasaabeq was bred by Shadwell out of the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum’s outstanding 1,000 Guineas and Coronation Stakes heroine Ghanaati, by Giant’s Causeway – the breed-shaping sire of Shamardal and, notably, the damsire of Kentucky stallion sensation Gun Runner. Ghanaati is a half-sister to Champion Stakes runner-up Mawatheeq and Oaks third Rumoush and to the dam of this season’s Tattersalls Stakes winner and Dewhurst runner-up Alyanaabi. She is out of the dual Listed winner Sarayir, a daughter of Mr Prospector and Sheikh Hamdan’s wonderful blue hen mare Height Of Fashion. Fillies’ Mile and Princess of Wales’s Stakes winner Height Of Fashion is best remembered for her topclass sons Nashwan, Unfuwain and Nayef, all of whom sired multiple winners at the highest level. She is also the ancestress of Baaeed, officially rated the best horse to have raced in Europe since Frankel and now an exciting young sire, and his dual Group 1-winning full-brother Hukum. Furthermore, Height Of Fashion was a three-parts sister to Burghclere, whose Group 1-winning daughter Wind In Her Hair became the dam of Japan’s exceptionally gifted champion and epochdefining sire Deep Impact. There are few better stallion-making families in the stud book. There is also compelling evidence of quality in Mutasaabeq’s more recent pedigree, as every one of Ghanaati’s other six progeny to have raced also won, including the highly rated Afaak and Wafy.

RAJASINGHE Bay, 15.3hh | 2015 Choisir ex Bunditten (Soviet Star)
Exceptional Value Rajasinghe was one of the best two-year-old sprinters of his generation, taking the scalps of subsequent multiple Group 1 winners Romanised and US Navy Flag when scorching to victory in the Coventry Stakes at Royal Ascot in record time. He also has a precocious pedigree, being by Royal Ascot sensation and successful sire of sires Choisir out of National Stakes third Bunditten, making him a half-brother to another speedy juvenile in Kurland. He was therefore expected to get his fair share of winners when his first two-yearolds hit the track in 2022, but no one could have predicted that he would manage an exceptional 80% strike-rate, with the useful Waiting All Night and Spioradalta among the tally. His small second crop has yielded more winners, including the smart Cross The Tracks and Two Tribes, as well as a number of placed horses who are surely winners in waiting. Rajasinghe’s bright start led to a steep upturn in custom from breeders in 2023, with six black-type performers among the 42 mares he covered. He represents excellent value for breeders looking to use a sire who delivers an extraordinarily high ratio of fast, early runners.

His trademark was outstanding acceleration, and on several occasions he finished his races in a faster time than other Group winners over shorter distances on the same card. For example, when he won the Goodwood Cup in 2020 he ran the final four furlongs in a quicker time than Space Blues when he won the Lennox Stakes over seven furlongs. Stradivarius was a straightforward soul with a determined will to win and never raced on medication or missed an engagement through injury or ill health – a remarkable feat considering he ran so often, and on all sorts of going at such a wide range of tracks. The beautifully bred son of Sea The Stars, who has wowed visitors to the National Stud with his stunning physique, swaggering walk and magnetic personality, covered 120 mares in his first season, a high proportion of whom were stakes performers in their own careers. Highlights of the book included Gretchen, the Group 2-winning dam of high-class colts Gregory and Lionel, Janey Muddles, the winning dam of Grade 1 runner-up Awesometank, and multiple top-level winner Ventura.

TIME TEST Bay, 16.0hh | 2012 Dubawi ex Passage Of Time (Dansili)
Proven Black Type Producer Time Test was top-class on the track, as a dual Group 2 winner who was multiple Group 1-placed, and he is brilliantly well bred, being by leading sire of sires Dubawi out of Criterium de Saint-Cloud heroine Passage Of Time, a Dansili half-sister to Falmouth Stakes winner Timepiece from the family of champion Twice Over. So it was no surprise that he made such a fine start to his stallion career, recording a phenomenal 9% strike-rate of black-type winners to runners in his first crop of two-yearolds. His best performers in Europe are Pattern winners Crypto Force, Rocchigiani and Romantic Time, as well as Group 1-placed Sunset Shiraz. Time Test has also got off to a good start from limited numbers so far in New Zealand, having already been represented by Listed-winning two-year-old Leedox and at least five other stakes performers. The handsome bay has consequently been in strong demand from breeders in recent seasons, and has covered 530 mares in the past four years. He therefore has numerous well bred runners in the pipeline. The 127 foals he has on the ground were the result of his 2022 book of mares containing a superb 19% stakes winners. The blueblooded crop contains a half-sister to Ascot Gold Cup hero Courage Mon Ami and a half-brother to Cocked Hat Stakes winners Michelangelo and Private Secretary, as well as a colt out of multiple US Grade 1 winner Ventura.

A UNIQUE INSIGHT 42
TOURS
The National Stud is the only Thoroughbred stud farm in the UK to open its doors to the general public, giving a unique insight into the world of Thoroughbred breeding. Our tour guides have exceptional thoroughbred knowledge which they convey in an enthusiastic, educational and entertaining way. No matter what time of year you choose to visit, there will always be friendly foals, mares, yearlings and stallions to meet. Our Living Legends are firm favourites with all our visitors, with Grade 1 Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Lord Windermere and 3-time Group 1 winner The Tin Man both enjoying their retirements at The National Stud.
My wife and I joined the National Stud Tour on 16th June 2023 which was excellent. Our Guide was extremely knowledgeable and informative. It was a pleasure to see STRADIVARIUS settled in his new home. The tour lasted 90 minutes and was thoroughly enjoyable. We took the tour last year and it was so fascinating that we repeated it this year a little earlier. Highly recommended. A4173Sprichardl- 2023
We really enjoyed our tour of the National Stud. Our guide provided lots of information with plenty of humour. Good value for money. Even in a quiet time on the stud there were plenty of horses to see and at the end of the tour we got to feed two retired racehorses polos. Just a lovely experience. Dazmeister22 - 2023

H E R I TA G E
A RICH HISTORY
44
Colonel William Hall Walker approached the British Government with a proposal designed to rectify the country’s dangerous shortage of Thoroughbred stallions, which was limiting the breeding of calvary remounts. The proposal was for the government to purchase Hall Walker’s 1,100 acre estate in Tully, Ireland and if agreed then he would gift the British Nation the entirety of his bloodstock. The governments eventual acceptance of the proposal founded The National Stud and Captain Henry Greer was appointed as the stud’s first manager; under his leadership the stud produced high class and hugely successful staying stock.
Under the newly appointed manager Peter Burrell, The National Stud had an outstanding year with their homebred’s and were responsible for breeding four out of five of the 1942 classic winners. The phenomenal filly Sun Chariot won the Fillies’ Triple Crown and Big Game took the 2,000 Guineas.

Prince of Wales’ Stakes winner and three-time champion sire, Blandford, was foaled. The National Stud bred and raised Blandford, and he was the landmark of their early breeding success. One of the most influential stallions in the 20th century, Blandford sired 11 classic winners and remains one of only four stallions to have sired four Derby winners to date.
Ownership of Tully (Ireland) land was transferred to the Irish Government and the National Stud relocated to Sandley Stud in Dorset, with a second stud based in West Grinstead, Sussex.
H E R I TA G E
HM The Queen officially opened our current site on 17th April. Peter Burrell is the longest standing director of the stud to date and is responsible for the layout of the farm today.
In April 2008, The National Stud was acquired by the Jockey Club, which is governed by Royal Charter and its commercial operations act solely for the good of British Horseracing.

Newmarket became the new home of the National Stud after the Levy Board took over and leased 500 acres from the Jockey Club.
Owner-breeder Paul Mellon retired Mill Reef for stallion duties at The National Stud. Mill Reef won the Derby in 1971 and sired 2 Derby winners during his illustrious career at stud in Shirley Heights and Reference Point. Public tours of The National Stud commenced in the mid 1970’s.
The Queen was appointed as the first ever patron of The National Stud. Her first official visit was in May 2019, where she planted a tree to mark the re-opening of the newly refurbished stallion unit.
