Shortly after she and Jim Heeger joined Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos in the early 1990s, Daryl quickly heeded the call to service. Both Daryl and Jim found inspiration to serve their community and to give philanthropically from their family traditions. Jim grew up in Sioux City, Iowa and his parents were involved in nearly all the local Jewish organizations. While Daryl hails from the East Coast and a much larger community, the family values were similar.

Jim recalls the event soon after they were married where his father-inlaw publicly pledged three times Jim’s own yearly salary in support of local Jewish organizations. “It opened up whole new vistas of what I could aspire to. He has been a tremendous role model to me.”

In addition to her involvement with JFCS, Daryl has been fundamental in re-imagining Camp Newman, a Jewish youth camp set in the tall pines of Sonoma County. Now, through their Messinger / Heeger Legacy Fund for

camp scholarships at JFCS, the couple will carry on the example young Daryl saw her father set. “Certainly the things we’ve done at Camp Newman had been informed by the changes he made to the camps on the East Coast.”

The fund will extend scholarships to many kids who are already a part of the JFCS family. Whether they have participated in a JFCS YouthFirst internship, JFCS Holocaust Center fellowship, or sought therapy through JFCS’ child development programs, young people who have financial need can further explore their heritage and their future in their community.

As Jim readies to take on the chairmanship of Camp Newman, he explains the profound impact of the fund they set up through JFCS. “Our number one priority is investing in the future of Jewish people, so we feel strongly that every Jewish child should have an opportunity to attend Jewish camp. That’s the way we can ensure our gift will pay back into the future.”

A True Family of Friends Eugene and Elinor Friend set an incredible example of philanthropy for their children. Through their involvement with various organizations in the community, they showed their deep connection to their home and their heritage.

Their story spans more than a century.

As an Eastern European Jewish immigrant in New York City around the end of the19th century, Gene’s father was drawn to the western frontier, a place without barriers or discrimination.

Elly moved to California from El Paso, Texas and met Gene while attending UC Berkeley. They married in 1940 and started a family. Though the two shared a passion for San Francisco and for service, they held an even stronger dedication to their family.

Through the generations the Friends have remained very close-knit, with both Elly and Gene’s sons and almost all of their

grandchildren living in the Bay Area. “We love to be with one another and we have our Jewish traditions, like Shabbat, to bring us together,” says their son Donny, who along with his wife, Janie, host many Shabbat dinners at their home.

“We’ve always had a tradition of giving, because it was in our blood. Part of being Jewish is to care for others and to give tzedakah,” adds their older son Bob about his multi-generational San Francisco family.

The sons were looking for a way to honor their parents’ efforts to set an example for them and for their children.

Establishing the Friend Family Children’s Fund with JFCS was a natural transition from Gene and Elly’s work and focus on family. The fund will help children who have special needs and learning differences get the treatment they need to manage and overcome their challenges at JFCS’ Parents Place.

PARENTS PLACE: CONNECTING WITH YOUR CHILD AND OTHER PARENTS.

There are many ways to participate in JFCS’ Family Matters Endowment Campaign: BOB AND DONNY FRIEND (FRONT ROW) WITH DONNY’S SONS, JASON AND BENJI (BACK ROW).

With more than 30 years of experience, Parents Place has been helping people in our community with their most important job: raising children.

Endowment funds are an important way to sustain the great work Parents Place is doing and to help it flourish along with our children. Early intervention can make a huge difference in helping children with special needs to reach their full potential, and the expert staff at Parents Place have the knowledge and training that keeps them on the cutting edge of treatment.

Now Bob and his wife, Michelle, and Donny and Janie are passing on their traditions to their children. Donny’s son Benji participated in a JFCS YouthFirst internship at the JFCS Holocaust Center during high school. His brother Jason recalls seeing firsthand how involved his now deceased grandparents were and he wants to honor their legacy.

“JFCS is a great way to help people in our community. We’re making sure to set an example in a meaningful way,” explains Donny. As president of the board at Congregation Emanu-El he knows that the Talmud teaches us that, “He who teaches his children teaches his children’s children – and so on to the end of generations” (Babylonian Talmud, Kiddushin 30a).

A Talmudic story tells of a traveler who once saw an old man planting a carob tree. He asked him when he thought the tree would bear fruit. “After seventy years” was the reply.

“Dost thou expect to live seventy years and eat the fruit of thy labor?”

“I did not find the world desolate when I entered it,” said the old man, “and as my ancestors planted for me before I was born, so do I plant for those who will come after me.”

The Carob Tree Match Is Back Through December 31, 2015, you qualify for a $3,600 matching gift by committing $10,000 – paid either upfront or over a four-year period – to a new or existing named fund.

Those who are already members of our Carob Tree Society can receive another match by making another commitment, as many donors have already chosen to do.
