A TIME OF MIRACLES It’s the month of Kislev and if you’re in the northern hemisphere, you’ve entered the darkest time of the calendar year. Though it is no coincidence that in Jewish time we celebrate the brightest holiday on our calendar. Our ancestors knew all those years ago just how important it was to recognize the symbiotic relationship between the shadow and the light - that they cannot exist without one another. So it is in this time of Hanukkah that we pay particular attention to our celestial friends that guide us through the season.

These are the same stars that witnessed the Maccabees resist the Syrian army when King Antiochus sought to abolish Judaism in the land. And the same moon that guided the Jewish resistance movement through the hills of Judea to protect their home. The first miracle was that the Maccabees were victorious against their oppressors, and it was the second miracle that even after the Temple in Jerusalem was desecrated, there was just enough oil to maintain the eternal light, the Ner Tamid, on the Menorah.

During our festival of lights we gather with loved ones to sing songs, tell stories, indulge in oily treats and name the miracles in our lives. Whether that be the miracle of the sun shining, a baby being born, a promotion won, or a new recipe mastered, it is all a miracle, no matter how big or small. With it’s recognition, the miracle increases, just like the lights on the Hanukiah that grows brighter and brighter each night.

ANATOMY OF A HANUKIAH Menorah or Hanukiah? On Hanukkah we light hanukkiot (plural of hanukiah) which is a nine-branched candelabra. The eight lights signify the miracle of the eight nights that the oil lasted in the Temple menorah which has seven branches (for the seven days of creation). The ninth candle, the Shamash helps all the other candles shine bright.

Why? So that we may recognize the miracles in our lives that have the ability to illuminate any darkness. For this activity below, reflect on this past year and identify eight miracles - big or small - that sparked inspiration, connection or joy in your life.
