Jews Struggle with Issue of Cloning

WASHINGTON (JTA)--In the Brave New World of cloning, most Jewish ethicists and organizations are staking out the middle ground.

A general consensus appears to be emerging in the Jewish community that therapeutic cloning using cloning technology for medical research—is acceptable, but reproductive cloning—using the technology to copy someone—is not.

Reproductive cloning is unproven, risky and represents a "tragic misunderstanding" of human identity, according to Laurie Zoloth, director of the Jewish Studies Program at San Francisco State University and an associate professor of social ethics and Jewish philosophy.

Advances in therapeutic cloning, which could lead to transfers of compatible tissue in transplants, would not necessarily lead to the dangerous practice of reproductive cloning, Zoloth said.

"Not all slopes are slippery," she said.

Zoloth is serving as the principal investigator of a new grant to facilitate meetings over the next three years among Jewish scholars, ethicists and scientists to discuss the implications of advances in genetics.

Reproductive cloning raises ethical, theological and moral concerns, as well fundamental questions such as "Who is considered the clone's father and mother?" and "What happens to cloning experiments that fail?"

Some take the view that cloning can be a commandment, for example, if it is used to help infertile couples. Others consider it immoral to make a genetic copy of someone.

Clones would be born from eggs stimulated to divide after their DNA was removed and replaced with DNA from other cells. Cells from an infertile father, for example, could be injected into an egg, which then would be implanted in the mother's uterus to create a pregnancy.

The resulting child would have the same physical characteristics as the father, and infertile parents would not have to rely on sperm donors.

Yet many people have visceral, negative reactions to cloning, fearing that the practice lacks a basic humanity. Some believe that cloning would fly in the face of lessons derived from the Holocaust, when Nazi doctors experimented on humans in an effort to create a "master race."

Some rabbis are particularly troubled by the notion of a human made in one's own image, rather than the image of God. Britain's chief rabbi recently called planned experiments to clone humans "a new low in playing roulette with human life."

Rabbi Jonathan Sacks said human cloning is dangerous and irresponsible because of the threat it poses "to the integrity of children so born."

Britain adopted guidelines years ago that allow for therapeutic cloning.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted last month to ban all human cloning, both reproductive and therapeutic. Some Jewish groups, however, worry that a complete ban could end up being more harmful than, a carefully structured one.

Important advances in medical research might be lost because of a legislative ban, said Mark Pelavin, associate director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. "We don't want to paint with too broad a brush," he said.

In a journal published last year by Yeshiva University, a number of ethicists and thinkers weighed in on cloning.

Reactions in the journal, part of the university's "Torah U'Madda Project," which explores the interaction of Torah and secular studies and the challenges posed to the community, ran the gamut.

"Cloning does not involve the union of two individuals; it is therefore not an act of creation but rather one of duplication, and as such is completely at odds with any Jewish understanding of conception," wrote Dr. Eitan Fiorino, a pharmaceutical industry analyst.

But Rabbi Michael Broyde, a law professor at Emory University in Atlanta, believes that cloning

Broyde bolsters his argument with the scenario of a sick person who could be cloned to insure a match in a bone marrow transplant, "Jewish tradition might regard this procedure as involving two good deeds: having a child and saving a life," he wrote.

I was not disappointed! Having more than 500 classes to attend is overwhelming. A good analogy is if everyone of your "favorite" desserts were put in front of you, but you could only choose a few. After much discussion, first, second and third choices were made.

With a plan of attack and much plotting, especially with the directions (I admit to being "direction illiterate"), I set out to "infuse and inject" as much knowledge and ideas as I could. Armed with one very valuable piece of information: "The mountains are always facing the west in the front range," I somehow found my way through the spread-out campus of Colorado State University.

My backpack held a tape recorder, a black paper notebook and colorful gel pen (which became my daily bible) and in my mind, knowledge of where the really good coffee shop was located. I was put to the test, summoning up all my old "New York" reserve, running from class to class absorbing every bit of information possible.

In between classes, I could be found at the art center. Twice, I was mistaken for the instructor when I found myself explaining the project!

Aside from the workshops, the nightly entertainment was fabulous. A collective talented group ignited our energies on opening night and set the tone for the rest of the week.

I'm back now, and still carry the 2001 memories of a great CAJE and will pass on what I've learned to our own Pennie Z. Davis Child Development Center.

The event, held at the Elks Lodge, raised $1500 for ACS and provided hours of entertainment for the 130 guests.

Available were six blackjack tables, a roulette table and a craps table. For those who chose not to play, a DJ played dance music.

"We had a lot of help from people all over the city," event co-chairman John Zoob said.

Vasquez charged $5 at the door and accepted donations in exchange for chips. Donors entered a raffle to win $25 gift certificates donated by One Pacific Place. New Project Launched to Aid Israeli Soldiers

Tzedakah "guru" Danny Siegel recently came upon another mitzvah project of Barbara Bloom Silverman. He described her as "surely one of the greatest Mitzvah heroes out there."

According to the Jerusalem Post, Silverman has been sending packages of food and incidentals to IDF soldiers on duty throughout the country. She came up with the idea at the start of the latest intifada and has sent thousands of packages to date. She has a steady stream of volunteers who work with her packing and, with donations, buys all of the supplies she needs for the parcels.

In the winter months, she has included stocking caps and extra socks, along with the food items

and, during holidays, packages include special food items. The average package costs about $30 each.

"The soldiers have been incredibly moved by her actions," Siegel said, "and the IDF helps her by supplying trucks to move the parcels to the bases.

In addition to money, she has need for large quantities of toothbrushes, small toiletries, hand wipes, any kosher candy, gum, mints, snacks (all packaged in small bags).

Annual Campaign Packed with Programs

The Jewish Federation's Annual Campaign is kicking off with a wide variety of innovative programming for nearly every member of the Jewish community. The Women's Campaign, under the leadership of Patty Nogg and Joanie Jacobson, held their Cabinet Backoff this week.

9 The Pacesetter (men's major gifts) Division; chaired by Steve Nogg, will hold their "Kickoff Classic" for their volunteer workers on Sept. 5 at the, Champions Club, The "Kickoff Classic" for the 2002 Men's Campaign, chaired by Pete Brodkey, is Sept. 6 at Chili Greens.

• The Oldtimers Division (for men aged 65 and up) will enjoy a Deli Luncheon on Sept. 11. Art Grossman is the Oldtimers Division Chairman.

In addition to the seven House Party events sponsored by the Women's Campaign (described in the Aug. 17 issue of the Jewish Press), Omaha's Jewish community will have an abundance of creative and informative Jewish programs to choose from: • A Young Leadership Event (for those aged 25-45) featuring Olympic

Gold-medallist Leany Krayzeiburg, and the presentation of the 2001 Young Leadership Awards, is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 20 at the French Cafe from 8-7:30 p.m. Susie Noddle Levine serves as the event chair. • A departure from years past, the Women's Campaign event will be two performances of the higMy-acclaimed play Door to Door on Oct. 15 at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center Theater.

Written by Chicago playwright James Sherman, Door to Door is a memory-infused comedy that relates the unique and shared experiences of Sherman's grandmother, mother and sister. It examines the incidents that shaped their philosophies, as well as key transitional moments in history that gave these women more freedom.

• New York Times Foreign Affairs Columnist Thomas Friedman will address the Omaha Jewish community on Oct. 25, 8 paxK, at the Holiday Inn Central as the keynote speaker for the Community Campaign Event Combining the tenacity o£ a star reporter with, the knowledge of a historian, Friedman brings the drama of global political and economic affairs home to the American public.

In addition to Friedman's community address, the Jewish Federation of Omaha's 2001 Humanitarian of the Year Award will be presented to Robert I. Kully.
