The 50 Years'War; Israel and the Arabs debuts on public television The year 1998 marked the 50th anniversary of the foundation of the state of Israel. Although the conflict between Jews and Arabs can be traced back over 2,000 years, the current conflict and its cycles of war, terrorism, negotiation and hope can be dated back to the creation of Israel in 1948. The SO Years' War, drawing on hundreds of in-depth interviews with politicians, soldiers and journalists from 16 countries, is the first comprehensive, eye : witness account of the histpry of Israel's relations with its Arab neighbors. Beth Israel Synagogue will host Rabbi Benzion Twerski as its Scholar-in-Residence Jan. 29-30. Rabbi Benzion, as he is affectionately known, is the scion of an illustrious chassidic dynasty, the son of the internationally-renowned Rabbi Michel and Rebbetzin Feige Twerski of Milwaukee, WI. The Shabbos program includes Friday night Kabbalas Shabbos services, followed by a traditional Shabbos dinner. Rabbi Benzion's topic is "How to be in touch with your inner spiritual self." The Adult Education Committee of Beth El Synagogue will present, "Watch Out for Shabbat", on Saturday, Jan. 23, featuring author Joel Lurie Grishaver. ^ Now in its fourth year, the program's theme is "an all-day congregational sharing in the joys and renewal potential of the Shabbat experience," according to the committee chairman, Daniel Christensen. "Throw your watch out and just experience the time. We are especially excited to host special guest Joel Lurie Grishaver at the program this year," said Christensen. V-..;"'•; Grishaver, a family educator, illustrator, author, and founder of Torah Aura Productions', 4s in Omaha as part of the Davis Family Institute ;for Jewish Educators. . -•; " At "Watch Out for Shabbat," he will present a session, "Raising Your Kid to be a Mensch,"and a storytelling session for adults. He will also direct an interactive family game, "Family Bet Din," as the concluding activity. The day will begin with Shabbat morning services followed by an Israeli style lunch.
