Program offered on alcohol abuse By Gloria Kaslow Jewish Family Service president Alcohol abuse among the teen population is a serious concern in all segments of our society, including our own Jewish teens in Omaha. Now that summer vacation has started and teens have a greater degree of freedom, there are even more opportunities for drinking to occur. In an effort to recognize the potential drinking problems in our teen community and to learn the realities of the risks our teens face when they drink, a special program is being offered for both teens and parents. The event will be Tuesday, June 18, in the •auditorium at the Jewish Community Center at 7 p.m. Planned by BBYO and Jewish Family Service, the program is also endorsed by Temple Israel, Beth El Synagogue, Beth Israel Synagogue, Beyt Shalom Synagogue, B'nai Israel Synagogue, USY, NFTY, and NOSY. Facilitator for the program is Joe Ginsberg, a long-time Jewish teen youth advisor and a current co-ordinator and presenter for the Boy Scouts' and Omaha Bar Association's Juvenile Diversion Program. Speakers will include a member of the Sheriffs office who will fully explain the implications for parents and teens of Omaha's zero tolerance law, and Kim Lombardi, whose Burke High School son was killed in an alcohol-related automobile accident. Concerning the importance of this program, Mr. Ginsberg said, "The problems that once were confined to other parts of town have moved into West Omaha. We cannot afford to be naive. Recognizing that a problem exists is the necessary first step in solving the problem. Let's work together to take the necessary steps to save our kids." BBYO and Jewish Family Service are planning more extensive programming for both teens and parents in the fall. For teens, the programs will confront pressing teen issues such as alcohol and drug abuse and eating disorders. For parents, a noted community presenter will offer a course to teach skills that will help reduce family conflicts while empowering parents to establish and enforce desired values.
Thanks to Gene Brandt!
The purpose of the Young Leadership Outreach Program is to involve Jewish adults, 20 to 40 years old, with Federation and agency programs. Programming will include social functions, educational and religious topics and social action projecU. Mrs. Kirshenbaum was most recently the archivist for the Nebraska Jewish Historical Society. She ha* also served as a steering committee member for the Federation's Perspectives program for young leadership. "I am very excited to have this opportunity to get more people in this age group involved in the Federation's activities, said Mrs. Kirshenbaum. This will be a great way to increase awareness and strengthen our commitment to the Jewish community," she added.
