The Jewish Federation of Omaha and its agencies have selected 14 individuals to be honored as Volunteers of the Year at the Federation's annual meeting, June 12 at 7:30 p.m. in the Jewish Community Center. Named by the Federation is Marly Shukert for his role in the ongoing Strategic Planning Process. Truman Clare and Howard Kailow were nominated by the Foundation for their dedication, experience and legal acumen. Jewish Family Service named Joan Marthall

for her service on the agency's Family Life Education Committee. Nancy Rip* has been named by the Federation Library for her ongoing and outstanding service. Rabbi Kutner selected as spiritual leader of Beth Israel By Carol Katzman Donald Qerber, president of Beth Israel Synagogue, has announced that Rabbi Howard Kutner of Forest Hills, N.Y., has been hired as its new rabbi. Since 1986, Rabbi Kutner has served as assistant, rabbi of the Queens Jewish Center, an Orthodox congregation of 460 families, and principal of the synagogue's Talmud Torah. He obtained his Bmicha, rabbinic ordination, from Yeshiva University in 1983, after completing advanced Talmudic studies. He also holds a B.A from Y.U. in Sociology and attended Yeshivat Har Etzion in Israel. ' 'Beth Israel has a glorious past of great achievements," stated Rabbi Kutner, in a recent interview, *Now, the synagogue is about to enter a new phase in its history. *I hope to be able to continue the tradition of greatness while helping to revitalize Beth Israel into a dynamic s)aiagogue that will strive to meet the religious, educational, cultural and social needs of the congregation. UNO plans to award honor to Shirley Goldstein By Morris Maline The University of Nebraska at Omaha plans to confer an honorary degree on Shirley Goldstein during the Aug. 10 commencement program, the Jewish Press has learned. According to Del Weber, chancellor, the degree is the highest honor conferred by the University and is being bestowed because of Mrs. Goldstein's efforts in assisting the relocation of Russian Jews and bringing worldwide attention to the plight of Russian Jews. For many years, Mrs. Goldstein has worked as a volunteer spearheading the efforts of the Jewish Federation of Omaha's ongoing program to help resettle Jews from the former Soviet Union. She has spurred activity in bringing the plight of Jews to the attention of the entire country through her participation and leadership in the National Conference of Soviet Jewry.
