Abba Eban urges Jewish solidarity By Morris Maline Abba Eban, Israel's elder statesman, called upon the Omaha Jewish community to solidify its support for the peace process. "Israel is entitled to receive in peace the same solidarity it received in war," he told the more than 11(X) attending the Jewish Federation's Campaign windup program at the Red Lion Inn Feb. 9. What is important, he said, is what the breakdown of the peace process threatens, not what it promises. He asserted that a failure of the peace process would bring about a "Dante's Inferno, a living Hell," brought about by radical fundamentalist forces. Ambassador Eban said that he had initiated secret, exploratory talks with Jordan's King Hussein in 1968, but that it wasn't until a convergence of historical currents brought about aa im-

pact of change in the world. He said the Gulf War, which produced a massive coalition of 500,000 Americans and other troops along with the fall of the Communist Empire removed Israel's most implacable enemy and no longer blocked Israel's legitimacy. He lamented that if the West had acted in the 19308 the way it had in the 19908, there would be 45 million Jews alive today. Ambassador Eban pointed out that because every state acts in its national interest and because Egypt and Syria lost their Soviet Union "safety net," the Israeli flag now flies in Amman, Cairo, Gaza, Jericho, Morocco, Tunisia, and soon in Maylasia and Indonesia. The Arab world, he said, is coming to terms with the reality that the Israeli Defense Force is one of the 'Svonders of the world* and that Israel is the

mightiest small nation in the world. Even th6 Palestinians have finally come around, saying that 46 years of failures have exhausted their alternatives and that peace is the only option enabling them to join the international framework. Mr. Eban admitted there is no defense to suicide bombers as long as the Koran makes available to martyrs a "sensuous Utopia." However, he stressed that Arafat will have to make a stronger effort to track down and arrest Hamas leaders. As bad as the suicide bombers are, there would be far greater sacrifices without the peace process, he added. He pointed out also that the convergence of currents in history have produced a "covenant of cooperation' between the United States and Israel-for the first time linking foreign policies along the same path. Tut your faith in the peace process,' he said.
