I did something different the other day—well, maybe different is the wrong word. What I mean is, I did something {seldom do any more: I went to a friend's house during the day, just to visit. That is to visit and to see how ahe was recovering from illness. I warned ho-1 was coming, picked up some lunch for us and proceeded to reinstate the lost art of visiting. Of course we often go visiting—you'll notice I said "we." As acouple, and as a social thing, we do that. But in the middle of the day, for one woman to go see anI other, well it must be who-knows-how-long since I did such a thing. . We sat at her Idtchm table and schmoQied about this and that while we had our sack hmch. We talked woman talk, and about our kids and our comnmnity projects and how soon it would be Passover and would she be strong enough bv then and I don't remember what else. It was just good talk-plain, down to earth, middle of the day, with nobody dse listening. Maybe the real highUt^t wasn't the talk. Maybe it was when she produced a photo album of her daui^ter's recent wedding and demanded what TV people call "equal time." In other words, since she had looked at countless pictures of my kids and grandkids, she thought I ahoidd hav^.tbe honor of seeing hers. Suddenly seeing a full family pose taken eo the bimah, she said "That's the same bimah my husband and I were mairied on in that very synagogue 32 years aga" For oooein my Ufa I tfras nearly speechless. The impact of her words eraa^evsrything else. I was struck with the wonder of such ccntiiinitiy. In this day and age, iriien we're so quidk to toM out the oU and replace with the new, we dcn't often hear anyone aay such a thing, And, still another pleasure for my friend came when she pointed out some people in her dmigfater's wwlding party whose parents hJMi been in hers, three decades before. By David Kantor BONN (JTA)-Israel launched a campaign to improve its image in what was formerly East Ger many with the first of a series of "Israel Days." The opening event, attended by the Israeli ambassador to Germany, Benjamin Navon, was held in Magdeburg, a city which as recently as last summer was still dominated by a 'Communist Party hostile to Israel. Participants said it drew thousands to various discussion panels dealing with the Jewish state.
