SANDI RICHARDS DANIELS Word has been received of the death of former Omahan Sandi Richards Daniels, 43, of Pleasant Valley, NY. Services were held in Pleasant Valley on March 30.

Mrs. Daniels is survived by her husband, Charles; daughters, Bambi, Keely, Kimberly and Diane; son, Michael; one grandchild; all of Pleasant Valley; parents, Vicki and Monty Bergman of Pembroke Pines, Fla., and the late David "Sonny" Richards; brothers, Cory Richards, Washington, DC, and Scott Richards, Hull, Mass.

The family suggests memorials to United Cerebral Palsy.

SAM BORNSTEIN Services were held on March 16 in Denver, Colo., for Sam Bomstein, 94. Interment was also in Denver.

Mr. Bomstein was a resident of the Rose Blumkin Home.

Abraham Berger dies NEW YORK (JTA) Abraham Berger, who assisted a myriad of library users and scholars during a ^41-year career with the New York Public Library's Jewish Division, died at the age of 86. '. Berger, bom in Eastern Europe, joined the Ubrary's Jewish Division in 1926, and headed it from 1956 un-

til his retirement in 1967.

Berger wrote scholarly papers in the fields of Jewish mysticism and folklore.

He was a member of the Historians Circle of the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, the American Academy for Jewish Research, the Jewish Book Council, and a former president of the Jewish Librarians Association.

- By Morris M«Une Israel's peace prospects are better today than six years ago, Dr. Shai Feldman said here last week.

Dr. Feldmsn, a senior fellow at the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University, spoke to about 50 at an ADL luncheon in the Jewish Community Center.

In an interview, he said that while news reports focus on negative aspects of Israel's environment, putting the entire situation into perspective offers a more positive conclusion.

"Israel peace prospects are better today than six years ago and Israel is in a better overall situation than it was 15 years ago," Dr. Feldman asserted.

He explained that Israel has reached a new peak in its relationship with the Arabs, adding that the FLO has come around to recognize the State of Israel and the peace with Egypt, now in its 10th year, has survived the assassination of Sadat and the war in Lebanon.

Political Zionists whose goal was to gain acceptance of Arabs should now declare a victory, he said.

Accortiing to Dr. Feldman, six years ago Jordan was indecisive, the PLO had not gotten its act together, Egypt was busy regaining acceptance in the Arab world, the Soviet Union was preoccupied with other matters and the United States had nothing to work with.

"Now, everything is very dynamic, a situation that stems from the uprising," Dr. Feldman said.

Conservative rabbis announce changes

Surely there are better paying jobs with lees stress, fewer hours and less aggravation.

The friend usually continues with how difficult it must be to keep one's head in the midst of great turmoil caused by interaction of scores of Jewish groups and highlycharged individuals.

In less than 10 seconds, I rattle off my stock answer about how much I enjoy newspaper work and how fortunate 1 am to be working at something that I love doing.

And that usually ends the discussion.

We'll come back to this in a moment.

Earlier this week, Laurie Duitch met with me for an interview. She is the wife of Jonathan Duitch, who is the son of Jack and Jean Duitch and the grandson of Ethel Edgar.

Laurie and Jonathan reside in Jerusalem where he is in the graphics arts business and she is the head dietitian at Hadassah hospital on Mount Scopus.

She was graduated from the University of California and earned a master's degree at Boston University ending up with two degrees in nutrition.

So it wasn't surprising that after working at Hadassah hospital as a consultant that she was offered a job as a dietitian and then was promoted to head dietitian.

So we talked about her work at the hospital, how difficult it was to provide nutritious meab when budgets are cut and personnel are let go. She described the life of Israelis— too much smoking, too much stress, and the growing problem with drug abuse.

Certainly, she had enough of interest to warrant a story in the Jeirish Press so 1 suggested that we take a photograph of her, her husband, and Mrs. Edgar.

We toured the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home together seaching out Mrs. Edgar and our trip took several minutes because Mrs. Edgar had gone to the Jewish Community Center.

During our walk, Laurie told me how she recently looked at a scri^book of Mrs. Edgar's life and how impressed she was with her lifetime of activity in behalf of Zionism and Israel "You know, Jon and I are fuIGlling her Zionism dream..."

Later, just before I clicked the camera shutter to take the photo below, I repeated Laurie's words to Mrs. Edgar and believe me folks, teers swelled in my eyes as I saw Mrs. Edgar through the Ims holding onto ha grandson and his wife—a Zionist's dream being fulfilled. lliat, my friend, is the answer to your question. WASHINGTON (JTA)Conservative rabbis have announced they will build their own mikvahs, encourage more of their colleagues to specialize in Jewish divorce law and train more physicians to qualify as "mohelim" to fill needs that are overwhelmingly being served by Orthodox rabbis and institutions.

Restraurateur awarded $5.5 million FORT PLANTATION, Fla, (JTA) — A Miami court has ordered a Jewish businessman here to pay $5.5 million to a former local restaurateur whom he publicly accused of anti-Semitism.

The Third District Court of Appeal overruled a 1986 decision mandating no penalty, finding that Arthur Green had maliciously libeled Denis Rety, former owner of two eateries in Bay Harborlslands and Hollywood. The judgment includes $2.5 million for compensatory damages and $3 million for punitive damages, according to The Jewish Jooroal of Ft. Plantation.

The court called the case "an unprecedented case of libel" that "deserved an unprecedented award of damages."

According to Lauri Roth; an attorney for Rety, Green's attorneys have filed a post-appeW motion for reconsideration of the damages. The judge has yet to rule on the motion.

servative rabbis who know the minutiae of divorce law, Lewis said. He also pointed to the growing number of divorces and the spread of the Jewish population beyond areas where such specialists live and work.

The Rabbinical Assembly has just graduated seven new gitten specialists to prepare religious divorces, a program initiated two years ago by the assembly and the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, the movement's institution of higher learning and rabbinical wdination. There are now about 15 Conservative gitten specialists. .

The Beth Din, or religious court, being eetablished by the movement to rule on matters of divorce law will include nine members: three each from the Rabbinical Assembly, the Jewish Theological Seminary and the United Synagogue of America.

The problem of aging authorities and shifting Jewish populations also has produced a new demand for Conservative mohelim (ritual drctmicisors). The need, in part, stems from the refusal by some Orthodox mohelim to perform a brit milah on the son of someone not converted to Judaism by an Orthodox rabbi. • So, beginning in October, the seminary will start training a class of physicians in ritual circumcision, in order to qualify them as mohelim. As of now, the mohelim are all men, Lewis said.

Asked if a woman would be accepted aa a mohel, he referred the question to the Bible, where, he said, "you will discover that Moses' wife, Tziporah, officiated at the brit of her children."

By Hagh Orgel TEL AVrV (JTA) - Israel's national Habimah Theater and Moscow's famous Taganka Theater are to exchange stages at the end of this year, under an artistic agreement signed in Israel Habimah will perform three Hebrew-language plays on the Taganka Theater stage next January.

Two weeks later, the Taganka troupe will stage three Russian-language plays in the Habimah Theater in Tel Aviv.

It will be the first time Habimah has performed in Moscow since it left the Soviet Union 58 years ago ^td came to Paleatina.

Blacks and Jews yesterday and today

By Mitchell Warren The (oUowing talk was delivered at a recent Shabbat service at Temple Israel.

This pulpit holds very special memories for me; so many of my life experiences have occurred in this very spot— my consecration, my Bar Mitzvah, my confirmation, my first youth group regional conclave. 1 have come to learn that these events were not one-time experiences but rather integral parts of the process of my personal development as a critically thinking human being.

These experiences have something else in common; they all involve Rabbi Brooks. As much as to these experiences, I attribute my development to this wonderful person. Rabbi Brooks is my role model, and no matter what I do in my life, 1 will strive to impact on people's lives as Rabbi Brooks has on my own. ' So it is an honor for me to share this pulpit with Rabbi Brooks and to share this Shabbat with all of you. Under any circumstances, Omaha is my home, and Temple Israel my congregation.

As tonight we gather to celebrate Shabbat, I trust that many of us will turn our attention to another celebration during the week, that of the Academy Awards on Wednesday night to celebrate the glitz, the show and the spectacle of Hollywood.

But when you do watch, I would ask you to think of something beyond the movies. For during this awards ceremony, one movie in particular should be of special concern to us as Jews in America. The movie is "Mississippi Burning," the tremendous box office success about the Summer of 1964.

Along with the success, this film has gathered a great deal of controversy. While 1 am neither Siskel nor Eibert and we are not "at the movies," I would like to offer both my compliments and my criticisms.

Without doubt, this movie is special by Hollywood standards. "Mississippi Burning" clearly differs from standard movie fare that involves gratuitous sex, violence and drugs.

•, This movie deals with a serious part of American history, and it is vital that all people become acquainted with the Summer of 1964 and the civil rights movement, in general.

As a movie, "Mississippi Burning" will undoubtedly win awards, and Gene Hackman surely deserves to win an Oscar for Best Actor. But if the movie wins, it will win because it is a compelling story of two white FBI agents who seemingly impact on the dvil rights movement. It will never win any historical awards, because it does not present an accurate picture of the events—and that is unfortunate. ..Unfortunately, history is too often ignored and so poorly understood by many people that frequently important issues of the day are not placed in the proper historical context. "Mississippi Burning" is an example of a bad history lesson. In recent years the relationship between the Black and Jewish communities has suffered miserably from this ignorance and distortion of the past, and the alliance is on the brink of separation.

The true story ^ that summer can help us better understand the signifiance of that time and the necessity for a continued relationship.

During the Kennedy and Johnson administrations, monumental pieces of civil rights legislation were drafted and made into law. Not to be forgotten in this story ia the fact that this legislation was written in large part by Blacks and Jews, together.

But even the best legislative efforts did not have any immediate impact on the lives of Blacks in the South as well as in the North. To make any great change in the lives of the people, more direct action was required. Here, again.

Blacks and Jews again came togeihar in remarkable ways. ' Most dramatic of all was the Freedom Summer of 1M4.

who were denied what he had.

So Andrew, Mickey Schwemer—another Jewish man from New York who was 24—and James Chaney—a 21year-old Black Mississippian—were part of Freedom Summer. The three young men were driving to investigate the burning of a Black church when they were stopped by a local sheriff.

After several hours in jail, they were released, only to be stopped a short time later and lolled. The rest is, as they say, history: but a history that must not be forgotten.

This year we celebrate the 25th annivwsary of this historic summer and of this tragic event, and this anniversary can be tremendously instructive for us in renewing the Black-Jewish alliance.

Chaney, Goodman and Schwemer were murdered for participating in an interracial voter registration rampaign.

They were committed to the struggle for racial tolerance and social justice. It is 25 years later and we must ask ourselves where we are in this struggle, and what more we can do.

The battlegrounds have changed in the past 25 years and so must our agenda. The racism is not as obvious today; Blacks can vote, they can attend any college. People gave their lives for these rights. But today the racism and the inequality still exist, but in more dangerous and more subtle ways. The public prejudices may have disappeared, but the underlying problems remain.

In Washington, 1 teach a Confirmation class at otae of the synagogues. My students are sophisticated, intalUgeot teenagers, not unlike the students in the Confirmation class here. When I talked with them about Black-Jewish relations and told them about the work that remains, one of the students said that all people must be involved in bettering this world.

Why do we Jews have to be more involved; why do we have to lead the fight? Why a Black-Jewiah alliance and not a Black-Catholic alliance, or a Black-Irish alliance?

I had an odd feeling with this question; I was a proud teacher, so happy that she thought deeply about the iaaue, and, at the same time, I did not know how to nspood: "Why, indeed?"

As I finally told her, it is not because of our history of oppression; it is not because our people have suffered. As a community, we Jews are successful, affluent and politically powerful—and that is why we must lead the fight We have benefited tremendously in America and now we must take our successes and spread the wealth, so to speak.

And we have our work cut out for us!

Between the New York and Chicago mayoral campaigns, the presidential campaigns of Jesse Jackson, the ridiculous antics of Jewish fraternity members at several college campuses and the rise of Louis Farrakhan, the rifts between the Black and Jewish communities are replacing the once strong feelings of joint commitment and shared visions.

Friends involved with a struggle are now adversaries in a struggle with each other.

The initial reaction on all our parts is to Uame the other side and leave the playing field altogether. Quite simply, this is the wrong course of action. But alao wrong ia the desire to argue trith each other about the issues that divide us.

Members of both communities spend far too much time on the pointa of division so that we fail to see the necessary points of connection. Aa Phil IQutsnick pointed out "How can we poasibly seek unanimity between our two groups when neither group would expect unanimity within its own circle?"

alliance and the nation's underclass in general.

Louis Farrakhan has become an attractive lejader of the Black community—eq>ecially among young people—because he seeks to empower the community. If we Jews want to connect with the Black community, we must not only argue with Farrakhan and Jackson, but we must seek to empower the disenfranchised in this country.

How to embark on this daunting task? How do we Jews fight poverty and isolation and drugs and illiteracy and homeiessnees?

We accomplish theee taaks by acting as community leaders in areas of school reform, welfare reform, drug and sex education, fair bousing and affirmative action in employment We can use our political clout to influence the legislatinn that can create a foundation for positive change.

But we muat remember Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner. legislation does not change lives-pereonel involvement does!

We who have so much must go to those that have so little. We can supply for poor minority chiUren what we have come to expect (as children) and have come to provide (as par«its) in the Jewish community. We must insure that poor children—Black and White—get food, playgrounds, educational support through tutors and leadership opportunities in the community. . These young people must be given alternatives to alienation, drugs, teenage pregnancy and gangs. If we can minimize the gaps within our commimity, we can minimixe the hate and the ignorance that divide us.

Al Raby, a coaUtion leader in Chicago, wrote just before he died in November, "We have a choice. We can either create a society in which justice and fairness are realities in the life of every citizen, however poor, or we will continually be confronted by a politics of alienation and hatred of which Steve (kikely [and Louis Farrakhan] are products."

As Jews we can organize our efforts with ttie leadership of the Black community—the NAACP and the Urban League and the Omaha Housing Authority. Bob Armstrong who heads the HouaiBg Authority has been recognized as a national leader in the area of boosing and wdfare reform. , , It is Armstrong's desire to get people out of the projects and into the productive community. He is looking tor support in alleviating the povwty, the pain aiu the hopelessness. He is looking for cor^wrate sponsors to assist him in providing educatiuial, athletic ami cultural ateistaao^to young people.

This Temple and this Jewish community caii heip. Wf should work with Bob Armstrong, and togfther i^e ^ make a difference. A broad commitment to end pfintriy and breakdown barriers which divide groups would be the hot response to the broken Black-Jewish alliance. ., And there is something else. As I mraitioned before, this summer is the 25th anniversary of the deaths of Chaney, Goodman and Schwemer; do not let this anniversary pass unobserved. For me this anniversary hokls special significance because these men who gave their lives were around my age, and' I feel a special connection to them.

Plans are currently underway for a Reverse Freedom C}aravan June 21 to 24—from Mississippi to New York, with rallies and speakers and protests and reminders not to forget. Thousands of people will gather to commemorate the past and to strengthen .the preeent The ooslition ia lad by the family members of the thm men and is united and iaa|rired by this call to action: "Chaney, Goodman and Schwemer Their memory must andnre, their atniggle must continue."

"Hie snniversaiy ia two-fold: remember and set We can all be a part of thia annivaraeiy by lending our voices of support. We should learn the true history of the Summer of 1964, and then we must teach that history to our young people.

iukert to leave job with city arty Shukert, director of economic and policy developiaent for Omaha, plans to leave hia city job for private sector employment, April 10.

Mr. Shukert announced last Friday that he will join Wilscam, Birge & Associates, a local architectural firm.

He also will begin a hew firm called Martin Shukert and Associates offering services to cities, developers and other clients. The new firm, specializing in planning, will be associated with Wilscam, Birge & Associates.

Award recipient Travis Lewis, nine, was recently selected to participate in the Elkhom District Youth Authors Conference as the result of his story entitled, "The Lost Penguin."

Travis participate by reading and discussing his work with other young authors in the Elkhom District. Each year, the Nebraska Council of Teachers of English and the Nebraska Department of Education sponsor a Young Authors Conference.

Travis is the son of Lisa and Dennis Lewis, and is a third grader at Skyline Elementary School.

That was confirmed by Simcha Dinitz, chairman of the World Zionist Organization-Jewish Agency Executive. He said the move was part of an ongoing "effort to battle against neshira," and not a revolutionary change in policy.

Neshira is the Hebrew word for "dropout." Youth Club at the various retirement centers, to the Megillah reading for the horaebound and bedridden, Chabad was there to add three special final touches this Purim.

As in the past years goody packages accompanied by informative material on the Purim holiday were mailed to the entire conrununity. The contents of the packages were provided in part by the Leon Shrago of Bag N Save, Richard Jure of No Frills and Marty RdfleJBtien of Keystone Community volunteers assembled the Mishloach Manot and prepared them for mailing.

On March 19, members of the T.H. Youth Club performed a Purim Shpiel for the residents of the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home, Remington Heights apartments and the Montclair Nursing Home.

Legion of Honor PARIS (JTA)-The Jew^ish woman who created a ^afe house for Jewish children at Izieu, France, has received the prestigious "Legion of Honor" decoration from President Francois Mitterrand.

Sabina Zlatin, a Polish Jew who found refuge in France right hefon World War II, is the only survivor of Izieu, whose 44 children were eventually sent to Auschwitz by Lyon Gestapo officer Klaus Barbie.

Zlatin, now 82, created \be home at Izieu whete she hid Jewish children when the Nazis occupied Prance.

Do you believe this April first business? 1 don't mean any nonsense about April Fool's Day, I mean the fact that March has come and gone, which also means it's more than time to think about Passover.

This year we had a little reprieve because it's so late but it's coming. Just you wait and see. And with the news that it's on the way come thoughts about preparing for that week. That is, preparing special foods, specifically fish.

Gefilte fish, of course.

I have to confess that I usually only go to the trouble of making it about twice a year—in the f^ holiday season and now, during the spring holiday. By "going to the trouble," I don't mean re-cooking that which has already been conomercially done, a very acceptable process in many homes. No, I mean buy the fresh fish (traipse out to southeast Kiahenev for it) get it into my own kitchen and make the fish.

In the past, we've talked and kvelled about how easy it is today, compared to chopping with a hock messer and a wooden bowL Oh yes, we have all the modern equipment which, theoretically, makes the project less difficult than the cooks of past generations had it.

So what's the problem? Well, I guess it's that old bugaboo—time. The first question isn't "will we make fish?," but "when will we make fish?"

What I never have enough of is time. For what? Well, even though the fish comes nicely bagged in neat portions of fillets, it still has to be cut into manageable pieces and fed into one grinder or another, usually tmce (for perfect texture). And since it only makes sense, the onions ought to go through the pulverizing process too.

Fine. But leave time for the patchking with that part, and the running to a window when the eyes are watering.

You see, these are all components to "making the fish!"

So nu, what do I want from you? Funny you should askbut since it's come up, let me tell you what I would consider a huge help in the fish making department.

In the last few years I 've learned that most sizable cities with undoubtedly sizable Jewish populations, have a convenience offered that we also should have, but don't.

The fish stores in these places offer the same varieties to their customers, the same availability before Yomtov, but they offer one little extra we don't have. They offer to grind the fish for the consumer—yes, I said grind.

What a boon that would be for me, to open t^ 10 or 123 pounds of fish abready ground and waiting for me to add the other stuff! I know that on both the east and the west coasts, ground fish is available. Recently it was called to my attention that as close as St. Louis they have the same convenience. Now come on guys, what are we anyway, orphans? Why can't we have what they have?

It doesn't seem too much to ask and while I can't speak for anyone else, I know I'd be glad to pay a little extra' to have my fish prepared up to that point.

Well, that's my public service announcement for today.

Most Jews think it is difficult or impossible to trace their roots because: 1} their name was changed at Ellis Island (or before); 2) they are unsure of the exact location of the "shtetl" of their grandparents; or 3) aU the recorcb of the town were destroyed in the Holocaust.

This myth has been refuted through genealogical research.

That it is. And for all who are beginning their shopping for Passover foods, you know that dl of the supermarkets are already displaying Passover items. Some stores have greater quantities and varieties than others but you will be able to find the basics and a number of new items in almost all of your favorite shopping spots.

"Kosher for Passover" meats and poultry are available at the Nebraska Kosher Meat market, in a separate large freezer section at Bag 'n Save and in some of thi freezer sections at other stores. And for any questions you might have about the kashering of your own home or about foods that are acceptable for Passover, please check with your rabbi.

The first glances I have had at some of the displays do not include some of the new Empire Kosher food items but they may still be coming in. They include some new types of parve ready-to-serve fish, an all-natural fruit hne with items such as apricot, red raspberry and strawberry preserves, co.^diments such as duck sauce and a variety of parve sweet items.

Incidentally, both Bagel Bin and Nebraska KosW Meat will be closed during Passover, so be sure to do your purchasing in advance.

Hopefully, no one will have to be alone for Passover this year. In addition to the Seders that will be held at Beth Israel on both nights and Beth El and Temple Israel on the second night, there will also be Seders at the Rose Blumkio Home that will be open to members of the community who want to join family there or who have no family to be with for the holid«y.

The true joy of Passover is having family and friends to share the holiday meals, so consider inviting someone you know who might otherwise be alone. Or if you are alone, please check out one of the above opportunities. You'll be glad you did!

Just in case you are still buying staples to use now or for after Passover, you might be iaterested in some new rice products that have appeared recently in town. I saw them at Cub's but they are probably in other supermarkets too.

Two kosher parve items are put out by Reese; one is Creole Rice, New Orleans Style, and the other is Rice Jambalaya with mushrooms, onions and spices. Also, there is a new Artichoke Rice and Pecan Rice product that is tasty, kosher and parve. What an opportunity for variety and new tastes for your Shabbat and company nteals. They are mixed in with some products that ate not kosher so be sure to check for the 0-U. If you want a delicious new base for a vegetable parve soup, try the Near East Lentil Pilaf Mix or the Spanish Rice Mix. Let your imagination run wild and you'll have an elegant soup (of course, adding many of the vegetables from your refrigwator and even from your freezer).

Peativitlee surrounding the centennial of the construction of the Omaha Building at 17th and Farnam Streets will include the display of the FlanaganMonsky exhibit which has been available for viewing at the Boys Town " Hall of History."

Native daughter sends musical gift home

Joan Micldin left Omaha Central High School with the class of '62, earned her degree at Sarah Lawrence College, married Raphael D. Silver and raised three daughters.

In addition, she has pursued a <:reative life as a writer and director for stage and screen, with the 1988 film, "Crossing Delancey," one of her more celebrated milestones along the way.

Last night's opening of "A ... My Name is Alice" at 'Theatre at the J' brings something special of Joan Micklin Silver's back to her native Omaha. The original musical revue will continue on the Jewish Community Center stage through April 9.

When "A ... My Name is Alice" opened off-Broadway in 1984, the critics applied such comments as "delightful," "sophisticated," "hilarious," "witty," "warm and spontaneous." With public response equally enthusiastic, the production quickly became a huge commercial success.

"Alice" emerged from a collaboration by its directors, Ms. Silver and Julianne Boyd (whose credits incude conception and direction of"Eubie!" on Broadway.) They said their goal was to bring together fresh, new material dealing with women, the way they themselves felt as women.

They wanted, they have explained, to depict women who'd come a long way, who

had a real s^snse of humor, who could be entertaining and who could laugh at themselves.

Ms. Silver and Ms. Boyd approached more than 100 writfl-s for clever, humorous or touching sketches that said something about women in different stages of their lives.

Ms. Silver has said, "We wanted the material to reflect where we and our friends and our daughters feel we are today. We seem to be more relaxed, more confident, less defensive than in the past."

An eclectic group of writers is represented in the revue. One outstanding piece, by comedienne Anne Meara, depicts a woman who shocks a construction worker into sudden retreat by responding in kind to his sexual advances.

Singer-composer Lucy Simon and writer Steve Tesich offer a song about a teenage girl who loves "the boys who like to dance real slow " "Emily, the MBA," which spoofs the old hit, "Leader of the Pack," portrays a female yuppie who promises to be more humane than her male counter parts until financial success signals her corruption.

The number entitled "Welcome to Kindergarten, Mrs. Johnson," emerged from a session in which Ms. Silver and Ms. Boyd shared with a couple of young writers some anecdotes about interactions with their own children's teachers.

In this sketch, an accomplished career mom is humiliated by her child's teacher, who admonishes the mother for raising a happy, independent daughter.

Other vignettes address women as friends, as sisters, as members of sports teams.

Ms. Silver has said that she and Ms. Boyd hoped to show conflicts that address a wide range of women's experiences, including, but not limited to, relationships between women and men.

The commercial success of "Alice" heartened Joan Micklin Silver, who, following 11 years of teaching music and writing plays while raising her three children in Cleveland, Ohio, moved with her husband and daugfatos to New York City in 1967.

Once there, her hopes to fulfill a lifelong ambition of writing and eventually directing films met with many frustrations and only B few positive experiences.

In 1975, her husband, by then a prominent real estate developer, secured financing and produced an independent film which his wife wrote and directed. That effort was the intemationaUyacclaimed "Hester Street," which Ms. Silver adapted from Abraham Cahan's novella, "Yekl," the poignant story of Jewish immigrants in New York City during the early years of this century.

"The film deals with issues that are confusing and disillusioning to Israelis, similar to the conflicts which faced America in the late '60's. It is advertised as 'The Other Voices of Israel.' for in this film, a few young rebels attempt to raise their voices and be heard.''

Renen Schorr will personally introduce the film and answer questions following the screening. A reception will be held following the film.

Tickets are $4 for adults, $3 for students and seniors and are available in advance from Lois Wine or beginning at 6:30 p.m. on April 3.
