Anne Katzman named recipient of Israel Bond Meir tribute Anne Katzman has been selected as the larsel Bond Golds Meir Tribute recipient and will receive the Golds Meir Brooch. Justice Minister first Jew in Spanish Cabinet

By David Kantor MADRID (JTA) - The first Jew to serve in the Spanish government since the Jews were expelled from Spain nearly 500 years ago will take the oath of office here this week.

Beth El women host joint sisterhood tour program Beth El Women's League will host a bus tour of historical Jewish Omaha sites on Sept. 6. The joint sisterhood event will feature a narration by Nebraska Jewish Historical Society members.

Airconditioned buses wiU depart from tke Jewish Community Center at 9:30 a.m.; at 9:15 a.m. from Beth laraisl. and at 9:30 ajn. from Beth El, returning at approximately 11 am. Participants will remain on the buses for the entire tour and will be served a mini-brunch.

Photographer exhibitor has Omaha Jewish ties

Twenty-eight-year-old Michael Elliot Newman, whose exhibit of artistic photographs at the Jewish Community Center opened Aug. 7 and runs through Sept. 8, has returned home.

"My family is from Omaha.

I grew up here and this is the family center," Mr. Newman said of his local ties.

They are deep and proud ties: Mr. Newman's father is Murray Newman and his grandfather is Jule Newman, making him part of one of the area's most important Jewish families.

The show is importaot for other reasons as well, Mr. Newman explained. "I just started exhibiting this year, and this is my second show.

I bad a one-man show in Topeka in April, but I'm pretty excited about this exhibit. It has more pieces than were in Topeka and there will be more traffic."

The artist's road back to Omaha baa been a long, winding one, both personally and artistically. He currently lives in Topeka, but has traveled and lived throughout the country. His formal education included work at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Kansas City Art Institute, as well a* stays at U.N.O. and Washburn University in T(^Mka. But Mr. Newman's artistic desires go back to his early childhood. "Creative expression is all I've ever been seriously interested in.

For me, creativity is some thing to get passionate •bout," he said. Mr. Newman explained that his mother, a fine arts major in college, gave him early and fraquMt aqxMure to many <|Jn«fW>t forma of aqirw-

sion as he grew up. Painting and drama drew his interest, as did photography.

"The theater is my main and first love, but economic considerations and other personal factors made drama impractical as a career," he explained. So Mr. Newman has recently returned to photography: "In March of 1987, I got back into photography as a fulltime endeavor. I built a dark room and r.eally committed to it."

He was first drawn to the' form when, as an eight-yearold living in Chicago, his next door neighbor, a Life Magazine photographer, showed him how to take pictuires. He gained experience of a non-artistic sort as a photographer for several small-town newspapers in Illinois during his high school years, when Mr. Newman lived on a farm. "I may get back into journalism as a means of having a steady income,"'he said.

Visitors to Mr. Newman's exhibit will find three kinds of subject matter in his photographs: "Old, interesting, vanishing Images, by nature sentimental; strange and amusing visual images which catch the imagination; and a large number of recent photographs more clearly artistic in nature."

Mr. Newman said this last category stresses form and compodUoo and the use of two-dimensional space.

"They have visual interest beyond the subject matter, so the mode of expression is unlimited, more open-ended.

It's not abstract art, but it is a discovery of abstract forms and shapes. It's about shapes and what Ihey do on the paper."

Benjamin Netanyahu, a career diplomat and former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, took the number one spot with 1,408 votes from the 2,000-plua member Central Committee.

Beqjamin Zeev Begin, son of former Premier Menachem Begin, w(Hi third place with 1,233 votee.

Begin was edged out for second place by Moohe Katsav, the minister of labor and social affairs, who received 1,324 votes. .

Netanyahu resigned in April as Israel's ambassador to the United Nations and announced he would seek election to the Knesset.

Begin, a scientist by profession, has never held political office.

The three front-runners were followed by Moshe Arens, David Levy and Ariel Sharon, in that order, all of them possible successors to Premier Yitzhak Shamir.

Jackson meets Arad

By David Friedman WASHINGTON (JTA)Israeli Ambassador Moshe Arad made it clear to the Rev. Jesse Jackson that neither he nor any other individual could be an intermediary in the Arab-Israel conflict.

Arad "politely" rejected such a nde for Jackson when, during a two-and-ahalf-hour meeting at the envoy's home, Jackson mentioned several times the dose contacts he had with Palestinians and some Arab leaden, an Israeli source told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency.

Negotiations must be cai^ ried out by the parties involved with the he^ of the U.S. government, Arsd told JackMn. At a news conference after the meeting, Jackson seemed to go along with this view saying that negotiations should "basically be govemment-to-govemment contacts." But he also noted

that 'whether government or non-government, we must improve the climate."

New daily paper In Israel

The Pollards Jonathan PoUard was arrested on espionage charges, Nov. 21, 1985. He pleaded guilty and on March 17, 1987, was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.

His wife, Anne, was sentenced to two concurrent fiveyear sentence, with no parole, for possession of secret documenf.s.

Pollard, a U.S. Navy counter-intelligence analyst, had obtained and transferred to Israel such information as Arab troop movements; data on Libyan air defenses enabling Israel to bomb the FLO headquarters in Tunis; information and performance analysis of Soviet deliveries of military equipment to Arab client states; status of nuclear weapons being developed by Pakistan with funding from Arab states; location of Syrian and Iraqi poison gas facilities and sources of that equipment in West Germany.

All of the above information is contained in the introduction to an article called The Agony of the Pollards, by Eraanuel A. Winston, in the July issue of Midstream magazine.

• , Mr. Winston is a member of the international board qf trustees, Jaffee Center of Strategic Studies, Tel Aviv University.

In the article, Mr. Winston states that Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz called the severity of Pollard's sentence "the greatest miscarriage of American justice" and added that Mr. Dershowitz has agreed to represent Pollard's appeal for sentence reduction.

I was prompted to read the article in Midstream after a visit from a reader who emphatically stated that in his opinion Pollard had been treated more harshly than the average American spy because he was Jewish and that his efforts were directed toward helping Israel.

1 told the visitor that I would read the article and as he requested consider writing an editorial on the subject. I forewarned him, however, saying that I was not predisposed to helping anyone who was a traitor to the United States.

Before I had an opportunity to read the article, a notice came into my office from Chicago from "Justice for the Pollards" Chicago committee.

The notice gave the times and places for community information forums being offered by the parents of the Pellards.

Interestingly, the notice included a list of more than 30 sponsoring organizations. The organizations were synagogues and Jewish educational institutions.

So I read the article.

One of the most devastating points for me was that Pollard had warned Israel of West German shipments of poison gas manufacturing equipment to Iraq and Syria.

We all know that Iraq effectively used such gases killing thousands in its war with Iran. We also are under no illusion about why Syria would want such chemical weapons.

HAIFA — In recent days, readers of English in Israel have a new daily newspaper — The Nation. Initial promotion for the for the paper made no mention of The Jerusalem Post. It said very simply, in effect: "If you are not satia•fied, you are invited to become a reader of The Nation."

Thousands of replies poured in, indicating that perhaps readers of English were indeed looking for a new kind of daily paper.

Hesh Kestin, published and editor, described for us, in a ?vide-ranging interview, what the new paper will be like.

For one thing, it will not engage in politics and will not take a political stand. To begin with, at least, there will be no editorials. The editor's personal views and opinions are his own business and he should not permit them to color his presentation of the news. Excerpts of editorials from Israel's leading papers, including the Post, will be published regularly. There will be an Op-Ed page in which readers and leading writers can express their opinions.

As for the rest, the function of a paper is fo present the news and to inform the readers without coloration. A staff of correspondents in Israel will cover the country; international news will be provided by the extensive press service of the Los Angeles Times and the Washington Post.

The Nation will report on current happening^, business, sports, entertainment and all the usual features of a modem western newspaper. It will be a family paper. It will not seek to sensationalize the news; it will not carry photos of nudes. There are some ads he will refuse to accept, said Kestin, if they are offensive.

The first issue reveals some of Kestin's innovations in domestic news coverage. For example, violent disturbances' in the streets will not be referred to as "demonstrations."

Kestin: " Demonstrators are people who carry placards voicing protest. Those who carry and throw rocks are rioters, whether they are Arabs or Jews."

"The area west of the Jordan River will be known in The Nation, as it was known throughout history, and officially by the government of Israel today, as Judea and Samaria, and not as the West Bank, a name given by Jordan.

The paper will have no bias on the political scene. "We see Peres like Shamir—no favorites." We were shown a set of cartoon depictions of the leading personalities in the country. Great care has been taken not to make some look like viUains—as happens so often in other papers here.

Too many of Israd's papers hammer away for causes, parties, special interests, and simultaneously denigrate their opponents. Kestin hopes The Natkm wiU serve to build bridges between various points of view rather than emphasize divisivenesB. The reading public of the new paper? He maintains that eight percent of the population, 340,000 souls, list English as their mother tongue. Besides, the paper will be an objective reflection of what is going on in Israel for the benefit of foreign journalists and the diplomatic staffs of the various countries stationed here, who today draw their news and views from less than objective sources.

Who is behind the paper? Where is the money coming form? The Nation was due to appear many months ago, but a major backer let it be known that he also wanted a major voice in determining the paper's policies, in a specific rightist direction. The deal fell through and a fresh start had to be made. The funds now available have been provided by a group of investors in the Los Angeles area, headed by David Wilstein and his friends, by a group of other investors from Israel and abroad and by Kestin himself.

Is there enough capital to assure continuity? Modem technology has cut type-setting cost to a minimum. Wordprocessors and laser composition do the work without big and expensive machinery. When will the new paper be in the black? Advertising is selling so well that The Nation is getting started on the right foot in the most encouraging way.

Who is Hesh Kestin? A New Yorker, he worked for The Herald-Tribune, Newsday and Forbes Magazine, among others. He emigrated to Israel 17 years ago and operated an orange grove. Though he returned to journalism, he still lives on the farm. For a while he was with the Tel Aviv bureau of The Jerusalem Post. He served in Lebanon as a soldier and also covered the war there as a correspondent.

A staff of competent editors is still in the process of being built up. Among them one finds the naine of Hillel HaUdn. The Nation does not see itself as being in competition with The Jerusalem Post, but the latter apparently feels otherwise. The Jerusalem paper has recently reorganized, brightaned up its appearance, and added more pages daily.

Intemal dissatisfaction has been reported. According to the kical paper, Kol Ha-Ir, Hirach Goodman, the Poet's military correspondent, resigned with a withering bUat at the Poet's policies. He is said to have written to the editors: "I cannot continue my association with a paper which has lost its sense of responsibility to its readers, prints news based on rumors and unverified suspicions, damages the good name of larael, and worst of all, does not have the courage or the aenae of justice to make dignified amenda."

The gift shop in tlie Rose Blumkin Home, which is operated by LOVE volunteers, has had a face lift.

Walls have been painted, curtains have been hung, showcases and shelves have been rearranged and new merchandise has been ordered.

The curtains were made possible through the generosity of JadcCohen of Msyfair Textiles and Joan (Mrs. Bud) Bernstein, who sewed them. A large matching "Shalom" tapestry hangs on the door.

The shop, which regularly .stocks candy, notions and toilet articles for the residents and co'amics made by the residents, is now displaying new items, including a shipment of new fall costume jewelry. A new

greeting card carousel will feature humorous Jewish cards. LOVE donations cards are also available.

The gift shop is open Monday through Friday, 1-4 p.m., and on Sunday.

Gift shop coKihairmen are Bemice Horwich and Phyllis Bittner. Proceeds from the gift shop are used to help pay for LOVE activities in the Home—among which are classes in ceramics and water-color painting conducted by hired teachers—and a class in aerobics.

Weekly manicures are offered to residents who want them. Tanks of tropical fish provide pleasant diversion in the lounges. Another popular activity conducted

While this film has initiated an intense debate among Christians about its propriety, it ia a theological debate which the ADL is not qualified to ent«r.

However, the film's protesters have sparked cootroversy by their tactka.

They have sought to intimidate MCA, the parent com' pany of Universal Studioe, into not releasing the film by suggesting that Chris tians, after seeing the film would turn against Jews.

The basis for thia sugges tion was that MCA's cor porate leadership included Jews. The protesters strategy of threatening aqti Semitic reaction itself con stitutes anti-Semitism.

Even more disturbing is the audible silence of so many others. By contrast, the National Conference of Catholic Bishops and the National Association of Evangelicals were able to repudiate the hate-filled protesters while still challenging the film.

The Anti-Defamation League calls upon our Christian friends, regardless of their opinion of the movie, to speak out forcefully against manifestationa of anti-Semitjsm and to provide guidance for those who look to them as their moral leaders.

Israeli consular team on mission to Moscow

By David Landau JERUSALEM (JTA) A six-man Israeli consular delegation bound for the Soviet Union received a warm sendoff from Premier Yitzhak Shamir and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres as they embarked on their mission Sunday.

The group of mid- and junior-level foreign service officers and administrative aides, headed by Russianbom diplomat Meron Gordon, was due in Moscow yesterday. They were to pick up their Soviet entry visaj in the Netherlands, the country that has represented Israeli interests in the USSR since Moscow broke diplomatic relations with Israel in 1967.

Shamir emphasized in his

farewell remarks to the group that they will be the first Israeli officials Soviet Jews have seen in Moscow in more than two decades.

Peres reviewed the understandings reached with the Soviets over the functions of the Israeli mission. They are to concern themselves with the condition of the IsraeU Embassy building in Moscow, which has not functioned for more than 21 years, and with other strictly non-political matters.

By Hugh Orgel TEL AVIV (JTA) There's gold in them thar Arava hillal Researchers from the Energy and Infrastructure Ministry's geological survey have recently discovered unusually large concentrations of gold in the aoutbem region of the Arava. The concentrations ware found during a survey and geochemical mapping of Israel, conducted with the support of the ministry's Earth Sciences Research Administration.

A report on the finding was presented to Enwgy and Infrastructure Minister Moabe Shahal. The report notes that the gold was discovered in soil washed away by water in an area covering several square miles.

The ministry underscored that it remains impossible at this time to determine whether the finding is economically significant.

Can you believe tbia—ttie time of year when a conversation often starts "it's only blank weeks until the holidays?"

No matter how cloaely I watch the calendar, it always sneaks up on me. Alright, so it's nearly here—nu, wtiat does that signal? If you're tniiale, you know it means check out the fraeaer, see If thMv'f room for the honey cakes and other ethnic goodies to be baked.

The nest step (for me) is sitting down and going throuj^ my recipe file. When I did thaftie other day, I discovered something very nice waa happening to my 40-plus years of recipe collacUoo. Many were beginning to take on a very personal identity.

For example, let's begin with the tradition^ honey cake.

For years I used one that was called "Sylvia's Honey Cake." Always a winner, dependable, familiar—you know what I mean.

In the last couple of years I've added a new card titled "Esther's Honey C^e," and if I search thoroughly, I can find one called "Toby's Mother's." And while I'm in the section of my file marked "Ethnic Foods," I find "Gert's llandel Bread," "Mother's Gifilte Fish" and of course attached to that one are exact instructions for "Chrain."

The cards behind the desserts and pastry section contain tbinga such as "Bobie's Cinnamon Rolls," "Shelley's Fruit Cobbler.'' "Judee'.s Warm Fruit Compote" and "Lisa's Ginger Snapa."

When I really pay attention to how many of my cards were personalised in this way, 1 found many I had all but forgotten. Such things as Myra's Cheeee Roll Marty's Guacamole, Marlene's Mexican Casserole. And the most recently added, which I openly admit give me great pleasure, are the ones from my daughters. Imagine, in this day and age when young women are so busy with working outside the home, with spending enough time with the babies, with finding a few minutes to do some shopping, some of them still like to go in the kitchen and turn out a little something to make somebody say, "This is the beat I've ever eaten." And furthermore, it's something good enough to write out on a recipe file card and send to MomI That could well be one of the definitions of the word "naches."

That's it—my recipe revelation. My on-going connection with certain women who have been a part of my life through the years. Not the only connection, of course, but still an important one. I like being able to call up a sweet memory of aomebody no longer around—particularly when it's as easy aa finding a recipe for "Bobie Lewis's Spinach Boracht" Maybe it boils dowp to thia: you don't have to be a brain surgeon or a nudear adentist to be remembered. Sometimes it's as simple as making the best kugel in the world and sharing the recipe.

NEW YORK - A state chairman of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights whose suitability for the office was challenged by the Anti-Defamation League for favorably reviewing an antiSemitic and raciat book has resigned his post, the Ijeague has announced.

The disclosure of the departure of Dt. Ralph Scott, chairman of the Iowa State Advisory Committee to the Civil Rights Commission, came in a letter to Jeffrey P. Sinensky, director of ADL's Civil Rights Division.

Mr. Sinensky had told the Commission in -early May that Dr. Scott was unsuited for the past because of his "insensitivity " to racial and religious minorities.

In his review of The Dispossei^sed Majority, a 684page book written under the pseudonym of Witmot Robertson, Dr. Scott called the volume "valuable" because it throws a "bright, clear light on facts which our politicians have kicked Iriio dark corners.

Andy Stevenson, Jewish Community Center theater director, has announced a competition to find a new name for the JCC theater.

"Somehow 'The Theater at the Jewish Community Center' just isn't snappy epougb," Mr. Stevenson commented. "A Hebrew name seems appropriate, but we're open te all suggestions. The winner will receive public praise, personal batisfaction and a prominent nwation in our first playbill."

All entries must be submitted to Mr, Stevenson no later then Sept. 30. The competition is open to the entire community, Including children. "We have some new and exciting plans for this year's theater program," explained Mr. Stevenson, "classes for everyone from kindo'garten to adulte, school break specials and a variety of productions.
