Campaign announces divisional leaders

ADL releases survey results NEW YORK (iTA)-The results made public recently of a nationwide survey of evangelical and fundamentalist Christian attitudes towards Jews challenge some commonly held assumptions, according to the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai B nth which commissioned the poll.

Conducted telephonically among a sampling of 1,000 religiously conservative Christians in September and October by the Houston-based Tarrance, Hill, Newport and Ryan research organization, the survey revealed that most of thero do not "consciously use their deeply-held Christian faith and conviction as justification for antiSemitic views of Jews."

The survey sampling was made up of 36 percent Baptists, 12 percent Methodists, 10 percent Lutherans, 7 percent members of the Church of Christ and the remainder included other ^Protestant evangelicals such as Pentecostal, Mormon and Assembly of God. Ninety percent disagreed with a statement that "Christians are justified ift holding negative attitudes towards Jews since the Jews lulled Christ," five percent agreed and five percent said they were "unsure."

Twenty-four percent felt that God views Jews "more favorably than other nonChristians" based on their belief that "Jews are God's chosen people" and the fact that Jesus was himself a Jew. Ten percent felt that God views Jews "less favorably than other non-Christians." .

Eighty-six percent disagreed with the assertion that "God does not hear the prayer of a Jew," a statement that, was originally made in 1981 by the then president of the Southern Baptist Convention, the Rev. Bailey Smith. Only 12 percent agreed with this statement.

Sixty-eight percent said Jews are viewed

by God "no differently than other nonChristians" because they have not accepted Jesus, 20 percent said they may be judged "more harshly" and 12 percent were "unsure."

ADL national director Nathan Perlmutter said the survey is part of the agency's ongoing analyses of Christian attitudes toward Jews and that many of the findings of this particular poll are significant in view

of the increased prominence in recent ye of religiously conservative Christians in this country—"a group about which Jews have expressed apprehension." He added: "While there are areas of important disagreement between the Jewish community and avangeUcals and fundamentalists, such as prayer in schools and the teaching of evolution, these reflect differing values. Their support of voluntary prayer in the school, for instance, is no more necessarily antiSemitic than our opposition to prayer is anti-religious. In a cxJturally pluralistic society, it is possible to be at opposite ends of an issue without religious bigotry being operative."

Perlmutter cited as "troubling" the survey's finding that although 57 percent of the sampling revealed no secular antiSemitic attitudes as measured by their responses to seven statements in an "antiSemitic index," 22 percent agreed with one of the anti-Semitic characterizations and another 21 percent with two or more. Only five percent of those surveyed accepted four or more of the statements as valid.

It was found that 49 percent of those between 18 and 34 years of age agreed with at least one of the anti-Semitic characterizations compared to 34 percent of those 55 and over.

The survey noted a statistically significant relationship between belief in a literal • reading of the Bible and expression of one or more secular anti-Semitic views.

The seven statements reflected stereotypical attitudes towards Jews, including the following: "because Jews are not bound by Christian ethics, they do things to get ahead that Christians generally do not do," 27 percent agreed; "Jews are tight with money," 51 percent agreed; "Jews want to remain different from other people, and yet they are touchy if people notice these differences."

39 percent agreed; "Jews are more loyal to Israel than to the U.S.," 27 percent agreed.

But, sizeable percentages of those who accepted these characterizations felt they were "positive" traits. For example, of those Who believe. "Jews are tight with money," .60 percent thought that was a positive trait. .

These "Talking Books" are distribnted free of charge to any person who cannot read comfortably with standard prescription glasses. About 500 new titles are added each year, according to Gerald M. Kass, JBI executive vice president.

Baltimore Institute accepting applications Applications are now being accepted for the September, 1987 term of the Baltimore Institute for Jewish Communal Service. The Institute offers a double degree program combining the resources of the Baltimore Hebrew College and the University of Maryland School of Social Work and Community Planning.

Since 1971, the Institute has provided an educational program to train profes-

sional leaders for work in Jewish commimal organizations, including federations, family agencies, Hillels, community centers, community relations coimcils, and national and overseas organizations.

'' They do so in a climate of open and vicious hostUity toward Israel, Zionism and Judaism, expressed in barely disguised anti-Semitism in the Soviet media. Seeking to learn Hebrew, Jewish history, Jewish culture, and to practice the Jewish religion, they are subjected to various forms of intimidation ranging from surveillance and KGB interrogation to trials and prison. As'some Prisoners of (Jonscience have been released, other Soviet Jewish activists have taken their place. These harsh realities of life for Soviet Jewry cannot be camouflaged by a more skilled, western oriented public relations style.

Nevertheless, in the twenty years since Dr. King spoke to the Soviet Jewry rallies, there have been significant developments in the struggle for Soviet Jews. Only a few weeks after Dr. King spoke Soviet Prime Minister Kosygin declared in a Paris press conference that those who chose to do so could join their families abroad. But even with this assertion of family reunion from Kosygin, which was aimed at western audiences as are the declarations of Gorbachev, no one dreamed at that time that over 270,000 Soviet Jews would soon live in freedom, most in Israel.

In contrast to 20 years ago, the issue of Soviet Je*ry, was a critical and, significantly, a formal agenda item in the bilateral negotiations that took place this past October in Reykjavik. That Soviet Jewry was part of the official agenda represented a reversal of Soviet insistence, dating back decades, that the issue of Soviet Jewry was an internal matter. It represented an affirmation of Dr. King's assertions to those community rallies in 1966 when he said, "The denial of human rights anywhere is a threat to the affirmation of human rights everywhere."

That the Soviet Union accepted this issue on the agenda, and the Soviets feel compelled to make gestures that attempt to project the appearance of Sovi^ responsiveness to the issue of human rights, underscores Dr. King's awareness that voices of conscience can overcome the voices of oppression when asserted loudly, vigorously, and ceaselessly. We need to be aware of that charge Upon us as we join with millions of other Americans in celebrating the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

A kibbutz made famous by its music

Mary Fellman—humanitarian

Mary Fellman once asked me how long it took to prepare an editorial. I replied, "It takes minutes to write, but requires a good deal of thinking time."

She asked the question some 10 years ago in the context of her responsibility as a member of the Board of Directors of the Jewish Press.

Throughout the years, her questions persisted, and my answers were not always to her liking. As a former editor of the Jewiuh Press, she spoke with more expertise than most.

Our relationship has grown during this past decade and even though she continues as my sharpest critic, she also has become my confidante.

Before she left on her recent trip to Israel and way before I knew that she was to be honored by the Jewish community of Omaha with the Humanitarian award, we talked.

I told her about my dream of the past 10 years-to write an editorial about those in the community who have influenced my work on this newspaper.

The trouble with my list, I told her, was that the name of Mary Fellman kept rising to the top and that I had great difficulty in ranking the names of the others.

Then, she was named Humanitarian of the Year and I decided to write this editorial without identifying as yet those others who have played a strong part in my editorship.

So, you see Mary, sometimes it can take as long as 10 years to prepare an editorial.

The balance of this message needs no words from me.

For those of you who were not present at the annual meeting, let me point out that Mary's son, Mark, made the presentation.

He spoke of her qualities: vision, dedication, leadership, and love. ... vision, to see the past, preserve and share it... to plan for the future and turn dreams into realities. .. .dedication, to see is not enough, one has to do. ... leadership, just as she was fortunate to have teachers and role models, she has become a teacher and role model for the new generation of leaders. ... love, love of family, friends and colleagues, love of Judaism, her community and country, and love of Israel.

Speaking for himself, for his brother Ron, and sister Marsha, Mark thanked the community for allowing him to present the award.

In her acceptance remarks, Mary told the community that she had been inspired and influenced by inany.

Jacob Fried, her grandfather, provided an early love of Judaism and demonstrated that a poor immigrant could still find ways to help those in greater need.

Max Arbitman, her father, instilled in her a pride in being Jewish and an American. His legacy was yiches, crucial ingredients of which are: learning, virtue, philanthropy, service to the community.

Dora Arbitirtan, her mother, showed her what it was to be a mensh, to open her home, to make room at the table for one more, and how to be involved in the Jewish community.

Morris Fellman, her late husband, was her greatest supporter and strength.

"I never walked alone," said Mary.

And as she completed her remarks, 1 looked at her and believed that those she loved dearest were right there on the stage with her. ^^

HAIFA-It is already an accepted fact of life in Israel that the kibbutzim, once regarded as the very symbol of Jewish agriculture, are now to a large extent engaged in industry. Their production ranges all the way from plastics, electronic equipment and furniture, to plywood, textiles, optics and shoes, to mention but a few of a long line of commodities.

The other day we visited Kvutzat Geva, located at the far eastern end of the Valley of Jezreel (the Emek), where popular music has been turned into an income-producing sector of the economy. Geva's folk-singing troupe, the Gevatron, has become one of Israel's top rated entertainment companies. The fees earned augment the kibbutz income from dtrus, cotton, chickens, dates and dairy herds, as well as its electronic and food industries.

It wasn't planned that way. When a group of Geva high school students began singing together close to 40 years ago they did so because they enjoyed it. They developed a unique musical style of their own, and when they received invitations to entertain at various kibbutz functions they were happy to oblige. From there it was only a matter of time. The amateur kibbutz singers began to receive requests for their appearance from all over the country. 'Television and concert appearances were followed by trips abroad, including a two-month coast-to-coast tour of the U.S. by bus, under B'nai B'rith auspices.

What is the secret of their success? At a time when popular music and pop bands emphasize loud noise and flashing lights, and songs which drip with sex and violence in content and presentation, the Gevatron stands out in contrast as an old-fashioned troupe, whose sweet, blending voices make the audiences want to sing along. Their rich harmony seems to flow spontaneously. They have an easy, relaxed stage presence, highly professional, but with the deceptive appearance of amateurs having a good time together.

Their program offers songs which reflect the positive, the warm, the decent, the creative, the happy side of Israel and its people. They convey a message which is sorely needed In these days of social, religious and political clashes. One might say they sing of the other Israel, the Israel which is quite different from that which emerges from newspaper reports.

Though they produce income for the kibbutz, each of the 18 members of the troupe is expected to carry his ftJl weight of normal duties on the daily roster. Thus, Nika is the beauty parlor operator (yes, such an institution does exist on the kibbutz), Yossi is a gym teacher, Rinat works in the nursery school, Vered is in charge of the kibbutz clothing supply room, etc. Mira, who works in the greenhouse, has seven children and eight grandchildren, besides which, her husband is a member of the Knesset (Mehahem

Raz). Noa, a veteran participant, has kitchen duties.

Weekly rehearsals are held on what is supposed to be their free time. The members range in age from 2B to 56, and many of them are related to each other. There are no stars, and no one is listed as a soloist. Their performance is collective, in the best kibbutz spirit. They are not a choir or choral society, it was emphasiMd, but a folksong troupe.

A day in the life of a Gevatron nwmber might run something like this: up at 6 am. to work in the kitchen, in the electronics plant or the nursery school. After a late lunch, leave by bus for Tel Aviv where they have an evening concert-then back to the kibbuU by 1 a.m., to be up in the morning at six again. Yet their occasional trips abroad, and the prestige attached to membership, make some of the other kibbutz members envious of them. Those who wish to join must measure up to two criteria: one musical, the other a sociability test, to ensure that they will get along well together.

Founder and for many years director of the Gevatron is Rena Firstenberg, who admitted to us that she had for a long time been the dictator of the group. From others we heard that this was true, but without her unwavering dedication, the Gevatron would never have lasted, as it has, for almost 40 years. A few of the older members have dropped out, but younger ones are taking their place, following the same pattern and tradition. Rina herself, who still sings, follows a daily assignment in the kitchen, and came out to see us, wiping her hands on her apron.

In addition to their conunercial performances, they make special appearances before soldiers, and have sung before army units all the way from the Golan Heights to Sharm El-Sheikh. Their albums, now 12 in number, sell in the tens of thousands, and add to the kibbutz income. While their music has been almost exclusively Israeli, the last two albums were of Russian folk songs, with original Hebrew lyrics, perhaps by way of preparation for their impending totir of Poland and Hungary.

In terms of cold cash, Geva might make more money from Bakara, its electronic controls factory, from Shkediyah, its nut and fruit delicacy business, or from its cotton, cows and chickens, but none have made Geva more famous, nor reflected the spirit of the best elements of kibbutz life more than its Gevatron.

With the start of a new year, we would like to inform the community generally, and families who will be celebrating a Bar or Bat Mitzvah in 1987-88 specifically, that the "twinning" program of the Omaha Committee for Soviet Jewry is alive and growing.

The Bar/Bat Mitzvah is a significant milestone that commits us to the family of world Jewry. One way in which each individual boy or girl can demonstrate his/her acceptance of responsibility as an adult Jew is through a "twinning." By Mary FeUmwi An unusual woman who spent most of her adult Ufe in volunteer service and leadership roles in Omaha died last Saturday night after a long illness. The memory of her spiritad personality, her vivacity, her ability as a leader and a spokesman for Jewish life in Omaha and Israel will long linger with her many friends and family.

She was Mrs. Alexander D. Frank, better known to her friends as "Kitty" although her given name was Sarah Reva. She was one of the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Saul Katz, two warmly regarded early 1900'8 settlers in Omaha who assisted many immigrants from Russia with a first home and a first hot meal.

Kitty Frank, with her attractive red hair in her youth, her tremendous sense of humor and her great devotion to Jewish life became a vibrant part of the local, regional and national sense. She and her husband were charter members of Beth El Synagogue. She was one of the early presidents of Beth El Sisterhood, served as president of the Midwest Branch of the Na-

A major part of Kitty's organizational life was devoted to the Omaha Chapter of Hadassah which she headed and to the Yearbook which she edited for many years. She headed the Women's Division of the Jewish Philanthropies, was an active participant in Israel Bond campaigns, and according to her "regained her spirit" by several visits to Israel.

For many in my generation Kitty was teacher and mentor, inspiration and friend. In fact, because Kitty and her sister Ethel Edgar were bridesmaids at my parents' wedding, I have always felt a closeness, a relationship and a respect for this woman who was gregarious, colorful, one-ofa-kind in spirit, love of Judaism and of the Omaha Jewish community.

On Thursday, Jan. 22, workers in the Man's Diviaiaa of the FedMstioD Campaign will meat at the Jewish Community Center for a special training session with United Jewish Appeal Volunteer, Lewis (Dewie) Saltunan. Mr. Saltsman, a Chicago businessman and a member of the UJA National Training Center volunteer teem, was a participant in the 1986 Kadimah Missian to Eastern Europe and Israel, and the 1987 Mission to the Soviet Union and Israel.

"Awareness is key," insists Mr. Saltzman. "People just don't know the facts about contemporary life in Jewish America. Awareness leads to involvement and involvement ensures survival. Unlike the days following the Holocaust.

I never want my children to ever have to ask, 'Why didn't you do something?' And so we must."

"We're very lucky to have Lewis Saltzman in Omaha," coomiented Federation executive vice president, Steven J. Rod. "Rarely do we have the opportunity for professional training in fund-raising—we can only benefit from his visit."

"That's one of our goals," added Leonard Lewis, Men's Campaign chairman, "to be able to speak to each and every Jewish man in the Omaha community and relate our story in terms of his needs and ours."

' • The need for exports intensified in the first half of the 1980's. While Israel slashed its defense budget to help cut triple-digit inflation, Arab states continued to accelerate the Middle East arms race. From 1973 to the present, Arab states have imported over $100 billion worth of weaponry.

During the same period Israeli imports were about $10 billion. . , • A number of stories, citing private sources, have al' leged that Israel now ranks as one of the world's most important arms exporters. In fact, the authoritative U.S. Arms Control and Disarmament Agency's World Military Expenditures and Arms Transfers, 1985 listed the Soviet Union as number one, with 28.4% of all weapons exports from 1981 through 1984. The United States was second, with 24.6%, foUowed by France, 10.7%; Great Britain, 5.2%; West Germany, 4.3%, and Italy, 2.9%. The figures available, for 1980-1983, showed Israel's share at 0.77%.

• Many of the world's relatively few democracies build their own weapons or buy them from other Western states.

So Israel-which now reportedly ships half the exports of its military industries to the United States-must find other markets among the much more numerous non-democratic states.

This plainly clashes with the Jewish state's biblical vocation to be "a light unto the nations" and with the Zionist ideal of a model ethical state. But any government's first duty, as the U.S. Constitution notes, is "to provide for the common defense." To do so Israel must support its arms and related industries-now employing an estimated 10% of the work force—and has no choice but to. export a large portion of their output.

To protest this reality one should go not to Jerusalem but to the capitals of Europe, to Moscow and to Washington itself. Western Europe sells to the Arabs but not to Israel; Eastern Europe joins the Soviets in massive arms shipments to Syria, Libya and other Arab states. Washington sells to both sides and has no serious policy either to get the West to drop its boycott on arms to Israel or to induce both sides to cease fueling the Middle East arms race.

It is assumed that heads pf state and other world Jewish leaders will be on hand to participate in what is viewed by many Spanish Jews as an act of "justice and absolution."

Some even expect that there may also take place a symbolic annulment of the expulsion decree. It is heartening to note that Jews have not waited for such an official act, and have indeed "returned" over the past century, to the land of their ancient glory.

The year 1992 will indeed be a turbulant one for Spaniards, with two other major events making it a hot ticket. Barcelona wiU be hosting the Olympics. And Seville, the Pearl of Andalusia, will stage mammoth celebrations commemorating Christopher Columbus and his three-ship fleet gliding down the Guadaquivir, the river that bisects the dty, and out to sea in search of a new world. That legendary voyage began just a few weeks prjpr to the forced exile of the Jews of that city and every other in Spain.

Are you fa^^iliar with that expression "life's little embarrassing moments?" Every now and then, something happens that isn't earth-shaking, but if it happens to YOU, it can make you feel ill at ease, to say the least.

I was part of a small gathering of women the other day when one of them suddenly looked down at her feet and discovered she was wearing one black and one navy shoe.

Now you must understand, the shoes were otherwise identical, and this lady is young, very attractive and was perfectly groomed in every way. And if she hadn't gasped and said "ohmyGod look what I did," chances are pretty good nobody would have even noticed. It was good for a laugh (at her expense) and everyone agreed it was nothing to give importance to. Then something funny seemed tp happen.

Not one day later, a man of my acquaintance suffered a similar embarrassing moment.

Not until nearly 6 p.m., when he was scheduled to attend a very public meeting, did he notice he had walked around for an entire business day wearing the trousers to one suit and the coat to another. He reaUy did feel more than a little uneasy. All he could think about was how many people he had been in contact With during the day and how NOBODY said a word. His only conclusion was to wonder how many thought that grey pants and a brown jacket was his idea of well-dressed! That, of course, was the bottom line.

Feeling foolish.

Tfiis same man, who happens to be color-blind, usually is doubly careful about color combinations. In his younger days he was apt to be seen in one brown sock and one black, but a more mature attention to detail took care of that kind of accident!

Nobody likes to feel silly ... even though few of us stop to think that what makes us squirm is often not even noticed by others. Unless it's really blatant.

I mean like showing up for an appointment on the wrong day or being in the middle of a heated effort to make a point in an argument and suddenly loosing your train of thought and forgetting the point you were going for!

I did have to giggle the other day in the beauty shop when a woman absantmjndedly picked up my glasses, put them in her purse and left. Poor thing was so embarrassed when she was tracked down and came running back tp return my property. Actually, it was kind of funny, but to her it was acute discomfort.

Well, so much for the entire subject. Usually, these are the sort of things you can put in a certain category: This Should Be The Worst Thing That Ever Happens To You. Amen.

By Milton Jacoby MADRID (JTA)-An historic act of redemption will take place in 1992 in Spain when the Jewish people will symbolically return to the land from which they had been banished 500 years earlier by its sovereign rulers, the despots King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Their decree of expulsion was issued on March 31, 1492, and the Jews of Spain were given just three months to leave their homeland.

Although it may seem a long way off, historians and Jewish leaders in Madrid, Barcelona and Cordoba are begiiming discussions on en agenda for the nationwide dbervances in 1992, half a millennium later, of that year of infamy in Jewish history. It is expected that delegations frpm Israel and the diaspora will convene in Spain five years from now at the invitation of the national Jewish conununity and the government.

There ah^ady have been approaches to the World Jewish Congress and other bodies, but as yet there is no authoritative group within the country to plan and coordinate the historic event. It was learned from a number of historians and Jewish officials interviewed recently by this reporter that the government may be asked to appoint a commission of prominent Jews and non-Jews early in 1987.

The aim of the body would be to devise a program of observances to take place during the week pf March 31, 1992, in fprmer ' great centers ef Jewish life: Toledg, Cordoba, Barcelona, Girona, Zaragossa, and others.

By Tom Law H and PE department MIDGET ALI^STARS The Midget All-Stars opened up their season Thursday night with a convincing 4119 win over Miller Park YMCA. The AllStars never trailed in the game and kept adding to their lead with aggressive defense and wide open offense. Coach Law commented on the game, "I was very proud of the way the team played as a unit. The kids played hard and worked to assist each other as all nine players scored in the game. Guards Brent Zacharia, Jay Rubin and Justin Livonius did an excellent job of handling the ball and forcing our fast break. Jason Itkin and Jimmy Dean did a superb defensive job on Miller Park's wing players, and Eric Givner provided the outside shot for us. The key of the game was our rebounding provided by Joe Cuilan, Mark Dahir and Brian Blessie. It was also thrilling to know these kids are being supported by so many people and that this squad will keep supporters' interest with continued success."

The All-Stars next scheduled game will be Sunday, January 18 at 5:30 at the JCC.

Dr. James Schneider, 44, has been named director of the Paxton Manor Retirement Center located on Omaha's Central Park Mall, 14th and Famam.

Df. Schneider, who holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology, comes to Dr. Schneider Omaha from 12 years of experience as clinician and program administrator at the VA Medical Center in Leavenworth, Kans.

According to Steve Rothenberg, an owner of the Paxton, oyer one and a half million dollars has been expended in the last eight months on extensive redecorating and refurbishing.

The 10:00 game matched AZA-IA against Weizmann B2. The first half belonged to AZA-1A as they went into halftime with a comfortable 16-8 lead. Joe Platt led a second half spurt only to have his Weizmaim team fall short at the end 29-23.

Steve Givner led all scorers with 17 points.

The final game kept the fans in their seats as AZAIB was looking for their first win of the season against a stubborn Weizmann B team. Seven different players scored in the first half as Weizmann held on to a slim 14-12 halftime lead. Weizmann finally put away AZA-1 B in the second half to win 31-26. Sam Rosenstein read from Abe Gendler's contribution about ZOA (Zionist Organization) on religious pluralization and its accomplishments in Israel, where ' the ultra-Orthodox are trying to impose their will on others. We discussed the increased interest in Hanukkah this past year. Ed Weiner, from Villisca, Iowa, told us how his Christian neighbors there asked him questions about this holiday.

We discussed who will be .the intellectual leaders in the next century, and it appears that Asians will be foremost. Japan, at present, leads in banking, education and industry. Why? Ninetyfive percent of Japanese students learn English, few, if any, American students study Japanese.

Art Grossman talked about little Israek which will be surrounded by 188,000,000 Arabs, bent on Israel's destruction by the year 2000.

JERUSALEM-In view of the nuclear accident at Chernobyl in the Soviet Union, should Israel proceed with • program to build nuclear power plants? Opinions differed sharply during a panel discussion held recently here at the Third International Conference on Environmental Quality and Ecosystem Stability, which was attended by some 300 scientists from Israel and abroad.

Dr. Eshel Ben-Jacob of Tel Aviv University raised the safety issue, stressing that there can never be 100 percent security against enemy attack of a nuclear power plant, and subsequently it is not worth endangering the population by building such plants.

On the other hand, Prof. Yaakov Tadmor of Israel's Sorek Nuclear Research Center, argued that the Chernobyl accident should not be viewed as a typical situation, that there were serious faults in plant design and personnel training in Chernobyl, not present in other countries' facilities. He added that there is no such thing as "absolute safety" and that all human activities entail a certain degree of risk.

Ben-Jacob stressed the huge expense of building: a nuclear power plant, when alternate, cheaper sources of energy are readily available for the foreseeable futurepointing to existing conventional energy resources and relatively unexplored sources such as geothermal and solar energy. He said that Israel currently had sufficient power pltmt capacity to provide for the nation's energy neeids for the next 20, perhaps 40, years.

The Store-Ill No story, description or recollection of Omaha 24th Street, post World War II, is complete without inclusion of the Joe Adler Delicatessen located between Charles and Seward on the east side of the street.

This unbelievable establishment was the food-house of the delicacies of the Jewish folk of these parts. Asa young lad I well recall the admonition that you could get what you wanted at Adlers in traditional foods, as many such ethnic foods were not stocked by others or Adlers had a larger stock. From Bucksar (a Palestinian dried fruit) to Schmaltz herring (taken out of a barrel and thence wrapped in newspaper—usually the Forwarz), from pickled watermelon rind to most odiferous sauerkraut, Joe Adler stocked it. .

• Joe Adler, as well as his family, were hard and long workers. It was not unusual for a day to start at 5:30 a.m. and last until 11 that night. Joe and his wife Anne worked side by side, and were assisted by Hymie, Jake and Morrie. On occasional instances, sister Helen helped out for she had other work.

Joe Adler was a short man but powerfully built. He also had a flair for pickling various foodstuffs in large wooden barrels arid his stocky build must have come in mighty handy in moving his pickled wares from one spot to another. The pickled goods ran into an interesting varietypickles, tomatoes, peppers, cabbage (kraut), watermelon rind and other delicacies.

During the Passover, the stock of Adlers was expanded to include the holiday items. To my knowledge, he was the orJy one that obtained a matzo called Friedmans that sold considerably under the other lines, It was more economical than the regufer matzo, selling for 10' per pound and if Joe was in a good mood, yiju might even get it for 9' per pound.

Speaking of prices, it would be interesting to look at the prices in the early thirties and compare them with the prices today. The prices and other information of the store was furnished by Jake Adler. Thanks a lot Jake.

Here are a few of the prices as Jake recalled: Corned beef and pastrami—90* per pound, salami, bologna and wieners—39' per pound, lox (cut from a large slab of salmon with a very large knife)—90' per pound, salmon tips, whitefish—30' per pound, Halavah (if you kwked at Joe just right, first a smile and then a big free chunk of Halavah to the smiler)—20' per pound.

Joe, in his own manner, was a philanthropist and he so manifested his charitable acts without fanfare or publicity. Every Passover season Joe would have a large crock of Passover borsht prepared—sale price nothing—given away—the only requil'ement you had to furnish the container to remove your portion.

So much more could be written of these little stores that were so important to the continuation of the heritage of our Omaha Jewry. How nostalgic to think of those days long gone, the fabulous store and most, of the people—the Joes, the Annes and the Hymies of yesteryears.

Denver group tries to save former Golda Meir home DENVER (JTA) - The City of Denver may succeed in doing what the combined Arab armies never could— destroying Golda Meir's home.

The Intermountain Jewish News reports that the Denver Building Department board of appeals was set to vote Jan. IS whether to order the demolition of the Golda Meir House, the home of the late Israeli premier from 191314.

The board decided last month to postpone its final decision of an appeal by local residents Mel and Esther Cohen of a demolition decision reportedly backed

by Mayor Federico Pena.

They were representing the Golda Meir Memorial Association. To save the house, the board ordered the association to demonstrate

Building Department inspectors told the board that the house is dangerous because of structural weakness that could not practically be restored due to deterioration.

Paul Hoskins, director of the city's Community Development Agency, said that the city has spent upward of $27,000 and staff time on utilizing the house over the last six years.

The association asked for six months to begin its efforts to create a memorial to Meir with the house. It now is seeking funding from foundations as well as voluntary labor. A structural engineer it hired said the building would not immediately collapse and could be restored.

There was better news regarding the Pearl Street Temple here, which the City and County of Denver plan to purchase.

Mayor Pena called the building historically and architecturally important. "It was the center of the Jewish conununity for 60 years," said Rabbi Raymond Zwerin.

The city will invest $1 million, the Jewish News reports. The Pearl Street Temple Emanuel Foundation, the organization formed in 1983 to prevent the scheduled razing of the building, must raise $250,000 to finalize the purchase.
