On the front page of this issue is a painting by Ricklie Hoyt, a resident of the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home for the aged. Ms. Hoyt is 91 years old this month, and she can't wait to reach that magical birthday of 100 years.

"When I'm 100,1 am going to have a one-woman art show and we're going to have a big party to celebrate."

Ms. Hoyt j)ersonifies what is happening to our Jewish aged.

A common expression used to be, "Life begins at 40."

That was a long time ago. The age of 40 today is hardly considered middle-age. Even the so-called age of retirement — 65 — is being scoffed at by energetic seniors, who are able and willing to do more.

This explains why "Life Begins at 65" was selected as the theme of this Passover issue. The Jewish holiday of Passover is the Festival of Freedom,

an eight-dcQ^ period commemorating the dramatic deliverance of the Jewish people from enslavement in Egypt more than 3,000 years ago as recounted in Exodus.

And with^his special holiday issue, the Jewish Press is celebrating the freedom of the aged. Included in this edition are stories of people above and beyond 65, men and women who are doing things that would not have been thought of years ago.

It is the hope of the staff and the Jewish Press Board of Directors that the issue will serve as an inspiration to those not yet in their mid-sixties.

This is the month of Passover, the time to celebrate freedom, and the opportunity to look to a full life in the future.

Once a teacher, always a teacher

By Morris Maline Dorothy Goldkrand opened a beautiful edition of art photos saying that one of her Russian friends had given it to her.

The inscription read as follows: "To my wonderful teacher and nicest person, Mrs. D. Goldkrand with respect and love."

It was signed: "From Joe Pollack!

I'll never forget your lessons."

"He's now a doctor practicing in Philadelphia, and another student I had is a doctor in New Jersey," Mrs. Goldkrand said.

She refers to the two Russian emigrants as former students and points out that they are just two of many former students she hears from on a regular basis.

"Teaching the Russian emigrants who came to Omaha turned out to be a highlight of my life. It was a very gratifying experience and to this day I get cards, letters and telephone calls from many of them."

Mrs. Goldkrand recalled those "hectic" days, suggesting that her training as a schoolteacher helped her teach English to the emigrants.

"It took a 'lot of patience, doing the same things over and over again ... I used to print cards and place them next to the object to be learned, and they would learn by saying the word and seeing the object."

She pointed out that in those days Miriam Simon and Shirley

Goldstein were constantly seeking volunteers to help the new emigrants.

"Many of them were engineers, and they all were highly motivated to learn. Now, most of thefh have left Omaha for good jobs in various parts of the country, but I still hear from them."

It's much more (fifficult for Mrs. Goldkrand to get around these days.

She has Parkinson's disease so she has given up driving her own auto.

"I take the MOBY bus to the doctor and dentist and sometimes ceramics classes. Other than that I spend a lot of my time on knitting, crocheting and needlework."

Some of "her refugees" who are still in town "take me places and com^ to my apartment to fix things."

"They have been marvelous to me, Mrs. Goldkrand learned about helping Jews early in life. Her mother was a founder of the National Council of Jewish Women chapter iri Portland, Maine.

Her mother also was a school teacher and Mrs. Goldkrand recalls conversations around the dining room table, conversations about teaching displaced persons in Boston.

Mrs. Goldkrand spent a <:ouple of years teaching displaced persons at a large school in Dorchester and ultimately came to Omaha to retire.

This wasn't to be.

Dorothy Goldkrand Upon settling in Omaha, Mrs. Goldkrand was told of the need for teachers to help the Russian emigrants. The need was relayed to her

by Silvia fJoffman, a friend of Mrs. Goldkranrfs daughter-in-law.

"It wasn't long before I was involved going from one apartment to another ... Now, I'm just thrilled with their accomplishments."

Finally, it got to the point where the Russians stopped coming and her illness worsened.

Retirement, in effect, could be said to be knocking on Mrs. Gold-

krand's door.

But, then a new interest and opportunity presented itself.

Rachel Shahar, an Israeli residing temporarily iq Omaha with her physician-husband, happened to be in the Federation Library one day.

She told Edye Wolf that she had trouble pronouncing English words and that she could use some help.

"Let's call Dorothy," was Mrs. Wolf's proposed answer.

The call was made, and now Mrs. Goldkrand is back at work ... once a teacher always a teacher.

Useful and fulfilling sunset years

By Bert Lewis If the theme of this Jewish Press is to celebrate the joy of usefulness and fullfiiment in one's sunset years, then we must include a particular couple. Their story bears telling.

Unlike the others featured in this edition, this story was not done from an interview, but rather from first hand knowledge. The couple are my parents, Mary and Jake Wine. 1 chose to tell the story myself because 1 didn't think they would consent to an interview and also because I felt it was the best way. Let me begin, then, to tell about their respective retirement years.

I'll start with my mother. It's difficult to say when she "retired" from regular duties and began doing "outside" work. Since I can remember, she answered any call for assistance that came from anywhere.

When she reached the years called "senior" she really got busy.

She is perhaps bestjcnown in this town for her tireless efforts in two areas, the Bikur Cholim organization and the old Dr. Sher Home for the Aged. These two, from the standpoint of her volunteer service, almost merged into one entity. This is best understood by explaining the purpose of Bikur Cholim: to assist the sick and needy.

Some 40 years ago, mother, along with other members of that women's club, worked tirelessly to help

in the development of the Sher Home. They began with fund raising and continued by subsidizing this project or that after the Home was built. Through the years, they paid for thousands of dollars worth of equipment as well as donating countless hours of personal time. I think that's where mother shines in the memory of many â&#x20AC;&#x201D; because of the weekly sessions she headed.

They became known as Occupa-

tional Therapy, but to the residents they were "Mary Wine Day." She, and her helpers, brought sewing projects, knitting, crocheting, quiltmaking, crafts of every description to the folks who gathered. And always, to finish the day, coffee and home-made goodies brought especially for a treat.

For special holidays there were special parties, with traditional refreshments and gifts and general

showering of love and good will. I beUeve mother and Bikur Cholim people decorated the first Sukkah at Sher and continued to do so almost throughout its existence.

In addition to the work of the Sher Home, Bikor Cholim; supported by a small membership of faithful women, looked after many of the needy in the general community. As its president for decades, mother fielded the calls that came for request for anything from money to pay rent to Passover groceries. Many a Kosher meal was cooked in her kitchen and delivered to a patient in a hospital. Perhaps her disapproval of today's methods of lending help can be understand when one remembers her help often began with a phone call from Paul Veret! Those were different times.

Now, since the Sher Home closed and the Rose Blumkin Home opened several years ago, the volunteer work done by mother is also different. Despite the fact that her own energy is limited, she still is involved. Her sewing machines are in a special place at Blumkin, and on a regular basis she's there, mending and repairing for the residents.

Alterations and just plain fixing have become her job.

Some of the folks like td^sit with her and visit, some help, some make requests she cannot fill (I'm not a tailor!"), but when the day is done and she goes home, she never fails

She also continues to bake enough traditional goodies to be sent to Jewish residents of all the other nursing homes in the city, for Purim and Rosh Hashanah.

To follow in her footsteps would take some special commitment; she is, indeed, a superior role model.

The other half of this special team is my dad. A self employed businessman his eoiire working life.

Art Grossman - busier now than ever

By Bert Lewis Do you know Art Grossman? If you are a part of the Omaha Jewish community, chances we better than good the answer is yes.

The fact is, this man covers a lot of territory and can be seen all over town. Who is he? Well, you probably knowhe's the husband of Anne and the father of Ronald, JRoberta, Arlene and Larry.

And three assorted grandchildren are mentioned proudly when you ask about Act's family.

Art was retired (not voluntarily) at age 65 from his job as Regional Manager of Renfield Importers nine years ago; as it turned out, he was not retired from activity. He says "it took me mz months to connect with a trade journal named The Nebraska Beverage Analyst and I've worked for them since as a free lance writer, regularly contributing at least one column per issue." The edition I saw contained several articles, all with Art's byline.

About writing? "I've alwi^s written... I never had any formal training, but I write." That is, of course, only a small part of what the man does.

You see, Art is an extremely busy man in his retirement. His philosophy sums it up better than I can. Art says, "It's really simple. I felt I had an obligation to this community. It's been good to me and I wanted to put something back into it. Besides, bears hibernate, people aren't supposed to." That's how be became a volunteer.

"A person isn't fuiished at 65. There's so much to do out there. So many things to keep busy with. So many places where a person is needed."

Art believes that "every day is a gift that should be treated as such. Open it with anticipation, with interest. One of the worst problems of older adults is the feeling of not being needed, not remaining useful."

Arthur counts his blessinp and is quick to make special note of the importance of a mate.

How exactly does this man keep busy? Despite some .'serious health problems, he Ims managed to do (and is still doing) everything from work for the synagogue, the Federation, communityat-large to column writing. He's been a four term president of the Contest Writers Association and is actively involved in the Foster Grandparent Advisory Council. He has been named Voliinteer of the Year time and again and has served in some capacity for nearly every agency of the Jewish Federation. That's for openers.

You need fund raising? Call Art. You need collections from unpaid old pledges, or somebody to make a speech, teach a class, lead a discussion group, work on Multiple Sclerosis, h^lp with Foundation Development? Call Art. You need somebody who can tell you whit it's like to visit 21 foreign countries? Who knows

how this one was named and why that one is always in the middle of a civil war; 8omebo(i^ who knows which Hawaiian-island has a synagogue and which doesn't? Ask Art The Grossmans enjoy the pleasures of travel and have managed to get around exceptionally well. Art proudly states, "You know our son Larry is witii the State Department and works in Embassy Security? Anne and I have visited him in every onT of his foreign assignments except for Viet Nam." That's why Art is able to discuss the beauties of Iceland or Greenland or Belgium, or the problems of El Salvador oi the joys of Israel. Like most everything else he does, he'finds travel stimulating.

This seems to be the underlying force in the man ... he finds excitement and pleasure wherever he goes.

Having had a large share of pain and discomfort, he has finally learned to use a priority system. He says, "I'm still called to many meetings, and I try to attend when I feel they really are of importance. If they aren't, I don't go running the way I once did." He tries to pace himself, to be better able to do things he feels are most significant.

This is a man who believes some of life's best work can be done after "retirement." He believes a person should prepare for that time, so there is no sudden stop of activity. He says, "Plaii ahead. Try to develop some hobbies. Teach others. Do for others. One person CAN make a difference, and when you^elp soniebody else, you forget your own pain."

It must be good advice, if Arthur Grossman is to be judged by his appearance. He looks Uke a happy, busy, contented man. After a little conversation with him, it becomes perfectly ctear that's exactly what he is. And one other thing.

He's extremely grateful to be able to do all those things which fill his days.

Hearing toss may be devastating ^^^^ If we live long enough, most of us will experience hearing loss. Twenty-five percent of people over 55 years of age and 60 percent of those over 70 years of age have hearing loss. Because hearing is so closely tied to communication, the implications of even partial loss of hearing may be devastating.

As one loses hearing, it becomes more difficult to understand what is being said and typically, the person becomes withdrawn, venturing to say less and less. As the need to repeat and clarify what is said increases, conversation is reduced to only essentials and much of normal social interchange is left unsaid. Thus, hearing loss becomes a very isolating handicap. t Hearing loss usually occurs slowly over periods p '''•• of many years and at first the problem may be quite subtle. Those experiencing hearing loss are often convinced that people are mumbling and

though well aware that speech is occurring, cannot quite understand the words. As the loss increases, it becomes necessary to turn the television or radio up louder and others complain of the volume.

How does one determine if there is a problem?

A careful test of hearing is important to know if there is hearing loss and more importantly, how such loss may be interpreted in terms of communication needs. Such testing can be accomplished by an audiologiat, a person who holds a master's degree which has included course work and supervised clinical experience. Audiologists who pass a national examination are allowed to use the letters CCC-A after their name. They are well equipped to determine if hearing loss is present and advise on rehabilitative measures.

tance to explore the possibility of medical treatment. The vast majority of hearing losses associated with aging are not medically remediable, however, there are exceptions and if the loss can be reversed, all efforts should be made to do so.

There is probably no single rehabilitative tool for hearing impairment more important than a well prescribed and fitted hearing aid. Since their introduction, hearing aids have been improved 80 that now almost every kind of loss can benefit from amplification. Hearing aids are dispensed by audioiogists and by hearing aid dealers. The former has training cited above and th6 latter may be licensed with a high school education, informal training in the area of hearing, and by passing an examination.

The choice of aids and modification require highly technical knowledge of the acoustics of speech and the properties of the hearing aid. If the aid is secured while there is still a good amount of residual hearing, the task of adjusting to amplification may be easier than if one waits until the loss has increased. ' Although the hearing aid may restore the person to more normal function, even the best hearing aid cannot completely normalize hearing.

Hearing aids break down and need routine servicing. If the user must reduce the volume in order to avoid the high pitched, whistling sound known as feedback, a new earmold may be needed. Hearing aid users frequently put up with problems, unaware that routine servicing may provide a solution.

Whether you use a hearing aid or not, selfhelp measures are necessary for those with hearing loss. Distance from the speaker and background noise destroy the listening situation.

Evaluate the conversation or listening setting and where possible, improve it. Making necessary adjustment to improve communication may require assertive behavior. At home, group furniture for closeness and turn off the television during conversation. In other settings, move your chair closer to the person you wish to talk to and as far as possible from noise producers, such as fans, air conditioning units, speakers for background music, etc. , In restaurants, dit away from such speakers or explain the problem and ask if the music can be turned down. In large groups, move to the edge to talk. Lighting ia also a factor as it helps to have a good view of the speaker's face to utilize visual cues. In an ayditorium, sit in front to get the beat advantage of both hearing and vision.

Remember, evaluate ^nd try to arrange the listening situation for closeness to the speaker and distance from background noise.

There are devices on the market which help those with hearing loss, such as an instrument that flashes a light when the telephone or doorbell rings. Such signals may be heard if the house is quiet but with the television on, they are frequently missed.

Synagogues and other auditoriums are beginning to use PM systems which allow the speaker to broadcast over a special microphone which the listener picks up on an individually worn unit.

Telephone headsets which amplify speech are extremely helpful. Television and radio pick ups are available which allow the hearing impaired person to hear without setting the volume uncomfortably loud for other members of the household.

If hearing becomes extremely impaired, a decoder can be obtained to take advantage of television captioning that is used with many programs.

Cochlear implants, permanently placed electrodes in the inner ear, are being discussed in the media. For most people, this is not a practical solution as it ia used only when the loss is profound and hearing aids provide no help. If such is the case, the hearing impaired person should investigate this procedure.

Research is providing answers to some of the most troublesome problems with hearing aid use and in a few years hearing aids should be much more effective, particularly in the presence of background noise.

Ruben Epstein remembers when...

By Claudia Sherman Ruben Epstein came to the United States in 1910. He was 23 years old at the time. His family came from "a little town in Rus&ia," he said. His father had been a butcher and owned a considerable amount of property in Russia. Before the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917, Russia "was the finest country in the world," Mr. Epstein insisted. His was not a big family, he said. "There were just four brothers and one sister." All of them, except for the sister and one brother, eventually came to America.

"If 1 don't come," Mr. Epstein explained, they wouldn't have come either. "I just came to see what was going on. I was going back the next day." He lived with relatives at 26th and "P'* Streets. He was encouraged to go to the stockyards, his family all having been in the butcher business, to get a job. He was one of four or five men out of 75 or 80 picked to work by Swift & Co. Dismayed by "blood up to your knees" in the slaughterhouse, Mr. Epstein stayed only two days.

He went to work on the loading docks for Cudahy for 27'/2 cents pe&hour. "But it was awfully hard work" and he left after two weeks. "I had a few dollars," he said, and didn't need to work so hard.

At that time, there were nine kosher meat markets in Omaha. Mr. Epstein took a job for $25 per month, which included board and room, with a Jewish family that owned one of the kosher shops. "I felt very much part of this family," he .commented, and he stayed for two years until he was offered $100 per month by another butcher at 12th and Capitol. Eventually, he was offered half the ownership of the shop which he did buy, The shop moved to 1415 North 24th Street, and Mr. Epstein stayed there until 1923 when he brought his parents to Omaha from Russia and gave his father his half of the business.

stein bought a dry goods store in Florence which sold to farmers. "Florence was just a little country town then," Mr. Epstein remembered. After his partner died in 1927, Mr. Epstein sold the store back to its original owner.

Returning to the stockyards, Mr. Epstein bought cattle which he sold to the packing houses until 1930 when he opened his own slaughterhouse at 26th and "M" Streeta. He took in a partner, and they moved their business to "a bigger place" at 31st and "L." In 1950, Mr. Epstein sold out his share of the business to his partner's family and went back to work at the stockyards in South Omaha buying and selling cattle, He retired in 1970 at the age of 83.

Today, Mr. Epstein lives alone in the house he and his wife, Sarah Cohen Epstein, bought 26 years ago. The Epsteins were married in 1916.

She died in 1978. Ruben and Sarah had four children. Their two sons are Sidney who lives in Las Vegas and Sol who lives in Omaha. Also in Omaha is daughter Bernice Epstein Adler. One other child, Betty Epstein Rosenblatt died about five years ago. The family also includes six granchildren and two great grandchildren who live ,here.

Mr. Epstein drove a car until he was 90 years old. His children bring in his groceries and other necessities. He likes to work in his backyard, and he does watch television "all day long," he said.

Until his eyesight began to fail, "I loved to read, but I can't see too well now without this," he explained fingering a magnifying glass.

At 98 years old, Epstein won't consider living in an apartment or a residence for senior citizens. "I looked at an apartment," he said, "a little dinky room. Here I can sleep as long as I want. Nobody's gonna tell me anything to do. I can eat breakfast at 11 o'clock. Even if they gave it to me," he said, referring to a retirement home, "1 wouldn't go." Mr. Epstein said if he had things to do all over again, "I would buy all the property

Ruben Epstein in the world." He remembers when land at 132nd and Center Streets cost $200 an acre. He also remembers the past with an unfaltering sense of specificity. For instance, he recalls when he was 16 years old gping out to the country with his father. "It was on a Wednesday, five o'clock in the morning." They bought a heifer "She was a little wild." They took her home, walking 60 miles. "The rabbi came. We slaughtered the heifer and sold kosher meat. We made five or six dollars."

Mr. Epstein will be 99 years old on July 28.

Although he doesn't drive a car any longer, in the summertime, he takes the bus downtown if he has business there. One time on the bus someone recognized him and called out in amazement, "My God, Ruben, are you still alive?" Ruben is not only alive, but if it wasn't for artery by-pass surgery he had on his legs a few years ago, he insists he feels good. "1 feel the same as 1916.1 don't know the difference. And if he could walk better," he asserted, "I'd still go down to the stockyards everyday.

A lifetime fove of music

By Claudia Sherman At 89 years old, Jacob Rosenberg can identify the name and composer of any symphony or opera he hears. Most of them he knows by heart.

"My head is full of music," he said. Cantor Aaron Edgar, Rosenberg's roommate at the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home, wonders how anyone can remember so many operas so well.

Mr. Rosenberg listens to records on the stereo, which his son gave him, in his room. The collection he listens to now is only about one-third of the extensive symphonic musical library he once owned. He listens for his own satisfaction, he emphasized. At ten o'clock every Thursday morning though, he shares his music with other residents of the Blumkin Home, listening to classical music he selects from his collection.

"I was brought up on cantorial music," he noted. As a youngster growing up in Rovna in the Ukraine region of Russia, "I sang with a famous cantor, Zeildel Rovna. "I was outstanding as a boy alto," he said. The cantor thought Mr. Rosenberg might turn into something "extraor-^ dinary," Mr. Rosenberg explained. "But to his sorrow I didn't after my voice changed." A prominent music teacher thought Mr. Rosenberg's voice could be developed, but at $10 per lesson, he couldn't afford the opportunity.

As a child of three years old in Rovna, Mr. Rosenberg began his formal education. By the time he was nine, he had already studied the six books of the Mishnah.

Then he persuaded his parents to send him to another Jewish school, kept up by the government. The school was Jewish in the sense that Jews were educated there, although no Jewish subjects were taught. However, by the age of 17, he couldn't continue his education because of Jewish persecution. "There was no future for us there," he said. If he wasn't in school, he'd be conscripted into the army. In the army, as a Jew, he'd be exposed to people who would look down upon him, to say the least.

Jacob Rosenberg So in 1914, Mr. Rosenberg joined his older brother in New York. He served in the United States Army during World War I and was sent to Central Officers Training School.

In 1923, Mr. Rosenberg returned to Russia.

During the year he spent there, he met a girl from his hometown named Rachel. She was a milita% nurse serving in the Russia Army. They were married, and Rachel was smuggled out of the country. Mr. Rosenberg's parents died in Russia before World War II began. Three sisters perished in the Holocaust.

Jacob and Rachel Rosenberg lived in Brooklyn where he became successful in the building construction business. He became president of Aetna Realty and Building Corporation from which he retired in 1963.

During the winter months when business was slow, "I'd be at the Metropolitan Opera six or seven times a week," Mr. Rosenberg remiijisced.

He explained how he eventually became part of a clique which received free passes to opera performances. Members of this group, in turn, were depended upon to bring in "a reliable element" to applaud for performers. Among the singers Mr. Rosenberg saw and heard were Enrico Caruso, Feodor Chaliapin, and Giovanni Martinelli.

The Rosenbergs had two sons. Dr. Milton J. Rosenberg teaches social psychology at the University of Chicago, and Dr. Norman Rosenberg is a agronomist at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. Norman and his wife, Sarah, spent five years in Israel as agronomist advisers to the Israeli goviernment. Quickly skipping over his career achievements, Mr. Rosenberg steers the conversation toward his "pubhc functions." Before he came to the United States he belonged to an organization which translated means "Lovers of Zion." In this country, he belonged to Poale'Zion, the Labor Zionist Movement. "I was very well known and

active in this organiution," he said. He visited Israel in 1953. "I had in mind to settle there, but the climate didn't agree with my wife. It was just too harsh for her."

After retiring from the building construction business, the Rosenbergs were able to visit their sons frequently. During a visit to Lincoln in 1978, Rachel became ill and could not travel. So they lived in Lincoln until March, 1984, when she died and Jacob came to the Blumkin Home.

"I am a traditional Jew. I have to function in

^ a Jewish environment," Rosenberg said. He reads from the Torah and leads services at the Blumkin Home on Shabbat and on holidi^. The Blumkin Home's Jewish atmosphere is of utmost importance to him. He feels a certain amount of responsibility for maintaining Jewish tra\iition and culture at the Blumkin Home.

Mr. Rosenberg has gone to the Orpheum Theatre to hear the Omaha Symphony, and he has taken in some lectures at the Jewish Community (continued on page 19)

He enjoys reading and has read almost all the large print books at the Jewish Federation Library. He feels badly that his vision is failing, because "without reading, I don't know what I'd do," he lamented. He helped

the librarian identify the authors and titles of all the Yiddish books in the library. Mr. Roaenberg admitted he watches a little television, mostly the news. He also attends some aocial activities. He manages to keep busy ten to 12 hours a day.

Summing up his achievements of 89 years, Mr. Rosenberg said he is satisfied with his accomplishments, proud of his sons, and his good name. He feels it is important to learn from one's errors, and as it says in the Talmud, do not blame

someone else for your failures. Mr. Rosenberg said he learned from his mistake*, analysed them, and tried to turn them around He is disturbed that life in this country ia too good for the Jews. He teibm that history will repeat itself. "Assimilation scarea me," he said But he hopes that democracy will prevail, and Jews will save themselves by returning more to tradition in such wqys as celebrating the Jewish holidcors. "Our future I see very much depending on living by the Laws of the 'Ibrah."

By Claudia Sherman Today's hectic life styles frequently don't leave time in our schedules to do the things we know we should do, much less the things we really would like to do. There are those who postpone their extracurricular intarests such as exercising, hollies and volunteerism by rationalizing that theyli do them later on in life when their children grow up and when the time-consuming activities of making a living to make ends mMt don't take up so much time and energy. Did you ever wonder just how many people live long enough and stay hedthy enough to fulfill their postponed dreams and goals?

Sylvia Ross could be an inspiration for those of us who either by choice or necessity put off what we can't do today until tomorrow... or until next year or even longer. She worked until she was 73 years of age, starting in her father's grocery store on 24th and Lake and most lately at Ross Grocery in Benson which she and her late husband, Charles Sol Ross, owned and ran for 46 years. She also raised four children at home which she "keeps kosher now and always has," she commented. Four years ago, Sylvia sold the last of three grocery stores she and her husband had owned and began a new kind of life. "It took about six months to get used to it," she said.

But at 77, She drives about eight miles (one way) from her apartment to the Jewish Community Center four or five times a week, always stopping to pick up a few friends along the way. She exercises and belongs to a'number of volunteer and social organizations. She goes to the opera, to the Omaha Community Playhouse, to Joslyn Art Museum, to productions at the JCC, and even squeezes in time to take a class in Hebrew reading.

Born and reared in Omaha, Sylvia isn't kidding when she says, "1 was always busy." Besides working in her father's store, during her years at Technical High School, according to the school yearbook, she was a class president, class secretary, a member of the dramatic club, speaker's bureau, the girls' indoor volleyball team, the girls' swim team, debating societyrthe mixed choruses, girls' glee club, the yearbook and she was on the honor roll.

She's looking forward to attending the 61st reunion of her graduating class in August.

When Sylvia finally did retire she said it was because "the kids were after me to sell the store," and just because "it was time." Upon her retirement, she was honored by the Benson Commercial Chib as the Woman of the Year in recognition of her many years of serving the community. Tb her knowledge, she is the only woman to be given this honor by the Benson Commercial Club.

Also hanging on the wall df her apartment is an official document signed by Governor Bob Kerrey, his firet ofTidal eiglMture as governor, she was told, appointing Sylvia an admiral in the (mythical) Great Nswy of the State of Nebraska. The document is dated January, 1983.

She has been group president three or four times as well as treasurer of the regional Board. She still belongs to Hadassah and is also the current president of the Hatikvah Chapter of Amit Women, formerly Mizrachi Women, "which takes up a lot of time." Since 1940, she explained, "1 have kept the books for Bikur Cholim" which serves local needy Jewish families. Also active in the Jewish Federation campaign, the former businesswoman has been chairman of the Business and Professional Group.

Three times a week, Sylvia is a LOVE volunteer serving at the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home. She has arthritis in her knees, and upon the recommendation of her doctor, she takes swimnastics three times a week at the JCC. "It makes me feel better all over," she noted.

A member of the YES (Young Energetic Seniors) Group which meets at the JCC and Beth El Synagogue, Sylvia algo sings in the YES choral group.

• She belongs to Beth Israel Synagogue as well as Beth El Synagogue where she has been a member of the congregation for 55 years. She attends services every Saturday morning with her daughter, Jean Epstein.

Recently interviewed by the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging, Sylvia was asked to take part in that agency's retired senior volunteer program. Participants in the program talk to students in area school about their lives and careers.

One of Sylvia's fsvorite pastimes when she finds herself at home is cooking and baking. She also ei^ys travellhig to California, Boston, Atlanta, Cincinnati, Memphis, and New York to visit her out-of-town children. She is a pandmother to 11 and also has ei^t great-grandchildren.

It's important "to have interests in life and to be interested in other people," Sylvia said. "I think that's why I never got interested in cards.

If I wanted recreation, I'd go swim or I'd go to the opera. Or Td read up on coins" which she used to collect when her children were young and went to bed early at night.

"There are so many things to do," she smiled, "I just lu^ I stay well so I can enjoy them all."

'I never really noticecl my age...

By Claudia Sherman "For 46 yean, six months, and 22 days," Max and Milt Moskovitz ran their Cherry Garden Garage at 3701 Leavenworth.

They started their all-purpose garage from scratch, explained Max, who is 88, as he sat in the living room of his home in Happy Hollow surrounded by plants and potted flowers which he frequently brings home to his wife Anne. He's come far from the "tough neighborhood or Red Light District" around 13th and Davenport where he was born.

Max worked the night shift at the Cherry Garden Garage which was a 24-hour operation. "It never closed," he said. His customers in^ eluded well-known Omahans such as Peter Kiewit, Milton Livingston, the Schimmel and the A. W. Gordon families. The Moskovitz brothers serviced Cadillacs mostly and "we had one Rolls Royce," he added.

"But no matter what time I came home, my dear little sweet wife was waiting for me even if it was five o'clock in the morning," he recalled.

•He retired in 1966 because he felt "we'd worked very hard and itcame to the point where I wanted to devote time to our real estate business and spend more time with my family" which included daughters Arlene and Lois. Max wanted to be able to have more time to go fishing and to travel, too.

Max has sold most of his real estate holdings in the last 20 years, "but we still have a couple buildings left." His commercial property includes office space and stores. He supervises maintenance and repairs on the buildings by making sure it is done competently and with the best materials for the job. He goes, to the library two or three times a week 8ometim«B in order to research what would be the best way to handle a job that needs to be done on his property.

During pleasant weather, Max gels up early and lets Anne sleep.

He goes outside to work in his yard.

"I enjoy it," he said. "It's medicine."

He once cared for 60 rose bushes in his yard. Now he's down to 18. He takes pride in maintaining his home and yard equipment and has a wellequipped workshop in his garage.

He had a lawnmower for 23 years and although he only does some of the grass cutting himself, he just bought a new one. He busies himself with odd jobs around the house, "some light snow shoveling," and running errands.

Devoted to his wife who suffered a heart attack in 1977, he takes her shopping and to the hairdresser.

"It's disturbing for a woman to look at four walls all the time. She needs to get out. We used to go to all the Nebraska football games," he quipped, "but not in the last year 1ft two. I'm just not the young man I used to be. Father time is catching «q)," he Confided.

However, Max said, "I never really noticed my age until about 86." He has a little arthritu, but confirmed that he doesn't smoke and is almost a non-drinker. He loves to eat fruits and vegetables «nd seafood too," he commented as he held out his two hands to show how steady tl\ey are. No shaking for this man who wears a pair of 20-

Max and Anne Moskovitz year-old glasses "for reading only, not for driving," he explained.

"I haven't seen a doctor for nearly 50 years," he conceded. He broke his nose playing basketball when he was 28 years old and had to have an operation to repair it. "But I've never collected a penny on Medicare or Medicaid," he continued. He hasn't had a problem renewing his driver's license. And he has never had a flu shot. "But let me say this in all honesty: I should have gone to the doctor when I broke my ribs and either broke or sprained my ankle," he admitted. He isn't proud that he hasn't been to the doctor.

In fact, he feels guilty about it and hopes "God won't punish me for it."

Besides taking care of his yard and home, running errands, and supervising his real estate holdings.

Max attends World War I Veterans meetings, American Legion meetings and is quite active in the American Legion Forty and Eight auxiliary. He also belongs to the Omaha Rose Society and the American Rose Society. His daughter Lois said, "He's a ferocious reader."

Next to his chair in the living room were copies of "Sports Illustrated," "Flower and Garden," "Time," and "Newsweek." He likes to read "The Wall Street Journal" as well.

Max advises "every young person to get a good education. Without a degree, they're at a disadvantage in making a Uvelihood. You've got to have the ability and the determination, and you've got to have a goal," he counseled. As for retirement, the grandfiather of four boys, insists "that a rocking chair will kill you quicker than anything else.

Keeping active is the best way."

When Anne is not feeling well.

Max washes the dishes for her and even takes breakfast to her upstairs in bed. He's learning to cook.

"This is a man who never opened a can," his daughter Lois smiled.

"But he's learning. He makes delicious omelets. He goes to the grocery store everyday. He gives mother eggnog to build her up. He did the laundry/last week for her for the first time."

Lois described how protective and affectionate her lither is with her mother: "He holds on to her when they go out. He always kisses her when he leaves and when he arrives home. He always calls her just before he comes home or asks her when he comes home if he can get her something or'do something for

her. He's profuse with compliments about how pretty and how young sht looks." For instance, Lois said, after Anne has her hair done at the hairdresser, Max usually says, "She's gorgeous." Before he goes to bed at night, he sets place mats and coffee cups on the kitchen table. He doles out her medicine and his vitamins.

In their daughter's words, Max and Anne, who will celebrate their 56th wedding anniversary in June, "are very thankful for the years they've had since his retirement.

They feel grateful for what they've had together although they're more realistic about the years left to them. They realize how fortunate they are. They've always had a good marriage, but since Daddy's retirement, it's been exceptional."

Harry and Elizabeth Rabenstem

By Howard K. Marcus What's it like to be married to the 8ame person for 70 years?

You might try asking Harry and Elizabeth Rubenstein. The couple recently celebrated their 70th anniversary of their wedding day, April 12, 1916.

"We've been very lucky," said Mrs. Rubenstein, 91, who lives with her husband in the Rose Blumkin Home.

Both life-long Omahans, the Rubensteins met each other at a party in 1913. When they married three years later, a honeymoon did not immediately follow.

Mr. Rubenstein had to go to work at 4 a.m. the next morning. A year later, though, the 3^ung couple did take a trip to Chicago to visit relatives.

The Rubensteins talked about their long life together in an interview at the Rose Blumkin Home. Though things have been good most of the time, Mrs. Rubenstein said their life has "had some ups and downs, too."

Some of the "ups" included a great deal of travel in both the United States and other countries. Among the places visited: France, Israel, India, Sweden and Denmark.

The past 70 years have also included Mr. Rubenstein's decades-long business career.

That began in 1906, when he was 14 years old. , He started by selling butter and eggs from a horse and wagon, and called his business the ExCel-0 Company.

Eventually, he founded Harry Rubenstein Food Specialties, a company wbdch dealt pri-

marily in dairy products.

Some of his clients included Omaha hotels, such as the Blackstone and the Fontenelle.

A proud Mrs. Rubenstein said her husband started the cheese business in Omaha, and that he was responsible for bringing a,number of different types of cheese to the Omaha market.

What is Mr. Rubenstein's philosophy of living?

"Like everything else you do in life," he said, "you gotta be motivated." Also, he said it is very important to have faith in people, and believe that "everyone is alright."

Mr. Rubenstein said one thing he missed during his life was a better education. He had very little formal trainingYet, he recalled that people at all levels of society treated him well, in spite oi a lack of education.

The Rubensteins have lived through much of the history of Omaha's Jewish community, and took part in some of it.

In 1923, when a group of Jews began the Highland Country Chib, the Rubensteins were among them. At the time, a yearly membership cost $500.00.

Mr. Rubenstein played golf then, and continued to play until he was 87 years old. "I wasn't any good though," he said, but quickly added that he always had lots of fun playing. . Jh^ Rubensteins now hold honorary memberships in the organization.

They have two dauj^ters, seven grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Reflecting on their life, Mrs. Rubenstein said, "We've been very lucky."

By Rabbi Jonathan RoMnbaum One may well be tempted to wonder what someone with my background can contribute to a discussion of modern dance. I, myself, have asked that question, yet, upon studying Ms. Sokolow's work, viewing the performance of her troupe, and watching the videotape of "Dreams," her extraordinary depiction of the Holocaust, the relevance of her work to other fields is obvious.

As a specialist in religious studies, particularly Jewish studies, I feel her work to be both timely and gripping. Her choreography and what it seeks to convey is closely allied to the fundamental values of Judaism and to the intensive background in Jewish life which Ms. Sokolow experienced ^^from her childhood. |V Normally, if you are like me, when you attend a dance performance, [ you do so for one purpose: entertaiiunent. My experience with dance runs ||v the fiill gamut from "Swan Lake" to "A Chorus Line." Ms. Sokolow's goal ^f includes more than entertainment She seeks to convey the vays of the F world complete with emotions, intellect, and the focts of historical events. r For example, in the extraordinary work, "Dreams," there is a sequence of special pathos. Norman Pitlor

By Howard K. Marcus Norman Pitlor is a man with a contribution to make.

Now head of N. Pitlor and Son, the firm his father founded in 1908, Pitlor still puts in (ull days at the office.

Originally a plumbing firm, the company has grown to include a great deal of commercial heating and air conditioning work.

Now in his 66th year, Pitlor continues to work, at an age when many others have just retired.

He said that although he likes to travel and fish, the dailV routine of business is something that he epjoys.

"I think it gives me a sense of purpose, a sense of being needed, said Pitlojr, who believes he still

can make a contribution to the business.

A part of the business for almost 50 years, Pitlor said he never sets an alarm clock, yet awakens promptly at 6:45 a.m. each day.

Rtlor chooses what pressures he wants to put himself under, instead of letting the pressures get to Nm. The long days that follow are filled with activity. Pitlor's office is filled with blueprints and the other materials necessary to his work.

Pitlor appreciates his life a great deal.

Several years ago, he had a heart attack. His life has changed as a result.

"Now, I do what I want to do," he said.

Pitlor chooses what pressures he wants to put himself under, instead of letting the pressures get to him.

In fact, he sees his present situation Wi an enviable one.

His illness did impose some additional tasks on him, though. Walking is ndw a required Activity, and Pitlor is looking forward to doing more of it as the weather improves.

"I think it changed a lot of my outlook on life," he said of the whole eqwrience, poting that it caused him to realize the preciousness of life.

He said he now has a good outlook on life.

His business, which Pitlor feels is very much a part of him, has grown a great deal under his leadership.

Now, his son Steve works in the business. Pitlor said each generation of his family has enhanced the business with its own particular set of skills and education.

Noting that no generation has taken anything for granted, he siaid effort has been made by each Pitlor who has entered thb business.

Pitlor is very proud of what he has seen happen in the firm, and said that if his father Nathan were alive todiQr, he too would be happy.

"I think it's proven to be the best choice," said Pitlor of his long-ago decision to enter into the family business.

The only one of his father's sons to join the firm, Pitlor feels the effort he puts into his work is one of the things that helps him through life.

He credited the activity created by his work as a factor in his recovery from illness.

But he is not all work.

Pitlor enjoys travel, and plans a future European vacation to visit areas of the continent he did not see while there during World War II. Ih general, he said he and his wife. Rose, have a lot of things planned. • Pitlor has advice for those just beginning their careers. "It's a case of setting your mind to what you pursue," he said.

Enjoyment of whatever a person does is very important, he added.

Pitlor's philosophy: "Anyone that sets his mind to doing someithing can be a success."

MaimonJdes on stamps This past year has seen nine post offices from around the world release special postage stamps and souvenir sheets to commemorate the 850th birth anniversary of the famous Jewish philosopher and physician — Maimonides (11351204.)

Maimonides, y^ose real name was Rabbi Moses ben Maimon (or the Rambam), was born in Cordoba, an important city in southern Spain on the day before the Jewish festival of Passover in the year 1135.

Throughout the world, his reputation as an outstanding religious leader, physician, philosopher and scholar is now recognized. He is best known as the author of "Guide for the Perplexed," a major work not just in Jewish writing but, in world literature and religion; influencing the philosophy of Judaism, Islam and Christianity.

The book reconciles reason with faith, giving rational interpretations to numerous biblical concepts.

Because of his immense contributions to Jewish theological philosophy, it was said of the Rambam shortly after his death: "From Moses (the Law giver) to Moses (Maimonides, the Law interpreter,) there has arose none like Moses (Maimonides.)"

Post Offices in South America, Africa and the Caribbean have all participated in the recent philatelic salute in honor of the 850th birth anniversary of Maimonides.

The first to issue a series of stamps for the Rambam was Antigua & Barbuda, a former British colony in the Leeward chain of the West Indies. The Caribbean nation issued a $2 stamp and $5 souvenir sheet featuring Maimonides' portrait on June 17, 1985.

The Republic of Guinea, a former French colony in West Africa released an interesting 7 Syli souvenir sheet. They pictured Maimonides when a young man of 13, being forced to flee with the other Jews of Coidoba in the aftermath of the

town's conquest by a band of fanatical Moslems.

In the foreground of the stamp is another portrait of the famed Jewish philosopher as he appeared in later life. At the bottom of the souvenir sheet is an illustration of a rabbi reading from a Torah scroll to a group of young Jewish orphans in the State of Israel today.

The artwork on the Guinea souvenir sheet would appear to serve as an effective contrast by showing the enduring strength of the Jewish faith over the centuries despite the outbreak of major persecutions against the Jews in vaiious Gentile dominated lands.

Five other nations — Dominica, Grenada, the Grenada Grenadines, Lesotho and Sierra Leone — have issued single stamps bearing a portrait of the Rambam and highlighting his important contributions in the field of medicine.

Two more recent countries to honor the legacy of Maimonides on the occasion of his 850th birth anniversary are the South American republics of Paraguay and Bolivia.

Both issued special souvenir sheets in rather limited editions of just 5,000 copies.

In an attempt to satisfy the strong interest of both stamp and Judaica collectors, the Atlas Stamp Company, 48 West' 48th Street, New York, N.Y. 10036 has designed a special stamp album to house the new Maimonides stamp issues.

In addition to the above mentioned sets released this past year, the stamp album also includes spaces for earlier stamps and souvenir sheets issued in honor of the Rambam by Israel (1953,) Spain (1967) and Grenada (1971.)

A complete Maimonides coll^ction with every postage stamp or souvenir sheet ever issued in honor of Maimonides retails for $69.50.

The collection without the scarce Bolivia and Paraguay souvenir sheets retails for $42.50. One can purchase the stamp album alone for $10.

By Albert MuUer Deiter and Lore (pronounced 'Laura') Naahelsky are retired now but they are still living in the small town of Mitchell, Nebraska, population, 1842,12 miles from the Wyoming border.

The disintegration of German society in the 1930s initiated the emigration of Deiter's family to America. They had lived in a small town in Germany, Gutenburg, near Kassell, when in 1933, Deiter's father was beaten up by the Nazis.

The family decision made, they managed to leave in 1934 shortly after Deiter's Bar Mitzvah. Iliey settled in the town of Woodward, Oklahoma, population 8710, where Deiter's parents found work in a relative's store, a vocation that they had had in Germany.

In 1938, Deiter's parents were able to purchase a store in Fowler, Colorado, population, 1214, which is still owned and managed by Deiter's sister and her husband. Deiter moved to San Francisco in 1942, making a living as a salesman. He met and married Lore in 1945 and five years later they had saved the $6,000 needed to purchase the general store in Mitchell.

Deiter's popularity if anything has increaaed, since now thati^he's retired he's been asked to run for public office. That indeed is a compliment from his neighbors. So far, Deiter has politely turned them down, he still prefers his unaccustomed freedom. His stamp and coin collections and his antiques await his attention.

While helping her husband at the store. Lore rais|d their two children, David and dan. After high school graduation, David went to San Jose State in California, while Jan went to th^ University of Nebraska at Lincoln.

After the children left, Lore decided to get her degree also. She weot to Chadron State College and got a BA in gerontology. Class of 78, and even took some courses toward her master's degree. In addition to being the store bookkeeper, Lonre assumed the unpaid 'position' of buyer when they went to their twice a year trips to the cities of Houston, Atlanta, and New Orleans. There were also side trips to Denver and Cheyenne which compensated for the chores of merchandising during the rest of the year. Lore has been a member for Hadassah for a long time. Nowadays; she keeps busy doing volunteer work for VITA — Volunteer Income Tax Assistance in the community.

Lore insists that she cannot remember any occasion involving anti-Semitism in western Nebraska during the past 30 years, except for . the 1985 incident concerning a local meat packer. If anything, that attack in the local newspaper caused the isolated Jewish residents of the Panhandle to come together, organize, and tun^ for help from the urban center of Nebraskan Jewish Ufe. They asked for assistance from the Omaha chapter of the Anti-Defamation League.

The matter has quietly simmered down, but greater awareness by the local Ministerial Association has been generated. The acknowledgement that bigotry affects Christians as well as Jews has been heartening.

"More important", Deiter says, "is the fact that we got togtther again."

Lore was also born in Germany, Himbach, near Biiedingen. She left the country with her parents in 1940 arriving in America in the same year after escaping via the Siberian railroad from Berlin to Moscow to Kobe, Japan, and by ship to Seattle, Washington. Lore retains her slender figure and typical blond hair, while her German accent is hardly noticeable.

After 34 years, they sold the establishment in Mitchell in 1985 and retired. Deiter was 65, Lore a little younger. They both are quick to state that they simply wouldn't be able to manage in a.large city. Lore remembers Mrs. Sammy Cohen being the teacher for approximately eight years. Lore and Deiter's son, David, and other boys and girls were helped with their bar and bat mitzvah ceremonies. David also got help from the rabbi in Cheyenne via mailed tape recordings. The group also met for community dinners at festival times for which a local hall was rented. Lore recalls that the number of mixed couples was very small compared to the present time and perhaps that fact made their voluntary organization easier in the 1950s and 19608 than nowadays.

Jewish food regulations are obviously a central part of home life which in turn plays a significant role in maintaining identity. Lore remembers that working all day, sometimes to 9 o'clock at night, made daily cooking, two sets of dishes, and the other aspects of keeping kosher too difficult, Due to distances between the rural area and the closest urban center — Cheyenne — obtaining kosher meat was an impracticality. Even acquiring Passover matzos required special airrangements, however. Lore recalls that efforts were always made.

But the symbiotic relationship of the family with its Jewish food store could not be created nor maintained when a one way 120 mile delivery route was involved.

Jewish religious traditions grew when and where close proximity between people and institutions was taken for granted. Distances are a crucial consideration when the synagogue is not within walking dis-

tance. For Deiter, Cheyenne was very nearly beyond reasonable driving distance.

In retrospect, Deiter thinks a number of related factors contributed to a loss of Jewish participation. First, his neighbors, the clientele of the store, demanded service on Saturday. In fact, with the farmers in town, it usually was the busiest day of the week. The daily secular life of the community and the requirements of making a living demanded all one's time.

Second, without constant reinforcement through practice reading, the Hebrew characters in the pri^r book become hazy, and at Ust only the timeless phrases were able to be recognized. Publishers of the pri^r books seem to have imderstood the problem by translating Hebrew not only into English but even providing certain important sections in transliterated Hebrew.

Third, and even more important, however, was the fact that distance interfered with the gathering of a minyan. Only on special days was it possible to meet to recite Kaddish for loved ones.

Deiter remembers that as long as the Hiram Scott College in Scottsbluff was in operation, from about 1966 to 1971, there were enough Jewish students from the eastern United States who were interested in conducting Friday evening services. The Jewish residents of the surrounding communities greatly appreciated the assistance of the enthusiastic young men. Closing the college ended the services.

Both Deiter and Lore feel that another means to help remind isolated rural residents of their Jewish heritage should be emphasized. Deiter's long time subscription to the Denver Jewish newspaper, has made him feel a part of that community.

It is strange, he thinks, that in an electronic age, an old fashioned means of communication, the special weekly newspaper, could reach and help unite a scattered group of people besieged by evangelical ministrations. Perhi^ Israel could be better served if the American Jewish urban community tried harder to retain its dispersed rural Jewish constituents.

The primary statistic is, 'What are you doing?'" said Omaha attorney Milton Abrahams.

Abrahams, SO, explained that when people do things they fmd energizing and rewarding, those activities are likely to be continued with even greater commitment as time passes.

From Abrahams' point of view, satisfaction is mostly in the performance of enjoyed activities.

In an interview at his law office, Abrahams talked about his philosophy of life.

He compared life to a golf game. "You don't worry about the score on the last green," he said.

"You think about, 'Well, what can I do on the next one?'"

Abrahams practices what he preaches.

Through a combination of community activities and his work in the law, Abrahams' days are full.

A trial lawyer for 20 years, Abrahams now prefers to practice corporate law.

Why does he continue the daily practice of law after so many years?

"If there is inactivity or disuse, you have atrojjhy,'' said Abrahams, noting that atrophy can affect the body, the spirit, or both.

Though he said he does not have a specific physical fitness program, Abrahams did say he uses a stationary bicycle and does sit-ups on a daily basis.

Through exercise, he helps himself to ward off physical deterioration, but it is another sort of work which helps him maintain mental sharpness: his work with community organizations.

For about two hours out of every day, he involves himself in various community projects.

The list of groups with which he has worked over the years is long but has included the Jewish Federation of Omaha, Temple Israel, the Omaha Public Library, the Nebraska Bar Association and Legal Aid Society, the Omaha Etoard of Education, the Omaha Urban League and the United Way. Currently,.Abrahams is most involved with the United Way and the Omaha Public Library.

He said that in many cases, people requested his participation in a particular organization.

Often, Abrahams admitted that he was a "pushover" for such work.

"I think that all of us have' some sense to improve the world as we found it," he said.

Community work can take up quite a bit of time. Yet, Abrahams believes that once he takes a community responsibility upon himselif, it must be discharged responsibly. He accommodates his time to the demaild.

Because Abrahams cannot serve every organization, he does what he can to choose those in which he has an interest.

For example, Abrahams said his love of books led him to work with the Omaha Public Library.

One of Abrahams' beliefs is that people have two choices in life. They may either avoid challenges and fail, or they can welcome.them and Milton Abrahams succeed.

Making her dreams come true Editor's note: For the past 11 yean, managing editor Judith Marburg has worked closely with Mary Fellman in and out of the Jewish Press office. The Passover theme gave Mrs. Marburg the opportunity to write from the vantage point of ^rst-hand experience.

Mary Fellman is a doer. And, Mary Fellman is a dreamer. This combination has produced wonderful results for the Jewish community of Omaha. First Mary dreams, and then she does.

But Mary does not limit herself to the His? torical Society.

In 1978, in the wake of the Beth Din, Mary was instrumental in the establishment of a Vaad Hakashrut. The Vaad works with businesses, the Federation and its agencies in supervising kashruth in the community. The rationale for the establishment of the Vaad, according to Mary, was "because It is important for the Jewish community to make kashruth available for those who want to maintain it.

"It is a community responsibility to make it possible for the most religious Jew in the world to go to the JCC and have a kosher meal."

Recognizing the great value of an extended family/community support system, Mary has worked with Rabbi Paul Drazen and the Beth El Synagogue membership to "help others have a support system" through the Mispacha Committee.

In the context of "community as family" the Misfapacha serves monthly Shabbat dinners.

"This enables young families, older people who are alone, et cetera, to make Shabbat in a joyful family atmosphere."

In addition, the Mishpacha has invited Beth El members to monthly get-acquainted luncheons with Rabbi Drazen; sends flowers to residents of the Rose Blumkin Home and other residences for the elderly; sends notes to people who have been hospitalized, offering help; arranges transportation to synagogue for those who need it; and more.

The Mishpacha is not a social service agency, Mary is quick to point out. It is "family reaching out to family" trying to fill needs.

And Mary is far from finished. She is as busy with her community involvements now as she was as a young woman, as a young housewife and mother, and as ia businesswoman. She is still dreaming — and doing.

Mary dreams of a day when the Nebraska Jewish Historical Society will have a building of its own. In that building she sees a replica of the interior of the recently closed Kapulier Shul, the artifacts from which are presently being stored

by I-Go-Van. She also dreams of books for children and adults, slides and video presentations, research.

There is no doubt that some day all of these things will come to fruition. Because when Mary Fellman dreams, things happen.

Maxwell House celebrates Passover This Passover, Jews all over America will continue a tradition that began 50 years ago.

They'll be asking the Four Questions with the help of an old and welcome friend: the Maxwell House Coffee Haggadah.

Maxwell House will mark this 50-year milestone by making 800,000 Haggadahs available in grocery outlets throughout the, nation. Even more impressive, notes Richard Jacobs, presi

dent of the Joseph Jacobs Organization, the company which originally conceived of the program, a grand total of 20,000,000 Haggadahs has been made available free of charge during the past 50 years.

"There is hardly a Jewish family in America that has not read from the Maxwell House Haggadah," says Mr. Jacobs. "In fact, many Jews have come to associate Maxwell House aa the Passover coffee because of the company's participation in the holiday celebration via publishing and distributing the Haggadah."

Richard Jacobs points out that it all began 60 years ago when his father, the late Joseph Jacobs, persuaded Maxwell House to obtain Passover certification, setting it apart from other

coffee brands. Maxwell House was then heavily sold and merchandised through grocery outlets in Jewish neighborhoods of New York and supported by special advertising in Jewish newspapers. Today, Maxwell House continues to advertise heavily in Jewish media and sponsors such events as an Israel Sweepstakes.

Years after the first Haggadah was ever distributed, the relationship between Maxwell House and the Jewish community is as strong as ever. Mr. Jacobs believes the latest advertisement produced by Maxwell House for the Jewish market sums up the feeling between the coffee maker and the Jewish community. The ad reads: "Maxwell House has been at so many seders, we feel like part of the family."

Celebrity status offers new challenges for Omaha's Mrs. B

By Morris Maline On July 4, Main Streets across America will come alive to celebrate Independence Day and the sounds of drums and bugles will echo across the land.

This is the day of parades, and each community will take pride in its marchers and especially the grand marshal â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the outstanding citizen who leads the festivities.

In nearby Seward, Nebraska, the town has selected a national celebrity from Omaha as its grand marshal. The celebrity is none other than Rose Blumkin of Nebraska Furniture fame.

At a time of life when most think in terms of retirement (she is over 90), Mrs. B has foUnd herself immersed in a new and challenging environment.

She is a celebrity.

Her story of how to succeed in business by really trying which includes her unique brand of common sense arid fair play is now prime copy for national newspapers, magazines, and television studios., Offers for books and motion pictures are not too far off, as are growing invitations to receive honorary degrees at prestigious universities.

Today Show spot still brings mail A recent spot on the Today Show still produces daily mail including many requests for financial aid. Naturally, the fact that she started witK nothing and ended up a multi-millionaire is part of her story.

Because of her celebrity status, one might think that Mrs. B. is so busy that she can't be reached easily. Nothing is further from the truth.

My interview was scheduled for 9 a.m. in the carpet department of the Nebraska Furniture Mart. I arrived at 8:45 hoping to photograph her upon her arrival at work. She was there already, footing up and down the wide aisles on her bat'iery operated vehicle.

I waved, and she drove to me stopping six inches' from my right toe.

"What can I do for you," she asked?

"Well, Mrs. B, we're doing a series of articles about how life, begins at 65 and I'd like to find out what you do with your timfe."

That was the beginning of our 30 minufe con-, versation, a question and answer session that ranged from what she eats to her philosophy of work.

"I don't drink, smoke or play cards" "I don't drink, play cards or smoke, I work seven days a week and never take a vacation."

She added that many women she knows could benefit by learning to work, keeping busy, doing less gossiping and drinking less coffee.

Her daily regimen includes a light breakfast, a salad for lunch and a baked potato and cottage cheese or something for dinner.

"I only know business, I never had a girl friend, I stick to my family and business."

She derives much love and affection from her children referring.to son, Louis as "one in a million" and to her daughters as "my diamonds and jewels."

'.'My daughters are my diamonds and jewels" She said she is proud of the fact that Louis comes over every Sunday and still talks over business with her.

"I've received nothing but pleasure from my children, I'm the luckiest mother in the world ... I treated my own mother like a queen and my children treat me the same v/ey."

Mrs. B said she also has been fortunate in inheriting her mother's good health having only a knee operation and cataracts to worry about over the years.

And she inherited her father's good brain, she

added, explaining that she shuns a calculator and does her mathematical computations in her head.

"What do I need a cubby hole for?"

"Where's your office, I asked?"

"What do I need a cubby hole for, this is my office as she gestured to include the entire c&rpet department."

In the carpet department, she treats her "wonderful customers" as she would like to be treated.

"I like hard-working, middle-class people, I give them the best deal because I want to help their family life... I sell cheap and I always tell the truth."

"I never had an education, I believe in common sense."

Mrs. B pointed out that she struggled to make a living in her early years and that to this day she remembers all the people who helped her succeed.

"Those who didn't help, I don't forget either ... My son, Louis forgives them, I don't."

She added, "I don't believe in being too polite; for good people, I'll do anything, double-cross me and I'm through with them."

According to Mrs. B, the way to make money in business is not to turn down good deals.

"If you think you can make a profit on a deal and you don't have the money to get involved, go get partners."

One in a millk)n My half-hour conversation with Mrs. B drew to a close as employees and vendors sought \to capture her attention.

Away I went with a final thought: Many Jews left the pogroms of Russia for freedom and opportunity in the United States. I wonder how many of them lead July i parades.

Heitert Goldsten:

He plans to help his Jewish community

By Morris Maline Herbert Goldsten is known throughout Omaha as a real estate magnate who goes on year after year demonstrating a remarkable ability in managing his business affairs.

What the Jewish community does not realize — until today at least — is that Mr. Goldsten is plahning a major philanthropic gift.

The legal mechanism for establishing the gift is in process and will take the form of a trust designed to benefit the Jewish community.

The Federation Foundation told the Jewish Press that Mr. Goldsten's wiU provides that a "substantial" portion of his assets will go into the trust.

"This will be the largest single gift ever given for the exclusive benefit of the Omaha Jewish community," is the way the trust was described.

On one of his frequent visits to the Jewish Press office, Mr. Goldsten described his plan for the functioning of the trust.

He said that income from the trust may be used for 25 years to help support Jewish religious, charitable and educational organizations in the Omaha metropolitan area.

After 25 years, the trustees may use the capital in the trust as well.

According to Mr. Goldsten, Howard Kaslow. immediate past president of the Jewish Federation of Omaha, drafted the documents, and the trustees along with Mr. Goldsten are as follows: Arthur H. Goldstein, Joseph Kirshenbaum, Arthur P. Grossman, Yale Richards, Howard J. Kaslow and Thomas N. Moore. Mr. Moore is affiliated with the Trust Department at Omaha National Bank.

Mr. Goldsten was born in Omaha, the son of Harris and Sarah Goldsten. He prefers to keep his date of birth to himself.

He is one of six children: brother David and sisters Anna Ruth and Rose are deceased. Sisters Frances and Eva reside in Florida.

Mr. Goldsten's bequest to the Jewish community will follow a major $100,000 gift to the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home for the aged. The synagogue in the Home was named in memory of his parents. Earlier, he had donated $100,000 to Beth Israel Synagogue.

More recently, he donated $5,000 to the Nebraska Jewish Historical Society to einable that group to provide the community with a historical exhibit, "Jewish Landmarks, Omaha, Lincoln, Council Bluffs".

"One of my earliest gifts was $500 to the old Jewish Community Center when I was a young man."

Mr. Goldsten said that his first real job in Omaha was working for Brandeis.

"They paid me $10 a week, I asked for a $2.50 raise, they said no, so I quit and went to work for my parents in their general store."

The next major item of history recalled by Mr. Goldsten had to do with his being a baseball player.

"I played right field and tftird base and in 1910 was given a medal. The sponsor of the team was Omaha Public Market."

Although Mr. Goldsten admits to being a "pretty good" player, he said he didn't come up to the ability displayed by former teammate Johnny Rosenblatt. i Mr. Goldsten, who never married, also had a reputation in the community as being quite a good dancer.

He even recalls doing some dancing at the Fort Worth, Texas, Jewish Community Center during .

World War I. He went into the Army in 1917 weighing 118 pounds and was assigned to the infantry. Two months later he was transferred to the medical department and just as the war ended he was supervising scores of lower-ranking soldiers in a clothing warehouse.

He was a sergeant at the time having been promoted directly from private. He also was recommended to go to officer candidate school, but the end of the war brought an end to his military career.

Wolf Bros, store at 16th and Farnam employed him directly after his separation from service.

"We had beautiful silk shirts there and I remember how quickly they sold."

Then it was back into the real estate business full time. Meanwhile, three of his sisters went to live in New York.

"My parents wouldn't let theni stay on their own, so they went too. My brother also went so I was alone."

Mr. Goldsten was in real estate his entire adult like making him one of the oldest real estate agents in Nebraska. His broker's number is 173.

His longevity also shows up in a number of other areas: as a member of B'nai B'rith for 68 years, and as life member of the Jewish War Veterans, the American Legion and the Nebraska Jewish Historical Society.

When his brother returned to Omaha, he joined Herbert in Goldsten Bros, and they pursued investments in real estate. Many of the properties they built or bought are along Leavenworth street in the 3100 block.

Mr. Goldsten recalled his first sale — a prop-

erty on Howard Street which turned a $500 profit — "all profit because there was no income tax in those days."

Today, Mr. Goldsten remains active in his real estate business, still keeping his own books and making out his leases.

He maintains kashruth in his apartment and belongs to both Beth Israel and Beth El Synagogues.

On Mondays, he generally attends the luncheons put on by the older adult group at the Jewish Community Center.

And many times, he will stop off at the Jewish Press office for some conversation.

And kidding!

"Are you the Herb in the Burger King commercial," I would ask.

After the fun, however, came the story about his thoughts for the future of the Jewish community, and his plans for the Herbert Goldsten Trust.

Editor's note: Now that the news is out, I fully expect my Monday morning visitor to come into the Press office and say, "What did you do such a big story for?"

' So how do you like this issue so far? Are you finding stories about people you've known for years? I suppose how you relate to the entire subject would depend on how old you are.

I expect our mature citizens to find more interest in the subject matter than, say, a 30 year old; on the other hand, if you're only 30, you should be excited to see what lies ahead of you, provided you're smart enough to know age is Mind-Over-Matter. Translation? If you don't mind, it doesn't matter!

That was a line Jack Benny often used ... I find it so truthful I often quote him. Because age really doesn't matter, does it? Havent we all known very young people who exhibited none of the usual traits of their age? Conversely, I count among my dearest friends folks over 70 who have been actively engaged in every possible project, program and activity for years and who slill are.

Maybe some of that old "use it or lose it" term has more validity than realized. If the mind'and imagination are kept busy, as well as the arms and legs, they stay in better working condition.

I think the doctors agree that when somebody stays home day after day, doing nothing very stimulating, the entire boidy slows down.

On the other hand, the person, no matter what age, who gets up in the morning with some place to go and something to do, stays in better shape, mentally and physically. That certainly is proven true by the stories of the folks interviewed for

this special edition of the Jewish Press. We have concentrated on the small number only because it would be impossible to print a paper large enough to include each of the people who deserve to be recognized.

It would take an issue like the Sunday New York Times to list all the folk who are over 65 and who live a busy, useful, contented existence.

They are all around us ... we are blessed in this community to be able to say that. And those alwut whom we speak are also blessed. Over and over I heard the words "I'm so grateful to still H able to do something for somebody else."

I know how important that is â&#x20AC;&#x201D; to still be al^le to do something for somebody else. How terrible it would be to suddenly feel nobody needs you. Nobody depends on you. Nobody counts on you.

This is not to say a person shouldn't have the fipe time earned after a lifetime of hard work.

There ought to be time to do what there never was time to do, certainly. But here is a good place for moderation, isn't it? Retirement should probably be taken in moderate doses! Enough to enjoy, but not 80 much as to become a bore.

I I'm all for taking trips, having hobbies, playing atiy favorite game, but a person can get too much of that. It's kind of like cheesecake â&#x20AC;&#x201D; it's delicious but how much can you eat before you've had too much!

That appears to be the nice thing about so

many of our local active retirees. They must have figured out how much play time they need and then balanced it with the right amount of useful chores. Person for person, they are a well rounded group. And we in this community should be recognized for having brains enough to use our excellent resources... to take advantage of experience and know-how.

Wfe're smarter than the huge corporations who seem to believe that reaching a birthday autoinatically causes the brain to shut down. We know there are people who have so much expertise in whatever line of work they spent a lifetime doing, it would be a sin to ignore them.

To be able to spend one day or two or how many ever a person chooses, doing something downright inspirational for somebody else must be the ultimate mitzvah. I take off my hat to all of you terrific people. I don't know when I'll reach the alleged retirement age. In fact, I hope I never know.

I'll try to learn by example ... by the pattern I see right here, before my eyes. I hope I'm smart enough to remember all I've learned from so many of you. And I hope you'll all go on, for many, many years to come, teaching the rest of us how to behave in our senior years. How to be productive members of society. Yes, productive, rather than stagnant. So thanks for the lessons, to all of you. We'll try to emulate you.

By Dr. Murray Frost Moses Montefiore traveled to Jerusalem in 1856 — when he was 71 years old — to establish the first community of Jews in the city outside of the walled Old City He visited the Holy Land twice more (in 1866 and 1875 — at the ages of 82 and 91) to establish and check on projects there. He also traveled to Morocco in 1863 (at age 79), Romania in 1867 (83), and Russia in 1873 (89) — all on behalf of persecuted Jewish communities. He served as president of the British Board of Jewish Deputies from 1835 to 1874 — i.e. until he was 90. He lived to the age of 101.

He is depicted on an Israel stamp issued in 1981.

Montefiore is one of many Jews who continued to make major contributions to society long after they became 65, and who subsequently were honored on postage stamps.

Marc Chagall is another example. He was born in 1887 and so he turned 65 in 1952. But his stained glass window at the United Nations was completed in 1965 (it appears on a U.N. set of stamps issued in 1967) and his set of windows

was honored with a stamp for the work he began after his liberation at age 65. Eduard Meijers began his revision of the Dutch civil code after he returned to the Netherlands (which depicted him on a stamp in 1970).

Chaim Weizmann was 74 years old when Israel gained its independence in 1948 and he served as its first President until his death in 1952. He appears on Israel stamps issued in 1952, 1967, and 1978.

His successor was Yitzhak Ben Zvi who became President when he was §7 and served until his death at age 79 (he is on a 1964 stamp). His successor, Zalman Shazar, took office at age 74 and served for 10 years (he is on stamps issued

by Brazil and Uruguay in 1966 when he visited those countries at age 77 and he is on a 1975 Israel stamp).

The much more demanding office of Prime Minister was often held by persons over 65 years old. David Ben Gurion, who was born in October 1886, began his second term as. Prime Minister in 1955 (age 69) and served until 1963 (he is on Israel stamps issued in 1974 and 1978). His successor, Levi Eshkol, assumed office at age 68 (he can be seen on a 1970 stamp), and he was followed by Golda Meir who was 71 and who served until she was 76 (she appears on a 1981 issue from Israel and a 1979 stamp from St. Lucia).

Another influential female leader was Henrietta Szold. She did not move to Palestine until she was 64 years old. Then she served as the head of the departments of health and education in the Palestine Zionist Council between the ages of 67 and 70; she organized the Youth Aliyah movement which saved thousands of children from the Nazis when she was 74. She appears on a 1960 Israel stamp.

Even if you will never be famous enough to be on a postage stamp, philately can be an ideal hobby for "senior citizens" and young alike, fbr persons who lead active lives or those who prefer passive activities. It can be a retreat from the pressures of daily life, or it can be an outlet for your creative energies.

It can be a source of beauty, whether the subject depicted is a photographic reproduction of nature (Israel's latest stamps depict Red Sea corals) or an artist's work (Israel's latest issue also includes Picasso's portraits of Arthur Rubinstein — who was bom in 1887 and lived until 1982).

Let stamp collecting be your stimulus to learn about our heritage —- from Sarah, who gave birth when she was ovei' 90, to the latest heroes (astronaut Judith Resnik's name appears on a cancellation used in her home town of Akron, and will surely appear soon on postage stamps).

Some volunteer work...

By Bert Lewis In May of 1974, the Jewish Press carried a story of Toby Kagan's retirement from her Beth El Synagogue position. It told of her 22 years as Executive Secretary and her duties were listed as those of "everything from Secretary, Director, hostess, complaint department, counsellor, budget director, bar mitzvah consultant and schedule planner to bulletin editor."

She was quoted as having said "I plan to devote my time to my family and some volunteer work." That last might possibly be the understatement of the year 1974.

She says now she had every intention of just "being free to do nothing or something â&#x20AC;&#x201D; whatever I felt like." As a matter of fact, that's not the way it worked out.

The first step into the lady-of-leisure department somehow led her to five years of work at the Clarkson Hospital Gift Shop. She enjoyed it, but did not find it particularly fuIHUing. As a iesult, when she was approached by Mary Fellman and Evelyn Alperin to start "some sort of an outreach program" at Beth El, she was more than interested.

"I believe it must have been about 1976 when we formed the Walk-In Drop-In Project,||i8 an offshoot of MoUie's Older Adult program" Toby explained. She described her efforts in contacting people and making them aware of the proposed activities, stressing that "because of the location of Beth El, we soon had plenty of action.

So many of our older citizens lived nearby they could truly walk in, and the bus stopped so close for those who didn't, we Were off to a program that remains a favorite with all who participate."

If you don't believe it, visit the synagogue some Thursday and observe the gathering- They visit, they play cards, they take an interest in each other, they eat a delicious lunch prepared right there in the kitchen, and they enjoy some form of scheduled entertainment, So that was the beginning. From that springboard, it was perfectly natural to select Toby Kagan as a member of the newly formed Bureau For the Aging in 1979. She had already established herself as a knowledgeable, caring and interested in the older segment of the Omaha Jewish population.

Her title, I believe, was Program Chairman, which she still carries; she is also knovyn more formally at this time as Chairman of Conimunity Services. As such, she operates as an advisor to Mollie Delman, the combination Staff DirectorMother Hen of the Older Adult Programs.

Specifically, Toby wears many hats, and is busy with many different parts of the entire program. She helps with menu planning and enjoys much of the one-on-one contact with the people who also come to the Monday and 'I\iesday activities. She helps solve problems and when somebody is needed to express a tactful suggestion, Toby is called. When special events or special holidays mean additional meetings, Toby is there, usually with her husband George in tow.

Everybody knows George, who will pitch in without being asked for help.

The name Toby Kagan is so otten mentioned in connection with the Older Adult programs, people might think she's a paid staff member.

No, this is just some of the volunteer work she thought she might do after retirement.

Toby has maintained a valuable position on the Bureau for the Aging and presently serves as secretary. She heads the Food Committee and 18 accustomed to answering questions from the community at large or from the relatives of a Blumkin Home resident. Or for that matter, from residents themselves. She always has time for anybody who needs "her ear." And a soft answei', too, given after thoughtful consideration.

When I asked her what else she has been involved with, I heard a long list, hesitantly spoken. "Well, I guess I've belonged to Hadassah since I got married in 1940. I'm a lifetime member. And of coui-se National Council of Jewish

Women for many years. And also, I was active in the reorganization of our Beth El Sisterhood and ssrved as president in about 1980."

She also mentions being "an honorary member of the Beth El Board, and s member of the Ritual Committee for probably close to 10 years." She adds, "I've always maintained an involvement with the synagogue." She has also served on the Jewish Community Center Board and the Federation Boafd. "And I've probably worked on Campaign every year since 1941."

Almost as an afterthought, Toby s^ys, "Way back, shortly after I retired, for a while I was a volunteer aide for reading at Dundee School. I loved it, it was so wonderful working with the children ... so rewarding."

If you know Toby very well, you are aware of an expression she often uses in conversation. She never says "I want to tell you something" ...

She says "I want to share something with you;" that is the essence of this lady. She automatically shares. Her time, her energy, her judgment, her shoulder. More than once I've heard Mollie Delman refer to her as "the Class of this entire operation." Very well put.

That's Toby Kagan. A lady. Wife to George, Mother to (Dr.) Jim, Grandmother to three beautiful girls, and a special asset to the Jewish community of Omaha.

Jacob Marcus Dr. Jacob Rader Marcus, the Distinguished Service Professor and occupant of the Milton and Hattie Kutz Chair of American Jewish History at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion, was 90 years old on Mar. 5. Dr. Marcus is also the founder and Director of the Amer-" ican Jewish Archives and co-director of the American Jewish Periodical Center. Both are housed on the Cincinnati campus.

Dr. Marcus was born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania. In 1911, at the age of 15, Jacob Marcus began his studies at Hebrew Union College. He earned a bachelor's degree at the University of Cincinnati and "Smichah," rabbinic ordination, at HUC. He served overseas in World War I and then studied at Lane Theological Seminary and

the University of Chicago. From 1922 through 1925, he attended academies in Europe and received his Doctorate from thp University of Berlin. He cqntinued his graduate work in Paris and Jerusalem. He has received honorary LLD degrees from the University of Cincinnati, Xavier University, and Dropsie College in Philadelphia and DHL degrees from Spertus College of Judaica, Brandeis University, and Gratz College, A Bicentennial Festschrift for Jacob Rader Marcus, edited by Bertram Wallace Korn, was published in honor of Dr. Marcus' 80 birthday. In 1979, the American Jewish Archives published The Writings of Jacob Rader Marcus; A Bibliographic Record. It includes a Forward by Dr. Alfred Gottschalk, president.

Jacob Marcus and was compiled by Dr. Herbert Zafren, director of libraries, and Dr. Abraham J. Peck, administrative director of the American Jewish Archives.

The volume extends from 1917 until 1978 and is as lengthy as one of Dr. Marcus' books. He has authored over a dozen books about European and American Jewish history. Some of his works include: The Colonial American Jew, a three volume history. The Rise and Destiny of The German Jev^, and the more recent two volume history: The American Jewish Woman.

Dr. Marcus is a past president and the honorary president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis. He is a past president and an honorary president of the American Jewish His-

torical Society. In 1961, the Society presented Dr. Marcus with the Lee M. Friedman Medal for his distinguished service in the field of American Jewish history. He is a former Trustee and Vice President of the Jewish Publication Society of America and was Chairman of its subcommittee on American Jewish history. In 1955, he received the Frank L. Weil Award from the National Jewish Welfare Board for his contribution to American Jewish culture.

The Associates of the College-Institute, Cincinnati chapter, designated Dr. Marcus as their first honoree at a Tribute dinner in 1983. In the program, Dr. Alfred Gottschalk noted: "Jacob Rader Marcus brings to his literary worktable the farsighted perspective of one who is deeply

schooled not only in the methodology of historical research but also in the classic disciplines of Judaism which have helped to shape him as rabbi and humanist."

In his ninetieth year. Dr. Marcus continues to lecture throughout the United States, to teach and to complete a four volume history of American Jews from 1776 to the present, even,though he claims that "I'm not a boychick anymore."

Dr. Marcus has witnessed and recorded events that have occurred for most of the century both in the Jewish and the general culture. Having spent most of his life in Cincinnati, this world renowned historian traces the past of the Queen City with a professorial eye and the added dimensions of his personal anecdotes.

A perfect mistake

By Deborah Cohen A solitary tear slid gently down my ashen cheek. That tear carried all the pain and sorrow that burned in my heart. Like a dam breaking loose, a flood of those crystal drops cascaded from my blue eyes, trying to wash away the aching feeling. I quickly whisked away the tears which had blurred nly vision. When the mist had cleared, I lovingly picked up an unfinished piece of knitting and tenderly caressed it. A beautiful cable stitch spiraled down a snow-white panel, while on either side, soft blue panels like lacy snowflakes clung gently. To my eyes, it was perfect, the most beautifiil piece of artwork in the world.

"She never finished it," I had whispered, '^he never got to finish it." With that, the tears welled up once more, but somehow I managed to quickly squeeze them back. I had to pull myself together and act my age â&#x20AC;&#x201D; 17 wonderful, yet sorrowful years.

I fmally composed myself and pulled the miniature afghan towards my tear-stained cheek.

After several moments of tranquility, I began to examine each stitch: knit, purl, knit, purl, purl.

Purl? My heart sank. I had found a mistake in the knitting and after further probing, found several more. I was furious about the incorrect stitch.

"A mistake? Nanny never made mistakes in her work. She practically taught the entire city to knit, needlepoint, and crochet. I can't believe it!" I yelled. Just to prove to myself about my grandmother's artistic abilities, I jumped off my bed and headed towards my clothes-jammed closet. After sliding some hangers this way and that I came across a white evening sweater with

silver thread running through it. The collar, fluffy and white, was knitted from angora. It was beautiful. I had slipped it on over my Harvard sweatshirt and modeled in front of the mirror.

Gorgeous, 1 thought, as I carefully peeled it from my fleece jersey.

"It's perfect, just as I thought. Not a mistake anywhere. Look out Liz Claiborne: you've got competi..." Just then 1 stopped. Liz Claiborne wouldn't have to worry. No more sweaters like this would ever be made. I hung up the elegant wrap.

"Nanny, why did you have to die? It's so unfair! I need you. Mom needs you, David needs you! Why did you have to die?" I angrily grabbed the afghan, trying to vent tny frustration. Everything had changed in the Cohen household since Nanny died. Mom and Dad got divorced. Dave went to college. Poppy remarried I chuckled even I'd changed I finally needed a bra. The bra' business had been a private joke between my grandmother and me.

I settled down on my bed and closed my eyes.

The afghan was nuzzled between my cheek and shoulder like a child's security blanket. But it wasn't a security blanket; rather, it was a key to unlocking the numerous memories, both good and bad, of my grandmother. Soon these memories became crystal clear in my mind as I almost relived certain incidents in my life. ^ I could see myself at the age of five, eagerly running into Nanny's loving arms.

"How's my little dolly?" Nanny said as she nearly squeezed all the air out of me.

"Fine, Nanny," I said after catching my breath and squeezmg back just as tight. That was one thing I could never forget: Nanny always hugged

me too tightly. Th6n the scene faded, only to be followed by another.

"I've been baking all day just for your visit, Debbie," Nanny said, puffing away at a cigarette.

The house smelled, except for the smell of smoke, marvelous, I remembeiied. "Cinnamon cookies, chocolate-chip cookies, teglach ..." Teglach.

Mmmm. The honey-coated dough balls were the best, and no one could make them Uke Nanny.

I was eight years old and once again visiting my granc^parents. "What do you want for lunch, kids?" Nanny called to David and me.

"Peanut butter," cried David racing into the kitchen. "The crunchy kind" "I HATE crunchy. I won't eat it," I had sulked.

"Search for Omaha's healthiest seniors" announced The Creighton Gerontology Center announced plans for a "Search for Omaha's Healthiest Seniors."

The event is being sponsored by the gerontology center, KMTV and New Horizons newspaper in cooperation with the Health Fair of the Midlaiids.

The start of the "Search" was announced by Dr. Raymbnd W. Shaddy, associate vice president of the Creighton Health Sciences Schools, and Dr. Eugene J. Barone, director of the Creighton Gerontology Center. The project will emphasize the importance of daily exercise for older Americans.

"Many older adults become less active after retirement, and eventually become weaker and more vulnerable to illness and injury," Shaddy noted. "This program is the tirst step in a major plan by the Creighton Gerontology Center to ad-

Barone added that the benefits of daily exercise are well documented. "With a regular program of relatively easy daily exercise, all of us, including senior citizens, can control weight, strengthen the muscles and heart and improve breathing," he said.

"Exercise also can build self-esteem, reduce anxiety and depression and generally lengthen and improve quality of life. This can reduce health care costs and the need for Medicare and Medicaid assistance," Barone added.

Omaha-area residents 56 years and older are eligible to participate in the "Search for Omaha's Healthiest Seniors." Participants will be given a free and confidential health screening at one of the Health Fair of the Midlands sites.

The remaining Health Fair locations, dates and times are:

New Cassel Gerontology Center Friday, April 18, 8 a.m.-l p.m.

Saint Joseph Hospital, Sundc^r, April 20, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

The health screenings will include checks for proper height and weight, blood pressure, vision, oral screening, glaucoma and hearing. An optional blood-chemistry analysis with coronary risk profile is also available at most health fair sites for a small fee (eight-hour fasting required).

Data from each participant's health screening will he compared to a healthiest senior ideal profile. Those closest to the profile will be invited as finalists to a Sunday, April 27 "Health-On," where they will be asked to complete a series of simple tasks.

Memories of my grandfather

By Sadye 8. NewDUUi Thoughts of my Grandfather, Abraham Shulkin, bring to mind memories of someone who was soft spoken, loving, very religious and very wise.

I sow my Grandfather just twice in my lifetime, when I was five and again when I was twelve.

But he left a lasting impression and an inheritance of which I am very proud.

The first time was when we stopped in Sioux City, Iowa, to visit my Grandparents as we were on our wqy from New York City to make a new home in Montana.

I was fascinated with my Grandfather, who had a beautiful beard, he walked with a cane, as one leg was shorter than the other and his shoe had to be built up. He had had an accident with a runaway horse and wagon. He always had a smile for his grandchiidien for whom he had bard candy in his pockets.

We went on to Montana and a new home.

There was no kosher meat accessible which disturbed my Mother very much. She wrote to my Grandfather for advice. My Grandfather knowing that it was difficult enouf^ living in a community where there were no other Jewish families, wanted to make it as easy as one could for my Mother. Though being very pious, but very broadminded and understanding, he wrote . my Mother to buy the meat available and salt and soak it to make it kosher.

When I was twelve my Grandfather traveled by train from. Sioux City to visit his children in Montana. My Grandmother had packed enough food for him for the whole journey as he would

not eat on the train.

He visited us for several weeks, never missed a morning or evening that he did nol say his prayers.

When we came back to Sioux City and I attended the hoiidtty services at thu Adas Yeshuran Orthodox Synagogue I was spellbound seeing the Ark that held the Tbrahs.

In 1896 the articles of incorporation of the Synagogue were filed. In 1899 the Orthodox Jevirs of Sioux City bought a little church which they remodeled and converted into a Jewish Synagogue. Each member of the congregation made a contribution.

My Grandfather being an artist and a skilled craftsman carved and built the Ark. The inscription, top line, on either side of the Tablets (^ the Law are carved the words "This is the work of my hands, Abraham Shulkin".

Todty this Ark has become an important part of American Judaica.

A golden winged eagle hovers over a pair of hands stretched in the traditional blessing of the high priests and held reverently over carved tablets on which the Ten Commandments are inscribed in Hebrew.

Guarding the tablets are a pair of lions and a pair of golden doves.

The filigree like carving has a lace-like quality with Judaic figures visible in the carvings. Doves are perched on each of four posts, giving the unit a quality of richness and reverence.

In 1961 the Synagogue in Sioux City was sold.

The Ark found its way to the Jewish Museum in New York City, from there it went to the west

From Max I had a letter before Yom Tov. Also Henry and Shumel (Sam) had letters. Also Mike.

He writes that he is all right. Further there is no more news to write. All is OK. Be well, Your Father Abram Shmuel My Grandfather died soon after, September 1918. But his memory lingers on.

If I forget thee...

By Gloria Shukert Jones My paternal grandfather, Jacob Shukert, epitomized the devout. Orthodox Jewish zayde. He looked the part, with his meticulous grey beard, and the ever-present tallis and yarmuike. He began, ended, and interspersed each day with meditation and prayer. One would usually find him in his study, poring over Hebrew books, or chanting benedictions. He was sage and scholar, counselor and friend, interpreter of Judaic law and the Holy Scriptures. Formal education and a college degree were the only criteria he lacked to becoming a full-fledged rabbi.

He was, however, a shochet, which was convenient, since he was available to f)erform those sacred duties for the family-owned kosher meat market, as well as other similar businesses in the area. But despite his dedication to Judaism, he was surprisingly tolerant of modern problems and issues, such as interfaith matters. My aunt tells of an incident in her girlhood, when Catholic friends persuaded her to attend Mass with them. Fearing her father's wrath, she kept this a secret until her conscience finally made her confess her "travesty." My grandfather not only wasn't angry, but in fact, encouraged her exploration and comparison of other beliefs, as long as she could remain objective and keep her identity intact.

My own childhood is sparked with the memory of a grandfather who kept Jewish tradition alive, and made the holidays fun as well as meaningful.

He often entertained us with Bible stories and Yiddish songs. He explained the significance of such artifacts as the mezuzah, and the menorah.

1 A perfect mistake (continued from page 44) The dream continued, but now I was twelve. I was sitting in my mother's arms and crying. "Nanny has cancer, Debbie," Mom said, trying not to cry herself. "She's going to the hospital for chemotherapy. The doctors don't know what to expect."

A few weeks after that I recalled seeing my grandmother. Nanny's beautiful salt-and-pepper hair was almost gone. The widow's peak that I found intriguing was almost gone, too. Four of five wigs were on the coffee-table. Nanny was trying to decide which looked the best. She finally picked one. It was close enough. I hugged Nanny. She was losing a lot of weight and didn't have the strength to hug me back as tightly as usual. This time Nanny only smelled of jasmine.

The doctors said that Nanny's type of lung cancer was a definite result of thirty years of smoking. Although I was only twelve, I fit the pieces together: Nanny's chronic cough, the disgusting cigarettes, and her not feeling well. It all fit perfectly. Lung cancer.

A year later, the cancer was in remission. Nanny was going to be okay, or so we thought. Occasionally, she would have chemo treatments, which made her violently ill.

That's when Nanny was going to start my afghan. The pattern was beautiful, I thought. The blue and

white yarn would go perfectly in my room. The crowning glory would be the gigantic rose that Nanny would embroider after she was all done.

Only a master craftsman could make such a beautiful object.

Nanny started right away. As the days progressed, she worked on it less and less often; then one day, not at all.

I woke with a start and sat up in bed. I was awake, but I could remember what happened next. } could almost hear my grandfather 8aying,"Coma." I could see him crying, along with uncles, aunts, cousins, anfl my mom. I remembered that I had gone to see Nanny in the hospital two days before. She looked terrible. Her face was pale, her eyes were black, and she could barely talk. I had everything to do to keep from crying. "I love you, Nanny," I had whispered- Nanny had squeezed my hand in reply.

That was the last time I had seen Nanny alive.

I picked up the afghan once more and examined it. The mistakes made it even more beautiful. They were something no one else had, something Nanny had made especially for me. The miniature afghan was perfect.

A solitary tear slid gently down my cheek. That tear carried with it all the love and wonderful memories of my Nanny.

B'nai B'rith aids seniors America, is a country in love with the idea of youth. Look young. Feel young. Stay young. But according to the American Association of Retired Persons, since 1965 the number of Americans over 65 has increased 200 percerit faster than any other part of the population. By 1990, one in four Americans will be over 65, and by the year 2015 the figure will be one in three.

Despife their increasing numbers, senior citizens continue to be America's forgotten people: last in line for state, local and federal aid programs, and the first group affected by goverjiment cuts in health care assistance.

"Millions of American seniors feel they are getting the short end of the stick," said AARP spokesman Jack Christie. "They've worked 40 or 50 years contributing to this country's growth and prosperity^ Now, they are being cut out of state and local government community service programs, and shunted asiide by the federal government at the time when they need increased financial support to offset escalating health care costs."

Senior citizens have borne the brunt of federal cutbacks in health care assistance. According to Martin Corey, AARP's chief economist, "Since 1981, the average cost of a semi- private hospital room has doubled. On top of this, the Reagan Administration has cut 30 billion dollars in medicare assistance to senior citizens. As a result, hospital costs for seniors have increased 71 percent in the past five years."

In light of the budget cuts, volunteer organizations such as B'nai B'rith, with its well-established programming priorities for senior citizens, have become even more

important, almost crucial.

B'nai B'rith sponsors senior citizens housing which provides shelter for nearly 4,000 persons across the world. It makes available health insurance options for senior members to defray hospital and nursing home expenses, and offers a policy to bridge the gaps iff medicare coverage.

Additionally, B'nai B'rith sponsors a variety of programs that utilize the creative skills and talents of older citizens.

B'nai B'rith's concern for elderly Americans ranges beyond health care, to encompass housing needs as well. Since 1971, B'nai B'rith lias helped sponsor the construction of 19 apartment buildings for seniors in 15 communities throughout the United States. The program is funded through the department of Housing and Urban Developm^t.

It relies entirely on the expertise and involvement of dedicated B'nai B'rith volimteers who create, and develop these housing projects from inception to fruition.

Cutbacks in federal support for local community service programs have' had a severe impact upon many seniors living on fixed incomes in urban areas. Isolated, elderly Americans are uilable to enjoy community service prognuns wUcb once provided the opportunity to spend their time creatively and productively. Others are shut in, or handicapped, unable to fend for themselves.

In a score of cities across the United States, B'nai B'rith Community Volunteer Service Commission's Mitzvah Corps members help elderly citizens cope with the basics of everyday life. The work is simple', but vitally important.

He was my Zeidah, but I loved him no less when I called him Ba Ba. Ba Ba was a special person, a long-to-be remembered grandparent, my mother's •father. When he en-

tered a room, you could see sunbeams dancing.

He loved life, and I loved him. Your heart would skip a beat; it was like the begipning of a bright new day, with sunshine in every corner. Ba Ba's hazel colored eyes twinkled, and his smile revealed a dimple in cheek and chin. Sometimes Ba Ba with his booming voice sounded like a drill sergeant, but beneath his gruff exterior was a gentle soul. His heart was big as a

I called him Ba Ba mountain, and his personality just as colorful. His hug was like a warm and cuddly blanket wrapped around me on a cold and blustery day. His hands worked, donated, consoled, and inspired.

I remember Ba Ba bouncing me on his knee. I recall him taking me for long, unhurried walks. He took time to point out a fiery sunset; a scampering squirrel burying a nut. Together we listened to the chirping

crickets, and the thrilling birds. Ba Ba liked to swing me high above his shoulders in the park, so I could feel the texture of the knotty tree bark, and listen to the whisper of the leaves. Ba Ba always had time to look and to listen. He taught me to appreciate sight and sound.

He was a gold medal track star in University, and also a physical fitness and sports enthusiast. Therefore he emphasized proper nutrition, posture, and diligent work in my swimming and diving competition.

Ba Ba delighted in telling me the stories of our holidays, and of our people. AlJ the characters came to life with his inflections, gestures, and enthusiasm.

On Passover, at the Seder table, I was impressed with Ba Ba's special Haggadah that was beautifully bound and illustrated. It.

made the holiday more meaningful and important. He led our family in religious services, and complimented me on the holiday decorations I made. How well I recall Ba Ba carefully placing matzohs in a fringed, white satin matzoh cover ornamented in gold. I remember how 1 was rewarded for finding the hidden matzoh. I can still see Ba Ba filling a goblet with wine to be reserved for Elijah, and I was always perplexed at how the wine magically disappeared.

"When did Elijah come?" 1 would ask, disappointed that I did not see him. As I grew older it became obvious that it was Ba Ba who was adeptly standing in for Elijah.

To this day at the Seder table, no one occupies the chair that was Ba Ba's. 1 have the feeling that one Seder eve Ba Ba will simply enter the room as he always did, take his customary seat at the table, and pour the wine. Then everything will be all right again; like it always was with Ba Ba present. Yes, he was a special person.

Even the holiday candles attest to this as they drip-drip tearfully in memory of JBa Ba. With Ba Ba, each holiday became significant. His presence was magnetic, drawing every family member closer together, making us all more mindful of Jewish tradition. He was knowledgeable about gardening, and

he made home-grown horseradish for the holidays. Wow ... potent stuff!

Ba Ba always encouraged me with my religious education. He telephoned me on my first day of Hebrew schotj^ to share my enthusiasm. On that same day I compared my shiny new Hebrew book with his yellow tattered Hebrew school books. As 1 look back, I often think of how Ba Ba indulged me, and yet did not spoil me. He could be a disciplinarian, especially when it came to helping me with my Hebrew when I was in religious school. Here he demanded perfection. He would elide his glasses up and down on his nose; then bring them up on his forehead. <'•» Ba Ba stressed the importance of family ties. He gave me an excellent history of his family, including interesting stories of some of them on a tape recording. When I looked at the pictures that he shared with me, I visualized what it would be like to meet those people.

Memories are magnificent. My mind is flooded with pleasant memories of Ba Ba. He was a great inspiration to me. Just as 1 reserve a place for him each Passover at the Seder table, so I will always reserve a tender spot in my heart for that special person in my life — my Ba Ba, Moe Kagan.

By Jeremy Rofenbaum My grandpa Shep was born in 1911 in Detroit; Michigan. He was the youngest of nine children that came from a religious family. In the I930'B, he became a lawyer. Grandpa served in India in World War II. When the war was over, he came home and married Belle Bateman who became my grandma and they had two children Susan (my mom, and the oldeat) and Marilyn (my aunt, and the youngest).

X In the 1960'8 he was the president of a shul now called Beth Achim. He died in Detroit on the eve of Sukkot 5745 (Oct. 12, 1984).

Holidays were one of my grandpa Shep's favorite subjects. Grami^ loved Judaism and all the things about it. For instance, for Pesach he made a tiny tittle broom to dust hometa into the spoon. For SimdM-TDridi (when he was a

A classically American story

By Howard K. Marcus In 1913, he arrived in Omaha with very little to his name. Now, at age 87, he goes to work every day in the successful business he founded.

Louis Albert's story is classically American.

Interviewed at the Louis Albert and Son Foods Company office in downtown Omaha, Albert described both his early years and his life today.

As a boy in Russia, he worked in a bakery owned by Jews. He and his family were very poor, but at the time, even those people with money had little to buy with it, Albert said.

Hard candy and seltzer water were among the very few items that could be considered luxuries.

Just before he left the country, Albert's yearly salary was raised to a new high — $36 a year.

"I thought I was getting good money," Albert said.

Schools were virtually non-existent. The very rich sent their children to Moscow for schooling, but Albert's rural village had none.

Life in the rustic environment was difficult, Albert said.

Added to the general difficulty of village life was the threat of violence against Jews by soldiers.

Albert recalled the time when a pogrom was scheduled to take place in his village.

Though soldiers had already come into the town ready to fight, Albert recalled, "A Jewish fellow had a vodka place, a distillery. He offered them all, 'Come and have a drink first, before you do that.' They drank so much that they just fell down."

Albert said the night was a cold one. "They were lying frozen there the next morning, a lot of them. Dead."

As for the pogrom, it had been successfully avoided.

Conscription in the czar's army was a possibility many young Jewish boys faced, and Albert was no exception.

To avoid that fate, he bought a ticket to America.

During the long voyage, he remembered eating little except prune butter.

He arrived in the United States at Philadelphia, but was sent to Galveston, Texas, and then to work in an Omaha packing house.

His time there was short, about two days.

Then, he worked in a South Omaha candy factory for a week.

The pay was five dollars, in gold. Compared to his previous $36-a-year salary in Russia, it was a fortune. "I thought they made a mistake," said Albert.

Soon after that, a man named Rosenberg told Albert there was a way to make more than five dollars a week.

The young immigrant listened as Rosenberg explained how it could be done. Making the money involved picking apples at an orchard near Fremont.

With nothing to lose, Albert went, and was rewarded at the end of his work with $40 in cash.

"I didn't know anything about banking," said Albert, "So I bought a trunk, and put it (the money) in there."

When he opened the trunk lat^r to take out some of his hard-earned dollars, he discovered they had all been stolen.

"All I could do was cry," he said.

From that point on, with the exception of military service in World War I, Albert has been in^^lved in the food business.

He owned a succession 6f grocery stores in Omaha, beginning in 1919.

It was in the grocery stores that an in-house specialty began to attract attention: Albert's salad dressings.

Because the variety of salad dressings available at the time was limited, Albert said he thought he could do better by making them himself.

Using a four-quart electric mixer, he made dressings in his store.

The demand for salad drassing was so great that in 1949, Albert closed his grocery store and founded Louis Albert and Son Foods Company.

Larry, his son, has worked in the busbess since his teen years.

With offices at 16th and Fort and a manufacturing plant across the street, Albert's company now manufactures over 90 products.

He said the company's dressings and sauces are marketed in ten states.

Other company activities include distribution of products made by other manufacturers.

During a tour through the entire plant, Albert pointed out the many different containers which hold spices used to make dressings and sauces.

A variety of machines are involved ia the manufacturing process, including an automatic labeler.

Albert noted with wonder the machine's ca-i pacity: 118 bottles per minute. When he first began to make dressing, each bottle had to be . labeled by hand.

Why, aifter all of his success, does Albert still feel the need to come to work each day?

Part of the answer may be because of Albert's hobby What is it?

"Work," he said with a smile.

Sixty years as an attorney

By Howard K. Marcus A teacher can have a profound effect on a young man. ^ Omahan Jack Marer would agree with that statement, for it was a teacher who suggested he take up what would become his life's work â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the law.

Marer, 84, and an Omaha attorney for nearly 60 years, said in an interview at his home that he was unhappy as a high-school student in Indianapolis, Ind.

Commenting on trends in the law today, Marer said most of the general practice of law is gradually going to very large law offices.

Such firms are able to provide what Marer called "a one-stop law office." That is, all of a client's legal needs can be satisfied by staff members skilled in various aspects of law.

Also, he said large companies are foregoing the use of law firms altogether, preferring instead to establish their own in-house law departments.

Yet for the young attorney just starting out, Marer said the use of large law firms and the creation of in-house law departments is "a double-edged sword."

In-house departments tend not to hire many outsiders, said Marer, and large law firms are reducing their staffs in an effort to cut costs.

His advice to aspiring lawyers? "You have to have perseverance," he said.

Marer has it.

Even now, he puts in full days at his office.

When not at work, Marer likes to take walks with his wife, Anita.

"We hope that's what keeps us in reasonably good physical condition," he said, adding that he and his wife attempt to live a relatively calm life.

The Marers do not live in the past. They have an interest in current events and ideas that they satisfy by talking to young people and reading newspapers avidly.

"We try to keep alert and informed," said Marer.

But the song isn't only for children. As Omahan Sally Venger pointed out, the years after retirement are a time when you are "free to be you" and have the opportunity "to fulfill your dreams."

Sally tries to make the most of every day. She said she has always had a "hunger for learning." She worked for her father in his grocery store until she met her husband Abe Venger who died, eight yedrs ago.

This year they would have had their 48th wedding anniversary. "But life goes on," said Sally. "You just don't sit and mope." During her younger years while she worked in the grocery store, her two brothers and sister went to college. But that "gave me satisfaction," she commented.

She didn't mind that she didn't get to go. Instead, she attributes her love of books to the fact that she didn't go to college. She went to Central High School and "I just loved it," she remarked. Her favorite subject was French and she still harbors a desire to visit France someday. She also went to the Jewish Community Center "all the time" for classes. "They taught interesting courses there as they do now," she said.

ues now in her 78th year. She attends classes and lectures as often as she can. She belongs to two lecture series: Omaha Women's Townhall and the Uta Halee Lecture Series. She enjoys attending lectures and classes at the JCC. "I'm very interested in Hebrew learning" she explained. She also likes to participate in Rabbi Myer Kripke's study group that he conducts for Hadassah once a month at the Livingston Plaza Apartments.

In addition to seeking knowledge through outside sources, Sally has a collection of approximately 200 books in her own apartment. There are books on innumerable Jewish subjects as well.as by a variety of Jewish authors. She also collects cookbooks, and books about art and language among other subjects.

"Books are great companions," she observed. Even when she watches television she has a book or a paper on her lap.

Sally feels it's important for older people to keep busy and be with others.

Sally feels it's important for older people to keep busy and "be with others. Loneliness is not a pleasant thing. It's very devastating. There's no need to isolate yourself. There's so many groups to get into," she explained. A past president of the Young Energetic Seniors, a social group with about 300 members under the auspices of the Jewish Federation's Bureau for the Aging, Sally said the YES group is one of her "greatest sources of enjoyment." She takes an active part in the group and has gone on many of the YES-sponsored out-of-town to such places as New Orleans, Texas, St. Louis, Kansas City and the Ozarks.

Sally was recently appointed the representative from the Bureau for the Aging on the Jewish Cultural Arts Council. A member of Hadassah and the National Council of Jewish Women, Sally is also a LOVE (League Offering Volunteers to the Elderly) volunteer at .the Rose Blumkin Jewish Home.

"I have worked on the Federation campaign for many years," she added. Years ago, she was a Docent . at Joslyn Art Museum. As a volunteer at Joslyn she was able to take classes there in art history. "It was a wonderful learning experience," she said. "I love the theater," she continued, "and music." She likes to go to the opera and to ballet perfoimances as well as to productions at the JCC. "I also enjoy synagogue services and go regularly," she noted. She likes to cook and bake. And besides reading "every waking moment I'm not doing something else," she likes to go to the movies, too.

Interested in politics, too, Sally remarked that "one of the greatest experiences of my life was being chosen as a senior representative for Hal Daub. We had five 6ays of sessions in Washington, D.C. There were representatives from over 200 committees on aging ... over 200

interns from all over the country."

Not only was Sally honored to be selected as one of the interns, she truly enjoyed the experience from lunching with Daub's wife Cindy to meeting Claude Pepper, Florida's 85-year-old member of the House of Representatives, "a strong champion of the rights of the aging."

When Sally returned to Omaha she was a speaker at several groups' meetings relating her experiences in Washington.

Although she describes herself as "very independent," Sally considers herself to be "the typical Jewish grandmother" who gives advice to her five grandchildren. Her daughter, Enid Wenner, who has two children, lives in Denve^t "It's fun having a daughter who lives out of town," Sally said. "I can go visit her." Another daughter, Nancy Hornstein, lives in Omaha and is the mother of three. Nancy's husband, Bennett Hornstein, died in March after a nine-year battle with cancer. "His mother, Adele Hornstein, and 1 spent every afternoon with him in the past few months " Sally said.

Sally has lived in Omaha all her life and she said she loves it. "A city is what its people are. Never have 1 seen such an outpouring of support and comfort extended to Bennett's family by this community. We'll be forever grateful. The children's friends were constantly by their sides. All this support helped to heal the pain of our loss. When I see the caliber of caring, sharing young people we have in Omaha, I feel we are leaving our city in very good hands."

Besides participating in the YES club and other organizations, attending lectures and meetings, and volunteering, Sally enjoys "a card game once in awhile." She likes to eat out and occasionally have company for dmnerin her own home.

"I love to wiiFaround the lake" near her apaflfment and at Westroads. She recommends watching one's health — "to work on it" — and "live wisely without overdoing it. We're blessed in this country with Medicare and Medicaid. It adds to peoples' security. There's help if they need it," she added.

"When I see the caliber of caring, sharing young people... I feS we are leaving our city in very good hands." ' But most of all, she advises older pebple "to keep busy apd be with people. There's so many groups to get into." She belongs to the American Association for Retired Persons (AARP), a national organization that publishes a magazine and offers insurance and travel advantages to senior'citizens.

She noted that "the Eastern Nebraska Office on Aging has been reaching out to the community."

SaUy takes her own advice: "I just have to be with people. I love people and reaching out and-making fiiends. This gives me more pleas' ure than anything else I know." '^

Kibbutz Yizre'el: A kibbutz for all ages H 1^^^

By Jeff Black (WZPS) - A few years short of its fortieth anniversary, Kibbutz Yizre'el near the northern town of Afula, boasts soQie 260 members from all over the world and an enviable record in two completely different areas of social activity. The kibbutz, supported by traditional farming along with more modern industry such as the manufacture of robots for cleaning swimming pools, excels in both sports and the care of its members' elderly parents.

The name of Kibbutz Yizre'el is known in Israel for its reputation as being one of the hothouses of Israeli rugby. Although the sport is still in its infancy in Israel, with less than ten sides in the national league, rugby is gaining popularity and the kibbutz is definitely one of the leaders of the pack.

Visiting player arxl coach Among club players in South Africa, one of the bastions of the game, Kibbutz Yizre'el is synonymous with Israel as a whole. When Juri Erwee, a member of the Villagers Rugby Club in South Africa, mentioned to a fellow player that he felt like living in another country for a while, Israel, or rather Kibbutz Yizre'el was suggested.

For this season, Juri can be found playing for and coaching the kibbutz side. So far, he says, "It's been excellent. I've really been made to feel at home. When you take into account the number of years they've been playing here, the standard's good. I'll definitely recommend it to other South Africans."

For those who find rugby just a little too physical, the kibbutz's full-time basketball coach is always on hand, soccer is organized through the Israeli school and kibbutz movement networks and windsurfing provides an attractive summer sport. Armchair athletes can participate in a game of competition bridge held almost every week. In any social framework, there is always one person who wants to be different. Peter Lipworth, a South African oleh, can be found in his spare time hang-gliding over the Mount Tabor area.

Not all the kibbutz's resources, however, are devoted to sport. Gavrush Nachushtan for example, recently spent three years in Holland studying for his Ph.D. in gerontology, the science of the social and psychological needs of elderly people. For over 20 years. Kibbutz Yizre'el has adopted a policy of caring for the parents of its members. "As a collective community, we feel responsible not just for our members but also for their families," Garush explains. "We believe, that in the family framework, parents are very important and if parents want to join in our life, they should come."

Of the thirty parents presently living on the kibbutz, the majority came to Yizre'el after the death of their spouse. Rather than face a lonely future, they was the chance of living with their children and grandchildren as a much more attractive proposition.

Parents who come to the kibbutz have the choice of living in a standard kibbutz member style hmise or buying their own, more luxurious home, situated in the area specially reserved for members' parents. Although money is not a criteria for rejecting anyone, the parents are expected to contribute to their upkeep* by contributing their pension benefits to the kib-

V\fof1(ers of all ages Once housed, a parent is then, if he or she wishes, added to the work rota of the kibbutz.

The oldest parent on the kibbutz, a sprightly 87 year-old, can still be found in the carpentry shop, fixing furriiture. For those who find a-four-hour work day too strenuous, the kibbutz opened a special club house this past year where parents meet daily, under the care and supervision of kibbutz members like Judy Scott, who was a social worker in London for the Jewish Blind Society before coming to Israel.

Judy's working day begins with helping those parents who are bedridden, bringing them breakfast and helping them wash and dress before taking them, if they fefel up to it, along to the clubhouse. There, occupational therapy is provided, along with the chance to sit and chat over a cup of coffee before lunch. Trips out of the kibbutz are often planned for them, especially during the summer.

Meeting new requirements With the parents growing older - eleven out of thirty are over 80 - the kibbutz has set aside special rooms for the wheelchair-bound and round-the-clock medical care is available. Even so, Gavrush Nachushtan feels that this is not enough and he is currently working on expanding the range of services the kibbutz can offer.

The first stage of his plan calls for the construction of a care/health center comprising a physiotherapy studio, rehabilitation workshop and daily care-room. Alongside this, four hospital rooms are planned, situated in two specially renovated houses which will be on either side of the kibbutz's clinic. The kibbutz has accepted Gavrush's plans and its next step is finding the $120,000 financial investment for the initial stage.

Judy Scott, herself, has more than a professional interest in the expansion of the facilities for the elderly. Her widowed father has recently come to Kibbutz Yizre'el and three weeks after his arrival he still marvels at how the welcome he received made him feel at home immediately.

His enthusiasm bears moving testimony to Judy's own belief that the kibbutz should not push its elderly away to old-age homes. "The whole concept of kibbutz is that kibbutz cares for its own," she explains. Indeed Kibbutz Yizre'el is providing a shining example of the basic tenet of communal responsibility upon which the kibbutz movement was founded.

Passover recipes

By Mary Fellman There's still time to add some more new recipes to your Passover Collection. These will add delicious tastes to meals from morning to night.

Enjoy.

BAKED CHICKEN WITH MUSHROOMS 3-pound frying chicken 3 tablespoons chicken fat or pareve margarine '/^ teaspoon onion powder '^ V» teaspoon garlic powder lOV^-ounce can condensed clear chicken soup, undiluted V4 pound mushrooms, diced 3 tablespoons water 2 tablespoons potato starch Cut chicken into quarters. Heat the fat in a large skillet. Add chicken and saut^ until brown.

Place chicken in a baking dish. To the fat in the skillet, add onion powder, garlic powder, and condensed soup. Blend water with potato starch until smooth. Gradually add this mixture to soup mixture and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened. Add mushrooms and gravy to chicken.

Cover (use aluminum foil if pan has no cover) and bake in a moderate oven 350°F) one hour or until tender. Serves 3 or 4.

MATZO APPLE PUDDING 3 matzos 3 large apples 'A cup currants % cup raisins 2 teaspoons cinnamon *A teaspoon salt Dash of nutmeg (optional) Grated rind of 1 lemon % cup firmly packed brown sugar 4 tablespoons melted cooking fat 6 eggs, well beaten Soak matzos until soft. Press out as much of water as possible. Pare and cut apples in small piieces. Add apples, currants, raisins, cinnamon, salt, nutmeg, lemon rind, sugar, and melted fat.

Mix well. Add eggs, mixing thoroughly. Pour into a greased casserole. Bake in moderate oven (350°F.) about 45 minutes, or until apples are tender. Serves 6 to 8.

EGG DROPS .

2 eggs 1\4 teaspoon salt '^ V& cup water 10 tablespoons cake meal or matzo meal Combine well-beaten eggs with salt, water, and cake meal. Mix thoroughly until mixture is smooth. Drop by spoonfuls into boiling soup and cook 2 or 3. minutes.

MOCK NOODLE PUDDING 4 matzos 3 eggs, well beaten 1/^ teaspoon salt 4 tablespoons sugar 5 tablespoons butter, melted 1 cup walnuts, chopped 3 apples, pared and sliced very thin Vi teaspoon cinnamon Break matzos into thin strips. Pour boiling water over them in a colander, drain, let cool.

Stir in beaten eggs, salt, 3 tablespoons sugar, and butter. Pour half this mixture into a well-greased casserole. Cover with walnuts and apples. Sprinkle with cinnamon and remaining sugar, (^over with remaining matzo mixture. Dot with butter.

Bake in moderate oven (350°F.) V2 hour. Serve plain or with desired fruit sauce. Serves 6 to 8.

RAISIN BARS 4 eggs, separated >/^ cup sugar 2 tablespoons water ^ cup cake meal 1 teaspoon vanilla Vi cup blanched almonds, chopped Vt cup raisins, cut flne •^A teaspoon salt Beat egg yolks until light. Sift in sugar and beat until light and fluffy. Add water, cake meal, and vanilla. Mix well. Add almonds and raisins; blend thoroughly. Beat egg whites with salt until stiff and fold in lightly. 'Rirn into greased pan to about >/4-inch thickness. Bake in slow oven BAKED BREAST OF CHICKEN (325^.) until browned (about 10 minutes). Cut into 4 X 1-inch strips. Return to pan, placing 4 whole chicken breasts, boned them on one cut side. Brown again and* roll in 1 cup soup nut crumbs 1 teaspoon ground ginger powdered sugar.

Cream sugar and egp until light. Add walnuts, salt, and cake meal. Mix thoroughly. Drop by Preheat oven to 350°F. Cut chicken breasts in teaspoonfuls on a greased cookie sheet, allowing half. BAKED MATZOS AND CHEESE 1 poifnd dry cottage cheese % teaspoon salt . 5 eggs 6 matzos (whole) V^ teaspoon cinnamon Dash of nutmeg (optional) 1 teaspoon sugar ' 2 tablespoons butter Combine cheese with salt and 3 eggs. Mix well.

Dip whole matzos in remaining 2 eggs, beaten lightly. Place layer of matzos in a buttered dish.

Clover with a layer of cheese. Sprinkle with mixture of cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar. Alternate layers of matzos and cheese until all is used. Bake in moderate oven (350°F.) 30 minutes. Serves 6.

STUFFED ROCK CORNISH HENS 6 Rock Cornish hens (1 pound each) '/^ cup chicken fat or pareve margarine >/i cup diced onion 1 cup diced mushrooms 6 matzos, Hnely broken % teaspoon salt V§ teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon paprika 1 egg, slightly beaten lO^/^-ouhce can condensed clear chicken soup, undiluted Chicken fat or pareve margarine Saute onion and mushrooms in the fat until tender but not browned. Add broken matzos and toast lightly. Combine salt, pepper, paprika, egg, and soup. Add to matzo mixture. Lightly fill body cavities with stuffing. Close openings with skewers. Place on a rack in a large roasting pan, breast-side-up. Brush liberally with chicken fat

or pareve margarine. Roast uncovered in a hot oven (425°F), brushing occasionally with additional fat, for one hour or until tender. Serves 6.

ROASTED POTATOES 8 medium potatoes (about 2 pounds) 1 cup ketchup Salt and pepper to taste These are pretty and tasty. If you are making a pot roast, you may also bake the potatoes with some of the gravy from the roast. Preheat oven to 360T. Parboil the potatoes in '/4 cup water for 10 minutes. Drain, peel, and cut each one into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece in ketchup until well coated. Season with salt and pepper.

Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes or until a hard golden brown crust forms on the potatoes. Serves 12.

PASSOVER ONION ROLLS 1 small onion, cut in half 1 tablespoon chicken fat V^ cup oil 1 cup water 1 cup matzah meal V^ teaspoons salt 4 large eggs 1 egg for egg wash (optional) Vii teaspoon salt for egg wash (optional) These may be split and used for sandwiches or as a base for tuna, chicken, or egg salads. The dough can be made ahead and refrigerated overnight. Preheat oven to 350° F. Grease a cookie sheet, and fill a small bowl with cold water. Insert metal blade into food processor. With machine running, drop onion into the feed tube and process until minced or mince onion with sharp knife. Heat chicken fat in small skillet. Saute onions until golden brown. Set aside. Bring oil

and water to a boil in a 2-quart saucepan. Remove from heat and add matzah ifteal and salt all at once. Mix well with wooden spoon. Place in processor work bowl. Add 2 eggs and pulse until well mixed (about 3 seconds). Add remaining 2 eggs and the onions. Pulse until well mixed or remove to a mixing bowl and blend with electric mixer. Shape into 2-inch rolls and place about 2 inches apart on the cookie sheet, dipping your hands in the water to avoid sticking. Combine egg and salt for egg wash and brush tops of rolls. Bake 50 to 60 minqtes or until golden brown. Cool for several minutes before removing from cookie sheet.

HIDDEN-TREASURE MEAT LOAF 2 pounds ground chuck 2 eggs, slightly beaten % cup matzo meal >/i teaspoon salt V& teaspoon pepper Il-ounce can tomato-and-mushroom sauce 6 (about Vt pound) frankfurters Mix beef with eggs, matzo meal, salt, pepper, and '/a cup tomato-and-mushroom sauce. Pack half this mixture into a greased 9x5x3-inch loaf pan or shape in a greased shallow pan. Arrange four frankfurters lengthwise on the meat; cut the remaining two in half and arrange lengthwise also, so that frankfurters cover the entire length of the meat. Top with the balance of the meat mixture. Pour the rest of the tomato and mushroom sauce over the top. Bake in a moderate oven (350°F) one hour. Serves 8.

YOM TOV MEATBALLS 1 matzo, finely broken '4i cup water 1 pound ground beef 1 egg, slightly beaten 1 teaspoon pepper '/ii cup matzo meal 3 tablespoons vegetable shortening 1 medium onion, diced % cup medium-dry Concord wine 11-ounce can tomato-and mushroom sauce '/^ teaspoon sugar Soak broken matzo in water until watÂŤr is absorbed; Combine with ground beef, egg, salt, and pepper. Form mixture into about thirty meatballs. Roll them in the matzo meal. Heat shortening in a large skillet. Add meatballs and onion; cook over medium heat until lightly browned on all sides. Combine remaining ingredients; pour over meatballs; cover and simmer 15 minutes.

Serves 4.

BRISKET ROAST 4 pounds brisket of beef 3 tablespoons cake meal 1 teaspoon salt V4 teaspoon garlic powder 2 cups cooked or canned tomatoes 2 medium onions, sliced 1 small green pepper, diced 1/4 cup diced celery Brown meat slowly in a heavy roasting pan or Dutch oven. If it is very lean, add a little fat.

Combine cake meal, salt, pepper, and garlic pow-

der. Sprinkle over meat. Add tomatoes, onions, green pepper, and celery. Cover pan and roast in a moderate oven (350°F) for about 3 hours or until tender, or cook over law heat on top of the stove for the same length of time. Add water if necessary. If desired, cook potatoes with the meat during the last hour, adding extra salt if you do this. Serves 8i PASSOVER CARROT CANDY 1 '/^ pounds carrots, cooked 1 pound sugar >/i cup orange jtiice '/4 tablespoon grateid orange rind % teaspoon salt 2 ounces almonds, ground .1 ounce bitter almonds, ground 1 teaspoon ginger 1 teaspoon vanilla Mash c'arrots and press off all juice through a strainer. To mashed carrots add remaining ingredients. Cook in sauce pan on low flame Vi hour or more until very thick, stirring often to prevent scorching. Sprinkle a little ginger and sugar on a board. Spread carrot mixture evenly over this to about V* inch thickness. Sprinkle sugar and ginger over the top. Let cool slightly.

Cut into 1-inch diamonds or squares before completely hardened.

ALMOND BALLS FOR SOUP 2 eggs, separated V* pound ground almonds Vt teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind Beat egg yolks and add almonds, salt, and lemon rind. Mix well. Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites. Heat oil 1 inch deep in a skillet. Drop batter in from teaspoon. Fry until golden brown.

Drain on absorbent paper. Serve in hot soup.

Memories of grandma and grandpa

By Mn. Irving Nogg Sharing private thoughts has never been a practice of mine. After reading about the Yearly Contest of the Jeivish Historical Society it was my decision to share childhood memories of early Omaha connected with my beloved Grandparents, Esther and Albert Kaplan.

They were two of the most special people in my life and their influence has reoiained vital throughout my lifetime.

It has been said that memories, the waives of yesterday are the treasures of today. They were the foundation of a happy childhood, serene adolescence and made me proud of family and my Jewish Heritage.

As a second generation American Jewess I am proud of my roots and ethnic values. My wonderful set of grandparents shared* so much of themselves in helping me to learn about my people, traditions and the dreams of "Eretz Israel."

Grandma Esther Goldstone Kaplan was the most influential personality in my early formative years. While my Grandpa Albert was kidding and joking she was always serious, loving and caring.

They would be termed today as a "balanced act."

She was my best friend, surrogate, mother many times, and an honestto-goodness old-fashioned "Bobbe."

Her value system was founded on charity and good works. She was an active participant in charitable organizations. She taught me the real meaning of the word "Tzedekah."

No person was ever turned away from her door in sickness and she gave a helping hand, not charity.

"Tzedekah and Mitzvot" were the creed they lived by.

My earliest memories are of that wonderful interesting duplex at 2215 Lake Street. It was next door to the Telephone Exchange and around the corner firom the Fire Station.

The front porch had on^ of those marvelous swings on a metal standard. I spent many hours swinging while Grandma told stories about her homeland, family and coming to America. I remember being totally fascinated when Bh6 told the story about the fabulous outlaw Jesse James.

The backyard was huge. In one comer was a chicken coup where my sister and I would take ai basket to collect freshly laid warm eggs for breakfast. Her pantry was filled with untold goodies such as jars of homemade sugar cookies and pink peppermints for "the kinder." She saved all of her empty "Swee-touchnee" tea tins for my sister and myself to keep our collectibles m.

The most wonderful treat I can remember was to take the old-fashioned street car to their home. If it was in the summer we would get up early on Thursday morning and head out for "Shabbas" shopping.

Grandma would have on a clean

starched dress and apron, her hair freshly washed and pulled back into a silvery gray bun at the nape of her neck enhancing her beautiful widow's peak. Her apron held two pockets, one for her shopping and the other she kept for "Tzedekah".

Our first stop was at Peterson's Bakery where I got a freshly baked butterfly roll to sustain me. Next door at IXichman's Grocery she shopped for her fruits and vegetables. Across the street we went to Price's Drugs for sundries and got to pick out any treat we desired.

On the way home to deposit our first load of purchases we usually stopped and visited with Mrs. Simon who lived directly across the street from my grandparents. Their son Ray used to come sit on the front steps and talk. You all know him today as a prominent Omaha attorney and the man who married Joee Cohen.

After lunch we went to North 24th Street, the place with all the good smells and foods. We invaded Shukert's Meat Market, (remember Helen?), Adler's Bakery and Crounses for fresh fish.

The big treat of the week was Mike Cotton's Dry Goods Store.

Here I had the chance to pick out crochet thread and a piece of material of my own choosing. Later Grandma Esther would instruct me in some new stitch or edging for an apron. She was a "Ma\Kh" of the handwork guild. To this day I credit her with giving me the gift of being able to sew, knit and crochet. Her hands were indeed golden.

None of our family will ever forget the aromas that came from her kitchen on Shabbas and HoiidiQrs. We all played games on the living room floor and listened to the tunes of the player piano.

Her winding staircase was shiny and smelled of furniture polish. "The bedrooms with their brass headboards and downy comforters make me nostalgic even tod^. She let us play with her ivory dresser sets and jewelry. She later gave me her gold bracelet to keep and I am never without it.

High Holidatys, Mother, Grandmother, my sister and inyself wquld sit upstairs in the Litvasha l^hul and look down at Dad and Gran(^a.

A special and proud time of my young life.

Their Golden Wedding Anniversary brought ]}eople from all walks of life. They received much love and respect.

My Grandmother Esther was a phenomenal person. Being blind and crippled she never ceased to pass on the best life had to offer, never complaining, always accepting.

She touched my life in ways that I am still discovering today. No one needs to tell me I am a lucky, lady, I know I am one of the fortunate of my generation who can proudly say, "I remember Bobbe and Zade."

My grandmother — my grandfather (unforgettable Bobie Geta) ^^

By Louise M. Abrahamson P Geta Simon (Shames), Paris, Racusin, Mazie f — everyone of the names belong to "Bobie Geta" — and, tells the story about an incredibly beautiful and unforgettable woman. A "dynamite lady" with lots of "chutzpah" ... who provided the very foundation for family and life to its fullest.

Now, as I recall the past and reflect about the person I came to know as "Bobie Geta" I remember that she had tremendous strength of character. She had a firmness and stability that made me aware that she was a true woman of substance. Along with her strength she had her gentle and caring ways. She had great empathy for those in trouble and she was a very special lady to members of her family. Her legacy to all cannot be measured in a monetary sense but rather for her zest for living, her ability to know how to cope with problems, her good name and her very deep love for her family.

Geta worked very hard throughout her life — life was not easy — for she faced constant strife and turmoil in caring for her husbands and children; however throughqut her life she maintained a keen sense of huriior along with a deeprooted tie to her family. Her family's concerns

were hers 100% of the time.

Geta had a unique sense of insight — her mind seemed to work with such quickness and she was able to instill confidence with her rationale in solving problems. Geta gave freely of her advice id wisdom when it was sought and her own lily always felt comforted when they sought her help. Just to know that you could share with Bobie gave one a sense of relief. I think I can safely say that Bobie was a winner in every sense of the word! She knew how to make every day count and did look forward to life with great expectancy.

Geta's life began in a small town in Russia near Riga. The Simon (Shames) family was large and she learned from early childhood the importance of family and the well-being of one's family. Geta married for the first time at the youthful age of fifteen. Her marriage was shortlived because her husband was killed in a freak windmill accident; however, they had two daughters. A year after she was widowed, Geta married Herman Racusin. Geta bore five daughters and a son during her marriage to Herman. With new hope for a better way of life Herman went to America and emigrated to Omaha to establish a business and hoping to send for his family. Life

and making a living was difficult for Herman and when all looked bleak and rather hopeless Geta's brother, Ben Simon (known as B. A. Simon), sent the money for Geta and the children to come to Omaha to join Herman who had established himself in business. He was now the owner of a shoe repair shop. Herman had one son from ft previous marriage; thus, Geta took on the task of raising r>ine children. It was a struggle to eke out a living — providing for such a large family meant many sacrifices. Because Geta had such exceptional drive and was so ambitious for her family they were able to survive a very trying period of their life. She was able to maintain a traditional Jewish lifestyle and taught her children how important it was to live by the Jewish tradition.

Geta did not believe in sparing the rod — when she felt her children needed disciplining she readily tried to put them in the right direction.

If they were disrespectful or shirked their duties she took them to task. She was able to instill in them a keen sense of responsibility not only for family but also for others. Geta insisted that her children attend school. She felt that was very important for them to learn the ways of the new country and to be knowledgeable so they could be independent as they matured. The children helped when they could and took on jobs outside of their home in order to keep the family going and to help ease the burden for their parents.

Geta prided herself on her ability to dress her children in stylish and wellrcared for clothes.

She felt appearances were very important and reflected upon her as a parent if they appeared dirty and sloppy. Geta also knew it was important to encourage the quality of independence in her children and worked tirelessly to prepare them for the day when they would be expanding their horizons and have families of their own. It was important, she felt, that they learn to face the struggles of life. In the true sense of the word, Bobie was the matriarch of her faihily. Unfortunately, Herman became ill and died in 1926.

The children by this time however were at an age where they could take on jobs and help their mother get through a very trying period of her life.

Geta was tested over-and-over again. Thankfully, she was able to get on with her life. Although she was known as a stern and detnanding parent, she was also very wise in her advice. She always took the time to comfort others and listen to the problems her children were faced with.

Geta also knew how to stretch her dollars and, found ways to "make do" ... I recall she had the strangest slips and nightgowns, bras and girdles.

I realized later why this was ... it was,because she would sit by the hour, in the evening, patching whatever she could. She "zolivad" to throw anything away that could be salvaged. She patched everything, including tablecloths, sheets, pillow cases, dish towels, dresses, shirts, etc.... God forbid, anything was wasted.

Geta remained a widow until her children were grown and married and then decided to marry again. Her husband was from Sioux City, Iowa' and so she moved there and tried to make a home for him and his handicapped daughter. Geta, with her nature of warmth and caring took care of her blind stepdaughter and felt that her life ' had new meaning. Geta had the misfortune to lose still another husband because of his untimely death. Geta then decided to return to Omaha and lived with one of her daughters and her family; however, from time-to-time she traveled to Chicago or Los Angeles to spend time with her daughters who lived in those cities. (continued from page 72) The wonderful memories of "Bobie Geta" have not been erased.

With great love and affection I recall a few of those cherished mempries. Geta loved to listen to "stories" that were on the radio .(no television in those days). She also loved to tell and to listen to jokes.

A favorite expression of hers of the old radio days was if she'd miss an, episode, "nu, vos hertzach mit Tracy?" (referring to the Dick Tracy radio series). Geta's recreation consisted totally of being with her children and grandchildren. She was always ready for a "gamela bridge." Even if she were in bed and almost asleep, if she heard the mere mention of a possible bridge game, she'd quickly don her robe and sUppers and call out to her family, '*nu. zoli mer schpeillen a bissela bridge?

Whenever there was a Cousin's Club, a wedding, a bar mitzvah or a bris we could count on her making teglach, kichel or gefilte fish (which of course she made from scratch).

Weekends she always spent with her children or family and when they'd call and say, "rhama, what's for dinner?" she would promptly reply, "mine kinde, Ich hob fleish mit potatoes" and as an afterthought she'd add, "ders doh pickle and ketsup, and bread — never mind, there's plenty for everybody."

An incident'that one of her grandsons lovingly recalls is how "Bobie Geta" worried about him when he had a date. She feared he might run short of cash. So, before he left home, she'd call him over to her, pull out her coin purse, take out some change and stuff it in his pocket saying, "gay mine zun, have a good time." One of her famous and

remembered expressions was, "I may not be rich in the hundredta, but I can afford a dollar just like the rest." And, even with her meager funds she'd always find a few extra cents to put in the "puska" — always remembering those who were less fortunate than she.

Geta spoke great words of wisdom to her grandsons as they prepared to marry. She'd take them off to the side and give them advice saying, "mine shenna zun, listen to your boba, when your wife cooks something or,bakes something, and even if it isn't any good, always give her a kiss and tell her, honey, it's just delicious — that way she'll feel good and will keep trying to make what you like." If you tell your new little bride her food isn't good she'll probably cry and won't want to try again. Such wise words they were!

Bobie Geta seemed to make things happen — we could always count on her words of wisdom. We, in our family, have a very special place in our hearts for her memory.

I know that for myself I try, to this day, to set some oi my goals atune to her philosophy. F truly enjoy remembering some of her ways and the unique way she had of showing people she cared.

Even though "Bobie Geta" has been gone for some thirty years, I arid many hiembers of our family make that trek to visit her grave regularly ... we share so much with her. We seem to find comfort in sharing with her because we still remember how she cared and because she had a way of "fixing" things. I feel blessed that I can call her my "Bobie Geta" and I pray she is now resting peacefully. She gave so much ' of herself and touched so many of our lives. Truly, hers is the tradition of the past that must not and will not be forgotten.
