Passover is one of my favorite holidays. Images abound. There are the special foods, the ritual of the Seder, and perhaps most of all, the historical continuity of telling the Exodus story to the children.

Passover is an opportunity to gather together with our families and focus much attention on the youngsters.

Papa, ich vill feragyn der fir hashes (a relatively loose translation of the Yiddish that I personally used in asking the four questions.)

Soon, too soon, the toddler of the Seder table grows and becomes a bar or bat mitzvah, and then a teenager bent on exploring the universe.

In Omaha, the teenager's universe includes the opportunity for club membership in both synagogue youth groups and B'nai B'rith Youth Organizations. '.

This is the area that the Jewish Press has selected as the theme of this Passover issue. We are taking a brief look at the various youth groups in Omaha to tell these youngsters that their Jewish community is interested in them and their future.

Jewish youth groups in Omaha have had a superb history. Many members from years gone by have attained distinguished reputations on international, national, and local levels. In many cases, today's Jewish leaders can look back upon successful experiences in their local youth groups.

Jewish youth always active

By Bert Lewis Long before the AZA came into existence, Jewish youth of the community formed and belonged to clubs and organizations of every description.

Starting as far back as 1886, the first documented group was the Young Men's Hebrew Association. This club became the umbrella for many groups which affiliated under the auspices of the YMHA years later.

Various clubs took shape by the early 1920s, probably because there really wasn't much entertainment for the young people. The times were economically tough and it was common for kids to begin work at an early age.

The dollar was scarce and spending to entertain kids was unheard of. So, clubs became a social thing. It. was something to do, it was cheap and it was a way to get together with one's contemporaries.

Often these groups met at private homes. An item in a 1924 Jewish Press might have read "the .Junior Zionists met Sunday at 2 o'clock at the home of Chairn Yankel at 1827 Grace Street. The meeting was devoted to the study of Palestine and the discussion was led by Mr. Malamud. After the questions and answers, refreshments were served. The next meeting will be at Zlata Surkehs house at 3108 Lincoln Boulevard." This type of thing was very prevalent. Those were simple times, when just spending an evening at somebody else's house was an outing, They met in public places too. Some of the bigger organizations, for example, would meet in rooms rented in the old Lyric Building downtown.. These rooms were called Jewish Center rooms and they preceded the JCC on 20th and Dodge. ; I read a touching article in a very old Jewish Press which told of an organ-

ization of newsboys who gathered for social contact and athletic events in those rooms. It was said to be "most gratifying to take these youngsters off the streets and into a decent, wholesome Jewish environment."

Yes, (here have always been clubs.

Girls clubs and boys clubs and mixed clubs. Ther/e were clubs with names like the Live Wire Club, the Alamito Club, the Young Men's Jewish Welfare organization and the Jr. sons of Zion and the Jr. Daughters of Zion. There was the Thorpeian Club, the Henrietta Szold Club and the Samgold Club.

There were many chapters under the Young Judea organization and there was Junior Hadassah, Ye Te Mo Club, the Jolly Juniors, the Hatikvah Girls, the Ra Oth Society and the P E D club.

In recent decades the synagogue youth groups formed, and the B'nai B'rith Girls clubs and the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization (BBYO).

Clearly, there was no shortage of organized groups for the Jewish young of Omaha, all through the years.

Jnlerestingly, the publicity surrounding the oldest clubs always notes the fact that community leaders often were among the sponsors and advisors. As if there was a deliberate effort to create an environment where some guidance could be demonstrated.

Item after item, reporting on the formation of a new club lists advisors and sponsors. Always it is more than clear that these adults played an important role in the doings of the groups. Not once, in reading countless pages of club information( did I see problems with adult support. The elders must have realized what a golden opportunity they had, and exerted more than a little effort to help these youngsters grow up in that unsophisticated time.

Young Judea Although the history of Young Judea began nationally in 1909, Omaha formed the original local group in about 1913.

Accordiiig to her memory, Young Judea was organized in Omaha by a young university utudent named Noah Kahn.

He led the group for at least a year, perhaps longer, before his graduation. He persuaded Max Kaplan to take over BB leader and Kaplan served for at leaot a year, then moved away.

One local parent who gave unstintingly of time and energy for the youngstera and Young Judea was Ethel Levenson Edgar. Her determination to instill her children and their peers with1 Jewish valueu and Zionistic teaching is remembered by many who were fortunate to come into her fold. She advised, led, supervised and served Young Judea in countless ways.

Before his departure, he turned over the group to Bernice Solig. Her recollections are of a large number of boys and girls of mixed ages. They were separated into two boys clubs and three girls clubs, according to age. These were the first Young Judeans here.

Mrs. Naiman recalled the names of two especially active girls — Libby Minkin and Celia Ross. It is believed that both ladies went on to a lifetime of devotion to Zionistic work.

Bernice Solig led the five groups for at least three years before leaving to make her home in Chicago in 1918. Because she was determined that Young Judea remain active, before leaving she found two "girls to take over her leadership chores — Sarah Nathan and Lena Meycrson.

Through the twenties and thirties, items appeared with some regularity in the Jewish newspapers ofthe city, re-garding the existence of Young Judea.'

There are gaps of available information for those two decades, but during the 1940s and 50s, the activities were frequent and easily documented.

Included in the inventory of clippings, photographs and other memorabilia was information about the Youth Commission. Following are selected segments of an article printed in a 1950 Young Judea Bulletin: We now have our own local chapter of the Youth Commission which formed nationally in 1941. Our group is in the charge of Mrs. Ethel Levenson and Mrs, Phineas Wintroub.

The Youth Commission supports four General Zionist. Youth Groups; the first is Young Judea, the second a group not represented in Omaha, the third the Inter-ColTegiate Zionistic Organization of America (1ZFA), and fourth, Junior Hadassah. The commission not only gives moral support, but it also helps with programming, educational activities and financial difficulties...

Addendum The Young Judea groups appear to have prospered here until the very early 50s. Other newly formed groups moved into the youth arena and it 1B believed that with the formation of the B'nai B'rith Girls clubs, older organized groups lost the enthusiasm needed to survive.

By Bert Lewis On the eve of the (50th anniversary of AZA, it sfeins fitting to recount the story of the organization from its humble Winning.

By that I mean before Sam Beber took an interest in developing AZA into a national organization. It may be remembered by some that in 1922 the group was a handful of boys who wanted to have a club — simply because clubs and fraternities were prevalent at the time. At the outset, they didn't seem to have any particular structure in mind, but upon attract — the attention of an interested adult, they began to take shape.

A man named Nathan Mnookin became the leader/ advisor for these kids and from the facts turned up by research, he was a great influence. He was also respected and loved; publicity in old Jewish Press copies verify that fact. A small item in an early 1923 Press reads "Aleph Zadeck Aleph was organized in Omaha in December of 1922 by Nathan Mnookin" (Note spelling of Zadeck). The item continues "the purpose of the club is to cultivate the mental, physical and social education of Jewish boys 18 and over."

In September of 1923 this story in the Jewish Press: "Omaha chapter of Aleph Zadek Aleph installed a new chapter in Kansas City on September 1. Abe Babior and Meyer Freeman (both of whom were among AZA charter members) gave the initiatory degree to nine boys, charter members."

- Apparently nothing much happened during October, but by November 4, 1923, a notice of the regular meeting was seen in the Press. And the following week this interesting account was printed: "Aleph Zidi (?) Aleph are very glad to announce they have secured the services of Mr. Oscar Weinstein as Grand Leader of Omaha Chapter of AZA to take the place of Nathan Mnookin who recently returned to his home in Kansas City. Mr. Weinstein is very well known in Omaha. He is a graduate of Kemper Military Academy."

Included in the item was the information that "Mr. Weinstein will take charge of the basketball team" and also "AZA had charge of the check stand at the B'nai B'rith Carnival and handled it very well. Joe Freeman was in charge."

By the next week, a small item in the Press told of the regular meeting of AZA and mentioned that Sam Singer had been named Captain of the boxing

team. In the 12-27-2.'-! Press, the refrular meeting was noted in addition to mention of a "smoker at which Mr. Beber gave a talk."

Also durin<i the month of December a story appeared which lolrl "'twelve young men organized the Aleph Zadi Aleph Study Class under the direction of Judah Wolfson. Although sponsored by the club, all Jewish boys over Hi are eligible to join. Jewish literature and Jewish History are the subjects of study and the class is composed of Abe Babior, Ben Bernstein, Max Givot, Leonard Herman, Jerome Diamond, Harry Freed, Lester Lapidus, Harry Sidman, Barney Theodore, Sidney Schiffer, Harry Wise and Sam Singer."

In 'the January 24, 1924 edition of the Press, this item appeared: "Mr. Lester Lapidus was elected President of AZA. Other officers were Harry Freed, Vice President; Max Givot, Secretary; Sidney Schiffer, Treasurer; Meyer Freeman, Reporter; and Harry Wide, Sgt.-at-arms. The basketball team won the second league game and the first annual dance will be held on January 27th at the Moose Hall, 28th and Farnam."

And the very important piece of the AZA.puzzle: "during the regular meeting (January 1924) at the JCC, Mr. Sam Beber was announced as the new Aleph Zadi Aleph Advisor."

When the January 31st issue of the Jewish Press appeared, a story told of the successful first anni. versary dance, attended by more than 100 couples.

The winning basketball team was given credit and the Jewish History class mentioned.

On March 9, 1924 the degree team of Omaha Chapter //I went to Lincoln to install AZA chapter //3. The newest chapter boasted 20 charter members. Also present were the Advisory Board members: Sam Beber, Harry Lapidus, Nathan Bernstein, I. F. Goodman and Harry Trustin. Beber was quoted as saying "with the installation of the 3rd chapter, the order of Aleph Zadi Aleph looks forward to rapid growth." He went on to say "present plans include formation of a National Jewish Fraternity for boys between 16 and 21 with the purpose being the emulation of the principles of Americanism and Judaism."

The article went on to state that Louis Miller, chairman of National Boys Week, held a conference with Beber and a general program was adopted for AZA by the Advisory Board. The program was set up to be threefold in nature: recreational, educational and character building activities.- This front page story also carried photographs of Sam Beber and AZA #1 President, Lester Lapidus.

A small item on !\March 13th reported that Lapidus had won first prize in a "Know Omaha contest." sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce. Lapidus was identified as a pupil at Central High School and "active in junior Jewish circles. He is President of Aleph Zaeli Aleph, an organization under the

For example, his tstory told that Judah YMfson had been asked for help in selecting a'name for the Club. He stated that Mr. Wolfson chooo the words Aleph Zadek Aleph. .

A conversation with Mr. Max Givot affirms the. information regarding tho help of Misa Handler and Judah Wolfson. A charter member of the very firct group, Mr. Givot clearly recalled the help provided by both.

Although there are many documented facts taken from Omaha Jewish Frees publicity releases, some of these choice bits of information were not included.

Interviews and memoirs, combined with items found in the 1923 and 1924 Jewish Press issues, together developed into the resulting story of the very beginning of the AZA. sponsorship of B'nai B'rith." This was the first mention of B'nai B'rith in any publicity regarding AZA to that point.

On March 27, 1924 the Press reported that a representative from Des Moines Aleph Aleph Club had come to confer with the Advisory Board. He was initiated into the Omaha Chapter of AZA and was thus able to go home and form a new chapter in Des Moines from the nucleus of the Aleph Aleph Club.

In April the 4th chapter was formed. Mother Chapter planned to send the degree team to initiate thenew members in the Des Moines group. A dance at the Rome Hotel was to defray the expenses of the degree team trip.

The AZA news in the April 10, 1924 issue told of the initiation of six new candidates. Fred Kurtzman, Stanley Levine, William Cherkefsky (of Lincoln) David Beber, Isadore Elewitz and Abe Friedman became the newest members of Mother Chapter.

Another news item a week later ran an update of the coming dance and listed, among the out-of-town guests expected "Nathan Mnookin of Kansas City, founder of the local AZA." Special note should be made of the following, which appeared in the May 1, 1924 issue of the Press: "12 new members will be initiated into Omaha chapter on May 4, 1924." (Two boys initiated in April were listed, in addition to) "David Fellman, David Sher, Arthur Green, Will Horowitz, Ben Koslowsky, Leo Rosencranz, Abe Swartz, Elman Greenberg, Sam Faier and Henry Krasne."

The story went on to say "Omaha now has over 40 members and 15 applications from interested young men."

The Supreme Advisory Council of the Order of AZA for young men was organized at this meeting.

This is the National Governing Body of the order and in charge of all AZA throughout the country."

Charter members of the Supreme Advisory Council were Harry Lapidus of Omaha, S. Silberman of Des Moines, I. F. Goodman, Harry Trustin, Nathan Bernstein and Sam Beber all of Omaha and S. Arenson of Lincoln and Nathan Mnookin of Kansas City.

Sam Beber was quoted as saying "although the order is only a few months old, it has grown and developed rapidly. The organization of AZA chapters is being undertaken and sponsored by B'nai B'rith lodges over the country as part of their Social Service and Big Brother program. The AZA was founded on the theory that a need existed for a national organ^ ization for boys beyond Boy Scout age and too young for adult fraternal order ..."

The rest of the AZA story needs no explanation.

The group has grown to international proportions from that original handful of kids who wanted to "belong to a club."

Youth activities with Orthodox content

By Ellen Gordman What do the Orthodox, Conservative and Reform branches of Judaism have in common? They each sponsor youth groups where teens learn about religion, participate in service projects and develop leadership skills. Just as important, synagogue youth groups provide opportunities for Jewish teens to socialize together. At Beth Israel Synagogue, Kadimah Chapter of the National Conference of Synagogue Youth (NCSY) plans activities for teens within an Orthodox context.

During the year the Kadimah members participate in activities such as selling Shalach Manot baskets at Purim to raise money for important projects, and serving as waiters and waitresses at the synagogue Hanukkah dinner. They conduct special programs for religious observances such as Selichot and Tish'a B'av. And of course, there are social events such as roller skating, bowling and movie parties.

"Kadimah is a fun group that allows Jewish teens to gather together," said Lori Stan, Kadimah advisor. "I have left the focus of the group to the members. I believe that high school students need to make their own decisions. They do all their own planning."

One of the major undertakings for the members this year was the Midwest Regional Leadership Training Seminar in March. Over 85 teens from 11 cities in the region attended the event.

"The weekend went well and everybody had a good time," said Julie Weiner, president of the 20 member Kadimah chapter. "The programs were very good. I thought the weekend was a very educational experience."

The Midwest Region of NCSY covers

a large geographic area including members in Peoria, St. Louis, Kansas City, Wichita and Winnipeg, Canada. Each year the region sponsors two major conventions and two Shabbatons which are held in different cities on a rotating basis. Intercity mini-Shabbatons are conducted by chapters geographically close together.

"Regional events are content oriented with a focus on prayer and study.

There are some social activities for the participants," said Ms. Stan. "Most of the members in the groups are not observant. At regional activities that occur over a weekend they are observant.

"One of the objectives of NCSY is to show the teens how wonderful it is to observe Shabbat. They learn that you don't lose from the things you can't do."

Julie Weiner, a sophomore at Central Kadimah NCSY High School, joined Kadimah partly because of family tradition. Both her sisters, Mindy and Wendy, were active in the youth group and both were regional president.

Julie first became active in junior NCSY for eighth graders. That group no longer exists, but eighth graders join Kadimah and participate in the activities.

"This group is very important to me," said Julie who serves as Midwest Region corresponding secretary.

"Teens can be together and meet other Jewish youth. They can understand their religion better and find out who they are."

The Mother Chapter:

By Diane Wintrpub According to Alan Widman, president of AZA #1 and Cornbelt Region AZA, the Omaha youth groups face two distinct yet related problems. One, get teens interested in joining a group.

Two, keep them active once they've joined.

everybody knows everybody. Other regions have activities to bring them together. There might be ten different cities that get together. But sinie Oniaha is Cornbelt Region, it's not to<> exciting for us to get together. We're always with the same people. We e\en see each other in school."

"There are many activities outside Jewish life that keep the guys from joining AZA," said Alan. "And once we get them to join, it's hard keeping them involved because of those same outside activities."

"Within the chapter we have a close set of friends," said Alan. "But lots of the guys have friends in the other chapters, so we have a healthy rivalry among us. There was a time when the AZA chapters didn't get along, but it's not so bad now. Maybe that's a good point of our small numbers."

Alan, the 17 year-old-son of Stan and Carole Widman, has been active in AZA #1 since day one. He has served as secretary, vice president, and twice as president. •

Alan has tried to delegate more responsibility to chapter members as a means of instilling pride. For example, there might be a chairman and two committee members for a date party.

The whole evening then becomes their responsibility.

"This time I took the job with a different attitude. I knew what had to be done to bring the chapter back up to its potential. The guys had to want to be with each other. AZA is based on fraternity and without that, it won't work."

At the same time that he is president of AZA #1, Alan is also president of AZA .Cornbelt Region.. After the previous president resigned, Alan was appointed to the position in January. He feels that the two positions complement each other and help him to better fulfill his duties to each.

This past February, Alan attended the International Executive Board Meeting in Washington, D.C. All regional presidents in the United States and Canada are invited.

"We worked on the constitution, the budget, discussed new rituals, international convention, and gave reports," said Alan. "It was helpful to meet other regional presidents and hear about other chapters. In Philadelphia, one chapter has 98 members, so naturally everyone wants to be active with so many people around. Our small numbers makes it tough for us. And besides that, we've all grown up together —

By Ellen Gordman To a generation of teenagers he was "Mr. BBYO." During the 1950s and '60s this man spent thousands of hours working to improve the B'nai B'rith Youth program in Omaha. For his dedicated effort, Ediar BBG was named in his honor.

Eddie Rosen, the man who wanted to be a school teacher, but earned his living selling cars, has a deep understanding of teenagers and their needs. Listening to him reminisce one can sense the warmth and caring that helped BBYO flourish.

Looking back, Mr. Rosen acknowledges that life in the '50s and '60s was not like today. There was a different environment then that helped AZA and BBG flourish.

"Parents had better rapport with their children.

The men were back from the service, and we wanted to establish our relationship with our children," Mr. Rosen said. "I got involved with B'nai B'rith because helping youth was very important to me."

Eddie Rosen, a native of Council Bluffs, was a member of AZA #7. He attended the University of Nebraska and graduated from the University of Minnesota.

The purpose of the organization was to engage in Jewish study and charitable work, general Zionistic work s°uch as selling Zionist Shares and stamps. According to author Nathan Bernstein, in The Story of Omaha Jews they were.also expected to do "general propaganda work". • • The'only other fact known, about the group was by 1908 they were 45 in number. .

This club was formed at approximately the same time as its sister group (above) for the purpose of Zionistic work. Both were offshoots of Knights of Zion, an adult Zionist organization, founded in 19021 The first officers were Arthur Marowitz, president and David Brbdkey, secretary.

"I always wanted to work with youth," Mr. Rosen said. "Being active with BBYO gave me the opportunity to help young people." .• ' And work he did. He was chairman of the Cornbelt Regional BBYO Adult Board and served on the B'nai B'rith District //6 BBYO Committee. He and his wife, Sally, spent many evenings chaperoning AZA and BBG events. But he modestly says that there were many other dedicated people who worked for BBYO..

"We had lots of adult support, Earl Siegel, Lou Canar, Sam Epstein, Bess Aronoff, Bess Pollak, (Jraycie Sacks, Ida Sacks and Harold Zelinsky," he said. He thought for a few moments not wanting to leave out any names. "You've really taken me way back. I'd have to check my files for more names.!'

Another reason for the success of BBYO was the geographic situation. The Jewish families lived mostly in the same general area and a majority of the teenagers attended Central High School.

"The teenagers would pour out of Central at the end of the school day and congregate across the street at the JCC. That certainly added to the enthusiasm," Mr. Rosen said.

"Also the Jewish teens were not as integrated into society then as they are today. There was a carry over .of the feelings about what happened to European Jews during the war. The teens along with the adults were more aware of being Jewish."

Another factor was the strength of Cornbelt Region BBYO. There were AZA, BBG or BBYO chapters in Lincoln, Des Moines, Sioux City and Ottumwa. Today there are only five chapters and all are located in Omaha.

"There was more rapport between the teenagers," Mr. Rosen explained. "And there was a keener sense of competition and spirit whether they were participating in athletics, debate or other activities..

"And there were more activities. Do you remember Stage Night where the Omaha chapters wrote their own plays and competed against each other?"

Mr. Rosen devoted such a large amount of his time to BBYO because he thought the experiences were worthwhile. "I thought it was important for teens to have activities with a Jewish identity. In addition,

Mr. Rosen was asked to comment on the condition of BBYO in Omaha today. He is not involved in the day to day activities of BBYO, but knows generally how the program is doing. He said that in many ways the problems that the AZA and BBG chapters face today are no different than they were 25 years ago.

"It has always been easy for B'nai B'rith and parents to give financial support to BBYO," he said. "It has always been harder to get people to give their time. But if adults are going to work with teens they need to have the understanding and the right skills."

Eddie Rosen is still a charming and gracious man.

And it is evident that he looks back on his years as "Mr. BBYO" with fondness and affection.

By Dr. Murray Frost A column on Jewish stamp collecting in the month of April cannot omit the topic of Passover. Since all of the Jewish holidays have been commemorated on Israeli stamps, Passover is on stamps too. Israel's three-stamp set issued in 1972 shows the exodus from Egypt, the baking of matzah, and a Seder scene.

Passover is also important to Christians, and so several nations have issued sets which included stamps one might add to a Judaica collection. For instance Surinam's 1978 Easter set includes a stamp illustrating Exodus 12:13, "And the blood on the houses in which you dwell shall be a sign for you: when I see the blood I will pass over you, so that no plagues will destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt." The set also includes a stamp which the Scott catalog lists as "Passover plate, chalice and bread."

Luckily collectors are free to add or omit any stamps they want from their personal collections, and I decided not to include that one in my collection.

Linkages of Passover and stamps, however, are not limited to the direct subjects noted above. If you use your imagination, it is possible to illustrate several of the Seder songs with stamps. One collector's'attempt to illustrate "Chad Gadya" appeared in a 1979 issue of Judaic Philatelic Journal. And the Spring 1984 issue will include my attempt to illustrate "Ehod Mee Yodaya" ("Who Knows One?"). Incidentally, developing that article increased my knowledge of Judaism as I was forced to read about the 11 stars in Joseph's dream (which is beautifully illustrated in a Raphael painting appearing on a. 1983 Grenada stamp) and the 13 attributes of God. Again, I recommend Judaica stamps as a stimulus to learn about Judaism and Jewish history.

April not only includes Passover and its joyful celebration of our exodus, but also the sad memorialization of the Holocaust. The Warsaw Ghetto revolt began on April 19, 1943, Passover eve. Poland has issued stamps commemorating the revolt on April 19, 1948, 1963, and 1983.

Many nations have issued stamps related to the Holocaust. But the number of these stamps issued in the month of April is surprisingly high. Belgium, Dominican Republic, East Germany, Prance, Italy, and Netherlands as well as Poland and Israel have issued Holocaust-related stamps on 21 occasions. One of the Israel sets includes what I consider to be one of the most beautiful stamp designs in the world. In 1962 it issued a two-stamp set honoring Jewish heroes and martyrs. One stamp features the words "Shma Yisrael" in the form of a flame. The other stamp features six candles representing the six million Jews killed during the Holocaust. I find the symbolism of those two stamps very striking and I have used them to introduce my 36-page stamp exhibit on the Holocaust.

Just the April issues alone can tell of major aspects of Holocaust. The initial Nazi policy was to get the Jews out of Germany. But at the Evian Conference in 1938, only the Dominican Republic agreed to accept Jewish refugees as permanent residents. The settlement at Sosua and some of its inhabitants were depicted on a set issued by the Dominican Republic on April 7, 1960.

Sometimes Christians spoke out or acted against the mal-treatment of the Jews.. A stamp from Netherlands commemorates the 1941 Dockers' Strike which took three days to crush arid which erupted when 400 Jews were arrested after a clash between Jews and Nazis. • Monuments at several concentration camps have been featured on stamps issued in April. A set issued

by Poland on April 3, 1962 pictured the memorials at Treblinka and Maidenek; Auschwitz was also memorialized in that set and by an issue on April 10, 1967. A set issued by East Germany on April 25,1957 depicted the monument at Ravensbruck, the camp for women. The monument at the Breendonk camp in Belgium was noted by a stamp issued by Belgium on April 7, 1979.

The most striking design on a stamp related to the concentration camps is the one depicting "Death" spraying Cyclon B gas at Maidenek (issued by Poland on April 29, 1946). , Several stamps from France note the camps, hut several also feature heroes of the Resistance (e.g.

Jacques Bingen is on a stamp issued April 19, 1958).

Victims of the Holocaust have appeared on stamps from several nations. On April 25, 1980 Netherlands issued a stamp honoring Anne Frank (she also appeared on a German stamp).

Finally the rebuilding after the Holocaust is illustrated by a West Berlin stamp issued on April 19, 1966 showing the hew Jewish Community Center in Berlin which used the portal from one of the synagogues destroyed on Krystalnacht.

Whether it be the joy of Passover or the tragedy of the Holocaust, a Jewish stamp collection can be a key to discovering your heritage.

By Diane Wintroub By the time a teenager reaches his or her last year of high school, an acute case of "Senioritis" begins to afflict the victim. Symptoms evidence themselves in remarks such as "Go away, I'm a Senior!" "Grades don't matter anymore, I'm a Senior!" "I don't wanna get involved, I'm a Senior!"

Jeff Plotkin does not display any symptoms of Senioritis. In October of 1983, first semester of his senior year, Jeff was elected president of Chaim Weizmann AZA #1510.

"I ran because Weizmann was having trouble finding good leadership," Jeff said. "Iliad served as treasurer my junior year and enjoyed being involved.

Why not run for president? I could do a good job I thought."

Jeff, the 18 year old son of Gary and Karen Plotkin, said the most difficult part of his job is getting members and keeping them jnvolved.

"All of the groups in town seem to be having trouble keeping members active and interested. There are so many other things for kids to do.

"Weizmann has 20 members and maybe 12 of them are really active. I don't think the other eight could care less. Most of our members are underclassmen which is bad because we don't have enough drivers, but it could turn out to be good if the younger guys stay active as upperclassmen. Weizmann could be a stronger club."

There are six young men in Weizmann's freshman class. A few sincerely wanted to join, said Jeff. The others probably joined for the heck of it.

"I don't think Weizmann is the only group having trouble getting people involved. All of the other youth groups have had a hard time or are beginning to. And I have a bad feeling that it is going to get worse before it gets better — if it gets better. People are interested,

Building more traditional values

By Margie Gutnik Ours was not a traditional or an observant Jewish family. As children we always knew we were Jewish but we were what my parents would refer to as "assimilated Jews."

Let me explain: I never saw my mother light the Shabbat candles, but we stayed home from school and went to Temple on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. We had our own traditions: we lit the candles on the Hanukkah menorah and exchanged gifts December 25th in front of the tree in our living room. We colored eggs and hunted for them in our backyard. Easter morning we got baskets of chocolate, while later the same month the family prepared for and celebrated together the Passover Seder.

I am raising my own three daughters differently than I was raised, more observant and with none of the trappings of the Christian holidays my family jumbled into our life.

It is because of my memories of the Passover Seders of my childhood that I want a Jewish home and life for my children. Unlike any other holiday observance, those Passover Seders brought into my childhood home deep feelings of family and Jewish tradition that endure in my heart to this day. It is this feeling and those memories that I would love my daughters to know. But times have changed and their lives are different now than they were for my sister, my brother and me. The Passover Seders that my husband, Bruce, and I create for our daughters cannot hold the same memories.

All the time I was growing up, my grandparents lived with us. My aunts, uncles and cousins were not far away.

At Passover, even the shopping was a family affair. My grandmother insisted that my mother and Aunt Gert take her to Harry Schenberg's market and my sister Adria and I got to go along.

Schenberg's was not our weekly neighborhood grocery and Adria and I were free to explore â&#x20AC;&#x201D; as long as we stayed together. This was a magical place with

all sorts of products Kosher for Passover. I remember the sesame candies, sweet and chewy, too sticky for Adria's braces; the half-moon fruit slices and the boxes of Barton's candy that seemed to appear at no other time of year.

After our shopping trip, it seemed every corner of our house had grocery bags full of boxes of matzos, bottles of wine, cans and jars of everything imaginable. The screened porch held the overflow items our refrigerator couldn't. Now the preparations would begin.

Aunt Gert's job was to^grate the horseradish and complain that it needed no borscht to color it as she'd grated her knuckles right along with the horseradish root.

My mother meanwhile assisted my grandmother in grinding the carp and buffalo and putting the gefilte fish on to boil, then assembling the items for soup stock and getting it on the stove.

By the time Adria and I came home from school for lunch, the kitchen windows were fogged and the humidity was high enough to frizz my hair. How the house smelled! Our mouths watered thinking about the firm chewy knadelich. Of course, they did not float in the soup â&#x20AC;&#x201D; until I reached adulthood I was never aware of the fact that that was what matzo balls were supposed to do.

I also never remember the chicken soup my grandmother made being anything other than the perfect environment for the golden knadelich to rest in. No one was ever really interested in the soup, and most of it was returned to the kitchen minus the matzo balls.

Days of shopping, cooking and cleaning silver was behind us and finally the night of the Seder came. If I close my eyes, I can still see the old wine-stained, grey Union Hagaddahs sitting atop the Indian Tree china. This is the one time of the year I remember my grandmother covering her head with a lacy black shawl and silently moving her lips as she stood "beiisching" the candles.

I can see my grandfather leading the

Seder leaning on the bedroom pillows and hear my father and Uncle Clarence reciting the ten plagues dipping their fingers into the wine.

The sweet watered-down wine that was in the glasses of the children remains a special memory. My grandmother's crystal stemware that held that wine-water mixture came out of the breakfront only on Passover and no other time of the year. That goldrimmed crystal stemware now sits in my dining room and holds the wateredwine my daughters drink at their Passover Seder. Now my family is gone and those glasses are the only tangible legacy of the Seders of my childhood that I can pass on to my children.

Times have changed and lives are different now than they were in my youth.

It is not unusual these days for families to be isolated by many miles. Bruce's parents live in St. Louis and with Seder often falling in the middle of a work week, it hasn't been possible for them to come to Omaha. Our brothers and sisters are all scattered throughout the country as well. Our daughters have cousins they know only through photos.

It is impossible for my husband and me to duplicate for our daughters the family gatherings at holiday time that made Judaism in my childhood home so special. What we are doing however, is creating for our own children experiences that will one day become important memories in their lives. We are establishing traditions of our own that

the children know and have come to expect.

Although it is easier not to, I take the girls grocery shopping when I buy my Passover items. They help set the table, choose the menu and prepare the food. Even when we have no guests for our Seder we get dressed up and set the dining room table with china, silver and my grandmother's crystal stemware.

We do it because Passover is a special time and we are a family. Often we are invited to join with others for their Seder. To join friends and their parents, grandparents, brothers and sisters is an opportunity for my children to be part of multigenerational family Seder and that is a delight.

My children, as they grow older, probably won't feel that they have missed out on anything because living away from their extended family is all they have ever known. Grandma and Grandpa living in our house would seem quite strange, for they are people who write letters, arrive on airplanes and call long distance.

Because our daughters cannot have what we once had and we wish they could, we strive harder to bring our Judaism into our home than my parents did. It is much harder to create such an environment when it is only Mom and Dad there to create it â&#x20AC;&#x201D; but maybe that is better for Bruce and me. Maybe our children are causing us to look harder at our Judaism at just such a time as Passover and realize how very precious our legacy is to them.

Growing program is proof of OTYG success

By Ellen Gordman Helping high school students establish identities as Reform Jews, learn to be part of a Jewish society and develop leadership skills are three of the goals of the Omaha Temple Youth Group. OTYG, affiliated with the National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY), is sponsored by Temple Israel.

The three main program areas for OTYG are religious, social action and social. Religious programs acquaint members with aspects of Reform Judaism as well as the Orthodox and Conservative movements.

Social action focuses on topical subjects such as poverty, nuclear disarmament and aging in the 80s. Social activities enable the members to interact with Jewish teens.

Currently, OTYG has 68 members. Many of the members also belong to an AZA or BBG chapter.

About 15 percent of the member's families are not affiliated with Temple Israel.

"When Steve and I became advisors four years ago there were 24 members," said Michelle Dloogoff. "We have attracted more members recently because we have a well-rounded program planned and run by the teens."

Proof of the success of the OTYG program is illustrated by its being named a recipient of the Kovod Award on a regular basis. This award is given annually to those NFTY groups who meet requirements in the three main program areas.

OTYG is part of the Missouri Valley Federation of Temple Youth (MoFTY). This region encompasses a large geographic area in the Midwest which stretches from Denver, Colorado to Champaign, Illinois. To facilitate programming the region is divided into two sub-regions. Western includes Denver, Omaha, Kansas City, Sioux City, Des Moines, Wichita, Topeka, , Lincoln and Springfield, Missouri. SLID includes St. Louis, Peoria, Champaign, Cedar Rapids and Decatur and Springfield, Illinois.

• Several events are held each year to enable the members in the region to meet for learning experiences combined with social activities. Winter Convention, the largest event, is held in different cities on a rotating basis. M-Toot is conducted each August at Camp Sabra in the Lake of the Ozarks area. The week long event concentrates on one aspect of Judaism along with leadership training.

Senior Function is held each fall at a university campus. This gives members an opportunity to see what they can expect as Jewish college students. During Social Action Weekend participants study one topic indepth such as poverty or aging. Regional officers are elected at Spring delegates. And in addition, intercity functions are held between geographically close cities.

Susan Simon, a junior at Westside High School, is president of OTYG. She joined the group because her

sister and cousin were involved and got her interested. Susan became a member to meet other Jewish teens and to have fun. In the past three years she has learned that OTYG has much to offer its members.

"I believe it is really important for Jewish teens to belong to a Jewish youth group," Susan said. "They learn how to grow as Jews. .i ''I like the social action programs where we study subjects such as poverty. And we have talked about Reform, Conservative and Orthodox Judaism. You learn so much without even knowing you are learning."

Advisors are the glue that helps keep youth groups together. Acting as the OTYG glue for the past four years have been Steve and Michelle Dloogoff. They became active before their oldest daughter was even eligible for membership.

"Working with teens is the most rewarding volunteer work," said Steve Dloogoff. "It is interesting to watch the development process in teens, how they learn to think and become responsible adults.

"Fifty percent of being an advisor is going to meetings. The other 50 percent is being there for the teens.

Sometimes they need an adult other than their parents to talk to."

OTYG is fortunate to also receive help from other organizations at Temple Israel. Support is available whether the group is organizing a convention or needs financial aid.

port us at all times in whatever way we ask them," said Mrs. Dloogoff..

By participating in OTYG, teenagers are learning to become responsible Reform Jews and leaders for the Jewish community of the future. And as Michelle Dloogoff said "It's fun to work with the OTYG members. They are a unique bunch of people."

Another "Munich" in the Middle East?

A critical analysis by Rabbi Dr. Y. Kemelman, head of the Sydney Beth Din, of the Australian Government's tilt in policy against Israel, as indicated by its Minister for "Foreign Affairs, Mr. Bill Hayden, during his recent visit in Israel.

Imagine for a moment the Foreign Minister of a friendly country is visiting Australia and receiving an abundance of courtesy and hospitality. The Prime Minister spends with him a full two houre in private talks and the Defence Minister leaves his headquarters to meet him at the particular city of his choice.

Then the foreign diplomat stands up and criticizes the policies of the host government and proposes that most of West Australia should be ceded to the aborigines to satisfy their "legitimate national rights".

Surely that would1 fall upon us like a bombshell.

Unfortunately, that is what our Foreign Minister has done while visiting a most friendly State — Israel.

His declaration that the Palestinians are entitled to their own State shocked many in Israel, according to the media reports, as well as here in Australia.

It must be pointed out that in reality this is not a true allegory, for the aborigines are peaceful, lawabiding citizens who never aimed to destroy or even harm the white Australian population. On the other hand, the P.L.O's Palestinian Covenant clearly spells out its aim to liquidate the State of Israel and replace it with a Palestinian State.

The power of oiL^ind money It has become a matter of international procedure for politicians, whose countries crave for oil or trade deals with the rich Arab countries, to issue a declaration of appeasement at the expense of Israel, about "the right of the Palestinian for self determination".

Nobody demands that France should return to GerJ many Alsace-Lorraine with its German speaking population; and that Italy should return Southern Tyrol to Austria; the United States to hand over Texas to Mexico; China to release Tibet and the Soviet Union to relinquish Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and large parts of Poland, Czechoslovakia, Rumania and Japanese territories. The Soviet Union alone annexed close to 200,000 square miles of European territory with a pre-war population of 22 million.

The Soviet authorities have contended that this massive territorial annexation was justified on the grounds of the U.S.S.R's security" requirements, although the threat of aggression no longer exists. Israel's Arab neighbors, on the other hand, have not given up their threat to her security, indeed to her very existence. Would it be unrealistic to suppose that Israel's security requirements are any less urgent, or any less evident than those of the Soviet Union? Yet Israel is the only nation required to give up all territory acquired in a war of self-defense, while allother nations are allowed, by international law, to keep territories acquired in wars of aggression.

Our Prime Minister, Mr. Bob Hawke, gaye expression to this.reality when, in June, 1977, he dismissed "the armchair experts, whether in Washington or Canberra, who expected Israel to accept pre-1967 borders, when Jordanian territory was only 13 miles from the heart of Tel Aviv, and which would almost certainly have meant her destruction in the 1973 war".

"Self determination" has become famous as an international principle only for the Palestianians.

What about the Kurds, Armenians, Basques, Corsicans, Scots, Croatians, Ukranians, the French in Canada and the eight million Mexicans in the United States? There is hardly a single country which could not be disrupted to the point of fragmentation by the application of "self determination" as a universal rule.

P.L.O's military and political subversion of Lebano.n has destroyed the most peaceful and prosperous country in the Middle East. It provides us with a complete picture of what Israel's lot would be if the hopes of those seeking territorial concessions were fulfilled and Israel transferred significant strategical areas to any Arab regime. All those states, among them some of the West, that have given the P.L.O. credibility and recognition, bear at least partial responsibility for the agony of the mutilated Lebanon.

Have we any grounds for doubting that this Arab people which is capable of persisting with a blood bath in the Lebanon, not for the purpose of existing, nor even under the pretext of defence, but with the aim of ensuring a certain Muslim domination there, . will not; see the truncated Jewish State as a lamb that is finally ready for the slaughter?

Mr. Hayden is no doubt aware that before Hitler came to power no one took seriously his threats to exterminate the Jewish people. The world learned too late that Hitler meant every word he had pronounced

Reflections of some former teens

By Ellen Gordman They were the teenagers of the past who have become.the adults of today. Ask them about their ex-i "periences in youth groups and you hear phrases such as "developed my leadership ability", "created positive feelings for Judaism", "I made life long friends."

"In retrospect AZA had a tremendous influence on my life," said Marshall Kushner who was a member of AZA jf'A in Lincoln, Nebraska during the late 1940s.

"AZA supported my feelings of Judaism and helped me to mature socially. I have always felt that I owe AZA for developing my interest in the welfare of the Jewish community."

Echoing those sentiments is Jody Rice Malashock who was president of Cornbelt Region BBG in 197071. "BBG was the most important part of my high school years. I have a lot of fond memories of my experiences."

A common thread running through the experiences of youth group members was the development of positive feelings toward Judaism.

"I learned more about my religion," said Hariett Leffak Klopper who was active in NCSY in Minneapolis. "All the activities functioned around the synagogue. And we attended Friday night and Saturday morning services together.'"

John Spitzer, rabbi of Temple Israel in Canton, Ohio, discovered his future occupation when he was active in NFTY. "I gained an appreciation for Jewish life along with a spiritual growth. Being in NFTY gave me maturity, independence and leadership confidence. For seven or eight years I was a regional advisor. I wanted to give back to the youth group because I had gained so much from it."

One of the goals of youth groups is to develop leadership abilities in teenagers. Each one of the ten people interviewed for this article have been active volunteers in Jewish communal life.

"I served as president of the Missouri Valley Federation of Temple Youth," said Gary Kaplan who is presently secretary of Temple Israel. "I learned about organizations and sitting on boards through my participation in youth groups."

Ed Fried was president of Emtza Region of USY during 1976-77. Since then he has stayed involved in Jewish activities. "I have an attachment to Judaism.

I had an opportunity to. give something back to a group that I had gotten something out of."

When Mr. Fried attended college in Lincoln he was an advisor to USY. White a student at San Diego State University he was a synagogue youth director with responsibility for programs for sixth graders to senior high school students. ' Several of the people interviewed have children who now are members of youth groups. The consensus is that today's youth movement in Omaha is not as strong as it was in the 1950s and '60s.

"BBG was much stronger then," said Maxine Zweiback Kirshenbaum. "One of the reasons is that there weren't all of the activities that are now available for teens to participate in."

No matter what the alphabet soup name, AZA, BBG, NCSY, OTYG, USY, former members all look back fondly on their youth group experiences. The benefits are summed up by two people, one who was active in NCSY over 20 years ago and one who grad-

uated from high school in 1980.

"Synagogue youth groups were part of growing up," said Sheila Ruderman Tomps who was a member of Kadimah Chapter of NCSY in 1958-62. "I really got a lot from the program socially. Participation in youth group reinforced my Judaism. I, made lasting friendships and still correspond with many of the people I met."

"I learned how to be a leader," said Corey Kirshenbaum who was active in USY during 1976-80. He was president of Bilu Chapter for two years and served as Emtza Region second vice-president.

"Being in USY was a good experience for me. My g^oal is to some day work with teams in USY. It is a good organization. I want it to be strong and go on for many years."

One final word from Edward Zelinsky who was AZA International President in 1967-68 and who has been an Alderman in New Haven since 1973.

"All the lessons I learned about politics and bureaucracy I learned while in AZA. AZA gave me an opportunity to have responsibility and be an adult. I , think AZA is a great benefit for teens."

When B'nai B'rith Women became a national organization in 1940, they adopted the girls aa a national responsibility. BBG became a national organization in 1944. . That was also the year the Supreme Advisory Council of AZA was dissolved, to be succeeded by the BB Youth Commission. This BBYC was a now policy-making body of inen, women and youth. AZA and BBG now began to operate under the canopy of a federation known as the BBYO, a group which-was to become the largest Jewish youth organization, in the world.. .

Locally, BBG was not known until 1953. At that time, B'nai.B'rith Women approached a;group of girls who belonged to a club called Deblca Debs, according to the recollections of one former member. She remembers being asked to join a new group being founded, which

would have national affiliation.

A notice in the Jcwisii Press of June 26,1953 reads: "B'nai B'rith Women of Omaha will liO3t a tea on June 28 at the home of Mrs. Stanley Shapiro. Girla from 14 to 19 are invited to come and learn about joining a BB girls group".

Another item appeared in the Spvnah Pceas on Aug. 8 of that year, stating the BB girls would meet on Sept.

2 at the Jewish Community C°nter to formally organize. •' Through the following years, more groups were formed and by 1965 there were seven BBYO chapters here.

Eleanor Roosevelt BB Girls, Ediar, Debka Debs, Nor Tamid and Rohanue were .to ba among those ultimately counted.

• In this year of 1984, in Omaha, Nebraska, there are1 presently three AZA chapters; AZA 1, AZA 100 and AZA 1510. In addition to these boys groups, there are only two BBG clubs, Ediar and M. Z. Yoshanah.

Marlen was working at the Devereaux school for retarded persons near our home in Goleta, California.

She was quite upset about their focus on Christian holidays while ignoring others'-religious holidays. She was determined to invite some of the Jewish students to our Seder — especially since several of them expressed a yearning for a Jewish experience.

We maintained our tradition of having the first Seder reserved for our own family. But for the second Seder Marlen brought three of the residents of Devereaux to our home. Two were young men (around 20) and the other was a young woman of 25.

WASHINGTON — Teenage leaders of the B'nai B'rith Youth Organization have declared war on drunken drivers.

Representing BBYO from Omaha were Alan Widrnun and Andie Gordman.

Gathered in Washington for the annual midwinter meeting of the organization's International Executive Board, some 90 members, representing 36 regions in the United States and Canada, voted to adopt a new international program aimed at removing from the streets and highways drivers who are under the influence of alcohol.

In a program Called B'nai B'rith Against Drunk Driving (BBADD), the young Jewish leaders called for strengthening of laws on and the education of communities on drunk driving.

Freshmen discuss finding the right college

By Susie Fellman When the weather turns nice and thoughts turn to daydreams of vacations, some of the daydreams of students are of colleges, those strange, new places we will be entering in the fall.

Although schools may seem foreign to incoming freshrr)en, this year's freshmen are old pros at the college scene, and a few of them recently got together with Margo Riekes to discuss the little things that all add up to choosing a school.

The participants stressed that by visiting a campus, one could get a feel for the school by staying overnight and attending classes the next day, and by

3. Melt the margarine over medium heat in a 9" frying pan. Add the egg and matzo mixture. Fry until the underside of the egg mixture is completely set.

Makes 2-4 servings.

CARROT CANDY 1 lb. carrots 1-2 tsp. ginger 1 lb. (2V4 C) sugar juice of V4 lemon chopped nuts Grate carrots (fine grater), drain off some juice.

Mix sugar in, boil, add lemon juice. Boil slowly until very thick (leaves side of pan) about 1V4 hours.

Remove from stove, add chopped nuts and ginger.

Wet wooden board, spread mix on it and sprinkle with nuts. Let cool to harden (2 days). Cut turn and harden other side (2 days).

PASSOVER SHERBET 1 pkg. raspberry or strawberry flavored gelatin, Kosher for Passover.

1 cup sugar 2 cups water juice of 1 lemon juice of % orange 1 quart fresh raspberries or strawberries 2 unbeaten egg whites Cook sugar.and water together 5 minutes. Cool slightly and add gelatin to dissolve thoroughly. Refrigerate until it just begins to thicken. Run carefully washed and hulled berries through a sieve; add juices and add to the gelatin. Pour into freezing tray and freeze until very firm. In the meantime, chill beaters and bowl in refrigerator. Remove frozen mixture to large bowl of mixer, which was chilled in the refrigerator (cut into chunks for easier mixing) together

Another new problem facing students is budgeting money, especially for the phone bill. Facing their financial problems, the students made another list of suggestions to help others, or themselves, in the future. 1) Write down everything money was spent on.

2) Try to do without for as long as possible. 3) Get rid of the, phone, or at least only allow one long distance call per week at a reduced rate, or sign up for MCI or SPRINT. 4) Get money from home every two weeks rather than once a month.

As for being prepared for college academically, most agreed that they were.

"It helped to take the most difficult courses in high school, the eastern prep students were more wellrounded, but definitely not more prepared," Randi Gordman said.

Marcy Frost summed up the feelings of others when she said "I was well prepared in almost everything except study habits."

Entrance exams for colleges are an important factor in admissions, and the panel advised taking both the SAT and ACT as early as possible and as many times as possible to take advantage of the best possible score. They also recommended taking the AP tests in high school if offered.

The Jewish life on campus varies from school to school, but all students were aware, if not involved, with part of the Jewish atmosphere. Hillel is present on most major campuses around the country.

"It's nice to have Hillel when you need a Jewish atmosphere," Janice Aranow said. One way of ensuring association with other Jewish kids on campus is to ask for a Jewish roommate, one panelist suggested.

Other methods include checking the B'nai B'rith catalogue, or attending a local synagogue for high holiday services.

1 teaspoon grated lemon rind 1 tablespoon grated orange rind 1 tablespoon lemon juice 2 unbeaten egg whites Combine sugar, gelatin and salt in saucepan. Add juice and water and cook over medium heat, stirring until sugar and gelatin are dissolved. Add rinds. Cool, then freeze and proceed as above.

BEEF TZIMMES 5 large carrots 1 tsp. salt 5 medium whole Vis cup sugar or honey potatoes 2 T. chicken fat or 3 medium sweet shortening potatoes 2 T. potato starch 2.xh to 3 lbs. beef brisket Peel and slice carrots. Pare and cut sweet potatoes and potatoes in 1" rounds. Brown meat on all sides.

Add the vegetables, salt and sugar or honey. Add enough cold water to cover ingredients. Bring to a boil over moderate heat. Remove cover and skim. Let cook uncovered for 2Vi to 3 hours, at a simmer. Do not stir. Shake pot occasionally to prevent sticking.

If necessary, water may be added. When liquid has been reduced - to half, brown the potato starch in melted shortening; stir in xh cup of liquid from pot to make the gravy smooth. Add to tzimmes. Turn tzimmes into casserole and bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes, until brown.

' 3 apples 2 cups semiSry white 3 pears wine 2 seedless oranges 1 cup orange juice l 1 pint fresh /z cup apple juice strawberries 2 sticks cinnamon •/2 cup raisins Peel fruit. Quarter and core apples and pearB; section oranges. Place in glass, stainless steel or enamel casserole or large pot. Combine juices and wine, add raisins and cinnamon; pour over fruit. Bring to a boil and simmer 15 minutes, covered. Add strawberries; simmer 2 more minutes. Serve warm or chilled, plain or, for calorie ignorers, over cake. Sprinkle with sliced or chopped nuts, if desired.

MOCK OATMEAL COOKIES 2 cups matzo meal 1 teaspoon cinnamon l 2 cups matzo farfel h teaspoon salt IV2 cups sugar % cup oil 1 cup raisins 4 eggs 1 cup chopped nuts Combine dry ingredients. Beat in eggs and oil. Stir in raisins and nuts. Drop by teaspoon on a greased cookie sheet. Bake in 350 degree oven about 12-15 minutes. Yield: about 4 dozen cookies.

MARMALADE BEETS •4 cups cooked, sliced 3 tablespoons pareve beets, drained margarine 2 tablespoons lemon V6 teaspoon salt juice Vu teaspoon ginger 1 tablespoon potato dash pepper starch ' x h cup orange marmalade FARFEL PANCAKES Mix lemon juice with potato starch in a saucepan..

Pour 1 cup water over 2 cups farfel. Add 2 well- Add .marmalade and margarine. Heat, stirring conbeaten eggs, 1 teaspoon salt and mix well. stantly, until marmalade and margarine melt. Add Fry on well-greased hot skillet. Serve with sugar or seasonings and beets. Stir and heat about 5 minutes preserves. Serves about 4. . or until beets are well coated. Serves 4 to 6.

The children were helping their mama prepare The hundreds of details, each done with great care.

The house was scrubbed clean, the chometz was gone; Both mama and her helpers were tired and wan.

The Passover dishes had been brought out of storage And the kinder were practicing the afikoman forage.

All of a sudden mama cried out 'vay is meer" ..

Causing each of her family to tremble with fear.

What's wrong? What happened?Why did you say that?

Mama yelled loudly "I just kashered the cat!" â&#x20AC;˘ "You kashered the cat? Ma, come on and be serious, But she yelled and she hollered like she was delirious.

When they finally learned why the shrying got faster It turned out to be the year's Passover disaster.

Mama was boiling the water to make her gefilte fish, when The cat gave a jump, missed her footing and swish!

It fell into the teppel with such screaming and yowling that You couldn't tell which was Mama and which was the cat!

So that's how it all happened, kashering the kahtz; The night that they thought their poor mama would plotz.

But somehow they managed to make everything alright So don't worry, zie gezunt, happy Pesach and goodnight.

Eric Tatelman is the president of this BBYO boys group, and his father, Maynard, is co-advisor with Justin Cooper.

The senior member of the Tatelman family, a na*~ tive of Omaha, served as president of this very same' chapter in the 1940s.

Those were the good old days, Mr. Tatelman recalled when Al Frank and Harold Zolinsky were advisors.

"The big difference between the old AZA group and my son's group is that we were less affluent because we had to work after school and we didn't have as much time for socializing as the kids today."

"Now, wait a minute dad, I work as a part time disc jockey and several of our members also work," piped Eric.

"We used to take a bus or a streetcar to get to the old JCC, while you fellows have access to cars and you don't have any transportation problems," countered dad.

"I hear about transportation problems a lot as a reason for not attending meetings," quipped son.

Although the banter between Eric and his dad livened up the interview, most of their comments were similar in praise of AZA and the long-lasting friendships enjoyed by the members, They pointed to the blending of all Jewish community youth regardless of synagogue affiliation or degree of orthodoxy in religious practices.

They described their club opportunity as a satisfactory way of getting involved with the community and bringing forth a good Jewish attitude toward their relationships.

The Tatelman family is heavily involved in AZA; son, Scott, now at the University of Kansas, also was a. member.

"We never had any major problems and we have enjoyed every aspect of AZA over the years was the concurrent message expressed by both the Tatelmans.

"There's lots of opportunities for friends, leadership, personal education and meeting other members at conventions," said Eric.

"I spend about 3-4 hours a week in being an advisor and it's a responsibility that 1 really enjoy . . . the biggest part of my job is answering the telephone and taking messages — for Eric."

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. — The word leadership has taken on new meaning for Kevin M. Saltzman of Omaha Burke High School who attended the four-day national Century III Leaders Conference in Colonial Williamsburg, Va., March 2-5.

Saltzman was one of 102 outstanding high school leaders who gathered to learn more about what makes great leaders, debate some of the challenges facing America in its third century, arid vie for a $10,000 scholarship.

The students heard first-hand what it is like to deal with problems on a national and international scale as former President Gerald R. Ford addressed the opening night dinner* And, Frank Pace, Jr., president of the National Executive Service Corps., shared his perspectives on leadership with them during several special seminars.

Pace has served under every President since Harry Truman through appointments to special Presidential Commissions and positions such as U.S. Secretary of the Army.

The national conference is the culmination of a six-month selection process to find and honor the top high schpol leaders in each state. Saltzman and Lisa K. Johnston, a senior at Thedford Public High School in Thedford, represented Nebraska at the conference, and each received a $1,500 scholarship as a state winner.

Thomas Liriinger of Ashland, Oregon, was selected as the 1984 national Century III Leader during the conference and was awarded a $10,000 scholarship.

Now in its ninth year, Century III Leaders is administered by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) and funded by the Shell Companies Foundation.

President Ford emphasized four principles in challenging the students to prepare for their roles as future leaders.

"There is no magic formula that guarantees a leader, but I would offer these principles to help get you there," he said. "Establish a goal as early as possible in your lifetime. Dream a little .... you might do better than you expect. Organize your future . . . know what you want to do. Develop self-discipline . . . finish what you start and don't get discouraged. And finally, value good health. Don't let yourself get caught up in the use of foreign substances that have ruined so many lives."

The former President told them he is absolutely confident that when the reins of government are turned over to their generation that America will be well served,

Speaking from a private-sector viewpoint, Shell Oil Company President John Bookout encouraged the student leaders to build on the ideals that have made America great.

"You're moving ahead fast with strength you've gained from a system that is growing stronger. I hope that, as you mature in leadership, you'll remember the system that helped you get it — and that you'll help lead it to even greater strength for those who follow you," Mr. Bookout said.

"Keep your nerve, cherish the truth, push against your limits," he advised, "and you'll be the leaders who will keep democracy working."

Mr. Pace, speaking during a leadership training seminar, reminded the students that the instinct for leadership carries with it the responsibility to develop a capacity for moral leadership.

"Some people want to be leaders to have power . . . some people want to be leaders to have fame . . . and some to acquire money," said Mr. Pace. "The real reason to be a leader is to increase your capacity to contribute."

The student leaders put their skills into action by developing recommendations on challenges facing our nation, including: America's economy, education, international security, government and human ' services, the environment, and technology and values.

Following an open debate on the recommendations in an old-fashioned town meeting, the students arrived at a consensus opinion and forwarded their ideas to the Reagan Administration through Secretary of Education Terrel H. Bell.

The selection process for Century III Leaders begins each October at the local high school level and involves an estimated 350,000 seniors nationwide.

School winners advance to the state level to vie for scholarships and the opportunity to attend the Williamsburg conference.

Century III Leaders are chosen on the basis of leadership abilities, school and community involvement, and an awareness of current events. The program encourages young people to think not only about the problems they will face as future leaders but also how those problems should be solved. As a demonstration of his/her analytical and creative thinking, each student leader prepares a "Projection for Innovative Leadership" on a particular challenge facing America, and recommends a course of action. ^ All Williamsburg participants also are eligible to participate in the Century III Leaders alumni program which offers post-graduate grants.

A little parental pressure

"They" refers to Ellen and Robert Gordman - parents.

"Me" in this case describes daughter Andrea Gordman.

"It" is the initial participation in the B'nai B'rith Youth Program by Andrea.

Some three years have passed since Andrea took that first plunge into membership at M.Z. Yoshanah BBG 2053 and wow, how attitudes have changed.

"My parents were very concerned about me and they wanted to make certain that I socialized with other Jewish kids . . . they didn't give me a choice, I joined BBG." From this less than grand beginning, Andrea took hold with the B'nai B'rith movement and skyrocketed to national prominence.

From freshman treasurer, she zoomed through chapter offices to president of the Cornbelt Region and just recently became BBG international sh'licha.

A student at Burke High School, she already is planning for August elections when she will vie for Mazkirah, the third highest office in the movement.

What next, Andrea? President, perhaps?

"Well, first I'm going to graduate from high school six months early and I'm going to use that free time to develop my interests and decide on a career goal.

"I'll be looking for a job, or volunteer work to help me decide, I like working with people and the idea of developing new programs."

She said that once some unresolved questions find answers she may elect to run for the international presidency.

From a point where "They made me do it" to perhaps shooting for the top elective office is a story of enjoyment, excitement, and 100 per cent enthusiasm.

"My first summer at Leadership Training Conference in Beber Camp in Wisconsin, was just incredible."

In December of 1920; and article, ran in the Jewish press calling for "new members for the recently organized Boy Scout troup". The story announced that the group met weekly, and held hikes at least monthly. D. M. Newman was Scoutmaster and Bob Kooper and Reuben Brown were the assistants. Scouts at that time were: Sam Zager, Fred Kurzman, Sam Marcus, Oscar Kosberg.Alexander Finkenstein, David Wohlner, Eddie Brodkey, Sam Bender, Phillip Mandel, Meyer Braude, Fred Brodkey, Gilbert Rosenbaum, Harry Grossman, David Forman, Dyman Goldman, Max Reikes, Israel Sternhill.

Andrea Gordman — onward and upward in BBG. It was at this session that she met kids from all over the country and became the recipient of vast amounts of useful and challenging information.

After this exposure, Andrea pursued responsibility within the chapter and went on to expand her horizons.

"Marcy Frost encouraged me to run for regional sh'licha, and I've been running for office ever since."

Andrea's responsibilities as international sh'licha will include informing the 36 North American Regions and three overseas districts about the living conditions of oppressed Jewry throughout the world.

"I'll be putting out a newsletter once a month giving information and programming ideas." ' She explained that two activities already in motion call for members to write letters of protest to foreign governments and letters of encouragement to "adopted" teenagers and prisoners of conscience.

Another major project, she said, will be done in association with her male counterpart, Howard Cohn of Newcastle, PA, "We're going to prepare a slide show for the various regions to utilize and we hope to premiere this project in the summer at B'nai B'rith Camp in Starlight, PA." Another new project will be the development of a pen pal program which hopefully will involve members from all 36 'regions and our three overseas districts, Andrea added.

"I've learned so much in BBG, it's so very important to my Jewish identity," said Andrea.

"I don't know what I would have been doing now had it not been for BBG . . .

I'm proud to identify myself as a Jew and to tell Jews throughout the world that I care about them.

"Don't put this into the story, but my parents were absolutely right, BBG has changed my life."

USY — a small but committed group

By Ellen Gordman "Learn the great art of being small" wrote Joseph Hayyim Brenner, Hebrew poet and novelist. This idea could apply to Bilu Chapter of the United Synagogue Youth. With a membership roster of 12, the chapter is the smallest of the synagogue youth groups.

"Most of the teenagers go to BBYO," said Ruth Mitchell who is co-president with Michelle Ahramson. "We've tried to get more members. The small membership doesn't bother me as long as everyone is active."

The program of USY, which lias chapters throughout the United States and Canada, includes religious, cultural, community service and social activities. The motto of Emtza Region is "to learn, to teach, to do".

"We think USY is a wonderful program for teens. Through their involvement we have seen them mature. They have an opportunity to be leaders in their peer group."

According to the Goldsteins the success of a youth group depends upon more than the members and the advisors. "Synagogue youth groups will succeed only if parents are involved," said Mr. Goldstein. "Parents need to encourage their children to participate in youth group activities."

American Jewry and the lesson of Passover

By Irving Greenberg President, National Jewish Resource Center The Sabbath preceding the Passover holiday is known as Shabbat HaGadol (the Great Sabbath).

Different opinions have been expressed as to1 why this Sabbath is called "the Great one." some say the name derives from association with the apocalyptic prophecy of the prophet Mulachi, which is read on this Sabbath. Malachi, in the final words of prophecy found in the Bible, proclaims: "Behold I [the Lord] will send Elijah the Prophet to you, just before the coming of the great and awesome Day of the Lord."

Others, however, link the name Shabbat HaGadol with a Passover tradition. The Bible relates that each Israelite family was instructed to take a sheep on the 10th of Nissan, and offer it as the Passover sacrifice on the 14th of the month, the day before the Exodus (the 15th of Nissan).

The rabbis thought that the sheep was an object of worship by the Egyptians. To take a sheep, a sacred object of the lord and master and treat it as food, subject to the needs and desires of the Israelites, was an act of defiance and auto-emancipation.

It was even more daring for the Israelites to hold it for a period of four days — which included the Sabbath in that year according to one tradition — enough time for the Egyptians to become aware of the rebellious act the Hebrews were planning to carry out. For while sacrificing the sheep for Passover would have represented one hasty and furtive act, holding it for four days and over the Sabbath represented a conscious, willful self-assertion that signaled the end of Israelite submission to Egyptian hegemony. The Sabbath which fell during the period of this action was in this rabbinic view the harbinger of the glorious Exodus to come. In tribute to the courage of the Israelites who defied their Egyptian masters; it was named the "Great Sabbath." Franz Kafka once wrote that the Messiah will come the day after the Messiah comes. Similarly, the liberation of the Hebrews from Egypt had to be preceded by acts of self-liberation. Had the Israelites simply departed from: Egypt on the 15th day of Nissan the people

would have been taken out of slavery but the slavery would not have been taken out of the people.

The lesson of the Great Sabbath that self-liberation is the-key to freedom from tyranny is of crucial significance at a time of growing concern that American Jewry may be slipping into irreversible assimilation or weakening in its support for Israel. The most encouraging sign that American Jewish history will not end in Jewish submission to the tyranny of foreign values is that the past three decades have been years of increasing self-liberation for American Jewry.

In the 1940s, day schools were shunned by most American Jews for fear that Jewish integration into America might be retarded by such "self-segregation." In the past 15 years, day school student population has increased to almost 100,000 youth.

In the '40s, there was no Jewish presence visible on the university campus. In the past three decades, college and graduate Jewish studies programs have exploded. When I arrived at Harvard as a student in 1953, the school had a policy requiring Sabbath-observant Jews who would not take exams on Saturday to stay confined with a tutor the entire day and take their finals that night, often under onerous conditions. We accepted this quietly and without protest.

This past year, Harvard has been on the defensive as continuous Jewish student demonstrations protested its holding the graduation exercises on the holiday of Shavuot.

Until the late 1960s, Jewish politicians were generally assimilationist and fearful of aggressively defending Jewish interests. One of the tragic stories of the Holocaust period was Roosevelt's use of Congressman Sol Bloom of New York as a front at the Bermuda Conference of 1943 (which was ostensibly convened to discuss the Jewish refugee "problem") and other occasions, to head off Jewish pleas for rescue of Jews fleeing the Holocaust.

Jews especially feared the charge of dual loyalty.

This concern generated support for the American Council for Judaism and its shrill anti-Zionist declarations.

Today, Jewish political action is expanding on all fronts. Leading figures such as Congressman Henry Waxman (D-CA) and Senator Rudy Boschwitz (RMN) are proud Jews, advocating Jewish concerns without fear. The entire organized Jewish community, stood up to presidential pressures on the F-15 and AWACS sales (and now on the proposed arms sales to Saudi Arabia and Jordan) without being intimidated by the implied threat of the dual loyalty charge.

Four decades ago, Orthodox Jews allowed liberal secular Jews to represent them because they were intimidated by American culture. Many non-Orthodox Jews were embarrassed to see Hassidim in public.

Now, the Lubavitcher Hassidim sponsor Congressional resolutions and presidential proclamations in honor of their Rebbe's birthday. And the Satmar sect and other Hassidim have aggressively sought political power and government benefits.

The combined influence of Holocaust consciousness, pride in Israel and identification' with it, and the loss of fear of being different is changing the ground rules of Jewish life.

Many signs abound of the resurgence and reaffirmation of Jewish identity and identification by "mainstream" committed Jews in the U.S. One is the recovery of Jewish names — consider, for example, that David Wallace, the son of best-selling novelist Irving Wallace, changed his name back to David Wallechinsky. Another is the increasing refusal to change one's "Jewish" looks — think of Barbra Streisand's not bobbing her nose. Think, too, of the pride in the Jewish tradition evidenced by her movie "Yentl," which glorifies learning. The proliferation of kippot (yarmulkas)_on the heads of students at leading universities such as Harvard and Columbia, and the growth of observances, such as kashrut and Sabbath observance in the Jewish public are also significant signs of Jewish renewal.

Encouraged by the new openness of American society, Jews are moving beyond political emancipation — for which they often sacrificed their Jewishness — to religious, cultural, and spiritual liberation. This is paving the way for the future.

Omaha reflects good, bad in BBYO

By Diane Wintroub "Omaha is a microcosm of what can go right or wrong in a Jewish community."

Matt and Teresa Cohen are'the adult advisors for Ediar BBG — an example of what can go right and what can go wrong in a Jewish community. As advisors, they are no doubt right. Bright, active and concerned Jews.

But because a new, young couple in Omaha for only a year and a half was asked to be advisors, because they have no vested interest in BBYO yet since their daughter is only eight, because not one member's parent stepped forward to take the responsibility — they are an example of what can go wrong in a Jewish community.

"The regional director at the time came to two people who have no reason to be BBYO advisors," said Matt. "Isn't that disgusting? Isn't that sad? We took it for no other reason than we wanted to do it for the kids. But imagine how they must feel knowing no one else cared enough."

Matt and Teresa, and their daughter, Rachel, moved here from Madison, Wisconsin. Teresa is a secretary at Methodist Hospital and also works in the library and teaches Sunday School at Temple Is-

rael. Matt sells surgical instruments for the J. Sklar Manufacturing Company. ' Matt and Teresa are advisors for Ediar as a husband and wife team. This had never been a practice in Omaha and as far as anyone knows, there hasn't been a husband/wife tea_m for any BBYO chapter across the country.

"There was .some concern about Matt advising girls," said Teresa. "A 32 year old man with 16 year old girls didn't make a big hit at first. No one could imagine a man at a girls' overnight. But the Regional Adult Board did approve the idea and so far, for the past year, it has worked very well."

"The worry was unnecessary, Matt said. "There have been no complaints, only good responses from Steve Rod and the parents. After all, Ediar is finally in the black. Who can complain about that?"

Considering that Ediar had gone through four, or five advisors in the year prior to the Cohens' joining, there was some difficulty at the start. But since they entered the picture when a lot of planning was going on — Beau Dance and an overnight — a healthy relationship developed quickly.

"I think they began to realize that we had no reason

to be there other than we wanted to," said Teresa. "A former advisor told me everything that was wrong about the group, but I refused to listen. Now, I don't think she can believe that we're still advising."

As advisors, Matt and Teresa have made it a point . not to take over any responsibilities that should belong to the girls. For instance, the girls do all of the planning for group functions. Occasionally, the Cohens will come up with an idea and run it by the members, but the final decision is up to the group.

"We consciously avoid doing the project otherwise the girls wouldn't learn responsibility," said Matt.

"We do know exactly what they're doing because we have a calendar of events. For example, Ediar had a car wash. It was a huge success. The girls did all of the planning. They chose the site, they got the supplies — all I did was collect the money and keep the cars moving once the day of the car wash arrived.

"Last Hanukkah the girls put on a carnival. The two who came up with the idea did everything. The weather was lousy for the event, but it turned out to be a pretty good fundraiser anyway. Most of the bugs were worked out with the first try and hopefully things will run real smooth next year."

The Cohens feel that Jewish awareness can't be avoided. Everything done has a certain number of rituals that are of BBYO internationally. One thing the Cohens would like to see happen is a major event involving all Omaha youth groups and their advisors.

Something to open up dialogue.

"There are ritual problems between the various groups," said Teresa, "But that's not something that can't be worked around. I'd like to see all the kids get together at one synagogue for a Shabbat service."

However, the Cohens aren't saying the youth have enough Jewish awareness. "I don't think their Jewish awareness could ever be strong enough," said Matt.

"They need to identify more with their heritage.

Omaha is a tough community for them because it's so assimilated. We try to ease that problem by bringing in chapters from other cities. Minneapolis was invited to town for the last regional convention. But when those kids went back to their hometown, the problem was still there.

"It's hard for the kids when their parents don't have a strong, solid Jewish identity.-The girls are confused. I've actually talked to some who.have a Christmas tree in their house that Santa puts presents under. And then we .ask them to fulfill some simple requirements of being Jewish. They probably don't know who to believe," The Cohens see that a teen's attitude, whether it be a concerned attitude or apathetic, comes from their parents.

• "Last year, we had One freshman quit because she didn't want to be around Jewish girls," said Teresa.

"That was the reason she gave us. We know that not every girl who joins is going to stay active. Some leave so they can devote more time to another Jewish group in town. But when one leaves because she doesn't want to be around Jewish girls — you feel helpless and you wonder what makes parents pass on the values that they do."

The Cohens agree that their experience as advisors has helped them to better understand today's youth.

"It has even helped us understand our own daughter, even though Rachel is considerably younger than these girls," Teresa said!

"I think my relation to the girls can't help but be a little different than Teresa's," said Matt. "To some I'm a big brother and to others I'm a pseudo-dad.

There are girls in the group who have no father, some whose parents have separated and remarried, and some simply don't see their real dads."

Although Matt and Teresa are satisfied with their performance as Ediar's advisors, they admit that an occasional helping hand would have been nice.

"I hate to say it, but we've gotten no support from the local B'nai B'rith Men and Women's organizations," said Matt. "We've heard a lot of promises, but not one has been kept. We talked with one member of the Cornhusker Lodge who gave us empathy and sympathy, but no more. ' • .• "Last Fall there was a cultural to discuss Soviet Jewry. We not only invited the girls' parents, but the general community. I would guess that about eight or nine parents showed and maybe three or four other people.

"Okay, B'nai B'rith doesn't want to give us financial support — although it would be nice. But how about a few words of encouragement every now and then? It's very annoying. The National BBYO Advisor was astounded to hear of what goes on here, or should I say what doesn't go on here."

"Why? Why didn't a B'nai B'rith man or woman step forward to be Ediar's advisor? Is the Omaha Jewish community so apathetic that it doesn't even care about its children?"

Deep involvement culminates in election

By Ellen Gordman For the first time in its history, the North American Federation of Temple Youth will he headed by an Omahan. Mitchell Warren, a senior at Burke High School, will be installed as NFTY president in June at the National Leadership Institute at Kutz Camp in Warwick, New York.

The road to being elected NFTY president started during Mitch's sophomore year. He was elected first vice president of the Omaha Temple Youth Group with responsibility for organizational local programs.

In 1982 he was named president of Western, a subregion of the Missouri Valley Federation of Temple Youth (MoVFTY). Last May he became president of MoVFTY. "OTYG was the first place where I questioned my religion. Being in OTYG has heightened my Jewish identity and helped me discover who I am as a Jew," Mitch explained. "Last summer I spent six weeks in Israel on a NFTY program. I realized that I was a Jew by choice not only by birth. Because of my experiences in youth group I am thinking about becoming a rabbi."

Mitch wanted to be NFTY president to implement his ideas for improving the organization. Mitch believes that NFTY can do an even better job of helping Reform teenagers enhance their Jewish identity.

In the area of social action Mitch would like to study issues that will be meaningful to teens such as drunk driving and cults.

"A large percentage of NFTY members go to college far from home. I want to establish a program bank on cults so high school seniors will know what to expect at college," Mitch said.

"Another area I would like to emphasize is programs to strengthen the family. Teens are definitely affected by the changing family structure and the increase in working mothers."

As president of the 12,000 member North American Federation of Temple Youth, Mitch will spend one year,visiting groups in the United States and Canada.

In addition, he will participate in unique learning experiences. His first will he in April when he visits Poland for one week. He will join other national youth group president son a tour sponsored by the American Zionist Youth Movement.

Mitch is no stranger to travel. In addition to traveling within the MoVFTY Region, he has attended the National NFTY Convention, two biennials of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (UAHC) in Boston and Houston and a High School Leadership Conference sponsored by UAHC in Cincinnati.

During four years of high school, his work for NFTY has not. been Mitch's only extracurricular activity: He is a member of Chaim Weizmann AZA 1510 and has held every office except president. He is curr rently editor of the Burke High School newspaper.

Mitch is playing for the fourth year on the Burke varsity golf team. And he is president of National Honor Society. In addition, this energetic teenager has a part-time job.

Mitch was asked about his ability to participate in all the activities, maintain above average grades and work. "I don't sleep very much," was the reply.

Mitch will be attending college in the fall. He is leaning toward the University of Wisconsin although he has applied to the University of California at Berkley and Stanford. He explained that Wisconsin is more centrally located and will facilitate his travel to the 21 NFTY Regions. Although he will be attending college he will not be participating fully in campus life.

"I will take a lighter academic load and probably not join a fraternity during my freshman year. Going to college and being president of NFTY will definitely be a challenge."

Moses — the legend and the man

By Dorothy Opas Every day of his life, the pious Jew states: "I believe with perfect faith that the prophecy of Moses, our teacher (peace be unto him), was true and that he was the chief of the prophets, both of those that preceded and of those that followed him". This is the seventh of the Thirteen Principles of Faith, formulated by Maimonidea.

Each year, at Passover, we teach our children the story of the Exodus from Egypt, explaining how Moses, our great leader, pleaded with Pharoah and — with God's help — led the children of Israel from slavery to freedom.

But who was this great prophet and leader? Moses was a mere man, from the most humble beginnings.

The first mention of his parentage in the Bible simply states that a man from the house of Levi took a woman from the house of Levi. Later we learn that his father was Amram, grandson of Levi who married his aunt, Yocheved, Levi's daughter. When we read the list of prohibited marriages laid down in Leviticus 18:12, this renders Moses an illegitimate child — that of a forbidden union. It is an unpleasant revelation, but it helps validate those who believe in the Divine origin of the Torah because if Moses or any other human had written it, this fact would surely have remained hidden.

Most people know the story of Moses' childhood.

He was born in Egypt at a time when the cruel Pharoah ruled that all newborn male Hebrew children must be slain. Left adrift on the waters of the Nile, he was found by Pharoah's daughter who took him to the palace, raising him as her son. Grown up, he defended the Hebrew slaves, and killed an Egyptian task-master who was abusing a Jew . . . an act which forced him to flee to Midian.

But why would he have such feeling for his people if he had been reared as an Egyptian from infancy?

First, his natural mother was his nurse until he was quite a lad, giving her the chance to instil in him the belief in1 one God. We assume she also told him the sacred traditions of Israel and the Divine promise to deliver the Jews from Egyptian bondage. In addition, as the adopted son of a princess, he must have had the best education available — probably at Heliopolis, which helped him become a leader of men. We can only assume that when the priests wanted to initiate

him into their idolatry, he remembered his mother's teachings and resisted. *• > The memory of these same moral laws must have caused him to kill the Egyptian that flogged a Hebrew slave. Moses was filled with compassion as he watched his people groaning beneath their burdens.

However, even the princess would not have been able to save him from punishment, so he fled to Midian in the south-eastern part of Sinai, beyond Egyptian jurisdiction.

Moses became a shepherd to the flocks of the pagan priest, Jethro, and married his daughter. We are taught that God never gives an exalted office to a man unless he has first been tested in small things.

Moses saw a lamb escape from the flock to a stream where it quenched its thirst. He said: "Had I known that thou wast thirsty, I would have taken thee in my arms and carried thee thither". A Heavenly voice resounded: "As thou livest, thou art fit to shepherd Israel". (Midrash) In the episode of the burning bush, he was also nominated as God's agent to liberate his people. When Moses was told by God to plead with Pharoah to let his people go, he felt completely unfit for such a task. Already an old man of eighty, God rebuked him for he had God's assurance that He would be with him. Moses was also hesitant because he was not eloquent, having spent years in the great silent spaces of the desert, and he could only stammer forth the message of freedom.

However, he was commanded to return to Egypt to ask Pharoah to set the slaves free, with his brother Aaron as spokesman. The Midrash tells us it took God seven day to convince him. Leavingthe calm of the desert he plunged into the whirlpool of history.

Despite their bondage, the Jews were not really ready to leave Egypt any more than Pharoah was ready to, let them go. The ten plagues followed one another rapidly and in the end not only the Jews left hurriedly, but a number of non-Jewish slaves went with them, racing against time to escape Egypt arid Pharoah's wrath. When the Jews safely crossed the Red Sea, Moses began to sing — the most lyrical poem in Scripture.

Seven weeks later, came the unique event when God spoke directly to Moses at Mt. Sinai and revealed His Law. He spoke not of theology or the wonders cf the universe He had created, but of man's relation-

ship to man, of one's duties towards others. When Moses returned to his people with the Ten Commandments and found them worshipping the Golden Calf, he was so angry he was ready to kill... he never knew what to expect from this "stiff-necked people" lie was leading. They had seen God at work and learned nothing from it. Perhaps sharing something with assimilated Jews today, they still yearned for the fleshpots of Egypt!

Moses castigated his people often and severely. But he also defended them against their enemies, and at times even against God. He was both God's emissary to Israel and Israel's to God. Yet he remained a human being, with many flaws — he had no supernatural powers. He had a temper, and he was punished for it. He lived according to the Biblical count to one hundred and twenty, and spent his last hour blessing the tribes of Israel. He and his generation were forbidden to enter the Promised Land but he died overlooking the Land. Then, escorted by the priest Eleazar and his son Pinhas, followed by Joshua, he climbed Mount Nebo. The Midrash tells us he left them behind, climbed to the top and lay down and God silently kissed his lips. "And the soul of Moses found shelter in God's breath and was swept away into eternity". Nobody knows his resting place and nobody was present at his death.

Moses was the most solitary and most powerful hero in Biblical history. Amongcomparisons made by historians, one of the most interesting is with Muhammad because of the many roles both undertook.

Moses had an immense task and he changed the course of history — after him, nothing was ever the same again. He has been immortalized repeatedly in theology, literature, poetry, painting and sculpture.

As we sit around the Seder table, re-telling the story of the Exodus, we can only be awed at this man and his achievements. He was a man both of faith and of action. He had a passion for social justiceand national freedom. He knew both triumphs and bitter disappointments. He was a poet and gifted strategist with a complex personality. No one ever accomplished so much. The Law bears his name and-Moshe Rabbenu — our Master Moses — remains the only man ever to "see God face to face. By Morris Maline "Omaha's B'nai B'rith Youth Organization (BBYO) has something to offer all Jewish kids."

This is the belief of Debra Polsky, Adult Services Director of the Jewish Community Center, and director of the BBYO program.

Ms. Polsky, who in addition to serving as director of BBYO also serves as the adult advisor to M. Z. Yoshanah — one of the two girls' chapters — has been on the job in Omaha since May 1, 1988.

In her own BBYO youth days, she was a member in Chattanooga nnd sort of volunteer-staff-advisor in the Cotton States Region which includes Tennessee, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama.

"We had about 700 kids involved in a full range of BBYO activities and at one point even had 100 kids attending a Kallah weekend."

Ms. Polsky explained that BBYO offers opportunities for socializing, participation in athletics, Jewish enrichment activities, community service and fraternity.

"The programs we had in the Cotton states were quality as well as quantity and this was due in large part to the participation and concern of the parents as well as the members."

In Omaha, Ms. Polsky explained, the lack of continuity in staff, the difficulty in securing adult advisors, and the reluctance of parents to devote time are the major factors involved in the decline of BBYO. • She pointed out that at present some 136 members participate in the three boys groups and the two girls chapters.

"We are currently serving 22 per cent of all Jewish teens and the synagogue youth groups add another five per cent to those being served, and there is a lot of overlap between the two."

Ms. Polsky said that she has enjoyed some success in rebuilding BBYO in Omaha in that there now is an increased awareness of Judaic interests and that some attention is being directed toward education of

Debra Polsky members and training of leaders.

There is a lot more that should be done and progress is being made, she added.

She pointed out, however, that a major commitment of funding would be necessary to fully develop a variety of new activities.

These might include summer programming, activities in Israel, a Kallah, and more advanced leadership training.

Although some scholarships are available and there is some national money, the costs to the members is rising so fast that many families can't afford such things as $110 for winter conventions, she explained.

Ms. Polsky said that she has enrolled at UNO to earn a master's degree in public administration and that her concentration will be social work.

"I plan to stick with the BBYO program and give it some staff continuity with the expectation that continuing improvement will be made."

She said that a successful rush program this summer and more dependable help from parents and advisors will go a long way toward restoring BBYO to its high position in Omaha.

By Ellen Gordman May 3, 1984, will mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of AZA in Omaha, Nebraska. Since then, AZA along with its sister organization, BBG, has grown into the largest Jewish youth organization in the world.

AZA was founded on the five fold program of athletics, community service, cultural, religious tind social. According to Dan Fields, International AZA President, the five folds are just as important and relevant to AZA as they were six decades ago.

"We must get back to basics, but the members don't really understand the five fold program. When I tell them about it they are interested," said Dan who was in Omaha recently visiting the three AZA chapters.

"Members don't understand the importance of the community service and religious folds. They don't realize that you can have programs in these folds and still have a social quality that appeals to teenagers."

The B'nai B'rith Youth Organization currently has 25,000 members. In the past 60 years over 650,000 Jewish teenagers have belonged to AZA or BBG chapters.

Despite being the largest Jewish youth organization, BBYO has as members only 20 percent of Jewish high school students. According to Dan this proportion has not changed significantly since the 1960s. At that time there were 45,000 BBYO members which was 22 percent of the Jewish teenage population.

"There has never been a youth organization that attracts all of the Jewish teens. I don't think organizations have accepted this idea," Dan said. "Our goal is to offer the 20 percent in BBYO the best program we can.

"BBYO is an option for teens to drugs, drinking and other bad things we don't want them to be involved in. Sometimes little issues get out of hand and people forget that BBYO is based on very strong principles. BBYO has its problems like,any other organization. But it also serves a purpose and stands for everything that is good about teenagers."According to Dan, the strength of BBYO varies from community to community. He believes that in cities where BBYO is suffering, one of the problems is lack of parental involvement with their children.

Dan Fields Dan, a native of Portland, Oregon, was elected president at the International Convention at Camp B'nai B'rith last August. He has deferred starting his college education until this fall when he will enroll at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dan has been involved in AZA since he entered high school. He was president of Chaim Weizmann AZA in Portland. And he served as vice president and president of Northern West. In 1982 he was elected International Secretary-Treasurer. In this position he was responsible for coordinating Kallah and ILTC held each summer at Camp B'nai B'rith. His other job was to promote the International Service Fund which receives its money from assessments to AZA chapters. ISF supports special projects in the United States and Israel.

Dan has enjoyed traveling around the country and meeting BBYO members. "Last year while I was in high school I had lost faith in teens. Ididn't think they were interested in anything or were showing any leadership ability.

"During my travels I have met many smart teens who are active in BBYO. They will be the foundation of the Jewish community in ten to twenty years."

The theme was "Unity" and all of poems and prayers revolved around that theme. We also had a speaker who came to discuss problems girls face today because we can do things that our mothers and grandmothers were forbidden from doing."

Speaking of Ediar, how do MZ and Ediar get along in Debbie's eyes? "Things are sometimes shaky. I'd love it if we were closer, but I also think some separation is natural. I think our goal should be two separate chapters that can get along well with each other."

WZO guide to Israel NEW YORK — The nineteenth annual edition of A Guide to Israel Programs has just been issued by the World Zionist Organization-American Section, with a detailed list of more than 200 programs ranging in time from three-week study tours to six-month work programs and one and two year high school and university courses, as well as short and long-term Yesh,iva study opportunities.

In announcing its publication, Mrs. Bernice S. Tannenbaum, chairman of the executive of the American Section of the WZO, said "the Guide is prepared as an indispensable aid and service to individuals and organizations, particularly in the fields of youth and education. It gathers in one directory, detailed information on the great majority of the available programs for Americans who seek to visit and study or work in Israel. The Guide includes dates, costs, descriptions, eligibility requirements and sponsorship.

Almost 15,000 copies of the booklet have been made available to rabbis, Jewish educators, community centers and youth groups, Zionist organizations, EnglishJewish publications, religious schools, libraries and others.
