Rosh Hashanah 5741 Volunteerism and volunteers

By Rabbi Mark Bisman Tifereth Israel Synagogue The theme of this year's New Year Edition of the Jewish Press is "Volunteerism and Volunteers." Much has been written in recent years about the decline of organizations and activities which depend upon volunteers. Some blame these developments on our 20th century American way of life which has been labeled as an "Age of Narcisism." Others point to the increasing number of women who are employed at full-time jobs outside the home.

Rather than identify a "cause," we would do well to look at our Jewish sources. Judaism has a high regard for what in America is called volunteerism. In the second chapter of Pirke Avot (Ethics of.our Fathers), Simon the Just suggests that the world endures because of Torah, Worship, and Gemllut Hasadim (deeds of lovingkindness). If we look at Jewish comments on Gemllut Hasadim, we will learn a great deal about how our tradition views the work done by volunteers.

Our rabbis taught that in three ways, "Deeds of Loving-kindness" (Gemllut Hasadim) are greater than "Acts of Charity" (Tzedakah). DTzedakab can be given only with one's money; Gemllut Hasadim can be rendered both by personal service and by the use of one's money. 2) Tzedakah can be given only to the poor; Gemllut Hasadim can be rendered both to the rich and to the poor. 3) Tzedakah can be given only to the living; Gemllut Hasadim can be rendered both to the living and to the dead. Rendering personal service to someone; showing care and concern to another human being; doing something for someone else with no ulterior motive or chance of reward — these are the qualities of Gemilut Hasadim.

These are also the qualities of a volunteer. When someone is on the receiving end of such an act, he experiences human concern and love. When someone is the doer of such an act, he learns what it means to love one's fellowman and how even small human gestures to another human being express love and concern for humanity.

"In the Bible,' the word hesed means the love and loyalty that God shows for the Jewish people. When the Rabbis in the Tamudic times read the Torah, they found numerous expressions of God's love for the Jewish people. Most of these acts could only be done by God; but some of them, the Rabbis thought, could be emulated by human beings. These acts of lovingkindness that people can do for one another are Gemllut Hasadim ... just as God clothed the naked (Adam and Eve, Genesis 3:21), visited the sick (Abraham, interpreting Genesis 18:1), comforted the mourners (Isaac, Genesis 25:11), and buried the dead (Moses, Deuteronomy 34:6), so too should the Jewish people perform these deeds, showing love to each other and to all mankind." (Barbara Summers, Community and Responsibility in the Jewish Tradition, 1978, p. 5) Finally, some might paraphrase Simon the Just by saying that were it not for the merit acquired by those

who volunteer and express love for others by their deeds, the world might cease to exist. Injustice and suffering might destroy the world were it not for the "36" righteous people whose merit tips the scales in favor of life. I would, prefer a positive reading. When God created the World and Man, He did so in order that mankind would share with Him the work of creation. God created the World and Man so that (first the Jews, then) humanity would study Torah, worship God, and demonstrate love for one another by their deeds of Gemilut Hasadim. On Rosh Hashanah, the anniversary of creation, let us take to heart the challenge to live life so that we multiply our opportunities to render personal service toothers.

Active participation brings personal satisfaction "The personal satisfaction I get from my volunteer work is hard to describe," said Mrs. David (Sue) Meyers. "But if I didn't get that personal satisfaction I wouldn't be doing all this volunteer work."

Over the years, Mrs. Meyers has been on numerous boards, committees, and commissions. Since 1958, she has been an active member of the National Council of Jewish Women (NCJW). She has participated on both the local and national level.

From 1967-69, Mrs. Meyers was the financial secretary for the Omaha Section of NCJW. She was also Ways and Means vice president from 1969-71, a committee that directs all fundraising activities for Council.

And from 1971-73, she was president of the Omaha Section of the National Council of Jewish Women.

Since 1975, Mrs. Meyers has been chairman of the Council Thrift Shop. "The Thrift Shop is a major money maker for Council," she said.

"Some of the money goes to the Girls Club of Omaha, Radio Talking Books, and to help NCJW support the Jewish senior citizens.

NCJW is primarily a community service organization, but it also helps Israel. On the national level, Mrs. Meyers served on the International Affairs Committee which sets policy in regard to work for Israel.

She also served on the National Membership Committee and the Field Service Committee which helps individual sections function on a basic level.

She is currently serving on the National Thrift Shop sub-committee of the Fundraising Committee and has served on the Central District Nominating Committee and is an alter-

nate to the National Nominating Committee.

About the Thrift Shop, Mrs. Meyers said, "I love it. The shop provides good quality clothing inexpensively. It's a good feeling to see people leave the shop happy with what they bought."

As to why she has been so active in NCJW in general, Mrs. Meyers said, "I like what NCJW does and what it stands for. There's a real value to the services it provides. Council has always been active helping handicapped people. They brought a Russian family to Omaha, and now they're doing an oral history of Omaha.

Aside from the National Council of Jewish Women, Mrs. Meyers is active in several other organizations. She served on the Jewish Community Center board where she was a member of the House Committee from 1977-78.

In 1979, she was actively involved with the auction held at the Center. "I was in charge of cataloguing everything donated to the auction," she said.

Mrs. Meyers has been a member of the Temple Israel Sisterhood since 1957. She was corresponding secretary from 1963-65 and vice president from 1965-67. "One activity I've always enjoyed doing with the Sisterhood is the Book Fair," said Mrs. Meyers.

Mrs. Meyers was a member of the Mayor's Commission on the Status of Women from 1973-75. "There's a difference between women's rights and women's liberation," she said.

"The commission worked for women's rights.

We worked for equal pay between men and women doing equal work, equal opportunity for education, and a Rape Hotline was started.

I personally was involved with the situation of women in jails — how the women are treated,

Mrs. Meyers and her husband, David, volunteered at Sunset Hills Elementary School.

In 1964 they chaired the carnival, and in 1965 they were the presidents of the Community Club(PTA).

Mrs. Meyers is currently a "patient greeter" at Methodist Hospital. She delivers flowers and visits with the patients. "Many of the people in the hospital are lonely. Some are from out-of-town and their friends and relatives can't get in to visit them. They really appreciate someone to chat with every once in a while."

Mrs. Meyers is also active with the Meyer Childrens Rehabilitation Institute. Since last year she has been on the Board of the Women's Guild of the Institute. She was co-chairman of the Patron Party which is associated with the Garden Walk Patron Party, a parade of homes.

"The Patron Party," said Mrs. Meyers, "supports the Institute with money for adaptive equipment. This equipment can be adapted to the handicap of a specific child. It is very expensive and frequently needs to be changed because the children are constantly growing."

Mrs. Meyers also serves on the Federation's Jewish Family Service Board.

"All of the volunteer work I do gives me some kind of satisfaction in its own way," said Mrs. Meyers. I've met some of the most wonderful people. Volunteer work fills your life with lovely people, tf I have the ability to help someone, that's what I want to do."

With all of her volunteer work, Mrs. Meyers has received tremendous support from her family. "My husband thinks the same way I do about helping people," she said. "And I think our boys learned a lot from my work, too; If nothing else, they learned how to take accurate phone messages."

Mr. and Mrs. Meyers have three sons — John-, 22, Joe, 20, and Bill, 17.

"I sometimes wonder where I find the time for all this work," said Mrs. Meyers, "but I guess I want to make the time, so I do."

Ever present behind the scenes of the hot lunch programs at Beth El Synagogue and the Jewish Community Center, whether filling up water pitchers and coffee pots in the kitchen, or setting tables and serving lunches out in the dining room, is senior volunteer Al Oruch. A Jewish Community Center volunteer for the past three years, Oruch is an active member of the Old Timers.

Oruch was born and raised in Omaha, the son of Russian immigrants. His father, David, a native of Kiev, Russia, ran a tailoring business in Omaha. Mother Rose was an Odessa native. Each came to Omaha around 1913, according to Oruch, where they met and married. They were members of Beth Israel Synagogue in Omaha.

The Oruch brothers, Al and younger brother Harold, grew up at 1638 Victor Avenue, where they attended Lake School and Omaha Technical School. Al continued his education after high school, completing two years of accounting at Omaha University.

Among Al's favorite sports while attending school were playing ball and swimming. At the age of 12, he joined the old Jewish Community Center on 20th and Dodge Streets, where he swam and played basketball. He continued, those sports while attending Technical School, although after-school jobs kept him busy.

"I worked mostly after school and I couldn't do those athletic things," Oruch said.

Oruch went on to earn his Junior and Senior Life Saving Certificates at Technical School, and became a swimming instructor at the Jewish Community Center when he was 19.

After leaving Omaha University, the young man met and married his first wife, Vivian, at the age of 21. The couple lived with her parents for the first few years of their married life, then moved out on their own.

Beginning what was to become a long and fruitful career in the grocery business, Oruch took a job as meat cutter at the Grace Street Market, then owned by his father-in-law. Deciding to go into business for himself, Oruch later bought the market from his in-laws, which he owned and operated for the next 21 years.

"When you work for somebody else, it's a little rough," Oruch explained reasons for owning his own business. "If you want to sit down, you sit down . . . When you work for somebody else, you can't."

Oruch operated the grocery for all but three years, when he was in the service from 1944-47. While on tour of duty overseas,' his wife ran the grocery with the help of her mother.

"I was just six months in the States. The rest was overseas," Oruch explained. His tour of duty included time in New Guinea, Bornea and the Phillippines.

After returning from overseas, Oruch resumed management of the market until 1957, when he decided to close the business.

"I wanted a vacation . . . We had' been married for 21 years and never had a vacation," he said. "When I was in the grocery

business, you worked from morning 'til night."

After closing the grocery, the couple took a three-month vacation to New York, Washington, and Florida, to name just a few places.

When the Oruchs returned to Omaha after their trip, Oruch began working for the Garden Market, where he remained for 14'^ years until 1975. He then left the market to work part time for the House of Poultry, where he worked three days a week until injuring his finger on a machine last year, his only workrelated accident in, 36 years in the grocery business.

Over the past year, Oruch has had three operations on his finger, with the most recent surgery this summer putting his arm in a cast fora month.

"It all depends on how this finger comes out if I work or not," Oruch said. The cast was removed in July, and if all goes well, Oruch will return to the business he loves, the grocery business, working part time again at the House of Poultry.

Although temporarily off of volunteer duty because of his cast, nothing could stop Oruch from attending lunches and meetings at the JCC. There he is greeted by familiar faces and friends who ask with concern, "How're you feeling," and "When's that thing coming off your arm?"

Oruch began doing volunteer work when he saw how his first wife, Vivian, became "involved." After being "fully retired" in 1977, he became actively involved in volunteering with the Jewish Community Center.

He first began volunteering his assistaance with the hot lunch program at the center, where he waits on tables, serves, sets up and buses tables. He later joined the Old Timers Group at the center, which meets every other Tuesday, for which he also helps with meals and clean up.

In addition to his work at the JCC, Oruch also works at the hot lunch program at Beth El Synagogue on Thursdays.

Widowed in 1979, Oruch remarried in February to Reva, who has two married sons and four grandchildren.

"We're still on a honeymoon," he said.

Reva Oruch, like her husband, is also an active volunteer, assisting with meals at both the Jewish Community Center and Beth El. "We keep pretty busy with different things," Oruch says in describing what he likes best about volunteer work.

Among Oruch's hobbies is traveling, either by car or plane. The couple plans future trips to Fort Worth and Dallas, as well as the Catskill Mountains in New York.

"I like to go by car. You can stop and see things," he stated as his preference in traveling.

"Every month we plan something . . . we'll see what comes up in October and November," he added.

Another pastime of Oruch's was coin collecting, which he was involved in for about 15 years. He decided to give up the hobby because "I couldn't keep them (coins) at home to look a t . . . I had to keep them in a safe deposit box."

Still an active swimmer, Oruch swims two to three times a week in the winter, and "in the summer practically every day," he said.

Among the organizations Oruch belongs to are the JCC Health Club and the Elks, where he and his wife frequently attend dances on Saturday evenings. He also belongs to the Jewish War Veterans, of which he has been a member for the past three years, and recently joined the B'naiB'rith.

Though his cast has kept him from being as active a volunteer as he would like to be, Oruch will no doubt be back into action quickly after it is removed. (R.E.L.)

Age is no barrier Edith Graetz, 95 years old last April 28, is still volunteering her time to others. Once each month, weather permitting, she is driven to the Dr. Sher Home by Rose Weiner to visit with the residents.

"I have been visiting at the Sher Home since it was built. I visit with the elderly. They always seem to be happy to see us," said the alert, outgoing Mrs. Graetz.

Mrs. Graetz, who was born in Russia and came to the United States at the age of 5, has always been a participant in the Jewish community. She belonged to a sewing group that met every Tuesday

and made clothing for children in Israel. During the Second World War the women sewed for hospitals and the Red Cross. Mrs. Graetz has been a member of Hadassah "since Henrietta Szold" and a supporter of Beth El Synagogue since it was built.

"I worked in the kitchen at Beth El cooking for luncheons and dinners. Our sewing group raised money for the synagogue by putting money into pushka. We gave the first kitchen freezer," said Mrs. Graetz. "The group even bought one of the lights when the synagogue was built. They needed so much money and we had money saved up. They used it for good purposes." (E.G.)

A tough set of footsteps to follow

"I hope my children are following in my footsteps." One thing is for sure, the children of Mrs. James (Esther) Wax certainly have a well beaten path to follow. Their mother has repeatedly volunteered for work in a number of organizations for many years.

Mrs. Wax has been active in B'nai B'rith since her teenage years.

She was a member of B'nai B'rith Girls in Milwaukee and was an advisor to a BBG chapter in the same city. Mrs. Wax has been involved with B'nai B'rith Women here in Omaha, and is a life member.

Every Friday morning Mrs. Wax can be found working at the snack shop in the hospital. For the past eight years she has served as treasurer of the shop.

Involved with the Childrens Friends Board, Mrs. Wax is the membership chairman of the Board and has helped out with the Bazaar, the main fundraiser of the Friends Board.

"The Donor Luncheon is the Sisterhood's big fundraiser held each February," said Mrs. Wax. "There is always a program, either with a few members of the Sisterhood or we bring in some kind of entertainment."

On top of all of her volunteer work, Mrs. Wax is an accompanist "just for fun." Many a time, she can be found playing the piano to liven up a skit or add atmosphere to a wedding.

She worked on the Soviet Jewry Resettlement program for th6 first families. She was involved in finding medical and dental care and helped

acquire necessities, along with helping to drive the family members to. and from different appointments and lessons.

At present Mrs. Wax is on the Jewish Music Division of the cultural arts committee. It is a two-year appointment. She is busy working with the Jewish Community Center High School and Junior High School Board.

Mrs. Wax and her husband, Jim, have four children: Howard, Marcy, Karen and Julie. All have been active in the Beth Israel Synagogue Youth Organization — Howard is now advisor to the older group and Julie has served as president and vice president of the younger group — and Karen is active in both the synagogue group and BBG. Mrs. Wax's children seem to be following in her footsteps. Wouldn't it be nice if more children did?

Minnie Levine just 'has to keep busy9 Mrs. Aaron (Minnie) Levine enjoys her volunteer work because, as she put it, "it does just as much for me as the people I help."

Mrs. Levine has been a volunteer worker for a number of years. Back in the late 1940s and early 1950s, when plans were underway for construction of the Beth Israel Synagogue at its present location on 52nd Street, Mrs. Levine sold $1000 worth of tickets to help build the synagogue. And for five years she was in charge of Beth Israel's gift shop.

Mrs. Levine is a member of Hadassah for which she used to sell jewelry and tickets for various fundraisers. She is a former member of the National Council of Jewish Women.

Mrs. Levine and her husband, Aaron, have a daughter, Ruthie Levine Laser. Their son, Melvin, was killed in the service during World WarH. They have two granddaughters — For the past 14 years, Mrs. LeMarilyn Laser and Wendy Macinvine has worked in the canteen at the skas — and one great granddaughtRed Cross Center, 432 So. 39th er, Leah Ann Macinskas.

Wednesday night is bingo night

Gerald Meyer looks over tbe awards be has received for his volunteer work at the Veterans Administration Medical Center.

On the fourth Wednesday evening of every month Gerald Meyer plays bingo. For the last 13 years Gerald has run the Cornhusker B'nai B'rith sponsored bingo game at the Veterans Administration Hospital.

With the help of Sidney Speiglman, Gerald calls numbers and awards prizes to the patients. Usually 15 to 25 men attend the evening hour game.

When asked why he had conducted the bingo game for so many years, Gerald replied, "I don't live too far from Veterans Hospital, and 1 only give one hour each month."

Further reflection on the question brought out the real reason he has donated over 425 hours to give veterans a break from hospital routine.

"I've always believed that people should try to help other people in certain ways. It's part of the Jewish

religion. I like helping other people.

One of the creeds of the Jaycee's Is to help others."

Gerald belonged to the Jaycee's, which was called the Junior Chamber of Commerce in the 1960s. He collected funds for the Salvation Army at Christmas time, indoctrinated new members and promoted attendance at conventions.

Gerald, who works in the accounting department at Union Pacific, was a Junior Achievement advisor for three years. Using his ability with numbers, he assisted the treasurer with keeping the money in order.

A member of B'nai B'rith for over 25 years, Gerald likes running the monthly bingo games. So he plans to continue calling B-5, 1-29 and 0-75 for many more Wednesday evenings. (E.G.)

Sam Gfeenberg is the ex-officio sign painter and window washer of the Hadassah Bargain Box. How did he get these positions?

"Well, I always used to drive by the shop down on Farnam Street," said Mr. Greenberg. "In one word, it was an eyesore. It was just a general mess.

"Maybe it's a peculiarity of my personality, but I've always thought that anything Jewish ought to be clean. So, I went inside one day and asked if they wanted the windows washed. The ladies said go ahead, and that's when it all started."

Now, eight years later, Mr. Greenberg still hasn't finished. He still paints signs, washes windows, and does other odds and ends around the shop. "It's the least I can do for_ the shop," he said.

"The women here do great work supporting the Hadassah Hospital in Israel and supporting medicine in general.

All of the money made from selling things at the shop goes to medical research.

"Most of the women who do volunteer work at the Bargain Box have had no retail experience. I have that experience, so it's no chore for me to help out a little. It's rewarding to be helping others."

Mr. Greenberg gained his retail experience as the co-owner (with his brother Henry) of the Philips Stores in Omaha and Fremont. In February of 1973, Mr. Greenberg retired. But he hasn't really stopped

working. Aside from the Hadassah Bargain Box, Mr. Greenberg does volunteer work for a number of organizations. He is chairman of the concessions at the Henry Doorly Zoo. "I think Omaha has a marvelous . zoo," said Mr. Greenberg, "and the concession stands help to make it a better place. I put the merchandise in a presentable order so the people will want to buy it."

Mr. Greenberg is also a member of the South Neighborhood Association (SONA) which works to make life more attractive for people living in South Omaha. He has also been a member of the Salvation Army for 40 years.

In 1974, Mr. Greenberg was king of Ak-Sar-Ben. Of all the activities he participated in as king, Mr. Greenberg most enjoyed visiting towns in outstate Nebraska.

"Whenever Ak-Sar-Ben is mentioned," Mr. Greenberg said, "most people think of horse races and family shows. But, Ak-Sar-Ben does much more. It was interesting to see how the organization is regarded outside of Omaha. The people outstate are very appreciative of what Ak-Sar-Ben does. It was really an exhilarating experience."

Mr. Greenberg and his wife Mildred, have four children. They have three sons, Coleman and twins Philip and Joseph, and a daughter, Mrs. Steven (Barbara) Seglin. They also have four grandchildren.

This year's party was attended by more than 100 newcomers and volunteer committee members. Federation President Joe Kirshenbaum told the August meeting of the Board of Directors that the party at the JCC was "super . . . one of the best held."

Chevra Kadisha—Holy Society A Chevra Kadisha is the group in charge of preparing a body for burial. The members of the Chevra Kadisha wash the body, and then clothe the body in shrouds.

Chevra Kadisha means "holy society." The group is known by this name because "it is a great mitzvah. a great meritorious deed to be involved in the preparation of the dead," said Rabbi Isaac Nadoff of Beth Israel Synagogue.

"It is a mitzvah to prepare a body because the body was sacred in life and is also sacred in death. Manning the body is absolutely for-

bidden. The body housed the soul. The body is G-d's creation and therefore needs reverent treatment."

The Jewish Funeral Home is known as the Chesed Shel Ernes which means "a true act of loving kindness." Why is it a "true" act of loving kindness? "Because you are preparing the dead who can never thank you," said Rabbi Nadoff.

The Chevra Kadisha in Omaha was formed eight years ago through the efforts of Rabbi Nadoff, Harry Sidman and Aron Zeiderman.

Although all the members of the Chevra Kadisha are affiliated with Beth Israel Synagogue, anyone in the Jewish community may use the services of the Chevra Kadisha and the Jewish Funeral Home.

"We felt we had a responsibility to start a Chevra Kadisha," said Mr. Zeiderman. "It is a great mitzvah to prepare the dead, and we follow all the laws of preparation very strictly."

These laws involve washing and dressing the body, reciting prayers and treating all as equals.

"Every man is treated the same whether he is a millionaire or a poor man," said Mr. Zeiderman.

"Everybody is dressed in shrouds, no tuxedos, no shoes. Nobody is ever embalmed. The blood belongs to the body and must be buried with the body."

The truly generous man is he that always gives, whether it be much or little, before he is asked.

As chairman of the Chevra Kadisha, Mr. Zeiderman makes sure all the laws are followed and that no one who desires the Chevra Kadisha's services is turned down. The Chevra Kadisha is a very disciplined group. All of the volunteers must be ready at any time — summer or winter, day or night.

Both men and women are members of the Chevra Kadisha. "The men prepare the body of a dead man, and the women prepare the body of a dead woman," said Rabbi Nadoff.

"This is not necessarily the case in a regular mortuary."

The women in the Chevra Kadisha prefer to remain anonymous; the men are: Aron Zeiderman, Sam Shyken, Dik Weiner, Norman Zevitz, Louis Weiner, Dave Wine, Saul Libowski, Mike Orlowski, Evan Fishman, Cantor Leo Fettman, Rabbi Jonathan Rosenbaum, Meir Vilenski and Dr. Hershel Stoller.

"Any member of Beth Israel may volunteer to work for the Chevra Kadish as long as he is not sensitive — he can look at a dead body," said Mr. Zeiderman.

Harry Sidman's involvemenlwith the prep' aration of the dead is primarily through the Jewish Funeral Home and with the immediate survivors. Mr. Sidman has-been doing this work voluntarily for approximately 25 years.

"Mr. Sidman arranges the time and place of burial, secures the use of the Jewish Funeral Home, makes sure the Home is kept in a dignified condition, helps the family choose a plot, casket, and pallbearers, and will also see to it that there is a news article," said Rabbi Nadoff.

"I don't do the work for personal satisfaction," said Mr. Sidman, "but because I feel it is needed, it is required."

Mrs. Potash has always been active in a number of groups. As a child, she was a member of Young Judea and is now a member of Hadassah. She is also a member of the National Council of Jewish Women.

Mrs. Potash was recently honored by being named American Mizrachi Woman of the Year. "It was just a beautiful tribute," she said.

Mrs. Potash is a busy women. As she put it, "At 77, I've got my hands full with Mizrachi, Sisterhood, and the Older Adults." (D.W.)

A familiar figure at the VA hospital When the Veterans Administration Hospital first opened, Mrs. Abe (Jennie) Bear was its first volunteer. Now, twenty years later, Mrs. Bear is still doing volunteer work at the hospital.

"My husband (then Commander of the American Legion) and I went to see the hospital during its open house," said Mrs. Bear. "The head administrator mentioned that the hospital needed •some volunteers, so I volunteered."

When Mrs. Bear first began her volunteer work at the hospital, she helped the patients by bringing them their medicine and wheeling them around. She also worked in the mail room.

Now she works at the main desk. "Even though I'm now at the main desk," said Mrs. Bear, "I still do little things to help the patients.

Just the other day there was a bouquet of flowers sitting on the desk, so I took them up to the patient/' Mrs. Bear usually volunteers >at the hospital once a week, but sometimes she'll go in more often. "I'm doing a good deed," she said. "By helping others, I help myself and I enjoy the work I do at the hospital.

"I've called others to come with me and volunteer, but they're always too busy. Sometimes I'm asked to play bingo or mah jongg on the day I'm supposed to go to the hospital, but I always say no. I feel loyal to what I'm doing."

Mrs. Bear is the Federation's representative for the Veterans Hospital. Each month she makes sure one Jewish organization sponsors a program at the hospital.

"It doesn't take that much work to organize a program, and the patients really appreciate it," said Mrs. Bear.

Working at the Veterans Administration Hospital isn't the only volunteer work Mrs. Bear does. She also helps at the Paxton Manor with the Downtown Senior Citizens. She used to do volunteer work at Childrens Memorial Hospital and at the gift shop at Clarkson Hospital.

Mrs. Bear and her late husband, Abe, who was active in B'nai B'rith and at Beth Israel Synagogue, have two children—David Bear and Myron Max Bear. They also have five grandchildren. (D.W.)

Thanks are his rewards Nate Ferer, retired Omaha businessman, has a new job. He works hours that fit his schedule, he receives many personal rewards, but there is no weekly paycheck. Nate is a volunteer in the Oncology Department of Methodist Hospital, He says that his pay is the thanks he receives from the patients.

"I've gotten a raise in salary so many times from the patients who thank me. This is a very rewarding job. I get so much enjoyment when I can get a patient to laugh and be happy.

"I feel empathy for the patients because my wife was diagnosed with cancer three years ago. I tell the people with cancer about my wife. I tell them that she is doing just fine.

It makes the patient feel good, and it makes me feel good," said Nate who had a warm, outgoing nature.

Nate is no stranger to cancer and the routine of the Methodist Oncology Department.

For three years his wife, Rose, was under treatment from the doctors in the department.

Late last year Nate took Rose to Methodist for a checkup. A volunteer offered Nate a cup of coffee in the waiting room, and he decided on the spot that he wanted to volunteer to help other people.

"I was offered different jobs like the information desk, sitting in the chapel and playing tapes for Tel-Med. But the job that appealed to (Continuedon Page32)

Nate arrives at Methodist two or three mornings a week at seven o'clock. He has coffee and kibitzes with the staff before going on duty at eight o'clock. He turns on the television in the men's dressing room, makes sure there is a newspaper for the patients to read and helps deliver the mail. He transports patients from their rooms on the upper floors to the Oncology Department on the main floor.

And if outpatients need help changing from their street clothes to a dressing gown, Nate is there to assist.

With all of these duties, the part Nate likes best is talking to the patients, putting them at ease, trying to make them smile and helping them with probelms when he can.

"The Oncology Department has a team of doctors, a minister and social workers. Every Tuesday morning there is an orientation program for cancer patients and their families.

We give them information that will help them live with cancer.

"One of the main points the patients learn is not to worry about money. One day a retired school teacher with cancer told me that he had $15,000 worth of bills, and he didn't know how he was going to pay them. I told one of the so-

cial workers and she helped the man get his insurance company to pay the bills."

Nate has already received his pin for 300 hours of volunteer work at The Methodist Hospital and estimates that he has now put in over 500 hours. This is quite an accomplishment for a man who never did any volunteer work before. Nate was the manager of the Nebraska Furniture Mart Service Department for 20 years.

Seven years ago he retired but he has been keeping busy since then helping a niece manage her husband's office and taking care of his wife when she was ill with cancer.

"Since I have been used to working I have to keep busy. You know, I have never had such a feeling ftfr a job like my volunteer work at Methodist. Even if they paid me I'd do the job for nothing. Besides, I've been married 52 years but there is such a thing as too much togetherness with your wife after you retire," said Nate. He and his wife have one daughter, three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Nate is one of only three men who volunteer in the Oncology Department at Methodist Hospital. "I'd like to see other Jewish men get involved in volunteer work. You can't play cards every day of your retirement.'' (E.G.)

ByDebiKatleman In the news one often hears about a man who saved a life by retrieving a drowning child from a nearby lake. Then, the next day the man is declared a hero and given numerous awards.

These are the good Samaritans who get the recognition, but what about the loyal volunteers who help at the local synagogue?

Somehow their acts of kindness should be recognized by the community.

Mrs. Gertrude (Gussie) Zweiback is one such volunteer who for over three years has faithfully volunteered her services to the Jewish community. She serves every Thursday at the Beth El synagogue "Walk-in" lunches.

These meals are designed for persons in the neighborhood to walk to a meal site and receive a hot meal that they wouldn't otherwise be able to cook for themselves.

Plus, they enjoy a friendly game of bingo, or a trip to Israel through a film or slide show, and always a warm conversation.

Mrs. Zweiback devotes her time to the serving and clean-up crew. She helps by serving the food to the seniprs, then clearing the tables after the patrons are finished with their meal.

She also straightens up the kitchen so the help can do other dut ies.

After her work is finished she sits back and enjoys a friendly conversation with one of the seniors, which she says is her reward for all the work she puts in during the lunches. She loves to see and visit with the people.

Mrs. Zweiback claims creating a smile on an older person's face makes all the hard work worthwhile. She looks forward to being with the older folks—they keep her 'thinking young" even though some may consider her a senior herself. She feels more fortunate than most because she has her health. £•;•;

What makes a person like Mrs. Sam Zweiback devote her time to helping others? She feels that her volunteer work rewards her with the satisfaction of helping others and feels there is no way to put a price tag on that kind of pleasure.

She is the first to admit that she works harder at the Beth El Walk-In Lunches than she does at home, but that's what makes it a special time for her.

Mrs. Zweiback is just one of the unsung heroes in the Jewish • community who lend a helping hand to others in return for a warm happy smile.

Old Timers group 9 occupies Dave s time A senior citizen who describes himself as "up to my neck" in volunteer work at the Jewish Community Center, Dave Katz enjoys the duties and responsibilities he has taken on with the work, and constantly adds to them.

The Council Bluffs resident was born in Chicago on December 4, 1906, the youngest of two boys and five girls born to native Russians, Louis and Fannie, as well as the only child born in the United States to the couple.

Father Louis, a butcher, and mother Fannie, a homemaker, accepted a great challenge when they moved their already large family of six children more than half way around the world from Russia to Chicago.

In Chicago, Louis took a job with a clothing manufacturer, a business in which his youngest child, Dave, would follow in his footsteps.

Young Dave made his home in Chicago for the first 32 years of his life, attending grammar and high schools in the city. He also went to night college, where he took courses in bookkeeping and mathematics.

"It was a help in the business," he said of his college training.

Mr. Katz married Lola in 1927, and soon began what was to become a long and successful career in the clothing manufacturing business. He held his first job in the field for nine years in Chicago.

The couple remained in Chicago until 1938, when Mr. Katz took another position with a clothing manufacturer selling women's dresses. Because the position of traveling representative covered the large area of the entire states of Iowa and Nebraska, the couple decided to choose a midway point between the two states, and made Omaha their new home.

"I'd start out Monday morning and come back Friday," Mr. Katz described an average work week in the clothing manufacturing busi-

ness as a traveling representative.

"Once in a while there were what we called 'markets,' where the store owners would come in and do their purchasing.

After living in Omaha for 20 years, Mr. Katz and present wife, Kay, whom he married 12'/i> years ago, moved to Council Bluffs where she owned her own home.

Mr. Katz worked the motor routes of Nebraska and Iowa for all but one year out of 37, although he admitted the traveling was "a hard life."

That brief respite from traveling for his business came when Mr. Katz was in the service in 1944 and part of 1945, although he covered quite a few miles in Europe while on duty. His tour of duty in Europe included Germany, France, and Czechoslovakia.

"1 was in that part of Czechoslovakia where they were still fighting after the armistice was signed," he recalled.

After spending over half his life at the difficult work of constantly traveling on the job, Mr. Katz finally "retired from the road" in 1972. Not quite ready to retire completely from the work force, he went to work for his two sons, Earl and Leroy, who own five clothing stores, two in Council Bluffs, two in Omaha, and one in Lincoln. Mr. Katz also has a daughter, Faye Garber.

For the next three years, Mr. Katz put in time at the stores until he decided to completely retire in 1975.

"I still work a bit," he added, helping his wife in the early morning and late afternoon at the Council Bluffs store where she works.

The Old Timers group at the Jewish Community Center gained a new member in 1975 when Mr. Katz joined the group.

"I needed something to occupy my time,"

he said of one of the reasons he decided to get involved with the group.

Mr. Katz serves as correspondent for the group, taking notes on Early Bird Discussions and writing articles for the Jewish Press.

Though he has been a correspondent for eight months now, he still says "I'm not used to that (writing)."

In 1976, the Old Timer member became Host Chairman. Later on he added to his duties and responsibilities to the group by being chosen for the position of Sunshine Chairman.

The position involves sending cards to ill members, making condolence calls to grieving families, and visiting ill members in the hospital. Mr. Katz keeps informed about these ^ people through members of the Jewish Com- ^ munity Center, other people, and the bulletin.

"It keeps me busy two or three days a week," he said.

Mr. Katz has a committee under him who shares in the responsibilities of keeping in touch with ill members and families.

"I pick one week to go to the hospital, and the next week I take someone," he explained: In addition to these activities in the Old Timers, Mr. Katz organized the Gin Gang, which is a group of men who play cards every Tuesday at the Center.

"We come down in the morning, bring our lunch, and play 'til afternoon," he said of the group.

Mr. Katz also is a member of the Older Adults, which meets at the Beth El nearly every Thursday. In addition to his activities at the Jewish Community Center, he belongs to the B'nai B'rith, the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Jewish War Veterans, of which he has served as Senior Commander for the past seven months.

Although extremely busy with his volunteer work and organization meetings, this senior citizen still has time to take part in the leisure activities he enjoys. Among his many activities, he enjoys swimming and plans to join the Health Club at the Jewish Community Center.

"I used to be very athletic," he recalled of his youth.

The Katzes enjoy traveling on their vacations, even though Mr. Katz did spend so many years of his life traveling for his job. Among the trips they have taken, the couple has been to the Catskill Mountains of New York state, the Black Hills, Yellowstone Park and Hawaii.

One of their favorite modes of transportation is cruise ships.

"I like to travel when I can get my wife away from the store," he said of Mrs. Katz's busy job in the Council Bluff's store.

Other hobbies Mr. Katz has include doing crossword puzzles, playing cards, and watching television, although no doubt, like his volunteer work, he will always be adding activities and hobbies to his busy and active life.

Helping to keep the blind informed "I've always had an interest in the blind because I have a cousin who was born blind," said Mrs. Saul M. (Esther) Graetz, coordinator of the Beth El Sisterhood Braille Group.

The National Womens League of Conservative Sisterhoods took on braille work as one of its projects. In 1958, the project spread to Omaha. Bernice Wolfson was then the chairman of the Braille Group at Beth El. "Bernice was an excellent chairman," said Mrs. Graetz. "She started a nursery for young blind children at Beth El. Now the nursery is under the direction of the Omaha Public Schools. Bernice also started the Nebraska Foundation of the Blind."

The Braille Group is supported by the Beth El Braille Fund which was set up by Bernice Wolfson. "The Fund was an emotionally appealing idea," said Mrs. Graetz. "The Braille Group has never been in financial trouble."

Mrs. Graetz became involved with the Braille Group when it first started here in Omaha in 1958. She gets much satisfaction out of her work. "It's nice to knov^you're helping someone who needs help. Lots of work we do helps to educate the blind and the visually impaired."

As coordinator of the Braille Group, Mrs. Graetz had little time for actual braille work.

She spends most of her time calling on the approximately 30 volunteers of the Group.

"In order to become a braillist one must take brailling lessons," said Mrs. Graetz.

"There are 26 lessons to complete and then you must submit a 35 page manuscript to the Library" of Congress in order to become certified. The manuscript is graded and then you can braille for anyone."

"A thermoform machine is like a Xerox machine for braille," Mrs. Graetz said. "We are able to copy original manuscripts with the thermoform machine."

The Beth El Braille Group now has 20 brailling machines, but not all are in service because there aren't that many braillists currently in the Group. The machines are kept at the homes bf the braillists.

The Braille Group at Beth El brailles and copies several kinds of publications. Much of the work is done for blind and visually impaired state workers and lawyers. The Group also makes copies of masters from Omaha Public School Publications for schools all over the United States.

"Some of the publications we braille are textbooks which enable the blind to teach the blind," said Mrs. Graetz. ~ -â&#x20AC;˘ Brailling is not the only service of the Braille Group. They also do large print typing and make tape recordings. The large print typists and tape recordists, like the braillists, work at home.

"Most of the tape recordings are made for students," said Mrs. Graetz. "We record books for the grade school level on up to the college level. These recordings are for the visually impaired who can read, but can't read fast enough and therefore need the help of a recording."

Of the volunteers in the group, approximately one half are Jewish and the other half non-Jewish. "There's so much work to be done we never turn anybody away," said Mrs. Graetz. "New volunteers are always welcome."

Since serving as chairman of Rescue, Warning and Evacuation in the 1943 Missouri River Flood to his present work with the Blood Donor program, Millard has given countless hours of service.

The Red Cross is not the only recipient of Millard's time and effort. For two years Millard and his wife, Harriet, participated in the Meals on Wheels program one day a week.

Currently with Harriet, he reads the newspaper one day a week at Radio Talking Book.

And each winter in Palm Springs, Millard works at the Desert Hospital Emergency Information Desk and teaches a consumer study class for the blind, What motivates Millard, who is retired, to continue giving of himself instead of sitting back and taking life easy?

"I like keeping busy. There is a feeling of being able to help other people at the same time helping myself. It really is a selfish motive. I like being associated with other people and having a good relationship with the staff and volunteers."

Millard started his work in the Red Cross Blood Donor program in the summer of 1972 after retiring as owner and manager of Badger Body and Truck Equipment Company.

First he worked in the blood distribution area taking packaged blood to various hospitals.

Then he went to work in the Blood Donor

Room at the Red Cross Chapter House '.'I learned how to seal the bags of blood into 13 different segments, how to take a temperature and pulse, worked between the beds and escorted donors. Finding that working at the Red Cross wasn't enough to keep me busy, I volunteered through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) to read at Radio . Talking Book," Millard said.

One of Millard's jobs with the Red Cross is Blood Donor Recruitment. He works with organizations to set up Blood Mobile units like the one at Temple Israel last July. But Millard doesn't confine himself to just working for the Red Cross.

He took a course at the Braille Institute in Los Angeles and learned how to teach aids to the blind such as cooking, identifying money and other skills for everyday living. While living in Palm Springs he teaches a weekly class in consumer study to students who are legally blind.

"The students read articles from the newspaper and then we discuss them in class.' So many blind people sit at home and don't have the opportunity to express themselves. I try to get the students to loosen up and express themselves," Millard explained. "We get into some very heated discussions which do a great deal for the students. It allows them to elucidate and have a release they don't otherwise have."

family. His mother-in-law, Blanche Rosenfeld, has been a Red Cross volunteer for over 60 years. Harriet Speier has also given many hours of time through the organization. Once each week she works as a Red Cross volunteer in the library at Veterans Hospital.

Together Millard and Harriet participated in what he considers one of the most satisfying experiences of his volunteer career. "After the 1975 Tornado, Harriet and I worked as case workers at the One Stop Centers. We had personal contact with the disaster victims when we issued them vouchers for relief aid," Millard said.

When Millard started working for the Blood , Donor Program, there were only two men volunteers. Today there are about 10 men participating. But, according to Millard, more volunteers are always needed. ; "More men don't volunteer because they are not asked. There are so many opportunities for volunteers even if they only put in one hour a week. Any retired person who wishes to become a volunteer can go to the RSVP office and find a choice of jobs.

"A good volunteer organization will tell a volunteer what to do and give good guidance.

Many organizations are eager to have volunteers. The Red Cross needs people all over the city. There are jobs open in First Aid, Water Safety and service to military families.

"If it weren't for the volunteers many organizations like the Red Cross couldn't exist " (E.G.)

Volunteering starts young for Mike Brown Last spring Mike Brown was named one of 12 Volunteens by the Omaha Jaycees. Mike, the son of Phyllis and Elliot Brown, was chosen for his work with the North Omaha Family Mental Health Clinic Mike was recruited for volunteer duty by his mother who worked for the Clinic which is under the auspices of Eastern Nebraska Community Office of Mental Health. fering help to families with emotionally disturbed children.

Mike acted as a role model for children from single parent families without lathers.

He assisted his mother by playing games with the children while Phyllis worked with other members of the family. Mike entertained and educated the children by bringing items from the school science lab.

"I like helping people. The mental health field is interesting to me. Through my volunteer work I learned about mental illness," Mike said. "The children 1 worked with were just like any other kids but they had more problems. I learned to accept them as they are.

"Sometimes 1 would come away feeling depressed because the situation didn't seem to be any better. But I tried to give as much positive reinforcement as possible, and felt that I had done something good."

"One weekend we had a six-year-old boy come to our house. He helped us paint the shed and actually ended up painting my shoe," Mike said.

When Phyllis changed jobs and became the education liaison for high school age youth at Richard Young Memorial Hospital, Mike again, helped out. He entered a locked ward to tutor a girl in geometry so she could complete her sophomore year of high school.

As might be expected from someone who is interested in helping other people, Mike is planning to become a doctor. He has been accepted into the Medical Education Program at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Thirty-five freshmen are accepted to medical school conditional to maintaining their grades. The advantage to this program is the students do not have to concentrate on science but can take a broad selection of courses.

Mike, a June graduate of Brownell-Talbot, intends to major in the humanities.

Mike maintained an A average during his junior and senior years. He received an award (or the highest four-year cumulative grade point average. And this was while working about 20 hours each week at the Marriott Reservation Center during his senior year. (E.G.)

A mitzvah for Omaha

By Morris Mallne Once upon a time, in a far off land called Cambodia, there lived a young woman named Ung Huoy Nam. Like most women of her lime and place she married, had a child, and attempted to live a life of joy and happiness among her friends and relatives.

Unfortunately, this was not to be. Death and discord tore her land, and to escape with her life, Huoy fled.

After much suffering, she ended up in a refugee camp with her daughter, and nephew. The remainder of her family in Cambodia — dead or missing.

A ray of hope entered Huoy's life when she was invited to settle in Omaha as a guest of the Jewish Federation of Omaha.

When the trio of survivors arrived here, they were penniless, shoeless, without possessions, and in relatively poor health.

At that time, this curious reporter asked them through a translator if they had ever heard the word, Jew. They had not. They came from a Buddhist country and had little knowledge of other people and other religions.

It was almost a year ago to the day that this woman arrived in Omaha.

The needs of this new family group were immediately attended to by a corps of volunteers headed by Shirley and Leonard Goldstein.

The Goldsteins had been given the responsibility by the Jewish Federation. Other volunteers, Toby and Marshall Forbes, Shelley Ban, and Nancy Epstein, joined the resettlement process.

They supplied housing, food, English- lessons, job training, medical attention, and handled the thousands of details necessary to rehabilitate a destitute family.

Then, something unexpected happened. Something good. Something wonderful.

Ung Huoy Nam and MuonSrey are Joined In marriage.

Huoy met Muon Srey, of Chicago, a refugee who had been in the country almost four years. He had a good job, and he proposed marriage to Huoy.

They were married earlier this month — and what a celebration. Cambodian friends from Chicago drove to Omaha, and other friends from their neighborhood joined hi the festivities.

Through it all, the Federation's volunteers walked every step, saw to every need, and literally helped to tie the knot of marriage.

The marriage ceremony took place in three parts: an evening of invitation to the spirits of dead relatives to join in the occasion and bless the young people, and a morning service with a traditional Cambodian ceremony.

The final part occurred when the Buddhist couple stood before a Lutheran minister in the home of the Goldsteins — a Jewish home.

In recognition of the role played by Jewish volunteers in the resettlement of Huoy, the minister and bridegroom added a final touch to the wedding ceremony.

The Cambodian bridegroom broke the glass, and mazel tov resounded throughout the room.

And now, Huoy has gone to Chicago, hopefully, to live happily ever after.

A fairy tale? No. Just, perhaps the greatest mitzvah ever performed by the Jewish community of Omaha.

"To me a Jew is neither a specific

ethnic or rejigious or cultural designation. To me a Jew is a special kind of man whatever his race or color or religion: a man who has learned the bitter art of survival and the ability to endure adversity with dignity: a man who has dared to be different when the costs of difference sometimes were life itself.

"But he is no member of a superrace and for dark periods in history men who thought they were meipbers of a super-race believed he could be exterminated. I sat in rooms as a foreign correspondent in the blackout hole of Berlin during World War II and talked with members of one supposed super-race who thought to practice genocide against a people much older and wiser than themselves. And as they mechanically mouthed the philosophical insanities that had been programmed into them by a madman, this reporter, a Hawaiian-born Roman Catholic of German American parentage mentally and morally became a Jew. Volunteers aid Red Cross program at Temple Israel

Boy Scouting is highly rewarding Larry Roitstein has been active in the Boy Scout program ever since he joined the Cub Scouts at the age of eight.

Since that time he has participated in scouting at many levels from assistant scoutmaster to instructor for the Ahamo dancers.

Larry's first introduction to scouting was through his father, Morris, who was scoutmaster of Troop 31.

"I owe everything I am today to my father because he kept my interest in scouting. For 30 years scouting has been a part of my life," Larry said.

"We have had 19 Eagle Scouts since 1971," Larry said. For me to present a boy with the Eagle Scout award is the most rewarding thing I can ever do. A person never realizes how important an Eagle Scout badge is until years later. It means he has leadership qualities and is a little bit better than anybody else."

The major project for the 1980-81 New Year is to complete our plans to determine whether we will be able to build and support a new long term nursing facility and apartment complex for the elderly.

The Federation Board meetings will continue to be open at all times for community input. Our officers, board and staff are always willing to listen to the community for direction in the decision making process. The Federation Officers and Board of Directors have been elected by the community, to represent the community, and welcomes opinions expressed by members of the Omaha Jewish community.

Service to others is the rent we pay for our room on earth.

The great violinist, Nicolo Paganlni, willed his marvelous violin to his native city of Genoa, but on the condition that it must never be played upon. The condition was unfortunate, for it Is one peculiarity of wood that as long as it is used and handled, it wears but slightly, but as soon as it Is discarded, it begins to decay.

The lovely-tone violin has indeed decayed in Its beautiful case, and is valueless, except as a relic. The moldering instrument is a reminder of the truth that life withdrawn from service to others becomes useless.

"What shall one do to get the most out of life?" was a question put by a pagan philosopher to Rabbi Joshua.

The Rabbi answered, "You should forget about yourself, give yourself to the world, and the whole eternal world will be yours."

Are we living lives of coherence, integrity, and high purpose or, without realizing It perhaps, a r e we a l l o w i n g o u r judgments and our behavior to be unduly influenced by the abundance of commercial, political, and artistic fakery and flimflam that engulfs us today?

It is not a matter of style per se that is the issue. An artist may work in a style that is traditional, modern, or avant garde (Picasso worked In all three at various times), and still be authentic — or a faker.

Picasso's compatriot, the surrealist painter Salvador Dali, advises young artists, "Begin by drawing and painting like the old masters; after that, do 'as you wish and you will always be respected."

Authenticity, then, arises from attachment to, or, at least, a profound awareness of Life, we say, is an art. "Today the wandering Jew wanders no more. Nor does he wonder who he is or what he is.

"He stands like a beacon light in a world that has often been darkened by the shame of racial and religious hatred. He glows inwardly and outwardly with the knowledge that while he is imperfect like all of his fellow men, he has given the world an historic lesson in survival. Survival with dignity and confidence and courage and grace.

"Whether intellectual prince or peasant, today's Jew has done what millions who went before him tried but could not do. He has proved to the world that to be a Jew Is still something special and something different. But the artificial inferiority complex that was laminated on his psyche by centuries of oppression is gone forever. It was blasted away by the rise of Israel, a tiny

state in a vast hostile land that seems to be all muscle but has left room for much heart.

"And yet, this same home that becons the homeless from all over the world continues to hold out to its historic enemies friendship with one hand while It clings to Its rifle with the other. And it is our view that it is the hand that holds the rifle — that eventually will end the current troubles in the Middle East. Today, strong, proud and determined Israel is more united than ever before and it belongs not to the Jewish alone but to ail the world. In our view il is a flesh and blood statue of liberty.

"And it is in this context that we salute and honor Israel, to say as a proud American acutely aware of his own nation's bloody battles IOT survival, we recognize you for what you are: a brother in an imperfect world, striving for what we strive for — the dignity of all men — and their inherent right to be free. Israel has caught the torch of liberty... and to her we say hold it high. And let no force on earth ever dim its light much less extinguish its flame."

A New Year This year's Rosh Hashanah Card from UNICEF is a gold menorah reproduced from a 14th century Sephardic manuscript by courtesy of the National Library of Portugal in Lisbon where the illuminated book is now preserved. Carrying a traditional New Year's message in both English and Hebrew, the cards are available in packets of ten with goldfoil lined envelopes.

This multi-national offering symbolizes the basic policy of the United Nations Children's Fund, a nonpolitical humanitarian organization which considers all children deserving of aid without discrimination on the grounds of race, sex, creed, nationality or political belief.

Because of this, UNICEF has always been

able to provide humanitarian aid to victims on "both sides" of conflicts in the Middle East, East Africa, Indochina and other areas of military or political turmoil.

Need some electrical work done in your home or your plumbing repaired? Just call Dan Greenfield, senior volunteer and general handyman at the Jewish Community Center. He's always willing to lend a hand where he can.

Born in a small town outside of Kiev, Russia, Mr. Greenfield and his mother Molly and brother Max, went to great lengths to get to the United . States. Five-year-old Dan left Russia with his brother and mother in 1918, for Rumania.

"I spent two years in Rumania to get a passport," Mr. Greenfield recalled.

After finally receiving passports, the mother and young sons went to England and straight on to the United States from there. All together, the migration process was a long one for the small family.

"It took us almost three years to get from Russia to the United States," Mr. Greenfield retold the adventure. "1 was eight years old when I came to the U.S. My father was already over here."

The three were reunited with father Nathan in Omaha. He had had his own problems getting to the United States. Nathan was a soldier in the Russian Army. Together with two other army buddies, he deserted the Russian Army when he got ov"er to Germany. The three soldiers made a similar route from Europe to the United States that Nathan's family would take years later, entering England and then traveling to the United States.

One of the soldiers had a brother living in Omaha, so all three decided to travel to the midwest to put down roots.

Because Mr. Greenfield's father had established citizenship in the United States before his family came to meet him, Dan was automatically a U.S. citizen upon reachIng the country.

Nathan signed up in the United States Armed Forces after coming to the United States, and was just about to be shipped abroad when the Armistice was signed, according to Mr. Greenfield.

The family set up house at 14th and Cass Streets in Omaha, later moving to 21st and Seward Streets.

The last addition to the family, Jean, was born in Omaha. Nathan worked as a housepalnter to support the family.

Mr. Greenfield attended Kellom School. He later went to Technical High School, where he studied steno and printing and was an avid swimmer.

"I was going out for the swim team, but it was the Depression and I had to work, " h e said.

The youth delivered papers yhile attending school, and graduated from Tech High in 1933.

During the 1930's, Mr. Greenfield continued his interest in swimming by becoming a swimming instructor at the old Jewish Community Center. He taught for about 10 years under the direction of Mannie Seigel at the JCC. As a youth, Mr. Green'field belonged to the JCC for about 15 years.

In 1937, Mr. Greenfield began what was to become a long stint with Union Pacific Railroad in Omaha.

He started out as a laborer for the railroad, and eventually worked his (Continued on Page 81)

In 1937 Mr. Greenfield married Alice Goldberg, a native of New Orleans. The couple had one daughter, Pat, who now lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. Mrs. Greenfield died in May of 1976.

Faithful to Union Pacific for a total of 37'£ years, he received extensive training and experience in the electrical and plumbing departments, which accounts for a few of the many skills he uses today as a handyman.

After a long and successful career with Union Pacific, Mr. Greenfield retired in August of 1975 to do "What I'm doing right now — loafing," he jokes.

"My wife and I started coming up here (to the Jewish Community Cen-

ter) after I retired," he explained.

A driving force behind Mr. Greenfield's beginnings in volunteer work at the Jewish Community Center was Sam Goldberg, who contacted him to ask if he could help out at the Center.

The senior volunteer began helping with the Family League as a handyman/jack of all trades. He did electrical work and plumbing for people through the JCC. "I even painted a couple of apartments for them," he added.

Mr. Greenfield also assisted with various work projects at Boys Town at the time.

"With these three things, plumbing, electrical work and painting, I'm pretty handy," he admits.

"Mollie got me started here," he said.

He also helps out in the kitchen of the JCC, where he assists the cook, takes food out to the dining room, and serves coffee for the Monday and Tuesday lunches.

In addition to helping out in the Center, Mr. Greenfield also does volunteer work for the Hadassah. He picks up clothing for the organization, helps build shelves, and lends ai hand wherever he is needed.

Dan's volunteerism doesn't end here, but he extends himself in his own neighborhood, helping out a paralyzed neighbor and some widowed neighbors with electrical and plumbing repairs.

Continuing his community spirit, Mr. Greenfield tends a neighborhood garden near his home. He has planted and harvested the garden for the past three years, taking over the gardening chores a renter had started before the owner moved back to the property.

Mr. Greenfield attributes his gardening skills to his childhood, when his parents tended a garden in their yard.

"It keeps me busy and doing something when I'm around the house, "he added.

Another of the senior volunteer's many hobbies is fishing, which often takes him out of state on extended trips.

"I started fishing when I started working for the railroad," he said.

Mr. Greenfield shared in the sport with his wife.

"I went up to Canada twice with her right after I retired," he recalled.

He has also kept up his enthusiasm for swimming, doing a quarter of a mile in the Center pool once or twice a week.

Mr. Greenfield is a member of Senior Adults, Old Timers, and has belonged to B'nai B'rith for one year and the Elks Club for twelve years.

Ask Morrie Epstein â&#x20AC;&#x201D; he knows the program Do you want to know what's on the agenda for entertainment at the Jewish Community Center? Just ask Morrie Epstein, senior volunteer and entertainment chairman for Senior Adults at the JCC. Morrie Epstein enjoys a game of cards after an Old Timers meeting.

The second youngest of three brothers and three sisters, Epstein was born June 10, 1911 in Omaha. His parents, both natives of Kiev, Russia where they met and married, came to Omaha in 1908.

Epstein attended Lake School and Omaha Technical School from where he graduated in 1930.

"I didn't go to the university because I had to help out with the family," he said.

Continuing his early beginnings in the newspaper business as a delivery boy, Epstein went to work (or the old Omaha Bee News in 1933 as manager of the Dispatch Department. Later as he gained more experience in the business, he was promoted to manager of the Classified Advertisement Department.

Epstein's long and varied career took a different turn when he decided to leave the Bee News in 1935.

"I quit when I heard they were closing up," he explained the change in jobs.

Moving on to a new line of work, Epstein went to work for Graham Ice Cream Company, where he was a candymaker.

"When liquor came in (the end of prohibition)," he went to work for Monarch Liquor, a wholesale liquor business. He took charge of the shipping department, where he remained for two years.

Most of Epstein's working years were spent at Venger and Sons, a wholesale tobacco and candy business. He worked as a buyer for the business, dealing directly with salesmen who came to the office. After 38 years with the company, Epstein decided on retirement.

"When they sold out, I thought I might as well retire," he said.

The business world's loss was the Jewish Community Center's gain, when* Epstein came to the JCC in 1974 to volunteer his aid.

After viewing the senior programs, he decided to try and "liven it up" with the help of Mollie Delman, program director.

"I like to do things for. different people and keep them happy,"he explained his reasons for doing volunteer work. "I'll go to hospitals and visit people and call them up and wish them 'Happy Birthday!' "

Epstein finds out about different people in the community through the staff at the Jewish Community Center, magazines, bulletins and newspapers.

In addition to making contact with different community members, Epstein serves as entertainment chairman for the Senior Adults. This task involves booking all entertainment and special events for the groups.

"The days I'm not doing anything here (at the JCC), I'm there (at Methodjst Hospital)," hesald.

Among Epstein's hobbies is playing cards with the Old Timers. When he was in school, he was active in several ball leagues.

"In my younger days, I played a lot of baseball and softball," he said.

Other activities include trips to Lincoln, Sioux City, Kansas City and the Catskill Mountains.

Widowed in 1979, Epstein has a son, Dr. Gary Epstein,.a dentist in Omaha, and a daughter Harriet Jean Slgel in Fresno, California, and four grandchildren. (R.E.L,)

"I just look around and get ideas. They come to me," he said.

Some of the musical programs, booked a month in advance, include family singers, as well as local actors and actresses.

"I had St. Mary's College put on 'Fiddler on the Roof," he said.

In addition to local musical talent, Epstein has had all the cantors and rabbis in Omaha to the Jewish Community Center to put on programs. Epstein also serves as a member of the program committee for the Old Timers group at the center.

The "something extra" Morrie Epstein puts into his volunteer work, above and beyond the call of duty, is his correspondence with such notables as Governor J.J. Exon, Senator Ed Zorinsky, Congressman John Cavanaugh and President Jimmy Carter, whom he writes to about the senior program director at the Center, Mollie Delman.

Commendations have come In through the mail for Mrs. Delman from this correspondence, as well as from local officials such as Mayor Al Veys.

"She's the kind of person I like to do things for," Epstein explains his reasons for telling people about Mollie. Epstein also invites many of these people to come down to the Center and address the Old Timers group.

In addition to this correspondence, Epstein also writes on occasion to Menachem Begin.

As if the JCC was not enough to keep him busy, Epstein also does volunteer work at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, where he works at the information desk for four hours a day one or two days a week.

The ram9§ horn and its significance

By Rabbi Dr. David Geffen Along with the reed, the Shofar or ram's horn is one of the oldest musical instruments known to man. Appearing 69 times in the Bible, it is first mentioned in Exodus 19:16 at the theophany on Sinai. It was used to announce the Jubilee Year and the Proclamation of Freedom throughout the land (Leviticus 25:9). "Then shall thou cause the Shofar to sound . . . and you shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants, and you shall return every man to his possession . . . and you shall return every man to his family." This, incidentally, is the verse engraved on the Philadelphia Liberty Bell.

The shofar may be sounded only in daytime and — outside the Temple — not on Shabbat.

At various times it has been used to announce death, fasts, excommunications, funerals and the entry of the Shabbat.

It is also used during the inauguration ceremony of a new President in Israel.

The shofar is authenticated by musicologists as one of the most ancient of instruments.

It has never fallen into disuse because annually theplainlivc tone of the ram's horn is heard

anew. The initial sounding of the Shofar each year Is during the weekday mornings of Elul, the month before Rosh Hashanah. After the recitation o! the penitential Psalm 27, the "tekiah," the long single note, the "teruah," the nine staccato notes and the "shevarim," the three broken notes, are sounded.

This is a daily act except for the Sabbath and the day before Rosh Hashanah and it is a vivid reminder that each individual must prepare himself for the Days of Judgment ahead.

In fact the "Baal Tokeah' — the Shofar blower — must get the ram's horn to emit 100 notes on each day of Rosh Hashanah as well as the majestic "tekiah godolah" at the end of Yom Kippur. Therefore, whether he uses the small curved shofar or the monumental spiral black or brown shofar, the 'Baal Tokeah1 must have prepared well enough so that when called upon during the service he will cajole the right notes out of his unique instrument.

This year and every year it is important to recall the words of the prophet Isaiah when we hear the sound of our ancient musical instrument. "A great shofar shall be blown and they shall come that have been lost in the land of Assyria and dispersed in the land of Egypt."
