Our front page photograph was taken at Beth El Synagogue Jan. 27,1980 during the first . ceremony of its kind in Omaha — the completion of a Torah.

We like to think that a religious ceremony of this nature taking place in Omaha is _Jndicatiye of a strong, viable,, Jewish community. We would like to believe tha t Judaism in Omaha will flourish in the future as it has in the past.

The type of Jewish life that will be available in Omaha in the 1980s certainly concerns us just as the future of our secular life does.

Because of the overpowering interest in our future—as human beings, as American Jews, as Omahans — we are presenting this special Passover issue on the theme: "the 1980s."

It is clear from several interv wswith representatives of the Jewish ederation and Omaha synagogues, that this decade we are entering will be full of problem ;; some which we are already facingaind others t latwewill encounter as the 1980s progres Coping with inflation, adju: ing to changes in the community make-up, improvi g synagoguefederation relations, attractin new people, helping Soviet Jews, and planning for ur elderly. These are some of the challenges to le Omaha Jewish Community. In 10 years when e review the 1980s, hopefully we can be satisfied at we met the challenges of the decade and v were equal to them.

One problem the Omaha J /ish community, and indeed the entire general mmunity, will face this decade is inflation. The tx om line remains dollars. More dollars will be r uired in this decade to meet the needs of the Jewis community. Or, the Jewish community will have t sacrifice certain services they now take for grc ted. The catchword of the 1970s was consume. Anj hing is possible, there are no limitations. It ap ars that the theme of the 80s will be just the oppo ;e —conserve. ' To make up for the loss of c liars due to inflation, the Jewish Federati i; which serves as an umbrella organization for he Jewish community, is going to need i lore money. Money that comes from contribution; to the United Jewish Appeal, but perhaps more im wrtantly money that comes in the form of.endowm ;nts. Currently the Jewish Federation has an em owment a little over " $2 million. Louis Solomon, ex eutive director of the Federation hopes this figure > an be doubled, and that by 1985 the Omaha Jewish Federation will have an endowment of $5 million.

Another problem in our co nmunity is the

change in its make-up. Demographic studies indicate a declining population. While there, is a decrease in the birthrate, there is an increase in the number of single-parent families through either divorce or death.

A challenge will be to make these people feel part of the community. It is important that the , chiJdren should not feel that because they don't have two parents, they can't participate in certain activities; whether the Jewish Community Center or the individual synagogues sponsor the program.

Another change in the community make-up which is already present and increasing, is the number of intermarriages that occur. This trend has been going on for many years now. While synagogue and federation officials don't condone intermarriage, the hope is that the community can still reach out to these people. Perhaps one day the non- Jewish spouse might want to convert. We must think of the children who are involved. Programs should be instituted so that individuals in their homes will be involved in religious activities which currently are being experienced at the synagogues or the Jewish Community Center.

Currently none of the three rabbis allow intermarriages to take place in their synagogues, nor will they officiate at these marriages. This fact is something that most likely will not change in the 80s. It has been said by one of the rabbis expressing an Orthodox point of .view here, that the Jewish religion does mean to interfere in a person's love life and ask that person to sacrifice their relationship for their religion. The challenge, therefore, will be to cut down on the intermarriage rate.

There is yet another change in the community make-up. Singles. They have always been with us,

Louis B.Solomon, executive director, Jewish Federation of Omaha but their numbers are apparently increasing. This fact itself does not necessarily present a problem.

In interviews with several singles — our definition being someone post-college — it seems they are looking for something the community has not yet offered them. Some have tried "Our Gang" and liked it, and some have not. Others have tried special programs offered by the Jewish Community Center in the past and they express a feeling that many were unsatisfactory. Whose responsibility is it to provide programs? Federation officials believe the onus is with the singles.

Many of these singles describe the Jewish singles scene here as boring, dull and dead. Some of these men and women say they find it necessary sometimes to date someone who is not Jewish, simply because they want to go out. This could lead to intermarriage, they say, and it creates another challenge for our community. And here again we deny ourselves of potential Jewish leadership.

Perhaps the key to strengthening our Jewish community in the 80s will be the relationship between the synagogues and the Jewish Federation. A mlsperceptlon exists on both sides as to what the other can do. The rabbis generally view the Federation as a fundralslng institution only.

Some Federation officials view the synagogues as religious institutions only. To a certain degree, both of these observations are correct. The Federation's Constitution includes in its objectives lundralslng, and the synagogues are religious Institutions.

Religion, however, encompasses many different areas. It includes, for example, educational and cultural activities, just as fundratsing includes •'i these same activities. Just because the Federation has taken the lead on Soviet Jewry and Israel, does not mean the synagogues cannot make their own (Continued on Page 6)

Challenges of the 80s (Continued from Page 4 > contribution in these areas. Likewise, advances made in Jewish education by the synagogues can be made also by the Federation. All institutions are working toward the same goal.

The Federation does give money to different organizations as well as the synagogues. But the people who give money to the synagogues are for the most part the same people who give money to the Federation. Both institutions benefit from each other..

There are Jews in Omaha who are unaf filiated with a synagogue, yet they belong to the Federation. The Federation has offered to help the synagogues locate these people by making their membership lists available to them. This help by the Federation is just one example of where mutual cooperation can benefit the community.

The three synagogue presidents have been meeting on a regular basis to discuss common problems and find solutions to them. Occasionally they meet with representatives of the Federation to find further ways of working together. Perhaps in the near future the Omaha Rabbinical Council can be revived and the rabbis can further benefit the Jewish community by their exchanges.

Earlier mention was made of a declining Jewish population in Omaha. One way to bolster the community's size is to attract new people. Steps are

being taken by the Federaton to bring people here.

If the entire community works together, maybe more couples will be attracted to Omaha and build their careers and families here.

One group of newcomers who are arriving in Omaha are Soviet Jews; Another challenge of the 80s .will be to continue the struggle to get Jews out of Russia. For those Jews who are released and who do come to Omaha; the community must continue to help provide housing and a Job for them.

Many of the Soviet Jews who arrive in Omaha know very little about their religion. They had no opportunity to learn it in Russia. It should be a goal of our community to show them the beauty of their religion and to get these Soviet Jews active in Jewish community affairs. ' Omaha is, and always has been a dynamic Jewish community. Leadership, both men and women, has been a stellar part of our city's scene for more than four score years. This has been and still is pioneer country. In times of crisis, the community may have to shed old molds, and create new models, to cope with crisis, to combat challenges arid to mark new ways of excellence for their active, warm, very much alive city.

If the state of Israel can grow, thrive in the midst of this wary world, then we in Omaha can rise to our challenge in the 80s.—D.D.

A legacy for the future He has many names. Some are respectful: Rabbi Katz, Reverend Katz, Mr. Katz; other names are more personal: teacher, father, grandfather. No matter what name is used, the man people are addressing is loved and respected. He is as much a part of Beth El Synagogue as he is a part of the Omaha Jewish community.

Recently Mr. Katz, 83, observed his second bar mitzvah. It w;as more of a celebration, however, and it gave the entire community an opportunity, to show their appreciation for all Mr. Katz has done for them.

The Sabbath selected for this honor was Shabbat 'Shiran. We read in the Torah the song of thanks sung . by the Children of Israel after they successfully crossed the Red Sea. It was an appropriate selection.

Hundreds of well-wishers filled Beth El's main sanctuary for the bar mitzvah. At a special ceremony the week before a new Torah was added to Beth El's ark, dedicated to Mr. Katz. Contributions from devoted friends and students paid for the $10,000 Torah. . After the excitement of the bar mitzvah abated Mr. Katz talked about what his responsibilities now are to the community for bestowing such a great honor upon him. "If I was younger I'd take on more duties," he said, "but I'm an old man. My eyes are no longer as good as they once were. If they were stronger I'd read, study and teach more. Things were different after my first bar mitzvah."

Seventy years ago in Russia Mr. Katz celebrated his first bar mitzvah under very different conditions.

"First of all, my bar mitzvah was on a Thursday," Mr. Katz said. "The big kind of bar mitzvah I had here in February we never had there. Along with being called to the Torah, we also had to give a lesson on the Halacha (Jewish Law).

"At that bar mitzvah my rabbi asked me what did I do before this day'of bar mitzvah. I told him I learned one page of Gemmaraa-day and I tutored for a ruble a week. The rabbi told me to increase my learning and study two pages of Gemmara a day. 1 did."

Mr. Katz emphasised that he studied the Gemmara, which is commentaries on the Talmud, rather than the Bible. "My rabbi told me Bible is for the goyim, a good Jew should study Gemmara. In fact, I rarely even studied Mishna. It was always Gemmara," he said.

Mr. Katz believes one reason he never studied Mishna is that in those days, rabbis only spoke from the pulpit twice a year. Shabbat Shuva, (the Sabbath of return) the Sabbath that falls in between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and Shabbat Hagadol (the great Sabbath), the Sabbath which immediately precedes Passover. The rest of the year visiting scholars would deliver the sermon.

Mr. Katz was born on a farm near the town of Vikemer in Russia, in 1897 the same farm his father and grandfather were born on. "Actually, I was born in Lithuania, but today it is part of Russia. There were two villages near our farm, situated somewhat like • Omaha and Council Bluffs. The village I lived in was occupied by Roman Catholics. Across the river Greek Catholics ruled the village. Already the Russians were . beginning to'Russify'Lithuania."

Growing up on a farm and being "the only Jewish family in the whole area," some of Mr. Katz's favorite activities were horseback riding, fishing and boating, "f didn't, want to leave when it became time to begin attending cheder," he said, "I was only four years old."

Mr. Katz remembers the first time he walked into a * synagogue. "I felt like a small fish in a big pond. The synagogue looked so big and so beautiful, it reminded me of a church. At the time I only spoke Russian. At the end of the service I blurted out what a beautiful church this is. I embarrassed my father and felt very bad at the time." • A few years later, at age 10, Mr. Katz entered his first yeshlva. During the next few years he attended different yeshivot because World War I disrupted studies. At different times during the War both Russians and Germans drove him Into hiding. "I recall one year around the High Holidays we hid in caves and peoples' attics. Some nights we could look out of our hiding places and see the camp fires of the

German soldiers. And'yet we were more afraid of the Cossaks than the Germans,'' he said. « During the War when Mr. Katz was 17, he returned to the family farm. The Germans entered the nearby village and Mr. Katz became an interpreter between the occupying Germans and local Russians. "I became friends with some of the German officers," he said.

In 1917, Mr. Katz received his first rabbinical ordination. Through a series of questions and answers with the head rabbi, Mr. Katz passed and went to a small town, Kurkly, nine miles from his farm. He stayed there six years. He received his second , ordination in 1920. "It was important to me to receive this other ordination because the second rabbi had a bigger reputation, and It carried more weight," he said.

Mr. Katz rarely gave speeches at his synagogue in Russia. "I was never a'good speaker," he recalled, "but I was pretty popular with rabbis in the area anyway. My memory was good. When rabbis would get together and they wanted to quote a specific verse of the Torah or Talmud, I knew it and I recited It. People would always ask me questions," he said.

During the War, while Mr. Katz studied to be a rabbi and even after his ordination, finding professional teachers for yeshivot was difficult. As a result, Mr. Katz did a lot of teaching in Russia. When

he came to the United States in 1923, he was also a teacher. "I was born to be a teacher," he said.

His first position in the United States was in Fond du lac, Wisconsin. He remained there for nine months before moving to Virginia, Minn, where he stayed for three years. He then moved to Fargo, N.D. He was there 17 years. In these cities the only teacher of Judaica was Mr. Katz. He also established in Fargo a series of lectures on Judaism for the non-Jewish community.

"My first lecture was scheduled for a church basement. Only 25 chairs were set up. By the time the lecture began, they had to pull In more chairs and still people were forced to stand. I made some good friends there. One man, who later became a minister, sent me a copy of the New Testament with a beautiful inscription thanking me for the lectures I gave."

Mr. Katz came to Omaha in 1944. The synagogue asked him to serve as a bar mitzvah tutor. Along with Cantor Emeritus Aaron Edgar, he prepared students for being called to the Torah and reciting their haftorah. "I wasnot a teacher,perse,"Mr. Katz said, "bat when a teacher was ill, I substituted. My main area was working with bar mitzvah age students.

Mr. Katz wanted to do more, so he organized his own adult education class twice a week. He taught basic Hebrew so people could speak the language. "I believe I was the first person in town to offer these kind of classes,'' he said.

Mr. Katz expanded his offerings by holding a Talmud class for men before the evening mlnyan services. "About 10 to 15 people showed up, including then Rabbi David Goldstein, to learn from me. We studied Mishna instead of Gemmara because I thought it would be easier," he said.

Mr. Katz's "pre-servlce school" continued'for many years and still exists today, although mishna is not taught. "People who have a death in the family and they will be coming to services daily want to learn the service. They come early and I go over it with them. Then they lead our mlnyan service." Other people come early to learn how to read maftir, and still others come early to talk to Mr. Katz about what ever Is on their mind.

What does Mr. Katz feel about the future. "I never was a prophet of doom," he sald?"'I have always been optimistic and I remain that way. There used to be many real yeshivot in the United States, and now there are very few, yet Judaism has survived.

"Second generation Americans are losing touch with the Old Country, and surely third generation Americans will be even further removed from it. I think today people get the knowledge of Judaism, if not the practice. But I still have great hope for Omaha Jewry."

While all: Katz has warm feelings for the entire Jewish community, Beth El holds a special spot in his heart. "I love Beth El. When I compare It to the few congregations I worked at, it is the highest level. We have had wonderful rabbis, Goldstein and (Myer) Kripke. I think Beth El has a good future."

And what of Mr. Katz's future. While admitting that his vision isn't what it used to be and neither is his strength, he still plays an integral role in the daily functioning of Beth El. He leads, or appoints people to lead, the daily minyans both morning and evening, and he reads Torah Shabbat morning if someone can't show up, or there aren't enough people who can read it.

Chances are that Mr. Katz will continue in these activities. Living next door to the synagogue, he is always there when the synagogue needs him. When thinking about his work in Fargo "and Virginia he asks, "Who reads Torah there? The people I'taught."

Here in Omaha, the Beth El Torah readers are also all people Mr. Katz taught. And the people who lead the minyans are people who have been instructed by Mr.Katz.

Mr. Katz's legacy to Beth El will not be the Torah dedicated In this honor last February. Rather, It will be the people who read from that Torah in future years, who instruct their children how to read from that torah and who live like Jews as described in that Torah. It is a legacy which is richly deserved, and one that will last for many generations. D. D.

The present Dr. Philip Sher Home Is located on north 52nd street. Plans are being drawn for the construction of a new home for the elderly.

Changes seen in care for Jewish aged Chances are that in 10 years a review of the 1980s will show the most change in the Omaha Jewish community occurred in areas pertaining to the elderly. With demographic studies indicating an increasingly older community, a push is on to improve and enhance present services available to the aged, . Two projects in particular are currently under review by the Jewish Federation: a new home for the aged; and custodial care apartments for elderly people who do not need to be institutionalized. The • completion of these two projects would significantly alter in a positive way the state of elderly services now offered in Omaha.

A number of opportunities now exist for the . elderly in Omaha to participate in educational, cultural and social activities. According to Ben , Laub, executive director of the Bureau for the 1 Aging, there are approximately 1400 Jewish people above age 60 in Omaha. "Older adult programs and the Sher Home see about 500 people a month. Either these people live at the Home or they come here," Laub said. ' The number of people who attend elderly programs may seem low, but Laub says aging services and programs are not needed for 30 percent to 50 percent of our elderly—a figure twice the national average.

"The 80s will be different. There will be changes in the number and the status of the elderly," Laub said. "A much more educated, healthy person . . . a product of divorce or death, a more mobile person, more of an advocate, TJlese will be the elderly of the 80s..As a result, tjfSTdirection of our programs will have to change. We used to be concerned with groups of people, but not in the future. A need for more individualized types of efforts will exist. The elderly wH4*io longer be a homogeneous' community, but very diversified.

"Because of medical advances, people are going to live longer. Currently the average age of applicants to the Dr. Sher Home is over 80. In the future the age could rise to 90. People who do finally enter the Home will have medical problems that cures are unknown for now. People will suffer from diseases and need more medical attention when .they do come here, " h e said. "" . Laub is a strong supporter of building a new homejor the aged and apartments for the elderly, • - but he recognizes that problems do exist in realizing these goals.

The major stumbling block facing both these plans is the financing, particularly with regard to building a new Home. The new Home might be built adjacent to the Jewish Community Center. In fact, the Home could be physically attached to the

Center. Louis Solomon, executive director of the Jewish Federation is in favor of the new Home concept, provided adequate funds can be secured to maintain it.

"I would like to see a new Home," Solomon said, "but the only feasible way I can see to build it is if we have enough dollars to include a permanent endowment. Otherwise, I would say don't build it. It will become a burden for the community." Solomon is currently conducting a pre-solicitation campaign -to determine if funds exist for a new Home.

Funding the proposed apartments, which also could be located adjacent to the JCC, Is another problem. "These apartments can't be built without government funding. This community doesn't have the resources to build apartments by themselves."

So says Alan Goodman, Jewish Federation controller.

The Federation is currently making an application to the Federal Government for approvalto build HUD 202 housing apartments. A 202 approval would give a lender a guarantee of payment on the funds loaned to the Federation to build the apartments. It would also give the Federation lower than market interest rates on loans.

Concurrent with their application for 202 approval is a request for Section 8 subsidies on apartment rent. If both applications are approved, the rent charged to residents of the apartments would be no more than 25 percent of their monthly income. The balance of the rent would be paid by the Government. In this way th§ apartments would be self-sustaining.

The building of apartments, Goodman is quick to point out, does not mean the Federation is going into the real estate business. "We are not trying to compete with anyone," he said.

Laub agrees. "We have never offered the elderly anything like this before. It will give them a chance to be independent, but if they need help, we can provide it."

Allan Greene, director of Planning andJ Budgeting for the Federation, also sees a benefit in the apartments. "People who live in them can prepare their own meals, or they can eat in a cafeteria in the building. This way they are guaranteed at least one hot meal a day, if they want it. The location of the apartments is also a benefit.

Near the JCC these people would be able to participate in activities they ordinarily would not.

Isolation and loneliness make being old very difficult. The apartments would help ease the aging process," he said. ' Whether or not the apartments and a new Home are built, the future of Omaha's Jewish elderly will

surely change. "In five years the older adult program as we know it may be entirely different," Laub said.

"We may do things to keep people in the community since we cannot afford to bring them into the Home. A lot will depend on funding. Either the government will-give us more money, multiple funding will be increased, or we wijl use selective service in accepting applicants. That is, people who can afford the Home and those who really need it will be accepted. The rest, well this is still all unclear," he saicT "The 80s will be a time when people who have been taught to consume will have to conserve. "We are going to see people outlive their pensions because of inflation. Dollars will be tight due to this inflation and the increase in the numbers of aged people.

"I am optimistic about the Jewish community providing for the elderly, but I am less so on how much each person will actually get," Laub said.— D.D.

Meeting a new challenge SKelly Lustig likes challenges. During his 26 years in the United States Air Force he has met and conquered many challenging situations. On Feb. 29, he pinned on the silver star of a Brigadier General as recognition of his ability to get the job done.

Since July 1978, Gen. Lustig has been Deputy Chief of Staff, Engineering and Services for the Strategic Air Command (SAC). His responsibilities include overseeing the planning, budgeting, maintenance and construction programs at 29 major SAC bases all over the world. In addition, he is responsible for fire protection and crash rescue operations, family housing management, food services, laundry and dry cleaning services and billeting functions at those bases.

One of the exciting responsibilities that comes with Gen. Lustig's new rank is his assignment to fly in Looking Glass three or four times each month.

Looking Glass is the specially configured EC-135 aircraft that many people see flying over Southwest Omaha on its flight path to Offutt Air Force Base.

The plane is in the air at all times serving as an airborne command post for SAC in the event the Headquarters at Offutt is destroyed during a nuclear attack.

The road to SAC Headquarters and the rank of Air Force Brigadier General started out in Binghamton, New York, in a shoe store owned by Morris Cohen. Shelly had worked in the store since the age of 14. During Shelly's senior year of high school, Morris' son, Charles helped him receive an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. • ^/ "For me it was a thrill and an honor to participate in the competition»and to be named an

appointee to West Point," said Gen. Lustig. "It was an unanticipated honor because I hadn't planned to attend the Academy and pursue a military career.

But I knew it was agreat opportunity to get a college education without a financial struggle.

"In 1949, going t(/th^Military Academy was recognized as a markof prestige. It ranked with Yale, Harvard and Princeton and still does in my view. Regardless of financial circumstance I would have chosen the Military Academy."

What Shelly found at West Point, located on the beautiful Hudson River, was a tough rigorous program designed to build military officers. The first year was especially hard as a test of physical and psychological stamina. "Most graduates say they wouldn't dq it again for a million dollars, but I wouldn't substitute the experience for a million dollars," explained Gen. Lustig.

- Before the establishment of the United States Air Force Academy, a certain number of West Point graduates could elect to join the Air Force.

With his heart set on becoming a pilot, the newly commissioned Second lieutenant joined the Air Force in 1953.

"I really wanted to fly, but quickly found out that the thrill and sensation of flying wasn't what I thought it would be. I wouldn't have been the best pilot so I transferred to Loring Air Force Base in Maine as an intelligence officer. I thought an intelligence officer was involved in cloak-and dagger missions, but soon found out that my opportunity to work in counter espionage was slim.

After four days I was ready for something else."

engineering office to help build Loring Air Force Base. "The job was a tremendous challenge. I had to struggle to keep my head above water. The engineering subjects I took at the Academy helped, But there were a lot of dedicated professionals there who took the time to bring me up to speed. One in particular stands out, Brig. General (Ret) Archie Mayes who was the engineer in command and who later became the SAC Engineer.

"Since then with only a few exceptions my assignments in the military have been very challenging. It's unlikely that they could have been matched in any private or other public institution.

I 'm convinced that the key to attracting and keeping people in the military is providing challenging jobs.

"It is also important to be married to someone very special who can cope with the demands of a military lifestyle. I would not have lasted 26 years or made Brigadier Genera) without the strong support and companionship of a superb woman."

General Lustig met his wife, Marge, When they were growing up in Binghamton. They have two daughters, Nancy, 23, and Susan, 21. During the last 26 years Gen. Lustig has moved 14 times including assignments in Diyarbakir Air Base, Turkey, and Phu Cat Air Base, Republic of Vietnam, when his family could not accompany him. While living on various bases around the United States and in England, the Lustig family maintained their sense of Jewish identity. [ "The military is not a usual lifestyle for Jew," Gen. Lustig said. "I'm not terribly religious, but I have a great respect for the Jewish faith.. Both of my daughters were confirmed. I think it is1 important for all ethnic groups to continue the traditions that hold them together."

Gen. Lustig's most unusual religious experience in the military occurred in Turkey where he was stationed without his family for 15 months. He became a close friend of the Protestant Chaplain and attended Sunday morning services regularly.

He was surprised at the striking similarity, between the Protestant services and Jewish services that he had attended.

"I found out later that the Chaplain was sensitive to my being Jewish, and he had eliminated all references to the name Jesus Christ from the services. I didn't ask him to do that. I was president of the Protestant Men of the Chapel and sang in the Protestant choir. This certainly wasn't a Jewish experience in the traditional sense, but it was in the military religious sense."

According to Gen. Lustig, the decade of the 80s is shaping up as years of critical decision. "On the human side, the military will continue to face severe competition for good people who are willing to serve. From the standpoint of weaponry, we'jl need an increasing commitment of financial resources to insure oljr national survival and position as a wotTd power, second to none. How well we compete will depend on the support the military ' gets from the American people and their political leaders. . ~ •• "Hopefully, there will be a sustained reawakening among the publictjlthe need for a 3 strong military. ~?

Recent events In Iran and Afghanistan are already beginning to overshadow the negative imagery toward military preparedness that suffered as a result of the Viethamtimfllct. I'm confident the,American people will respond wisely in the 80s whenever our national interests are . threatened." —E.G. .

"When it came to the migration of Jews from Eastern Europe and Russia to the United States, the most pious and learned stayed behind.

Those less rooted in thetradition went to America. The more traditional of those who came here stayed in New York. The more venturesome went West, and eventually some ofthese Jews arrived in Omaha. Since the less committed and knowledgeable Jews came to the Midwest, that set the tone of Judaism found here today."

Some synagogue problems remain the same The first Jews arrived in Omaha in the early 1850s. Beth El Synagogue was established in 1929. In the beginning, only 75 families belonged to the Conservative synagogue. As the membership increased, the need arose for a new building. So in 1939 the present synagogue site at 49th and Farnam Streets was built. Only last year Beth E\ observed its jubilee.

Beth El has changed over the'years.

Almost 700 families now belong to the congregation. Yet according to the above theory recapitulated by Beth El Rabbi Kenneth Bromberg, some synagogue problems remain the same, their cause can be traced back to the ' first Jews who arrived here.

Continuing this theory, the first -institutions established by Omaha Jews were not of learning, but financial.

"Earning a living was more important," Rabbi Bromberg said. "Add to this the fact that Jews were a tiny minority, and it is understandable why this occurred."

Rabbi Bromberg believes a major deficiency at Beth Ei, as well as in the Jewish community at-large, is an in sufficient knowledge of Judaism. "There is a continuing and frustrating lack of Jewish knowledge in our Jewish community. There are, of course exceptions, but many people here treat Judaism on an ad hoc basis. 'Judaism is

what I feel now.' I don't agree with this philosophy," he said.

Rabbi Bromberg doubts any graduate of an Omaha Jewish religious school would score well on a standardized test on the religion. The rabbi would like to see this situation reversed, "since Judaism is structured in such a way that it cannot .thrive on ignorance." He suggests a two-year, four semester program — somewhat similar to a university — where students would have approximately 12 hours of class weekly. The study would be indepth, and directed toward all high school age students. *

"For the Jewish professional, Omaha is a place to start out in or pass through, but not to remain."

Center as an example. "The length of the program has been cut back and the course offerings are quite general."

Jewish education suffers here also because of the reputation Omaha has acquired. "For the Jewish professional," Rabbi Bromberg said, "Omaha is a place to start out or pass through, but not to remain. And in the classic, historic sense, Omaha is not a center of Jewish life. The city itself may not be big enough," he said.

Rabbi Bromberg, whose background includes educational work in Boston and Kansas City, said that in many ways the Omaha Jewish community is no different than the general population of the community. "In most respects, the community is anti-intellectual, especially the Midwest. We are not academic or contemplative. We are active'. It's not a putdown, the Omaha Jewish community is no better or no worse," he said.

Even with Jewish education here in its present state, Rabbi Bromberg believes Beth El is a strong institution.

Jewish adult education is no better, Synagogue attendance, however, does according to Rabbi Bromberg, not reflect that opinion. Nevertheless, he especiallyon a community model.

"Whenever the community gets together feels services are just one aspect of a synagogue, and are not necessarily an we descend to the lowest common , accurate barometer of a synagogue's denominator in the programs offered," strength. . he said. He cited the Adult Education Program at the Jewish Community "American Jews have taken a Protestant model. We regard synagogue attendance as a make-all and be-all. In the Christian religion, basically it's Sunday go to church. So there is a distortion. Synagogue attendance is important, but not the only index of Jewishness," he said.

Membership is one expression of a synagogue's strength. Many people have referredlo Beth El as an aging congregation. Rabbi Bromberg dismisses these statements calling them exaggerated. Indeed. He says there has been a slight increase in the numbers of young people — age 25-35 — who have Joined Beth El. In addition, the rabbi feels the synagogue's Men's Club is once again active after a period of dormancy.

Citing membership figures, Beth El President Donald Nogg also sees a strong synagogue. He believes young couples are joing Beth El, and while there could always be more young people, Beth El's share is better than the average Conservative congregation In the country.

The new decade will usher in many challenges to Beth El. Yet Bromberg and Nogg are optimistic that their synagogue will successfully meet these new challenges, and that Beth El will remain a strong viable Jewish institution in our community.

Another sign of Beth El's strength, according to Mr. Nogg, is the number of people involved in synagogue activities.

"More than simply a small corps of people, namely a board, is ac,tlve," he said. "United Synagogue Youth, Men's Club, Sisterhood, they are all strong."

Mr. Nogg believes Beth El and the Jewish community have changed over the years. "Today Is a different world than 35 years ago, " h e said. "1 was involved in Beth El then, not because of my parents, but because general social clubs didn't accept me. Now, of course, the Jew is accepted by society which is good, but it has its drawbacks; specifically, people are less interested in getting involved In the synagogue."

Another change Mr. Nogg sees is the role of women in the synagogue.

"Twenty years ago more married women were housewives and wanted to get out of the house, so they came to the synagogue or the Jewish Community Center. Today, many women work outside the home and they just want to relax at the end of the day. The synagogue is just not as important today in their lives as it was before."— D.D.

The community is changing The Omaha Jewish community in the 80s will be different than it was in the 70s. Changes in the community's make-up will be one of the reasons why. An increase in the number of single-parent families, intermarried couples and singles will play an important role in altering the shapetjf our • community. .

Our Jewish community no longer lives in a shtetl environment. Rather, we live in a very open society. A society which permits us to be far more loose than previous generations were. Living in an 'open society also creates stressful situations, and •perhaps is one reason why we are seeing an increase in the number of single-parent families through divorce, according toTempIe.israel Rabbi Sidney Brooks.

"Parents need to be together with their families," Rabbi Brooks said. "People get very involved with different organizations. Their presence at many meetings is important for the organization, but sometimes a hindrance for their personal lives. Sometimes we make people feel guilty if they don't show up somewhere for a meeting, when they should be at home with their family."

Rabbi Brooks also thinks we may be overorganizing things for children. "Do we have to keep them busy all the time?" he asks. He recalls some of his most enjoyable moments as a youth were

Children are hurt the most by divorce spent alone. It is the children, Brooks believes, who" are hurt the most by divorce because the family unit is not stabilized.

Divorce is an area where Beth El's Rabbi Kenneth Bromberg feels the synagogues and the Jewish Federation can work together to help the situation. "Until now this has been a neglected area. Potential'cooperation exists between the Judaism of the synagogues and the caseworkersof the Federation," he said.

Louis Solomon, executive director of the Jewish Federation, believes special programs have to be established to meet the needs of these families. He advocates some type of Jewish Big Brother and Big Sister program to re-establish the male and female models in these homes.

He also sees family support programs — both moral and financial as important. "When a parent receives his children for a weekend we should have some program set up so that parent has an idea of

what to do with the child. The Center should try to develop these programs. Synagogues could also help. At a congregational dinner maybe they could subsidize certain families so they would attend."

Mr. Solomon also believes the Federation and synagogues could work together to provide camp scholarships for these children. "Camp can be very important for children," he said, "but sometimes there is not enough support money to pay for it."

Intermarriage Another change in the community make-up is intermarried couples. The number of people who intermarry locally andjiationally is rising.

Presently all three rabbis do not allow these couples to get married in their synagoguges, nor will they officiate at ceremonies involving intermarriage.

One rabbi, Isaac Nadoff of Beth Israel, has strong views on this subject. "Religion does mean to interfere with your love life," he said. "Religion does ask for the big sacrifice. Give up the person you love for your religion." < Rabbi Nadoff does notice a trend among intermarried couples — the non-Jewish spouse converting. He does not, however, believe a special outreach should be made to get the non-Jewish spouse to convert, "We are not missionaries," he said, "that is not our role."

While not advocating as strong a position as Rabbi Nadoff, Rabbi Brooks does prefer that people hiarry within the faith. "Primarily because I think \ the chances of happiness are better with religious unity," he said. If the non-Jewish spouse converts, Rabbi Brooks is happy. Equally important Rabbi Brooks feels, is having an identity of Jewish life. "If these people convert, we must meet them and welcome them. There are plenty of born Jews who turn away from their religion, let's meet those who convert to Judaism,"

Singles There are many reasons for intermarriage. One cause may be the Jewish singles scene here. Many singles interviewed feel it is difficult for them to meet other Jewish singles, and that sometimes they go out with a non-Jew, just to go out.

One vehicle for meeting people is "Our Gang."

Federation meeting. "Our Gang" does reach a segment of the Jewish singles here, but not all parts. Many singles interviewed expressed a desire for other programs, although they themselves found it difficult to describe exactly what it was they wanted.

Mr. Solomon believes that single people are old enough to speak up when they want something. "If they want a certain activity, it is their responsibility to say something," he said. "We will plan with them but not for them."

Conrad Roller, a Federation staff assistant, s4es single groups as an interesting phenomenon. "The nature of these groups is to die out," he said, "becah§ejiic\r purpose is to have people meet other people. Once that happens, the leadership falls apart and the continuity is lost. Groups lose their momentum and die after six months to one year."

Singles, intermarried couples, single-parent families. The increase in their numbers during the 80s will change Omaha's landscape. One challenge of the 80s will be to find solutions to these problems.

With the synagogues and the Jewish Federation working together, it should be much easier to diagnose the problems and seek out the answers.

Temple confident of future Temple Israel is Omaha's oldest congregation.

Founded in 1871, Temple has consistently tried to keep up with the times. As Ted Seldin, Temple president, said in a previously published interview "the philosophy of Reform Judaism stresses the search for innovative ways to kee^ Judaism alive and well. We believe that the values and traditions of Judaism should be conveyed to our people in the most realistic and relevant terms of contemporary society."

As Temple enters the decade of the 80s, the . congregation is once again preparing itself tomeet the challenges of a new decade. A long range planning committee to deal with the future of the congregation has been established.

"The purpose is to look at what we have now and the directions the congregation should move in order to maintain stability," Seldin said. "We sometimes get so involved with the day to day

The basic philosophy of Reform Judaism holds that changes can and do occur within the framework of Jewish tradition. We are willing to look at change."

Temple Rabbi Sidney Brooks feels Temple Israel is in good shape to enter the 80s. "We have a flexible congregation. I think we are a strong

synagogue with a stable staff and strong board of directors. There are no internal ideological battles here. We must be doing something right, because we're growing," Brooks said.

Brooks feels the number one problem Temple will face in the 80s is inflation. "I can think of many things I'd like our temple to do in the future, and we are not going to be able to afford them all at once.

So We will have to-do the best we can with what we've got. I'm sure we will," he said.

A synagogue's role is primarily that of a religious organization, according to Brooks. "The, raison d'etre here is to bring the wisdom of Judaism into our congregants' consciousness and influence their Jewishness," he said. "Both young and old must be reached.

- *i don't like pediatric Judaism," Brooks said.

"Sure, we have a big push for our children, but we try to help our adults also! You have to educate children for the future, but you have to educate adults to set an example for the children."

Brooks does not believe that synagogue attendance is a barometer of synagogue strength.

"The point is not how many come to services, but what those who came got," he said. "People go to services for two reasons: social and to say yarhzeit.

People don't go to the synagogue for two reasons: • bad weather and good weather."

Seldin agrees with Brooks about synagogue attendance. "Whether there is a large or small number present at Temple at any event or service," he said, "we are striving for quality both spiritually and intellectually for those who are there."

"Sermons at services, I fear are becoming a disappearing art form," Brooks said. "There are many ways to reach a congregant/ and the limitations are those of time and creativity by a rabbi. The important things is for a rabbi to meet

with his congregants, hopefully on a one-to-one basis."

"The synagogue today is not.the magnet it used to be," Brooks said. Communities don't cluster around the synagogue. We are no longer living in a shtetl. The spreading out of the Jewish community has made the demands on rabbis in this era absolutely tremendous," he said. .

"A synagogue's role used to be one of religion, education and social. Today it is only religious,1' Brooks said. "Two developments took people away from the synagogue: women went back to work, and parents went back to college. These are both positive actions, and I wouldn't want someone to give these up."

Brooks sees a more viable Jewish community in the future, but there will be stumbling blocks.

"Intermarriage, more single-parent families, an older community. These challenges will all have to be met, not only by Temple Israel, but by the community itself.

"I think we must open our institutions to the entire Jewish community. We need everyone's strength to take over for the Six Million who were killed during the Holocaust. 'I'm not goingtoclose my door to anyone. It's up to ustopreserve the Jewishness of the Jews here. In this way, our community will survive."—D.D.

New family in town feels Omaha's warmness Moving to a new town is usually a difficult task, especially when children are involved. But for the Gerald Yutkin family, moving from Appleton, Wisconsin, to Omaha was easy. Gerald, 36, his wife Ann, 34, and their two children Michael, seven, and Joshua, three, have lived in Omaha almost nine months, and they are very much a part of the community.

The family is originally from Chicago. They moved here from Wisconsin when Gerry was promoted to director of American Heritage Cablevision in Council Bluffs. Since

moving here he has been promoted again, this time to regional manager of the central region of American Television and Communications. He commutes from their home in Harvey Oaks to Council Bluffs.

Gerry has an extensive background in television. Over the past 10 years he has served as a public television director for the state of Illinois, a director of broadcasting for the Chicago Board of Rabbis and worked in cable television.

While working for the Chicago Rabbis he produced 90 minutes of programming for the local TV stations every week.

While Omaha's Jewish population cannot compare to Chicago, it is larger than Appleton's. "There was a small Jewish community there, only 125 families," Ann said. "I am happy to see more families and three synagogues in Omaha. We are members of Temple Israel, and we are glad there is a Reform congregation here."

Ann believes that having young children made it easier for her and The Yutkins have found Omaha to be Gerry to meet people. "Last Summer' Michael went to JCC Summer Camp and a friendly town. Our families are opportunities to become integrated into all out of town, so it was important to us a new community. "In a city like Omaha," he said, "it's easier to become integrated than in a big city such as Chicago. That is a major advantage to a town this size."

The Yutkins transferred Michael from the Harvey Oaks Elementary School to the Jewish Day School after he spent only one semester in the public school. "It was more because of the Montessori method being used at the Day School than for the Jewish aspect," Ann said. "In other towns we sent him to Montessori schools and we like the approach." Their youngest son Joshua attends the Montessori school on Pacific Street.

Michael, however, finds the Jewish part of the school more attractive than the secular subjects. In fact, his favorite class Is Hebrew and he is reteaching his parents the Alef-Bet. The decision to send Michael to a day school surprised Gerry. "I come from a liberal-reform background," he said. "I

never felt a strong commitment to parochial education. Even so, we've found that aspect to be a positive part of Michael's education here. It is likely that in Chicago we would not have sent him to a parochial school."

"I want our ' children to learntoMovetheir religion and its traditions, and to gain a true \ understanding and acceptance of Judaism. Living in a secular age As we enter a new decade, certain problems remain with the Jewish immunity. Beth Israel Rabbi Isaac Vadof f believes a major problem for his :ongregation and the entire Jewfsh ( :ommunity is "that we live in a secular *-• age."

"The synagogue and what it •epresents rates very low in peoples' ives. But I also think this is true of religion in general, both synagogues and :hurches," Nadoff said.

A reflection of this low rating can be seen in synagogue attendance. Nadoff, mwever, does not believe attendance at iabbath services is a true barometer of .ynagogue strength.' 'Rather, the standards and'goals the synagogue itands for should be the indicator,'' he •aid. "The real test of strength is what's ping to happen the next Shabbat.

"We can always fill Beth Israel on fom Kippur or on a Sabbath morning /hen there is a Bar Mitzvah. But what ibout the next Sabbath?

"For the average Jewish person ere, there is" no authentic expression of udaism. Whatever Jewish practices re carried out are done by rote, but not y commitment or conviction," Nadoff aid. "I'm sure these people are proud to e Jewish, but I'm talking ommitinent."

Nadoff believes an example of this commitment is the Sabbath. Even though Judaism says one should remember and observe the Sabbath, many people do not even consider not working on the Sabbath, according to the rabbi.

Israel's congregants do not attend Sabbath services. Though he cannot speak definitively on attendance figures at the other synagogues, Nadoff believes 90 percent is an accurate number for both Beth El and Temple Israel also.

"We are all victims of secularization," he said.

Dr. Paul Shyken, Beth Israel president, feels synagogue attendance will improve in the future. "We've been getting new young members, more than in the past, and I see these people. attending services more often," Shyken said.

Shyken believes Beth Israel is a strong synagogue and part of its strength comes from the rabbi. "Rabbi Nadoff is a very dynamic person. We are more of a traditional synagogue than an Orthodox one. I don't know if this is as attractive as a Conservative or Reform synagogue, but I do know having Rabbi Nadoff is a great asset for Beth Israel," he said. r Nadoff says it's not easy to judge a rabbi.

"The rabbinate is an extremely difficult profession. You never or rarely see results. You don't know if you're succeeding or not," he said. "A doctor sees-fesults. The patient dies, the patient lives. There is a result. A lawyer sees

results. He represents a client. He wins , or he loses, but he sees results. Not so with a rabbi.

"The rabbi plants seeds, and it takes a long time for them to bear fruit. We plant seeds in various ways, one is through the education of our youngsters," Nadoff said.

In 1979, the August Beth Israel Bulletin announced the names of 11 students who were continuing their Jewish education outside of Omaha.

Some went to a parochial high school, some to Israel to study, and others to college in New York. As the rabbi reviewed the names of these students, he

"Why did they go," he asked. "I think this could be attributed to the seeds we planted. These kind of seeds are evident.

A lifelong dream

Dick Fellman for Congress . For the last 20 years, Dick Fellman has been an active participant in local politics. He served in the Nebraska Legislature; and is currently chairman of the Douglas County Board of Commissioners. Dick is running for the Democratic nomination for Congress from the Second District. If successful in the May primary and the November general election, Dick Fellman will be going off to Washington, D.C. in the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. ^ It is a sense of history instilled in him by his late mother, Frances, that has motivated Dick to" participate in government. "When I was a child, my mother would read to me about Madison, Jefferson and Lincoln. I thought about how they were real people who served in government. I started thinking about going to Congress. Lincoln first went to Congress when he was a 40-year-old lawyer," said the 44-year-old Omaha lawyer.

If he iselected to Congress, Dick will be giving up a comfortable law practice, a much easier lifestyle and friends and family in the city where he has lived all of his life. But he thinks living in Washington, D.C. would be a challenge and an exciting time for his wife, Bev, and their four children.

"I have been practicing law for 20 years. I feel comfortable at it, enjoy what I am doing and could -continue to practice jor another 20 years-Being-in— Congress would be a totally new and different experience," Dick said.

"The idea of moving is a mixed blessing. On the one hand Washington is an exciting city. The front page of the local newspaper is the front page of the world. Living in Washington would be a broadening experience. We do have family and friends in the • area. Bev's brother lives in the Maryland suburbs, and we have visited there several times with the children.

"On the other hand we would be leaving Omaha where we have lived all of our lives, where our children were born and where the majority of our family lives."

Dick thought that Rep. John Cavanaugh would remain in Congress for years, so he had started

relationship with his family despite the pressures of organizing for his re-election to the County Board. a campaign.

Meet the Brodkey boys...

100 years in business -Shermand FttttfBrodkey are the third generation of their family to run Brodkey Jewelry.

One of Omaha's oldest retail establishments is having an anniversary. 1980 marks the 100th year that Brodkey Jewelry Company has been in business. Today the business is under the direction of Ron and Sherman Brodkey, grandsons of the founder, and the third generation to run Brodkey Jewelry.

The history of Brodkey Jewelry almost ended in 1917 when founder. Morris Brodkey, died leaving a wife with six young children.

"Grandmother ran the store and after school the boys would come down to help. One by one as the boys graduated from high school they came into the business," Ron Brodkey explained.

During the 1920's the stdjke was located at 13th and Douglas. In the late 1930s the store moved to 1419 Douglas where it remained until the building was torn down in January 1975 to make way for the new library. A second store was opened in 1933 during the depths of the Depression. Edward's, on the corner of 16th and Harney, was named after the oldest brother who managed the store.

The roots of Brodkey Jewelry can be found in the pawn shop. The first store was a combination pawn shop and jewlery store that also sold musical instruments. During the 1930s the pawn shop was left behind and the business evolved into a jewelry store that sold bowling balls, tool sets, appliances and had a complete optical department with two optometrists.

"The brothers always knew how to generate traffic. People came in to have their eyes examined and walked by the counters. When we made the transition from the pawn shop to the jewelry business with credit installments some of the periphery items came along," Ron said.

Despite the bad financial times of the Depression the business managed to survive. "The business had a low overhead with the immediate family in charge. And even in the bad times you

have active buying and selling of gold, silver, antiques and estate items," Ron explained.

At Brodkey Jewlery the three brothers always got along. Dave, Edward and Fred each had their own area of responsibility. They wouldn't make a move concerning the company until all three brothers agreed. "It was business decision by unanimity," said Sherman. The brothers were responsible for the advertising slogan, "Meet the Brodkey Boys. . . Wear Diamonds", which Is still used today. The slogan was first used on radio in the 1920's during direct broadcasts from the store.

In 1958, David's son, Ron, became the first member of the third generation to join the company. He was followed in 1966 by Edward's son, Sherman. Edward, David and Fred never asked anyone to do a job they wouldn't do on a regular basis. They thought they should do a job as well as or better than the employees. And they demanded the same performance from Ron and Sherman.

"I joined the business after college graduation and spent three years in the stockroom behind a mop," Ron said. "I rarely saw the light of day while I drilled bowling balls and worked in shipping and receiving."

Ron's cousin, Sherman, tells the same story.

"Like Ron I grew up in the business. If you could see over the counter you were at the store. When I graduated from college I spent six months forgetting my entire college education so I could learn the busi - Everybody came up the hard way."

Ron and S -an, now vice-presidents, have moved up the management ladder and each has his own area of responsibility. Ron buys giftware, a job he inherited from his father, and oversees building, operating and staff ing of the stores. Sherman handles the buying and merchandising of jewelry, gold, diamonds, watches and other related items.

person behind the annual "Yekdorb" sale.

One of the reasons for Brodkey Jewelry's success is the stability of the company. First the brothers and now Ron and Sherman stay close to what they know. "Our fathers told us that absentee management is what gets a company into'trouble.

We have always worked very hard to stay on top of the business and not go off into directions we don't know anything about," Ron said.'' And the business has been very good for three generations. It has clothed, schooled, housed and fed a lot of families."

Another important Jactor is the longevity of employees. There is virtually no turnover In the executive staff and 20 year employees are rather common. "It's very important to have good salespeople. Our organization was not just by management," Sherman said, "We couldn't go out and buy the experience pool even at the Harvard " Business School."

Edward Brodkey, the last surviving brother, is chairman and president of Brodkey Jewlery. He goes to the downtown store everyday to keep an eye on the business. Sarah Dansky.his sister, who has worked in the company for years, also continues to work when she Is in town. Ron said that the other employes have to hurry to beat his Aunt Sarah to the customers.

The Brodkey Jewelry Co. of 1980 is vastly different from the company started In 1880. The bowling balls and appliances have been phased out.

The company has nine stores located in Omaha, Council Bluffs, Lincoln and other outstate Nebraska cities. Still, today Sherman and Ron face uncertain economic situations lust as their fathers did. But they see only positives for Brodkey Jewelry Co. . ^ "There will always be a diamond and gold market to the best of my judgement," Sherman said. (Continued from Page 28) years. People are not in the market for diamonds every day. The man who had $1,000 five years ago to buy an engagement ring still has that $1,000. Of course, it usually buys less. It is very painful for us to remember what a $1,000 bought five, 10 or 15 years ago.

"A young man buying a diamond ring is making an emotional^purchase. Every girl dreams of' having a diamond ring. People get married all the time and some sort of ring is necessary. I don't see any drastic changes."

The flagship store is located in downtown Omaha at 16th and Harney, the site of the old Edward's store. The Brodkeys plan to stay in that location. "We have seen the worst of the bad times in downto'wn. The last two to three years have seen a healthy increase in the volume in our downtown store," said Ron: "I see a healthy position for downtown especially with the energy situation," added Sherman. "I don't believe downtown is dead or dying."

For the future Sherman and Ron see retailing as more challenging in the 80s. The consumers are demanding the ultimate value for the dollars and the Brodkeys are prepared to give the consumers what they want. _ • "" Will there always be a Brodkey at the helm of Brodkey Jewelry Co.? The "awful tunnel" on 84th street drove Mike Albert into politics.

Does the tunnel lead to Washington?

For Mike Albert, the awful tunnel on 84th street was the impetus that put him in politics. In 1974, Michael Albert Inc., a food brokerage company, moved to new offices at 82nd and J streets. Each morning on the way to the office and . each evening on his return trip home, Mike had to fight the traffic congestion at the tunnel.

"I got mad about the tunnel, and went down and filed for the County Board of Commissioners without telling my family. The government had not solved a simple problem like the tunnel issue which had been going on for 10 years. I wanted to do something about it," Mike said. ' "It was said that an unknown couldn't win. It was a difficult race. In the primary I came in last of the three Republican nominees. A study after the primary showed I had 6 percent name recognition. I did everything in the general election to get name recognition and get the issues across. I campaigned door to door, put up yard signs, went on television." " The effort paid off and Mike Albert was elected a Douglas County Commissioner. He was voted Chairman of the Board by the other commissioners and began to make waves. According to Mike as a result of one of his votes work began on the replacement of the 84th street tunnel. Under his direction the board eliminated its $7M> million debt, reduced the debt at the County Hospital by $5 million and abolished the County slush fund.

Three years after winning his first election, Mike turned his eyes toward city government. He thought Omaha had problems that weren't being solved, and he decided to run for Mayor to help correct some of those problems. This

time he did not beat the odds and was knocked out of the election in the primary.

In 1978, Mike ran for re-election for the County Board and was the only Republican, elected. Last fall he decided to run for Congress from fhe 2nd District. Again the reason for his involvement is that he thinks that Congress is not taking care of the problems facing America, and he wants to go to Washington D.C. to help correct those problems.

"Congress has been unable to solve the major fundamental problems facing the nation such as energy, inflation and national security. Congress has slowly made it difficult for families to make ends meet while at the same time it has been too busy to worry about the direction of the country, "Mike said.

"This can go on only so long before the people will revolt and demand a change in direction. I am confident that through the voting process people will make their views known rather than through the people in the street process.

"What we need in Congress is amore. business-like approach in running the government. « "I think today we need businessmen who know how to look at a budget. We need to identify the waste, the abuse and the fraud that exists. Business people have a very keen eye to zero in on where those factors are and squeeze them out of the budget."

Looking ahead Mike sees his primary race, which he expects to win, and the general election campaign as a tough fight. But he enjoys the pressure and excitement of the campaign trail. He is putting in 18 hour days with his commitment to the County Board, the overseeing of his business and the campaign. But he acknowledges that he

As often as possible Mike and his wife, Mary, go out in the District door to door and introduce themselves to the voters. Mike believes that meeting people personally is an important part of a campaign. ' 'People don't know me except through the media. Many times that exposure gives a different impression of what people are really like. Besides, Mary and I like meeting people and talking to them," Mike said. What Mike is hearing from people is that the major concern today is national security followed by a tremendous concern about inflation.

Mike calls himself a Republican without modifying labels. He doesn't like political labels, and deals with each issue on an individual basis. "My record indicates that I am very tight with the tax dollar and very demanding that budgets be balanced. But I am also concerned about the needs of those less fortunate. Sometimes it's a tough juggling act to balance the dollars available with the needs of the people."

Mike has gone on record that he would serve only two terms on the County Board and recently said that Congressmen should serve only six terms. He thinks that after years in one political body a person gets out of touch with the people. He believes that there is always room for new faces and ideas.

If Mike goes to Washington he would like to lead the fight to balance the budget, to produce a comprehensive energy plan and to improve national security. "If I can get those three things done I would feel a great sense of accomplishment. Actually, if I can get one of those things completed I would be satisfied."

When questioned about the unspoken policy that says freshmen congressmen watch, listen and learn during their first term, Mike said he is not going to sit around "waiting for someone to throw me a crumb. I have a record and a history of being in the right place at the right time."

If elected, Mike and Mary would go off to Washington with mixed emotions.

Mike is anxious to be a congressman and get the job done, but he likes living in Omaha and really doesn't want to leave.

He would come back to the District as often as possible.

Has the time and effort put into government been worth it for Mike Albert? The unqualified answer Is yes.

"Today, Douglas County is not in bankruptcy, the senior citizens and mentally retarded are better served, and the County is run more efficiently. I played a part in those changes.

"On a personal level I have become a better person. I have come to respect other people's views and learned to appreciate my family better. I would spend a lot of time helping people like senior citizens who had serious problems, and I would forget to look after someone in my own family. A couple of years ago X realized that was wrong, and changed my way of thinking."'

For the future, Mike is confident that the United States will continue to meet its problems head on. "I believe in the good that exists in this country," he said.

"If we get too far from where we began or where we ought to be, I think the people will put a halt to It and get us back on the right track through the election process. I think the government needs people like myself who can help reverse the current trends in the country.—E.G.

Working in a spirit of cooperation Omaha has four principal Jewish institutions.

The three synagogues: Beth El, Beth Israel and Temple Israel and the Jewish Federation. All of these institutions play a major role in shaping our Jewish community, and they will continue to be important as we enter the 1980s.

In interviews with the synagogue rabbis and presidents, and Federation officials and board members, a variety of opinions surfaces. While everyone agrees that the synagogues and the Federation serve a common goal,-overtones suggesting an adversary relationship exist. Not surprisingly, there is a difference of thinking among these people on what the relationship is and what it should be.

The synagogue's role in the community is clearly defined by Beth El Rabbi Kenneth Bromberg: "We are primarily a religious institution. We provide for the climactic moments in life—birth, barmitzvah, marriage and death."

As written in its constitution, the role of the Federation is more general: (1) to engage in and carry on social, benevolent, philanthropic and educational activities: (2) to centralize fundraising activities for philanthropic, social and educational purposes to avoid duplication of effort in this connection: (3) to establish and maintain in Omaha a Jewish Community Center building for ' the"convenience",' housing and accommodation of Omaha Jewish charitable, philanthropic and educational activities; (4) to establish and maintain in Omaha a Jewish Home for the Aged.

Although the Federation's Constitution lists several objectives, it is generally perceived by the synagogue officials interviewed to be a fundraising institution.

"A federation is a federated form of fundraising," Rabbi Bromberg said. Temple Rabbi Sidney Brooks commented: "The Federation and the synagogues "must each be understood for what they are. I would like to see the Federation in fundraising and management where they do so well."

As director of planning and budgeting for the Federation, Allan Greene views the Federation's role this way: "To bring people with different • backgrounds together to work for a common goal.

Synagogues can't do this," he said.

Working toward a common goal. There are several areas in which these four institutions can work together; certain areas are automatic, according to Beth Israel Rabbi Isaac Nadoff.

"Israel is a concern to both of us," he said. "When emergencies arise and they want to come here (Beth Israel) and raise money, we always cooperate."

Another area in which cooperation exists is the

education of our youth. "One of the biggest expenses for a synagogue today is education," Mr. Greene said. "Synagogues aroin trouble. There are fewer kids to teach and less money to pay expenses.

So the Jewish Federation here provides money for the synagogues to pay their teachers. I think this is a unique situation. I don't think you'll find one federation in the country where financial support is given to the synagogues."

The Federation pays 60 percent of each contact hour the teachers are with their students. Louis Solomon, executive director of the Jewish Federation, thinks it is unwise to have three synagogue schools, especially in light of demographic studies which indicate a declining population. "We are not spending our dollars wisely," he said. "I would like to see a community school for pur youth."

Another Federation official, Alan Goodman, the controller, believes the education offered our youth must be improved, "the first step was the hiring of Harris Goldstein and Marsha Tatz for the Day School. If we are going to keep our kids here we have to offer them a good education at the lowest possible community cost."

There are other areas in which the synagogues and the Federation could work together. Dr. Paul Shyken, president of Beth Israel, said four specific areas were discussed at a meeting last fall between then Federation President Mrs. Mary Fellman and representatives of the three synagogues. These areas included group purchasing of supplies, adult education, security for the buildings against vandalism, and financing students who want to go on the Israel pilgrimage.

Today students who wish to go to Israelop j accepted summer programs may qualirylfor scholarships from both the Federation and their synagogue.

While areas of cooperation exist and differences remain, Beth El President Donald Nogg believes "we aje all the same people. I am a member of a synagogue and a member of the Federation. The Federation can't exist without the people who make up the synagogues," he said.

Not all members of the Federation, however, are members of synagogues, "the JCC is not a religious institution," Mr. Greene said. "But in many communities the only way a non-synagogue affiliated Jew can show his Jewishness is by joining the JCC. We need the strength of these people also."

According to Mr. Solomon, the Federation is willing to give the synagogues the names of these JCC members who do not belong to a synagogue. ."We try to help the synagogue recruit these people by giving them the names," he said, "but I wish they would provide us with people to do the work.''

Mrs. Fellman had these observations on synagogue-federation relations: ."For the past few years we have, through the Federation, made a concentrated effort to activate a Federation-Synagogue Relations committee for the mutual benefit of the four major institutions in our Jewish community. I think we are still only at the beginning and probably for a number of reasons. The leadership of these organizations are busy people, each concerned about their own problems and their own needs and with little time for additional meetings.

"There are areas though where we could benefit and complement each other and hopefully there will be more of that inter-relationship in the years ahead. The smaller number of Jewish children and the greater number of older adults, the need for wise spending of community dollars which includes synagogue dollars, the utilization of the expertise of Fjederation personnel by synagogue boards—there are many areas where we could work together for a stronger and more viable Jewish community. I hope that day will come soon."

Conrad Koller, a Federation staff assistant," believes the period of competition between the synagogue and the Federation is over. "There is an interdependence between them now," he said. "In a number of areas common work can be done.

Synagogues and the Federation can work together on almost anything. Some people feel there are lines of demarcation, but the JCC can't be non-' religious a'nd (he synagogues can't be non-secular.

Instead of fighting, we should be working together to enhance all phases of programming.

Older Adult Programs Enjoying the pleasures of social conf act

By Bert Lewis The purpose of the Older Adult Program reads, in an abbreviated form, as follows: To increase communication and involvement, to encourage and foster the interest of seniors, to create new and interesting programs and to utilize the expertise of key Bureau Board members.

But what exactly IS the OTder Adult Program? To arrive at a simple definition is not easy, because essentially the Older Adult Program is people. People who are in charge of a monumental effort to act as a magnet for as many members of our Jewish Community over 60 as possible, and the people who respond to that effort. WHY? To interest these mostly retired citizens In getting together, for the pleasures of social contact and the fringe benefits of that contact. Let me give you an example: Every Monday, rain or shine, winter and summer, a number of these folks

arrive at the JCC for the regular meeting of the Mixed Group. There are married couples, single men, single women, friends who arrive together, some who are dropped off by a son or daughter. These people will spend some time visiting with each other, exchanging news and generally socializing. At noon a hot lunch will be served to them for a very nominal cost; and it should be noted that in some cases, this lunch will be the substantial meal of the day.'

of mostly retired men who call themselves "The Old Timers". WHO are they? They are our fathers and grandfathers-andjuncles and brothers The meal is followed by a program — and husbands. The ones who now have more freetime than they used to have a speaker perhaps, or an entertainer of some kind. Something of interest to when they were so busy earning a living.

WHAT do they do? They elect officers, finish that part of the day. The lounge is pay dues, and for the most part function open to anyone who wants to stay and play cards or read, or talk. Surely a day as any fraternal organization might. If we look in at a typical meeting, we see like this is better than one spent alone at that the early arrivals have a discussion home, with the television often the only group on most any subject imaginable, company. be it religion, sports or politics.

Another example: Let's go to alternate Tuesdays when the Older Later comes lunch (again for a small Adult Program refers to a unique group cost), and the warm presentation of any

and a program or some kind, usually followed by cards for some or just general visiting. A good way to spend a day — in the company of others whose Interests are so like one's own, no?

What does Older Adult Program mean on Thursdays? Beth El Walk-In, Drop-In.. .come! Something to suit everyone's fancy. And of course, lunch.

Hot, good, maybe even (as with all OAP meals) extra good, because any meal eaten in the company of friends is more enjoyable than one taken in solitude.

Here's one of the highlights of the program. One Friday each month Beth

Israel provides the facilities to these adults for a pre-Shabbat lunch and an entertaining speaker or program of some kind. This is always an especially nice gathering, perhaps because most of those who participate in this particular function are accustomed to welcoming Shabbat as the important day of the week.

Now each of these aforementioned activities represent the structured part of OAP. Not mentioned yet are the notregularly-scheduled extras, such as trips.

A trip might be as modest as a week-

end in Kansas City, or as exciting as a few days in Las Vegas. One group went to the Catskllls recently. Not to be forgotten are Israeli tours, trips to Hawaii. In fact, November 1980 is already marked for the next trip to Israel.

Other extras — a Yiddish film festival, or special arrangements with a local dinner theater, for those who want to see a delightful play which happened to star two of Omaha's own Jewish women. Or special consideration of reduced rates for OAP members who attend a movie theater for a film of particular interest. These are but a few of the "extras". This is the Older Adult Program.

People — we said at the very beginning, the program is people. Now let's cite two of them by name. The chairperson of the Older Adult Committee, a very special lady, is Toby Kagan. Toby has given this chore her tireless, enthusiastic energy, and is always on the look-out for fresh ideas or new and different programs with which to interest her people. Whether it means working out the logistics for events, or concerning herself with the Introduction of a new workshop, or helping to serve lunch, Toby maintains a personal standard of excellence that deserves nothing less than a standing ovation. The OAP is lucky to have her.

The second name to be mentioned is, of course, Mollie Delman. Her title? I'm not really sure she haspnly one, because Mollie is all things to all (of her) people.

She's the tour director, she's the one who calls to see how the arthritis is today, she's the one who arranges for a ride for somebody who needs one. She puts out the calendar and the flyers to inform her

people about coining events. She's the one who DOES. And best of allTwhatever she does, is done with love.

Special mention should also go to the Volunteers; the ones who come to all of these programs as helpers. They serve food, they cook on occasion. They teach and work with various craft projects.

They pick up and deliver in the family car. They help In a multitude of ways too numerous to list here, but without them these programs would be hard put to function smoothly.

Now we come to the forces which power this Older Adult Program. Of course we begin with basics — without the support of the Bureau for the Aging, and the over-all parent agency, the

Jewish Federation, there would be little to talk about.

This then, is the Older Adult Program. In a few words, it's people coming together, sharing simchas, gossip, problems. Keeping in touch with each other, helping each other. Hearing a speaker tell of some special service or help never heard of before, which could be a blessing. Contact — human contact.

Feeling again some of the old independence. Feelfng involved with the rest of the community. Feeling alive, and part of the world in 1980.

Exercising their new freedom

By Susie Tretlak During the Passover ritual, In the Pesach Haggadah, we read: "In every generation they rise against us, and in every generation the Holy One, Blessed be He, delivers us,out of their hands.'' This refers not only to Moses smiting the cruel Egyptian task-master of his people, but even the Hitlers and Stalins of the world over. Moses fled into the desert to lead his people. And from this act and flight came the exodus and the liberation. We speak of Moses as the external symbol of our own recurring enslavement and liberation.

During Passover we deal not only w,ith a physical enslavement, but we are concerned with a " feel ing: freedom. The freedom to be a Jew. We make a covenant with G-d "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." Only one whose spirit is free can make this commitment with G-d. Our Jewish freedom rests upon the words "Hear 0 Israel the L-rd Our G-d, the L-rd is One." Each of us as Jews must realize this that separates us from others makes us tree, gives essential meaning to our lives.

Peter Ostromogilsky grew up as a Russian Jew. He was as content as a Jew could be in a land where one was punished for attending a synagogue. Because of his informal Jewish worship, Peter is no less a Jew. For we will see that he truly embodies those qualities that make one a proud Jew.

"In every generation they rise up against us.. ." ' In the 1950's something happened that began to haunt Peter into wanting the freedom of the world beyond. Poland had in general sided with the Jews, until there came a letter throughout Russia from those in Poland that was very antiSemetic. Peter was shocked at the false accusations he was reading. Perhaps in that one instant, his awareness of what it meant to be a Jew was far greater than most of us will ever experience. Such lies they were saying about his people. Yes, his people! And Moses said to Pharoah, "Let my people go! "and Peter said, "Let my people go—let my family go so they may serve you, G-d. Where we can stand up publicly and proudly procl aim our one G-d.''

It was time for the Ostromogilskys to leave their native Russia. After the thought of a better life has firmly been Implanted within one's own mind, the plan is made as to what steps should be taken. One begins to gather money from all sources, for it is not inexpensive to start life over.

In Russia, as everywhere, the Jewish people had an instant common bond.

No other people has that quality and desire as we do to always help his fellow Jew. There's a spontaneous support and closeness that need not be explained. And in Russia the Jews would hold meetings as to the "trlcksof the trade.'Mn gelling out of Russia. One must serve papers to the authorities to be granted freedom. The wording and timing of this presentation are vital. A rejection can make the rest of one's living in Russia a life of hell. Peter refers to these meetings as his "second education".

That perfect moment soon came. Peter experienced a miracle at his "burningbush." Nixon was coming to the Soviet Union. This information was heard through a worldwide radio station, "The Voice of America." Certainly the Russian government didn't want to make waves at this time so they would be in a more agreeable frame of mind. So the papers were served.

Shura, Peter's wife, was totally supportive of the decision to go. However, Shura's mother was very afraid for them. How would it be In America? There also

existed the possibility of going to Israel. But being raised in Russia meant that one's work was the most important part of him. And in Israel it was known that jobs were hard to find. Peter couldnUJive with that possibility. So the money was gathered, the belongings packed, the "red tape" completed and the Ostromogilskys began their exodus.- I Lincoln, Nebraska was to be their destination before coming to Omaha. One can only imagine the thoughts running through their minds en route to a new life.

Lincoln was chosen because there was a relative of Peter's there who was a very special person. Peter's uncle was the epitome of godliness—full of kindness, trying never to hurt another's feelings, a gentle man, certainly hot wealthy, but rich in compassion. Perhaps the prophet Micah phrases in totality the Jewish faith: "What doth the L-rd require of thee? Only to act justly, to love mercy and to (Continued on Page 39)

Peter and Shura Astor recently became citizens of the United States.

(Continued from Page 38) walk humbly with they G-d." Such a man was Peter's uncle and through Peter's closeness with him, he, too, became such a man.

In Lincoln, Peter worked for the Department of Roads for four years. In Russia he had designed harbors and ports. Presently, here in Omaha, Peter designs bridges. Shura did marketing research in Russia and is now research manager at the Omaha National Bank. Valery, their 12 year old son, speaks perfect English. Michael, another son, is studying biophysics at Columbia University.

Both sons represent dreams come true. The love of learning dominates our faith. This Is a basic principle of the Talmud. Peter also wanted to comply with this aspect of his Jewishness. Their children's education was a major factor for - coming to America. Peter's views on the prejudice in Russia against Jewish education Is strong. Peter says that the universities contained more than 50 percent Jews, but it is constantly dwindling.

After the Revolution, the Jews settled In big cities and went to all the universities. The best working positions then went to the Jews. There then evolved a rivalry among the Ukranians and Jews according to the way Peter feels. The government began to make it tougher for Jews to get into the universities. One of Peter's friends had an extremely bright child. From the eighth grade on, the boy had special tutors in order to learn all that he could. The child scored three times higher on the entrance exams than was required, but he was still not allowed to enter. Peter wanted desperately to have his sons study and learn as they chose.

Last month came the "freedom finale". Mr. and Mrs. Ostromogilsky became citizens of the United States of America, and Mr. and Mrs. Astor. They said the exams were easy, but they had some trouble with questions concerning the Constitution and the organization of the Supreme Court. Their friends, Gary Hill and Cecil Hill, served as their witnesses. After one passes the test, a month long investigation follows before citizenship is actually granted.

Mr. and Mrs. Astor finally have a country.

So Mr. and Mrs. Astor finally have a country. They would be the first to say "Thank G-d". They had wanted so desperately to belong and to get away from the "Russian prison". The Astors felt like they were still living out of a suitcase. Now they are truly Americans and appreciate everything this "land of opportunities'' has to offer.

They do think of their fellow workers and friends left behind in Russia. They don't correspond with the Russians for fear of causing them any trouble. Peter's mother, now deceased, occupies many of his thoughts. Peter knows she would have been proud of the way his family is living their lives.

Peter is still constantly asked about his synagogue affiliation. He shyly and almost apologetically says, "It will come In time". But Peter need not be questioned on his Jewishness. We have seen here a man who bears all the qualities a good Jew should possess. In his own private moments he calls upon G-d and at his Seder table he will know whyy this night is different. ";!:•••

One story out of many The Dr. Philip Sher Home (or the Aged is full of stories, 69 to be exact. Every person who lives there has a rich background. One such person is Eva Schwartz, an intelligent, articulate, concerned Jew. When Eva decided to enter a retirement home, she had littie difficulty in choosing Dr. Sher. "1 am an observant Jewess," Eva said, "and I appreciate Shabbat and holiday services. They are very meaningful to me, and 1 wanted to be somewhere where I could attend religious services. They give me spiritual nourishment which I need, and I could not have elsewhere."

Eva also chose this home because of its founder.

"I knew Dr. Sher, "she said, "he used to visit my grandparents. He was a wonderful man. Our family had great respect forhim."

Eva feels comfortable at the Home. She believ.es that Jews, no matter what their belief, like to live with Jews. "It gives everyone a sense of belonging, a sense of oneness," she said.

Another source of satisfaction for Eva is the staff at the Home. She described them as professional, friendly and dedicated."Since I don't have any family in Omaha, these people act as my family here. I love them, "Eva said. "Everyone shares, cares and has deep sympathy for one another. A great bond is formed among the residents and the staff."

Eva's enthusiasm for the Home is matched by her willingness to help other people who live there.

She reads mail to people who have trouble seeing, she writes letters for those who can no longer write for themselves, and she edits a newsletter which is published three times a year in the Home. . And yet Eva says that what she does is nothing special. "I just love life and people. We are really one big family here. Everyone does what they can to help another person. I do my share," she said.

Ben Laub, executive director ofthe Home,

describes Eva only in superlatives. "A super lady," he said, "creative, bright, exciting, resourceful, a real dynamo. We are lucky she is here with us."

Eva worked 18 years for the Corps of Engineers before retiring. A framed letter of commendation from the Department of the Army hangs on one of her room walls at the Home. Below the letter is a black and white picture of her and former Prime Minister of Israel Yitzhak Rabin, when he gave a speech at the Home last year. Rabin's visit is a highlight of Eva's five years at the Home. "It was very exciting when he came here, he was by far the most popular person to speak here since I've arrived," she said.

While Rabin's visit was special, the regular visits by local volunteers to the Home are more important to Eva. "The programs these people present, the activities they plan, and just their presence is a great lift for many people at the Home, including me," she said. "The volunteers bring sunshine and life to the Home. We appreciate these visits."

Eva has no children to visit her. Other people in the Home do have children who could visit them, and this doesn't always happen, according to Eva. She wishes the opposite was true. "I think people should honor the Fifth Commandment to show love and respect for their parents. People sometimes - forget that they too will one day be like their parents. Those people who visit their parents have a good feeling in their heart, and these people will not feel guilty when it's too late, if you know what I mean," Eva said.

The Jewish community of Omaha has gone through many changes during Eva's life — some good and some bad. As we enter the decade of the Eighties, Eva is optimistic.

• "We have so many fine people, she said. "This

generation has so much to look forward to.

Medications for sick people are being discovered so people can live longer. People whose longevity increases keep active, they don't idle their time away, which is good. The quality of people's lives is also improving every day.

"I look forward to the future. If a new home for the aged is built near the Jewish Community Center, it will benefit everyone. Residents will be able to take advantage of the Center's excellent facilities. People who make trips to the Center can then come and visit people in the Home. The Jewish community can be brought close together. I really hope a new home is built." — D.D.

College in the 80s

A letter from Sarah Jane Ross Dear Mom and Dad, Jenny and Charlotte, My new life in New York is so exciting! There are so many new things happening, interesting people, unusual places to go — Barnard is certainly the place for me.

Some of my best experiences have revolved around the observance of the holidays. Sukkot was special — a friend took me down to the Lower East Side to buy lulav and etrog. It was fascinating seeing hundreds of lulavlm and etrogim all laid out in huge displays with religious men bargaining for the best deal they can get. Dressed in long black coats and black hats, the salesmen spoke Hebrew,

Yiddish, andLadino! In one shop it became late afternoon and the men glanced at their watches, realized it was time for mincha (afternoon prayers;, and started praying right in the. middle of the store. The women, meanwhile, were busy purchasing paper decorations for their Sukkot. The entire neighborhood had an expectant mood. One could almost feel the holiday approaching.

I spent Simchat Torah in a less traditional but equally exciting way. My roommate and 1 went to the Jewish Theological Seminary, about four blocks from school. The rooms were packed with students and the noise was deafening. Everyone was singing

and dancing In long, weaving lines, and at the head of the lines were the Torahs. There was nothing to do but Join in the celebrating, shouting, exuberant crowd. There was no mistaking the mood o( this holiday. It was a time of Joy, of singing and dancing, of celebrating with friends. I was told some students had travelled hundreds of miles to observe Simchat Torah at the Seminary and I could understand why.

There is a close, observant community at Columbia that keeps Shabbat, so there is a nice holiday every week. Friday afternoon my roommate and I clean up the room, go grocery shopping for the weekend, and get dressed for services. There are many places in the neighborhood to go for services, everywhere from a very liberal, egalitarian minyan to a strictly Orthodox service with women in a balcony separate from men.

Friday nights my friends and I usually go to services at Columbia and then stay for Seudot (literally, meal). There are Conservative and Orthodox services at Columbia, and then a dinner for everyone. It's a nice opportunity to have a Friday night meal with old friends and to meet new ones. Saturday is a special day, too. We generally put aside studying and go to synagogue, have leisurely lunch, and spend the afternoon visiting friends. This communal observance Is a marvelous— experience. Knowing that there is a large group of peers that believe and observe the way you do is a very comfortable feeling.

There are many benefits that come from the large Jewish community at Columbia. There is a convenient kosher meal plan, a number of organized religious groups, and a constantly growing number of social action projects initiated by students. It's educational and stimulating to live in such a concerned, active-atmosphere.

Mom and Dad, it's probaby hard to imagine what my life is like, and it's equally hard for me to describe the new feelings and experiences, and the wonderful, warm friends I've made. Just know that I'm very happy at Barnard.

Jewish groups for Jewish youth chapter offices.

This year the 17-year-old Westslde senior is a BBYO Cornbelt Region vicepresident. His duties now are mainly on a regional level.

While all of the groups mentioned have a Jewish tie, some do not emphasize the cultural and education aspect of their chapter as much as the social and athletic. The Omaha Jewish community has several organizations for youth of high school age. B'nai B'rith sponsors three AZA groups for boys and three BBG chapters for girls. Temple Israel sponsors a National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY) chapter, Beth Israel, a Synagogue Youth Organization (SYO) and Beth El a United Synagogue Youth (USY) group. There also are ' programs for youth who are unaffiliated with an organization, but still desire youth activities. Mark Greenberg, director of youth services for the Jewish Community Center, organizes these activities.

Keeping our young people active in Jewish youth groups, and encouraging unaffiliated youth to join an organization is another challenge of the 80s. Their participation in these organizations adds anotherdimension to their Jewishness and helps reinforce their Jewish ties.

Getting involved in a youth group can be a very positive experience for a youn^; person, Mike Herman has been active in Jewish youth groups all through high school, and he is glad he got involved. As a freshman Mike was in USY. In high school he joined AZA where he has held .various committee chairmanships and

Although Mike feels improvements can always be made in the programming offered, he is satisfied with what he received from AZA. Perhaps one reason why is Mike's background. "I always grew up being with Jewish kids and I knew that's what I wanted in high school. So activity in a youth group was natural," he said.

Helping other Jewish youth enjoy their high school groups as much as Mike did will be one challenge for our community in the 80s. Working together-,, the community can meet this challenge D.D.

Planning for the city and the community A visitor to the top floor of the Douglas County Civic Center gets a unique view of Omaha. Models and maps of projects that the City Planning Department has designed are everywhere.. After viewing these designs, the visitor can get some idea of Omaha's future.

Marty Shukert, 30, works in the City Planning Department. He is primarily concerned with community development and neighborhood rehabilitation. He has been working there since 1976. Talking with Marty one gets an idea of the Jewish community's future.

Marty belongs to Beth El Synagogue. Beth El has always been a home to him. He had his Bar Mitzvah there, he has sung in their choir and he reads Torah there on Shabbat. He also is chairman of the Building Committee. In this capacity, Marty is particularly concerned with Beth El's future as well as that of the Jewish community. Talking to him one gets a sense of Beth El's future and that of the Jewish community.

At a February Board Meeting the Beth El Trustees voted to sell all or part of the land they now hold as a "Beth El West Building Site." Marty agrees with the Trustees' action.

"The site Beth El bought is much larger than needed," Marty said. "We only need five acres. It is better to remodel the present synagogue's interior because even if a new synagogue is built out West the present synagogue will remain in its place for a substantial amount of time."

Marty sees a problem for Beth El in the area of demographics. "The community doesn't attract new people," he said. "The population here is still mostly native, and the median age is going up.

Young couples are having smaller families. These facts all add up to a lower membership in the long

term for Beth El." Marty, who lives at 1515 North 51st street, is strongly committed to mid-town neighborhoods. He admits that the Jewish population is moving west, but he feels this migration might change in the coming decade.

The rising cost of energy, particularly the priGe of transportation may cause people to re-evaluate their situation. Unless the people who move west bring their institutions with them, they may be forced to move back east. Already the general population of Omaha is returning to the inner city, but so far the Jewish community has not joined the movement," he said.

Marty feels the biggest single problem facing the Jewish community in the Eighties concerns demographics. "We will not be the same community in the 1980s as we were in the 1950s and 1960s. The type of institutions and programs developed will have to change and reflect this difference. Today's community has a lot of professionals instead of entrepreneurs. As a result, money is a problem. Beth El along with all the Jewish institutions in Omaha will face economic problems. We simply can't afford all the programs we now operate."

The economic crunch may cause the synagogues and the Jewish Federation to work closer together in the coming years, according to Marty. He sees many areas for cooperation, especially from a physical point of view. "The Jewish Community Center can provide space for programs which the synagogues cannot," he said.

While Marty feels it is a lot easier for the Federation to be the dominant force in the community since the synagogues don't have the

Marty also believes there are a number of critical general community issues for the Eighties.

These include housing for low income groups and busing. "In the 1960s, Jews were the spearhead of social liberalism. Times have changed. Today, where groups could speak up, they don't. I think this is a very selfish thing. What is it Hillel said, 'If I am only for myself who will be for me.1 The community ought to be making statements," he said.

Saying all of this though, Marty remains — "realistically optimistic" about the future. — D.D.

Establishing a focus for Jewish art and culture When was the last time you entered the Jewish Community Center through its main entrance and turned left? For many people who visit the JCC, the northern section might just as well be in another building. Vet the entire cultural center of the Jewish Federation is situated on the north side. The library, theater. Jewish Press, dance studio, and several offices including Judi Rosenblatt's, are all located on this side.

Judi is the director of cultural and creative arts for the JCC. One of her goals for the 80s is to make more people aware of all the programs her department offers, and there are many of them.

Art, music, dance, film, theater, Jewish lectures, a school of continuing studies, and special events including Yom Hashoah and Yom Ha'atzmaut are all her responsibility.

She has only been in her position since last November, but Judi is already working hard to shore up what she terms "a real void in the area of culture at the JCC. Our part of the JCC is one place people don't know about," she said. "1 want to improve on that. People in Omaha have to become sensitive to all these areas. My main priority now is to see that these areas function."

Jewish community. "There was no continuity of programs, no on-going staff," he said. "Changes • can only take place when the JCC decides to make a commitment. They have done so by establishing this department."

The emphasis of programming has been and will continue to be predominantly Jewish, according to Judi. "But it will not be exclusively Jewish," said said. "Basically, we are such a small Jewish community that the resources for total Jewish content in all nine areas would be very difficult — not to mention expensive — since we would have to bring In much of the Jewish art from outside Omaha.

"Our display wall is not going to have 12 months of Jewish art on it, because wp don't have the local artists to produce it. The cost of bringing in a couple of good quality art shows would be very expensive," she said.

Judi does not expect to bring in to Omaha many expensive art shows. "Our current budget is too small to accommodate more. The only way we can improve the Jewish art here is with more money. If people want more Jewish art they will have to budget for it," she said.

"There has been a void in the community for many years when it comes to Jewish culture and art. It is important to have these things for a viable Jewish community," Judi said. "Culture is a very strong part of the Jewish people."

Judi believes the cultural atmosphere in Omaha has increased over the pastfew years, and this momentum will help the JCC. D.D.

To that end, she has recruited chairmen for all nine of her committees. She is now busy selecting people to serve on these committees "My goal is to build the department up to a viable state and make it a cultural center for all the Jews in Omaha," she said.

One person Judi contacted to help her was Fred Simon, a longtime activist in the Omaha cultural community. He is a member of the Metro Arts Council, Opera/Omaha and the Omaha Symphony.

Fred believes the reason this Center department was founded was to establish a focus for Jewish art and cultural activities for the benefit of the entire

Moving to Mexico?

Omaha is what yon make it "I always hear my friends say, who wants to live in Omaha? Why not Los Angeles or Boston or somewhere else," Dell Perelman said. "Why can't people accept Omaha and say this is my home, let's enjoy ourselves. Omaha is what you make it, and I'd like to make it home."

Dell is a second-year law student at Creighton University. He is a native of Omaha, and his family belongs to Beth r-iEI Synagogue. Dell wants to remain in Omaha after graduation; yet he feels he may be forced to leave. Dell, 24, is single, and he is unsure if he will be able to meet any single Jewish women here.

Saying all of this, though, Dell is unsure if he can make Omaha a place to meet Jewish singles; or if for that matter any organization can allow him to meet other singles.

"I am skeptical as to whether or not an organization can be established for Jewish singles. These people are not in ' high school or college any more.

Anything organized has a bad connotation. But people are looking for something. I know I would like a place where I could go to meet people," he said.

Dell attended Northwestern University, outside of Chicago, as an undergraduate. Surrounded by Jews all 'the time, he wasn't that conscious of who he was with. When he returned toOmah;i for law school, the first year and one-half of school completely dominated him, and he didn't realize he was back in Omaha. Now, however, the pressures of law school have diminished, and Dell

would like to meet Jewish singles.

At the recent annual meeting of the Jewish Federation, "Our Gang," a singles group guided by Temple Israel's Rabbi Barry Weinstein, won an award for community service. Dell tried out "Our Gang," and came away unsatisfied.

"It was a Halloween costume party, and I don't think people really relaxed. A close group of friends can get away with wearing silly costumes. When people don't know one another, it's ridiculous," he said. "I think people need parties appropriate to their age. To gel people to come to things, I think you need informal activities, something where a person can come, sit, drink and leave if he wants.

Then there is nopressure.

"What it all boils down to is this: Jewish people in Omaha for one reason or another have a real inferiority complex about being single. Omaha has a reputation as a great family town, and I think that's accurate. But for singles it's not so easy."

After Creighton Law, Dell is unsure where he'll practice. "I love the big city, but Omaha has a lot to offer and I'd like to stay. People say that education and culture can only be found in big cities. I disagree. I believe they can be found anywhere.JThe only thing I find lacking in Omaha is the social life. I am bored by it," Dell said.

Louis Solomon, executive director of the Jewish Federation, has said that if singles in Omaha want certain programs or activities, they should speak up and

He doesn't place any blame on the Federation or the synagogues. If, however, the number of singles increases, Dell believes the community will have to take notice and try to provide something.

A negative side effect of a poor Jewish singles scene is intermarriage, according to Dell. "Personally, I know I want to marry a Jew. But sometimes I feel a necessity to date non-Jews, because I want to go out."

Looking to the 80s Dell anticipates getting his feet on the ground professionally, and "becoming the type of person I am striving to be." He believes a challenge of this new decade

will be to make people say to themselves again "we're Jewish."

"This society seems as if it is falling apart," Dell said. "People are lost In the process. Jews have to reach out for what our heritage has given us. What the generations before have given us has been done over a long period of time. It works. To survive as a Jewish community we must look at our background to see how we have survived. The traditions of Judaism are helpful and I want to give these to my children like my parents gave them to me. We must pass it on.

"This is a ME generation. Leisure for the moment. Everyone wants to take and no one wants to give. It is sad to see, and If it continues we are all going to suffer."D.D.

A European hotel is in Omaha's future A European hotel in the middle of the Midwest is what Henk Meyer wants to make the Ramada Inn Central. Henk, born in Denmark and raised In Holland, brings with him European ways of hospitality that he learned while watching his parents run hotels in Holland and while attending hotel school.

Henk Meyer are a desk clerk who asks the guest, "Can I help you?" instead of saying, "Yeah, what do you want?" and a manager who is in the lobby greeting the guests. In the room, it is a mint on the pillow and a card in a champagne glass offering a complimentary glass of wine with dinner in the restaurant.

"The hotel business is fascinating to me. I have a computer programming background, but the hotel business is in my blood," Henk said. "This is the hospitality industry. Our job is to be hospitable and to care. The personal touch of service makes the difference.

"I don't want the customer to worry about whether the television or air conditioning is going to work. I want the guests to feel at home in their rooms. Some people are on the road 25 days a month and they want more than Just a hotel room.

"Right now we are putting 'tender loving care' into our rooms. We are replacing the inexpensive reproductions on the walls with macrame hangings, putting ruffles on the beds and replacing the decor with a luxury look."

To keep his eye on the activities in the hotel, Henk moved his office to a more visible position.

The manager's office used to be behind the bookkeepers office. Henk changed places with the bookkeeper, and is located right behind the front desk in the hub of the daily activity.

Henk's job as General Manager of Ramada Inn Central gives him overall control of the hotel through the department managers. He thinks that quality control is one of the major parts of his job.

"When there is a function in one of our banquet rooms 1 check to see that everything is set up properly. I go into the kitchen and taste the food to insure that it is of the highest quality. Nothing is served if it isn't right."

As part of his goal to offer quality service, Henk opens the mail everyday. If there is a complaint about the hotel he answers the letter personally and within 48 hours. He said that in most hotels the mail is opened and answered by a secretary, desk clerk or someone in the front office.

Henk likes the challenge of the hotel business.

His previous job before coming to Omaha last December was in Bismark, North Dakota, wherthe took over a hotel that needed a lot of work.

"I took the job in Bismark because It was a challenge I couldn't resist. Everyone told me that the hotel couldn't be brought back up to quality.

When someone tells me it can't be done I bite into it.

Henk Meyer came to the United States eight years ago after marrying an American. His family now includes his daughter, Laura Leigh, two. Hank speaks with only a slight Dutch accent which he says is not unusual because he is multilingual. He speaks Dutch, Danish, German, French, Spanish, Swedish and knows a smattering of Croatian and Russian. Since coming to America he hasn't used his foreign language skills much.

"Last time I was in Holland I had trouble remembering some of the Dutch words. Usually when speaking a language I think in that language.

In Holland, I had to translate some of the Dutch words into English before speaking. My language teacher told me that as soon as someone dreamed in a language he could understand that language."

Languages are very Important in Holland since Dutch is spoken in only one country and some parts of South Africa. Most Dutch people know at least one or two languages.

"It is unthinkable to hire a bellman in Holland who doesn't speak at least three languages or a front desk clerk who doesn't know four languages," Henk said. "Surprisingly, one of the languages many Dutch people speak is Yiddish. And the Dutch language has many Yiddish words in it. There Passover Haggadahs are written in Yiddish."

Jews are accepted as part of the Dutch population. They are Dutch citizens with a different religion. No one harrasses the Jewish people. In Holland the Jewish population is very religious with many people observing the Sabbath and keeping Kosher. His parent's hotel always had a Kosher kitchen.

What does the decade of the 80s hold for Henk Meyer and the hotel business? According to Henk the next ten years are going to be an exciting time for hotels.

"Computer equipment will give hotels more controls over costs which is good because all of the price increases can't be passed on to the customer.

There will also be an upgrading in the service being offered. People aren't going to put up with, ..:,.': . mediocre service."

For Henk the decade will hopefully bring a move into the corporate side of the Ramada Inns company. Although he would miss being In the daily activity of running a hotel, Henk always is looking forward to new challenges. E.G.

Monday, March 31 Siyum Service 7 a.m.

It is traditional for the first-born to fast on the eve of . Passover in commemorationof the deliverance of the first-born Israelites in Egypt. It is, however, the practice for the first-born to attend a Siyum in the Synagogue. A Siyum is the completion of the study of a section of the Talmud, in honor of which they may partake of refreshments. They are then exempt from the fast.

Congregational Seder As has been the practice for a number of years, Beth Israel Synagogue will-hold a congregational Seder on the first night of Passover, March 31, at 7 p.m. Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Cohen are chairpersons of the congregational event. Reservations are $10 for adults and $5 for children under 13 years of age. The Seder will be conducted by Rabbi Nadof f and Cantor Fettman with complete congregational participation. An excellent Passover Seder menu is being planned by the committee in charge.

THE ORDER OF THE SEDER SERVICE 1. Recite the Kiddush, after which all drink the first of the four prescribed cups of wine.

2. Wash the hands, omitting the customary benediction.

3. Eat the celery, dipping it in salt-water, and reciting the prescribed blessing.

4. The middle matzo is broken and a half is put away for aflkomen (dessert). To keep the children interested, they are encouraged to hide afikomen, and it is later redeemed from them on the promise of a reward.

5. Recite the service from the Haggadah.

6. Wash the hands for the meal, reciting the customary blessing.

7. Recite the blessing over the matzo.

8. Eat the bitter herb dipped in Charoses.

9. Eat the bitter herb and matzo sandwich.

10. Serve the festival meal.

11. Eat a piece of the afikomen, as dessert to the meal.

12. Say the grace after meals.

13. Recite the remaining portion of the Haggadah.

14. Conclude the Seder with Passover songs.

THE SEDER TABLE The Seder table is the center of the Pesach celebration. Upon, it all the symbols of Pesach nave been gathered. A large plate is placed before the master of the bouse upon which are the following: 1. Three matzos, covered.

2. A roasted meatbone, on the upper right, as a remembrance of the time when our ancestors used to offer a lamb sacrifice in honor of the holiday.

3. A roasted egg, on the upper left, as a remembrance of the additional festival offering used by our ancestors in celebration of the joyous event.

4. Morror (bitter herbs — horseradish, romalne lettuce leaves or any other bitter tasting food), placed in the center, to remind us of the bitter slavery suffered by our people during their long stay in Egypt. .

5. Charoses, on the lower right. Charoses is a mixture of nuts, apples, cinnamon, almonds, raisins, and wine. It serves as a symbol of the mortar

Lemon Ice Passover is a very busy time for the Jewish balabosta. Lemon-orange ice is a good dessert or snack.

2 cups warm water 3/4 cup sugar % cup lemon Juice 1 tsp. grated lemon or orange rind Melt sugar in warm water. Add juice and rind.

Let stand for five minutes. Pour into an ice cube tray. Freeze to a mushy consistency. Stir several ^times. It should be slushy when served. Serves 4-6.

Tongue in Tomato Sauce 1 beef tongue, cooked until almost tender with bay leaf 2 large onions, diced 2 stalks celery, diced 1 small green pepper, diced % 1b. fresh mushrooms, whole 1 can kosher for Passover tomato-mushroom sauce 3/4 cup water Remove skin from tongue. Cut into slices.

Lightly brown all the vegetables. Add to tomato sauce and water. Bring to a boil, add tongue and cook until tender.

A Spanish omelet is sure to hit the spot after ail the big seder meals. It serves four people and a fresh citrus saladn-and some type of light cake and coffee should round ou\the meah \ itonaon,diced 1 tblsp. milk , _ - ^ j ^ u p tomato mushroom 2 tblsps. butter sauce Ismail green pepper, diced y4 cup water 1 tomato, diced Saute fresh vegetables in butter until golden.

Stir in tomato sauce and water. Simmer five minutes, stirring constantly. Make the omelet with the 9 eggs and milk. Pour half the sauce In the center of the omelet and fold it in half. Place in a serving dish. Top with the rest of the sauce and serve. Serves 4.

Grease a cookie sheet very well. Drop by teaspoonfuis on the cookie sheet allowing room for them to spread. Preheat oven to 400 degrees and bake 15-20 minutes. Makes about 3 dozen cookies.

New campaign logo debute on Passover Boris Shwartzman, a recent Jewish immigrant from the Soviet Union, explains the logo he is drawing for the Women's Campaign in 1980.

Jeanette Nadoff (left) and Deenle Meyerson, cochairmen of the Campaign, encouraged Mr. Schwartzman to take an active role utilizing artistic talent. The logo will be featured in all the publicity of the Women's Campaign because of its innovative design which is said to pull together two Jewish concepts. The six-pointed star is a symbol of Jewish existence, while the bush growing out of the

star symbolizes Jewish survival. The logo also brings to mind for Mrs. Nadoff the biblical quote "And he looked, and behold the Bush burned with fire, and the Bush was not consumed." The burning bush thus symbolizes Jewish continuity through adversity. Mr. Shwartzman said he Is pleased to help the Campaign by drawing its logo. "I am proud and happy to be in Omaha rather than the Soviet Union and I thank the Jewish people of Omaha for giving my family its freedom on Passover."

By Susan Wlntroub She has a hard, worn face, but her eyes are deep and her smile soft. She is large-boned and tall, yet graceful and pretty. Her slightly hunched-over stance and graying hair lie, as she is only 29.

She is Avital Shcharansky, and she spends every day of her life working to free her husband, Anatoly, from prison in Christopol, Russia.

I first met Avital while I was in Israel last year. As I walked into the apartment, I heard her speaking Russian rather loudly on the telephone.

She was talking to Anatoly's brother, Leonid, in Moscow, to learn of any news about her husband. Leonid could not hear her because of all the people that had gathered there, and they decided to try again the next night.

Exhausted, Avital got up and sat down next to me on the sofa. One look into her eyes and I could see the whole, . heartbreaking story. . .

Avital (Natalya in Russian) and Anatoly met in front of the Moscow synagogue in October, 1973. Avita! began

to go to Tolik's Hebrew class, and to involve herself more in the struggle to emigrate to Israel. They participated in protests and demonstrations, and time after time were brought by the police to the "detoxifier." With this convenient form of arrest, refuseniks (those who apply for exit visas and are refused) are locked up in cold, empty rooms and later interrogated. Some were set free afterwards, and some served 15-day sentences as a lesson.

Other forms of punishment and inconvenience afflicted these Jews who demanded their right to live in Israel.

After applying for visas, they often lost their jobs, and then were arrested for parasitism. Tolik had been dismissed from his job in 1974, and finally found work as a private tutor of physics, mathematics, and English. Refuseniks were "tailed" by KGB agents in their mysterioiis, black Volgas 24 hours a day.

Sometimes agents rode in taxis with demonstrators and paid half the fare!

Anatoly finally insisted that Avital apply for a visa. For a long time she had hopes she could wait until Tolya

received his, but now it was evident that they would not be able to leave together.

A few months later she succeeded in obtaining the precious pass, but.was only given two weeks for preparation instead of the usual month (or legal year).

Anatoly had been under preventive arrest (illegal in U.S.S.R.) and still they found no one who would take the risk of marrying them.

At the last moment Avital found a man who knew Tolya and agreed to arrange the wedding — for the day before her exit visa expired (July 5, 1974). Miraculously Tolik, who had been imprisoned, was released that day.

Everything was over so soon, and they had to say goodbye hoping that Anatoly would be free soon after.

The nex 12 >A years found Avital shuttling from country to country, gathering support for her husband's case. Day after day she met with friends, reporters, Congressmen, scientists. She planned demonstrations, wrote letters, and made connections with important people. And somehow she found the strength... the strength

Meanwhile, Anatoly worked hard in Moscow to help other refuseniks, and joined in the Helsinki Group to expose the Soviet's Intentions of dishonoring the Helsinki Accords.

Throughout these years their love for each other grew stronger, and their letters reinforcing that love continued.

On March 5,1977, Anatoly was arrested and accused of spying for the United States, of anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda, and of subverting Soviet Authority. After a year and a half of solitary confinement while investigations were being conducted, the world answered Avital's plea for help, and participated in showing the Soviets that they would not tolerate Jewish persecution anymore.

The trial was on July 10,1978. It was a farce. The Soviet authorities called it an "open trial," but only Tolik's brother was allowed in; the rest were strangers bused In by the authorities. Tolya took, on his own defense, as his mother's . \ choice for a lawyer had been turned ' •

On July 14, Anatoly began his 13 year sentence: three years in prison and 10 in a strict regime work camp. He Is allowed only one letter per month, and one meeting per half year. That meeting can never be with Avital, however, as all her requests to visit Russia have gone unanswered. He never receives his wife's letters, but knows she writes every day.

And so their struggle continues.

Avital's book, Next Year in Jerusalem, not only describes their plight in an almost poetic style, but also gives

important insight into the treatment of Jews in Russia. The thrust of the book is particularly applicable now, during Passover. For we conclude our Seders with the words "Next Year in Jerusalem!" just as Anatoly concluded his trial with that same hope and prayer: "My nation has been dispersed all over the world for more than two thousands years. But wherever Jews are found, each year they repeat: 'Next Year in Jerusalem!'

And now, when I am farther than ever from my people and from my Avital, when I face many difficult years of imprisonment, I say, addressing my people and my Avital: 'L'shana ha-baab b'Yerushalayim!

Solar pond conies of age â&#x20AC;˘Israeli scientists hope that natural energy sources will be the key to cheap fuel in the future.

One answer to the energy crisis is this solar pond at the Dead Sea, developed by Israeli scientists, which can channel energy from the sun to run a 150-kilowatt power plant. ' ,

By Ellen Davidson Ein Bokek â&#x20AC;&#x201D; In the not too distant future, the combination of the Dead Sea and the sun shining on it could produce most of the electricity needs of Israel, which is almost totally dependent on imported oil.

This message of hope was conveyed here recently by Israel's Minister of Energy, Yitzhak Modai, as he inaugurated the world's largest solar electric power station, adjacent tothe Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth.

Modai said that the two-acre solar pond and its 150-kilowatt power plant nearby demonstrates the commercial viability of solar power. The Energy Minister expressed the hope that the unique plant developed and produced by Israeli scientists and engineers was the start of a process of converting the Dead Sea into a "Sea of Life." Officialsof Ormat Turbines and Solmat Ltd., the companies which developed and built the plant, predicted that an expanded system of solar ponds in the Dead Sea region could meet almost all of Isreal's electricity needs by the end of the century. For Israel this means a huge decrease in oil imports, accompanied by a decrease in economic and political dependencies.

The concept of the solar pond, which may spell the end of petroleum dependence in all areas of the world where water, salt and sun are available, is the brainchild of Dr. Rudolf Bloch and Professor Harry Zvi Tabor. The pool, lined in special black material, is made up of layers of water differing in salinity.

Very hot water accumulates in the bottom layers of the pond from which energy may be extracted. Hot water is passed through heat exchangers producing energy to power turbines designed specifically to produce electricity.

Normally, in a non-solar pond, heat from the sun is reradiated from the water because of convection currents. A cycle of constant motion between cooler and warmer water prevents the buildup of heat in the water, so that even on the hottest summer day a lake will not usually be warmer than a tepid bathtub.

In a solar pond, which is specifically designed to store heat from the sun, the opposite is true. When a shallow pond is layered with salt water on the bottom and fresh water on top, the heavier salt

water is trapped below and just gets hotter and hotter, and can reach temperatures near the boiling point. And once the pond has heated up, hot water can be pumped year round even when the sun is not shining.

According to Dr. Shmuel Ofry, Coordinator of Energy Research and Development at the Ministry of Finance, one of the biggest break-throughs of the solar pond system is that it has builtin storage. Some other solar energy devices are riot very useful when it is cloudy, and have therefore been used mainly together with auxiliary energy sources.

The solar pond could change all that, and in addition, it is cheap. "The major stumbling block in the use of solar energy has been that the cost is prohibitive," says Dr. Ofry. "All the technical problems of solar energy have been solved, but using it to produce electricity, for example, winds up costing between 25 and 30 times more' than fossil fuels.

"With improved technology, the solar pond could become competitive with" oil â&#x20AC;&#x201D; you don't need the glass, the metal frames of standard solar collectors," he says, "just the cost of digging and lining the pond." Ofry is referring to the flat plate collectors which decorate many Israeli houses and are limited to heating water.

Israel, long a leader in the use and development of solar energy, is the only country to have successfully applied the idea of the solar ponds. It was the first country to being using and exporting individual rooftop collectors. Now, almost one-third of all Israelis use solar energy to heat their bathwater, the highest percentage in the world.

Officials of Ormat, which has already exported twenty million dollars' worth of low temperature turbines, also announced that within two to three years a five-megawatt power station, based on a one-square-kilometer pool, would be built in the Dead Sea region. The larger project will serve as a model for the 20-25 megawatt plants which are planned for construction by 1985 and which will have the capacity to produce some 2,000 megawatts of electricity. The cost, officials also predicted, will be some $2,000 per kilowatt, which, they said, Is price similar to that of expensive hydroelectric energy.

Life flight provides vital service The sounds of the Life Flight helicopter blades beating in the air can be heard as it approaches the landing pad adjacent to the emergency room at St. Joseph Hospital.

The white chopper with the blue letter gently sets down, and the critically injured patient is quickly transported to an examination room. Injured in a car accident, the patient is scheduled for immediate surgery.

Although the injuries are severe, the long term prognosis for recovery is good.

The goal of the program is to transport critically injured patients as quickly as possible.

Life Flight, based at St. Joseph Hospital, was started in May 1979. The goal of the program is to transport critically injured patients as quickly as possible to the best medical care available. The helicopter is an airborne emergency room staffed by a highly trained nurse, a pilot and is fully equipped with medical supplies such as cardiac monitors, defibrillators and axygen.

Marcia has always been a nurse In critical care situations either in emergency rooms or in intensive care units. While living in Palo Alto, California, Marcia was part of the team that assisted noted heart specialist Norman Shumway with his surgery including heart transplants.

Marcia works every fourth day for 24 hours. When not riding in the helicopter Marcia works In the emergency room or perfects her skills in surgery. Most times she gets very little sleep during her 24 hour shift. But she doesn't mind the lack of sleep.

"I thrive on the job. 1 like the uncertainty of what awaits me each day.

When the helicopter takes off I don't know exactly what is on the other end.

Most of the injuries call on all my skills and my storage of knowledge."

explained. "Many of our patients wouldn't survive a five or six hour ambulance ride. A helicopter ride covering the same distance may only take an hour.

The costs of the transportation are usually paid by the insurance companies. They know how important speed is in treating patients. Besides, you can't put a value on a human life."

During her days away from home, husband, Michael, a professor of philosophy of education at UNO, is in charge of the children, Alan, 5, and Anessa, 2.

Marcia has always been a nurse in critical care situations.

Marcia Katz, a two-year resident of Omaha, is one of the nurses who rides the Life Flight helicopter. Being chosen as part of the team was the culmination of Marcia's 10 years in the nursing field.

"The schedule is perfect for me. I really like to work, but wouldn't want to work five days a week with two small children," Marcia explained. "The children have a better relationship with Michael because he takes care of them many hours each week."

To qualify for her position, Marcia participated in an intensive one year nurse practitioner course. She had to pass a test and show that she is capable of treating a patient in an emergency situation without the help of a doctor.

Unlike a paramedic who cannot start treatment on a patient without a doctor's orders, Marcia is on her own to practice within the Life Flight Protocol.

The St. Joseph Life Flight program is one of 20 in the United States. The helicopter is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The program offers service within a 200 mile radius of Omaha including Nebraska and parts of Iowa, Kansas and South Dakota. Life Flight averages one call each day, and the number is increasing as the service becomes better known.

"Being a nurse on Life Flight is the best job I have ever had," Marcia said.

"I have autonomy in the patient care.

My job is to stabilize the patient for transportation to St. Joseph Hospital or other regional hospitals where further "treatment is available. I can start drugs and iv's and even put tubes in lungs, a Job usually done by an anesthesiologist or an anesthetist."

"Time makes a big difference in treating critically injured patients. In serious cases getting to the hospital 20 minutes sooner can make the difference between life and death."

Life is unpredictable, not easy to plan The only plans Cece Zorinsky is making for the 1980s is not to make any plans. She learned in the 1970s that her life is unpredictable and not easy to plan.

The last decade saw her go from private citizen to wife of a U.S. Senator. What the next decade will bring is dependent on Ed Zorinsky's political plans.

"I am not a long range planner and that has helped me in the last few years. " I can roll with the punches. It's hard to plan very far ahead as things are always changing. I found that being flexible is particularly helpful as a political wife," Cece said.

"I'm very pessimistic about the 80s although I am an optimistic person by nature. Some people feel that technology will solve such problems as fuel shortages and pollution. I don't think so.

I feel that there will be a lot of changes.

We'll have to conserve more and waste less."

Cece is interested in conservation but has found apathy both in Washington and in Omaha. "There are many environmental organizations but the focus on ecology seems to have blurred. * Even those people who are interested in their environment sometimes show a lack of respect for others. After Sun Day in Washington a couple of years ago, the clean up bill for the litter was thousands of dollars. Even those who care are careless."

working in her husband's office. She has become active in the National Women's Democratic Club and the Congressional Wives Task Force. She works part time for Washington Whirlaround which conducts tours for visitors to Washington.

Yet, despite having a busy schedule Cece feels that she could be more productive. "Sometimes I feel like I'm not accomplishing enough. I perform a service in Ed's office but I want something productive for myself and

others. My excuse the last three years has been that I can't get involved in anything ongoing because I want to be able to come home to Omaha during the Congressional recesses. But I don't see myself spending the next three years without doing more."

What Cece is looking forward to is the continuing excitement of living in our . nation's capital. She reads about people and sees them on television and then actually gets to meet and know them. At dinner parties she has sat next to people

"In the next decade we'll have to deal with inflation, increasing world population and world hunger along with conflicts such as Iran and Afghanistan.

And the times are worrisome for Israel.

There are no easy solutions to any of the problems."

Although the blonde, vivacious Cece Zorinsky is not predicting what the changes will be in her life, she is looking forward to some difference in the coining years. For the past three years she has been adjusting to life in Washington, meetine new people and

"I have adjusted to Washington and know that I am fortunate to have the experiences I am having. But I would be very happy to go back to Omaha If Ed would decide to leave politics. Some of the wives would be crushed if they had to leave Washington. But I liked my life the way it was before we left Omaha."

"The hardest part about moving to Washington has been the separation from the family. The Zorinskys had spent all their married life in Omaha.

Being away from the family for the Jewish holidays is difficult. They celebrate with friends in Washington but it's not the same as being home with the family and old close friends.

"I don't feel like Washington is home," Cece said. "Mrs. Arthur Goldberg asked me once where my home was. I replied that was a good question. She told me that 'home is where your husband is'."

When Cece first moved to Washington she was overwhelmed and had the desire to return home. But time has brought about an adjustment to Washington but without the feeling of permanence she had in Omaha.

One optimistic note from Cece about the 80s is the continuation of people caring about people. "There are a lot of good people in Washington trying to do a good Job. "It's rewarding to see Ed's office solve people's problems. He has helped individuals who need assistance with such things as Social Security and immigration as well as being involved in legislation on national and state levels.

Recently he was Instrumental in extraditing Americans from Turkish prisons. He has also played a part in helping Soviet Jews leave Russia. There are many things that can be accomplished in Washington and those who are helped are truly grateful for someone's caring about them. â&#x20AC;&#x201D; E.G.

Two women at different stages in their lives started businesses so they could have flexibility of time and still use their skills in the working world.

Working from offices in their homes, Barbara Simon and Min Rimmerman provide services in public relations, publicity and advertising.

For Min, the opening of her one person agency, Words and Pictures, was just another stage in what she calls the recycling process. "My life has been a series of recyclings. When I saw that my nest was going to be empty, I started college, majoring in Journalism/Tgraduated from college the same > , week that my youngest daughter graduated from higlj school," Min said.

"Then I was recycled into public relations director for Richman Gordman Stores. Now I do part time public relations work. I expect to recycle myself again someday, but I'm not sure just what I will be."

In one of the earlier phases of her life, Min learned about public relations and advertising as a volunteer for Opera/Omaha. For 10 years she was in charge of the total publicity program including advertising, writing a company newsletter and the program book, and arranging hospitality for visiting artists. Opera/Omaha is now a client of Words and Pictures.

Min also gave countless hours to various service organizations including Beth El Sisterhood and the Omaha District Dental Auxiliary. Now she limits her volunteer activities to the International Association of Business Communicators of Omaha and American Women in Radio and Television. For • the IABC she runs a free job placement service and is scholarship chairman.

Min believes it is necessary for businesses and organizations to communicate with the public.

"Everybody has something to say or a message to deliver," she said. "There is a tremendous need for information. It used to be that everything was on a one-to-one basis. If you wanted to sell something you sent a salesman. We don't have that person-toperson contact anymore. That's why direct mail is important and is a tremendous bargain.

"I'm doing a service for people. For one of my clients I write a bimonthly newsletter which is proving to be an effective management tool. It helps the employees learn more about their work

Ail off ice in the home and about the company. It rewards their efforts with recognition. I get a good feeling knowing that I am helping people communicate."

For Min there are no regrets that she did not venture into the public relations field earlier in life.

She thinks that her seven years as public relations *• director for Richman Gordman Stores came at the right time in her life. "" "Mature women are a tremendous asset for a company. They have less absenteeism, are more dedicated to their work and have fewer things on their minds like a sick child at home," Min said. "In my seven years on the job I did not take one day off because of illness."

Leaving her full time job to work part time has given Min more time to play tennis, work in the garden and travel with her husband, Dr. Al Rimmerman. But she still puts in about 18 hours a week working for her clients. Min likes working at home where she has fewer interruptions. And, she said, "I never have any trouble getting an out wire."

Barbara Simon started her own publicity and promotion business so she could have the flexibility of time that she couldn't get working for someone else. "I never quite resolved the working mother thing," she said. ."Even though I worked full time for four years I was never comfortable with the children coming home from school to an empty house. I could never adjust to my children being latch key children.

"I also suddenly became aware that my children who are 15 and 12 will be leaving home in a few years. I want to have as much time with them as possible. Because of my desire to have flexible hours it was necessary to have a high pressure, hard working, highly paid job. But it will have to wait. I'm willing to give up some of the income to buy the time now."

For Barbara, starting Barbara Simon Words was a natural extension of the volunteer work she did for 14 years and the paid work for four years.

She got her start in publicity by preparing promotions for many of the volunteer organizations she belonged to. "If there was a fundraiser, an art show or some other event, the publicity job always fell to me. For three or four years I edited the program for the Opera," Barbara said. "I made

contacts with newspaper people and learned how to write press releases and get favorable placement in the news media."

Then in 1973 Barbara took her first paid position and spent-the next few years refining her writing, fundralsing and publicity skills. During this time ' * she was the assistant for development to the Dean of the College of Public Affairs and Community • Service at UNO, edited the 1976 New Years Edition of the Jewish Press and worked for the Federation as the staff in charge of the Women's Division of the Philanthropies, publicity and grants.

In 1977, when the Festival of Biblical Art and Archaeology was conceived Barbara wrote the grant proposals to the Nebraska Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. When the planning for the Festival went into full swing Barbara left her job with Federation to head the publicity campaign on a volunteer basis.

"I really learned the publicity business by helping to publicize the Festival," Barbara said.

"The Festival was promoted in five states through newspaper articles, TV and radio spots and interviews. We were successful beyond my wildest expectations, and all the coverage was free except for a little paid advertising.''

The completion of her work on the Festival found Barbara again looking for paid work. After some research, Barbara opened Barbara Simon Words specializing in publicity and promotion.

Working from and office in her home gives Barbara the freedom and flexibility she needs.

"I define publicity as everything except bought advertising. My clients are largely people who are just beginning to promote themselves. They are people like doctors, lawyers, architects and business people who are selling services not products," Barbara explained.

She primarily produces brochures for clients and also works to get her clients mentioned often in the news media. Barbara has also written annual reports and employee benefit handbooks.

"I am a one person office. I can give complete <> attention to each client and see the job through from beginning to end," Barbara said. "In the promotion and public relations field there is always room (or the individual service and attention that a larger office may not be able to give."—E.G.

Women working in the 80s

Real estate: a challenging career Myra Goldman has made the transition from full time homemaker to real estate salesperson with a stop in the retail business on the way. Five years ago Myra left behind the volunteer activities, the numerous tennis games and the long lunches with her friends to work in the family's ready to wear business.

"I found the business world challenging. Meeting and working with people was enjoyable for me," Myra said. The business was sold, and my

husband entered the real estate field.

Since I like selling and helping our customers, he encouraged me to go into real estate also.

"It took a lot of gumption for us to make a change at this time of our life.

We had three children of college age. So many people feel trapped In their lives.

We've never been sorry that we made the change. I believe in the theory of the book. Passages. In everyone's lifetime different things are right at different times. I'm always open to options and

find challenge in anything new."

Myra thinks that the 40's and 50's can be the best and most productive years of a woman's life. The children have left home and a woman has time to devote to her own interests. Myra has a lot of energy and knows what she wants to do with her life. She would be bored if she weren't working.

Myra has the drive to succeed and could be a workaholic if she let herself.

She works almost every Sunday and many evenings for a total of about 50 hours each week. Being an independent agent for NBC Real Estate Co. is like running a small business. The salesperson works on straight commission and pays rent to the company for office space. Myra also pays all of her expenses including advertising.

"I am my own boss at NBC. I can work as little or as much as I want. The nice part of my job Is that I'm not confined to one place. Selling real estate Is a terrific job for a woman because she can set her own hours. But this is not a . part-time job for me. Besides a woman knows what appeals to another woman and that's who usually buys the houses."

Myra thinks that the 40s and 50s can be the best and most productive years of a woman's life.

In addition to working, the energetic Myra attends various courses that will be helpful to her career. She is taking a class at Westside High School in home restoration with an eye to getting into the renovation aspect of real estate.

Recently she completed 30 hours of schooling towards her Graduate Real Estate Certification. The total course takes 90 hours to complete and covers topics such as farm brokerage, finance, new building construction, deeds, trusts and land contracts.

"To be a true professional I must keep up on all types of available financing and constantly study to improve my skills," Myra explained.

Myra is Involved with her husband, Richard, and his partner Sandy Kasin, in building unique, high quality contemporary homes. "We think the future is exciting for the type of houses we are building," Myra said. "When Richard and I went out of town we used to look at retail stores. Now when we travel we look at new homes and condominiums to get ideas for our building business.

"Selling real estate can be a very satisfying profession. I spent one year helping a young couple find a house they could afford to buy. When they finally bought a house I felt a great sense of satisfaction in knowing I was able to

could for them."

For Myra there is also the knowledge that she is capable of being a businesswoman. Her three children are proud of her accomplishments. They are John, 24, an architect in San Francisco; Jane, 22, a senior at UNO; and Dan, 19, a sophomore at Wlllams . College. Myra explained that the children believe that women should have something of their own especially a job.

"I don't agree that all women should work outside the home. I'm not sorry that I didn't work earlier in my life. My children were young and I wanted to be home with them."

While caring for her home and children, Myra managed to find time to go (0 school and be active in volunteer organizations. Myra majored in speech therapy at Northwestern University before her marriage. Later, she attended the University of Omaha for a time. She also helped train people to speak who had their larynxes removed because of cancer.

She was active in Trouping Theater sponsored by National Council of Jewish Women. She appeared in many skits for Temple Israel. Using her considerable energy Myra worked for Philanthropies often and was a Great Books Discussion leader.

"About four years ago, Richard and I were active in Marriage Encounter when it was first getting started. Our Weekend was a fabulous experience at that time of our lives. I think of our experience with warm thoughts," Myra said.

The strawberry blonde Myra .Goldman is a warm, outgoing person who describes herself as "the friendly sort." Meeting new people is an interesting experience for her. She likes going into crowds of strangers and has been known to start conversations on airplanes with her sealmates. Being an extrovert is not a prerequisite for selling real estate. According to Myra it helps to know what motivates and influences ; people.

"I don't agree thatall women should work outside the home."

"The most important part of the real estate business is knowing your product ' and being honest and sincere. Listening to my clients and finding out what they want is important. I have to show people houses that are right for them. Showing an expensive home to someone who can't afford it is not the way to do business. I don't believe in making people house poor.

"Giving 100 per cent service to my clients is the way I work selling real estate. Perseverance, enthusiasm and dedication are qualities I try to bring to my work. Every day is different and the variety of people I meet and help makes the profession exciting for me." â&#x20AC;&#x201D; E.G.

Women working in the 80s

A bookstore of their own Mix a love of reading, a background in retail sales and a bookstore for s a l e . . .

Tbe results are the fulfillment of a lifelong dream for Jean Ann Kniplnsky and Pauline Albert — a bookstore of their own.

A 21-year-old friendship has evolved into a business partnership for Pauline Albert and Jean Ann Krupinsky. Both women combined a love of reading, retail selling experience and the life long dream of owning a bookstore when they purchased the Book End recently.

"Both of us enjoy reading and have always wanted to own a bookstore. We had been talking about going into business together before the Book End was for sale," said Jean Ann. "When we heard the store was being sold we quickly bought it. We decided taking over an existing store and changing it to fit our tastes was easier than opening a new store."

For Jean Ann and Pauline the road to buying the Book End was filled with a wide variety of business experiences. "I ran a cheese store for my husband, taught nursery school at the JCC years ago and was 1 a partner in a jewelry business for five years," explained Pauline. "I like being in the retail business especially having my own business. I have a chance to meet lots of interesting people. Owning a bookstore is very challenging."

Jean Ann owned a needlepoint shop for 10 years and gained experience about the book business when she worked for a local bookstore. She also edited the Center Scene for the Jewish Press.

"Everyday is different and challenging in the retail business,".said Jean Ann. "I just couldn't sit in an office to work. One of the great benefits of being in the retail business is meeting people. I made so many good friends when I had my needlepoint shop."

At the Book End the partners hope to achieve a relaxed atmosphere where people can look through the books at an unhurried pace. An inviting sunlit area in the back of the store has a couch and table and chairs that invite a person to sit down while leafing through books. The special children's corner with low shelves and two small chairs beckons boys and girls.

"We really like the children's corner. People come in here with children who go right back to the area and look through the books. The mothers like having the children occupied while they are looking at books," Jean Ann said.

"We are trying to develop a bookstore with a personality. Avid book readers like to browse. We want the Book End to be a relaxed, comfortable place," Pauline added. "Hopefully customers will feel free to stand around and discuss books with each other. The other day a woman came In for books on reincarnation. Listening to her talk was very interesting."

Both Jean Ann and Pauline are avid readers and think that bookstore owners must keep up with the current books. "It's vital for us to read so we can recommend books to the customers. With our full time work schedule it's hard to find the time to read. Fortunately, I am a night person and can stay up late to read," Pauline said.

Pauline prefers non-fiction especially biography and books on England. But she does read a variety of books to stay in touch with what the customers are reading. Jean Ann likes to read mysteries, books on England and work on word games like

crossword puzzles. She is also interested in Jewish topics which are well represented in the store.

"I grew up in Wichita Falls, Texas, which had a very small Jewish population. I didn't have a good Jewish background so as an adult I have had to ,educate myself. „ "No bookstore in Omaha carried a good selection of Jewish books. So we decided to ha ve a ' • good variety of Jewish books. Jane Brooks works for us part time and is helping with the selection.

"There are so many fascinating and wonderful Jewish books including history, biography and novels."

Pauline and Jean Ann have also devoted space in the store to uniquely designed boxed stationery, n • and special order monogrammed gift items. .( They are both experienced In the gift area and* • i think the items are a complimentary addition to the books.

The women want the Book End to be known for its personalized service. They will recommend books for Bar and Bat Mitzvah gifts and keep records so duplicates will not be given.'And, they will special order books if the store does not carry *' what the customer wants. ' [" Jean Ann and Pauline are bombarded daily with information about the hundreds of new books being published. For your reading pleasure as you sit by the pool this summer they can recommend a book to fit your needs whether it be history, biography, fiction or Jewish content. E.G. .,,
