THE HFTH QUESTION

WHY IS THIS GENERATION DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER GENERATIONS BEFORE US? All other generations before us lived in the shadow of the fear of war; we live in the light of the hope for peace. ON THIS R\SSOVER,THE SERVICES GIVEN TO THIS GENERATION TO PERFORM ARE FOUR:

The service of unity

The service of compassion to keep faith with the troubled and neecJful among us in our communities, letting no special circumstance hinder or diminish our capacity to fulfill their lives.

to stand with the people of Israel more firmly than ever before... for this moment when peace bt^gins is both triumph and trial: they bear great and costly burdens. The service of brotherhood to embrace all our brethren from the Soviet Union who courageously free themselves from bondage, and to guide them to new life in the freedom of Israel and the United States.

The service of redemption to bring new life, hope and dignity to all who have felt themselves abandoned in Israel's neighborhoods of distress, . cherishing and embracing the 200,000 Children of Renewal and leading them into a future of gathering brightness.

Meet Nathan Goldberg, 86. He came to Omaha from Russia as a child in 1900 He worked all his life as a grocer. Now. his Wife has died, and his children live in California. Although he worked hard, he has little savings. There is no guarantee, for any of us, ag ainst savings being gone, families being gone, and finding ourselves alone Nathan Goldberg lives at the DR. PHILIP SHER HOME FOR THE AGED, and finds some moments of quiet joy and companionship there Your dollars provide Nathan a $1400 subsidy at the SHER HOME. His children do the best they can, but they can only pay a small amount for their father's care. On days when he feels well enough, Na than travels by van from the Home to the OLDER ADULT PROGRAM, some times at the Jewish Community Center,

sometimes at Beth El Synagogue or Temple Israel, for an excellent, nutritious lunch, a stimulating speaker or film, friendship, cards, or a supervised swim in the pool Your dollars subsidise Nathan's lunch (15,000 meals were served to Older Adults at the JCC last year), and help keep him active and mentally healthy. Nathan and our Older Adults are not a burden. They are not people to be put away some place and forgotten. They are our family part of our heritage of shared joy and suffering. They are part of the oneness of all Jewsour fathers and mothers. Our uncles and aunts. Our brothers and sisters We cherish them now, as they cherished and cared for us. They are our responsibility That is what makes us a Jewish family

Your dollars make good things happen.

Portrait of a Father How your dollars to the Omaha Federation Campaign give Jewish life to Meyer

Meet Meyer Dansky, 86. He came from Poland to Israel in 1945. His wife has died and his sons, Avi and Yoset, died fighting in 1948.

Meyer bright and lively would like to ap many things But there are no facilities and no activities for Tel Hanan's many aging people

Meyer's life is not what he once longed for-a comfortable place to spend his golden years with the grandchildren he used to dream about.

Your dollars, through the Federation's al location to the United Jewish Appeal, will help'to renovate Meyer's apartment and build a community center in Tel Hanan.

He lives in Tel Hanan, near Haifa, one of 160 seriously distressed neighborhoods in Israel. Meyer was told years ago that his poverty situation would get better. But the new comers were too many, too soon Tel Hanan remains a "slum " Meyer is poor not only because he is old and has spent his savings, but also be cause he was a refugee in the years when the new State of Israel was deluged with crises: five wars, soaring inflation, contin ued immigration

Your dollars help to provide Meyer a $500/year health and welfare subsidy, and help pay the $500 cost to supply him with "meals on wheels ' If your father or grandfather had gone to Israel rather than to America, he could be Meyer. Meyer and Israel's beloved elderly are our responsibility. That is what makes us part of a Jewish family.

Your dollars make good things happen. WANTED
