OMAHA - Edward Zorlnsky, mayor of the City of Omaha, will be honored Wednesday, Oct. S, as recipient of the B'nai B'rith Americanism Citatkm (or Meritorious Service.' Announcement of Mayor Zorinsky's selection as lt7S honoree was made by Joseph Erman, president of Henry Monsky Lodge No, 354, which annually presents the award. Presentatton will be made during a noon luncheon in the Hilton Hotel Ballroom. The hmcheon and ceremonies are open to all men and women, non-members as wi^ as members of B'nai B'rith. Tickets are 16 per person. Zorinsky, who became mayor of On\aha in 1973, is being honored for his servkx both to his community and his country. As mayor, he has led the city through two natural disasten this year - a blizzard In January and a tornado in May. In day-to-dav governmental txisiness, he has prevented tax increases thnxuib three taxable pertods, has expressed firm belief In the city's youth and also sought benefits for the city's ekieriy in the form of 10oent bus rides and tow real estate taxes. The United States Conference of Mayors recognized Zorlnsky by selecting him to represent the State Department on a European goodwill tour and alto as a member of the U.S. Mayors Economic Devek>proent Committee. Prior to becoming mayor, Zorinsky was appointed to the Nebraska Judicial Qualltlcatkms Commisshm and was elected to the Omaha Public Power District board of directors, both in 1968. While working as an executive in the family-owned tobacco wholesaling business, he was made president of the Nebraska Asaociation of Tobacco Distributors. In 1966 he was named the outstanding U.S. busineu executive in the industry. Bom in Omaha on Nov. 11, 1928. Ed Zorlnsky padu^ed from Central High School, attended the University of Minnesota and Creighton University, receiving his bachek>r's degree In chemistry and zoology from the University of Nebraska. business in graduate schools at Harvard and Notre Danje. He served as an officer In the U.S. Army Military Police Corps and put in another 14 years In the reserves, being honorably discharged In 1952 at the rank of captain. Zorlnsky. who is the 24th recipient Q( the Americanism Otatkm since its inceptkm in 19S2, is only the fourth Jewish person to be so honored. The others were Morris E. Jacob* in 1963, Harry Trustin In 1965 and Samuel Greenberginl974. He is the second Jewish mayor of Omaha. Johnny Rosenblatt was mayor from 1964 to 1961.
