Israel freezes' Ceylon Programs

The Foreign Ministry statement announcing the suspension said it,was t a k e n with "regret." However, in a case where the country suspends diplomatic relations, Israel has no alternative. The statement noted that Israel did not react'when Ceylon took positions unfriendly to Israel in the past but these had always stopped short of breaking diplomatic relations.
Campaign History The first Philanthropies Campaign was held in Omaha in 1930. Under the chairmanship of Sam Beber, that initial effort resulted in campaign gifts totalling $43,823. In 1948, the year Israel was established, the campaign, under the chairmanship of Harry Trustin, reached an all-time high of $750,000. In 1967, the year of the 6 Day War, campaign gifts under the co • chairmanship of Maurice Gilmore and Harvey Ferer, totalled $973,265. The 1970 campaign now holds the _.r. e c o r d _ for the_largest amount raised in the 40. years of Omaha campaign history.

Senator William Folbright, a consistent critic of Israeli policies, surprised nobody by not adding his name. But perhaps more interesting than the non-signers were the first-time signers; those Senators who had previously not associated themselves with the two important round-robins of Congressional support for Israel endorsed over the last 12 months. The first-timers were Howard Baker (Rep. Tenn.), Jennings Randolph (Dem. W.V.), John Stennis (Dem. Miss.), Robert Packwood (Rep. Oregon), Roman Hruska (Rep. Nebraska), Herman Talmadge (Dem. Ga.) and Richard Russell (Dem. Ga.) who did not actually sign the original letter but associated himself with i n n a separate one to Seeretary Rogers. The unprecedented range of support from the conservative side of the Senate is due to a number of reasons. First there is the acknowledged threat to American interests from a Communist power which has aroused the traditional antiComunists. Second, some of these Senators are concerned that the Soviets might misinterpret the 'divisions hi the Sen-
ate over Indochina as a sigh of national weakness and wanted to make the letter as bi-partisan as possible. But a'third reason which has more to do with the internal politics of the Senate than foreign policy must also be considered as a partial explanation. Des Moines—A g r o u p of young couples from the Young Leadership G r o u p of the Jewish Welfare Federation will participate in a retreat to Clear Lake, Iowa, this weekend. Rabbi Paul Levenscn and Mrs. Levinson from Kansas City, Mo., will be guests. Rabbi Levenson will conduct a discussion Saturday evening. The group will talk about this year's accomplishments • and about goals for the coming year.
Letters Wanted Des Moines—The Community Relations Commission of the Jewish Welfare Federation is urging the community to commend the two Iowa senators for their stand in favor of requesting that the federal government sell jet aircraft to Israel. A letter is being sent to the Jewish community asking them to respond to this stand by writing to Senator Jack Miller and S e n a t o r Harold Hughes. ,

SOfh Anniversary for Pruces Des Moines—Mr. and Mrs. Abe Pruce, 14C6 Twenty-sixth St., will observe their golden wedding anniversary June 27. They will be honored by Beth El Jacob Sisterhood at a reception from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 23, at the Synagogue. The entire community is invited. Both Mr. and Mrs. Pruce were born in Lithuania and were slightly acquainted as children. Both came to the -United-States, he to Baltimore^ Md., and she to West Des Moines. In 1916 Mr. P r u c e came to Des Moines to visit a brother. After serving in World War I he returned to West Des Moines to open a tailor shop. He and his future w i f e renewed acquaintance and were married in 1920. Mr. Pruce operated a grocery store in Des Moines for many years.
Their son, Sidney, was killed during World World War II. Mr. arid Mrs. Pruce have given a library room in his meiaory to their synagogue. They also have dedicated a classroom in the synagogue and curtains for the altaf in his memory.
