Golda's Welcome at the By TRUDE B. FELDMAN Jewish Press While House Correspondent The last time a Middle East "queen" caused such a stir was when Cleopatra came down the Nile. This was the feeling and the reaction in the nation's capital last week about Prime Minister Golda Meir's stale visit. Mrs. Meir impressed President Nixon with her fortitude - and dynamism; captured t h i s city's most sophisticated audience—the National Press Club—with her resoluteness and directness, and charmed the Washington and Baltimore Jewish communities with her friendliness and humility. For some brief moments it was almost possible to forgej the tension in the Mideast — so warm and 'heimishe' was the atmosphere sur-jounding her visit. * The 71-year-old Mrs. Meir, mother of two

and~a grandmother to five, was greeted at the South Lawn of the White House by President and Mrs. Nixon with a hearty 'Shalom' and presented with a bouquet of red roses. Three hundred privileged onlookers waved miniature Israeli and American flags as the band played both Hatikvah (Israel's National Anthem) and The Star Spangled Banner. A 19-gun salute was fired simultaneously with the music. Mrs. Meir was accorded full Armed Forces honor. Wearing a beige suit, she looked very regal alongside President Nixon as the two leaders, inspected the Honor Guard. With cordiality in his various r e m a r k s , President Nteon not only displayed warm feelings for the Russian-born, American-bred Golda Meir, but also for the whole nation of Israel which she now leads. Pomp and ceremony concluded, the President escorted Mrs. Meir to his newly-decorated Oval

office where the two conferred privately for almost two hours. The remainder of Mrs. Meir's first day in Washington included a luncheon given by Secretary of State William Rogers, Mr. Rogers told Mrs. Meir that in America, people are wondering when a woman would become President of the USA, adding that he heard in Israel, it's the opposite—they wonder when they'll have a man as Premier! State Dinner That evening, the President and Mrs. Nixon tendered a state dinner at the White House in Golda. Meir's honor—a dinner that will be remembered for a long time. It was a dignified, yet 'frelUcha' affair. Only 129 guests were selected to dine with the President and the Prime Minister. One hundred1 (Continued on Page 2)

Israeli Soldiers Get Food on Yosn Kippur Jerusalem (ZINS)—The military rabbinate ruled that frontline soldiers could eat on Vom Kippur. ..-.'. Their decision was based on the traditional halachic concept of pikuach nefesh (safeguarding life) in that-the front-line soldier is engaged in a sacred task of preserving life and the imposition of a fast could jeopardize the fulfillment of that duty.
