At tin- beginning of the New Ycyr, it is timely to restate the purpose of our Jewish Federation. The fundamental concepts of the j'ederatioi) is well expressed by the ringing words of our prophet Jeremiah to "seek the welfare of the community in which you live . . . lor in its welfare shall be your peace." The Jewish Federation of Omaha has continued to work in the three areas ol chief concern to the Jewish community. It has carried on its purpose of strengthening , . . our J e w i s h community life through its mnnyfold local activities, designed to serve members of our community. Secondly, it has again demonstrated its deep and abiding interest in the welfare of our f e 11 o w-J e w s throughout the world, jind the people of Israel in its most critical and serious moment: and thirdly, it has become involved and is participating in the efforts to solve the MJcia] problems and the urban blight that afflict our cities. Locnlly, our objective of many years has been finally achieved. We have at last succeeded in obtaining a site for our new Jewisii Community Center buiklin.:,', a 10.7 acre are:), located at With and Western Avenue. Plans are now being made to proceed with a building proHarry Sklnum gram. At Camp Newman, an important structure was completed this year. This is the Kalah Franklin Memorial Chapel, which will serve our campers and offer them an opportunity for services and icligious experience. The Annual Campaign for the Jewish Philanthropies and Israel Emergency Fund was ably conducted under the general chairmanship of Dan Kalzman, and the Women's Division chairman, Mrs. Xeo Eisenstatt. The campaign is now in its final stage and .strenuous eflorts are being made to reach every prospect. It is my hope that in the Year 572!l. our Jewish Federation will continue its earnest activities to "seek the welfare" of the community in which we live; to strengthen our Jewish community life; to continue effectively our participation in the collective efforts to tolve the urban crisis to assure equality, dignity and freedom for nil Americans; and to heighten our interest and concern in the welfare of world Jewry, and in the existence and progress of the State of Israel. On behalf of the officers, hoard members and staff of the Jewish Federation and its departments, I extend best wishes to the members of our community for the New Year. May this be a Year of Blessings of health, of happiness, and above all a Year of Peace throughout the world. Harry Sldnian, President Jewish Federation of Omaha
