Slegal is the Colorado chairman of the Society of Jewish Americanists, one of the Society's fronts designed to convey the impression of having strong Jewish support. Aiiii-Srmilism • Welch, a retired candy manufacturer, touched on the topic of anti-semitism early in his address. He said that the Communists have hired "dupes" to peddle the information that we're Bnti-semitic. In this way, the Communists cause agitation, divide and conquer, and accomplish their goals, "'i'tie J o h n Birch Society is in no way antisemitic." Birch declared that all of the anti-semitism of the IOth- century and of the Hitler era was caused by the Communists.

In fact, ho attributed every war during the past two centuries to the work of a mysterious, secret group of "Insiders," who control the Communists. He said these "Insiders" have directly or indirectly caused tho French Revolution, revolutions in-Europe, both world wars, the Korean war and the war in Viet Nam. Welch couldn't name any of these "Insiders" but was confident the John Birch Society can make them crumble in a few more y e a r s by exposing thc-rn. "Russia prolonged our . war with Japan by controlling Washington. Japan tried to surrender to the U. S. months before tho explosion of the atom bomb over Hiroshima and Nagasaki." Welch didn't disclose the source of this information. He lore into the "Communist conspiracy" and drew loud applause when he said the present civil rights movement is planned by Communists and utilized by Communists. The Birch boss said, "The Society has seven or eight Negro Americans working in our cause." "We have thousands of 'front' groups in the U. S. These are not deceptive groups because they promote the 'noble purpose of our society.'" Welch received a standing ovation at the beginning and end of his speech, and nftor a question-andanswer period. • • ' • . • » .
