In the spirit of reverence hailing the high holy days the 1963-5724 special edition of the Jewish Press selected "Women of the Bible" as its theme, according to annual tradition. Heroism and Faith Tribute is paid to the wonderful, valorous mothers, sisters and daughters among the Jews of biblical times whose legends involving heroism and faith in the ways of their people, are acclaimed to this day. Jewish literature from biblical times to the present, has emphasized the value and importance of great women. The lifelong history of the Jewish people show the same respect for the matriarchs as the patriarchs, and arc sur-

rounded by a halo of beauty, virtue, and wisdom. Place of Mother The mother in Jewish tradition is regarded as laying the foundation of the children's character, on which -the father builds. At this time of the year, as well as during other holidays, it is the woman of the home, who by her own participation in preparing for the s a c r e d occasions, teaches her children to revere and acquire an insight in the beliefs of their people. Generations Inspired The wisdom and faith of the women in the bible portrayed in the pages of this edition, have been an inspiration to all following generations.

There is Deborah, a judge in Israel, when women in other lands were slaves. On another page, you will meet Miriam, who stood by the side' of her brother, Moses, the redeemer of Israel from slavery in Egypt. There is the story of Ruth whose fidelity to her mother-in-law, is one of the most moving dramas in the bible. Also, to this day, Ruth is honored as the ancestress of the great King David. The experiences of Esther, wife of the Persian king, Ahasuerus, who saved the Jewish refugees in that country, and the drama of Rebekah, one of the matriarchs, are only a few of the dramatic heroines of their day portrayed here., •'

Brussels (JTA) — An International Committee for a Dachau Monument has been formed here under the presidency of Arthur Haulot, Belgian High Commissioner for Tourism and former President of the International Committee to develop the project. The monument will be designed to remind humanity of the degradation and d e a t h s xnete.d out by the Nazis. This monument is scheduled to be inaugurated April 29, 19G5, the twentieth anniversary of .the liberation of the camp. • The first committee decided last year at a meeting in Luxembourg to erect an international memorial at the site of the death camp, .the Nazi occupation. Also, the .Warsaw City Council has instructed a group of municipal architects to "prepare plans for a monument to ba erected on the site of the ancient Jewish cemetery in tho suburb of Praga. The cemetery had been completely demolished and leveled by the Nazis.

By Arthur II.. Goldstein President of the Jewish Federation of Omaha The unique and characteristic nature of our Jewish Federation of Omaha, is that through it swidespread programs and activities it serves the entire Jewish community. Throughout 60 years or existence, the Federation has been a symbol of cooperation and solidarity in our community. In Community Whether it be activities for the young and old, care for the aged, programs for individual welfare, camping, Jewish education or Jewish library activities, all thes0 functions are performed by the Federation for the community. Combine Forces And in unison with organized Jewish groups in Omaha, we consolidate our forces in our annual United Jewish Campaign, the Jewish Philanthropies, to provide Omaha's share for local, national, overseas, and Israel needs. There are many more avenues for joint programming which enable the Federation to maintain the tradition and reputation of a "Jewish Community Geared for Service." We are therefore, proud of the community harmony and unity sustained in Omaha. Young Adults Interested The lay leadership on our many committees and boards are proof that the Federation is the concern of many persons. We are especially proud of our young adults who are sharing in our community work with remarkable skill, and are preparing for community leadership, by' being participants in community labors. We hope that in the years to come, the Jewish Federation may grow from strength to strength and that our common heritage for community living—the Jewish Federation — shall continue to function on a most productive level for the benefit of us all. As we enter a New Year, I would like to extend to the members of our community, on behalf of the Jewish Federation boards and Committees, our very best wishes for a happy New Year. May it be a Year of. Joy, Satisfaction, Health and Universal Peace. 1903 5724 JEWISH CALENDAR Rosh Haslianah .. .Sept. 19-20 Yom Kippur '.. .Sept. 28 Sukkot Oct. 3-9 Shimini Atzerct Oct. 10 Simhat Torah Oct. 11 Ilanukkah Dec. 11-18 All observances begin m the eve of the holiday.
