Canar And Lippett Will Co-Chairmen Men's Div. Louis Canar and Ruben I.lppett will be co-chairmen of the Men's Division of the Jewish Philanthropic* Campaign, Arthur H. Coldstein, G e n e r a l Campaign chairman announced today. "I am very happy to report that Louis Canar and Ruben Lippett have accepted the leadership of our Men's Division. This ii a campaign unit which has the responsibility for covering a large number of prospects, which calls for capable and devoted leadership. : . Hungarians Fined For Threats Stockholm (JTA)—One recent Hungarian refuge* to Sweden drew • 30-day sentence thla week-end and a second a fina for calling their Swedish teacher a "Jewish swine" and threatening to kill him. A third defendant waa acquitted. In court, th* defendant* openly admitted that they were Fascist* and anti-Semite*. The court's findings, however, were officially based on threat* against a public servant. Many Distinctions Besides enjoying the distinction of being the first member of the Jewish faith ever to hold that high office in the Irish capital, Mr, Briscoe Is regarded uniquely as a successful revolutionist, statesman and businessman. Born in,Publin 62 years ago, he became a'revolutlonlst at 16 when he Joined the Irish Republican Army for an exciting career as a staff officer to Gen. Michael Collins, flamboyant leader of the IRA. His dudes consisted chiefly of smuggling guns into Ireland to stock the underground army'* hidden armories. Elected to Ball Mr. Briscoe became a supporter of Eamon de Valera in 1917 when the Irish leader headed the Sinn Fein, the militant nationalist organization, after hi* service In the outlawed IltA. In 1919, the two men, traveling as seamen, went to New York to raise money for th* IRA. Later, they appeared before the U. S. Senate to plead for recognition of Ireland's cause. When de Valera founded the Flanna Fail Party In 1926, Mr. Brlscoc became a founding member. The following year he was elected to the Dall (Ireland's Parliment) from south Dublin, a seat he has held ever since. Tireless Speaker Another cause close to his heart has been Israel's struggle, first to establish her Independence and now to safeguard her security and freedom. He has been a tireless speaker and has helped to raise funds for the people of Israel in the British Isles and the United States. After World War II he doVoted a good deal of his time to helping refugees and for a timo supported a number of Jewish children until they were placed with families. Started As Engineer As a businessman. Mr. Briscoe .started out as an electrical engineer; but in later years became associated as a director with several firms, Including textile and pharmaceutical companies and a packing house producing Kosher meat for the domestic,and export markets, lie Is nn observant Jew and has been instrumental in instituting Kashrut laws throughout Ireland.
