Red Cross Needs Women to Assist •The Omaha Chapter of the American Red Cross is again in urgent need of women to assist in its war relief activities.

These activities include knitting, sewing, and bandage rolling. Knitting may be taken home. Sewing and bandage rolling is done at the Red Cross rooms in the Omaha Building and Loan Association building.

Women interested in helping are asked to report at the Red Cross rooms^ where they will be furnished with the necessary materials.

With the secocd summer of Camp Jay-C-C almost half over and 80 campers happily engaged in outdoor activities, a great many interesting and beautiful traditions are already emerging to round out the camp program.

Ceremony and tradition eontribute much to the beauty of camp life, much of which centers about the council fire at the close of the week, when campers receive their banners with activity emblems. The council fire, therefore, lends itself to ceremonials with torchlight and special songs.

Last Saturday evening, when the first banner campflre was held, the following special Council Fire Song was introduced to the campers, sung to the tune of "Anchors Aweigh:" To our council flre we come Singing our song.

The universal traditions of all camp fires are observed also at Camp Jay-C-C with appropriate solemnity and interest. Among them are: Letting the flre die out naturally; walking around rather than across the site of the council flre; never talk|ng around the council ring except when necessary; signifying pleasure or approval by shouting "how" in Indian fashion rather than by applause.

Already traditional at the JayC-C campflre is a bit of starlore and the singing of taps in cabin groups. Other traditions will undoubtedly grow out of the experiences of Jay-C's in the years to come.

Right My columnar colleague, Al Segal, recently wrote a lovely piece about a visit to the New York World's Fair during which he looked into the Italian pavilion, saw something he liked, and after a bit of hjsart searching, bought it.

Mr. Segal wasn't Quite sure whether he'd done the right thing.

As might have been expected, a week after his column appeared, there was a* reader's letter ia one of the Anglo-Jewish papers telling him he'd done wrong.

It isn't my intention to enter into the debate, but the column, and the answer touched off some reminiscences of my own, about my brief stopover in Italy on the "way home from Palestine.

At the outset, I might as well make axlean breast of it and conlesB that I bought things in Italy, and' if I'd had more money to epare, I'd probably bate bought tribre. C l a i r e and I wandered .around Naples all of one pleasant day and had a swell time jostling through the lively, brisk crowds, eating some kind of marvelous pastry hot off the charcoal at a crowded, jolly, bustling pastry and wine bar on their main street — the Via Twenty-seventh of November or Via Thirty-First of February or something like that .«— where every man, woman and child in Naples, rich and poor, seems to drop in for a snack. And we went to Barra's glove shop where a fat, pretty Italian miss •who talked pure 14th St.-andThird Ave.-Amerlcan sold us more than we could afford of the finest gloves in the world.

Afternoon in Pisa We spent another happy afternoon in Pisa where, across the street from the Leaning Tower, -we rummaged for hours in an vast alabaster-ware shop whoso maze pf connecting rooms were cramimed from floor to ceiling with reome of the m o s t tasteful and .beautiful and some of the most garish and vulgar pieces of craftsmanship I have ever seen. ; And in Genoa we had the pleafiantest time of all. We danced in a pleasant night club where everybody, including the young couples and the tired business men taking a fling with their secretaries, and the officers wearing a rainbow assortment of uniforms,: and the first-class band, was much mofe c h u m m y and Jolly than the crowd you are likely to find in any Netf York night spot; We spent an hour in a Genoese 6 and 10, emerging with an armful of cheap, bright pretty Italian potterwhich cost as an aggregate of about a dollar and a quarter.

After we had taken the boys to jlsit Columbus's little birthplace — rather a disappointment beeauso it was closed and dilapidated-looking, as if the-Genoese did toot bother much about this shrine of their city's most-famous son,— -wo wandered back into the labyfinth of the old city, and found Ourselves in an old-world market -which didn't differ, except -in the costumes of the people, from the Arab bazars of the Near East.

Then we emerged into the modern city with its dressy shops with broad, shining plate glass -windows and its crowds of g o o dlooking men and women. T'iie people of Genoa are Piedmontese — northern Italians — and a handsome, alert crowd. Nine out of ten of the •women were wearing stylish fur coats and all of them wore stylish hats and shoes and dreses. Claire couldn't rest until she found out how the women maix&ged to dress so well.

"You don't see nine out of ten women on Fifth. Avenue wearing ur coats," she said. "I refuse to believe that people are more prosperous under Mussolini than in America."

We nearly missed our boat, but he solved the mystery. Visits to a couple of department stores repealed that the f u r coats were made of rabbit "skins, botchily,

And it is in this, perhaps, that the secret may be found, of why nobody hates the Italians as they do the Germans, w h y even we Jews for the most part, can't find it in us to hate the Italians, for all the Italian racial propaganda which is a sniveling imitation of the Nazi propaganda.

The reason is, simply, that the Italians aren't a hateful people.

And their government may be as totalitarian and brutal a set of gangsters as the Nazis, but it can't conceal the fact that t h e Italians are a deeply civilized and humane 4 nation. That, in itself, perhaps, is almost equivalent to saying they are essentially a democratic nation.

I know, the Italians are fighting now on the side of everything that ls'benighted and barbaric. I know that they a r e potentially powerful enemies of this country, and that tbe time might conceivably come when a lot of us, including myself, will; have to go out and try to kill as many Italians as we can, in order to defend our democracy and civilization.

But it's difficult to believe that the Italians can stay for any very long time—as history goes—on the wrong side.. I think that is why I—and probably it is why Al Segal—was able to buy Italian goods when the thought of buying anything German at this time makes me feel nauseous.
