Of all the nonsense that has ever been said or written, the twaddle of sham-patriots who lay claim to one hundred percent Americanism is the-most disgusting. For,, t^e claim is not only absurd, it is vicious. Jt is an attempt to gain an unfair advantage for oneself at the expanse of others. It is invariably an effort to cover up ill-will; prejudice, bigotry and reactionism under the cloak and cover of one' hun<Jre4 percent Americanism, In many instances, it is even worse than that, In many instances, it is an attempt to hide criminal conduct under ho.od and mask. In an address recently, Professor Henry Gildings, the head of the department of" Sociology at the Columbia University and an internationally reeognized authority on the subject he teaches, made the following analysis of the boastful claim of one hundred percent • Americanism: • • "I am not a hundred percent American because I am too modest. , To be a hundred percent American would be to stand for one of the biggest and greatest things in the world to-day. "I know of nothing that is sq wrought with destiny as Amerr ica. I know of nothing upon which the hopes of the world are based today, as America.., Europe, wrecked and sore, is looking to America. Asia, Africa-and the Islands of the sea are also looking to America to fill with hopes the hearts of those lives which have been shattered. ''To be a hundred percent American, I should have to be better man than I ajn. I would have to be more intelligent than I am- I would be obliged to know what a hundred percent American is. "Nobody is a hundred percent American. Nobody is hundred percent any thing. Why, we don't even have hundred percent fools. My definition of a hundred percent American, if "such a person should ejpst, would b ea man or woman who makes hundred percent good in making America 3 better America- Their religion, who their- forefathers were, or what language they formerly spoke wouldn't enter into it. They might be anybody/ but they would have to fulfill .the definition." Falling under the category of material relief is the work of the Old People's. Home. Here during the year there have lived a number of old folks, men and women. The maximum number in the home was 11, the. minimum seven. During the past summer extensive and repairs were made in the building and in the bath-house adjoining it, which have added materially to the comfort and utility of both structures.' These repairs were financed through loans on the property, secured by mortgages. Ag is the case'with all the persons aided through the Federation, every effort is made to insure peace and happiness to the old people who are spending their last years on earth in the ishelter'of this institution. Important elements in the Federation's program are the two Talmud Torahs of the city, one at Twentyfirst and Burt streets, the other at Twenty-fifth and J streets, on the South Side.
