A Bulwark of Ancient J In Midst of a Changing City In the heart of the ever-changing, swiftly moving city there is an institution that for nearly, three quarters of a century has remained unchanged. While all about it—on the busy East Side, the men and women have been shedding their old world garments and habits, and modeling themselves after the*.custom of the new world, the building known as the Beth Hamedrash Hagodol has sheltered customs and traditions that are as old as the oldest prayer. • Thrice, it has followed the trend of modern invention, in the matter of building and sanitary improvement, but in its work the Beth Hamedrash Hagodol of 64 Norfolk Street has through three quarters of a changeful century housed and fostered traditional Judaism—unabridged, unchanged, unaltered by so much as the curtailment of a. single prayer. Through its 70 years of existence it witnessed the rise of reform Judaism and the building of great temples. But nevertheless it has remained the picturesque bulwark of YO 1 ^ 1 0 0 ^ Judaism-—an oasis of friendliness to the immigrant in a desert of strangeness. _ ' .. • .:""

ism has as its chief tenets—Pray to God, Study . of the Talmud and Torah, and Help lite Poor. In this last, too, the Beth Hamedrash Hagodol is not deficient. It has distributed $250,000 in individual charity. It aids destitute Hebrew teachers and distributes food to the poor.
