Deputies clash over Patel invite A furious online row has broken out over the Board of Deputies’ announcement that it is holding a discussion with Home Secretary Priti Patel next week, , writes Jenni Frazer. She will be in conversation with the Board’s chief executive, the former Labour MP Gillian Merron. Critics and supporters – including deputies – clashed on Twitter regarding the invitation to Patel. One deputy, Tal Ofer, said the invite “brings the Board into disrepute. Cancel it!” Another deputy, Amos Schonfield, asked: “Why is a politician that has made comments about the ‘north London metropolitan liberal elite’, and who is overseeing a dangerous, racist, protrafficker refugee policy

NEW ISRAELI ENVOY IS EXPECTED NEXT MONTH Israel’s designated new ambassador to the UK, Tsipi Hotovely, is now unlikely to arrive in London until after the High Holy Days, according to an Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, writes Jenni Frazer. Hotovely’s appointment as envoy was approved by the Israeli government in August, but now has to go through a standard bureaucratic process of ratification at the British end, which normally takes between six to eight weeks. Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Lior Hayat said mat-

ters were proceeding normally and that Hotovely had said she would arrive in London “after the chagim” – which is likely to mean after Succot, which this year is in mid-October. However, Hotovely has made one virtual appearance in London already – at a memorial Zoom event last Sunday held by the London School of Jewish Studies. The event was held to mark 30 days since the death of Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz and Hotovely, as one of his many former students, took part to pay tribute to him.

UK concern over demolition Middle East Minister James Cleverly has said the government was “concerned” by reports that Israeli authorities had demolished a Covid-19 drive-through testing centre in the West Bank city of Hebron. He made the comments in response to a question in the House of Commons from SDLP parliamentarian Colum Eastwood. It was the latest tabled by an MP on

reports of Israeli hindrance of Palestinian efforts to stop the virus’s spread. “We are concerned by the reports of a recent demolition of a Covid-19 testing centre in Hebron,” said Cleverly. “We have not to date made representations on this particular case, but we have repeatedly made clear to the Israeli authorities our view that demolitions, in all but the most

exceptional circumstances, are contrary to international humanitarian law.” Humanitarian agencies are worried about Covid-19 spreading through denselypopulated Palestinian refugee camps such as in Gaza, while in the West Bank, where there are now almost 10,000 active cases, the Palestinian Authority has announced a staggered return for schools.

Extinction Rebellion Jews join in protests Jewish Extinction Rebellion activists joined daily protests outside Parliament this week urging MPs to discuss climate change legislation, writes Joy Faulk. Holding signs quoting Jewish sage Hillel and wearing kippot with the XR logo on, around 25 demonstrators took part in events that included a vigil, prayer sessions, discussions and a march. A series of online talks attended by about 75 people were also held by Extinction Rebellion Jews (XRJ), including on Jews and civil disobedience with Rabbi Roni Tabick. Events will conclude on Saturday with Havdallah and Selichot prayers. An XRJ volunteer said protests “were successful in reminding both the government, MPs and the general public that the climate and ecological emergency is not going away until we take drastic action to avert the severity”. The volunteer added:

We have been praying all week for a sweeter year ahead.”

Asked whether it supported the protest, XR Jews said it was “not involved in this action, but agree the media has a key role to play in influencing the general public as well as politicians.” It added: “When the press does not treat the breakdown of our climate as an emergency we all suffer.”

Serbia and Kosovo head for Jerusalem Serbia is to move its Israel embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, while Balkan neighbour Kosovo is extending diplomatic recognition of Israel in a double boost brokered by the White House, writes Adam Decker. Kosovo, a Muslim majority nation formed from war and still fighting to legitimise its independence, also said it would establish its embassy in Jerusalem, despite the east of the city being claimed by Palestinians as their capital. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said: “I thank my friend the president of Serbia for the decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and to transfer his embassy there.” The move is set to go ahead by July 2021. In 2017, the United States said it would be moving its Israeli embassy to Jerusalem, which caused an international outcry. Several small economically-dependent states have since followed suit, but until Serbia’s announcement no Euro-

PM meets Kushner to discuss UAE deal Boris Johnson and Dominic Raab have met Donald Trump’s senior adviser Jared Kushner to discuss developments in the Middle East. The trio said they welcomed “the historic normalisation deal” between Israel and the United Arab Emirates which Kushner, who is just back from the region, helped to facilitate. They also discussed “wider US efforts to facilitate the normalisation of ties between Israel and Arab states”. Raab updated Kushner on his recent visit to Israel and the West Bank, with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office noting “his encouragement of a return to cooperation between the Israeli and Palestinian leaderships, as a first step on the road to a renewed Israeli-Palestinian peace process”. The government said Johnson and Raab had been “clear about their

commitment to a negotiated twostate solution”. Meanwhile, the leaders of Hamas and Hezbollah have met to discuss their response to the diplomatic détente. SAUDIS TAKE A STEP BACK Saudi Arabia has thrown cold water on the hope it will follow the UAE’s lead and normalise ties with Israel. King Salman bin Abdulaziz said this week his country would not pursue such a deal until there is peace between

Israel and the Palestinians. The king told Donald Trump in a phone call his kingdom would like to see a peace treaty based on the Arab Peace Initiative, which was proposed by Saudi Arabia in 2002.

JFS warning over TikTok

JFS has issued a warning to parents after a graphic video showing a man committing suicide was circulated on social media. The video, which was reportedly livestreamed on Facebook before making its way to social media app Tik Tok, has since been removed from the platform. The school’s deputy headteacher, Rabbi Howard Cohen, warned parents and carers that the content could still be accessed by students. In an email, he wrote: “We have been made aware of a video being shared on social media platforms, which originated on the mobile phone app TikTok. The video is of a man committing suicide. Although we understand it has been removed from TikTok, the video is still being shared and we are concerned that your child may receive and watch it.”

CST, JLC and Board meet Facebook over online hate Representatives from four communal organisations have taken part in a high-level consultation meeting with senior policy officials from Facebook, including the social media giant’s vice-president, Nicola Mendelsohn (pictured). The meeting, between the Board of Deputies, the Jewish Leadership Council, the Community Security Trust and the Antisemitism Policy Trust was private and no statements have been released by either side as to the talks. However, Jewish News understands the meeting was called in the

aftermath of heightened communal concerns about failures on both Facebook, Twitter and Instagram in the wake of the row over grime music artist Wiley. His repeated rants against Jews eventually led to him being banned from all social media platforms, although not before a huge number of people had staged a 48-hour “walkout” from Twitter, where Wiley’s attacks began. The government is proposing an Online Harms Bill, whose implications were discussed. Last month, Facebook announced it was adding

such antisemitic tropes as “Jews run the world” or “Jews control the media” to its list of “harmful stereotypes” that would be banned from posts.

PALESTINIAN FLAG ON SCHOOL ROOF

South Ayrshire Council, the municipality close to Glasgow, has said it is “reviewing external access” to one of the biggest schools in the area after a Palestinian flag was put up on the school’s roof following the IsraelScotland match last week. Passers-by on Saturday saw the flag flying from the rooftop of the landmark Ayr Grammar Primary

School, formerly Ayr Academy. The flag was removed on the same day. South Ayrshire Council said it had established that access to the roof was not gained from inside the school — meaning there was no security breach to the building. However, a spokesman said it wasreviewinghowthosewhoputup

the flag had climbed to the roof of the school. Police Scotland said: “Around 1pm on Saturday, 5 September 2020, police were made aware that a flag had been erected on the roof of a school in Ayr. “No criminality has been established and, following liaison with the local authority, no further police action is required.”

JEWDAS SUSPENDED BY FACEBOOK Radical Jewish collective Jewdas has had its Facebook account suspended after posting phrases and asking readers to guess whether they were said by father of Zionism Theodore Herzl or Adolf Hitler. Jewdas, which continued its sardonic messaging on other social media platforms, posted a note from the tech giant saying its account had been shut down for 30 days for violating Facebook’s community standards. It was founded in 2006 as a “gratuitously Jewish” group.

GENESIS PLEDGES SUPPORT FOR JW3 A Jewish philanthropic foundation has said it will double the first £100,000 donated to London’s Jewish cultural centre, JW3, in its ‘Big Night In’ fundraiser tonight (Thursday.) Genesis Philanthropy Group, already a big supporter of the institution, said it would help JW3 weather the financial storm caused by the pandemic in recognition of its importance to Jewish life. Chief executive Raymond Simonson described it as “a critical event” for JW3’s future.

For some this year, Rosh Hashanah is cancelled Families face spending the Jewish new year apart after the government announced a ban on social gatherings of more than six people, writes Francine Wolfisz. Rolling back the recent easing of lockdown, Boris Johnson yesterday told the nation that from Monday it will become illegal to assemble in groups of seven or more anywhere in England, whether indoors or out, in an effort to halt a second wave of coronavirus. Prior to the announcement, groups of up to 30 people were legally allowed to gather, as were two households, but any assemblies of seven or more could now be subject to fines of £100 or even arrest. For Jewish communities across England, the new restrictions – which are expected to last for months – are set to scupper celebrations for Rosh Hashanah or the end of the Yom Kippur fast with extended family and friends. Synagogues are permitted to hold greater numbers, but there is a restriction on people gathering in groups larger than six within these

venues or mixing socially. Weddings and funerals can, however, still go ahead with groups of up to 30 people. Ahead of the High Holy Days, the United Synagogue (US) has requested congregants to pre-book services, which are still expected to take place, although further discussion may yet be needed on the impact of these latest restrictions, including blowing the shofar for congregants. Richard Verber, director of communications at the US, said: “We know for many of our members the centuries-old evocative services of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are a highlight of the Jewish year. “We were pleased to receive confirmation from the government that services can take place in our synagogues in a Covid-secure way. We know there are many factors for our communities to consider as they reassess their careful and detailed plans in the coming days in light of the prime minister’s announcement. Protecting our members’ health remains paramount. “In addition to security concerns, this year more than ever we will be asking our members not to socialise

before or after the services and to make their way to and from shul in a socially distanced way.” Meanwhile, both Reform Judaism and Liberal Judaism have announced all services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur will only take place online, as they have since lockdown began in March. The Charity Commission has launched an enhanced version of its public register

The Charity Commission has launched an improved public register of charities that lets people see how many employees are on salaries of more than £60,000, writes Adam Decker. Regulators said it would help to “widen the public’s window” into how charities are run, as well as help donors decide where to give. The register – at www.gov. uk/checkcharity – shows how many staff within a charity receive total income packages of more than £60,000, and whether trustees, who are usually volunteers, are paid for

their services to the charity. It also highlights income charities receive from government grants and contracts. The new display is also designed to help trustees access and update their charity’s information with the Commission, and new data download functions help sector professionals better analyse information about the charity sector as a whole, including trends and developments in the size and make-up of the sector. The new tool also allows potential supporters – donors, grant makers, or those thinking of setting up a new charity – to search for charities in their area, or to identify charities that promote a certain cause. “Decisions about charitable donations are often very personal, influenced by our own life experiences, and those of our friends and family,” said Helen Stephenson, who is the Charity Commission’s chief executive. “But we know most people share an expectation of openness and transparency from all charities. That’s why our new online register increases the range of information available at the click of a button.”

A member of Nottingham Liberal Synagogue (NLS) has been elected as Fellow of the British Academy. Professor Mike Billig is a former professor of social sciences at Loughborough University, working in contemporary social psychology. He has authored numerous books and articles and is acclaimed across academia for developing new forms of social psychology that are closely linked with other social sciences and especially with the study of language.

The new information about high pay is drawn from data submitted by the charities themselves, in their annual returns to the Commission, so top salary brackets at some of the community’s biggest charities are now viewable by all. At UJIA, whose chief executive is Mandie Winston, eight employees earn more than £70,000, the highest between £140,000-£150,000, with four of the 58 staff earning six-figure sums, whereas at Jewish Care, led by Daniel Carmel-Brown, which employs 1,329 people, only three staff are paid six figures, while at Norwood, under Dr Beverley Jacobson, which employs 919 staff, only two are paid £100,000 or more. Elsewhere in the care sector, one of the 20 staff at Camp Simcha – which has a £3.4 million income – earns £100,00+ while at Nightingale Hammerson, which has 344 staff on an income of £24.7m, two fall into that bracket. At WIZO UK, whose chief executive is Maureen Fisher, 10 people are employed full-time and two as part-time consultants with the top earner’s salary £60,000-£70,000. At youth movement JLGB, under the leadership of Neil Martin with 20 employees at the last count, the highest take-home pay is listed as £80,000-£90,000. Over at the United Synagogue, home to Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis with a staff of 846, the top earner takes home between £200,000-£250,000, while two others each earn between £150,000-£200,000. Income expenditure in 2018 totalled £48.5m. At one of the Reform movement’s biggest shuls, Edgware and Hendon Reform Synagogue, two employees earn between £110,000-£120,000, while at another big progressive shul – West London – nobody earns more than £60,000. At the Community Security Trust (CST), led by new chief executive Mark Gardner, which disburses the Government’s annual £14 million security grant and coordinates 1,500 volunteers, one member out of 92 members of staff earns £170,000-£179,000. This is more than the highest salary at the Jewish Leadership Council, currently led by joint interim CEOs Claudia Mendoza and Michelle Janes, which is listed as £150,000-£200,000 and more than the richest rewarded staffer at the Board of Deputies, who earns more than £100,000.

‘It’s like our countries are dating’ Israeli firms are licking their lips at the prospect of ties with the UAE, discovers Sandy Rashty

Fleur Hassan-Nahoum, Jerusalem’s Deputy Mayor, is looking forward to her first trip to Dubai. The Britisheducated leader is planning to make the most of the business opportunities that will come with the historic Abraham Accord, marking an era of more open relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates (UAE). As co-founder of the UAE Israel Business Council, she has plans to boost tourism between the two nations, bring UAE funding into key projects in East Jerusalem and even lead a women’s delegation to promote female business relations in both countries. “It feels like our countries are dating,” HassanNahoum says. “We both see each other as exotic birds. There’s such excitement in the air, both sides are thirsty for peace. I really hope other nations will follow with this accord, from Morocco to Oman. “It’s a very good shidduch, because the UAE have the largest sovereign wealth fund and know that in the next 20 to 30 years oil is over. They’re looking for new horizons for investment and we Israelis are generators of gamechanging solutions that could lead us into a brand new era. “There are Emiratis who want to pray at Muslim sites in Jerusalem and there are tonnes of Israelis who want to go on holiday to Dubai. “No one expects this to happen next month, but you have to start laying down the infrastructure. We could start tour guides and who knows, there could be a kosher hotel in Dubai in Pesach.” She adds: “A lot of this is preparatory work, lining up people in the relevant sectors where there are natural areas of collaboration. We can collaborate in the energy sector, water, culture and tech.” Noting plans to develop a ‘Silicon Wadi’ (meaning ‘valley’ in Arabic), she envisages Jerusalem as the focal point to build relations between the two nations. “I want to position Jerusalem as Israel’s natural bridge to the UAE because 40 percent are Arabic-speaking. “I want businesses to hire Arabic speakers in great jobs;

it can bring investment and quality employment.” Recognising the negative reaction to the Accord from the Palestinian Authority, Hassan-Nahoum says she hopes pragmatic business figures from East Jerusalem will join a future Israeli business delegation to Dubai – and vice versa. With a Moroccan background and Iraqi husband, she believes Arabic-speaking Jews in Israel will help boost ties between the nations. “We understand the culture and speak the language.” And she believes women will have a role to play in securing business relations, even intending to set up a women’s division in the Council. “People don’t realise that some of the highest executives in companies in the UAE, are women – you just don’t see them in pictures,” she notes. Near Tel Aviv, Britishborn Robert Curtis – who has co-founded the Israel-UAE Business Network – is keen to promote relations on a grassroots level, utilising LinkedIn to encourage connections and planning content, from blogs to podcasts and webinars in English, that will generate understanding and business ties between people on both sides. So far, around 2,000 people have signed up, relatively even between Israelis and Emiratis. Curtis believes the UK firms will play a key role in cementing deals between people from Israel and the UAE. “There have been some very interesting conversations already. Both countries have such historic ties with Britain that they feel safe with UK financial transactions which are world leading. There’s also not a big difference with the UK.” Speaking from Dubai’s only synagogue, Germanborn Jewish businessman Raphael Nagel is optimistic about collaboration opportunities. “We are writing history now,” he acknowledges. “We have a small Jewish community here, but a very good relationship with the locals.” And now, as chairman of the Abrahamic Business Circle – a project to promote networking and collabora-

tion between senior figures – he anticipates more business deals across sectors from food and agriculture to business and finance to be openly established between the two nations. “The UAE is a very young nation and they have a positive vision for the future, like the Jewish religion. “At the ABC, we want to welcome British and Israeli Jews, people from all over the world, to come together to create economic peace.”

Primary classes self-isolate Hertsmere Jewish Primary School (HJPS) has reported “several” confirmed cases of Covid-19, just days after pupils and staff returned for the new term, writes Joy Faulk. Following the latest advice from Public Health England, all children in Year 2 and one class in Year 5 have been asked to stay at home and self-isolate. Staff of the Year 5 class are also self-isolating. In an email seen by Jewish News, Rita AlakLevi, the headteacher of the Radlett-based school, advised that “all other children should continue to come to school as normal, but if you know you have been in direct contact with someone who has tested positive for Covid then please inform the school as soon as possible”. It adds: “We know this is an extremely unsettling period for you and your children. We would like to reassure you that we will continue to do everything we possibly can during this difficult time to support you all.” In a statement on the situation, Partnerships for Jewish Schools, the umbrella organisation for Jewish schools, said: “Headteachers and school leaders have dedicated the summer holidays to ensuring schools are as safe as possible. “Working closely with the local government and health authorities, they have imple-

mented strategies that will help protect students and staff. It is sadly inevitable that there will be occasions where classes will be asked to remain at home and self-isolate.

“This is a strategy used in schools around the world and has been shown to help protect the school environment and minimise further spread of the virus.

“Parents should be reassured by the actions taken by school leaders to date and can be confident that we are all working to try to ensure the safest possible environment for children and staff.” News of cases at HJPS comes in the same week that Yavneh College, in Borehamwood, wrote to parents and students after a number of Year 13 pupils tested positive for coronavirus days before the term was due to begin. Headteacher Spencer Lewis said “most are with mild symptoms” and were self-isolating. Both schools are situated in Hertsmere, which has reported a rise in positive coronavirus cases in the last week. Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) tweeted that there had been a “small but growing number of positive Covid-19 cases in the Borehamwood area, primarily among young adults between 16 and 17-years-old”. HCC issued an urgent plea to residents to “act now and stop the spread” by wearing face coverings, as well as maintain social distancing and hand washing. Meanwhile, Barnet Council has also reported a “small and steady increase” of positive cases over the past week. JCoSS is situated in New Barnet. HJPS has been contacted for comment.

80 years after the Blitz, the horror is fresh in the mind by Jenni Frazer @jennifrazer

This week, 80 years ago, the German Luftwaffe began a systematic bombing of London, which lasted for a terrifying eight months and five days. More than a million homes were destroyed or damaged in what became known as the London Blitz – and thousands of civilians were killed or injured. Those who have first-hand memories of The Blitz today are in their late 80s or early 90s, and were children during the bombings – which were carried out in other major British cities, too. Many were evacuated from the capital – although some did return to London, both during The Blitz and after it ended in May 1941. Among those sent out by their parents were Ron Shelley MBE, a national vice-president of the Association of Jewish Ex-Servicemen and Women, and his little sister, Anne. In 1940, however, Ron was 10 and Anne six when their parents sent them out of London to keep them safe. They went, at the outbreak of the war in 1939, to Virginia Water, Surrey, only about 20 miles from London, from their home in Stepney Green. “We assembled in a village hall while people walked round to choose which children they would take home. But nobody picked us, so the billeting officer found Mr and Mrs Hammond, and we were both taken to their home,” said Ron. The children’s parents visited whenever they could. Ron’s father, a ladies’ hairdresser, became an ambulance driver during The Blitz, a scary and risky part of civil defence. Later, despite being 38, he was called up and sent to a unit in India, while the children’s mother continued war work in England. The Shelley children remained out of London for most of the war, more than five years for Ron and around four for his sister. The Shelley family was lucky: their London tenement flat was not caught in the bombing, although plenty of their neighbours were not as fortunate. And although Ron was in Virginia Water, the fires and results of The Blitz bombing

could be seen from where he was. “We knew what was going on – one night in December 1940, we could see the flames in London.” Tragically, the bombing was not confined to London. One day at school in Surrey, the headmaster announced that Dan Plant, a pupil who sat at the next desk to Ron, had been killed, the night before. Ron explained: “There was a German bomber that was being attacked by a British Mosquito fighter plane, and instead of proceeding to London, the German pilot dropped his bombs where he was – over Weybridge, and Dan and his whole family died.” Ruth Glassman is today a Jewish Care Meals on Wheels volunteer, although her work has been disrupted by the coronavirus pandemic. She said: “My war memories are very blurred – I was very little. We lived in a house in Filey Road (Hackney) with my grandfather, my mother’s widowed father. We had the ground floor and the basement level. We had an Anderson shelter in the garden and a reinforced table, a Morrison shelter, in the basement, thought to be the safest part of the house. It was bought because I was too frightened to go into the Anderson shelter. My father used to cuddle me under the table, while my mother went into the shelter with the rest of the occupants of the house.” Ruth’s father and his brother-in-law became night-time fire-watchers throughout The Blitz, reporting where bombs had landed. During the day, her father worked in a sandbags-making factory – vital to civil defence work. One evening, Ruth was told her parents’ house had been bombed (she was by then living with her aunt and uncle in Brighton). “They said my parents and baby sister, whom I hardly knew, were on their way to Brighton. I was delighted and was allowed to stay up late to see them. It was lucky she went under the stairs with my sister, as the only part of the house left standing was the staircase.” Jeffrey Glassman, Ruth’s husband, also has early childhood memories of The Blitz. He said: “I remember standing in the playground of my

primary school wearing an overcoat with a name and address label attached, and with a gas mask on a string, over my shoulder. I must have been about four, and we were living at 32 Moundfield Road, Stamford Hill, where most of the Glassman family lived. “Because of The Blitz, we had to be evacuated. We travelled around quite a bit. [My sister] Linda was born in November 1940 in Worcester, where we lived with a lady named Mrs Potter. The house had a large garden and Mrs Potter showed me how to skin a rabbit. We moved to Stevenage and Warrington, where there was a coal mine. “We had an Anderson shelter in the garden of Moundfield Road and I remember sitting in it with Mum and Linda. Mum used to make sandwiches for us to eat in the shelter, as we often spent hours there. I remember us sitting under the staircase at home during an air raid, and also sleeping in underground Tube stations with many other families on the platform. “A V-1 rocket, called a buzz bomb or doodlebug, fell on Moundfield Road and caused

extensive damage. You could hear the buzzing noise as it flew overhead, and you knew you were safe... when it stopped buzzing was when it fell to the ground. Fortunately, we were away from London at the time. Many houses were completely flattened by the rocket, and our house had all the windows blown out, the roof blown off, and the bath from the upstairs bathroom was found in the kitchen. I was told a lady next door had died in the blast. Two young cousins, Anita and Betty, were killed in The Blitz, while they were at the doorway to an air raid shelter. Their house was in the next street to ours. He added: “The war was a terrible time to live through, particularly difficult for the women, who had no support from husbands serving abroad. They had to make the best of things with very little food or money, raising children, being evacuated and moving around the country to wherever they could stay. The Blitz meant bombing raids every night, nights spent in cold dark air raid shelters, houses destroyed and loved ones killed.”

Shul opens burial ground for Jews living south of the river Bromley Reform Synagogue (BRS) is opening a cemetery for the community in southeast London, marking the only active Jewish burial site in the region, writes Joy Faulk. It comes after BRS secured 50 plots at GreenAcres Kemnal Park in Chislehurst for Progressive Jews, giving the area’s Jewish community a longsought local option. The plots are available for use immediately through the synagogue. Jewish families in the south-east and Kent have had to tackle heavy traffic to reach north London for funerals and graveside visits, often at short notice, as Jewish tradition requires burial within 24 hours. “The community needed to find a way to help those people who wanted to be laid to rest near their homes and families, but previously had no option but to be buried in a north London Jewish cemetery,” said a BRS spokeswoman. “For many years, BRS has

been seeking a solution to this challenge, especially as it often inevitably arises at a very difficult time for newlybereaved families.” Bromley’s newly ordained Rabbi Mati Kirschenbaum said opening the cemetery in Kemnal Park would “enable us to arrange burials in a dedicated Jewish space easily accessible to our congregants and allow us to be inclusive of mixed-faith couples who are members of our synagogue”. Kirschenbaum said the cemetery would be “for the whole of the south-east’s Jewish community”, adding: “It is something our members have wanted for many years, and the fact we have been able to establish it now reflects the dynamism of our area’s Jewish population.” GreenAcres Kemnal Park is a well-established cemetery with areas dedicated to people of different faiths and none. to lease 50 double-depth plots in a designated Jewish area for BRS members and the local Jewish community “including Jews wanting to be buried with a non-Jewish partner or the ashes of a cremated loved one”. Janet Posner, the BRS representative on the Jewish Joint Burial Society, described the park as “a beautiful, green space”, adding: “It is very special that we are able to design our own gated area within the

cemetery, where, in accordance with Jewish tradition, all graves will face Jerusalem.” She said many BRS members had been unable to travel across the city for funerals or stone settings and that “this was a cause of great distress, so we hope that having a local cemetery to which friends and family can more easily visit will be of enormous comfort and importance to many in our community”.

Resting place of Jewish A-listers opens to public The London cemetery of Jewish A-listers opens its doors to visitors from all walks of life from Monday, following a fiveyear £1.7 million conservation project. Willesden Jewish Cemetery is the final resting place of scientist Rosalind Franklin, designer Kurt Geiger, jeweller Harriet Samuel, the Rothschild family, four Chief Rabbis, Tesco’s founder Jack Cohen and Pre-Raphaelite painter Simeon Solomon. After years of “painstaking conservation and research”, followed by a Covid-related delay, the Orthodox Jewish cemetery in Brent, north-west London, can finally invite visitors to discover the lives of those buried there and to explore the customs and history of the capital’s Jewish community. It is owned and looked after by the United Synagogue (US), and is the only Jewish cem-

etery on England’s Register of Parks and Gardens of Special Historic Interest. Fo l l o w i n g £1.7m of funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund, support from the US and partnership donations, visitors to the 21-acre site can now explore its new ‘House of Life’ visitor experience. Established in 1873 by Victorian Jews of German and Dutch origin, Willesden is one of London’s most interesting cemeteries, with experts saying its “design and layout reflect an immigrant community’s desire to adopt prevailing English fashions”. Curator Hester Abrams said the new heritage experience “puts Willesden Jewish Cemetery on the map as a new place to come to explore, learn and reflect on the lives of a minority community and your own life experiences”.

Conflict over memorial Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick has put himself in a “stark conflict of interest” over the handling of the planning application for a proposed national Holocaust memorial, the High Court has heard. The government is facing a legal challenge brought by the London Historic Parks and Gardens Trust over its decision-making process for a Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre in Victoria Tower Gardens – a small, triangular, Grade II-listed park next to Westminster Abbey and Parliament. Last November, the government, which made the application for planning permission for the centre, “called in” the decision on the proposal, meaning it would decide whether the project should go ahead, rather than it be determined by the local authority

– Westminster City Council. The final decision is expected to be taken by Christopher Pincher, housing minister at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, following a public inquiry due next month. At a hearing yesterday, lawyers for the trust argued there was a

conflict of interest in the way the government has approached the handling of the planning application, and that it has failed to properly put in place rules required by EU environmental regulations to ensure there is a clear separation that allows a decision on the proposal to be made independently.

Couples in England and Wales could soon get married “the Jewish way” after the Law Commission suggested relaxing rules on where a marriage can take place. Only Jewish and Quaker weddings are currently permitted to take place outdoors, but that could soon be extended to all faiths and none, as policy chiefs look to update the 1836 Marriage Act. Weddings on the beach, in gardens or even at sea may be possible, as the Commission said it wanted to help couples marry without having to pay indoor venue costs. “The laws governing how and where couples can marry are unnecessarily restrictive,” it said.

NEO-NAZIS HELD ‘JEW-HATE TEST’ A jury at Birmingham Crown Court has heard how an alleged neo-Nazi teenager had to pass an online “test” to prove his hatred of Jews before being accepted into private chats. The 17-year-old from Rugby in Warwickshire, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged

with preparing for acts of terrorism after joining Feuerkrieg Division (FKD) last summer, which he denies. Prosecutor Matthew Brook told the court the youth had wanted a firearm capable of “smashing heads” and asked a friend where he could buy a gun.

Given an online test to ensure he was “worthy” of becoming an FKD recruit, he is alleged to have told fellow UK-based extremists that fascism was “the pursuit of restoring the natural order”, with Brook saying he wanted to provoke a race war. The trial continues.

Comfort throu A secret cabal controlling the world? Now where have we heard that one before, asks Stephen Oryszczuk

With his long white hair, David Icke is easy to spot even by those at the back, as he rises to the platform. Handed the mic, the 68-year-old British conspiracy theorist, a Holocaust-denying advocate of The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, seems to be in the mood. At his feet, thousands of mask-less fans. It is 29 August 2020, and they are packed into Trafalgar Square to protest coronavirus lockdown measures. “This world is controlled by a tiny few people,” he begins, barely five minutes into his set. A few minutes later, he has the crowd (including Jeremy Corbyn’s brother, Piers) manically chanting “Freedom!” Fascism, in his telling, comes dressed as safety. As the cameras span the crowd listening to talk of “the illusion pandemic” and of “contagion fear designed to control you”, one letter stands out amid the banners and placards – Q. It refers to a conspiracy theory known as QAnon. Settle in. QAnon is the belief that US President Donald Trump is waging a secret war against a shadowy ‘cabal’ that controls governments, banks, entertainment and all manner of industries from pharmaceuticals to agriculture, keeping people serfs. This cabal is a satanic “deep state” whose members include billionaire liberal philanthropists, left-wing A-listers and Democrats. All are engaged in paedophilia and human trafficking, harvesting the blood of abused children for a life-extending chemical compound. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) politely describes it as “remarkably elaborate”. It began in 2017 with anonymous encrypted posts from the person or entity ‘Q’ on chat site 4chan and continues today on successor site 8kun. Believers think ‘Q’ is someone in the top echelons of govern-

ment, with high-level security clearance. What started as a trolling and disinformation account has grown. The ADL estimates that there are now “tens of thousands” of Qs, mainly US-based adherents. Some are even running for political office – and succeeding. It need hardly be said that aspects of QAnon lore mirror longstanding antisemitic tropes. “The belief that a global ‘cabal’ is involved in rituals of child sacrifice has its roots in the antisemitic trope of blood libel, the theory that Jews murder Christian children for ritualistic purposes,” says the ADL. “In addition, QAnon has a deep-seated hatred for [Hungarian Jewish philanthropist] George Soros, a name that has become synonymous with perceived Jewish meddling in global affairs, and QAnon’s ongoing obsession with a global elite of bankers also has deeply antisemitic undertones.” In May, the FBI identified QAnon as an “anti-government, identity-based fringe political conspiracy theory very likely to motivate domestic extremists to commit criminal, sometimes violent activity”. Trump calls Q adherents “patriots”. Critics say he is playing with fire – conspiracies have already led to Jews being killed. On 27 October 2018, a man killed 11 and injured several others at the Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh, having just reposted an online cartoon depicting the ‘Zionist Occupation Government’ conspiracy theory and saying the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society “likes to bring invaders in that kill our people”, adding: “I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.” QAnon now stretches into mainstream sites such as Facebook, Reddit, YouTube, Twitter and Discord, and pushes a welter of conspiracies in other areas, such as

Covid-19 and vaccinations. Some were quick to close in on it, others less so. Facebook only recently restricted or took down 10,000 pages, groups or Instagram accounts linked to QAnon or US militias, after researchers said the tech giant’s lethargy was helping to push dangerous myths online. The company said those using the accounts had “demonstrated significant risks to public safety”. Joan Donovan, a Harvard media researcher, warns against complacency over the QAnon narrative. “People should realise it isn’t just this outlandish conspiracy theory about child-trafficking and satanism – it’s incredibly antisemitic,” she says. In the UK, the Community Security Trust (CST) constantly reviews the immediacy of potential threats, and analysts say QAnon is not nearly as big over here as it is in the States, in part owing to its US-focus, but know that the narrative of a “global elite” seeking to undermine western Christian democracy can cross borders, and threats to children – built into Q’s conspiracy – do not just speak to Americans. “It appears to be in its infancy in the UK, certainly in terms of activism,” says one CST analyst. “In the US, it seems a lot more focused on ‘the cabal’, the elections [and] Trump, but as you migrate away from the epicentre of it, you get a sense of other conspiracy theories coming under a banner of sorts, which includes Q. “There’s a diverse nature to Q’s conspiracy hub. It’s not rigid, it has porous borders. You can think of QAnon as organic. It encompasses a number of ideological forces, as its followers are attracted to other conspiracies, such as those around 5G. “Because of that, you get this spec-

trum of believers, as we saw at Trafalgar Square, with elements of both the extreme right-wing and the extreme left-wing, and because of that spectrum of support, you get a spectrum of antisemitism.” Another CST analyst says the so-called ‘Q Drops’ (or posts) are not overtly antisemitic. “They dance around it,” he says. “Q is pitching it as anti-elite, rather than explicitly antisemitic, but it is porous – and Q supporters dance in both those circles.” Both analysts talk about a noxious pre-election “mingling or overlap of white supremacist incitement with Q-type conspiracies in addition to the [anti-government] boogaloo movement”, adding that there would be concern in the UK if this led to physical attacks in the US, which mobilised violence abroad. “Succeeds breeds success,” one notes. “When extremists see that attacks can succeed, they undertake their own.” The pair share wider worries that QAnon is symptomatic of a broader movement away from the security of society’s liberal democratic foundations, which allow minority communities to flourish, and this point is echoed by Imran Ahmed, chief executive of the Centre for Countering Digital Hate. Speaking to Jewish News from Washington, D.C, where he is launching a new report, a sleep-deprived Ahmed talks eloquently about the threat to “the sentiment that underpins the values that make liberal democracy possible”. Ahmed spends his time wading through the most deeply disturbing online antisemitism, so is well-placed to judge the threat. “QAnon has been around for a while, but it’s found new life,” he explains. “There are antisemitic themes within it, and it has

ugh conspiracy echoes of antisemitic conspiracy theories, which are deliberate. “To persuade you to believe, every conspiracy contains at its heart a non-falsifiable leap of faith that can’t be disproved by facts. It takes advantage of xenophobia, people’s sense of powerlessness in society, fundamental human characteristics. “In addition, modern conspiracies, such as Q, are designed to sound ludicrous if expressed, so they can be defended. It has its cake and eats it, saying ‘this speaks to a broader truth’, but is nevertheless deniable. It weaponises irony while playing on people’s polite embarrassment to voice the theory. “David Icke’s lizard theory is a perfect example, and people laugh, but he’s a very dangerous man who’s persuaded tens of thousands of people about coronavirus, Jews, vaccines…” Ahmed says these “anti-elitist, faux populist” conspiracies, which aim to replace the existing order with a new one, are “politics by other means”. Those means include “lies, disinformation, things that undermine liberal democ-

racy” and believes these wilful actors have been “given a free pass” on social media. “Who are the actors? Some are economically incentivised, some are foreign agents, and some are just people who are confused and believe rubbish.” We need to care less about what it is they believe and more about cleaning up the systems on which they digest this rubbish, he says pointedly. “It comes down to the social media companies – and they have shown an absolute lack of will to deal with it.” That is precisely the current focus of Danny Stone, chief executive of the Antisemitism Policy Trust, whose job includes understanding the process of online radicalisation, and pushing for legislative change in the hope of avoiding it. “QAnon is the same as every other conspiracy theory – there’s an elite out there controlling things and we need the real truth,” he says. “It’s comfort through conspiracy in uncertain times. The difference here is: it’s leapt off.” Cue the madness. Online retailer Wayfair

recently had to change all its stock codes because a Q supporter said this was how the cabal was managing its child sex-trafficking. “It doesn’t take long to radicalise people. The QAnon allegation is that there’s some Jewish or Israeli control, with this pyramid of control featuring Mossad, Jewish public figures… it’s not far off The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. “This stuff is centuries-old, but it comes in this new and exciting package, with this kind of ‘James Bond’-type mystery around the identity of Q, and debunking it is both timely and costly.” Trump is an “amplifier”, says Stone, but the more urgent focus should be on social media companies. Change is happening, he says, adding it was “no surprise” that Facebook amended its hate speech policy recently to include “Jews as world controllers” in it, but the online world is fluid and rules are not consistently applied. “Without continuing investment in technology and regulation, these conspiracies will continue to spread. We’re seeing real-life consequences to this stuff.”

Residents of a village fostering Israeli-Palestinian coexistence are “living in fear”, after a second fire devastated their community in the space of a week, writes Jack Mendel. Members of the Neve Shalom cooperative near Jerusalem were woken by a fire alarm on Sunday, as emergency services were called to battle flames at the Fred Segal Peace Library. This comes after a destructive blaze damaged the Oasis of Peace school last week, which was forced to relocate. Israeli police are said to be working with the local community to determine the causes of both blazes. Oasis of Peace UK, which supports Neve Shalom – or Wahat al-Salam in Arabic – said it has been a “model for

A drone hovering over Tel Aviv has dropped hundreds of tiny bags of cannabis, mostly in Rabin Square. Tel Avivans rushed to scoop up the bags bearing the label with the words Free Love inside a green heart. The drop is courtesy of a popular Telegram group named Green Glider that calls for the legalisation of recreational drugs. An announcement of the “Cannabis Rain Project” drops

on the Telegram channel said 1kg of cannabis, divided into 2g bags, would be dropped each week in a different part of the country, Israel’s Channel 12 News reported. The drone drops were conceived as part of an effort to figure out how to get marijuana to consumers in a new way because of the coronavirus crisis, the announcement said. Police arrested two men in their 30s shortly afterwards.

Gabor Hirsch, a Holocaust survivor who became a leading activist for commemoration in Switzerland, has died aged 90. Hirsch, who was born in Hungary in 1929 and died on 21 August, survived multiple rounds of killings at Auschwitz, to where he and his mother were deported in 1944. His mother was murdered at the Stutthof concentration camp. Hirsch returned to Hungary after the war, having spent several months recovering at a camp for displaced persons. He escaped Communist Hungary in 1956 and settled in Switzerland, where he worked as an engineer. He married Margrit in 1968, and had two sons, Mathias and Michael, and several grandchildren. In 1994, he founded with Otto Klein, another survivor, the Kontaktstelle für Überlebende des Holocaust, a Swiss association whose name means Contact point for Holocaust survivors. He lectured before thousands of students at schools and other frameworks about the Holocaust, providing detailed accounts of his own survival. “His testimonies were sober and for this very reason left a deep impression on his listeners,” Anita Winter wrote in an obituary in a Swiss newspaper. As founder of the Swiss Gamaraal Foundation, Winter led commemoration activities with Hirsch, including its project, The Last Swiss Holocaust Survivors.

Anger over Leifer failures Campaigners against child sexual abuse have called for a major review of how a Jewish former headteacher in Australia charged with 74 counts of indecent assault and rape evaded extradition for more than a decade. It follows a decision from the Supreme Court of Israel rejecting an appeal from Malka Leifer not to be expedited. Leifer fled to Israel from Australia in 2008, just hours before she was due to be arrested for sexually assaulting students at her Orthodox Adass Israel girls’ school. For more than a decade, her lawyers have delayed extradition proceedings with arguments over psychiatric assessments, but earlier this year she was found to have been “faking” the mental illness she claimed to have. Manny Waks, who was himself sexually abused as a child in an Australian yeshiva, said Leifer had “taken Israeli justice for a major ride” for years, and that the Supreme Court’s unanimous rejection still left room for her to appeal.

“It means Leifer can continue to face the extradition trial,” read a statement from the Kol v’Oz organisation he now heads from Israel. “Currently, we are awaiting the District Court decision on 21 September regarding whether she will be extradited based on the facts of the case. Leifer will still have opportunities for appeal.”

PROSECUTOR SANCTIONED The US has imposed sanctions on the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) after she allowed a complaint of Israeli “war crimes” to proceed. Announcing sanctions against the Fatou Bensouda, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the court “continues to target Americans”, in apparent reference to investigations into US Army actions in Afghanistan. He also announced sanctions against Phakiso Mochochoko, an ICC director, calling the pair “specially designated nationals” – a phrase usually used for terrorists. Fatou Bensouda

The US opposes the court’s scrutiny of alleged Israeli crimes against Palestinians, even though its investigation is also looking at alleged abuses carried out by Palestinian security forces. No US allies have supported its stance. The ICC described the US sanctions against two senior court officials as “coercive acts” that were “unprecedented”. It added: “They constitute serious attacks against the court…and the rule of law more generally.” The ICC is an international tribunal with 123 members that sits in The Hague and considers charges against those accused of war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and aggression. Israel is not a member, but ‘the state of Palestine’ joined in 2015, quickly filing a complaint alleging “crimes” committed by Israel.

Trump’s contempt is ‘shocking’ Prof pretended to be black A senior Jewish representative in Washington, DC, has described the contempt with which Donald Trump’s administration holds the US Congress as “shocking”. Rori Kramer, the former Deputy Assistant Secretary of State in the bureau of legislative affairs who is now director of US advocacy at the American Jewish World Service,

was speaking after Democrats said US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had misused state funds by make a political address during the Republican national convention from Jerusalem. Pompeo, who has made a habit of offending US allies, is refusing to comply with congressional subpoenas for documents connected

to the Ukraine scandal that led to Trump’s impeachment. “It’s really shocking,” said Kramer. “Four years ago, it would have been completely bizarro Twilight Zone that Congress could subpoena you and hold you in contempt, and the answer of the administration would be ‘I don’t care’. It’s a race to the bottom.”

A history professor who revealed she had fabricated a black cultural identity grew up attending a Jewish day school and an Orthodox synagogue. George Washington University academic Jessica Krug admitted she had “eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child in suburban Kansas City under various assumed identities within a blackness that I had no right

to claim: first north African blackness, then US rooted blackness, then Caribbean rooted Bronx blackness.” She added: “You should absolutely cancel me, and I absolutely cancel myself.” Krug attended a school called Hyman Brand Hebrew Academy and her family belonged to Congregation Ohev Sholom in a suburb of Kansas.

Suspect Stephan Balliet is currently standing trial for the attack. This year’s High Holy Days will be remembered for a very different calamity, no less tragic for many. Those fortunate not to have lost loved ones to the pandemic will have still lost something they hold dear – communal life. Negative virus story I write to express my disappointment in your reporting of Yavneh College students testing positive for Covid-19. I am frustrated that this kind of negative reporting can be justified as news. The whole of the country is on a drive to try to get back to normality. Schools are reopening and everyone is being encouraged to go back to work. This drive to normality is being led by our government but at every possible step our media seeks to destruct that by over-the-top negative reporting. We do see that the number of positive tests is going up but the number of hospital admissions from the virus is at its lowest since March, no evidence that it is going to increase. The conclusion to this is clear – more people are being tested and the people who are positive are not seriously unwell, otherwise they would be in hospital. Your report highlighted that a group of young people were socialising together. But this same group of young people would have

been together in their year group bubble in school anyway. We need to be realistic and understand that at this stage of the virus, it is not going to be possible to keep the virus out of schools completely. The schools and parents know what they need to do when individuals become unwell or test positive. It is highly likely that other year group bubbles in this school and in other schools all over the country will have the same thing occur during the academic year. It is important to remember that there is little evidence of school children becoming seriously ill from the virus if they do not have underlying health issues. I think your article missed the point completely. Yes it should have focused on positive results among this group of young people but, equally, there was negative test results too. Surely this would be a more positive and encouraging way to report? Michelle Keene By email

As an avid reader, I would like to ask your view on the the continued disregard for the laws and public safety by people continuing to host simchas in contravention of the rules in Golders Green and Stamford Hill, where an event with 200 guests was held. Why are these events receiving kashrut supervision? If kashrut authorities continue to allow caterers at these large functions and send shomers to oversee them, they are complicit in the sin and deserve public ridicule. This is a disgusting way to behave, especially when they not only have a responsibility to the public but the greater good too.

DON’T LIKE HER TONE I write in response to the Songs of Praise producer who compared singing Rule Britannia to Nazis singing about gas chambers. To compare an upbeat musical masterpiece to the Third Reich is at best lazy and at worst turning a serious discussion into a pantomime. Not only is it anti-British, it is insulting to every Holocaust survivor, every 21st century German and every Briton who has sung the song. I would never dream of telling the French that some of the lyrics of Les Marseil-

Did I ever mention I'm an octopus wrangler? JENNI FRAZER

his week we have a tale of two Jessicas, Both, sadly, Jewish. Jessica number one is someone who is no stranger to news headlines, a person in Canada called Jessica Yaniv. Having decided that he/ she is a trans activist — and, importantly, rejected as such by other trans activists — this individual, formerly Jonathan Yaniv, has mounted a long campaign against various beauty salons in his home city of Vancouver. Yaniv makes appointments for intimate body waxing without revealing that he/ she still has male genitalia. Then, when the beauticians find out and refuse to perform this service — either because it is not something provided at their salons, or for religious reasons — Yaniv sues them, alleging gender discrimination and breach of human rights. Last year Yaniv lost a complaint against three of the beauticians he/she had targeted.

A human rights tribunal ruled against him/ her, but last week he filed a civil suit against the same three women for almost £10,000. I am unsure what drives Yaniv, or what he/she gets out of his life as an apparent vexatious litigant. But his/her campaigns, it seems to me, have only damaged the trans community and polarised the gender debate. How can any court take such complaints seriously? Jessica number two is a self-admitted fake, a woman called Jessica Krug, an associate professor at George Washington University, who last week revealed that rather than being black, as she has consistently claimed throughout her professional life, she is in fact a white Jewish woman from Kansas City. The mystery here is how anyone, even the most credulous, could possibly have

thought that Jessica Krug was black. Even the most cursory of looks would have told you different. She has skated around this manifestly large problem by claiming she was a “light-skinned” person with a mixed Latino and black background. Krug appears to have jumped before she was pushed, as she was on the verge of being outed by suspicious black post-graduate students at her own university, where she lectured on Africa and the African diaspora. In her self-serving apologia on the medium.com website, Krug wrote: “To an escalating degree over my adult life, I have eschewed my lived experience as a white Jewish child.” Such behaviour, she said, was “the very epitome of violence, of thievery and appropriation, of the myriad ways in which

non-black people continue to use and abuse black identities and cultures”, adding that she had continued the pretence even in her personal relationships. The killer quote from her disappointed critics came from an academic called Yarimar Bonilla, professor of anthropology and Puerto Rican studies, who conceded she had been fooled by Krug. Professor Bonilla wrote: “Kind of amazing how white supremacy means she even thought she was better at being a person of colour than we were." At the core of all this is the hot topic of self-identification and so-called “cultural appropriation”, whose fanaticism was felt by the singer Adele when she dressed up to celebrate Notting Hill Carnival. So here we are, with a slew of mixed messages and a horde of disappointed followers in one of the most electric political climates we have known for years. Why UAE deal could be a strategic masterstroke NADAV TAMIR FORMER ADVISER TO SHIMON PERES

here's great debate about who wins and loses from the surprising agreement between Israel and the UAE and consequent suspension of the Israeli annexation plan. The agreement has a significant winwin-win potential as so far as it is leveraged to advance a Israeli-Palestinian accord. However, the agreement could be harmful if it is used to avoid an agreement with the Palestinians. The gains for Israel are evident. First and foremost, the agreement establishes diplomatic and economic relations with the UAE and may open the door for normalisation with additional Arab states. As to the more strategic issue of promoting an Israeli-Palestinian agreement, preventing annexation is certainly important but not sufficient. The agreement might become a strategic achievement if the UAE chooses to play a role

in resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Demonstrating pro-peace leadership by the UAE (such as its effort to suspend annexation due to the agreement) is especially important in view of the ineffective diplomacy exercised by the current US administration. Qatar’s involvement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is also problematic because it amounts merely to transferring funds to Gaza and results in strengthening Hamas rather than the Palestinian Authority. The agreement is far more positive than the empty, or even harmful gestures that Trump gave Israel (and his evangelical supporters) – relocating the US embassy to Jerusalem, recognising Israel’s sovereignty in the Golan Heights, and withdrawing from the nuclear agreement with Iran. Relocating the embassy did not change Jerusalem’s status in the slightest, but it hurt the American leverage by deepening the rift between the Trump’s administration and the Palestinians. Recognising Israel’s sovereignty in the Golan resulted in the pathetic renaming of a settlement in the Golan to

“Trump Heights”. Furthermore, it prevents the US from becoming a significant player on issues involving international law. The withdrawal from the nuclear deal and the consequent dismantling of the international coalition against Iran was detrimental to Israel. The ensuing damage became evident just recently, when the US failed to pass a resolution to extend the arms embargo on Iran in the UN Security Council. In contrast, if the UAE wisely exerts its influence to create levers toward advancing an Israeli-Palestinian agreement in the spirit of the Arab Peace Initiative from 2002, then

the tactical benefit of the UAE’s agreement with Israel will become a strategic benefit. In spite being a small country, the UAE has considerable regional influence. It also has an economic impact and leverage on the Israeli business sector and can contribute to the development of the Palestinian Authority. The agreement brings to the surface what has been going on for years under the radar. There is growing Arab acceptance of Israel as a legitimate entity in the region, provide that it accepts the principle of a two-state solution with the Palestinians. Mahmoud Abbas has already agreed to some of the key conditions, including to a demilitarised state. What is missing today is political leadership that will take advantage of the new positive regional context to rescue Israel from the toxic status quo, which is currently leading us to a bi-national state. It is hoped that the agreement with the UAE will bring about the required pro-peace leadership, which will advance a two-state solution. Only this will enable Israel to truly be a part of the Middle East.

Separation the only hope for peace and security YAIR GOLAN

still grieve over Israel’s disengagement from Gaza 15 years ago. It was a painful move which led to the destructions of homes and towns, and it shattered the dreams of many. I too share the deep and emotional bond to every part of Eretz Yisrael felt by my fellow Israeli citizens who were evacuated from their homes in the Gaza Strip and northern Samaria in the West Bank. I have walked this land’s paths, travelled across it with my children, and defended it during my 38 years of military service. Yet the disengagement only demonstrated a principle that most Israelis have come to accept, and those who still deny it will come round to it one day. That is the concept of separation. We must separate from the Palestinians. As early as the beginning of the 20th century it was accepted that separation from the Palestinians is a necessary condition to

the existence of the State of Israel. After the wave of terror that accompanied the Arab uprising of 1936, David Ben Gurion and his peers came to terms with the fact that there is no other choice but partition. It was this understanding that led to the Zionist acceptance of the 1947 partition plan and prevented Ben Gurion from occupying Judea and Samaria at the end of Israel’s War of Independence the following year – despite being capable of it. And it was the partition principle that led Rabin to accept the Oslo Accords and pull Israel out of Palestinian town centres and civilian life. Even the father of the settlement movement, the late Ariel Sharon, came to accept this principle and as prime minister he devised and implemented the disengagement

plan. This plan, which has not been fully implemented, was meant to lead to de jure borders between Israelis and Palestinians. Ultimately, despite the challenges and the fact it was made unilaterally, the 2005 disengagement from Gaza was the right move strategically, and an essential one in terms of security. Some claim that all Israel got in return for the disengagement were rockets. That is misleading. The truth is that Israeli communities near the Gaza border have suffered rocket fire since 2001, years before the disengagement. Moreover – and contrary to common myths – Israeli settlements and continued IDF presence within the Strip up to 2005 did not stop Hamas from gaining power or building tunnels into Israel.

In terms of security, the settlements were a burden that required a massive and permanent military presence, causing constant friction between the settlers and the Palestinians and between IDF forces and the local population. Fifteen years later, it is easy to forget the daily violence and the incessant killing of both soldiers and civilians in the Strip, the armoured personnel carriers accompanying school buses, the soldiers searching for the remains of their comrades in the sand, the frequent chasing after rock-throwers at places like the al-Shati refugee camp. In the five years before the disengagement, no less than 162 Israelis were killed in terrorist attacks in the Strip, yet in the 10 years since the disengagement – double that time period, which included the 2014 Protective Edge operation – 140 Israelis were killed. Partition is hope. If we do not separate, we will have no hope for peace and security. We will find no refuge from ourselves, from our own consciences, and we will not be able to explain this to our children. The sooner we accept and implement it, the better.

s we look towards Rosh Hashanah and begin a time of reflection on the last year, the coronavirus pandemic is, sadly, what many of us will remember of the last 12 months. At Jewish Care, from an early stage, we took a series of measures to help prevent the spread of Covid-19 across all our resources, and continue to take measures in line with guidelines, to keep all those in our care safe and protected to the best of our ability. Measures included cancelling all in-person events and gatherings, investing in PPE and procuring more than 1,750,000 items of PPE to date and suspending indoor visits to our care homes and independent living facilities. We are now facilitating socially distanced, outdoor visits where it is safe to do so. We have also consistently campaigning for

Covid-19 testing for our staff and residents. We are also now able to accept new residents into our care homes where it is safe to do so. There are very strict criteria in place for how we take people into our care homes, including a negative Covid -19 test and a 14-day isolation period for all new residents. We redeployed a number of Jewish Care staff to help facilitate phone calls, video calls or a Skype call with a loved one instead of a physical visit and purchased a number of additional iPads for use in our care homes for this purpose. Jewish Care extended the offer of a number of additional services to those that these closures may have affected, including, but not limited to meals on wheels and phone befriending services, which have all been helped by the huge number of additional volunteers that have come forward. By early September, we had delivered over 25,000 meals on wheels to those who need them and are making over 1,000 calls a week to the most vulnerable and isolated member of our community. In the run up to Rosh

Hashanah these meals will include the traditional treats, such as honey and honey cakes. Although we have had a number of residents, clients, staff and volunteers who have made a full recovery from Covid-19, our thoughts are with the families of those who sadly lost loved ones to the virus. They will always be a part of the Jewish Care family. We have also had a number of very special moments during the pandemic. We celebrated birthdays, anniversaries and fundraising challenges. We celebrated Pesach in all of our homes and independent

living facilities with Zoom seders, online Haggadahs, pre-recorded prayers, delivered seder plates and meals. Our residents were frequently sent letters, drawings and messages of support from the community, our volunteers and schoolchildren. For Rosh Hashanah this year, we have a number of resources on our website, including a recorded shofar blowing, messages from community members and pre-recorded synagogue services. There will also be a shofar blowing in care home gardens before Rosh Hashanah so residents can hear the sound through the windows. This is also traditionally a time when one visits parents and deceased relative’s burial stones, to honour them. Jewish Care staff are now able to take a photo of the stone online to share with residents and members of community centres who would usually go to the burial grounds but are unable to do so. We hope that you and your families keep safe and well, and that this Rosh Hashanah brings only a happy and healthy new year for us all.

More than 70 12 to 19-yearolds with mild to moderate learning disabilities and autism learned to cook, dance and perform thanks to the Langdon Brady Summer Scheme. Following Covid-friendly rules, the charity teamed up with UJIA to create a programme around the theme of Israel. Activities included Israeli cooking with Denise Phillips, a dance session led by Ilai Szpiezak and a talk by former Israel Defense Forces soldier Marc Goldberg. One parent said: “Every year we struggle to find a camp for our son. This year was a complete game changer where my wife and I were amazed how excited he was to go every day. It had such a positive and uplifting impact on him.” Langdon youth services manager Daniel Sinclair called the scheme “a huge success” and said it helped “develop friendships, learn new skills and increase their confidence”.

Hannah Leston, a resident at Jewish Care’s Otto Schiff care home in Golders Green, was thrilled to hear her design will feature on the charity’s New Year e-cards being sent out to the community. Jewish Care’s director of fundraising and community engagement, Adam OverlanderKaye, said: “Rosh Hashanah may feel very different this year, but we will still be celebrating with residents and visiting the community. Our telephone and virtual befrienders will wish our service users a happy new year over the phone, while our Meals on Wheels drivers and volunteers will be visiting those who are housebound and community centre members with gifts of apple and honey. We wish the whole community a Shana Tova.” Former volunteer Hannah said: “I’ve always liked art and got a few prizes when I was at school. I’m good with my hands and enjoy needlework, knitting and painting.”.

Volunteers packed more than 4,000 honey jars and 7,000 Rosh Hashanah gift sets ahead of the High Holy Days. Kisharon’s head of community engagement and social enterprise Sarah Sharlott, said: “The scale of this volunteer effort has been amazing. The dedication, enthusiasm and good humour of all the volunteers has made the experience unforgettable.” University student Maddy, who enlisted some friends to help out alongside herself, mother and sister, said: “We had a really productive day and instead of catching up over a coffee or lunch we were able to use our time for a better cause while enjoying each other’s company. I hope everyone enjoys their honey!”

OBITUARY

My beautiful sister, Brenda Goldman nee Gilbert, was sadly taken from us on 22 August 2020. She is now with her husband, David, who passed away only three months earlier, and now both reunited with their eldest daughter, my beautiful niece, Yvonne. She leaves behind two devoted children, Stephen and Beila, 3 precious grandchildren and an abundance of family and friends, forever in our hearts, sadly gone but most definitely never forgotten. JLE – PROVIDING LIFELINES TO IT’S STUDENTS Growing up in Plymouth, Adam Aloof never experienced a Jewish environment or any type of familiarity with Judaism. He moved to Leeds for university and then eventually to London, but found it hard to break into the Jewish social scene. A chance conversation with a distant relative, came with the suggestion that he contact the JLE, and from the first moment that he walked into the Golders Green centre, Adam’s life changed dramatically.

“Simply put, I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for the JLE and all they have given me,” says Adam. “But beyond the social lifeline, the Rabbis at the JLE

introduced me to an altogether more meaningful Jewish life, opening the door to knowledge, and helping me deal with the struggles I encountered. JLE offered me an environment to explore what it means to be a Jew in the 21st century – at my own pace”.

And Adam’s story is by no means unique, because he echoes the founding principles of the JLE – encouraging people to live more meaningful lives. For Natalie Simberg, the JLE proved to be a lifeline from the first moment that she touched down from Sydney Australia on a two year work visa:

“Having left my family behind and travelling across the world I was worried that in London I would be disconnected from family and from my Judaism. I had been told that the JLE was the place to go and on my very first day in London I found myself at the JLE and at ease.”

Natalie joined the Young Professionals programme, as they travelled to Israel later that year. The trip left her determined to explore her Jewish heritage and three years later, Rabbi Dov Cowan officiated at her wedding, surrounded by family and friends.

“I can’t thank the JLE enough” says Natalie, “They are there

for me and so many others like me. Their input was a real lifeline in all senses of the word.”

In the autumn of 2013, Josh Kendall, a post-graduate of Manchester University walked into the JLE’s centre. As Josh told us;

“I was an uninspired Jew. I didn’t see the point in the outdated and convoluted laws and rituals and had no interest whatsoever in the Jewish ‘scene’, but I thought I’d give it one more chance.”

After hearing the keynote speaker that evening, Josh decided to sign up for the JLife beginners series and embarked on a journey that took him on life-changing JLE trips to Prague and Israel. Four years down the line and Josh, a now proud and committed Jew was standing under the chuppah with his wife, Sarah (a fellow JLE student), taking the first steps in building a Jewish home.

“My life and home would be completely different right now if

it wasn’t for the JLE. They are a constant source of support, shining a torch to light my way”.

Josh, Natalie and Adam’s stories are not unique. They are joined by hundreds of other young Jews for whom the JLE is the singular source of strength, support and guidance as they build their lives. For more than 35 years, the JLE has served as a lifeline for young Jews. Far more than just an educational centre, it is the life-giving hub that extends the opportunity to so many young Jews, not just survive but to thrive.... Their lifeline is our responsibility.

First class music man Joy Sable speaks to Mitch Murray, who penned chart-topping hits of the 1960s and 1970s, ahead of the release of 10 stamps celebrating his career

ot many of us can claim to have appeared on a set of stamps. The gold medal-winning athletes of Great Britain’s 2012 Olympic team were accorded that honour, as were the Beatles and Queen – that’s Queen the rock band, not the Queen, whose image, even if only in tiny silhouette, is on all stamps. Now veteran songwriter Mitch Murray, whose work includes some of the most popular tunes of the 1960s and 70s, joins that select group of people when the Isle of Man Post Office issues a set of 10 stamps celebrating his career. Murray, 80, who penned hits for the likes of Cliff Richard, Gerry and the Pacemakers and Freddie and The Dreamers and has lived on the Isle of Man for more than 40 years, says: “I’m really flattered by it. I had to keep it quiet for ages as it was last year when they spoke to me about it and there has been a lot of work since then. “You can’t say anything until the Queen has approved it. I’m just so happy that I’ve got a beautiful set of stamps. The set is called Mitch Murray’s Top Ten, which is a nice title. “They represent various phases in my career. I had total input, which was even more flattering. We had the question of how you get across a career on 10 stamps. “I thought the best way would be to put it on sheet music and I think they captured it beautifully.” Each stamp depicts a different piece of sheet music, with images of the acts who performed his songs. There is Tony Christie, looking suave and terribly 1970s in his flares for Avenues and Alleyways, while Gerry of Gerry and the Pacemakers is grinning broadly on the first class stamp commemorating How Do You Do It and I Like It – both number one hits, with words and music by Murray. Another stamp features an Ivor Novello award (Murray has two), and the wittiest stamp shows some members of the memorably named SODS, the Society of Distinguished Songwriters, a club founded by Murray for that talented elite. Among its more than 40 members are Don Black, Gary Barlow and Sir Tim Rice. Murray, whose daughters Gina and Mazz have both inherited the musical gene and appeared in West End shows, is particularly pleased that stamp had Her Majesty’s approval. Lockdown has been a busy time for the talented music man, who was awarded a CBE by the Prince of Wales last year. “There is so much to do on the stamp issue. They don’t just release stamps – they release booklets, pamphlets and first day covers and each one of those needs some writing, and I’m the one Mitch Murray they asked to do it.”

An ingenious idea means the stamps also include an embedded code which can be “Zap-accessed” to download a new composition by Murray. “That’s first in the world,” he says.

The Isle of Man Post Office team had already produced a set of stamps featuring birds, with a QR [Quick Response] code embedded with the appropriate bird calls. “Immediately that gave me an idea and I thought, I think we can do a lot better than that and we worked it out. I wrote a special piece of music, symphonic really, which turns into pop, comedy and fantasy. It is all about the Isle of Man Fairy Bridge, one of the island’s great tourist attractions.” Murray, who was born Lionel Michael Stitcher and grew up in Golders Green, started his career writing both words and music, but preferred working on the latter. “I did write some very good lyrics, but I didn’t enjoy it. Songwriters didn’t really work with the bands, unless you were part of one. "These days, it is nearly always somebody within the group, but

in the early days you weren’t welcome in the studio when they were making a record of your song. Half the time they really trashed it. “The only control you had as a songwriter was to make good demos, and all they had to do was copy it, but they still managed to screw it up. “Eventually, songwriters started to become record producers in order to control their work and what was happening to it, not particularly for the extra money, but for the quality. So, like others, I was a producer.” In a world in which online streaming is the norm, Murray longs for the days of popping into a record shop to hear the latest single. “The money was so much better, and it was so easy to control – you either had a hit, or you didn’t. But if you had a hit, you would know you were going to make money. “I knew if I had a top five hit in the UK, it would sell a couple of million around the world at least. Nowadays, you might get that many hits online, but you don’t make that kind of money. IN PRODUCTION Five Days At Memorial Pulitzer Prize-winning author Sheri Fink’s novel, which chronicles the events shortly after Hurricane Katrina made landfall, will be turned into a new series on Apple Tv+. Five Days At Memorial tells the story of the first five days in a New Orleans hospital after disaster hit the city in 2005. When the floodwaters rose, the power failed, the heat climbed and exhausted caregivers were forced to make life-and-death decisions that haunted them for

years to come. Fink will serve as a producer on the project, while director John Ridley (12 Years A Slave, American Crime) will also co-write alongside Carlton Cuse (Jack Ryan, Lost).

FILM The Lost Daughter Irish heartthrob and Normal People star Paul Mescal has landed a role in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s directorial debut, The Lost Daughter. Gyllenhaal, sister to Hollywood actor Jake, has also penned the script, which is an adaptation of Elena Ferrante’s 2006 novel of the same name. Other stars who have already been confirmed for the feature film include Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley, Dakota Johnson and Peter Sarsgaard. The Lost Daughter tells the story of a college professor (Colman), who is forced to confront her troubled past after meeting a woman (Johnson) and her young daughter while

on holiday. Speaking about the film to Variety, Gyllenhaal said: “When I finished reading Elena Ferrante’s The Lost Daughter Daughter, I felt that something secret and true had been said out loud. And I was both disturbed and comforted by that. “I find that the script has attracted other people interested in exploring these secret truths about motherhood, sexuality, @daniel_elias femininity and desire.”

I don’t know what’s going on in the rest of the world, but when I walk down the street to get a coffee in 2020 New York City, I have to thank God that I have 2020 vision and the reflexes of a champion boxer to duck any knockdown sucker punches. And this is on 57th Street, what they call Billionaires’ Row. I can’t imagine what’s going on way Uptown, Downtown or in the Bronx. Bonfire of the Vanities is like nonsense compared to this. The city has gone to the dogs, the pits, in drerd. Makes you want to stay inside and order food. That’s what everyone was doing until all their favourite restaurants shuttered. I have a new name for restaurants that are recently closed. They are ‘cloved’. Covid schmovid cloved. One after the other, all of my favourite restaurants are finished. Where can you get a decent sandwich in this town? And if you even think of going off on me about some sort of privilege shpiel, you know where you can shove it. And you know who is solely responsible for all of this? Our two schmegeggi state and city leaders, Mr de Blasio and Mr Cuomo. These two schmucks have led us down a dark and dreary path. The two Putzes-in-chief, but really putz is too nice of a word to call either of them. Actually, it’s an insult to putzes worldwide to include them in that estimable category. These guys have made our lives intolerable. The degradation of my beloved city has happened in front of my eyes, well at least from what I can see on the TV screen while 60 floors up. It’s a nice view, but it cost a pretty penny. I know the last time this kind of thing happened, it took someone like my favourite dinner partner Giuliani to come to the rescue. Who’s going to be our Giuliani this time? Only in America can murderers and criminals be put on pedestals. The world is upside down and topsy turvy. No one would believe it if I said in my act that you should let criminals out of prison, but if you don’t wear a mask you’re going to be arrested. A murderer is let out because of fear that they will contract the coronavirus, and they’re free to commit crimes again. The truth is I retired at the right time. With all due respect, my genius was that I was able to say exactly what I thought, and left my audience laughing, but more importantly, thinking. I wouldn’t be able to do that today. It’s not a good time for comedians to speak their minds unless, of course, it’s to say that they hate Trump and then it’s easy. You don’t even have to make up jokes you just repeat over and over ‘I hate Trump’. That’s why I just like to do private dates

now, where I can say and do what I want. Otherwise, anything you say is immediately called racist and sexist. You get called a pig and a degenerate. You really gotta put yourself out there to be a public figure. So the next time you ask me to write this for nothing, I’m not so sure I’m going to agree. And while we’re talking about it, I have to mention that you can find me on Cameo. It’s a website, you can look it up. I’m not going to tell you anything else. See, you’re curious already. In regards to the frightening times we’re living in, the political climate is the most pressing matter of all. If you ask any Democrat why do they hate Trump so much, they answer because of what he did to this country. I ask them, what

Give me bad attitude all you want as long as it comes with a cheque and tax refund. Let me ask you, if you needed to go to the dentist, are you more concerned about the dentist being a good dentist or having a good personality? I’ll take the guy who wrecks my teeth, but is friendly. No! I want the guy who fixes my teeth, and he could have the worst bedside manner of all time. Same thing when I call the plumber, and same thing when I vote for president. Really, how can a Jew not love Trump? I heard a rumour from my high-placed sources, but shhh, please don’t tell anybody, that in four years, after Trump leaves office, he’s going to run for president of Israel and he’ll win. You have a few questions for me...? It would be encouraging to share your thoughts on the pandemic and how we mentally survive this. Well, the way I’ve been handling it is I spend some time in the living room, then I turn and I’m suddenly in front of the TV, and I watch a bit, and then somehow I’m in the kitchen, and then back in front of the

TV, and then I do some Cameo work, but before I know it, I’m back by the refrigerator. Most of the time some ice cream is a great help. What do you miss about performing? The cash. What will be different about this year’s Rosh Hashanah? None of the women will get a chance to show off their new outfits. The women are crying and the men are ecstatic because they’re saving a fortune. Who would you invite to be at your table to break the fast? Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Albert Einstein, Mark Twain, Ariel Sharon, and Benjamin Disraeli – and if you want to know what the menu will be, you’ll have to send me a couple of dollars. Okay, okay, since I like you, I’ll tell you the menu would be latkes, blintzes, pastrami and corned beef. We ask them and they always say these nonsense things like he doesn’t sound like a president, he’s not presidential. He doesn’t even look like a president. So don’t look at him! Who told you to look at him? You have a TV that only has one channel? Change the channel if you don’t want to watch him. Let me ask you, if I give you $3,000 would

Honeysuckle later floated on the London Stock Exchange. Today, the former Northern Businesswoman of the Year runs a successful property development and interior design business. According to official statistics, around 730,000 people have lost their jobs in the UK since lockdown began in March, in the largest quarterly slump in employment since 2009, and economists predict a wave of unemployment as the government’s job retention scheme is gradually wound down by October. “There is no guarantee of job security in this market. Your CV and business plan need to be in the best shape possible,” she advises. “You must start your CV strong. People lose attention. I don’t like anything too long – it’s boring. In the first chapter, get across what you are about, what your strengths are, and then always tailor it to the job you are going after.” As for stand-out business plans, she says: “Well, there are plenty of awful ones. Someone on The Apprentice might have a current business making £20,000 - £30,000 a year, but they will write something like: ‘With Lord Sugar’s investment, I will make £1.5 million’. “I like to say ‘dream big but be realistic’. I have seen a lot of ‘pie in the sky’ plans. The backbone of them can be good, but they need guidance.” She adds: “A stand-out one is one that isn’t too long, captures your attention, is a good idea and has real potential. It doesn’t matter if there are a few mistakes or you get some figures wrong; if the idea has potential and the vision is realistic, you can make something of it.”

In her course, Plant says business plans should be no more than 10 pages. “I’ve had ones in The Apprentice that have been 90 pages – and 85 of them you can throw in the bin.” Covid prevented production this year, but it would have been Plant’s sixth Apprentice series after Lord Sugar brought her in to his inner circle of advisers alongside fellow Jewish business figures Claude Littner and Claudine Collins. “Lord Sugar probably wants advisers who can relate to him. Although the average age of The Apprentice viewers is between 18 and 40, I guess he doesn’t want a 30-year-old advising him. He wants someone who has been on a business journey like him.” When it comes to her persona as the ‘Queen of Mean’, she says: “My brief from Lord Sugar was he wanted someone to dig deep, expose the weaknesses and look at the business plan side. “The show is edited so it looks like I might not give anyone a chance to answer. But what people have to understand is when I come across as the ‘Queen of Mean’, yes I am ‘mean’ with Lord Sugar’s money. There’s £250,000 going into an idea so we have to make sure the investment is as safe as it can be. “I don’t like waffle and I don’t like bulls***. Let’s get to the facts and the main nitty gritty.” A regular agony aunt on the BBC’s Your Money and Your Life, Plant believes the crisis could foster a new breed of entrepreneurs. “Disney came out of the 1929 crash. In the 2008 crash, Airbnb was born. And FedEx was born out of a recession, so out of tough times, can come great things. “People might be forced to try something, either alongside their current job, or if they are not working. If you’ve got an idea, I would say ‘have a go’, because if I wouldn’t have had a go…” A mother to three boys, Plant feels privileged to be able to use her success to help others. “I have been lucky in my business life and want to give back.” Active within the Jewish community, Plant is a member of St John’s Wood Synagogue.

Finding Meaning in the High Holy Days for our Mental Health By Emma Dorman, Senior Education Coordinator, Jami As September begins, the academic year kicks into life and the High Holy Days await on the horizon. However we experience or celebrate our Jewishness, these days often hold some form of meaning. For some they are marked by a drive to repent, for others an opportunity to reflect or connect with ourselves and the community. This year will look different for many reasons. Will we be able to participate in some form of community prayer service? What social distancing or hygiene measures will be in place? We may be concerned about feeling part of a community whilst being kept apart, and many of us will miss the family moments most of all. There will also be a heightened awareness of family members or friends who are sadly no longer with us. Whilst Covid-19 may change things for us this year, we can still find ways to support ourselves and each other to remain connected. Religion & Spirituality For many of us religion and spirituality can support our mental health. The High Holy Days are a perfect time to re-explore and re-connect with this element of self-care. Many rabbis and community leaders are providing reassurance that prayer is as meaningful and as effective even when practiced at home.

Find Meaning Having a meaning and a purpose is integral to our mental health. Rosh Hashanah is an excellent time to reflect and even make resolutions. We may find meaning for this time of year by accessing education or lectures from community or pastoral leaders during or in the run up to the High Holy Days. Think broadly about online education options offered virtually in real time. But also reading resources and podcasts which can help us connect to meaning. Community The High Holy Days, like many Jewish festivals, have a focus on community. Whilst we’re still socially distancing to some degree, community may feel like a distant memory. We know that during Covid-19 many have struggled with feeling isolated and alone. Take some time to think about who and how you can connect over this period. Community isn’t just about friends and family, it’s also about being part of something bigger and finding a place in wider society that provides us with connection. Who will you arrange to

spend time with during the High Holy Days? Are there virtual ways to connect or appropriate socially distanced ways of meeting face-to-face? Attending services, in some format, can foster a feeling of community. Don’t forget to check-in with neighbours or the members of your local community who are shielding or isolated at home. Connection We all need to feel some form of connection in our lives. We are social beings and need an individualized sense of belonging. For some of us we may find connection through spirituality. Being part of a religious service, engaging in familiar tunes and understanding prayers can help foster this. For others it might be finding a sense of community with family, friends and neighbours. And there are those of us who find connection in the familiar traditions of this time of the year. These customs link us, not only to our immediate family and heritage, but to a wider history and identity of Jewishness which goes back centuries.

Project Lily Leading the Way with Vital Mental Health Training • Are you prepared for Covid-19 mental health fallout? • Are you looking after your staff’s mental health? • Are they equipped to respond to their own and others’ mental health issues? Project Lily was created in 2017 to tackle mental health challenges in the Jewish Community. In light of the COVID-19 crisis, its unique approach has never been needed more. Lisa Radford, Project Lily’s Operations and Development Director explains: “Even without the impact of Covid-19, one in four people are affected by a mental health condition in their lifetime. However, research conducted by BUPA at the end of May 2020 suggests that the UK is facing an unprecedented escalation in the need for support due to the pandemic.” Bupa’s study shows that 82% of adults have experienced symptoms indicative of poor mental health such as continuous low mood, anxiousness, low selfesteem, or hopelessness while in lockdown, yet almost half (44%) haven’t told anyone. This is a dramatic rise from 2019 when just one in five (22%) felt they had to bottle their feelings up. As the Chair of Project Lily’s Trustees, David Coffer, put it: “The Covid-19 lockdown was an earthquake; we have to prepare now for the resulting mental health tsunami.” Project Lily tackles mental health issues with an effective preventative approach, captured in their mantra: “Everyone stumbles sometimes. We’re there so they don’t fall.” By providing robust mental health training, Project Lily have equipped organisations’ staff to not only care for themselves, but also to provide vital early interventions for their colleagues and clients. These interventions can stop someone who is ‘stumbling’ from having a rapid decline that needs counselling therapy; something that pre-pandemic they would have to wait a minimum of three months to get on the NHS. Project Lily has been running for three years and is proud to have Lady Elaine Sacks as a hands-on Honorary Patron. They provide ongoing support to partner organisations with a clinical team that gives advice, supervision and manages a network of therapy professionals, however, right now the priority is to prepare organisations with much-needed training for their front-line staff.

Lisa goes on to add: “There’s a real urgency for organisations now to get the mental health training they need and I’m delighted that the Coronavirus Community Support Fund, distributed by The National Lottery Community Fund, has awarded us a grant to support our training work.” “Our experience is that many organisations provide amazing services for the people they work with, but very often their staff aren’t aware of the mental health issues that they commonly encounter. People can be functioning normally on the outside but inside they’re starting to fall apart. SEDRA Nitzavim-Vayelech BY RABBI ZVI SOLOMONS Nitzavim-Vayelech is a very dramatic Torah portion. Spoken by Moses right on the very edge of the crossing of the Jordan, the Jewish people are reminded of their duties and their covenant with the Almighty. We follow God’s laws, and He will be our God and protect us. During this month of Ellul, we have the opportunity to consider our own actions in the past year, and how we can become better people, in the year ahead. Even were we not to believe in God, this would be a fruitful exercise. As Jews, we are connected to God by a covenant, that we shall follow his laws, and He shall be our God. The previous Parasha tells us what will befall us if we fail to keep our part of the deal, in a long and painful curse. This week, on the brink of the great endeavour of conquering Canaan, Moses reminds us of this contract. It is eternal, and it is made with our descendants forever. It is unusual to bind future generations to any contract, but God and the Jewish people have a relationship

that transcends the normal human law. Our ancestors at Sinai bound us to God in accepting the Torah. We renewed this on crossing the Jordan and accepting our destiny. It was again renewed, as recounted in the Book of Esther, when our ancestors accepted the Torah. In the wake of the Holocaust, Rabbi Yitz Greenberg suggests God broke his covenant with the Jewish people. We, however, remained faithful despite the destruction unleashed upon our families. Some suggest this interpretation is excessive. Regardless of any breach, we should bear in mind our relationship with God all year, particularly the High Holy Days, when God is enthroned as our King and Judge, as well as our loving father. In these days of the Covid pandemic, it can do no harm to consider how we can best respond to Moses’ challenge, to renew our Jewish lives as we enter the New Year.

Torah For Today What does the Torah say about: Last Night of the Proms BY RABBI DANIEL FRIEDMAN For the Last Night of the Proms, the BBC announced a ban on songs with connections to colonialism, before doing a U-turn. What does the Torah say about this? The Torah contains various laws that do not comport with our modern sensibilities. How should we deal with slaves? How do we treat female enemy captives? The Torah offers these laws not as a mandate to maintain slaves or bring anyone into marriage without consent. Rather, they are instructions to those who may have chosen to act in such primitive ways. If you were to buy a slave, then you must respect their rights. If you were to desire a female captive, you may not violate her on the battlefield. You must bring her home and allow her to mourn her family. In other words, you must treat these human beings with dignity and respect. But if such practices are no longer acceptable, why does the Torah, an eternal guide, preserve them?

Because we do not rewrite history. We acknowledge and own our past, warts and all. “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Likewise, we welcome the decision to sing Land of Hope and Glory as usual this year. After all, it speaks to who we are as the people of Great Britain. We are proud to be citizens of a land of hope and glory. The song Hatikvah (The Hope) was heard in Bergen Belsen. When that hope came to fruition in the establishment of the state of Israel, the country didn’t abandon the tune. Israel embraced the sentiment of hope, a commitment to striving

constantly for a better future. Likewise, glory in Hebrew is tiferet, which embodies the ‘harmony’ between the two characteristics of giving (chesed) and withholding (gevurah). If we were to give our children everything, they would never learn the importance of hard work. Tiferet is the process of striking the right balance, finding the harmonious, glorious sweet spot. Glory means the commitment to the process of seeking harmony. Often, that entails accepting the mistakes we’ve made in the past – not brushing them under the rug and rewriting our history. Facing up to them, educating our children about our nation’s journey, and forever endeavouring to grow from our past missteps – that’s how we truly become Great Britain. ◆ Rabbi Daniel Friedman serves Hampstead Garden Suburb Synagogue

To live life worried about risk is to not live at all

‘Cross-dressing is not just a choice’

BY RABBI AARON GOLDSTEIN “A woman must not put on a man’s apparel, nor shall a man wear woman’s clothing; for whoever does these things is abhorrent to the Eternal your God” (Deuteronomy 22:5). This line was part of my barmitzvah portion, although I never read it. Having a Liberal rabbi as a father gave licence to choose the sections I was to read, and so anything considered inappropriate was missed out. We remain Liberal and skip where today we find irrelevancy, but this verse is one I feel worth examining. Jewish tradition, as with most traditions, was patriarchal and interested in a simple life. Clutter was undesirable, unfussy categorisation far easier to manage. The overarching idea was that if you create boundaries to keep everyone in a box, it creates order. This was also applied to our understanding of the divine will. In this case, a binary understanding of gender and sexuality views a clothing style that differs from the expected norm as

altering ‘God’s design’. There is a rather obvious problem with this, at least if our understanding is that cross-dressing and other gender and sexuality issues are not choices, but something of our being. If this is the natural order or God’s design, how do we explain the fact of people who wish to cross-dress? Younger generations constantly challenge us and generally lead to progression in society when they get to make the rules. We cannot say that allowing complexity, fluidity of boundaries and a breaking down of binary thinking is easy. Far from it, and perhaps we are all struggling with that. Yet in questioning ourselves, we may find ourselves describing long-held categories as prejudicial. We may find ourselves less judgmental and more able to live according to an individual’s merits.

It’s time for normal business to resume. That’s the message from the government, in any case, as it continues to make clear its desire for workers to leave behind their home working and return to the office. I have some sympathy with the difficult task at hand – there is real damage to some parts of our economy being caused by the radical shifts in how we work now. At the same time, it is vital to not put people at undue risk. We know that the value of life is paramount. But to live life caring only about minimising all risk is to not live at all. How do we decide where the balance lies? Our tradition has further guidance beyond the commandment to save lives. Torah commands us to build a bannister around a flat roof to ensure people do not fall off. Maimonides extends this to mean we must take all actions necessary to prevent foreseeable risks. Aruch, we are also taught about how much risk one should take to save a life. A person is not required to put their life in definite danger to save another, but where the danger is only possible, we are encouraged to genuinely reflect on the degree of risk and not be overly cautious in our approach. What does this mean? Flooding back to our usual lives is a risk we can see coming – we know this is likely to lead to more infections, so we must do something to prevent this. There is a risk to continuing our distanced way of living, but this risk does not seem overwhelming.

We have made it this far, and while disruption may occur, we are very likely to see society continue to evolve and adapt. In Reform Judaism, we have had a very similar dilemma around these High Holy Days. There is something lost by keeping our distance, but we believe in our ability as a community to adapt and find alternative ways to have a meaningful connection while being able to protect our vulnerable members. We have opened our doors to all who want to connect safely in our most intensely spiritual time of year. I think our communities show how it is possible to adapt and thrive to keep others safe, even when that seems difficult to achieve. ordered by court order to be paid, or that they are paying prior to orders being made. There is a lot of confusion, which I hope to clarify. If you have a court order requiring you to pay X to your spouse, you must continue to do so. However, if you have such a change of financial circumstances that you do not have the ability to meet the order, then you should firstly; (a) try to agree with your ex-spouse that there should be a reduction of the amount, either permanently or for a short period, or (b) try to agree to terminate the payments, or (c) in some cases agree to pay out the maintenance order altogether by means of paying a lump sum to “capitalise the maintenance”. If your spouse does not

The approach to these cases must be the application of common sense and carefully thought out legal advice.

Dear Joanne Owing to events this year, it might be easy to forget your obligations to file a tax return for 2019/20 by midnight on 31 January 2021. The coronavirus pandemic and subsequent economic crisis has caused chaos with businesses up and down the country, most of which closed entirely during April. The government has introduced several unprecedented measures to help them with the crisis, including deferring some key dates and deadlines involving self-assessment. One of the biggest temporary measures, certainly for sole traders and partnerships, was the self-employed income support scheme (SEISS), which offered grants based on trading profits. The use of

the term ‘grants’ suggests they might be tax-free money from the government, but they are taxable at your marginal rate if you were lucky enough to be covered by the scheme, and should be reported on your self-assessment tax return. Emergency coronavirus measures gave the option to defer the July payment on account until 31 January 2021. The amount you need to pay is an estimate based on your earnings from 2018/19. If you earned more than you did in 2018/19, a further balancing payment will be due on 31 January 2021 in respect of the 2019/20 tax year. If the tax year to 5 April 2021 is likely to be less, particularly owing to the coronavirus, future payments on account can also be reviewed and reduced.
