The lighter side

Summer / Welcome

Brigit Grant’s little bit of this and little bit of that...

Brigit@jewishnews.co.uk

Where there’s a will, there’s OY VEY NOT THE USUAL SUMMER SUPPLEMENTas the following pages of online shopping and takeaways reveal, but there is nothing ‘usual’ about now, including the vocabulary. Mine has certainly grown in four months as I initially confused ‘Furlough’ (a 17th century Dutch word –verlof) with ‘furlong’ as in acreage, which probably makes me a covidiot. But it’s not easy with neologisms being constantly fired, such as Covexit (strategy for exiting lockdown), Zoom-bombing (online gatecrashing) and ‘quaranteams’, which you can work out for yourself. Left ‘unmuted’ grandparents who once linked Apple to honey are now slumped on sofas in front of screens unbeknowingly heckling barmitzvahs. Trust me it’s hard not to laugh when – “There’s my tatala!” – is yelled during the Haftorah.

As the weeks passed and Muntjacs were spotted in Sainsburys, going further than Borehamwood to shop was not allowed. Yes, I’d have preferred Bermuda, but I bet they don’t have a Hadar supermarket with staff offering gloves and masks to customers. Much like those exciting stores one visits overseas, this kosher store in Edgware has sweets, snacks, soup mixes and cereals not seen elsewhere. Stocked with more than 10,000 well-presented products, including fresh fruit

and vegetables, Hadar also has Sushi Haven, and as one who could live on raw fish, the seal in me would always select Hadar given a choice. Another great local discovery was Be Fruitful, which is hidden away in Glengall Road in Edgware. Out walking the dog for some distance, I spotted the fruit, veg and flower selection by chance, but drove back to load up. Fresher than most supermarkets, Be Fruitful sells rainbow tomatoes, mini courgettes, blooming chilli plants an,d with plans to create a full growing garden centre at the rear, it’s a real find and so ‘cov-enient’.

That might be a neologism too far, but Be Fruitful prompted me to Be Mindful of Covid acronyms as I accidentally messaged WTF when I meant to say I was WFH (working from home)!

Put a RING on it HAD I KNOWN ABOUT BROOKLYN BECKHAM’S engagement, it could have been the focus of the simcha pages. It’s hard to imagine the lavish simcha Brooklyn’s future billionaire father-in-law, Nelson Peltz, will make after spending £800,000 on his sons’ barmitzvahs, but should he have any concerns about the shidduch, David has the credentials as his Jewish grandfather, the late Joseph West, took the footballer to shul and Posh and Becks had matching Hebrew’beloved’ tattoos, until she had hers removed. She is still his beloved, but let’s hope bride-to-be Nicole feels the same way, as Victoria must be banking on designing the wedding gown as the engagement dress is her summer collection. For the ‘do’ California-based Mindy Weiss must be a contender, as she helped Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi and several Kardashians. As for the cake? Well, Oprah Winfrey’s fav, Israeli master chef Ron Ben-Israel is the master of good taste – which is not true of the groom, who bought a £250,000 engagement ring as thousands are losing their jobs. This reminded me of the late comic genius Joan Rivers, who in 1984 mocked designer Elizabeth Emanuelle’s ‘small’ engagement ring in an ITV show. “You accepted that and you’re Jewish?” cackled Joan.. “I wouldn’t give that ring to an Arab!” Joan could not say the same to Nicole. Mazeltov to all.

Mann meals

I’m no cook and 98 meals a week is too much like a full-time job, so hats off to Sarah Yeager at Louis Mann & Son Ltd, who not only works at the butchers, but blogs and shares recipes. Louis Mann delivered to Liverpool, Spain, Ibiza and the Greek Islands during lockdown and I considered disguising myself as a schnitzel to go too... but I stayed back to make Sarah’s turkey burger with Asian-style salad, which she says “keeps ‘starving’ teenagers full for at least 45 minutes!” Get this recipe and more at www.louismann.

More mazeltov!

To my dear friend, Shtisel producer Dikla Barkai, who finally posted news that series 3 is underway – with masked proof. It could not be a day too soon.

DEMOCRACY

The Summerhouse

Ring the dinner bell. We now have the freedom to eat out or order in. Louisa Walters has some tasty options

F

or our first foray back into the world of eating out, we went to The Summerhouse in Maida Vale. Visored hosts greeted us warmly, asked us to apply hand sanitiser and showed us to our table via a one-way route around the restaurant. Tables were well spaced apart and separated by shoulder-height (once seated) perspex screens. They are like subtitles – after 10 minutes, you don’t notice them. Waiting staff were all masked. Cutlery is brought when you order – with little sachets of antibacterial wipes and they don’t pour the wine or the water, but the menu, food, service and ambience are every bit as good as they ever were. www.thesummerhouse.co

e waited eagerly for it to open, and then it did, and just two days later we were in lockdown and it had to close… but last week it reopened with strict hygiene and distancing measures in place! SOYO Diner (kosher) on Golders Green Road is THE place to go for burgers, rotisserie chicken, fried chicken and all the sides. Yes, of course there are onion rings. There are hearty salads and pasta dishes too, plus amazing desserts such as black chocolate cake and diner-style ice cream sundaes. Upstairs is a large 80-seater event space, for when we can party. But in the meantime, sit downstairs and tuck in. (Open throughout the ‘nine days’ with a fish menu.) www.soyodiner.co.uk

AW Cafe in Mill Hill dishes up consistently good, tasty, inventive food, and for summer they have added new dishes – chicken lollipops (gluten-free) are lollipopshaped drumsticks in a tasty mildly spicy coating. Paneer chilli packs a bit of punch and honey veg is a sweet and savoury slim latke with grated vegetables. All the other faves are still available and the front of this lovely colourful place is open on warm days. www.bawcafe.co.uk

elamina in Marylebone has taken every measure possible to make the team and guests feel safe. These include greater table spacing, staff temperature readings and mask-wearing, rigorous hygiene and social distancing controls, including new ‘contact light’ service procedures. If that’s not enough to get you in, then maybe dishes such as cod chermoula on dill yoghurt and Israeli couscous with roasted artichokes and wild za’atar will. www.delaminamarylebone.co.uk

Trattoria Gloria

BOOK IT

One good thing to come out of the new measures is that many no-reservations restaurants have changed their policy. Barrafina tapas bars in Coal Drops Yard, Dean Street and Covent Garden are all taking reservations. So are flamboyant Italian Trattoria Gloria in Shoreditch and its sister restaurant Circolo

Popolare in Fitzrovia. Best of all, Dishoom now takes dinner bookings in its Shoreditch, King’s Cross and Carnaby Street sites. www.barrafina.co.uk; www.bigmamma group.com; www.dishoom.com

ust before lockdown, chef Jake Finn’s plans to open a restaurant had to be shelved. He quickly set up a home delivery service, but this isn’t a regular takeaway... this a highly skilled chef prepping dishes for you to cook or finish at home. We tried the marinated salmon fillets, which come with instructions to smoke on cedar wood planks on the barbecue. Wonderfully moist and tender, we had them with quinoa, roasted peppers and courgettes in a tangy tomato dressing and jumbo asparagus in shallot vinaigrette with crumbled feta. I also sampled a superb Italian lasagne with sticky caramelised onions. Hands down the best food I had during lockdown. Dishes from £15. Jake Finn www.chefjakefinn.com

oing out doesn’t have to mean going to a restaurant, and my friend Louise Cowan’s The Picnic Hunter’s Club is a new venture from The Gingerline, which is well known for innovative immersive dining events. Using an app that you download onto your phone, this is a treasure hunt, at the end of which you get a delicious picnic to enjoy. The treasure hunt around Clissold Park is good fun and a way to build up an appetite. The picnic box (meat/veg/ vegan available) includes a cocktail and three courses of tasty treats. www.gingerline.co.uk

ow that we’re all working from home, there’s no excuse not to give breakfast the attention it deserves. Bluebelles, in Mill Hill, has launched a new brunch delivery. Fanned avo with toasted seeds on a charcoal bap was a winner and we enjoyed cute eggy pots – shakshuka in one and spinach and crème fraîche in another. Fantastic banana bread with toffee sauce, gluten-free courgette and avo cake with freshly-squeezed orange juice is delicious. https://bluebellesofportobello.com

Summer / Sri Lankan cuisine

NEW FACE

New Food Rather than wait for lockdown to ease, one chef stepped up to the plate

K

Salmon tataki is beautifully plated

USHAN MARTHELIS did not waste a moment during lockdown – and responded to the call for cuisine to spice up the misery. The Sri Lankanborn chef, who worked with Gordon Ramsay, has always catered for large gatherings, but delivering ready-prepared meals across London had not been in his remit until now, and boy did he rise to the challenge. Hundreds of BBQ packages comprised of a range of perfectly-seasoned meats, poultry and fish with zingy salad selections arrived on doorsteps on time and always tasty. Cooked or uncooked for those who like to light up the grill, Kushan could – and still can – do either option, but the demand for his catering skills for bigger groups, combined with his restaurant experience has encouraged him to now do functions on a full-time basis.

Kushan prepares healthy meals such as curried salmon with confit banana flower

The result is Cacao Catering & Events and, although government restrictions for parties, weddings and all other celebrations means a maximum of 30 guests, Kushan is still as inventive with his menu and can even provide a bespoke Sri Lankan banquet incorporating such dishes as cashew and baby pea curry with crispy fried onion; confit banana flower with curried salmon and coriander oil or potato tempered tuna fish cutlet.

As Kushan is also a chocolatier and able to craft a pair of heels or a fruit-laden bar as part of the dessert selection, he appears to have all bases covered, be it for a dinner party or a garden brunch. The biggest plus is his customer service and he and his staff are all smiles – as you will be when you taste the food.

Davidov jewllery

hile Victoria Beckham was being berated for furloughing staff and Cath Kidston was announcing the closure of all stores, industrious women who own boutiques b outiques were creating runways in their shops and gardens and just kept selling. Summoning up their inner Delevingne to model spring/ summer collections was not something they had done before but, out of necessity, they appeared on camera to showcase dresses, separates and even handbags. Katie Solomons and her sister Lucy were determined Harpers, the shop their mother Karol opened 48 years ago in Edgware, would not be toppled by the Covid-19 crisis. “My mother, who comes from Sunderland, reminded me that the family fashion business stayed open in the north-east throughout the Second World War,” says Katie. “That gave us the impetus to continue and, although I’m far from tech savvy, I started the first Instagram feed in my garden and we’ve learnt and improved on the job.” Harpers has a range of sizes and styles to suit all ages and shop assistant Karen, together with Lucy, modelled the clothing, delivered it to buyers and then steam-cleaned any returns. This

system is ongoing, even though the shop is now open to customers by appointment basis. “We have new summer stock arriving all the time,” says Katie, who is able to buy continually as she lives in Paris, but will be in London on 30 July for a special Harpers’ presentation with her mother and sister. Lili Grace,, also in Edgware, became a family affair during lockdown, with the children of owners Sasha Haralambous and Linda Marks doing deliveries and even modelling on camera. Sasha realised Instagram’s potential when everyone ensconced at home declared tracksuit dependence. “I knew we had plenty to sell but no customers to serve, so suggested we do a Facebook Live featuring tracksuits with a 25 precent lockdown discount,”says Sasha – and this wise decision sent sales through the roof. Now the Lili Grace fashion showcase at 12.30pm every Tuesday and Friday has travelled beyond HA8 to a global audience of new customers in LA, Australia and New Zealand. “It has completely transformed our business,” says Sasha, who went through dark days when her husband and business partner Linda both contracted Covid-19, but are thankfully now well. Daliah Hearn and Karen Lewis,, who run the home-based The Wardrobe Edit,, also got their pitch for summer tees, vests, joggers and dresses down to a fine art on Facebook and, with no changing rooms allowed, their business model works well. So well that after spotting Daliah in a white soft coat and star vest, I ordered both, just as I did when I saw the Lin, the savvy owner of The Closet in Potters Bar with a bag that will pass as designer, but at £29 is totally affordable. The danger is being tempted by more when I collect it.

STONES UNTURNED Lockdown gave jeweller Natasha Davidov the chance to introduce the Aska maternity bracelet for women who want to monitor their baby’s movement without constant visits to the hospital. The Aska still matters to her, but she is also back making jewellery from precious stones. Every necklace and bracelet, if not bespoke, has its own back story and as a voracious reader, literature is key. With the tragic loss of her mother in the past month, Natasha, who is from Hungary, has been reading the Torah, so anything is possible with her jewellery now. www.davidovlondon.com

A REAL GEM

Black skirt from Suzy D

After months of tirelessly creating and developing their own fashion brand, friends Gabby Lyons and Emma Samuels refused to let the drastic circumstances prevent them launching GEM. What they didn’t expect was for their first collection to sell out in a matter of days, which meant they had to furiously restock to keep up with customer demand and preorders. Made from end of roll fabrics in various prints, GEM dresses come in three designs with an emphasis towards sustainability. “Even our bags are made from leftover fabric and, where possible, clothing is pre-ordered to avoid ‘dead stock’,” explains Emma, a London College of Fashion business graduate with 20 years of industry experience. Gabby studied at Central Saint Martins before launching her brand Studd, which appeared on a Vogue cover and was stocked in more than 100 stores worldwide and worn by Britney Spears, Madonna and The Spice Girls. The GEM founders have also collaborated with renowned milliner, Benoit Missolin, to create matching headbands using a selection of dress fabrics, so you only need to bring shoes. www.gem-london.com; www.instagram.com/gemlondonofficial

Beauty

TRIALS FOR THE TIME

I

won’t lie. Writing about beauty products when so many are in hideous situations feels awkward, but with more time at home and my aesthetician bored in Cheshire, I’ve been searching for Botox substitutes for you, dear readers. Thus I’m happy to report that, after weeks of using NEWA, the non-invasive home-use skin tightening device, it has seriously helped. I balked at the price at first (£349), but four months on, with zero injectibles, it has more than covered its cost and seriously tightened my chin in a way no aesthetician can. The brow crease has stayed faint, too, and as I start the third tube of lift activator gel, it’s obvious the 3DEEP radio frequency technology works. Just 15 minutes each day across the face and neck builds collagen and adds elasticity, both of which deplete rapidly during menopause. When I do finally get Botox, the NEWA will maintain the effect, so

Brigit Grant has some kick-start suggestions

I’m delighted Jewish News readers can use this link www. newabeauty.co.uk/products/ clinic-exclusive-package or call 0800 085 5148 to get a NEWA for the special price of £299 using code NEWA011. I’ve also sought out holiday tan replacement products and DR HAUSCHKA TRANSLUCENT BRONZING TINT (£19, www.drhauschka. co.uk). The slight tan I got while it was sunny did not last and this liquid has been a blessing as it is a medicinal moisturiser with anthyllis and witch hazel, which softens blemishes. I generally wake ashenfaced, and in minutes, the tint gives a genuinely sunkissed look. I’ve ditched powder blush for a MARTHA HILL CREAM in a soft natural pink (£4.50, www. beautynaturals.com). Powder on mature skin looks too doll-like and

sinks, so this hint of colour looks more youthful. I’ve also tried LASH PRINCESS FALSE LASH EFFECT MASCARA WATERPROOF by Essence (£3.29, www.feelunique.com) for long, lean lashes. I’ve cried a lot recently, and this mascara has helped to maintain dignity and the conic brush is professional standard. My daughter is a fan of Primark’s mascara and a sneaky trial delivered a silky finish and no clumps, so for £3 it’s also a bargain. Lockdown really has been all about my live-in teen and no school, as well as an opportunity for the lads to try new anti-pimple products such as FUNDERM WAS BAD gel (£35, www.funderm.com), which has Dead Sea water as one of its main ingredients. Dead Sea reduces infection and stops ‘angry’ spots and boys report improvement. I wish my teen had asked before trying BAEVAC (£24.99,

www.silkybae.com), a microdermabrasion head which, in the wrong hands, can mark skin rather than rid it of shallow scars, blocked pores and fine lines. Basically, it replicates microdermabrasion with a diamond tip to exfoliate skin and stimulate production, while removing dirt that causes acne and blackheads. Note to self: do not leave trial products within reach of teen. The same teen decided to soak in a bath of COCONUT AND HIBISCUS ILLUMINATING BODY WASH (£10.99, www.lookfantastic. com) and loved the coconut oil with vitamins E and K. Maybe I’ll get to try it.

Event management / Summer

THE SHOW MUST GO ON

With no celebrations for months, now’s the time to start planning WA CARR & SON

No one could accuse Max Hermet of letting the grass grow during lockdown. As the owner of WA Carr & Son, an event hire and management company, he was delivering much-needed catering equipment to St Mary’s Hospital. Now he is back in action with his team, setting up spectacular bell tents and inflatable outdoor cinemas in the private gardens of those who want to hold a small-scale simcha or just keep the mood upbeat over summer. Hosting a night in a tent with a film screening is exactly what the kids want in the absence of a holiday or camp, and Max has also been using his skills to cover external space for those who need it, such as football clubs, pubs and cafés. British weather being what it is means that gazebos are essential, particularly at a BBQ, so consider the options.

For anyone also thinking about an event, WA Carr & Son has not just got marquees (including one on three metre legs) but everything one requires, from table settings and furniture to décor and props, as the company has skilled carpenters and even welding machines on-site. “Event management was a natural progression for us,” says Max, who can now organise every aspect of an event, including the caterers, band, DJ, flowers, photo booths, balloons and knives and forks. “On-the-day management is so important as we know everything, from the layout of the room to what plugs and generators are needed. We don’t work on massive margins, but we are the first ones in and the last to leave.” www.wacarrandson.co.uk

IN THE HOUSE

WITH A DIPLOMA IN CORDON BLEU and a little business experience, Beverley Bersch launched her own kosher catering company named after her late grandfather, Toby Levy. What he would have made of the past months is hard to know, but his granddaughter is ready to help would-be celebrants plan for the future. Over the past 30 years, Beverley has fed a prestigious list of royals, MPs and celebrities, and all the food is prepared and cooked on the day on site. Alongside being the designated kosher caterer at the House of Commons, the House of Lords, Clarence House, St James’ Palace and Lambeth Palace, Toby Levy works at most of London’s five-star hotels, and their vast menu means everyone is catered for, including those with food intolerances. Even other caterers use Toby Levy for their own functions – and you can’t get a better recommendation than that! www.tobylevy.com or call 020 8505 2725

WOULDN’T IT BE

Luvli

FORMED OUT OF A FRIENDSHIP BETWEEN NEIGHBOURS, Luvli Events was founded in 2016 by Lisa Kirsch and Stacey Waterman-Coleman who started out by simply adding finishing touches to friends’ celebrations. This quickly evolved into a business with innovative, bespoke and themed design at its heart. Not surprisingly, the women – who have backgrounds in art and design – spent their time indoors thinking up new themes and even got active, providing personalised lecturns for bar and batmitzvahs. When the new normal becomes fully workable, Lisa and Stacey will return to creating original and bespoke theming, room styling, centrepieces and accessories for clients’ parties, simchas and dinner parties. Candle lighting displays, giant LED centrepieces and party boards are all within their remit and available now. www.luvlievents.com or call 020 8432 0789

MI CASA

REMEMBER WHEN YOU STOOD SHOULDER TO SHOULDER in an open stadium watching a band? Well, that was then. Now, you don’t have to lean on anyone or scramble to the front to be able to see, because the music comes directly to you. Yes, handsome young folk with fantastic voices will perform in your garden so that you don’t have to turn up the speakers or attempt a solo yourself. Go to Facebook to see how the AhMen a capella group brought joy to a birthday in lockdown, or how Craig Kent brought his vocals to a Borehamwood cul de sac. There is even a high brow option, with The Doorstep Duo, who sing opera – and their rendition in a care home of We’ll Meet Again is eye-watering stuff. Levi Levin of Ah Men even offers a digital barmitzvah service with remote and manned cameras to bring the broadcast and entertainment up to scratch. Summer / Drink up

With hostelries finally open and pub crawls happening, there are many reasons to head out for a drink. Kedem’s summer wine list is a reason to stay in or simply show up with a bottle in a friend’s garden. Years of tasting as wholesalers puts Kedem in the prize position of knowing the best available wines. They don’t sell to the public, but isn’t it cool to walk into an off-licence and impress them with your choice? Cheers for that, Kedem! CHATEAU MAIME

SAINTE BEATRICE INSTANT B

A delightful blend of grape varieties found in the south of France, Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault. The complimentary features of these grapes work particularly well in a rose wine. Côtes de Provence is the largest appellation of the Provence wine region and produces the majority of the region’s rosé wine. Beautiful colour, very pleasant nose, well balanced; some fruit, tannins and acidity. For lighter fare and a good cocktail wine.

The entry-level wine from Château Roubine, which shows their ability at making quality rosé at every price point. Very light pink in colour. On the nose, some freshly picked strawberries and cherries as well as citrus pith. Light in body with notes of tart raspberries and red currants as well as a hint of peach, refreshing mouthfeel, with nice minerals, sour cherries and red berries, medium acidity, as well as a pleasant juicy finish.

RRP £30.99

CHATEAU ROUBINE

Very bright, pale salmon pink colour with delicate aromas of spring flowers, fresh red berries and stone fruits. Light in body, it is a vibrant rosé, very refined and delicate on the palate with flavours of sour cherries, raspberries, fresh white peaches and tangerines as well as chalky and racy mineral notes. The finish is moderately long with refreshing acidity.

RRP £17.99

IGT COSTA TOSCANA ROSATO

Full of fruit and sourness that collects the wine and accompanies the whole tasting. A long finish with a touch of light bitterness and red grapefruit flavours. The must went through a long cold fermentation, and finally the various plots were mixed up to form the final blend. Well balanced. A flowered, sweeping nose of strawberry, peach and fresh green apple.

FLAM ROSÉ

Fresh nose of summer and stone fruits. Light to medium in weight with good acidity. The finish is refreshing. A well-balanced, quality and fruit forward rosé.

RRP £28.99

CARMEL APPELLATION ROSE

ROTHSCHILD LES LAURIERS ROSE

Bright candy pink in color, with on the nose and palate citrus fruit, strawberry and cherry. Light in body with excellent balance between the fruit and acidity as well as a touch of minerality, giving this wine some welcome complexity. Low in alcohol, refreshing and quite pleasantly drinking.

RRP £16.99

RRP £25.99

Light peach pink in colour, with subtle notes of fresh flowers, red berries and stone fruits on both the nose and palate, as well as nice minerality. Great acidity and balance on the moderately long finish.

TABOR ADAMA ROSE

Salmon towards candy pink in colour. On the nose, aromas of strawberries, ripe grapefruit and cherries. Almost medium in body, slightly off-dry, with on the palate ripe cherries, raspberries and strawberries followed by pink grapefruit, medium-plus acidity, with a hint of pleasant, balancing sweetness rising towards the refreshing and moderately long finish. Delightful rose.

RRP £17.99

DALTON ESTATE ROSE

Is a blush wine made from shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and barbera. The red grapes are brought into the winery at the end of the summer and after crushing allowed to sit on their skins for three hours before pressing, resulting in a light pink juice. This pink juice was cold fermented for three weeks in order to preserve as much of the character of the wine as possible Fermentation was stopped early by freezing so that some residual sugar would remain. This wine is an incredibly aromatic wine, with the essence of bright strawberry, rose pedal and red grapefruit. The wine is slightly off dry and its bright acidity enhances the length of the wine’s fruit driven palate.

RRP £15.49

RRP £18.49 RRP £20.99

CHATEAU ROUBINE LA VIE EN ROSE A blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Cinsault and 10% Syrah. Bright salmon pink in colour, with on the nose fresh cherries, strawberries and peaches with subtle hints of honeysuckle and minerals. Light in body, with fruity notes of ripe red berries and stone fruit, hints of stoney minerals on the mid-palate and perfect, medium-plus acid structure that balances well the ripeness of the fruit, carrying the wine throughout a refreshing finish with a touch of blood orange. Delightful.

RRP £20.99

CARMEL SELECTED ROSÉ

The Carmel Selected Rosé is a new addition to the Carmel Selected series. This Judean Hills Semi-dry blush rose wine is aromatic, refreshing, light and fruity. Produced with 40% Grenache, 30% Tempranillo, 30% Zinfandel, this wine should be served chilled. Pair with cheese, fish or light snacks. This is a drink-now wine.

RRP £12.49

ROSÉ DU CASTEL

Nose of ripe raspberries and cherries. A little bit sweet with red fruit and candy notes, medium acidity and ah of minerality. Good QPR (quality-price ratio) for those who like their rosé slightly off-dry.

RRP £28.99

Getting Away/ Summer

Where To Now?

We’re not all going on a summer holiday – but you might want to think about the options “HE WHO WOULD TRAVEL HAPPILY MUST TRAVEL LIGHT,” SAID THE LITTLE PRINCE AUTHOR ANTOINE DE ST EXUPERY. It’s unlikely any of us will be truly happy holidaying this summer, or light considering the weight of Covid worry. Yet we’ve earned a break – and though some countries have yet to be granted ‘air bridge’ privileges, as the virus peaks and falls, things change. We are all waiting for Israel to open fully, without quarantine restrictions, but thought you might enjoy looking at places to go now (with or without a mask) and in the future.

TURKEY

Hillside Beach Club, a five-star resort in Fethiye, Turkey, has made many logistical changes in order to welcome families, including table service in place of buffet-style dining and social distancing in communal areas. But the entertainment team are in place for childcare and evening shows, staff are primed for assisting guests and the smell of pines is ever pervasive. From the balcony

of one of the spacious rooms staggered down the densely wooded hills there is a view worth travelling to see. Turkey has been open since 12 June and on arrival you will receive a medical evaluation for coronavirus symptoms, including temperature checks and depending on results, a Covid test. www.hillsidebeachclub.com Flights with www.easyjet.com to Dalaman

MALLORCA

Zafiro Palace Alcidia

Mallorca has always been one of our favourites and the most likely place to bump into friends from Radlett. If you don’t have your own pad, the Zafiro Palace, in a private zone in Port Alcudia is reliably good. Only ten minutes on foot from the nearest beach and a five-minute drive to historic Alcudia town with its cafés, and shops, the hotel is family friendly and spacious with a garden of towering palms. The several bars and 12 pools are being carefully managed and although the gym and

Zen Spa are not currently open, they may very well be by the time you go. If you love low-rise properties, the 369 suites with glass-fronted balconies will impress as will the food at the themed à la carte restaurants which include a sushi bar. www.zafirohotels.com Flights to Palma with easyjet,on arrival you must provide the Spanish Ministry of Health with mandatory contact information and any history of exposure to COVID-19 48 hours prior to travel.

Summer / Getting away PORTUGAL After months in lockdown, a fortnight of self-isolation on return from Portugal is not a problem with so many of us continuing to work from home and getting groceries delivered. As it’s only a matter of time before Boris Johnson gives the Algarve a green light for an air bridge, with such low prices it’s worth booking. For anyone who wants to avoid shared space in a big hotel, a quiet stay in a beautiful farmhouse in Bouliequeme is the answer. The hosts at Casa De Mondo have self-isolated since early March and sterilise the property on a daily basis. With only three double rooms with kitchens and private terraces set around the pool and verdant gardens, six guests feels comfortably safe. The beaches – quiet and clean – are a 15-minute drive away, and there are restaurants nearby. Casa De Mondo is the perfect home away from home right now and ridiculously affordable. www.casademondo.com /+44 7903 525941.
