Westminster rejects Holocaust memorial

...but government remains ‘implacably’ behind landmark project

The Government remains “implacably” committed to building a Holocaust memorial and learning centre near Parliament, communities secretary Robert Jenrick said this week, despite Westminster City Council unanimously voting to oppose it.

A final decision will be made by the housing minister – currently Esther McVey – in the summer. It will follow the publication of a report by the planning inspector after a public inquiry – to which Tuesday evening’s vote will be submitted.

Jenrick said in a statement: “This year marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. As fewer survivors remain

with us it is more important than ever for us to come together to remember the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered during the Holocaust and all other victims of Nazi persecution.”

He added: “The Government remains implacably committed to the construction of the Holocaust Memorial and Education Centre right at the heart of our democracy, beside our national parliament to ensure that future generations never forget. No one, whether in national or local government should shirk their duty to deliver on the promise of this memorial, and the government certainly will not.”

Council deliberations – which ran for close to three hours – saw councillors on the planning committee unanimously oppose the memorial in Victoria Tower Gardens. The Grade-II* listed park falls partly within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Westminster.

Councillors warned the application would harm heritage assets, obstruct views of the Buxton Memorial and the lowers parts of the Palace of Westminster, cause the loss of open, public green space and incur possible environmental damage.

Speaking out against the application, Labour councillor David Boothroyd welled up, as he hit out against the council’s “iniquitous position … [of ] having to decide whether to disappoint people who are making points about their local park with perfect sincerity, or to refuse the Holocaust memorial centre within a fortnight of Holocaust Memorial Day.” Conservative councillor Robert Rigby, chairman of planning, said the council would have “very likely” accepted plans to build a “much smaller” memorial in the park.

Stressing the role of remembrance, Rigby said that Westminster City Council is behind the “principle” of a memorial to the Holocaust in central London but cited heritage concerns.

“We absolutely understand the emotion and the depth of feeling that this issue engenders, and we think it is right that the secretary of state will make the final decision.”

Smeeth: Labour’s silence a disgrace Former Labour MP Ruth Smeeth tore into deputy leadership hopefuls at a hustings event in Manchester, claiming some had dismissed her concerns over antisemitism and shouted at her, writes Jack Mendel.

The former Stoke-On-Trent North politician confronted the four contenders to succeed Tom Watson, accusing them of being “silent” on the issue, asking them why Jewish women “have to lead this fight by themselves”.

Sat in the front row of the hustings, pictured in footage posted on Twitter, she called out hopefuls Dawn Butler, and Richard Burgon, who refused to sign up to the Board of Deputies’ 10 pledges on antisemitism. Dr Rosena Allin-Khan, Ian Murray and Angela Rayner are also standing. She confronted them, saying: “You know I stood up at every Parliamentary Labour Party meeting and called out antisemitism and asked for help, and I didn’t get any.

“In fact, there have been times where I was dismissed, where colleagues, including some of the people standing for election, shouted at me in my office

for raising those issues.

“And the idea it should be Jewish women who have to lead this fight by themselves – because that’s what happened, with notable exceptions – is simply a disgrace.

“So I’m very interested in knowing where people were. I’m very interested in knowing why you were silent.”

She was lauded on Twitter for her bravery, with Luisa Attfield, co-youth and students officer at Jewish Labour Movement (JLM), saying she was an “absolute hero” for “calling out those who left Jewish women to fight alone”.

JLM national organiser Rebecca Filer said the clip was a reminder Smeeth is “one of the bravest people in the Labour Party”.

The MP lost her seat at the 2019 General Election, placing full blame for the “disaster” on outgoing leader Jeremy Corbyn for his failure to tackle antisemitism concerns and his Brexit stance.

She urged “everyone in the Jewish community to join the Jewish Labour Movement in the coming days, to have a voice in the leadership election”, which would be vital to “change the culture” on fighting Jew hatred.

PARTY KICKS OUT 25 MEMBERS IN ONE DAY The Labour Party expelled 25 individuals in a single day over allegations of antisemitism, writes Mathilde Frot.

The Labour Party, which is being investigated by the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, has not provided specific details about the individuals it hasexpelled.

Some are thought to have been expelled by the party’s governing body, the National Executive Committee, using new expulsion powers that were approved at last year’s Labour conference.

Others were expelled by the Labour Party’s disciplinary body, the National Constitutional Committee, under a new procedural guideline in which the body hears cases related to social media posts on paper, rather than in person.

A Labour Party source said: “As a result of significant reforms made since Jennie Formby became general-

secretary, our procedures are more effective than ever and more robust than any other political party, and those who engage in antisemitism are being swiftly removed from our ranks.”

A report released by the Labour Party last month revealed 45 members were expelled from the party over antisemitism last year, a staggering increase from the previous year, when there were only 10 expulsions.

The report, hailed by the party as “the greatest display of transparency”, drew criticism from the Jewish Labour Movement.

A spokesperson for the Jewish Labour Party affiliate said at the time: “After years of acting in bad faith and administering a broken system that fosters institutional anti-Jewish racism, the Labour Party should not be allowed to judge its own processes.”  Lisa Nandy, page 18

A north London Orthodox Jewish safety patrol group has said the majority of incidents it responds to are on behalf of non-Jews, as it recorded a sharp fall in the number of antisemitic incidents last year.

Shomrim, in Stamford Hill, which is staffed by Charedi volunteers, recorded 159 antisemitic incidents in 2019 compared to 282 in the same area in 2018, a decrease of 44 percent.

Volunteers said they “facilitated and assisted” in the arrest of 11 suspects, some of whom are awaiting trial, while claiming success in assisting the Metropolitan Police in prosecuting and convicting nine antisemitic offenders.

BRITISH GROUPS AGAINST ‘SHAM’ PLAN British Jewish groups joined an unprecedented international coalition of Jewish organisations united against Donald Trump’s proposed Middle East peace deal, writes Adam Decker.

Yachad, Jewish Labour Movement and Habonim Dror joined the UK branches of organisations such as New Israel Fund, Meretz and Rabbis for Human Rights this week in a first-ofits-kind intervention to oppose the deal, which would see Israeli sovereignty over settlements.

The British groups made up some of the 25 liberal Jewish signatory organisations, which

include well-known names such as J Street in the US. Geographically, they span Europe, South Africa, Australia, Canada and Central America.

They called on world leaders to reject Trump’s “one-sided” deal because it does not offer the Palestinians “independence in a sovereign state” and runs counter to “Jewish values”. In an open letter, they said: “We call on Jews who wish to see a just peace... between two sovereign states to reject this sham deal.” US ambassador’s warning, page 14

Changes to be made to Palestinian textbooks The British government has said “changes will be made” to Palestinian textbooks from September, following a recent meeting in London.

News came from Middle East Minister Dr Andrew Murrison in response to a question on Palestinian education in the House of Commons late week.

Describing “the active role we have taken to ensure no inappropriate material is used”, he said: “I spoke recently to the Palestinian education minister.

After a UK call for action, the European Union agreed to lead an independent review of text-

books. This is ongoing, as is the British government funding for Palestinian education.

“In the last year, UK aid has supported 26,000 children to go to school in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and is also helping to educate 500,000 Palestinian refugees across the Middle East,” a DFID spokesperson said.

“UK aid does not pay for textbooks in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. We are working with the Palestinian Authorities on a thorough review of its books to make sure they do not incite violence.”

BLAIR: CHANGE STRATEGY FOR STATEHOOD Tony Blair has said the Palestinians need a “fundamental shift in strategy” if they are ever to achieve statehood, arguing that sympathy votes do not win sovereignty.

The ex-Prime Minister, who now chairs the Institute for Global Change, penned his thoughts in an opinion piece for Project Syndicate this week. “The Palestinians

don’t need a strategy for sympathy. They need a strategy for statehood, and their current path will not lead them to it,” he said.

“The resolutions, gestures of support, and rhetorical expressions of solidarity showered upon the Palestinians are the cheapest currency of diplomacy. In the real world they buy next to nothing.”

Blair said deep splits among the Palestinians were the major barrier, asking: “Even in an ideal environment, how could any negotiation succeed, given the current disarray in Palestinian politics?”

Labour hopefuls at JN hustings tonight The community’s only Labour leadership hustings takes place this evening, following a venue change after tickets sold out in under an hour.

The event features frontrunner Sir Keir Starmer, Rebecca Long-Bailey, Lisa Nandy and Emily Thornberry as they face off at Liberal Jewish Synagogue after demand outstripped capacity at JW3.

It is chaired by ITV’s political editor Robert Peston, and is organised by Jewish News, Jewish Labour Movement and Labour Friends of Israel.

The hustings is a key moment for contenders on their response to antisemitism in the party over the past four years, ahead of the forthcoming report from the Equalities and Human Rights Commission on the scourge.

JLM balloting for candidates begins The Jewish Labour Movement (JLM) has begun balloting members to nominate leadership and deputy leadership candidates for the party.

JLM will endorse candidates vying to replace Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and Tom Watson, who quit as deputy last year, leaving the post vacant.

The group, which refused to endorse the Labour Party at the 2019 general election, has been

critical of Corbyn’s handling of antisemitism allegations in the party. Balloting began on Monday evening and members have until 11am tomorrow to rank candidates.

The nomination process comes hot on the heels of Labour’s most catastrophic electoral defeat since 1935 and a campaign overshadowed by a deepening row over antisemitism.

The boards of both titles this week declared their intention to unite under a charitable trust to secure the financial future of both newspapers and transform into a modern print, digital and events brand.

The merger has been agreed in principle

However, completion and the signing of a legal agreement is still dependent on necessary funds being raised to support the move.

Should the merger be rubber stamped, both newspapers will continue to publish under one editorial and commercial team.

V A SENIOR Cabinet minister has told the JC they are “hopeful of action being taken” against a Conservative MP who spoke at a conference in Rome this week alongside European far-right speakers.

Daniel Kawczynski, the MP for Shrewsbury and Atcham, was among the 22 speakers to appear at the National Conservatism conference.

Participants at the two-day event included Marion Marechal, the niece of National Rally (formerly Front National) president Marine Le Pen, Hermann Tertsch, an MEP Under for the Spanish pressure: Vox party and Kawczynski

Mattias Karlsson, former leader of the far-right Swedish Democrats.

Other more mainstream speakers included Hungary’s nationalist PM Viktor Orban, Italy’s populist leader Matteo Salvini, and a Polish MEP from the Law and Justice Party.

Conservative MP Andrew Percy, co-chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group Against Antisemitism, attacked Mr Kawczynski’s decision to attend the conference as “wholly inappropriate.” It is understood that Mr Percy, who is Jewish, was one of a number

of Conservative MPs who have raised Mr Kawcyznski’s conduct with Tory party whips.

Mr Percy said he had written to “Daniel last week asking him not to attend, given the presence of politicians from the far-right.”

Asked for her response to Mr Kawczynski’s actions, Nicola Richards, Tory MP for West Bromwich East, said she was “concerned to learn this has happened”.

Mr Kawczynski described reaction to his attendance as “hysterical” and claimed he had gained approval to attend the conference in advance from the whips.

Social media abuse pushes hate incidents to record high

BY LEE HARPIN V THE NUMBER of antisemitic inci incidents in Britain reached the highest level on record in 2019, with a dramatic escalation of abuse on social media the single largest single factor in the rise.

The Community Security Trust recorded 1,805 antisemitic incidents caslast year — an increase on the 1,652 cas es in 2018.

This is the fourth year in a row in which CST has recorded a record number of antisemitic incidents and the second year in a row in which over 100 antisemitic incidents were logged every month.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said of the new figures: “It’s appalling that we have seen another increase of sickening abuse against the Jewish community.

“We need to do much more to tackle antisemitism and the intolerance this creates across society.

“As Home Secretary I am pushing for greater collaboration, both across government, policing, the courts and community groups, to remove this shameful stain on our society.”

CST Chief Executive David Delew added: “2019 was another difficult year for British Jews and it is no sur-

prise that recorded antisemitic incidents reached yet another high. It is clear that both social media and mainstream politics are places where antisemitism and racism need to be driven out, if things are to improve in the future.”

The continuing controversy over antisemitism in the Labour Party was, according to the charity, a key reason why February and December had the

highest monthly totals of reported incidents.

The general election in December — when 184 incidents were recorded — was preceded by Jewish community figures, most notably the Chief Rabbi, publicly voicing unprecedented concerns regarding Labour.

I’m immensely proud of the positive impact Jewish News has on our community and in the corridors of power.

Board of Deputies president Marie van der Zyl said on Tuesday: “We have repeatedly raised concerns about Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad’s antisemitic comments and his use of hateful tropes, which let down the people of Malaysia.”

“At our request, the Foreign Office has expressed concerns about this in Kuala Lumpur in the past and we hope the Foreign Secretary has made these points again on this visit and will continue to do so in future engagements with the country,” she added.

The Malaysian prime minister was previously condemned by Jewish groups – including the Anti-Defamation League – over public remarks.

He described Jews as “hook nosed” and pinned the blame for conflicts in the Middle East on Israel’s creation, the news wire Reuters reported in October 2018.

Speaking ahead of the trip, Raab said: “The region is also crucial to tackling climate change, so we’re looking forward to taking our relations to the next level.”

Bilateral trade between the UK and Malaysia is worth £5billion each year, according to the Foreign Office.

MUSEUM BOSS STEPS DOWN The Jewish Museum’s chief executive is to step down, amid the organisation’s withdrawal from Arts Council England’s National Portfolio as it plans “for a new direction”.

Withdrawal from the portfolio, from which the museum receives £220,000 per year until 2022, comes as the museum says it will “review its business model”.

The museum outlined “the same level of investment will be received from the Arts Council along with an additional £100,000”. It added that “extensive support” will also come from The National Lottery Heritage Fund while the museum looks at its “organisational structure over the

Israeli eyes UK tech hub An Israeli technology investor is considering opening a tech hub in London to develop digital companies after launching one in New York.

Speaking to Jewish News this week, Erel Margalit of Jerusalem Venture Partners (JVP) said a new London hub was “a definite possibility”, but that “there are also discussions with some major cities in Europe”, including Paris and Berlin.

“Before the Brexit vote, London was a no-brainer because of the large business ecosystem, the financial players and the internationality of the city,” he said.

“It is still very much a possibility, but a lot depends on the mood of Israeli and international companies as they consider Europe for their operations, whether they still see London as one of the key hotspots. I think they will.”

Asked whether he felt Israeli companies were going cold on the UK, he said: “I think that was the case a few years ago, with the Brexit vote, but now at least there’s clarity, that’s very important.

People are trying to cope with it.

“For a while, there was a possibility of an anti-Israel UK government, that was a worry, but now the government is very pro-Israel, and that’s a good thing.”

Margalit said investors were asking what appetite the UK government now has to push public-private partnerships, and in which areas.

“The question is how dynamic and hungry on the business side are some of the leaders? What kind of initiatives are they pushing? We were strongly

encouraged by the visit to Jerusalem of [Chancellor] Sajid Javid, if that’s going to be the tone.”

Actress and entrepreneur Gwyneth Paltrow attended JVP’s launch of the NYC Cyber Center last week, which backers hope will be a “launching pad” for innovative companies.

JVP has invested in more than 140 companies in Israel, the US and Europe since 1993, and Margalit used the launch event to talk to Paltrow about digital privacy and the #MeToo movement.

The new cyber centre is a 40,000-square-foot hub for start-ups specialising in cybersecurity, protecting big banks, insurers and other companies from hackers.

Margalit said many of the world’s top cybersecurity companies established themselves by protecting governments and major multinational institutions, but recognised that the focus was now on protecting digital rights and privacy.

Paltrow said new products and opportunities presented a “doubleedged sword”, asking: “How would we all live if we knew everything we did and said was public to the world? This raises a very interesting philosophical point.”

Turning to Paltrow’s outspoken stance on sexual harassment in Hollywood, Margalit said: “As an entrepreneur you have to be brave, but as a father of three daughters, and as a leader of a firm where half the partners are women, what you did in the #MeToo movement was very courageous and has had an effect on many people.”

HARRY POTTER GETS YIDDISH TRANSLATION The first edition of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in Yiddish has sold out in under 48 hours.

It was released in Yiddish by the Swedish publisher Olniansky Tekst Farlag on Friday and was translated

by Arun Viswanath. The 29-year-old is the son of an Indian-American father and Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath, author of the Comprehensive EnglishYiddish Dictionary. Her father was a professor of Yiddish at Columbia University. Yiddish is an official minority language in Sweden.

MP’S MUM ‘ASHAMED’ TO SPEAK ABOUT BELSEN The Conservative MP for Beckenham has revealed how his mother entered BergenBelsen with British Special Forces during the war, but never mentioned it until her deathbed because she was “ashamed”.

who also served as an intelligence officer in Northern Ireland, said: “My mother, who went to Belsen in 1945 as an officer in the SOE, never told me that she had been there until just before she died.

“When I asked: ‘How the heck did you not tell me you had been in Belsen in 1945

with the British Expeditionary Force as an SOE agent’ – a spy, effectively – she said: ‘It is because I am ashamed...

I am ashamed because the Holocaust happened when I was alive.’ Now I understand what she meant. We have got to stop the persecution of any religion.”

The SOE was set up and operated in near-total secrecy, with Churchill famously ordering it to “set Europe ablaze”.

‘GREATEST THREAT SINCE END OF WAR’ The world’s Jewish community has to “get its act together” if it is to face down its gravest threat since the Second World War. That’s the stark warning offered by Jonathan Goldstein, chairman of the Jewish Leadership Council, who spoke to online newspaper Times of Israel last week. He warned global Jewry “is under threat to an extent which it has never been since the end of the Second World War” due to anti-Zionist rhetoric in universities together with the use of classic antisemitic tropes.

TORY MP HANDED FORMAL WARNING A Conservative politician who spoke at a conference attended by “far-right” politicians has received a formal warning from the party. Daniel Kawczynski received widespread condemnation for appearing at the National Conservatism Conference in Rome last week, along with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, ex-French National Front MP and niece of Marine Le Pen, Marion Marechal, and the Polish Law and Justice MEP Ryszard Legutko.

Father’s Nazi passport returned A Jewish doctor whose father fought with the British Army has told of the “remarkable” twist of fate that brought him his passport issued by the Nazis more than 80 years ago, writes Mathilde Frot.

Daniel Robitshek, 59, from Atlanta in the US, embarked on a “fascinating” journey of discovery after a Facebook user in a moshav in northern Israel took to social media upon unearthing the document that languished among her father’s belongings for decades.

“The lady who had the passport speaks broken English and Hebrew.

I speak broken Hebrew and English,” he told Jewish News on Friday, explaining that he had spoken to Mira Ariav over the phone this month following her extraordinary find.

“She told me her father had passed away a couple of months ago and, as she was cleaning out some of his stuff, found this passport. It was of my father as a teenager, and [our fathers] were good friends.”

Within hours of seeing Ariav’s social media appeal, which was shared hundreds of times, researchers at the Israeli genealogy website MyHeritage were able to track down Robitshek and help return the passport to him.

was the fact this passport was issued by the Nazi regime,” said Nitay Elboym, the researcher who worked on the case.

“We started from there. We had hints, like the date of birth and name. It only took us a few hours and we only relied on the MyHeritage system,” he added.

The document written in German and containing several Nazi-insignia and stamps belonged to Robitshek’s father Zvi, who died in 1995 in Los Angeles aged 72. It appears to have been issued in 1939 and, Robitshek said, the document’s remarkably “well-

preserved” pages bear the marks of his father’s brushes with history. “It looks like [my father] went through Sweden, Greece, Turkey, and ultimately probably by ship to Palestine.”

Robitshek, who hopes to write a memoir of his family’s Second World War stories of survival, revealed plans to translate the passport into English.

His father, he said, “kept things very close to the vest” after moving to the US, divulging very little about his earlier years. Most of the details uncovered came from his mother, who died in 2014.

Born in Czechoslovakia, Robitshek’s father lost most members of his family to the Holocaust, including his two sisters, a brother-in-law, and both parents, who perished in the Nazi death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau.

“He had a second cousin he found in Canada years later, and a great-aunt he knew had escaped before the war,” said Robitshek. “Obviously his life was changed forever and you can imagine the survivor’s guilt he lived with.”

From Prague, Zvi travelled to Denmark in the summer of 1939 after the Nazi invasion of Czechoslovakia, and stayed with a Jewish youth group with Ariav’s father for a year-and-a-half.

“They made their way to the Palestine mandate and ended up in a kibbutz together,” he said.

From there, he enlisted with the Jewish Infantry Brigade Group, a British Army regiment of 30,000 Jews from Palestine. He was stationed in Egypt and Italy before moving to the US in 1958.

Robitshek’s four daughters have all seen photographs of the passport. Two of them, based locally, have touched it.

“It’s an amazing connection with the past, to be able to feel it, to see his picture and the stamps in Palestine mandate,” he said. “It’s something that is meaningful to them.”

Dragon tamers take at joyous Jewish Sch

The community’s outstanding Jewish educators were honoured on Wednesday evening at the fifth annual Jewish Schools Awards, writes Adam Decker.

Hosted by television presenter Natasha Kaplinsky, the joint initiative between Jewish News and Partnerships for Jewish Schools (PaJeS) saw 250 guests enjoy a glamourous gala evening at Kinloss Synagogue.

Five awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award were handed out, with winners receiving £5,000 for a project of their choice and runners-up each getting £1,000.

The evening also featured a memorable new Dragon’s Den-style competition in which six teams of innovative students from Jewish primary and secondary schools pitched for project funding.

Projects varied from an ‘Eco-Club’ to a ‘Broadcasting and Radio Studio’, with one donor, Andrew Wolfson of The Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust, so impressed that he agreed to fund all of the initiatives.

Collaboration was the theme of the first two teaching awards, with Immanuel College’s Naomi Amdurer honoured for Curriculum Collaboration in a Secondary School, and Rabbi Joshua Conway and Morah Bilha Cohen from Nancy Reuben Primary School jointly picking up the equivalent primary school award.

Naomi chairs Shevet Achim, the school’s social action and charity committee. The initiative has successfully engaged 100 students on a fortnightly basis, with pupils feeling “uniquely geared up for the outside world”.

For Naomi, the very best teachers always put their pupils first, motivating them with “gentle encouragement” and having their best interests at heart. With the prize money, Naomi intends to grow Shevet Achim further, while doing “something amazing” for charity or social action.

pair led Year 6 pupils on a “pioneering” trip to Rome, learning about Jewish and secular teaching. For Rabbi Conway, the “opportunity to create tomorrow’s leaders today” motivates him, with Bilha adding that you’ve got to “work hard each day” for the best outcomes.

And the prize money? The pair laugh: “We

might have to fight over it!”

The evening included a tribute to the Central Specialist Crime team of the Metropolitan Police, who “quite literally saved lives” in response to a serious case impacting the Jewish community. Accepting an award, Detective Inspector Mark Rogers described working with

Yet this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Lira Winston, managed just that for her substantial 25-year contribution to Jewish education.

Lira has worked at PaJeS since 2012 as assistant director, working alongside the director on the strategy and management of the organisation. She is responsible for

leadership programmes for heads and governors and runs an annual residential seminar, as well as other training days and networking opportunities.

Leading tributes, Lord Sacks described Lira as the “most modest, kindest and wisest person” he knows, who “richly deserves” the award but would “least expect it”.

Lira was a history researcher and moved to work in the Jewish community in 1991 as Director of the Sinclair Charitable Trust and for Jewish Continuity. From 2000 she ran

the UJIA Ashdown Fellowship, a leadership programme for education professionals. In 2008 Lira became project manager of the JLC Report, The Future of Jewish Schools.

PaJeS as “one of the most rewarding projects” he had undertaken in his 20-year career.

Ofrit Selby, of the King David High School in Manchester, won the Beyond the Classroom Award in a Secondary School, with Rebbe Dovi Colman receiving the equivalent primary school accolade.

Accepting the award, Lira was characteristically humble in feeling “completely overwhelmed.” She praised the “absolutely fantastic people from who I’ve learned something all the time” and thanked her “most incredible colleagues” in the PaJeS team.

“Their dedication to doing everything in the best way is truly amazing,” she added.

In a touching video broadcast from Los Angeles, her son Ben Winston described Lira as “always focused on making life better for others”. James Cordon added his congratulations, and Harry Styles wished her mazeltov. He said: “By being welcomed so many times into your home, I’ve learnt what the Jewish community stands for.”

A mathematics teacher by trade, it is Ofrit’s work outside the classroom which has caught the eye. She is in the early stages of creating an allotment, enabling students who struggle socially to collaborate in a healthy environment. For Ofrit, the project has afforded pupils the opportunity to uniquely “express themselves” in an environment free of the constraints of a classroom.

After all, she laughs, “working in the mud doesn’t requires too many skills!” With the prize money, Ofrit will invest in facilities for the allotment, including a proper fence, small shed and gardening tools accessible to all ages.

For Rebbe Colman, opening children’s eyes to the possibilities of “making a real difference” motivates him. A gifted project leader, his ethos is to “teach the child, not the subject”. His advice to new teachers is always to treat each child as an individual to truly understand their needs. Plus,

he smiles, “always remember, it gets easier!”

The final Volunteer Award went to Clare Zinkin of Etz Chaim Jewish Primary School, for single-handedly building and maintaining the school’s library.

The children’s publisher passionately described reading as the “most important thing for a child’s future”, which has driven her to create a “sanctuary” where she can create “readers for life.” Clare will use the prize money to secure a patron of reading – and of course buy books!

Reflecting on the evening, Rabbi David Meyer, executive director of PaJeS, said: “Tonight has been a truly special event since everyone here cares so much about Jewish education. All our finalists are champions, working towards the shared goal of ensuring our young people emerge as future leaders.”  Editorial comment, page 16

Science zone, radio studio and eco club among bright ideas With their confident and articulate pitches, the six teams of innovative students from Jewish schools made the real contestants of Dragons’ Den look like amateurs.

The finalists, four from primary schools and two from secondary schools, each presented their ideas to the room of 250 guests and then took questions from four judges.

Praising all six pitches for their “outstanding quality”, judge Chana Kanzen praised the teams for their successful use of Jewish values, budgeting, sustainability and longevity.

The winning secondary school was Kantor King Solomon High School, for their idea of creating an ‘Eco Club’ to implement positive environment changes. The judges were impressed by how “passionate” and “well researched” the project was.

Extensive preparation went into each pitch, with teams made up of up to four pupils learning about business plans, as well as how to research and present in front of a large audience.

Two primary schools were joint winners, with Sinai Jewish Primary School’s proposal for a ‘Broadcasting and Radio Studio’ being praised for its “uniqueness” and the manner in which it captured the “essence of the school.”

Menorah Foundation School’s idea of a ‘Science Nature Garden’ equally impressed the judges, who “loved how it would involve the whole school and community”, including those with special educational needs.

And two inspiring pupils from Gesher Primary School revealed how a 3D printer can be utilised to make emotional support toys.

In a surprise twist, Andrew Wolfson of The Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust was so impressed by the high standard he pledged to fund all six of the proposed projects.

Speaking to Jewish News after the results, judge Anthony Wagerman said: “If we believe our Jewish schools really are the future of our community, then you can already see why the community is going to be in great shape for the next decade.”

Chelsea anger at sieg heil fans Chelsea Football Club has pledged to conduct a “full investigation” into undercover video footage recorded for a BBC documentary, which shows its fans making Nazi salutes, mimicking the sound of gas and singing antisemitic songs.

The club said it would take action “as soon as we have been able to view the video”.

In one clip, the Chelsea fans are heard chanting: “We hate Tottenham Yids! We hate Tottenham Yids!” Two fans appear to make Nazi salutes.

Chelsea has acknowledged antisemitism within its support base, but has taken extensive steps to educate its fans.

DICTIONARY SAYS ‘YIDDO’ IS ‘SPURS FAN’ ‘Yiddo’ has been added as a new word in The Oxford English Dictionary, defined partly as a Tottenham Hotspur fan.

The term is described as “...a Jew. Also in extended use: a supporter of or player for Tottenham Hotspur Football Club.” This comes after controversy surrounding use of the Y-word by and against Spurs’ supporters, in reference to the club’s historical

Jewish support.

In the summer of 2019, Spurs revealed in a survey that large numbers of Jewish fans don’t like hearing it, with findings from the consultation showing that up to half of Jewish Spurs fans would like to see a change, preferring that other fans stop using or chant it less.

Following the consultation, Tottenham claimed

some fans’ use of the term in chants was “to deflect antisemitic abuse”, but that almost half of the survey respondents felt fans’ use of it “contributed to a lack of clarity in terms of what is now considered antisemitic abuse”.

The Oxford English Dictionary also included ‘Yiddishness’ in its ‘new subentries’, meaning “Yiddish quality or character”, while

United Synagogue landmark / News

United for 150 years The Chief Rabbi and his predecessor were among the guests at the United Synagogue (US)’s 150th anniversary reception at the House of Lords.

More than 200 people returned to the place where the organisation was mandated in 1870 with an act of Parliament, to hear two of Anglo-Jewry’s leading thinkers mark the historic event.

Emeritus Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks hosted the event, heralding the US’ openness and unity, saying it represented “inclusive Orthodoxy.

It welcomes everyone”.

He said its formation 150 years ago, with the coming together of five London synagogues was a “miracle on the same level as the division of the Red Sea” and that it “renders the United Synagogue somewhat unique in many ways today. Sixty communities, but stronger and younger than it was 150 years ago.”

Sacks, who served from September 1991 to 2013, spoke about the diversity of the organisation, saying it provides a home for the “most learned, the least learned, the most observing, the least observant, and we’re all friends, and that is extraordinary”.

Video of anti-Israel uni demo goes viral Supporters of Israel clashed with Palestinian activists at the University of Bristol on Monday night, as students from an Israel advocacy group welcomed former British and Israeli military speakers to campus.

A vocal protest greeted the arrival of former British Army commander Colonel Richard Kemp and Brigadier General Yossi Kuperwasser, an Israeli defence and security analyst, whose appearance had been facilitated by The Pinsker Centre.

Event organisers called the protesters “antisemitism deniers” and retweeted a post calling them “snowflakes, oddballs and geeks”.

It also accused them of “harassing and slandering” Kemp, posting a video that was viewed more than 55,000 times in 48 hours.

2,000 years past their sell-by dates Green-fingered scientists have germinated six Judean date palms from 2,000 year-old seeds found in the Judean desert, writes Mathilde Frot.

The extinct variety known for the quality and size of its dates was “lost for centuries”, researchers wrote in the journal Science Advances, published last week.

The team, led by British-born Dr Sarah Sallon, of Israel’s Hadassah Medical Center, had successfully grown in 2008 a single 1,900-yearold date seed found near the Dead Sea, which they dubbed Methuselah.

But they have now grown a further six saplings, giving them the names Adam, Jonah, Uriel, Boaz, Judith, and Hannah.

The Judean palms’ resurrection offers a lesson for the climate change era, said Sallon,

“Dates are a cautionary tale,” she warned.

“These palm trees were the toast of the ancient world and they disappeared completely because of human intervention, because they weren’t looked after and were chopped down after countless invasions.”

But she added: “We bought some back to life and I think it also shows not only the terrible fragility of the natural world, but also the power of nature to rejuvenate itself.”

The team soaked some 32 seeds in water and treated them with plant hormones and fertiliser. Six seeds sprouted – after a two millennia wait.

The ancient seeds were found in archaeological sites in the Judean desert, among hundreds discovered between 1963 and 1991. “Large numbers” were found under rubble in an ancient

fortress built by King Herod the Great in the 1st century BC, where they remained hidden away for centuries, according to the study.

The area in which the dates were found was famous for its dates, researchers wrote. Classical writers heaped praise on the ancient mochacoloured fruit, noting its “large size, sweet taste, extended storage, and medicinal properties”.

On what caused the seeds’ longevity, “little is known”, the authors admitted, but dry weather conditions may have played a part, including “low precipitation and very low humidity around the Dead Sea”.

In the future, the team hopes to pollinate Hannah – expected to flower this year – with Methuselah’ pollen “to see if she produces dates”, explained Sallon.

All these innovative ideas were expertly pitched by pupils aged five to 17 in a Dragons’ Den-style addition to the Jewish Schools Awards, organised by Partnerships for Jewish Schools in association with Jewish News. Andrew Wolfson of The Charles Wolfson Charitable Trust was so impressed that, in true Victor Kiam “I liked the shaver so much, I bought the company” style (if you don’t get the reference, ask your parents!), he delighted the budding social entrepreneurs by offering to fund not just the winners but all the initiatives. Along with a lifetime achievement award for the wonderful Lira Winston for service to Jewish education, it was a highlight of a night when these awards came of age.

Every year Jewish News highlights the achievements of our GCSE and A-level pupils – with each year seeming to outdo the last. But we created these awards with PaJeS five years ago to fill a void and publicly honour the heroes that help to propel our youngsters to these results: the teachers.

This week’s event felt like a glamorous celebration befitting of their immeasurable contribution. wouldn’t do this, we didn’t go.

But as a cricket fanatic, I have exchanged smoked salmon for onion bhaji sandwiches with Indian supporters, and had an Australian lady sitting behind me chanting “Warnie” while spilling beer down my neck without batting an eyelid. That, I suggest, is true tolerance.

THANK YOU, SADIQ, FOR SPEAKING OUT ABOUT POLISH REVISIONISM Sadiq Khan’s criticism of Polish revisionism during the Holocaust is not false and I applaud the mayor for speaking out.

I travelled to Krakow for five days with a group from the north-east. I was the only Jew. Our hotel was in Kazimierz [Krakow’s historic Jewish quarter]. Here are some of my experiences.

A bakery had a sign which one could mistake for Hebrew letters. It was owned and run

by Poles, who openly showed their apparent hatred for Jews and oddly said it was “good for business”. Restaurants and coffee houses boasted Jewish menus and gave the impression there was a revival of Jewish culture that had existed before the war.

In the evenings, police roamed the streets where the three synagogues/museum were located. The walls along the side streets had swastikas freshly painted. I constantly heard that millions of Poles suffered atrocities, first by the Germans and then by the Soviets.

There was no mention of Jewish suffering.

On our visit to Auschwitz I and Auschwitz-

Birkenau, the guide repeated how the Poles suffered. When I questioned why he had not once mentioned Jews who perished in the camps, he said Jews always claim to be victims and I should not believe what has been reported. I told him that as a Jew I found him preaching antisemitism and false historical facts and he should educate himself what took place before he took around foreign visitors. He stared and said: “You can’t be a Jew, you don’t look like a Jew.” I gave him a short history lesson.

The people in my group, none of whom knew about the Holocaust, asked me tons of questions, which I answered. They, too, were very surprised I was Jewish.

Mr Khan spoke out at what the ordinary Poles believe, not government officials! We must thank him for his courage to denounce Poland over Holocaust revisionism.

After Corbyn we face a fight for our very soul LISA NANDY, MP

I

n 2016, I was getting ready to appear on the BBC’s Daily Politics. As a member of the shadow cabinet I was bound by collective responsibility to promote and defend the party line.

My problem was I didn’t know the party line on the growing media storm about Labour MP Naz Shah who had liked and shared antisemitic social media posts. Privately, I had spent 24 hours insisting that Naz should be suspended but got no response. No answers were forthcoming about what action would be taken, so I went on the BBC and broke collective responsibility to demand Naz be suspended.

Four years on and I’m still angry about that day. The hostility and abuse Jewish members of the Labour Party have been subjected to has been inexcusable, but just as bad has been the inaction and failures of leadership in the party’s response.

The crisis of antisemitism in Labour is a fight for the soul of our party. The existence of any form of racism, institutional or otherwise, is an attack on and a betrayal of our values of

tolerance, respect, equality and solidarity.

Labour must change the rules so that we root out all antisemites from our ranks and create a hostile environment towards those who deny the existence of antisemitism.

Zero-tolerance is just the start. We must change the culture. To do that will require the commitment to fight to drive change through.

I am committed to this fight. That is why I have published a plan with specific moves to tackle antisemitism.

It is the product of many conversations with Jewish colleagues and friends. It focuses on a new independent disciplinary process, comprehensive training but also transparency.

Unless we are more open we cannot hope to rebuild trust.

My hope is that I have built the trust and credibility to lead on this issue by speaking out in public and private over the years. colleagues to demand nobody should question the right of Labour Friends of Israel to be in the Labour Party. And for years I have challenged the fallacy that doing so would restrict free speech in relation to Palestine.

The abuse faced by Jewish members of our party has been utterly disgraceful. Everyone who has stood up to the abusers has become a target too.

Those of us that want to be allies have to make sure we never back down in the face of that abuse and criticism.

This is personal to me. My grandad fought in the war and was elected to Parliament afterwards where he was involved in efforts to

build and defend the state of Israel. My father faced racism in his work, and in the communities he tried to make home. We are the Labour

Party, and we must be the vanguard in the fight against antisemitism. That means speaking up, and standing with our Jewish members and the Jewish community.

I won’t ask Jewish members to trust me, I want to earn your trust and lead the fight to change the culture in our party.

I have always been part of that fight. I will not let you down.

mar Barghouti finally made it to the UK for a visit at the end of January, after visa issues meant he could not attend the Labour Party Conference last year.

He is a star of the international antiIsrael left. He co-founded the BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) movement and is a founding committee member of the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.

Barghouti doesn’t try to hide his objective.

He says Israel shouldn’t exist, that he wants the Jewish state to disappear. In his own words: “Definitely, most definitely we oppose a Jewish state in any part of Palestine. No Palestinian... will ever accept a Jewish state in Palestine.”

He has also said: “I do not buy into the twostate solution. … it was never a moral solution” and “a return for refugees would end Israel’s existence as a Jewish state.

WHY CAN’T ALL UK ADVOCATES FOR THE PALESTINIANS PROMOTE PEACE INSTEAD OF OFTEN HATEFUL ATTITUDES?

The right of return is a basic right that cannot be given away; it’s inalienable”.

He is against a binational state, as this would “imply accepting their [Jews’] right to self-determination”.

Barghouti also makes crank comparisons of Israeli behaviour to the Nazis: “Many of the methods of collective and individual ‘punishment’ [in] the occupied Palestinian territories are reminiscent of common Nazi practices

against the Jews.”

His stances are a disgrace. They cause huge offence to Jews here in the UK, let alone in Israel, by denying their peoplehood and right to self-determination, and comparing the actions of a country they feel an affinity with to those of the Nazis who attempted to exterminate the Jewish people.

So why did the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) invite someone who repeatedly makes prima facie antisemitic statements to be the keynote speaker at their AGM on Saturday, 25 January, and greet him with a standing ovation?

Why did Brian Eno host a gathering for

him the next day with musicians and singers?

Why did the PSC and KCL Action Palestine society bring him onto the King’s campus to speak, surreally, as part of a panel on “Forming an anti-racism front”?

Why is a person with these repugnant views being lauded by the PSC and artists such as Eno? Why can’t all UK advocates for the Palestinians promote peace instead of displaying often hateful attitudes?

Many do manage to make the Palestinian case without antisemitic tropes or hatred for Israel. It is time the PSC learned how to do this, and took a lot more care about which voices it promotes.

Sometimes the wisdom of the crowd is not wise ALEX BRUMMER

R

ound robin letters to newspapers have a reputation for being on the wrong side of history. Often they are motivated by malice rather than judgement. They allow like-minded critics of policy to draw attention to their views, which otherwise might not command a hearing.

The most notorious UK round robin letter of the late 20th century was the statement from 364 ‘leading’ economists in March 1981 declaring that Margaret Thatcher’s monetarist economic policies would kill the economy stone dead. In the following decades, not only did Britain enjoy above trend growth, but much the same economic approach was adopted by the Blair-Brown Labour Party to generally good effect.

Last year’s notorious round robin was a device used by a cadre of Labour-supporting Jews to reassure the world there was not a racist bone in Jeremy Corbyn’s body. Last February, a long list of Labour, academic and literary worthies chose to ignore the rabid antisemitism aimed at Jewish MP’s – including

Luciana Berger, Ruth Smeeth and Margaret Hodge – to declare Corbyn a “crucial ally” in the fight against “bigotry and reaction”.

On the eve of the 12 December election, another group of worthies, including actor Miriam Margolyes, wrote to The Guardian suggesting that Boris Johnson had invoked “some of the oldest and most pernicious antisemitic stereotypes”. It was an artful piece of displacement.

By then, the cat was out the bag. On the doorsteps, ordinary Britons recognised Corbyn’s Labour for what it had become.

He was leading a party, which had lost touch with the tolerance that had made it a haven for Jewish voters and politicians.

I was reminded of all this by a recent round robin that was brought to my attention. One does not have to be a diplomat of distinction to recognise Donald Trump’s so-called deal of the century peace plan is deeply flawed. It bitterly divides opinion inside Israel and outside.

Indeed, the Israeli chief executives of the Abraham Initiatives (which I chair in the UK) forensically examined the plan, noting the proposal for land swaps ‘is an affront to the status and rights of the residents of the region”, adding: “The Arab citizens of Israel [of which

there are two million] are not subjects, they cannot be passed from hand to hand, and their citizenship is unconditional.”

They spoke with the moral authority of a non-government organisation whose programmes – which include joint teaching for Israeli-Jewish and Israeli-Arab students – have been embraced by the Israeli government.

The round robin that has been circulated

by Yachad in the UK and garnered global support, notes: “Trump’s one-sided deal does not adequately address Palestinian aspirations for independence in a sovereign state; it gives Israel the green light for the dangerous annexation of Palestinian territory.” Yachad

calls for this “sham” deal to be rejected.

As is the case with all such letters (and in the course of my daily job I see them all the time), there is cowardice about the approach.

The originators don’t like some aspect of public policy, yet instead of using their own moral authority to point out flaws they seek comfort in gathering as many like-minded views as they can in hope of sustaining arguments.

Instead of the granular detail being addressed, as it is inside Israel by focused non-governmental organisations, the debate is reduced to broad bromides with which it is hard to disagree.

Most of what Trump does in foreign policy, whether directed at North Korea, Iran or even friends like the UK, is outside diplomatic normalcy. So it is with the ‘peace deal of the century’, which treats ordinary citizens of Israel, protected by the constitution of the founding fathers of the state, as pawns.

But the one-size-fits-all of multi-signature circulated letters is no more than braggadocio. It does nothing to heal differences between diaspora and Israeli Jews, combat the ogre of antisemitism or to build confidence in the cause of a just peace.

osher meaty restaurants are struggling to ‘meat’ the growing demands of vegetarian and vegan customers. There are not enough vegetarian options in mainstream meaty restaurants. When I go to Hendon or Golders Green for a bite, I’m always hungry for more.

In a kosher meaty restaurant, there are no classic pizza or pasta options to fall back on. While there are plenty of milky restaurants, meaty eateries need to modernise their menus with more plant-based foods if they hope to stay in vogue.

I decided to look up the menus of three UK-based kosher meaty restaurants – and I can’t say I was particularly surprised by the results.

The first restaurant had two vegetarian options; the second, one vegetarian option; and the third didn’t have any except a bowl

of lentil soup (although I think most people count soup as a starter).

More often than not, when I go out to eat with my family, my meal consists of two or three things I’ve plucked from the ‘sides’ portion of the menu because I cannot stomach another falafel, which is apparently the only vegan word in the Jewish vocabulary.

This is, of course, incredibly frustrating because I love spending time with my family and going out to fancy restaurants, but I also love my food (as any good Jewish girl should).

I want to be able to have a variety of choices when I eat out, because while my family is deciding between the burger, steak, kebab, shawarma, chicken, lamb, cholent or schnitzel, I’m deciding between the bean burger or the chicken caesar salad without chicken (which is essentially just wet lettuce).

In a meat restaurant, it’s no cheese allowed. I guess it’s falafel once more...

There are so many new vegan foods that will help kosher restaurants a-peel to the herbivores within the community. Seitan, jackfruit and the evergreen tofu all work as

If Subway can offer a vegan meatball marinara, and Greggs can make a vegetarian sausage roll, then surely meaty restaurants can stomach a vegan ‘steak’ made of seitan, or vegan ‘chicken’ wings made of cauliflower.

This isn’t an issue that can be swept under the carpet, as more and more people are trying out a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle.

According to The Vegan Society in 2016, 1.6million people identified as either vegetarian or vegan.

With issues of the environment coming to the fore of public consciousness, veganism has become the fastest growing lifestyle movement across the globe – and it shows no signs

of slowing down. The demand for vegetarian and vegan alternatives is going to go up, not down, and meaty restaurants are going to need to find ways to adapt.

I understand the importance of kosher meaty restaurants. Jewish people have as much of a right as anyone to access meat.

While meat is undeniably an essential part of Jewish culture and a staple in Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Mizrahi and Ethiopian food, meaty restaurants need to feed all members of the Jewish community – even vegans.

Vegetarian food is so much more than rabbit food as long as you don’t treat it as an afterthought. So to all the meaty restaurants out there: vegetarians and vegans are loud, proud and really, really hungry. Get cooking!

Defending the truth Francine Wolfisz speaks to David Baddiel about tackling Holocaust denial in his thought-provoking documentary

W

hen David Baddiel meets someone who doesn’t believe the Holocaust happened, it doesn’t just sadden him – it puts him into a rage.

“I feel a little out of control about how I’m going to react,” confesses the author and televison presenter, before telling me he had to hold himself back from punching a man who believed there were swimming pools rather than gas chambers at Auschwitz.

For within Baddiel’s view of the world, there is no greater untruth than Holocaust denial, something he expresses as “the archetypal lie in our culture, from whereby all the other lies fan out” – and, given his family history, it’s easy to understand why.

His late mother, Sarah, was aged just five months when she and her parents escaped from Nazi Germany and came over to England in 1939.

By his own reckoning, Baddiel is “only here by the skin of my teeth”.

To have to defend the facts of the Holocaust, or indeed that it happened, seems absurd to him.

After all, he “grew up with the certainty that the Holocaust happened and that it was something we always have to remember and take seriously”.

Yet a recent poll shows that one in six people don’t know about the Holocaust or don’t think it happened as the history books say.

That sobering statistic, coupled with the loss of first-hand witnesses to the atrocities of the Second World War and the rise of a time in which “untruths have a lot of power”, compelled Baddiel to find out more about the reasons why people deny the Holocaust, which he declares is just another form of antisemitism.

The result is his thought-provoking documentary, Confronting Holocaust Denial, which airs on Monday on BBC Two, and delves into the very roots of revised history, from Nazi attempts to cover up their activities and the British government glossing over the more unsavoury aspects of Hitler’s regime, to pseudo-science being used to “prove” the murder of six million Jews was a falsehood.

He also attempts to take Facebook to task over

banning hate speech, but finds several pages where Holocaust deniers are posting such material on the social media platform.

Yet to really get to the nub of his subject, Baddiel decides to meet a Holocaust denier in person.

This was despite experiencing much angst over doing so and against the advice of academic Deborah Lipstadt – whom Baddiel says he “intensely admires” – and Anthony Julius, the British lawyer who successfully defended her after she was sued for libel by Holocaust denier David Irving.

“Deborah has a position that debating the facts of the Holocaust is to denigrate the memory of the victims and the memory of the Holocaust,” explains Baddiel. “But how, then, do you take on denial?

“On the internet, there’s this feeling not to feed the trolls. Now I don’t agree with that to some extent, because I think the trouble is our culture is being shaped by them and Holocaust deniers are

the extremists of the trolls. Ignoring them has not worked. My personal feeling is you have to try to take them on.”

Despite feeling “incredibly discomforted”, Baddiel arranges to travel to Ireland and meet staunch denier Dermot Mulqueen, who was arrested in 2015 after smashing an axe into a television set as part of a “conceptual art performance” to launch International Holocaust Hoax Day. He also runs an alternative tour of Auschwitz and likes to play the guitar while singing offensive songs about Jews.

But with a 7,000-strong following on Facebook, Baddiel knows Dermot is someone to be feared rather than mocked.

When they meet, Baddiel is clearly uneasy and reluctantly shakes his hand, before spending a deeply uncomfortable three hours trying to unravel Dermot’s conflicting view of the world.

I ask Baddiel if he felt he was any clearer after their meeting.

“It’s very difficult to talk to a person and come away feeling that you’ve completely understood why they do what they do,” he confesses. “But I did get a sense that he is a man trapped in his own ideological conundrum, which allows him to make sense of whatever rage and anger he feels about the world.

“That’s what’s going on with a lot of those Holocaust deniers. They are normally men who feel aggrieved or let down by the world, but are special because they’ve not had the wool pulled over their eyes like everyone else. It’s a weird way of comforting themselves with their superiority of secret knowledge.”

As disquieting as Baddiel’s meeting with Mulqueen is, it’s his next interview that packs the most powerful punch, as survivor Rachel Levy opens up about the atrocities she witnessed firsthand during the Shoah.

“There’s a growth of a movement that would say these testimonies are not true, so it was important just to feel the truth of it,” concludes Baddiel.

“Having Rachel’s testimony in a documentary where you talk about questioning that truth makes it all the more powerful – especially in a world where the truth is much more fragile than it’s ever been.”  Confronting Holocaust Denial with David Baddiel airs on Monday, 17 February, 9pm, on BBC Two

Worth a Mensch-ion Israeli-American actress Natalie Portman used high fashion to send out a strong message about lack of diversity at Sunday’s Oscars.

Portman, who took the Best Actress gong in 2011 for Black Swan, made a stand about the lack of nominations for female film-makers by having their names stitched in gold onto her black Dior cape worn over her gown. The names included Lorene Scafaria (Hustlers), Lulu Wang (The Farewell), Greta Gerwig (Little Women), Marielle Heller (A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood), Melina Matsoukas (Queen & Slim), Alma Har’el (Honey Boy), Céline Sciamma (Portrait of a Lady on Fire) and Mati Diop (Atlantics).

“I wanted to recognise the women who were not recognised for their incredible work this year in my subtle way,” Portman told the Los Angeles Times.

THEATRE From The Inside Looking Out JFS student Sam Taylor has organised a teen performance showcase featuring West End actress Emma Kingston to help raise money for children’s charity Spread A Smile.

The show, From The Inside Looking Out, which takes place at the Radlett Centre on Monday, 24 February, is the first from 18-year-old Sam’s recently-launched production company, Offset Theatre.

Sam’s 16-year-old brother, Joe, will also perform an original song on his guitar on the night, which is themed around issues faced by teenagers and their use of social media.

Speaking ahead of the show, Sam, who “loves to write, sing and perform”, said: “Growing up, I was always the one who directed and put together shows for my brothers and I to perform for our family, so organising shows is something I’ve always wanted to do.

Kirk Douglas Tributes were paid to Hollywood great Kirk Douglas, who died last Wednesday aged 103. The star, patriarch of an acting dynasty and one of the few remaining survivors of Hollywood’s golden age, was best known for films including Spartacus, Ace In The Hole and Champion.

Douglas defied a povertystricken childhood to forge one of the great Hollywood careers, with his trademark cleft chin and steely blue eyes making him a much-loved leading man. He made his film debut in 1946 noir, The Strange Love Of Martha Ivers, opposite Barbara Stanwyck and soon established himself as a star, with his explosive acting style and masculine persona.

The only son in a family of six girls, Douglas was born Issur Danielovitch in 1916 in the town of Amsterdam, New York, to Herschel and Bryna Danielovitch, poor Jewish immigrants from what is today Belarus. In his first memoir, The Ragman’s Son, Douglas told how he legally changed his name before joining the US Navy during the

Second World War. His eldest son, Michael Douglas, a two-time Oscar-winner, said in a statement: “To the world he was a legend, an actor from the golden age of movies who lived well into his golden years, a humanitarian whose commitment to justice and the causes he believed in set a standard for all of us to aspire to. But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter he was simply Dad, to Catherine, a wonderful father-in-law, to his grandchildren and great-grandchild their loving grandfather, and to his wife Anne, a wonderful husband.”

Eurovision winner Netta Barzilai has dropped her latest single, Ricki Lake – an irreverent take-down of American hyper-consumerism.

Netta can be seen bathing in a tub filled with doughnuts and dancing in a mayonnaise-jar laden supermarket aisle in the irreverent music video released on Friday.

The pop singer, whose hit song Toy earned her the coveted Eurovision 2018 trophy, said the inspiration for her latest single came from the Ricki Lake Show, the popular 1990s chat show she watched as a teenager.

“I was fascinated by all the colourful characters she featured in her show. It was a glimpse into the ultimate America at its best and worst,” Netta said in a statement.

“Ricki Lake for me was always how the misfit became America’s sweetheart, and this song and video are my cheesy, messy and greasy homage to her,” she added.

‘People often look the other way’ Deborah Cicurel reviews Unkept Secrets, an emotive exploration of child sexual abuse in the Orthodox community

T

he taboo of child sexual abuse is one explored in a spate of recent documentaries, from Leaving Neverland and Abducted In Plain Sight to Tell Me Who I Am. But while it may be easy to believe such things happen outside of our community, the opposite is tragically true.

Director Dalit Kimor has confronted the issue head on in Unkept Secrets, a brave, shocking and emotive documentary on child sex abuse within the Orthodox community.

Migdal Emunah, a charity for Jewish victims of sexual abuse and their families, recently hosted a screening of the film at JW3 as part of UK Sexual Abuse and Sexual Violence Awareness Week.

It makes for a powerful but uncomfortable watch, in which a woman called Genendy and two brothers, Yanky and Mendy, reveal their systematic grooming and abuse, in Genendy’s case by her own father, a famous rabbi, and the brothers by a prominent and respected rabbi.

What made each of their experiences even more devastating was that when they finally spoke out, they were shunned and ridiculed by a community they had trusted, who denounced them as liars or moissers (informers) and effectively cast them out. In Genendy’s case, she was cut off from her family, while the brothers’ parents rallied around them to try to convict their abuser, even though their community shunned them. Their mother, Ornit, worries for her children and fights for justice in scenes that are moving and heartbreaking.

They are helped by Shana Aaronson, a victim advocate with US-based charity Jewish Community Watch, which works to prevent child sexual abuse within the Orthodox Jewish community.

Speaking to Jewish News this week, Shana says there has been an explosion of survivors coming forward to talk about their traumatic experiences from a wide range of ages and backgrounds. “There was an incredible taboo and, very slowly, people started talking about it,” she says. “For many years, the only people who would talk about it were individuals who had left the community, who thought they didn’t have as much to lose.

“Slowly but surely, you started to see people who also looked outwardly religious, who were talking about having been abused, and that’s one part of what was so important in this documentary because we don’t see enough of that.

“Any kind of situation where a survivor comes forward to tell their story is unbelievably brave, and specifically coming from these insular communities, where they’re shattering stigmas.”

Shana says prominent abusers rely on the stigma of speaking out within Orthodox communities to groom and abuse their victims.

“Abusers rely on apathy and the fact people loathe to get involved and think ‘this doesn’t concern me and it’s none of my business’.

So often, supporting an abuser means doing nothing and supporting a victim means taking

action. So it’s sometimes easier for people to look the other way.

“In the documentary, you see extreme examples where people intervene in supporting the abuser, because they want to believe it isn’t true. Eventually people came out in support of the victim, but it took a very long time.

“What people don’t talk about is the fact that, just as groomers slowly ingratiate themselves and build a relationship and a rapport with their victims, they also groom communities, creating the same dynamic with the victim’s parents and the wider community. So if anyone comes forward, they have crowds who think they’re a great, righteous individual, a family man and a wonderful teacher with a solid reputation.”

Even at the end of the documentary, when the brothers’ abuser is convicted for seven years, Genendy hears from another victim of her father, validating what she’s felt all along, the viewer feels the victims’ continuing struggles.

Genendy is seen inviting some of her 11 siblings to her son’s barmitzvah, only for them all to hang up the phone the minute they hear her voice. So why won’t her own family members believe her?

“There are psychological mechanisms and really strong cognitive dissonance at play,” Shana explains. “It’s a matter of convincing them something happened that changes everything they know about their family, reality and community.

That has such implications for their lives and it’s very hard to convince someone when they are really determined not to believe it.”

The only way to battle against this is to encourage everyone to “speak up”, says Shana.

“If you hear about something in your own community, speak up and support the victim,” Shana advises. “Being active on social media is important, so the community is aware this is an issue and it does go on.”  For more information and support regarding child sexual abuse, visit www.jewishcommunitywatch.org or www.migdalemunah.org.uk

BY RABBI ALEX CHAPPER Immediately preceding the giving of the Ten Commandments, the Jewish people are instructed to set boundaries around the mountain with a warning that read: “Beware of ascending the mountain or touching its edge.”

After three days of preparation, Moses is summoned to the peak of the mountain and God tells him to warn the people not to come up the mountain. Moses suggests it is not necessary to repeat the warning, but God insists that they’re warned a second time.

We have to ask, what is the significance of this footnote that is almost lost in the momentous revelation episode? Of what interest to us is the method of crowd control that was employed at that time?

The 12th Century French Tosafist medieval Talmud commentator, Bechor Shor, explains that a close reading of the text reveals this wasn’t just a physical fence around the mountain – instead it was the people who had to make a figurative boundary for themselves and be

warned not to pass through it.

In other words, this wasn’t a simple “Keep off the Grass” sign to protect the mountain, but a very important message to them and every generation.

The prerequisite for the Torah is to know when and where to set our own boundaries: we have to be constantly conscious that there are limits. In our daily routine, in our ambitions and in all areas of life, selfcontrol is essential. The Torah was given to human beings, not animals, and what sets us apart is the fact that we’re endowed with free will.

But with freedom comes responsibility and the expectation that we exercise self-restraint.

The challenge of Sinai today is to be guided by the teachings of the Torah and be self-disciplined enough to set ourselves limits, beyond which we are not prepared to pass.

What does the Torah say about: Coronavirus

People have been evacuated from China, while travellers recently returned and cruise ships are being forcibly quarantined. What does the Torah say about new pandemics?

After the Nile was turned to blood, the Egyptian Pharaoh thought he had weathered the worst of it.

Unfortunately for him, Moses’ God was not going to back down.

The Torah relates that the plague of frogs was unprecedented: “Moses declared: ‘Never in the history of Egypt have your ancestors seen a plague like this one!’ And with that, Moses turned and left Pharaoh.”

In the lifetime of the prophet Joel, a plague of locusts hit the holy land.

Joel foretold of its arrival and that it would be more catastrophic than the plague that had hit Egypt.

Whether by prophecy or social

media, having some warning of what is coming is hugely helpful, as at least one can prepare.

The Hebrew word for plague is magefa from which is derived nagif, the modern word for “virus”.

Once warned of what is caught, Judaism teaches that one has a

responsibility to take all precautions necessary, including quarantine, to prevent others from being infected.

Chinese quarantines imposed on Wuhan and later on cruise ships and borders have a Biblical precedent in the leper colony situated outside the residential zones of the Israelite desert camp 3,500 years ago.

Although it is conceded that leprosy itself cannot be caught, it is just as likely that quarantine was required to protect the lepers themselves, who would have suffered lower immunity during their infection.

BY RABBI CHARLEY BAGINSKY And Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Eternal One, for God is highly exalted: the horse and rider has God thrown into the sea.”

It is one of the iconic moments of the Torah; the Israelites cross a parted sea to freedom, escaping the Egyptians and slavery. It is, in many ways, the beginning of the rest of our history, our rituals and our memory as Jews. But as Miriam sings, leading the people’s exaltation of the Eternal One, behind her many people and their horses drowned. It is not just us, with our modern sensitivity, who are uncomfortable with the sense of triumphalism at this moment.

Indeed, our ancient commentary places that discomfort into the mouth of God, as the Talmud tells us: “My children lie drowned in the sea, and you would sing?”

It is also for this reason that tradition tells us to spill drops of wine at the seder, to remind us that, while

we travelled the road to freedom, others suffered and perished.

What this highlights is that there are, within our texts and modern lives, difficult behaviours and theologies with which we struggle to reconcile about how we like to see ourselves, God, our ancestors and our beliefs.

Those of us who believe in God, and those of us who ask questions of our beliefs, have to struggle with and learn from such complexities.

We often hold someone up as a hero and try hard to ignore other sides to their character for which they need to be held to account, because it does not match the way we want to see the narrative.

The best way, for me, to look at this text is that it underlines our eternal struggle; to look a situation in the face and see its complex truth.

Gay marriage was only introduced in 2014, the Section 28 ban on teaching “the acceptability of homosexuality” was repealed less than 20 years ago and, for a large proportion of the population, homosexuality was a criminal act during their lifetime.

There is still much to do to break down barriers faced by the LGBT+ [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and related groups] community in this country, but we must remember how quickly progress has been made.

It is this backdrop we must recall when we hear of a person such as Phillip Schofield sharing his sexuality in public after many years of presenting as heterosexual.

Revealing a person’s sexuality is a deeply intimate choice – one that can feel a major step in a world in which people are still presumed to be heterosexual.

I have closely known many people

who have been in similar situations and it is a hard journey to go on to be willing to reveal your true self – to the world around you, but also to accept it for yourself.

What comes before anything else is for us all to show love and understanding. We must all remember that every person is created b’tzelem Elokim – in the image of God. In our Torah, Abraham is told to go for himself, lech l’cha, to find his path in life.

This has been the mission each of us has taken up ever since.

We often speak of wanting to make change, to engage in tikkun olam and repair the world around us.

Before we can do anything so big, we must look closer to home. Tikkun olam is built on a foundation of tikkun atzmi, the building of one’s own true identity.

When each of us is able to build our true sense of self, supported by our communities and our families, we take one step towards building a better world for everyone.

With the support of a loving family, Phillip Schofield has the strength to show his true self to the world.

The only correct Jewish response to him and all of those in our communities who find themselves in a similar position is to say kol hakavod – all strength to them as they continue to find their true path in this world. ◆ Laura Janner-Klausner is Senior Rabbi for the Movement for Reform Judaism

With that in mind, Dancing With Louise runs several classes very similar to your regular Zumba class, geared up especially for teens.

We run a teen Zumba class and a teen DanceFit bootcamp at our Hendon and Golders Green venues, and several

teen Frumba classes (Dancing to Jewish & Beaty music!) also in NW11, so there is something for everyone.

I always say to parents to sign up to one class first to check their child likes it before committing so you don’t have to worry about wasting money if it’s not for them.

I would also suggest getting a friend to go with them, as that tends to help motivate teens these days.
