The first British funeral for Holocaust victims will take place next weekend after the Imperial War Museum contacted the Chief Rabbi about human remains it has stored for two decades. Remains discovered by a survivor at Auschwitz, and likely to be from five adults and a child, will finally be laid to rest at Bushey New Cemetery on 20 January in an extraordinary event to which survivors and other community members are urged to attend. IWM revealed yesterday that
a container with the suspected remains was given to it by an unnamed individual – thought to be a survivor – back in 1997 as part of a collection of Holocaustrelated items said to have originated at Auschwitz. Despite stating it did not wish to acquire the container, it was still sent to the museum. Then in 2005, IWM tested the contents and confirmed the vessel held adult and child remains, although this cannot be 100 percent confirmed. IWM houses facilities to store human tissue, which it is legally able to do, and said it “cared“ for them for the last 22 years before deciding it was “no longer appropriate“ to do so during a review
ahead of the creation of its new Holocaust galleries, due to open in 2021. It contacted the office of the Chief Rabbi (pictured, inset) and Auschwitz Museum for their advice on how to proceed at the end of last year. Michael Goldstein, president of the United Synagogue (US), said: “For everyone connected with the US and, I’m quite sure, the entire community, this can only be described as the ultimate act of kindness, chesed shel emet in Hebrew, because, as with all burials, nobody can be thanked for what you’ve done. “We have the opportunity to do what was denied to our brothers and sisters during the Holocaust:
provide a dignified and appropriate Jewish burial.” He added: “We must remember that although we have only the remains of a number of victims of the Shoah, each was a person in their own right, with a family and a life and a Jewish identity, with hopes and dreams like each of us. One of them was a child. I will hug my own children especially tightly next Sunday. I thank all my colleagues who will make this burial possible
and know that each of them feels acutely the huge burden of responsibility for what we are doing. We welcome all those who wish to attend to join us at the levaya to pay their respects.” Survivors were informed this week of the discovery and special places will be reserved for them if they choose to attend. Holocaust Educational Trust chief executive Karen Pollock said: “When the camps were liberated, survivors started asking questions about their families: who survived, where were they, Cont, p3

RON PROSOR IS IN POLITICAL DEMAND A former Israeli ambassador to the UK is a wanted man, with several Israeli political parties keen for Ron Prosor to be part of their lists for the 9 April election. Prosor is hot property for parties from the nationalist New Right to more centrist Yesh Atid. He said: “Even after 30 years of public service, I have more to contribute. The elections are indeed an opportunity, but I have not yet made a decision about whether to enter politics.”
REPEATED CALL FOR COMMUNAL UNITY The Jewish Leadership Council (JLC) has repeated its call for the establishment of a “unified communal structure” with the Board of Deputies. The move – to ensure that the “communal architecture is fit for purpose and sustainable” – came after JLC president Jonathan Goldstein told a Limmud audience last month there were too many charities in the community. The JLC’s Simon Johnson, in response to a query from Jewish News, said: “We’ve always been in favour of talks that could lead to taking the best of both organisations.”
Get rid of Yid, Jewish groups urge Spurs fans Tottenham supporters’ use of the word ‘Yid’ to describe themselves was roundly condemned by Jewish groups ahead of Tuesday’s match against Chelsea, when three people were arrested for “racially aggravated offences”. The Board of Deputies and World Jewish Congress (WJC) both took a strident stand against the term, used in large numbers as a badge of honour by Spurs fans. WJC boss Robert Singer said: “Contrary to the protests of many fans, there is no grey area when it comes to slurs that target a particular religious, racial, or ethnic group. “The word has for years been reappropriated from its original Yiddish to carry a distinctly pejorative and antisemitic message and its use by fans in the stands, either as a self-designated nickname or as a slogan against rivals must not be tolerated in any way. The innocence this word once carried, as a simple translation for Jew, has long disappeared, and we must be extremely conscious of the antisemitic connotation it now bears.” Three men were arrested on suspicion of “racially aggravated public order offences” at Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg between Tottenham and Chelsea at Wembley, .
TERM ‘JEWISH LOBBY’ IS OK: LABOUR A Jewish Labour activist has criticised the party for declaring “Jewish lobby” doesn’t contravene its rules on antisemitism. Luisa Attfield, a member of the Jewish Labour Movement, complained after two members of her local constituency party in Barnet allegedly made the remark. Attfield took to Twitter to say: “Apparently claiming there’s a Jewish Lobby which is strong in Hendon is not breaching rules.”

A Scottish Labour local councillor has been reinstated into the party despite claiming that Jewish News colluded with Mossad to prevent a Jeremy Corbyn-led government. Fife councillor Mary Lockhart has only been warned about her future behaviour. Referring to Jewish News, the Jewish Chronicle and the Jewish Telegraph’s joint front page, warning a Corbyn government would pose an “existential threat to Jewish life”, she wrote: “If it is a Mossad-assisted campaign to prevent a Labour government it is unacceptable interference.”
HALT HATE LESSONS, MP URGES Dame Louise Ellman has called for the Government to stop paying Palestinian teachers over concerns that children in the West Bank are being taught incitement against Israel. The Labour MP, who is the vice-chair of Labour Friends of Israel (LFI), presented a Ten Minute Rule Bill in Parliament on Tuesday arguing that British taxpayers are funding the teaching of a curriculum preaching martyrdom and jihad. UK aid helps 24,000 children in the West Bank attend school but LFI chair Joan Ryan MP has called for the UK to cut its aid to Palestinians by 14 percent, and led a parliamen-
tary debate on the topic last June. In it, she alleged that “children of 10 are asked to calculate the number of martyrs in Palestinian uprisings in a maths textbook” and “children of 11 are taught that martyrdom and jihad are the most important meanings of life”. A Memorandum of Understanding between the UK and the Palestinian Authority (PA) requires the PA to “take action against incitement to violence, including addressing allegations of incitement in textbooks”. Middle East Minister Alistair Burt said concerns are raised “directly” with Palestinian education chiefs and that an independent review of its textbooks, conducted jointly with other international donors, is due to be completed by September. However, LFI director Jennifer Gerber said: “It is high time ministers stopped dragging their feet and took a stand.”

International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt has been urged by Conservative Friends of Israel (CFI) to take “a firmer approach” to the UN agency supporting millions of Palestinian refugees. In a joint letter to the Tory cabinet minister, the organisation’s chair Stephen Crabb MP joined CFI grandees Lord Eric Pickles and Lord Stuart Polak in taking Mordaunt to task over the Government’s financial support for the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNWRA).
The trio said the agency was “exploited for terror activities” and questioned the Government’s decision to support UNRWA “unconditionally in its existing format”, mirroring language used recently by the Trump administration. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called for UNRWA to be dismantled with its activities submerged in other UN agencies, and last year the US State Department pulled funding for what it called an “irredeemably flawed
operation”. UNRWA was established in 1949 and supports five million Palestinians living in refugee camps in countries such as Jordan, Syria and Lebanon, as well as working with communities in the West Bank and Gaza. Last month, the UK announced an additional £5million in emergency funding for its activities in Gaza, after the US withdrawal threatened its ability to provide basic humanitarian services.

PALESTINE CAMPAIGN ALLOWED TO APPEAL
The Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) has been given leave to appeal against a Court of Appeal decision that upheld the Government’s right to restrict Local Government Pension Schemes (LGPS) from divesting contrary to UK foreign and defence policy. The PSC expressed concern about threats to freedom of expression, government overreach in local democracy and the right of pension-holders to have a say in the investment and divestment of funds. The appeal, in the Supreme Court, is likely to be heard towards the end of the year.

HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL APPLICATION LODGED The planning application for the new Holocaust memorial in Victoria Tower Gardens, opposite Parliament, has been lodged with Westminster Council, as a petition against its construction in a Royal Park notched up 10,000 signatures. The £100million project, partfunded by the Government, is led by the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation, whose head – Sir Peter Bazelgette – has been asked by residents to choose an alternative location. Some Jewish peers and MPs have also expressed their opposition.
CINEMA’S FREE TICKET OFFER TO FAR-RIGHT A cinema is offering free tickets to a screening of Schindler’s List to members of the far-right Alternative for Germany party (AfD). The screening of the classic film, marking its 25th anniversary, is scheduled for 27 January – Holocaust Remembrance Day. Some members of the party view the offer from the Cinexx theatre in Hachenburg as a “tasteless instrumentalisation” and a “senseless provocation”. AfD leaders have dismissed the Nazi era as a “speck of bird poop”.
Mosque being ‘held to ransom’ A leading Muslim activist this week warned that “forward-thinking” members of his community are “held to ransom” after a mosque cancelled an exhibition about Muslim Albanians who helped Jews during the Holocaust over security threats and the event’s links with Yad Vashem. Calls for a boycott of Golders Green-based Centre for Islamic Enlightening – which had been due to hold the exhibition on Sunday to maintain dialogue with Jewish neighbours – were spearheaded by Roshan Salih, editor of British Muslim news site 5 Pillars over the event’s links to the Israel-based museum Centre for Islamic Englightening cancelled Shoah exhibit Yad Vashem. Rachel counts on Nick Countdown host Nick Hewer says he won’t vote Labour after Rachel Riley faced ‘blunt assaults’ for speaking out about antisemitism in the party. Hewer, who formerly served as Lord Alan Sugar’s right-hand man on The Apprentice, took to Twitter to defend co-host Riley, who is herself Jewish and has faced a barrage of slurs and insults on social media in recent months. He wrote: “As an Anglo-Irish lapsed Catholic, raises (sic) to abhor bigotry, I am astonished at blunt assaults and trickster arguments fired at my friend and colleague @RachelRileyRR for calling out anti Semitism in that once great Labour party which I have voted for since 1964. No more.” On Monday Riley used Twitter
to vent her own frustration at Heather Mendick, secretary of the Hackney South Labour Party, after she messaged Channel 4 and accused the Countdown star of “smearing political activists as racists on Twitter.” Sending a message in response to the Labour Party, Riley wrote: “You’ve admitted you have a problem with Antisemitism. Your leader has admitted you have a problem with antisemitism. One of your councillors is twisting my words to my employer to suit her own agenda. “If you still claim to be a legitimate
party – please make her stop”. Among others showing their support for Riley, Dragons’ Den star Deborah Meaden castigated Mendick for “telling tales”. She wrote: “Heather. Please stop it.
Politics is important, deserves respectful, responsible behaviour not poking your tongue out and telling tales. @RachelRileyRR is right and a grown up response would be appreciated.” Riley has also become embroiled in a Twitter spat with anti-Israel activist George Galloway, calling the failed politician “antisemite scum”. She wrote “F*** off George Galloway”, after he responded to one of her tweets, saying: “Dumbfounding. She... slanders half the Labour Party. 1980’s left-wing comedy icon and all round gent backs...her!”. The “gent” is Stephen Fry, who wrote: “I stand with you, Rachel x”.
Labour activists targeting JLM
A motion has been submitted to Lewisham West Labour Party suggesting the Jewish Labour Movement should be barred from conducting antisemitism training. JLM is the only organisation approved by the party to train members on the issue, although the controversial Jewish Voice for Labour has indicated it wants to expand its own programme. Far-left activists have now pushing for Lewisham West CLP to endorse a motion claiming JLM, the party’s only official Jewish affiliate for nearly a century, is “not an appropriate body” to serve this role. Their motion says: “It is only one body among others representing Jewish opinion within the party. “It is affiliated to organisations that promote racist practises in Israel/Palestine, and it takes a highly contentious view on the relationship between anti-Semitism and the struggle for equal rights in Israel/Palestine.” A JLM statement said: “Any CLP that goes out of its way to bar the only Jewish affiliate should be placed in special measures by the party.”
HASMONEAN CANCELS TALK BY CONVICTED KOSHER BOSS Hasmonean High School has cancelled a talk due to be given by an American Chasidic convicted of fraud but freed by Donald Trump. Former kosher slaughterhouse boss Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin, who had his 27-year sentence com-
muted by the US president after serving eight years behind bars, is due to speak around London during his five-day visit next week. Among the venues to have been booked was the Hendon school, but after concerns were raised, executive
headteacher Andrew McCluskey said it had withdrawn as host, saying he had no wish to be associated with the New Yorker, whose host of supporters, including Alan Dershowitz, say he was the victim of a miscarriage of justice. “Hasmonean cannot be associ-
ated with events of this kind and nor would we wish to be,” said McClusky, in response to a complaint raised by New North London Synagogue Rabbi Jeremy Gordon. “As soon as I was made aware of the nature of the event, I ensured that it was cancelled.”
Rubashkin, who has always staunchly maintained his innocence, was convicted of 86 counts of financial fraud including bank fraud, mail and wire fraud, and money-laundering. He is due to speak in Stamford Hill, Golders Green and Gateshead.

US BILLIONAIRE WINS GENESIS PRIZE The winner of the $1million prize once known as the ‘Jewish Nobel’ was revealed this week as another American billionaire. Robert Kraft, whose private company is one of the largest in the US, was announced as the next recipient of the Genesis Prize, which will be presented to him by the new Israeli prime minister in June. The prize aims to honour those who make an outstanding contribution to humanity.
PRO-EU MP CALLED NAZI BY BREXIT FANS Tory pro-EU MP Anna Soubry has hit out at Brexit protesters after being called a “Nazi” by a mob outside Parliament. The Board of Deputies condemned the incident, saying in a tweet it was “disgusting that Anna Soubry has been subjected to this vile abuse”. Commons Speaker John Bercow said he was “keeping a close eye on events” as he voiced concerns over incidents involving “aggressive and threatening behaviour” towards MPs, adding that female MPs had been subjected to “what many would regard as harassment”.
Israeli tech to map UK’s smart cities of the future Israeli technology is to be used to map Britain’s roads in preparation for smart cities and driverless cars, the Ordnance Survey mapping agency has announced. Intel’s Mobileye, an Israeli company bought by the tech giant for £12 billion in 2017, is partnering Britain’s national mapping agency to record vast amounts of data about the country’s road network in preparation for tomorrow’s technology. Ordnance Survey vehicles fitted with Mobileye cameras are set to criss-cross the nation’s arteries capturing highprecision information, such as the location of overhead cables, traffic lights, drain covers, lamp posts and road markings. It will even record plants and trees growing near the road network. The data will be important as the country moves to 5G broadband and as autonomous vehicles hit the roads, many fitted with Mobileye technology. “This new rich data will be key to how vehicles, infrastructure and people communicate in the digital age,” said Ordnance Survey interim chief executive officer Neil Ackroyd. “Our partnership with Mobileye

Twitter users have been sharing harrowing tales of antisemitism for the first time this week, in response to a rabbi’s online campaign. Zvi Solomons took to social media to ask online users about their first encounter of Jew hate, under the hashtag #FirstAntisemiticExperience, which has been shared hundreds of times. Among the tweets sent was from SwedishJewish journalist Annika H Rothstein, who said; “My #FirstAntisemiticExperience was in 7th grade; 6 neo-nazis at school stood next to my locker saying I should be turned into soap like ‘the others’. For three years they tormented me to the point where I ended up shaving off my big, curly hair, hoping to hide my ‘Jewishness’.” She included a striking picture of herself with a shaved head. Journalist James Masters said his first brush with hate “was in the playground at school, beaten up on the concrete as an eightyear-old by an older student while he shouted
‘F****** Jew.’ That was just the first time...” Joanne Bell weighed in, saying after a minor car accident with her parents aged five “police noted the other driver was called Cohen and (said we should) beware he would try to do them on the insurance as he was a Yid. My parents kept quiet. Mum cried afterwards.” Non-Jews also commented, with Anglican Priest Patrick Morrow tweeting: “At school in the mid-1980s. A pupil dropped loose change. I made to pick it up. He stopped me: ‘Don’t be a Jew.’” Speaking to Jewish News, Rabbi Solomons, of the Jewish Community of Berkshire in Reading, said he launched the hashtag “to show that the cruelty of antisemitism starts very early, and Jews can never escape it. It allows us to show how resilient we are, and to support each other and laugh at the stupidity of it. “Many people think antisemitism is a thing of the past, or not as serious as other forms of hatred, [but] it’s surprisingly persistent and pernicious.”
Orthodox rabbis set up group to examine Ofsted inspections Leading Orthodox rabbis have set up a working group to scrutinise Ofsted inspections for conduct and legality. The announcement from Chinuch UK represents the latest move in an ongoing war between religious Jews and the national inspectorate.
A series of recent downgrades has set the Orthodox establishment on a collision course with Ofsted, which maintains the legal necessity to teach children about ‘protected characteristics’, such as gender and sexuality. In a letter to mem-
bers, Chinuch UK Working Group chair Rabbi Nessanel Lieberman said they would be monitoring inspections, including “whether the independent schools standards have been properly interpreted and the judgements are lawful”.

SPATE OF GRAFFITI ATTACKS IN SHENLEY Police are investigating after a spate of antisemitic graffiti in Shenley. The words “Jew ghetto” and a star of David were found spray-painted on a fence in Porters Park Drive, near Shenley Chapel and on the chapel wall itself. Police said: “If anyone saw anything suspicious in the area or has information that may assist the investigation they are asked to contact us, quoting crime reference number ISR 137. Resident Michelle Spevick said “Having happily lived in this lovely community for nearly 15 years, I am just so sad.”
SWASTIKA PAINTED ON FENCE AT SYNAGOGUE Unidentified individuals painted a swastika on the fence of Ireland’s oldest active synagogue. The Coordination Forum for Countering Antisemitism revealed the incident on Wednesday in a report that featured a picture of the vandalised stone wall around the Dublin Hebrew Congregation synagogue. The report did not say when the swastika was painted. Communal farewell to a ‘towering figure’ One of Anglo-Jewry’s most influential leaders, Brian Kerner, has died aged 85, writes Jenni Frazer. A president of UJIA and former vice-president of the Zionist Federation, Brian was also chair of the Fair Play campaign group until 2016. A pharmacist who became managing director of the chemists’ chain Underwoods, he had many communal roles and is credited with helping to create Bicom, the Britain Israel Communications and Research Centre. After the Second Intifada in 2000, Brian, a former chair of the former Joint Israel Appeal, argued that there was the need “for a body able to orchestrate British Jewry’s political and public relations”. He also helped to bring Jewish Continuity on board to form UJIA, and served as the first chair of the merged charity between 1994 and 1998. 5 02/01/2019 UJIA 17:03:34 chief executive
Michael Wegier said Brian had been “passionate” about Israel, and was particularly involved in the organisation’s work in the Galilee. A primary school in Me’ona in the northern Galilee was re-named the Kerner School in honour of his work. Lord Kestenbaum, UJIA chief executive when Brian was chairman, said: “He was a towering figure of great distinction and immense charm; a leader who was uniquely respected, admired and loved right across British Jewry. He was a gracious, generous and compassionate man who enhanced our lives and illuminated the world.” Former Chief Rabbi Lord Sacks said: “Brian was one of the finest of our community leaders, committed to Israel, the Jewish people and the Jewish future. Elaine and I send condolences to his wife Sylvia and his children.” Brian was buried on Sunday.

Brian Kerner should best be remembered as one of British Jewry’s outstanding leaders, able to use his unique personality to achieve great things for Israel and the community. As chairman of JIA/UJIA (1994-8) he brought together the JIA and Jewish Continuity to create the new UJIA with its twin mission of rescuing Jews in distress from the FSU and Ethiopia and also renewing Jewish life in the UK. Then in 2002, BICOM was
created in Brian’s Hampstead home with its goal of helping to ensure a fair representation of Israel’s case in the media. David Cohen, who succeeded Brian as UJIA chairman, said it was a privilege to take it over UJIA after Brian left it in such good shape. Former chairman Sir Trevor Chinn said movingly: “Brian was a very special human being whose commitment to Israel and the community was astounding.”

New search for the Jewish dead of Bomber Command Second World War researchers are calling on Jewish families whose relatives fought and died while serving in Bomber Command to detail how their loved ones from around the world helped defeat Nazi Germany. A staggering 44 percent of the famous fighting unit’s 125,000 aircrew were killed, but no details on religion and ethnicity of the 58,000 who lost their lives were recorded. Now, after talking to several visiting Jewish families, Cathie Hewitt, an archivist and genealogist at the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln, is hoping to add this missing detail. “I decided to look into it after noticing how many Jewish visitors we were getting,” she says. “We’ve already identified 500 Jews who were killed while serving in Bomber Command, including

three Jamaican Jews, but we think there are many more to be identified.” Hewitt explained that the often-Anglicised names of Jewish fighters, plus the lack of ethnicity data, meant the true Jewish contribution to the defeat of Nazi Ger-
many was only now beginning to emerge. “No-one knows how many Jews died in the RAF’s Bomber Command, and of those we do know about, there is very little information,” she says. “However, families are now beginning to add details about the lives of those who served and share
photographs with us, and we want to hear from others.” Among examples unearthed by Hewitt is that of Cricklewood boy Norman Gorfunkle, who was shot down over France, but it wasn’t just British Jews who were involved. “For many Jews who came from mainland Europe, serving gave them the only opportunity available to take revenge on their persecutors,” she says. One foreign Jewish fighter was Canadian Joey Jacobson, killed on 28 January 1942. His father Percy said: “He hated the Germans for what they had done to his people and what they were trying to do to the liberty which meant more to him than his life.” Hewitt is keen to hear from families who lost Jewish relatives or friends who served in Bomber Command, along with their untold stories, photos, documents and memorabilia that can be recorded, scanned and preserved for future generations. SHOT DOWN AT 22: NORMAN’S STORY Hewitt learned of Norman Gorfunkle when his family visited the Lincoln centre. Born in Liverpool in 1920, Gorfunkle was the son of Jewish-Polish immigrants who arrived in the UK in the 1850s. His father died when Gorfunkle was 13, so the son moved back to London, where his mother was from, together with his sister Naomi, settling in Cricklewood in 1936. Gorfunkle volunteered for the RAF in 1940, aged 20. Two years later, his Halifax bomber was hit by flak above France and crashed. Gorfunkle was seriously injured and later died of his injuries and was buried in a local cemetery. Since the Germans did not know he was Jewish, the grave was inscribed with a cross. In 1948, his mother put a bag over the headstone and had a new one made with a Star of David. It was installed days later by the Commonwealth War Office. Thanks to his family, Norman’s collection of photographs, documents and the final letter he wrote to his sister a week before he was killed has now been digitally scanned for the Bomber Command Centre’s archive.

Brits’ escape files given to museum A British family which was among the last to flee the Nazis before the war has given Israel’s Holocaust museum a 1930s briefcase containing papers showing how British spy Frank Foley helped them to escape. Lion ‘Bob’ Rubin, who has lived in London since escaping aged two, was in Israel to take part in a ceremony at Yad Vashem to donate dozens of documents and photos including birth certificates, letters, memoirs and visas. Rubin’s sister, Daisy, was put on the Kindertransport after her Polish-born parents Samson and Ettel moved to Austria, then to Berlin, where they were living when the Nazis unleashed Kristallnacht. undercover in the Berlin Embassy as a passport control officer, issued the family with papers allowing them to escape, which they were able to do in August 1939, just 25 days before war was declared. The collection includes the family’s German passports
and identity cards from 1939, stamped with Nazi insignia and marked with a ‘J’ for Jews. The middle name ‘Israel’ was added to Samson’s name and his wife and daughter have the middle name ‘Sarah’ to identify them as Jews. “If it wasn’t for these visas, we all certainly would have died,” said Rubin, whose sister went to stay at a hostel in Sunderland before reuniting with the family in London. “I can’t know how hard it must have been for my parents to send their daughter away on the Kindertransport – not knowing if they would ever see her again. But we were the lucky ones. None of the other girls from Sunderland ever saw their parents again.”

ISRAELI GEM MINER’S MINERAL DISCOVERY An Israeli gem miner listed on the London Stock Exchange has announced that a mineral found in one of its gemstones has been recognised and approved as a new mineral by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA). Shefa Yamim says carmeltazite, a mineral found in its Carmel Sapphire, was found on Mount Carmel. Shefa Yamim has already received a trademark from the Israeli Government to market the stones under the name “Carmel Sapphire”. Chief executive Avi Taub said: “It is a unique discovery.”
AMAZON TO BUY ISRAELI STARTUP Amazon is buying the Israeli startup company CloudEndure for an estimated £190million. Through its subsidiary AWS, Amazon is the world’s biggest supplier of cloud services. CloudEndure, a cloud computing company founded six years ago, creates business software for disaster recovery, backup and live migration in the event of a system crash. The deal is expected to be announced in the coming few days.
Poetry in motion for Shani charity A schoolgirl has raised more than £2,500 for a charity set up in memory of her sister by selling copies of a poetry book compiled for her batmitzvah. Tammy Berman’s book, A Rainbow of Rhymes, includes poems such as Life is a Road and A Snippet of Inspiration, and is being sold to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital in memory of her sister Shani, who died aged five. Shani was born with a large hole in her heart and no valve linking her heart to her lungs, but doctors at the children’s hospital fitted a tiny Gore-Tex tube, allowing a “bossy, cheeky, funny, clever and beautiful girl” to live with a “magic heart”. Unfortunately, complications developed and her oxygen levels fell over several months, leading to risky surgery she did not survive. “We set up the Shine for Shani charity in memory of Tammy’s sister,” said mother Juliet Berman, whose supporters raised £2,000 by holding a New Year’s Day Fry-Up last week. Shul mental health scheme One of the UK’s biggest synagogues has launched a “groundbreaking” mental health initiative to help British Jews address a subject some still feel ashamed to discuss. Borehamwood & Elstree Synagogue (BES) said it was working with shul-goer and clinical psychologist Dr Judith Friedman to run the BES Cares Shabbat workshops, which will start on
26 January. They will cover areas such as mindfulness, an increasingly popular
psychological technique championed by the NHS that encourages people to “pay attention to the present moment”. Friedman will work with BES’s rabbinic team and qualified social worker Karen Moss to deliver the sessions, which the shul said “aims to develop the community’s ability to practise and talk about emotional well-being without fear of prejudice”.
FAITH GROUPS TACKLE HATE Religious leaders convened in Windsor this week to build an alliance in response to the rise of nationalism, populism and extremism. Senior representatives of faiths in the UK met at Cumberland Lodge under the auspices of the Council of Christians and Jews (CCJ) to hear from Holocaust survivor Dr Charlotte Knobloch, who said
their meeting was being held “against a backdrop of threats to Western democracy”. Last year, Cumberland Lodge and CCJ published a study guide on nationalism and populism from a faith perspective, to be referenced alongside Amy Buller’s book, Darkness over Germany: A Warning from History, which explores
how young people were drawn into National Socialism in the 1930s. CCJ director Elizabeth Harris-Sawczenko said: “As populism and extremism are on the rise, as hate crimes increase and attack faith identities in this country, it is imperative people of faith are part of a conversation to tackle the challenges of our own times.”

MALAYSIA REFUSES VISAS TO SWIMMERS Disabled Israeli swimmers fear they will be denied entry to Malaysia to take part in the World Para Swimming Championships in July. Israeli sports officials have been trying to obtain visas for two months without success, and now fear the decision has been influenced by Malaysia’s 93-year- old Prime Minister Mahathir bin Mohamad, who has been accused of antisemitism. More than 600 swimmers from 70 countries will take part in the tournament but Israel said its swimmers may be denied access.
BUS DRIVER INJURED IN WEST BANK ATTACK An Israeli public passenger bus came under fire while travelling in the West Bank from Jerusalem to Beit El. The attack after midnight on Sunday morning shattered the bus windshield and injured the driver. Israeli soldiers searched for the shooter or shooters, including on roads leading to Palestinian towns near the site of the attack. They reportedly entered the Palestinian city of al-Bireh, and are accused by Palestinian officials of injuring a Palestinian man during clashes there.
Israel ‘turning its back’ Doc threat to poison Jews on Ethiopian migrants Ethiopian Jews waiting to move to Israel are being taught Hebrew, Jewish law and Bible study by Israeli volunteers keen to help them, with representatives decrying Israel for “turning its back” on them. The volunteer-run classes are being offered to around 8,000 Jews still living in communities in the capital Addis Ababa and the northern city of Gondar, which was established by the Solomonic Emperors of Ethiopia in the 16th century. Israeli volunteers say graduates of the seminar programme will serve as teachers and hazzanim (prayer leaders) for Jews still waiting to move to Israel, while enrichment studies are being offered for synagogue leaders. BIBI ON ATTACK IN TELEVISION ADDRESS In a highly-anticipated TV address on Monday, Benjamin Netanyahu called for the chance to confront state witnesses preparing to testify against him in a long-running corruption investigation. Netanyahu said: “Announcing indictments against me before the election and before I have had a chance to respond… is unfair.” Analysts noted it was Netanyahu himself who brought the election forward by seven months, with Israelis now set to go to the polls on 9 April.

Israel lodges £196bn claim over exiles from Arab states The Israeli government is prepaering to lodge compensation claims totalling a staggering £196 billion ($250bn) against seven Arab countries plus Iran which forced Jews to leave their homes after 1948. In an extraordinary legal move 18 months in the making, Israeli ministers are about to lodge the first two of the claims – for £27.5 billion ($35bn) and £11.7bn ($15bn) – for lost Jewish assets in Tunisia and Libya. Analysts estimate that around 850,000 Jews were forced to leave their homes around the Middle East after the establishment of the state of Israel, often with no compensation. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began calling for recompense in 2014. The countries Israeli ministers are targeting include Iraq, Syria, Morocco, Yemen and Egypt, but are understood not to include Lebanon or Algeria. Palestinian leaders have previously submitted claims for about £78.4bn for Palestinian land seized

While unable to comment on the details, Harif – the UK Association of Jews from the Middle East and North Africa – welcomes the demand by Israel’s Minister for Social Equality, Gila Gamliel, for compensation to Jewish refugees from Arab countries and Iran. A greater number of Jews fled Arab countries than Palestinians from Israel. Most arrived destitute after abandoning billions in property and assets. Arab countries have never recognised these Jews as refugees. A 2010 Knesset law commits Israel to secure compensation for Jewish refugees in a peace settlement. It is imperative the claims be on the agenda of President Trump’s peace plan. Harif supports the idea of an International Fund, first mooted by President Bill Clinton, to compensate individual refugees on both sides – Arab and Jewish. The 50.2 percent of Israel’s Jews who descend from refugees forced out by Arab and Muslim persecution cannot reasonably be asked to approve a peace plan that provides rights and redress for Palestinian refugees only.

To be or not to Bibi? Under fire from all sides, Benjamin Netanyahu should be in a political hole. But he’s not, writes Ben Sales
I
sraeli police want him to be indicted in three separate corruption cases. He’s assailed from left and right for his attacks on Gaza and his policy in the West Bank. He’s made a point of cosying up to controversial right-wing nationalist leaders, from Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro to Hungary’s Viktor Orban – and especially to Donald Trump. Many American Jewish leaders say his policies are driving away Diaspora Jews. And if April’s Israeli election were held today, Benjamin Netanyahu would almost definitely win, for the fourth time in a row, probably in a landslide. Why? Because enough Israelis trust him with their security. To his voters, everything else is commentary. “They think that if he may have received bribes or played with Israel’s telecom market to have personal gain, this has nothing to do with the way he confronts Iran or the way he handles things in Syria,” says Israeli political journalist Tal Schneider, referring to some of the corruption allegations against Netanyahu. “In Israel, you win elections on security issues only.” Polls ahead of the 9 April election give Netanyahu’s Likud a wide lead over a growing group of opponents. Likud is projected to win around 30 seats in the 120seat Knesset, putting Netanyahu in the best position to form a ruling coalition. Netanyahu’s international critics – the UN, European Union, the former Obama administration, liberal American Jewish groups, liberal newspapers – have portrayed him as too aggressive in Gaza, too cavalier with the lives of Palestinian civilians and unwilling to make peace with the Palestinian Authority, not to mention his policies on African asylum seekers, religious pluralism in Israel or the status of Arab Israelis. But in Israel, polls show most Jews think Netanyahu is not aggressive enough in Gaza. In November, his defence minister resigned, complaining Netanyahu was too risk-averse in deploying the military. When it comes to the army, his centrist rivals have only tried to talk tougher than the prime minister. Two former Israeli generals, both chiefs of staff, have founded new parties this year specifically to oppose Netanyahu. But so far, neither is attacking him directly on security issues. Moshe Yaalon, one of Netanyahu’s former defence ministers, says his party would represent “the good, values-based, cleanhanded land of Israel.” Benny Gantz, a former general, has only just begun to open up about his platform. In a television interview, he said he would leave several West Bank settlement blocs in place but that an agreement with the Palestinians would bolster Israel’s security. “We need established, ongoing efforts, in light of any challenge, to reach a diplomatic accord, with the understanding that this is part of our resilience, this is part of our security,” Gantz said. “There needs to be a real diplomatic effort, without being suckers and without being irresponsible.” A chorus of other candidates has also failed to match Netanyahu at the polls. Yair Lapid, a one-time TV star and finance minister who leads the centrist Yesh Atid Party, has a strong base but hasn’t been
able to broaden his appeal. The oncerobust Labour Party, headed by former telecom executive Avi Gabbay, is mired in the single digits. Netanyahu’s main problems lately have been the potential indictments against him and a growing aura of corruption. Former prime minister Ehud Olmert, who ended up going to prison, resigned before police recommended that he be indicted. But Netanyahu shows no signs of backing down. He has vowed to remain even if charged formally with a crime. Will that cost him the election? Probably not. Netanyahu frequently demonises the Israeli press, often claiming like Trump that negative articles are “fake news”. At this point, one observer wrote, Israelis are just tired of the back-and-forth. Netanyahu’s opponents, as well as government watchdogs, have called his decisions dangerous to Israel’s democracy. But if Israelis are feeling squeamish, it isn’t showing in the polls. “There’s so much news about Netanyahu’s investigations that they don’t take it seriously anymore,” the same critic noted. Netanyahu’s last election campaign, in 2015, was also plagued with scandal – though he was not indicted. Leading up to Election Day, it appeared he could lose. But he pulled off a comeback, emerging stronger position than before. And the longer he stays in power, Schneider says, the more inevitable his victories seem. In Israel, there are no term limits. “The people of Israel don’t see anyone else in Israel who can do it,” she adds. “With the time passing, he’s getting stronger and stronger because when you sit in that chair you’re the incumbent. You can use all the facilities available to keep promoting yourself.”

At peace, at last There can be few more phenomenal stories in recent years than that revealed today – a piece of earth, taken from Auschwitz by a Holocaust survivor years ago, found to contain the remains of Jews who will now be buried at Bushey Cemetery. You can look at this molecularly, but not a single Jew will do so. In terms of symbolism and emotion, it doesn’t come much bigger. That one was a child only adds weight to an already overbearing strain. The service next Sunday will be too much for some, but a duty for all, to remember – in this clod of earth – the people killed, whose earthly fragments for years made up the very subsoil of this site of shame. There will be words, of course, but it is a day for action, for burying those who never had that dignity, for reaffirming our Jewish heritage and the direct line to those who died for their own. It will be a day for silence and reflection. Jews know that the horrors of Auschwitz can in part be laid to rest by educating a world that will always be susceptible to its oldest hatreds. Few of us imagined that we could lay to rest those who died in the very horrors we teach. On Sunday, 20 January we can, and will. See you there.
Faith restored Almost every week we cover an interfaith story, and almost every week it feels like the faiths came together at least in part to be seen to come together – interfaith for interfaith’s sake. Sometimes – as in the case of Golders Green mosque being forced to scrap its exhibition honouring Muslims who helped Jews in the Holocaust – even this can be a bridge too far. Seldom do we have the pleasure of covering a story of Jews and Muslims working together to do good simply because they can, but that’s what we saw last week, at a mosque-based day camp for children traumatised by the Grenfell Tower fire. These young Jews and Muslims have worked together for so long now on so many issues that their combination simply felt like the natural extension of a now-deep relationship, their reason for coming together nothing whatsoever to do with the need to come together, but because they can do more together than separately, and because they – whisper it – actually like each other. That’s what true interfaith should feel like. This shul and mosque have shown us a model for future relations. We hope others take note.

OUR TERM, RECLAIMED WITH PRIDE I do not know why there is such a fuss over Tottenham Hotspur fans’ use of the words, “Yid”, “Yiddo” or “Yid Army”. And I take special offence that an organisation such as the US-based World Jewish Congress (WJC) – whose knowledge of English “soccer” could probably be written on the back of a postage stamp – has butted in. I am shocked, too, that the Board of Deputies felt the need to support the WJC on this. I am certain there are plenty of deputies who are Spurs fans who have no problem with Yid. As one of the many thou-
sands of Jewish Spurs fans who are proud to be Yids, I wonder if the WJC has waded into the argument that Afro-Americans should use the N-word. Note I do not use the N-word because I am not an AfroAmerican or Afro-Caribbean. Like them, we reclaimed the term with pride. If Jewish Chelsea, West Ham or Arsenal fans have a problem with it being used pejoratively by their own supporters, let them stand up to them at Stamford Bridge, the London Stadium or the Emirates. Everyone seems to be outraged at the latest round of Labour antisemitism, involving Countdown hosts Rachel Riley and Nick Hewer, but I don’t understand it. The community has moreor-less severed ties to the Labour Party. We won’t be voting Labour en masse at the next election. Why are we flogging a dead horse? Let Labour self-implode over Brexit and let it sink in that they’ve lost the trust of our community. Stop engaging with them, and stop feeding their troll army of hateful online Jew-baiters. They want us to react to their nonsense and we have to just ignore them. It’s time for some
silent treatment. I feel completely politically homeless, and by engaging with Labour over antisemitism, all we’re doing is giving the party false hope that we may give them our support. I certainly won’t be! We have a Conservative government, which is about as useful as a chocolate teapot, and which has ingested many of the harsh and nasty elements of UKIP. Our country is divided – and being run by people who don’t know what they’re doing, but we must not let Corbyn and his mob through the door amid the chaos.

I recall attending a football match at White Hart Lane and hearing Tottenham supporters chanting: “We sang it in France. We sang it in Spain. We sing in the sun, we sing in the rain. The thing I love most, is being a Yid.” In their number were a) non-Jews who would risk arrest for using such a vile racial slur if uttered outside the stadium and b) Jews who know not what they do. I’m the proud director of Lubavitch in Scotland for almost 50 years and am deeply shocked at your coverage of Sholom Mordechai Rubashkin and all the shmutz you chose to write about this man in your recent edition (Jewish News, 4 January). Mr Rubashkin has helped thousands of people over time, was victim to a totally distorted antisemitic trial and you as a Jewish newspaper choose to pour acid on his wounds. This man has a special needs child – how dare you be so harsh on him? Let us see a front page apology to him, his family, Lubavitch, and indeed the Jewish community at large.

I found Mr Ballen’s letter to be gloating in the extreme. People who brag about those who may or may not be Jewish should first look into their own Jewishness, past and present, before talking about others. Mr Ballen may believe he is ‘Jewish’ but perhaps he should investigate his own and his family’s
halachic status going back around, say, a couple of generations, before so eagerly exclaiming with reference to Mr Raab “... but Jewish he is not” In any case, what’s so special about being a Jew? I am a Sephardic Jew, and a Cohen and, according to Mr Ballen’s reckoning, a Jew! I am no better than any non-Jew although many so-called Jews purport to claim they are, as Jews are ‘special’. Stop throwing stones, Mr Ballen. You live in a glass house.

Charedi leaders should look at the economics ALEX BRUMMER

n acquaintance used to hold a senior role in the social services department of the Jerusalem municipality. She couldn’t talk about individual cases, but what she had to say was fairly shocking. Many of us have an idealised view of the Charedi world one of large, supportive families, great Torah scholarship, high ethical standards and joy in their Judaism. But it turned out that much of the workload of her department was in the Charedi community. This was partly owing to economic hardship. The data collected by the Paris-based Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development shows that amid the prosperity in Israel, the gap between the better off in society and the poorest is among the highest is this group of nations. The scale of the deprivation at the bottom of society is ascribed to Charedi Jews – some of whom have excluded themselves from the mainstream workforce – and the Bedouin

Arabs in the Negev. But it was not just socio-economic deprivation Jerusalem social services had to deal with. There were a variety of broader societal problems, including the welfare of children from broken marriages; bullied and battered wives and alleged child and sexual abuse. In other words, many of the same problems found in broader society but, because of the community’s closed nature, much more complex to deal with. Popular culture has of late been trying to get to grip with some of this. The Yiddish language movie Menashe, set in Brooklyn, provided what a Guardian reviewer described as “a humane and unsentimental character study of a man struggling to take care of his son after his wife’s
death”. The film, directed by Joshua Z Weinstein, focuses on the life of a schlimazel, an unlucky man, who wants to look after his child after the death of his spouse. But Charedi tradition dictates that he cannot care for the child on his own and the child is forced to live with family members until he remarries. The struggle to retain the bond with his son is painful to watch. Similarly, we learn of the social dysfunction and narrow minded attitudes of strictlyOrthodox north London Jewry in Disobedience (based on the Naomi Alderman novel), which examines a forbidden lesbian relationship. What is striking about the well-reviewed film starring Rachel Weisz are the unsparing attitudes of neighbours and friends and the willingness to condemn and exclude on the basis of hearsay. The latest contribution to this genre is Israeli series Shtisel, now showing on Netflix with English subtitles. We are treated to the colourful street scenes of devout men in long black coats, streimels and beautifully-tended side locks and the camaraderie of Torah study. But beneath the surface of the Jerusalem Orthodox community, we are exposed to a Charedi Coronation Street.
The mother of five who has to work as the cleaner for an uptight secular Jewess because her husband, while on duty as meat supervisor in Argentina, runs off with a nonJewish woman. The rabbinical son who falls in love with an older Orthodox women, but is encouraged to become engaged to the spoiled, weeping daughter from a good family. There is also a rabbinical widower buying his kosher pot noodles and wholly inept at wooing one of his colleagues. There is an outcast single brother-in-law selling lottery tickets. And the rabbi who cheers the death of an elderly and venerated colleague because it creates a possible job opening for the son who would rather be an artist… and so it goes on. All of these cultural expeditions are sensitively produced and authentic. But the combined effect is to undermine confidence in the value systems, the ethics and the practices of what in Israel, the UK and the United States is the fastest growing brands of Judaism. There is so much to admire in Charedi devotion to study, Torah and to family life. But the weak social and economic underpinnings provide a real challenge for community leaders, wherever they may be.

srael has a particularly bad case of electoral system confusion. Does the largest party win? The answer is not so clear, but for the centre-left, especially, the question is now critical. If its leaders are smart and selfless, they will move to unite in a strategic way, for the 9 April vote. It’s unlikely but, all over the world, social media has upended behaviours, change has twisted minds, and radicalisation has upended politics. Electoral systems cannot meet new needs, authoritarianism gains support, and unconstructive ambiguity is the order of the day. Americans wrestle with the fact the “popular vote” is meaningless, yet the system cannot realistically be changed. Britain treats “hung parliaments” like a national disgrace, yet they’re becoming the norm. In France, it isn’t clear whether the president or parliament is in charge. Is Russia in any way a democracy? Is China a one-man dictatorship? The army seems in charge in half the world, but maybe no one is. The planet is a puzzle, and not in a good way. In Israel, it was axiomatic that it doesn’t
matter which party is the largest. All the groups fit into either left or right blocs. The centre-left (and Arab parties) wanted justice for the Palestinians, or demographic salvation for the Jews, or both. The right (and religious parties) wanted dominion over all the Holy Land for military, nationalistic or religious reasons, and was willing to undermine democracy. All other issues were secondary and in the end all that mattered was which bloc had more seats (at least 61 of the 120). The most recent evidence of this was in 2009, when Tzipi Livni’s centrist Kadima won slightly more seats than Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud. She declared victory but Netanyahu seemed unfazed. The right-religious bloc had a solid majority, and how each side’s component parties broke down was irrelevant. In 2019, though, the largest party will matter. The splits in the left are such that the latest polls convincingly show three parties of roughly equal size: Labor led by Avi Gabbay; Yesh Atid led by Yair Lapid; and the new grouping of ex-military chief Benny Gantz. Together, they add up to the same number of seats as Netanyahu’s Likud, or perhaps just a few more. This is because while there are splits in the right-religious bloc as well, none of them has prevented Likud from remaining

When one side has a large anchor party and the other is so divided, the subjective question of legitimacy becomes relevant. Even if the centre-left somehow won 61 seats this way, it may not hold. It is easy to see one of the parties joining Likud as the “winner” and giving Netanyahu the steering wheel. If not for his tragicomic legal troubles, this scenario would be almost assured. Second, there are now significant players whose left-right identity is fluid. Orly Levy (of the new-old “social issues” party, Gesher) may well feel a greater legitimacy to prefer the party whose vote total was more than double that of any of the others. This may also be true of Moshe Kahlon of Kulanu, who in 2015 was a Likud Trojan horse only pretending to be on the fence. Now this positioning may be more genuine, and he is attracting some classic leftist figures. A union of the entire centre-left risks
repelling the coveted disgruntled Likud electorate by including genuinely progressive figures in its ranks, even if the Arabs are kept distinct. The extreme level of crystallisation almost guarantees Likud a win. And yet there is a certain logic to running in a few distinct groups, to maximise the overall vote by giving most people a party to back that is free of components giving offence. So if they want a shot against Likud only three must remain: The Arab List, the left, and the centre. The latter probably has the best chance of being an anchor party with enough seats to come close enough to Likud to make the blocs maths relevant again. Will either Lapid and Gantz be ready to serve as defence or foreign minister under the other? If not, they may find themselves in that same position under Netanyahu in a few months. And while that may look like an improvement in dark times, it would also be an opportunity wasted.

Legacy of Israel’s great writer, reader, dreamer LIAM HOARE JOURNALIST
S
usan Sontag once defined herself as ‘a writer, reader, and a dreamer’ who dwelt upon ‘how things could be better, deeper, more intense, more wonderful.’ A better summation of a life could not be found for Amos Oz, who died on 28 December at the age of 79 and without whom, as David Grossman told the Guardian, the world has diminished and narrowed down. Oz wrote in precarious times. Early stories like Where the Jackals Howl and Elsewhere, Perhaps saw the kibbutz’s fragility, while My Michael and The Hill of Evil Counsel conjured Jerusalem, the city of Oz’s birth, as few others have. His finest novels – Black Box and especially Fima and Don’t Call It Night – encompassed the whole of Israel while keeping human relationships at the centre of restless and uncertain narratives. Oz’s 2002 master-
piece A Tale of Love and Darkness, one family’s tumult wrapped in historical saga, unlocks the rest of his novels. Later stories returned to places and pathways he had walked before in his novels and dreams: Jerusalem and the kibbutz. Between Friends, interwoven stories set on a kibbutz in the 1950s, is perhaps my favourite of his novels. With time his prose became more succinct and economical, saying more with less. He did not suffer the fate of so many other novelists: the loss of literary gift before the loss of life. Oz served in wars of life and death and remained a committed public intellectual. His essays, especially 1967’s The meaning of homeland, stood for a form of socialist Zionism, centred on the redemption of people and not land that was muscular yet humanistic, forward-facing but rooted, both visionary and realistic. His metaphors for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict have become part of popular discourse, most famously, that a divorcing couple who nonetheless must find a way to cohabit the same house.

AMOS OZ SERVED IN WARS OF LIFE AND DEATH AND REMAINED A COMMITTED PUBLIC INTELLECTUAL
I feel fortunate not only to have read Amos Oz but met him too. His daughter, the historian Fania Oz-Salzberger, first suggested the idea. I was trepid, for one should never meet one’s heroes – a fool’s caution, as it turned out. On a January afternoon in 2016 with the sun setting beyond the Mediterranean’s edge, Oz and I sat in his study discussing his life and work for almost two hours. Oz was warm and generous, more than happy to indulge my curiosity but at the same time, as any teacher should, willing to correct when necessary – for example, when I used the word ‘fiction’, which he hated. This conver-
sation was one of the great pleasures of my writing life. We met a final time a year later at an event in Tel Aviv for a book of conversations, What Is in an Apple? Awaiting the English translation, I’m life with a deathly silence. As we go through life trying on writers like outfits, Oz was the one that fit. I often thought that no one could have derived greater pleasure from a new Amos Oz novel than I did. Writer, reader, dreamer, Oz’s prose did indeed make life better and deeper, more intense and wonderful. Now the world seems denuded – deprived not only of his perceptiveness and moral clarity but the opportunity to hear it pronounced. Yet the end is not quite the end. Amos Oz witnessed the birth of Israel, fought twice to defend it, loved it even when he didn’t like it, and shaped its rich and ever-evolving language. And from my desk I can see a half metre of paperback books bearing his name that will be a source of truth, beauty and wisdom forever. Mosque is targeted by fanatics on both sides GABRIEL WEBBER

W
hen I moved from south London, where I’d been the only Jewish person in my school, to Golders Green to begin my rabbinic training, I was able to look out of my window and see, over the road, Muslims of all ages going happily in and out of their new mosque and having their spiritual needs fulfilled. The mosque had come to the area around the same time as me, and I exchanged emails with the people running it. I’d have dropped them a line in any event, to welcome them, but sadly I also felt obliged to write to them to apologise. To apologise for the relentless campaign of bullying to which the mosque had been subjected by Jewish extremists determined to keep Golders Green a Muslim-free area. The mosque’s planning application was swamped with hate-filled objections, from spurious concerns about the impact on parking to claims the centre’s new occupiers were “funded by al-Qaeda” and “might keep
missiles in the building”. My favourite objection expressed doubts about how “these Muslims” had obtained their new premises: “Has money changed hands?” it asked. Well, probably, yes – that’s quite common when land is bought. The whole episode left a very nasty taste in the mouth. How delighted I was, then, when the mosque confounded all its opponents’ fears by reaching out a hand of friendship to the Jewish community, participating in Mitzvah Day projects for two years running and – last month – announcing a Holocaust memorial exhibition about righteous Muslims who saved Jews’ lives. The poor mosque community. As soon as they reached out a hand of friendship to the Jewish community, they began to be bullied by a different set of extremists. Muslim extremists, this time, who could not stand the idea of a mosque working with Jews. A Mitzvah Day project to make chicken soup for London’s homeless was, apparently, a Zionist conspiracy. The Holocaust exhibition was also, unimaginatively, a Zionist conspiracy (because all those Muslims who stood up to the Nazis between the years 1939 and 1945 were obviously in the pay of the state of Israel, established in, er, 1948). But Jewish extremists had something to say about the exhibition too. The anti-mosque
campaign’s Twitter account suggested it was an “offensive” way of “invoking the Holocaust”. The mosque has called off the exhibition, at least for the time being. I wanted to see it, but it’s always a shame to see an organisation give in to bullying. It was the wrong decision, but it’s hard to blame the mosque: it has been relentlessly persecuted by fanatics from both sides. Each side hates the other’s guts. One wants a Golders Green with no Jews in it; the other the reverse. And yet they’re in agreement on wanting no Muslim-Jewish co-operation. These two groups both sow hatred and division because they’re united in, bizarrely, fearing a happy society where everyone gets along. Each group represents the worst of its religion, a perversion of the teachings of peace and tolerance that characterise both Judaism and Islam. Instead of pursuing peace and

tolerance, they both are importing high-level global political issues into a small area of north London, adding a nasty twist of racism, and seeking to foment division on the streets. Those of us of any or no faith who are not willing to see our Golders Green contaminated by outside extremists must offer the mosque our support. Tell it how much we appreciate it holding events for the whole community. Wish it well on Muslim festivals. Invite its leadership for tea. Stress we’d like to see the exhibition rescheduled and that we’ll visit it and show our support. Anyone crazed enough to believe that a Holocaust memorial is a Zionist conspiracy, or that all Muslims stockpile munitions, is not going to be dissuaded. The best we can do is give the mosque the strength and support it needs to stand up to the bullying from both sides and continue to build the bridges its leaders clearly yearn to.

Young Jami has hosted its launch event, Light’s On, at the Light House in Shoreditch for 150 young professionals. The committee, chaired by Gabi Mendelsohn, is made up of 11 members in their early 20s to 30s who are all passionate about mental health and want to raise awareness among young adults. The event’s theme was “bringing light to mental health”. Mendelsohn said: “Mental illness, just like physical illness, can affect anyone. We all know someone, or personally may be struggling with a mental illness – it is definitely an issue that affects us all.” Labour MP Louisa Berger was the guest speaker.

The emergency services – fire, ambulance and police – who remained on duty to protect us over the holiday period have not been forgotten by St Albans United Synagogue members. The children made new friendships with peers from across the country and were led by passionate madrichim eager to impart knowledge and enthusiasm for religious Zionism. Children have raised money for fertility charity Chana, holding their own Tea-cember over the winter holidays, during which they decorated cupcake boxes and cupcakes. Meanwhile, almost 50 young professional women gathered together to enjoy a group Tea-cember in aid of the charity. Attendees heard from therapist Nomy Cohen on the emotional and physical journey a couple goes through during a single round of IVF and how they can be supported by the charity’s work. The event raised more than £2,500.

The Kosher London Beth Din (KLBD) held a Mashgichim Conference for rabbinic inspectors, who supervise food products, raw materials and ingredients in factories worldwide. The conference was attended by dayanim, rabbonim, mashgichim and the Certification Unit office team. The first session of the day was an open forum – led by Rabbi Jeremy Conway, director of KLBD, and Rabbi Akiva Osher Padwa, director of Certification – where the Mashgichim were given an opportunity to address and discuss their concerns and asked questions of the panel.

Kenton Synagogue has been holding a range of celebratory events and Shabbatot in honour of its 70th anniversary. The year culminated in its 70th anniversary gala dinner held on the last night of Chanukah.
More than 90 women gathered at Mill Hill for a ‘We Are Women’ event. Among the speakers were a dietician, child psychiatrist, GP, breast diagnostic radiographer and a life coach with the aim of tackling some very difficult, life-changing, life-affirming, and challenging topics affecting women and children.

More than a dozen United Synagogue (US) communities spent the winter break helping vulnerable people in their local area. Volunteers cooked for people in need and delivered chocolates to staff at hospitals, hospices, care homes and fire stations to show the community’s gratitude. They also wrapped and delivered toys that had been generously donated for the US Chesed Toy Drive to vulnerable children at women refuges and to children at the US Asylum Seeker Centres. Many of the synagogues were matched with shelters in their own area. This year the recipients of the food included Solace Women’s Aid, Hestia, The Marylebone Project, Barnet Winter Shelter Scheme, Watford’s New Hope, and GIFT. The projects were a joint venture between a local US synagogue, the US Chesed department and Tikun’s Light Up a Life programme. The scheme also included a speaker from Tikun or the Chesed department, who spoke about chesed and kindness. Orah Barnett, US Chesed liaison officer, said: “Thank you to everyone who took part, you exemplify the middah of chesed, the Jewish value of showing kindness.

The suit that saved Jews of Denmark Alexander Bodin Saphir’s play is based on the ‘miracle rescue’ of more than 7,000 lives during the war, writes Jenni Frazer
T
he high-ranking Nazi official looked at himself in the mirror and smiled, as he stood inside the tiny tailor’s shop in the redlight district of Copenhagen. It was autumn 1943, and he was pleased with the bespoke suit made for him by a young Jewish tailor. At other times, a satisfied customer might have offered a tip, but in this case it was a tip-off – and one that more than likely saved the lives of just over 7,000 Danish Jews. On the day before Rosh Hashanah in 1943, following a warning from a leading Nazi official, Marcus Melchior, Denmark’s acting chief rabbi, told his community there would be no services. “Go home and sort out your affairs,” he said, “and then find any way you can to flee.” The majority of those who took heed escaped a Nazi round-up and were smuggled by the resistance over to Sweden, where they lived out the remaining years of the Second World War in peace. Rosenbaum’s Rescue, a new play 15 years in the making, is a fictionalised account of that remarkable story. But as playwright Alexander Bodin Saphir explains, the “miracle rescue” is a story he knows well, having been born to a Danish-Jewish mother. He says: “My grandparents, Raphael (Folle) and Sara (Fanny) escaped to Sweden with their baby daughter, Lis, just under two, in their arms. They would never speak about it, but I had always known about the ‘miracle rescue’. It is part of the mythology of Denmark itself, that Danish Jews were largely saved from the Holocaust.” But as Saphir explains, not everything is as black and white as previously thought. One well-known story is that the Danish King,

Christian X, wore the Naziimposed yellow star in solidarity with his country’s Jewish community. As historians have debated, this would have been a very nice gesture, except it wasn’t true – because Denmark’s Jews did not wear the yellow star. The central figure in Denmark’s delicate relationship with the Third Reich was a clever lawyer, Dr Werner Best, who was not only deputy head of the SS and a key member of Hitler’s inner circle, but the overall commandant of Denmark after the Nazi invasion of 1940. “Denmark did not collaborate with the Nazis as such. But you could say, in a low-key way, there was co-operation”. That was something set in place by farsighted members of the Danish government, who were aware resistance from such a small country was bound to end with a very brutal attitude by the Germans. Instead there was a “softly-softly” policy. Best himself, known as “the Butcher of Paris” for his attitude towards French Jews, presided over a Denmark where Danish Jews faced none of the restrictions faced by other Jews in Nazi-occupied Europe. Nevertheless, by the summer of 1943 there was an increased resistance in Denmark – and Hitler was not happy. To send a message of the level of Nazi displeasure, it was announced that anyone
caught defying the regime would be tried in German courts — and face the death penalty. In response, the Danish parliament resigned en masse. The stage was set for a sharper crackdown – and that was to make an example of the country’s Jews, by rounding them up for deportation. “The round-up was scheduled for Rosh Hashanah, because the Germans figured all the Jews would be at home,” says Bodin Saphir. The subsequent “miracle rescue” became part of the wider Danish narrative, “that we as Danes rose up as one and helped save our Jewish brothers and sisters”. But that, as Bodin Saphir discovered, was not the whole story. It was certainly true that Denmark’s Jews were saved, to an extent, by virtue of the fact they were regarded as Danish first by the rest of the population. The other crucial element was that the “miracle rescue” could not have taken place without advanced warning from various Nazi officials. That is how Rabbi Melchior was able to tell people; and the round-up itself was nothing like other round-ups elsewhere in Europe. Soldiers were instructed to knock on doors and not break them down or smash windows. In at least one case, a family slept through the entire round-up. Folle, Bodin Saphir’s grandfather, was a proud and dedicated member of the
Danish Home Guard. “On 27 September 1943, he went to his local office and told them he was leaving for a foreign country and so had to resign.” He also happened to be a tailor – and Saphir now knows the high-ranking Nazi official who liked his suit so much was Commandant Best. First, his customer measurements survived the war and were found in the tailor’s shop by Saphir’s cousin, Margit; and, second, that 27 September was two days before the warnings of the round-up. Strange, but true, Best’s bespoke-made suit by a Jewish tailor may well have saved the Danish-Jewish community. Rosenbaum’s Rescue runs at Park Theatre, Finsbury Park, until 9 February. In the shadow of Grenfell Tower, children traumatised by the tragedy play in a mosque during a camp part-run by young Jews. Until now, journalists have been barred. As young jaws drop, a youth leader enters. “I’m looking for a rogue parachute,” he says, rummaging. A minute later around 30 children pile in to ride the ‘spaceship,’ which comprises foil wrapped around chairs and a lot of imagination. The noise they make when ‘taking off ’ overlaps with the muezzin’s call to prayer. This is the start of the four-day Ma’un (Little Blessings) play camp for children aged four-to-12 who were affected by Grenfell, the tower whose covered remains still stand half a mile away. first being held in December 2017, when everything was still very raw. “We had children asking us why should they be able to play when their friends who died couldn’t,” says Ismahan Egal, a welfare coordinator at the mosque. “It almost became our job to tell them it was OK to have fun.” The NHS offers some support, she says, but the shul and the mosque decided to fill a gap for down-time for the children. “Some of these children were in the tower, others saw it burn, others lost friends,” says Egal. “Many go to the local school and their playground is literally in the tower’s shadow. In one way or another, all the children here today wear the banner of Grenfell.” Last year, Grenfell was all the children talked about, she says. “The fire had just happened and we were still in the crisis-management phase. Children were drawing pictures of burning buildings, talking about it non stop, building towers with play-bricks then knocking them down, the same with food, piling carrots up then knocking them down, a lot of repetitive behaviour. It was all-consuming. We spoke about it as leaders. “If you see a child traumatised by Grenfell draw a picture of a burning building, it’s tempting to step in, to protect them. But the child finds it cathartic, and by sharing it with an adult, that’s their way of inviting somebody else to share their experience. It was as if they needed this safe space.” Helping creating that are Hannah, Ilana, Carla, Ellie, Jessica, Jo, Livia, Alon and Sofi, all young progressive Jews, most of whom have led Jewish youth programmes for Masorti, Reform or Liberal Judaism. “Those programmes are very structured and what we’re doing here is much more akin
to that,” says Sofi, a former RSY-Netzer leader and now a social worker. “Last year we had a box of toys including a fire truck. It was by far the most popular toy. We had a lot of children being firefighters, making fire engine noises. Many still have trauma responses. Different things trigger them in different ways.” In the main hall, to one side, children are designated as bananas, apples, melons or oranges. In another area, paint and stencils are being laid out on the floor. The nine Jewish youth leaders are working with four peers from the mosque, as well as three refugees – young adults from Sudan, Albania and Syria. Two dress up – as a tiger and as a unicorn –

while Jamal, 17, by far the quietest of the three, keeps an eye out for children who don’t want to participate. One young girl stands mournfully in the corner, refusing to join in. “The first year we saw a lot of that,” Egal says. “We would rush over, but now we know it’s just their way of getting space.” Sure enough, the youngster rejoins activities 10 minutes later, plaiting another girl’s hair. Overseeing activities is Nic Schlagman, an outreach worker at The West London Synagogue of British Jews (WLS), who worked with Egal to set up the camp. “We were working with Al-Manar on night shelters when the fire happened,” he says. “Suddenly all this energy was mobilised and the mosque found itself as a local hub. Donations, volunteers, victims, all came here. It was bedlam – lots of well-meaning people but no systems. “I drew on my experience in humanitarian aid to help and we sent about 15 volunteers. Money came into the shul but we saw people throwing money around in the early days, so we waited to let the situation settle down, to work out how we could best add value.” In the weeks that followed, the opportunity became clear. “There was great stuff happening on a therapeutic level, but on another level there was this expectation that the children would be sad, behave in a certain way, hold this identity,” Schlagman says. “They didn’t have a space to have fun, relax, be silly... be kids. That’s when we realised we could help. The Jewish community has this great skill of training young adults to be youth leaders. It was something we could bring. The
mosque realised that there was a real benefit to creating a warm, comfortable play-space. That’s how the idea of the day camp was born.” Alon, who is about to start work as a Wellbeing Practitioner at Yavneh College, calls the kids to a halt and asks if anyone wants lunch. Cue a stampede to the door, a mass of flying pigtails, bright hoodies and furry boots as Rabbi Sybil Sheridan manages to dodge the scrum. She knows Al-Manar was once a “radical” mosque but says mosques are unlike synagogues, which are defined by denomination. “Mosques are open to anyone, they act like an umbrella, one house for all,” she says. “Years ago it had one or two imams coming here to promulgate extreme ideas, so it got a reputation, but about four years ago Nic made contact, as the local synagogue, to explain the concerns we faced. “They were remarkably understanding and aware of the dangers of extremism. It quickly became clear that this ‘radical mosque’ idea was very old and out-dated. Instead, they take a line of tolerance and promote interfaith work.” The Al-Manar-WLS relationship is now very deep, she says. “Al-Manar was the first mosque in the country to build a Sukkah outside. They work with us on the refugee dropin and homelessness shelters. Their entire leadership team came to the shul to show solidarity after Pittsburgh. Our cheder kids come here to learn about Islam, and their kids come to us to learn about Judaism. So it’s totally changed that reputation. “Yes, there are still some at WLS who remain wary, but we have long had a long history of interfaith, going back to Rabbi Hugo Gryn. It’s in the blood.” Why? “Partly it is location and geography, with this great ethnic mix.” This Grenfell kids’ camp is the perfect example of that in action. “This is what Judaism is all about,” says Sheridan. “It’s what we should be doing. It’s a mitzvah, a commandment – clothe the naked, heal the sick, feed the hungry… Nowhere in the Torah does it say ‘only for Jews’. I’m so proud of these Jewish youth leaders. If their Jewish education leads them to want to do this kind of thing, we’ve succeeded.” Editorial comment, page 14

Jungle all the way! Sophie Eastaugh goes off the beaten track in quest of Columbia’s ‘Lost’ City and learns more about the country’s indigenous tribes
T
he first drops hit my skin with sweet refreshment. Then a deluge rips through the tropical air, sluicing away the sweat and dust of the humid jungle. An image of my raincoat, naively left back at the hotel, flashes through my mind as I fashion a poncho from a black bin bag. We are trekking to the ‘Lost’ City, a challenging five-day quest on hilly pathways through the dense green forest of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta of Colombia. With the sparkling Caribbean on the horizon, these are the foothills of one of the world’s highest coastal mountains. The narrow trail turns to mud as we slip and slide around red-clay boulders, hiking poles stabbing the banks like slalom skiers. Our destination is an ancient sacred settlement, known locally as Tayuna. Built by the Tairona people around 800AD, it is centuries older than Machu Picchu but receives just a fraction of the tourist numbers. That’s changing fast. This lush triangle of mountains and forest, once named the world’s most irreplaceable nature reserve, boasts 30 rivers and 28 endemic species of bird.

Increasing numbers of travellers are getting a taste of its magic. It’s not long before the jungle heat returns. On our third day, we rise before dawn to climb to the city’s summit, a steep, Gladiator-style eliminator of 1,200 stone steps. The ascent is made for tiny feet; the Tairona averaged only 4ft 2ins tall. Panting, we arrive at the first stone circle, one of more than 100 that contained the Tairona’s homes, temples and trading activities. From the top of the site, I gaze across a network of grass terraces surrounded by a spectacular panorama of green. Two flights and three phone-free days from London, this feels like a mystical parallel world. José, our Wiwa guide, explains: “The Tairona chose this spot because it was safe, the mountains on one side and the river bank on the other.” The Wiwa are one of the four indigenous communities of the forest, along with the Kogi, the Arhuaco and the Kankuamo, all of them direct descendants of the Tairona. They see the Sierra Nevada as the “heart of the world” and themselves as the guardians of nature.
With the beauty of this jungle it’s not hard to see why but sadly for the Lost City, the site wasn’t protected enough. Spanish conquistadores arrived in the late 1500s and their attempts to impose Catholicism drove the Tairona into the mountains, leaving the site abandoned. It wasn’t rediscovered until 1972, when grave robbers stumbled on it in their hunt for buried gold. Examples of their pillaged gleaming earrings, nose rings and ornaments can be seen in Bogota’s impressive Gold Museum today. The first Jews arrived in Colombia during the same period of Spanish colonisation. Many had also been forced to convert to Catholicism and, perhaps surprisingly, sought freedom in Colombia’s northwest. In the suburbs of Medellín, a group of families have only in the past 15 years rediscovered their hidden Jewish heritage and joined other Anusim in converting to the religion taken from their ancestors. Fascinatingly, a study by the University of Antioquia in 2000 found that 14 percent of men in the state had DNA markers showing links to the Cohanim. Colombia’s Jewish population today is small, some 5,500 strong and centred mainly around Bogotá and Baranquilla. Recently, thanks to the country’s peace and relative prosperity, a number of Jews from Venezuela have escaped a crippling economy there to make Colombia their home. Back in the jungle, the indigenous communities are finding ways to preserve their unique heritage while

fighting for their future. As evidence and after a swim in an idyllic waterfall, our journey continues to a Wiwa village that last year started to welcome travellers for the first time. In a jade green valley once thick with cannabis and coca but now sugar cane, coffee and cacao, Wiwa leaders have defied the odds to establish a growing community, Gotsezhi. On arrival, we receive a traditional blessing from the village’s spiritual leader before feasting on a meal of fried fish and rice. Sitting in shaded hammocks by the stream, the Wiwa leaders explain that the new venture isn’t
only helping to support local families but also their long-term goal of buying back the whole of their ancestral lands – an ongoing process largely conducted by the Colombian government under indigenous pressure. Lorenzo Gil, known as Awimaku in the Wiwa language, founded the Sierra Nevada’s first indigenous travel company, Wiwa Tours, with his brothers. It has now teamed up with G Adventures and its not-forprofit arm, Planeterra, to bring more travellers to Gotsezhi. “The tourists who come here to discover our way of life, to swim in our waterfall, it’s a way to send a message to the world that we’re still alive, still fighting to protect our identity and culture,” says Awimaku. “By coming here you’re taking part in strengthening our community. And that makes us very happy.”

BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL Moses and Aharon warn the Egyptians of the seventh plague: locusts. The frightening prospect of a swarm scared Pharaoh’s servants into telling him that Egypt was lost. Pharaoh ignored the warning and the locusts came, devouring all the crops in the field not already destroyed by the sixth plague of fiery hailstones. Moses commands them away from Egypt and a terrible darkness descends on the Egyptian homeland, while Israelite Goshen js bathed in light. Pharaoh releases his Hebrew slaves by telling Moses to never see him again. However, Moses gives him warning of the final plague, the death of the firstborn. He tells the people about the first month of the calendar year. He also tells the Israelites that the tenth and final plague would only affect firstborns of Egyptians on condition the Israelites remembered to paint their doorposts and lintel with the blood of a lamb, ritually an Egyptian god. Before leaving Egypt, the Israelites “borrow” jewels, silver and gold. At midnight, every Egyptian firstborn dies, even Pharaoh’s own heir to the throne. Half-crazed from grief, he orders the Israelites to leave immediately. On exiting the country, the Israelites prepare for the first paschal lamb, which they ate with bitter herbs and unleavened bread. God instructs them to dedicate firstborn males to divine service and promote the ceremonies of the exodus. God also commands the redemption of firstborn donkeys and sheep. Finally, tefillin, originally an Egyptian amulet, should now be worn on the heard and arm of the Israelite worshipper.

BY RABBI GARRY WAYLAND In a very civil shul kiddush, there is but one biscuit left. Sadie does not want to take the whole last biscuit, so subtly nabs half. Morris then comes, and, with similar manners, wants to leave a morsel for someone else, so divides the remaining half into two pieces and takes one, and so on. While this scenario may not actually be feasible, it raises a paradox: can you keep breaking this biscuit into halves without it actually being depleted? If you intuitively say yes, you are not alone. Zeno, a Greek mathematician from the 5th century BC formulated this as one of his paradoxes. Ultimately, the biscuit can get eaten (and, in most shuls, probably will), because an infinite number of infinitesimally small pieces has an actual limit.

Kabbalists refer to God as Ain Sof, the One without limits. In contrast, our finite minds can only comprehend what God is not. He is not limited, not corporeal, not like anything else. As such, we are unable to relate to His true essence. Connecting to God is the task of a lifetime; we can variously relate to God as a king, father, parent, master, Lord, source, the One without limits, and so on. Infinity also affects the paradoxes in our own lives. If we look at the infinite number of pieces that come together to make the tapestries of our consciousness, our lives, our existences, we can perhaps learn a bit more about the infinite One, who is infinitely involved in our lives. ‘Don’t plant more than one type of seed in a field’
How do we respond to increased social media abuse?
BY RABBI ELANA DELLAL “You shall not sow your vineyard with a second kind of seed, else the crop – from the seed you have sown – and the yield of the vineyard may not be used” (Deuteronomy 22:9). As Moses is offering guidance to the Israelites on how to create a social, judicial, agricultural and ritual structure, we are given this law forbidding planting two types of seeds in one field. It is one of many in our Torah forbidding interference with the established order of nature, particularly with the mixing of two kinds of substances. This law is from a pre-Darwinian time when it was believed the creation of plants and animals ended on the sixth day of creation. Today, we must re-examine it in partnership with our understanding of evolution and our ever-expanding knowledge of science. We now know that companion planting can increase agricultural productivity while reducing the use of environmental resources. For example,

planting corn and pole beans together is mutually beneficial – the corn stalk provides a pole for the beans to grow on and the pole beans add nitrogen to the soil, aiding the growth of the corn. The original intent of this law was to honour God’s role in creation, stemming from the belief that mixing two types of seeds interferes with the handiwork of God. We can best honour creation today by using our knowledge of agriculture to act as God’s partner in this world… by planting our harvest in a way that yields the greatest results, while being environmentally and socially conscious and by considering how our agricultural decisions can best create a sustainable food source for those in need. By making ethical agricultural decisions that honour the sanctity of the natural and human world, we can still honour the intent of this prohibition. When Holocaust Educational Trust chief executive Karen Pollock last week called out the horrifying extent of antisemitism and Holocaust denial on social media, it was a vital intervention, but perhaps not surprising. Even the most occasional social media user will have witnessed hate speech directed towards Jews and other minority groups - and women. It is worth remembering the punishment the Torah describes for those who committed the sin of lashon ha’ra – negative speech. They would be afflicted with a skin condition known as tzara’at and forced to leave the community for seven days, isolating them physically as a reflection of how their speech sought to isolate others. This punishment was only if the speech in question was true, but used in a negative way. If such a harsh punishment was given in this case, we must think how seriously our tradition would
view the true hate speech, abuse and smears that characterise many social media interactions. It has become popular to cite free speech as a justification for not controlling what people can share online but free does not mean consequence-free. From stories in our Torah to lessons from Jewish history, we see that words may be freely spoken, but they will always carry important consequences. The Holocaust Educational Trust, which my late father founded, exists to remind us of this. Just as those guilty of lashon ha’ra were
forced out of the camp, so too must social media platforms ensure that people who abuse and hate online face consequences and have time away to reflect on the damage they are doing. Tzedek, tzedek tirdof – we must pursue justice and ensure it is seen to be done fairly. We must not look only at the behaviour of others, though. Our community has questions to ask about how we behave toward each other. As regular victims of abuse and violent language, we should know better than to resort to them to communicate with each other. Whether the conversation is about differences in religious outlook or viewpoints on Israel, there are places on social media where Jews abuse other Jews.
