600 contact watchdog over Labour hate Party’s Jewish affiliate launched monitoring centre two weeks ago A new monitoring centre set up to keep track of antisemitism in the Labour Party has received more than 600 reports in its first two weeks, writes Adam Decker. The initiative, launched by the Jewish Labour Movement (JLM), to help better report incidences of hate, calls on members and those who have left the party to share their experiences of anti-Jewish racism, to build a more accurate picture of the nature and extent of the issue. Those wishing to make submissions can do so until 26 October through an online form at jlm.org.uk/asmonitoring. Ella Rose, JLM’s national director, told Jewish News: “Throughout the past three years, the JLM has engaged with the Labour Party to try to solve the severe and ongoing crisis of Labour antisemitism. Board motion ‘absurd’ The Board of Deputies’ president has branded as “absurd” a Manchesterbased lawyer’s motion calling for the organisation to “terminate all contact” with the Labour Party leadership, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. Robert Festenstein, who resigned his Labour membership when a disciplinary panel did not expel former mayor Ken Livingstone, served his notice of motion this week, just as the party begins consulting on its code of conduct on antisemitism. The motion calls for the Board to cease all contact with Jeremy Corbyn or his office until the Labour leader “publicly acknowledges his own personal failings” in relation to antisemitism and “offers an unreserved apology to British Jews and to the Israeli victims of terrorists with whom he has shown solidarity”. Board president Marie van der Zyl was unimpressed, however, saying the motion would tie the Board’s hands at a crucial time. “While we agree with many of the concerns expressed in the motion, such severe constraints on the Board’s ability to act or chal-

lenge problems directly with the leadership of Labour or any party would be totally counterproductive,” she said. “We need to be nimble to stand up for the community, not retreat behind red tape. I am certain deputies will reject this absurd motion.” At a meeting of Labour’s National Executive Committee in September, Corbyn suggested a caveat to the party’s adoption of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) definition of antisemitism and its working examples. Corbyn’s proposed addition said: “It should not be considered antisemitic to describe Israel, its policies or the circumstances around its foundation as racist because of their discriminatory impact, or to support another settlement of the Israel-Palestine conflict.” The addition was rejected by Labour’s ruling body. In addition to Festenstein’s pre-condition that Corbyn first apologise to British Jews and Israelis, he said the Labour leader should also apologise “for the offence caused by his proposed statement on 2 September,

the intent of which was to qualify the IHRA definition”. Festenstein is a director of Jewish Human Rights Watch, a vice-chair of the Zionist Central Council in Manchester and the deputy for Prestwich Hebrew Congregation. He unsuccessfully sought election as a Board vice-president in May. In his campaign manifesto

this year, Festenstein said: “It is the regressive left’s attack on our community that is of principal concern today. “Universities, charities and trade unions have all lined up alongside the current Labour Party leadership to belittle our community and define for us what is and isn’t antisemitism.”

There were angry scenes as pro-Palestinian protesters confronted the UK’s Israel Ambassador at Queen’s University in Belfast on Tuesday. A protester was restrained as several attempted to follow Mark Regev’s car as he left the institution following his visit . Around 70 pro-Palestinian protesters gathered outside Queen’s as Regev gave a talk to Masters students who study subjects related to politics and conflict resolution as part of a workshop. Queen’s defended the invitation to Regev saying it permits freedom of thought and expression. The spokeswoman added that Queen’s has also invited the Palestinian Ambassador to the UK to visit the university and engage with students in a similar format. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) maintained a presence as protesters waved Palestinian flags and took part in chants that included “Free Palestine” and “Regev out” outside the building. Queen’s Student Union Student Activities officer Robert Murtagh and People Before Profit Belfast councillor Matt Collins were

Murtagh said the students’ union backed the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement, which calls for an international boycott of Israel over the way it treats Palestinians. A spokesperson for the Union of Jewish Students said: “Rather than negative destructive boycotts, we implore those who protested to better understand the realities of the conflict for the people on both sides by engaging in constructive dialogue.”

TEFILLIN ‘PREVENTS HEART ATTACKS’ Jewish men who wrap leather straps around their arm as part of their daily morning prayers may also be protecting themselves from the worst effects of heart attacks, a study has found. Researchers at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine found that regular users of tefillin, or phylacteries, may receive cardiovascular health benefits though remote ischemic preconditioning – that is, briefly restricting blood flow and oxygen to the heart and then restoring it. The study involved 20 Jewish men.

LLOYD GEORGE LINK TO SHUL LECTURE Hampstead Synagogue has announced that this year’s Isaiah Berlin Lecture will be given by Margaret MacMillan, the great-granddaughter of former Prime Minister David Lloyd-George MacMillan. The eminent historian and expert in international relations, who has just delivered this year’s BBC Reith Lectures, will reflect on the lessons of the Great War at the shul’s community centre on 8 November. Berlin was a British philosopher, born to Jewish parents, whose ideas on liberty and pluralism have had a lasting influence.

Muslim anti-hate event targeted A London event involving Muslims Against Antisemitism (MAAS) planned for Thursday has been targeted by activists linked to a controversial Islamic group, writes Joe Millis. A leading Muslim campaigner against antisemitism, MAAS chairman Ghanem Nuseibeh, pulled out of the meeting following a Twitter-led campaign of opposition to his presence. However, the meeting, under the auspices of the local council, whose leader, Councillor Jas Athwal, was due to speak, was still set to go ahead despite the opposition of those linked to controversial group Muslim Engagement and Development (MEND). Nuseibeh is the descendant of a prominent Palestinian family, whose ancestors have held the keys to Jerusalem’s Holy Sepulchre Church for generations owing to intra-Christian infighting. The family is largely trusted by both the Palestinians and the Israelis and Nuseibeh has been

tweet, tagging Wes Streeting MP and Athwal, dated 14 October, 9.36pm, Ahmed wrote: “Why, at time [sic] when appg [All-Party Parliamentary Group] is ready to launch definition of Islamophobia, has someone (Nusiebeh) with ties to islamophobes... been invited to our constituency by Redbridge council?? Please tell him he is not welcome here.” Ahmed followed up with a tweet on 15 October at 7.29pm: “Good news! Nuseibeh has been removed from the panellists [thumbs up emoji] however still doesn’t take away the issue with the overall framing of the event in one of the most diverse boroughs in the country. Is this meant to help community cohesion? Zero engagement with the Muslim community.” Fiyaz Mughal, founder and director of Faith Matters and Tell MAMA – Muslim groups with close ties to the Jewish community – told Jewish News: “Why can’t we talk about antisemitism in small sections of Muslim communities?”

Jewish man ‘attacked with lighter’ at debate Jenny Manson’s event with Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell was marked by a vitriolic demonstration outside the venue, during which an unsuccessful attempt was made to set fire to an Israeli flag worn by one of the protesters, writes Jenni Frazer. Manson, chairman of Jewish Voice for Labour, told Jewish News the decision to ban people from the event – held to back her bid to be Labour’s candidate for the Finchley and Golders Green constituency – was not hers. She said: “Some were refused admission for administrative reasons, some for security reasons. But these decisions were taken by my campaign team, not me.” Around 15 people, some of whom had been ticket-holders and were subsequently told their tickets were cancelled, demonstrated outside the Cricklewood hotel where the event took place. Among them was Damon Lenszner, 58, one of the participants in the BBC programme earlier in the year that took British Jews to Israel. He had been outside the Cricklewood venue, wearing an Israeli flag round his shoulders when a man wearing a camouflage jacket stepped forward, took out a lighter and attempted to set fire to it. “The flag was a bit charred, but it didn’t catch fire,” said Lenszner. “I tried to chase

Woman ‘assaulted’ during Israel demo A woman was allegedly assaulted after protesting outside a London event discussing Jeremy Corbyn, Palestine and antisemitism on Tuesday night. The injured woman was named by a fellow pro-Israel protester as Sharon Klaff (pictured). Police confirmed that officers were called to an incident outside the Old Fire Station in Holloway, near the Seven Sisters Road, but that no arrests were made. A Metropolitan Police spokeswoman said police were advised that one woman sustained “minor injuries” and said: “Enquiries continue and officers from the Central North Command Unit are investigating.” Ambrosine Shitrit, a proIsrael activist who posted video footage, said she was attacked alongside Klaff, who was reportedly taken to

Whittington Hospital with a head injury. Shitrit filmed herself being escorted out of the meeting after initially denying she was filming it. She later used a megaphone from outside, at which point she and Klaff are believed to have been attacked. The event featured speakers from the Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Stop the War Coalition and Jewish Voice for Labour, which supports Corbyn.

‘Mass drop-off’ to help London rough sleepers Jewish friends and siblings who set up a social enterprise last year have completed a “mass drop-off” of clothing and kit to rough sleepers in London on World Homelessness Day. Volunteers for Linkey – co-founded by brother and sister team Natasha Langleben and Josh Adley – delivered items such as jackets, sleeping bags and toiletries to rough sleepers and shelters around the capital last Wednesday evening as part of the worldwide drive. A team of 28 travelled around the city in seven cars, distributing items paid for by supporters, and met more than 60 of London’s homeless people. “We heard comments like ‘Christmas has come early’. They were just so grateful for the items they received,” said Langleben. “We met people who instantly put their jackets on. One man, called Dennis, was eager to pose for a photo in his new gear. We also met Grace, just out of hospital with pneumonia, who has been on the streets for 18 months. Then there was Andrew in Shoreditch, who couldn’t stop thanking us.” The initiative was set up last year after

Blair warns: Corbyn has freed Labour’s demons Tony Blair has suggested Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership of the Labour Party has let the antisemitism genie out of the bottle, describing how a failure to tackle its new guises “brings out the demons” of the far left, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. In a speech at the annual dinner of the Holocaust Educational Trust (HET) on Monday night, the former prime minister also claimed today’s Labour leadership was still “in denial” about the problem, despite some positive recent moves. Blair, who paid tribute to new and innovative ways in which educators were preserving the memory of Holocaust survivors, said he was pleased that Yvette Cooper MP and her husband Ed Balls – who is co-chair of the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation – were in the audience. In a barbed remark, he said: “I want you to know… that for those of us who know what the Labour Party should truly be about, there is nothing more abhorrent than the notion that

antisemitism in Labour today.” Blair has defended Corbyn in recent months, saying he does not believe the current Labour leader to be an antisemite, but criticised his perceived reluctance to address antisemitism when it relates to Israel. “It is not enough to challenge antisemitism in general. You have to challenge it in particular, because it has taken a new form today in the attempt to delegitimise and demonise Israel,” he said. “What we always learn is that whatever new form antisemitism takes, it drags along behind it the horrible creatures of the past.” Blair took aim at Corbyn’s past comment about British Jews not understanding British irony, which he said was “as ignorant as it was unpleasant”, and described how he was shocked to see antisemitism alive and well again in the party. “As that resurgence of antisemitism happens in a new guise, it does come back, and in a way that brings out the demons of the far right and the far

MPs ‘teaching tolerance’ Parliamentarians have debated how best to “teach tolerance” at a Westminster event celebrating the launch of a book co-authored by a Jewish woman and her Hindu friend, based on the teachings of a Hindu text. The event on Monday, which took place as part of Hate Crime Awareness Week, was chaired by Lord Popat of Harrow, who initiated a House of Lords debate on antisemitism last month, and featured MP Luciana Berger as well as Lord Parekh, Lord Hameed and Justin Cohen, news editor at Jewish News. The meeting celebrated the recent publication of children’s book Gita: The Battle of

the Worlds, co-written by Sonal Sachdev Patel and Jemma Wayne-Kattan, which took inspiration from the classic Hindu text. The Gita, a 700-verse scripture that inspired the Indian independence movement, is an allegory for ethical struggles and urges selfless action. Its lessons were discussed by panellists, who considered what ideas would unite the next generation. Among other things, panellists debated how the UK’s education system protected customs and individuality “while at the same time reinforcing common bonds of citizenship and humanity,” and “where hate speech starts and free speech ends”.

SHOAH HOLOGRAM PROJECT IS LAUNCHED IN PARLIAMENT The National Holocaust Centre and Museum has launched its acclaimed Forever Project in the House of Commons, which uses 3D technology to enable people to hear and see survivors. The project preserves the voice of Holocaust survivors for generations. To create the database of responses, the centre filmed 10 survivors, each answering more than 1,000 questions posed by academics and the general public. MPs and guests at the event, hosted by Lord Pickles, had the chance to interact with survivors through the 3D digital technology. Steven Frank, one survivor who was filmed, said: “What’s going to happen when we are all dead? We’ve heard people say, ‘We’ll get their children to tell their stories.’ But it isn’t the same. It has to come from the heart of the person

Orthodox rabbis back JEWISH SCHOOL DOWNGRADED Chief’s LGBT+ guide Some of the UK’s most senior Orthodox rabbis have backed the principles behind Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis’s landmark guidance to schools on anti-LGBT+ bullying – while warning some have interpreted his intervention as a relaxing of the Torah position on homosexuality. In a major step forward for LGBT+ Jews in the UK, the six Charedi leaders – who between them represent the vast majority of strictly Orthodox Jews in the UK – stood firm behind Mirvis’s insistence that Jewish LGBT+ students and children should face no intolerance or ill will towards them for reasons of their sexuality or gender affiliation. “We affirm that no child should suffer bullying, regardless of his or her inclinations,” they said, adding that it is “appropriate and correct for schools to ensure that among their staff are qualified individuals who are able to counsel pupils should the need arise”. However, the rabbis – among the biggest names in Orthodox Jewry – warned Jews not to be fooled by any “misconceptions” over non-heterosexual “inclinations”. Mirvis had earlier said “our chil-

Another Orthodox school in London has been downgraded by Ofsted to “inadequate”, with inspectors criticising it in part because pupils do not learn about prejudice-based bullying. The damning report issued against Beis Madrash Elyon was published as Charedi leaders met in Stamford Hill to discuss their response to the Chief Rabbi’s guidance urging Jewish schools to tackle the bullying. The independent boys’ school in West Hendon, which has 70 pupils aged 11 and 15, charges £6,000 a

year in fees. However, only onethird of pupils achieve six GCSEs. In his report, the Ofsted inspector said the school’s leaders “insisted” he make no mention of protected characteristics such as sexual orientation to pupils during his visit, despite the school being required to teach these under the Equalities Act 2010. He said the school’s leaders knew this meant independent school standards were not being met. Pupils’ lack of learning about anti-prejudice bullying was cited as one of six “key” reasons why the

school was judged “inadequate” – a downgrade from its last inspection, which deemed it to “require improvement”. While praising pupils’ behaviour and commitment to a Jewish ethos and their high grades in certain subjects, the inspector said their curriculum was “inadequate”. He added that “not enough attention is paid to pupils’ personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education. Their creative, technical, musical and physical learning is weak…”.

had a profound effect on staff members and supporters who volunteered to attend. Hidden gem of Jewish world comes to London Jenni Frazer meets the man in charge of a unique archive of ‘just about everything to do with the Jews of Eastern Europe’

J

onathan Brent, executive director of YIVO, reckons he has the best job in the world. And, after a short time with this genial academic, it’s hard not to agree. YIVO – Yiddisher Visnshaftlekher Institut, or Yiddish

Scientific Institute, now more formally known as the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research – was founded in Vilna, Lithuania, in 1925. It has been based in New York since 1940 and is a repository of just about everything to do with the Jews of Eastern Europe. That means more than

23 million items, from letters to unsmoked cigarettes meant for Cossacks to boxes of tailors’ buttons. Here are the papers of Chagall, of Sholem Aleichem, even Theodor Herzl’s diary, and the painstaking barmitzvah project of the future father of the Rothschild banking dynasty, Mayer Amschel Roth-

schild. It is the hidden gem of the Jewish world, the largest single resource of its kind – and it is about to open a London office in Cheapside. “University College London and the Lithuanian Embassy invited us to London in 2015 for a celebration of YIVO’s 90th anniversary,” Brent said. “In the 1930s, for a time, we had a presence in London and today in New York we have about 40ft of British Jewish material [from the time] that most people don’t know about.” This includes a letter written in Yiddish by Chaim

Weizmann from his Manchester address in 1905, and an 1889 balance sheet of the East London Tailors Strike – which Lord Rothschild supported financially. During the 2015 visit, Brent met Alan Howard, one of Britain’s most successful investors but, also, crucially, said to be one of the most “connected” networkers in the Jewish community. After giving a lunch in YIVO’s honour, Howard suggested the organisation should consider opening a London office. “Our ambition is to be a global institution, so the idea appealed”, says Brent, and YIVO has spent the past three years building the infrastructure, including getting Charity Commission approval and setting up a London board. The plans include partnerships with JW3, the Pears Foundation, the Wiener Library and University College London. At the same time, YIVO has been involved in possibly its most ambitious project: digitising and translating into English its extraordinary archive to put the material online. “Each year, 6,000 people use the YIVO New York archives but 250,000 more search online,” says Brent.

YIVO has now raised $3 million (£2.3m) for the first stage of the digitising process. Brent, an academic by training, has been in post for nine years and says YIVO’s overall aim “is to change the Jewish narrative. The online resources will be for the Jewish people, not just academics”. He believes access to the archives will give people a new view of the now lost world of Eastern European Jewry, a living, breathing, colourful tapestry of communities that led vibrant lives before the Holocaust. There are other, chilling, things to be found, including a portrait of a Nazi leader in the Hitler Youth in Holland responsible for rounding up Jews. Brent expains: “He sits there, very sedately, not in his uniform but looking like an ordinary businessman, sitting for his portrait. It looks absolutely unremarkable, then you turn it over and see the back is from a Torah scroll.” Brent says the YIVO archives show a picture of Jewish society that was “vibrant and powerful and existed on so many different levels”. It is opening a unique window on yesterday’s Jews for those of today.

‘Indomitable’ former JFS head is mourned The current headteacher of JFS has led the heartfelt tributes to one of her predecessors Jo Wagerman, who passed away on Tuesday, aged 85, writes Jack Mendel. Wagerman, who was later awarded an OBE, was an accomplished educator and headteacher of JFS between 1985 and 1993, when it was based in Camden Town. She was the first female president of the Board of Deputies, serving from 2000 to 2003, having also been senior vice-president. JFS headteacher Rachel Fink paid tribute, saying she had “transformed the school and developed its reputation as an outstanding learning institution”. She added: “Anyone who knew her will recall her as a formidable personality who was deeply respected and admired.” “I had a very close relationship with her having been the first head girl appointed under her headship. In more recent years, she became a friend and adviser. The school has lost a close friend and former leader and I have lost one of my role models.” Board of Deputies president, Marie van der Zyl, who is the second woman to lead the organisation following Wagerman, paid her respects, saying: “Jo Wagerman was a pioneer. She made an immense contribution to our Jewish community and she will be sadly missed.” Henry Grunwald, who succeeded Wagerman as Board president, said she was “a truly great woman” and added: “I served alongside her as her senior vice-president and saw her great commitment to her position. “I had, and have, nothing but admiration for her. It was not an easy time for her because she became ill during her presidency, but her strong will and truly indomitable spirit saw her through. I and many others will miss her deeply.” Simon Johnson, chief executive of the Jewish Leadership Council said: “Her dedication to our community is an inspiration and she will be sorely missed. Our

thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends at this time.” Paul Edlin, a Board vice president from 2006 to 2012, and current chair of a regional council, said she was a “listening president who worked tirelessly for the community, but really had her work cut out”. As well as being “very strong on Israel, an ardent religious Zionist”, he said she “expanded the Board’s education department, after retiring from teaching, and oversaw the implementing of a reorganisation of the body”.

‘A BELOVED ROLE MODEL & TEACHER’ BY RACHEL FINK JFS HEAD TEACHER

There are certain historic occasions so immense that if you ask people what they were doing at the time, even decades later, they can share that memory with you as if it were yesterday. Such an occasion was the day “Mrs Wagerman” was appointed as headteacher of JFS. The announcement was made over the school tannoy system and, as a year 11 student, I recall the cheers from staff and students that echoed around the corridors of Camden. As deputy headteacher, she was renowned for walking the school in her gown, reflecting the formidable personality that she was. That she would succeed her predecessor was not, however, a foregone conclusion. This was nothing to do with her skills and talents, but it was the 1980s and Mrs Wagerman was a woman seeking to undertake a prominent leadership role in the community. Under her leadership,

though, JFS was transformed. She laid the foundation for the way in which the school flourishes today. Her success, I believe, was the balance she created between demanding high standards and providing care for both her students and staff. As a year 12 student, having been sent to her office, despite being reasonably certain it was to appoint me as head girl, I was still somewhat nervous. The warmth and generosity she showed me that day was the start of a relationship I have cherished ever since. There was a certain assumption that as she lived and breathed JFS, she didn’t live an ordinary life. But my favourite memory of Jo was seeing her doing the ironing when I popped in to her daughter’s home in Israel. As a teacher just starting out on my own educational career, this unexpected scene taught me a huge lesson about the capability that ordinary human beings have to achieve extraordinary things. Of all the good wishes I received on my appointment to JFS, the one I will cherish most was the phone conversation I had with Jo. This week I lost a role model and the Jewish community has lost a beloved educator and leader.

Jews of World War 100 years after the Armistice, we honour notable community members who fought in the Great War

1 Ronald Lucas Quixano HenrWhen the First World War began, many Jews were already serving as professional soldiers and sailors in the British army and the Royal Navy. Some of these were among the first be deployed with the British Expeditionary Force in August 1914. They were among the first casualties. Ronald Lucas Quixano Henriques was born on 9 June 1884 in London. After finishing school he went to Sandhurst, taking a commission in the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment. He served in Gibraltar and was stationed in South Africa in 1914. He was home on leave when the war was declared and he was ordered to France with

the 1st battalion of his regiment rather than return to South Africa. Henriques was a Lieutenant when he arrived in France on the 12 August 1914. As a young officer his role was to lead his men during the fighting which was what he was doing at the First Battle of the Aisne, part of the Battle of Mons. The Battle of Mons was brutal and led to a British retreat and high casualties. While Henriques was encouraging his men to advance onto a German position he was shot in the forehead and killed instantly on 14 September 1914. He is buried at Vendresse Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery in France.

‘I’ll bridge the diaspora divide’

Isaac Herzog on his new role and father’s legacy New Jewish Agency chair Isaac Herzog says he “shares the frustration” of Jews around the world over recent Israeli laws and feels the “agony and separation” between Israel and the diaspora, writes Stephen Oryszczuk. Herzog’s frank comments came as he flew into London to mark the 100-year anniversary of the birth of his father, former Israeli president Chaim Herzog. Isaac, who until this summer led Israel’s parliamentary opposition, spoke to Jewish News about his father’s legacy and the state of Israeldiaspora relations today, acknowledging the problems new laws had caused. “I fought against many of these new laws and I share the frustration of many of your readers,” he said. “But I also give credit to the Israeli democratic system.” He said the most controversial – the ‘Nation State Law’ – “came out of a 15-year debate about the influence of the Supreme Court and how the court should decide upon constitutional matters, but it’s not reported outside Israel so it came as a shock to the diaspora”. He added that analysis of the law’s impact had been found wanting. His message to disillusioned diaspora Jews, he said, was to consider the logistics of Israeli politics and “understand the undercurrents of Israeli society, which are surprisingly interesting”, adding: “I have optimism for a more inclusive [Israeli] society, and believe we can have a new formula for the [Israel-diaspora] relationship, but it will be difficult.” Speaking about his new role, he said: “It is my job to find the common denominator between Israel and the diaspora, to lower the agony and separation, and have an open and frank discussion.” Herzog’s comments came ahead of a special ceremony with Lord Rothschild, the Israeli ambassador, Isaac and his brother Michael, a brigadier-general in the Israel Defence Forces, to mark their father’s birth in Belfast

100 years ago. In reflections that bode well for his tenure, he said he knows how Israeli actions can affect communities around the world. “I understand it [the vandalism] is a reaction to what Israel’s done, it absolutely impacts on the Jewish world and beyond,” he said. “That needs to be taken into account and it is, in the Security Cabinet, over the most difficult decisions, over war and peace.” He acknowledged Israeli “mistakes”, but said he was reassured Israel had one of the strongest legal systems in the world. One of four children, Isaac said his Dublinraised father instilled in him a love of Israel and the Jewish people, but acknowledged his father’s complicated relationship with Britain “shows the dilemma in every human being”. Although Chaim fought for the Haganah, a Jewish paramilitary unit battling the British in Palestine, he also fought for the British Army against the Nazis, “a formative experience for his personality and world view,” Isaac explains. “War changes everything. He saw it as a duty. His father [Ireland’s Chief Rabbi Yitzhak HaLevi Herzog] spoke with him and said he was very proud.” Isaac recalled when Chaim knew his Army service was over, in 1946. “He walked into the officers’ mess and nobody would talk to him, incredible hostile looks. Irgun had just blown up the King David. Suddenly he knew he was an outcast and had to return home. There was sadness, but also an awakening.” Chaim was knighted by the Queen in 1970, but it wasn’t a moment of public pride, Isaac said. “At that time, Britain was still a very complicated story in Israeli public life. He didn’t make a fuss about it because in Israel there were many who came out of the British Mandate with wounds.” Difficulties with Britain were as nothing compared to post-war Israeli-German relations, yet Chaim broke ground in 1987 to

become the first Israeli head of state to visit Germany, 40 years after he had identified a captured German soldier as Holocaust mastermind Heinrich Himmler. “He explained to protesting Holocaust survivors how it was the ultimate victory, the flag of Israel flying as German soldiers saluted an Israeli president,” says Isaac. “But he still always refused to drive a German car.”

Next month, one lucky fan of the late actress will be able to acquire a Jewish prayer book, or siddur, that she owned. The operation itself was said to be a first, inasmuch as a heart transplant had never been carried out on a baby so young before — and the first time that a Palestinian baby had received a heart transplant from a Jewish child. Anniversary honour for the tiny boat that saved Danish Jews Elisabeth K571 is not a name that fires the imagination, but for Denmark and its tiny Jewish community it is a symbol of resistance and safety. The 30-foot cutter, now owned by a museum and recently restored, is the last surviving vessel to have ferried Jews to the safety of Sweden in October 1943. This month it was guest of honour at a 75-year anniversary event. It took take place in the port of Køge, 30 miles south of Copenhagen, with 100 guests witnessing the unveiling of a nine-foot granite sculpture honouring the little-told rescue of 7,000 Danish Jews. It is a story Danes are rightly proud to tell, of a nation’s reaction when – in October 1943, under Nazi occupation – Danish Jews started being rounded up. Panicked Jewish families that had not yet managed to escape saw safety in neutral Sweden, a few miles away across the Øresund sound. But the coast, like the towns and cities, was patrolled by the Gestapo.

In the days and weeks that followed, Jews from Danish cities were transported secretly by the Resistance to places like Køge, sometimes in mock funeral corteges, sometimes in ambulances under assumed names. From Køge, the persecuted were helped to the coast. “From the town square Jews were transported in trolleys, lorries, buses and taxis to a little place near the coast south of Køge, where they were hidden in a farm,” recalls Bruno Juul, a project manager at the town’s Home Guard Association, which has organised the ceremony. “Then, in the darkness, they rowed out to two waiting fishing boats. On 8 October 1943, up to 500 fugitive Jews sailed to freedom, landing at the small harbour of Klagshamn in Sweden.” Juul said the Køge operation was Denmark’s largest, but similar efforts were made all along the coast. Jews were spirited out to Sweden by whatever means available, including rowing boats, sailing boats and

fishing boats, hidden under deck, always at night, always under the noses of German patrols. In nearby Dragør, up to 700 Jews were ferried in boats including Elisabeth K571, skippered by fisherman Einar Larsen. He alone saved 70 Jews before being interrogated by the Gestapo in 1944. He soon fled himself, living the rest of his life across the waters with those he saved. He was lucky ones. Some nonJewish Danes lost their lives for their bravery, including Snekkersten inn-

Juul says Danes’ wartime deeds have “so far been overlooked and not described in the history books”, but in the village of Gilleleje, where up to 900 Jews left and many local fishermen were interned, stands a 20-foot statue, a gift from Israeli billionaire and shipping tycoon Yuli Ofer in recognition of residents’ help.

The Home Guard Association in Køge added another symbol of defiance, a reminder of the heroism of Danes, in the two-hour ceremony attended by Danish ministers and the Israeli and Swedish ambassadors. Also among those present was 88-year-old Rudolf Bier, father of the Danish film producer Susanne Bier, who was one of those rescued.

Musa’s Jewish heart lives on When the Jewish News called Sheba Hospital to find out about the condition of the Palestinian baby, Musa, given a heart transplant in Israel last week, there was, for once, no need to explain on whose behalf we were inquiring. Musa’s story, and the inspiring work undertaken by Sheba Hospital’s surgical and medical team, had captured the imagination and gone global. More than 22,500 people saw the story on social media and posted and reposted it. For this was not just a heart transplant. It was, as the doctors noted, a “hope transplant” — it was a heart donated by a Jewish Israeli family in the devout wish that another child could benefit. Their own child had died of a chronic condition last week. Amid all the hatred which has come to define the Middle East, it is unsurprising that Musa and the work done by the Jewish and Arab doctors and nurses should have struck such a powerful chord with readers worldwide. Though, as we report this week, little Musa tragically died in the early hours of Tuesday morning, the hospital will continue to perform radical and dramatic surgery on young children who need help, from whatever community. Dangerous thought-policing I take exception to Student Rabbi Gabriel Webber’s words, (‘No place for such letters’, 4 October) and his accusation I “openly incited discrimination against Muslims ... [by] seeking a pretext to ban burkas while making sure Jewish religious clothing is unrestricted”. If he had understood what I had written (‘The burka’s place in Britain’, 27 September), he could not have made such a mischievous suggestion. I had merely pointed out “a ban could be imposed on balaclavas and similar identitymasking facial covering on grounds of security, especially since they are used by bank robbers and others to carry out

criminal activities”. That might include the burka, which was “used by one of the male terrorists involved in the London bombings on 7 July 2005 to evade arrest and flee the country”, but it was NOT a religious matter whatsoever. In fact, I stressed “that any clothing that does not compromise security, such as the [Muslim] hijab ...” should be

Problem with bigotry Student rabbi Gabriel Webber (Letters, 4 October) should have revised better and comprehended that it was indeed the burka wearer who was doing the bullying. I intervened only to defend the young Asian shop assistant. How dare Gabriel be so pompous to accuse Jewish News of being irresponsible when through theological study he would have categorically established that the burka is not a religious requirement? It is merely a visual sign that discriminates between the sexes and is not part of Western culture. It seems it is student rabbi Web-

Death, bans and boycotts: No wonder I’m depressed JENNI FRAZER

I

’m not, as a rule, a great quoter of Jewish sages, but couldn’t help offering this from Hillel, as the most apposite comment on a couple of weeks of turbulent events. Hillel said: “That which is despicable to you, do not do to your fellow, this is the whole Torah, and the rest is commentary.” So, with apologies to Hillel, here’s the commentary. We’ve had two parallel situations in the past few weeks and I am profoundly depressed by people’s responses. First came the awful killings of two Jewish Israelis in the Barkan factory on the West Bank. The victims were 35 and 29, young, married, parents. The Palestinian man who murdered them is believed to have worked alongside them. The deaths were… what? Unspeakable, two more terrible statistics in the cycle of seemingly interminable violence. And then came the death of a Palestinian woman, said to have died as Jewish settlers –

Jewish settlers – stoned her family’s car. She and her husband were travelling with their nine-year-old daughter. Is one death not as terrible as others? I’ve driven those West Bank roads. Believe me, there is no excuse, not for the Palestinian terrorists and not for those who threw rocks. Let’s move on to the second parallel, stories of banners and boycotters. Jenny Manson, whose stated ambition is to become Labour’s MP for Finchley and Golders Green, held a dialogue event with Shadow Chancellor John McDonnell last week. As is well known by now, Manson’s campaign team gravely miscalculated public response by attempting to ban people from the event – including journalists, and including this journalist. I can’t say I took kindly to the initiative and in the end I was reinstated, although others deemed by organisers to have the potential to be disruptive were still denied entry. One colleague who was not attending as a journalist but as a resident of the area and thus a potential voter, was manhandled and ejected

All around were members of Jewish Voice for Labour, which Manson chairs, watching. So we are agreed, I imagine, banning people is a bad thing. How about the more egregious case of 22-year-old American student Lara Alqasem, who was detained at Ben- Gurion Airport for more than a week while court battles raged as to whether she could be allowed into Israel? Alqasem, who has Palestinian grandparents, had secured a place to study at the Hebrew University, but was denied entry because of her previous association with the boycott movement. Her lawyer, Yotam Ben-Hillel, asked:

“How can she be a BDS [boycott, divestment and sanctions] supporter if she wants to attend Hebrew University?” And the university itself sent a lawyer to argue for Alqasem. What message would it send, she asked the court, if Israel wanted to declare that it was “a democracy and not an apartheid state”? Surely Israel is strong and confident enough to allow a 22-year-old student into its university. And surely Jenny Manson, who thinks she can represent all Finchley and Golders Green constituents, doesn’t need to be frightened of letting in a few people who disagree with her? She may find many more in that category if she wants to be a politician. The rest, as Hillel said, is commentary.

Charities must not be sucked into hate BROOKE GOLDSTEIN & JONATHAN TURNER

C

harities that promote extremism, violence and hatred have been in the spotlight. Earlier this month, The Times revealed that a radical Islamist group, the Muslim Research and Development Foundation (MRDF), had been using its frankly unfathomable status as a registered charity to raise funds through Amazon Smile, the scheme that enables Amazon customers to donate 0.5 percent of the cost of their purchase to a selected charity. Yet in this instance, the head of the charity in question promotes female genital mutilation, child marriage and the stoning to death of adulterers. He has been described by the Quilliam Foundation as “one of the most dangerous men in Britain.”

It is a particularly shocking but far from isolated example of how charitable status insulates organisations from being held accountable for promoting extreme views. But it is a pattern that also applies to organisations that have demonised Israel and played a role in the mainstreaming of the antisemitic anti-Zionism so evident in Labour’s antisemitism crisis. That’s why our organisations, The Lawfare Project and UK Lawyers for Israel (UKLFI) have in recent weeks submitted complaints to the Charity Commission regarding two such charities, Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) and War on Want (WoW). Both charities, we allege, promote false and frequently antisemitic narratives on Israel, misuse charitable funds to spread political propaganda and have links to a terrorist organisation, namely the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP). MAP and WoW both work closely with Palestinian non-governmental organisations affiliated to or connected with the PFLP, such as Addameer, whose vice-chair is described on the PFLP website as its

leader, and who was indicted in 2015 for calling for the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers, and such as Al-Haq, whose general director has convictions for arranging PFLP training and is prohibited from travelling abroad owing to his involvement in terrorism. MAP’s founder and honorary patron, Dr Swee Ang, has distributed an openly antisemitic video by former Ku Klux Klan Grand Wizard, David Duke, entitled CNN, Goldman Sachs and the Zio Matrix. It has promoted Seven Jewish Children, a play condemned by the Community Security Trust and described by Howard Jacobson as “wantonly inflammatory”. Meanwhile, War on Want, as its name suggests, ostensibly addresses global poverty but spends a disproportionate amount of its time and resources promoting hatred of Israel, through its backing of campaigns such as Israeli Apartheid Week on UK campuses. Both groups peddle disinformation regarding Israel in their promotional materials in what we call “dog-whistle fundraising”. The issue of left-wing antisemitism that dominated British news this summer

didn’t come out of nowhere. There is an infrastructure of hatred against Israel that has fed and nurtured it and groups such as WoW and MAP have used their halo as charities to give it an acceptable face. It is unacceptable for charities to misuse funds to cosy up to groups with terrorist links, spread hatred and mislead the public and it brings the charity sector into disrepute. The new chair of the Charity Commission, Baroness Stowell, faces the unenviable task of restoring public confidence in the sector. She has acknowledged the extent of the challenge, commenting recently that charities “must now steer a new course, if we are to do our duty by the public we serve”. We agree and believe that new course must at long last hold to account charities that claim to be providing aid, while aiding and abetting terrorist affiliated groups and antisemitic narratives.  The Lawfare Project is a legal think tank and litigation fund that files cases against antisemitic discrimination around the world

Why is Board silent on Arab village demolition? ARON KELLER

eard the joke about the Jewish communal organisation that felt so intimidated by young Jews building a succah they decided to call the police? Let me explain. A few weeks ago, a group of Na’amod activists gathered outside the offices of the Board of Deputies to protest the Board’s failure to condemn the Israeli Government’s plans to demolish the Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar. The village is home to the Jahalin tribe who are originally from the Negev, within the Green Line, but were expelled by the Israel Defence Forces in the 1950s. According to B’Tselem, Khan al-Ahmar is home to around 173 people, including 92 children and teenagers. It has a mosque and a school, which serves more than 150 children aged six to 15. Israel has been threatening to displace this community for years, partly to make room for settlement expansion. To this end, Israeli authorities have attempted to make the lives of Khan al-Ahmar

residents intolerable by refusing to provide running water, electricity, a proper sewage system, and by prohibiting the construction of homes and other structures. In May, Israel’s Supreme Court ruled the state may demolish the homes in Khan al-Ahmar and relocate residents. The displacement of civilians against their will, unless for specific security purposes to protect them, is a war crime. Despite condemnation from the UK Government, the European Parliament, the UN, and the UK Reform and Liberal Judaism movements, the Board – which claims to represent the largest number of British Jews – has remained shamefully silent. International pressure is one of the only tools Khan al-Ahmar inhabitants have at their disposal, which is why it’s disappointing to see the Board abrogating its moral responsibility. We hoped to highlight this point by erecting a succah, singing Jewish songs and reciting prayers and literature, in front of the Board’s offices. Instead of engaging us in dialogue, it decided to call the cops and resort to smears. Writing in Jewish News, Board president Marie van der Zyl alleges that we failed to

This is simply false. As the Jewish Chronicle reported, police had already confirmed that we were well within our rights to protest and thus did not require a permit. Van der Zyl also complains that our use of a succah represents a “subversion of Jewish sacred rites for political ends”. During Succot, we celebrate the fragile conditions endured by our ancestors as they left Egypt by spending a week in make-shift huts. As Orly Noy points out in +972 Magazine, the succot Jewish people reside in for the festival bear a striking resemblance to the “dilapidated shacks that house the residents of Khan al-Ahmar, from which the state is trying to expel them”. Those who believe that making a connection between Succot and the importance of

protecting vulnerable Palestinian communities from destruction is a ‘subversion’ of Judaism should ask themselves to what sort of Judaism do they subscribe. We know the Board’s silence is deliberate. It rarely hesitates in defending the occupation, despite it running against all the values we hold as Jews. But sometimes the Board gets it right, as it did in condemning the Nation State Law. While it is unfortunate the Board continues to treat young Jews who oppose Israeli occupation with disdain, we are optimistic it can also play a crucial positive role in ending the British Jewish community’s support for the occupation.  Na’amod is a movement of British Jews seeking to end communal support for Israel’s presence in the West Bank

Photographer who put the 20th century in focus LEON NASH

M

ax Nash, a war photographer who worked for the Associated Press for more than 40 years, passed away last month, aged 77. Max wasn’t the type of photographer to stay safe behind his camera lens. He covered the Vietnam and Cambodian wars, the Israeli occupation of Lebanon, the Palestinian uprising and riots in the West Bank and Gaza in the late 1980s, the first Gulf War and a rash of bombings in Israel in the 1990s. Many obituaries have been written in recent days, from The New York Times and The Washington Post in the United States to the Daily Mail and the Sun in the UK. I would like to give a little insight into the Max I knew. He was my best friend. I never

told him that, but I believe he knew it. He had a way of knowing most things. If he didn’t know it already, he was able to find out within an hour from his many contacts. This was a man who met virtually every person worth meeting. The list is long and ranges from Menachem Begin and Golda Meir to Jackie Kennedy Onassis, the latter appearing in a picture he took of her walking barefoot on the beach in Hof Dor, Israel. You only have

to look at the smile on her face to know that he has just said something that greatly amused her. He saved a number of lives. Many reporters and photographers will tell you he directly saved them while he was a photographer during the wars in Vietnam and Cambodia – but I believe he also had a hand in saving thousands of others too. Nash developed and edited what became the most iconic photograph of the Vietnam war – the

image taken by Nick Ut that turned American public opinion against the conflict and brought it to an end. It’s the photo of the little girl running, screaming and scared, having had her clothes burnt off her by napalm that had been dropped on her village. Simply put, Nash helped end the Vietnam war. He was a true gentleman from the old school, the most honourable person I ever met and one who could

talk his way out of most situations. To give one recent example, Max was pulled over by two policewomen last month, while driving in London. They ended up walking away laughing instead of writing him a ticket. He also recently confronted a thief he saw on the London Underground stealing a laptop from a businessman. Max was half the thief’s size but had no fear and actually managed to convince the thief to give the laptop back. Once you’ve seen the horrors of war, there isn’t much in daily life that can scare you. He lived his life for his photography and his family; his wife Clara and children Eleanor and Michael. Max lived a life that most of us can only dream of, and was laid to rest at Jewish Joint Burial Society Woodland Cemetery. I would say to him rest well, my friend, and thank you for letting me share a small part of your truly amazing life. • Leon Nash was not related to Max.

The 20th Finchley Scout’s first group, meeting after Yom Tov, took part in a scientist badge activity. Making goo from a solid state, to a liquid and back again, they also carried out other experiments including exploding volcanos. Group scout leader Debra Morris said: “The children loved doing their experiments for the scientist badge. Everyone enjoyed investigating and got hands-on involvement with reactions and science. It didn’t matter who they were or their school level or age – they all worked as teams.”

Former MP Lord Patten spoke to 70 guests at World Jewish Relief’s Connections committee fundraising evening. In conversation with BBC journalist and Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis, he spoke on topics including Catholicism and celibacy, the search for his Irish ancestry and his days under Thatcher. He said the presence of Labour Party antisemitism was an ‘unpleasant nastiness – an odd jerk backwards to an unattractive Britain of the past’.

things not to ask a convert R

eader, it’s difficult being a convert. Particularly someone whose ethnic heritage makes them stick out like a sore, or – as I like to think – like a rather glamorously manicured thumb. Getting used to ‘three-day’ Yom Tovs, being pulled into shul politics, and having to explain to your colleagues for the umpteenth time that, no, I don’t roll on Shabbas and, yes, I don’t use electricity but I’m not about to spend 25 hours by candlelight. Batting off a barrage of well-meaning but rather nosy questions about the process is a needless chore we can all do without. Here’s my handy guide to being sensitive around ‘new Jews’.

1. DON’T ASK IF SOMEONE IS CONVERTING

It’s sad, but to this day people ask me my name and then straight away ask if I am converting. This is incredibly alienating, off-putting and, frankly, rude. Conversion is deeply personal and it’s not something most people will want to share within two minutes of meeting. An infinitely better question to ask is ‘Do you have Shabbat lunch plans?’

2. DON’T ASK A CONVERT ABOUT THEIR STORY

A person’s conversion will be just one aspect of their current situation, albeit an important one. Be careful not to reduce them to just this aspect. A convert is not titillation, entertainment or there to add some flavour to shul gossip. Work on building a relationship based on trust and friendship and, if they feel comfortable enough to talk about their conversion, they will.

3. DON’T ASK, ‘WHERE ARE YOU REALLY FROM?’

If you live in London or any other major city you’ll know that most people ‘really’ come from somewhere else, including most Jews. Asking someone where they ‘come from’ can be ‘othering’ and, however well meaning, can make

them feel that they don’t belong. Furthermore, it exacerabates a view that all Jews are white, when we know that Jews come in all ethnicities – not just north London Ashki…

4. DON’T TELL THEM NOT TO POUR WINE

The Talmud says that it would be better for a person to allow himself to be tossed into a furnacethantowillinglyembarrassanotherperson, and that one who shames another in public is comparable to a murderer. Yes, Halacha says that a non-Jew is not supposed to pour wine for a Jew, but be sensitive! If you’ve invited a convert for lunch and that’s an issue for you then why not serve Mevushal wine?

5. DON’T ASK THEM ABOUT THE BETH DIN

For many converts, appearing before the Beth Din is a nerve-wracking and emotional experience. These learned Dayanim cast judgement upon our lives and hold the key to our Jewish future. A convert may have mixed experiences; some positive and some negative but, ultimately, it’s not something one shares lightly.

6. DON’T ASK THEM HOW LONG THEY HAVE LEFT OF THE PROCESS

Conversion is not necessarily a linear process. There may be many setbacks along the way and, as such, this is an insensitive question. It is also pretty nosy!

7. DON’T ASK THEM IF THEY ARE ENJOYING IT

Most converts choose to convert because they feel a spiritual yearning/feel a connection to/or let’s be frank, want to marry a Jew. Although there are many enjoyable aspects of Judaism – Shabbat, community, shul politics – the very nature of a Jewish conversion is a complete change of lifestyle. This can be very difficult in the beginning so, although it can be hugely fulfilling and joyous to be a practising Jew, the truth is that it is often

Family relations are difficult at the best of times. Some – not all – families see conversion as a rejection of their values. Why not instead make an extra effort to invite the person to Shabbat dinners, simchas and community gatherings? A synagogue should be a surrogate family – not least to those who need it most.

Perhaps one should think of it this way: wouldn’t it be fantastic if communities welcomed converts with open arms and helped

Anne reimagined

Israeli artists have adapted Anne Frank’s iconic work for new audiences using the techniques of the modern graphic novel, writes Matt Lebovic

P

acked with lavish illustrations and a pinch of sauciness, Anne Frank’s Diary: The Graphic Adaptation manages to give readers a more intimate take on the diarist than most of its cinematic and stage predecessors. The graphic novel adaptation was a years-long labour of love for Israeli filmmaker Ari Folman. Oscar-nominated for his Lebanon War-based Waltz with Bashir, Folman, whose parents survived the Holocaust, approached the acclaimed Diary of a Young Girl with caution. “If we were to illustrate the entire text in a graphic rendition it would require the better part of a decade and likely be 3,500 pages long,” said Folman. “The trickiest task, then, would be to retain roughly only five percent of Anne’s original diary while still being faithful to the entire work. Just published in English, the Anne Frank graphic novel came out in Israel and parts of Europe last year. There is, however, very little context about the genocide of Europe’s Jews within the novel’s 160 pages. Folman is currently working on a full-length animated film adaptation, set for release next year, that will paint a broader picture. For his partner on the novel, Folman chose David Polonsky, an award-winning children’s illustrator who also worked on Waltz with Bashir. Together, the artists brought visual expression to Frank’s cutting observations of those around her. “I think her power was the way she could observe the world of the adults surrounding her, because she did not have a normal maturation process in hiding,” said Folman, adding that the teen was “unbelievably intelligent and in many ways funny”. In terms of the diary’s iconic nature, Folman attempted to check some of his reverence for Anne Frank at the door. “I tried to disconnect from the issue of what it means to deal with The Diary of a Young Girl as much as I could, because I think the more you are frightened by the iconisation of the literary piece, the more you are paralysed,” said Folman. “We also did a lot of research to find good solutions within the framework we had to stay in.” Despite the text limitations of a

graphic novel, Folman and Polonsky created a more detailed portrait of Anne Frank than is typically offered by adapters of her diary. Notably, the novel fleshes out the personality of Margot, Frank’s older sister who is rarely given much to do on stage or screen. Intimate letters exchanged between the sisters about Anne’s burgeoning romance with Peter are included, and the Frank sisters’ competing traits are cleverly illustrated in a page labelled “It’s always about me and my sister.” Folman says: “Anne’s repeated – and unresolved – comparisons throughout the diary on her ‘problematic’ self with her ‘perfect’ sister Margot, we chose to encapsulate on a single graphic page that visualises the contrasts.”

Folman did not skirt around Frank’s anxiety and depression, portraying the diarist taking Valerian pills and waking from nightmares. To help express her moods, the creators deployed — for example — a morphing of her angst-ridden face with Munch’s The Scream. Some of the diarist’s nightmares are depicted in grimy detail, including the image of a flooded Amsterdam in which the “Secret Annex” inhabitants would have to swim. A scene of Anne and Margot

“fishing” children from the canal to clean them offers comic relief, as does the notion of Mrs van Pels “hiding another Jewish family” within the confines of her tooth cavity, as expressed by dentist Fritz Pfeffer. Although there have been quite a few graphic and comic-based diary adaptations over the years, this is the first to have been produced in partnership with the Basel-based Anne Frank Foundation set up by Anne’s father, Otto Frank, to carry on her legacy. As holder of the rights to Anne’s writings, the foundation allowed Folman and Polonsky not only use of the text, but the ability to switch some of what Anne wrote into modern lexicon. In all probability, Anne never referred to Mrs van Pels as “a diva from hell”. Likewise, it’s hard to imagine Peter whispering “Penis!” to Anne across the dinner table, in front of their families. Give Pete’s a chance

Charlotte Seligman enjoys the thrills and spills of Universal Studios theme park and has an awe-inspiring swim with dolphins in St Pete’s, Florida

P

otato skins. I still remember that first experience of a crunchy potato skin oozing with sour cream and melted cheese – and my brother and I vying for that last delicious mouthful. The warmth of the Atlantic Ocean and the hours we spent in it, riding huge waves on our lilos. What special times those childhood holidays in Florida were – and what wonderful memories they created. Some 36 years on, as I sat sipping another Pina Colada, my bare feet buried in the glorious white sand of St Petersburg beach, I wondered if my own children would come home with such equally fond memories. We didn’t have to wait long. Orlando’s theme parks are well known around the world. If your family can dream it, there’s a good chance they can do it there. We’d already experienced the magic of Disney, so this was a trip to see if Universal really is as good as everyone says. If you’re a fan of the silver screen, then this is the park for you. Blockbuster films and hit television shows help create the fantasy adventure and bring it to life, as do the special effects. If it’s not speed and fire, then the huge lashings of water will have you soaked – but laughing at the members of your party who end up wetter than you. The balance of heart-pounding explosions with more whimsical adventures make the park a wonderful fit for all ages.

I was crying with laughter on the Despicable Me Minion Mayhem ride, much to the embarrassment of my children, but they had the last laugh when they schlepped me on to the Rip Ride Rocket, which peaks some 17 storeys over the park and begins with a gravity-defying 90 degree climb towards the sky. You even get to choose the song you want to help drown out your own ear-shattering shrieks. Thanks to Gloria Gaynor, I did indeed survive! After the thrills and spills of the rollercoaster rides, there’s nowhere better to immerse yourself in all the magic than the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. I’m not even that much of a Harry Potter fan, but I was spellbound. Walking down the cobbled streets of Diagon Alley makes you feel just like the title star of the famous films. You can also see the enormous Knight Bus and the ancestral home of the Black family – No 12 Grimmauld Place. We couldn’t resist a stop at Honeydukes sweet shop either, and it wasn’t just the kids who thoroughly enjoyed themselves here! You mustn’t leave the park without a ride on the gleaming Hogwart’s Express, which of course departs from Platform 9¾ at Kings Cross. Fortunately, the train ride wasn’t the end of our Orlando journey. Tired feet required a rest and my bucket list still needed ticking off. Our next Floridian adventure was swimming with

Dolphins at Discovery Cove. It’s truly a remarkable place. The dolphins look as if they’re literally smiling for the pictures. Both my boys shared their “first kiss” with Bimini, our beautiful bottlenose female, who took us for a torso tow in the water, melted our hearts and left me in tears, so in awe was I of these magnificent and intelligent creatures. Discovery Cove is a paradise of rocky lagoons surrounded by lush landscaping, tropical reefs and winding rivers, waterfalls and white beaches. You also get complimentary cocktails (and food) included with your tickets, which is a bonus when the kids are winding their way down the lazy river and you can’t pull yourself off the private cabana that’s been specially reserved. It’s not all dolphins here either. You can don a dive helmet and get up close and personal to an array of sting rays, tropical fish and sharks. Thankfully, the sharks are separated by a 21ft long panoramic window, but if you’re brave you can swim with them. An unlikely choice for us, given the 14-yearold son cried at the Nemo-sized fish that brushed

past his thigh in the snorkelling pool. It was however a day full of memories and the smiles stayed with us all the way to St Petersburg beach, our home on the Gulf coast for the next 11 nights. This is where you can sink back into soft sand that’s almost as white as snow and enjoy the natural beauty of a place listed in the Guinness World Records for having the most consecutive days of pure, unadulterated, sunshine. The place has a vibe alluring to couples and families, as well as the magnificent beach. Life here revolves around it. From your morning game of volleyball to cocktails at six and s’mores around the firepit while watching sunset. St Pete’s is also home to a flourishing Jewish community, as well as synagogues, schools, the Florida Holocaust Museum and a Kosher deli for the more observant types. Foodies will also love this place. A holiday here is not complete unless you’ve eaten sticky wings, a grouper sandwich, fish tacos, Wisconsin cheese curds (otherwise known as spicy fried cheese balls) and tater tots – deep fried potatoes to you and me. All that of course must be washed down with a slice of Key Lime Pie. Locals also love Willy’s, a casual eatery on the beach front, with titter aplenty caused by such named dishes as Grandpa Willy’s Special and Willy’s Big One. With all we had experienced in Florida, there were no prizes for guessing the one memory we would never forget…

What does the Torah say about... Banksy shredding his own art

Adam and Eve eat from the forbidden fruit, Cain murders his brother in cold blood and humanity becomes so depraved that they are wiped out in a flood. To add insult to injury, humanity 2.0 attempts a rebellion against the Almighty with the Tower of Babel, resulting in linguistic and geographical conflict. This is a world that appears to be spiralling to self-destruction with the three major flaws mentioned in Pirkei Avot 4:21: Jealousy, lust and the pursuit of honour. Lech Lecha sees the focus shift to one man and his family. Abram is singled out for a mission, to rectify a heathen world devoid of morals by bringing humanity back to an awareness of God. Rabbi Naftali Tzvi Yehuda Berlin explains that Bereishit is referred to as sefer hayashar, “the book of the just”, referring to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob and their families. The word yashar actually means “straight”, meaning one could draw a figurative straight line from their values to actions. Abraham is a philosopher, who discovers the world has an Infinite Creator, decades before that Creator ever appears to him. He rectifies the sin of jealousy through pursuing loving kindness, as evidenced from his open home and his desire to save Sodom. Isaac is a man of inner strength and moral fortitude, as seen during the episode of the Akeida and rectifies the sin of lust. Jacob, the man of truth, fights for his values against those who sought to deceive him and rectifies the sin of (false) honour. The stories of Bereishit are full of layers of meaning, teaching us how to draw a straight line from values to action.  Rabbi Roodyn is education director of Jewish Futures Trust

BY RABBI ARIEL ABEL In a stunt that shocked the art world, Banksy shredded his piece, Girl with Balloon, minutes after it was sold for more than £1million. A hapless copycat, expecting to double the value of his £40,000 print by doing the same to his artwork, caused the value to plummet to just £1. So, what does the Torah say about destroying property? Normally, wantonly destroying useful items of value is forbidden by Torah law under the injunction of bal tashchit – illegal destruction. This biblical prohibition stems from the ban on felling trees in circumstances where it is not strictly necessary as determined by Torah law. Fits of anger are halachically criticised as akin to idol worship, but if someone is

in a state of indignation or severe distress, such as on hearing bad news, tearing a garment is a requirement, as this will let out the overwhelming emotion and reduce the risk of permanent damage to one’s health, such as a heart attack or stroke. For this reason, mourners tear their garments on hearing of the passing of a loved one or next to the coffin. Although the garment is torn, it is not destroyed, and there are intricate laws

applied for the sewing up of the garment for re-use. At weddings, a cup is crushed underfoot by the bridegroom in apparent contradiction to the usual rule. Here, the valid excuse is that in so doing, there is a public memorial to the destroyed Temple – a far greater tragedy as it has yet to be rebuilt – and so the famous chuppah scenario. Therefore, if the destruction was safely presumed to double its worth, there was a halachically valid excuse to destroy it, as its apparent destruction could be viewed as the opposite – its tikkun, or further improvement. Progressively Speaking Why does Britain need a permanent Holocaust memorial outside Parliament?

‘God wanted to wipe out the world’ BY RABBI LAURA JANNER-KLAUSNER Why did the Creator decide to wipe out the world? The story of Noah is one part of Torah where we want to ignore its reality – the portrayal of the Creator of the universe as murderous and vengeful. Many atheists use the flood as an example to testify against religion as a concept. Comedian Tim Minchin even uses it as a satirical source text for drowning kittens in his song, The Good Book. Is this the best example set by the source of the world? Reading this story literally, the tale of the flood is abhorrent. If we compare Noah to other times where our biblical characters face similar situations, a deeper truth emerges. Noah is told that everyone will be killed and to start preparations to save himself. What is his response? Silence – Noah just gets on with saving himself. Abraham faces a similar situation. With Sodom and Gomorrah about to be destroyed, what is his response? He bargains with God, trying to find some-

thing to make God relent. The search for 10 good people is his bargaining chip, but there were not even 10 good people. The cities are wiped out. Finally, there is Moses. After the Golden Calf, Moses is told that God will destroy the people and start again from him. Moses doesn’t allow it. He doesn’t bargain, he says no. Moses even says his name should be erased if God won’t relent. God has a change of heart and the Children of Israel are saved. Our Torah is teaching us vital lessons about violence and genocide. If we think we can leave it in the hands of God to prevent horrific events, we are abdicating our responsibility as partners in continuing the work of creation. These terrible instances are not caused by God’s actions, but our inactions. We have to be willing to stand up to even the greatest authority of all, or we will allow tragedies to occur.  Laura Janner-Klausner is the

BY RABBI AARON GOLDSTEIN Northwood & Pinner Liberal Synagogue recently twinned with the Progressive Jewish community in the Ukrainian city of Lviv, formerly known as Lemberg and Lwow/Lvov. In Lviv, there is only a wall standing of the once magnificent Golden Rose Synagogue and a poignant memorial. Similar in design to that proposed for London, it is far more subtle and includes moving testimonials. Visiting, I am in tears thinking about the hundreds of thousands of Jews from this city murdered by the Nazis. Families from our shul recently visited Hamlyn and Hanover to lay stolperstein (stepping stones) outside homes of their murdered relatives.

Our members have also sponsored stolperstein outside homes and shops of Jews of Kolín, Czech Republic. One of our Torah scrolls is from Kolín and we have displayed a damaged Czech Scroll as a reminder they survived, but the Jews of our Torah towns didn’t. All of these examples are “meaningful locations that best reflect the impact of the Holocaust” – the government’s stated aim for a Holocaust Memorial in London. Jewish communities of all denominations in Britain have similar ways of keeping alive the memory of those who perished. But what about reaching non-Jews, especially young

people who live in areas where there are no or very few Jews? I’m unconvinced on the memorial for Parliament Square and am sympathetic to criticism from British peers, who all lost family in the Shoah. But even if it did, do we really need another London-centric memorial? The message of the Holocaust is already being delivered around the UK by many organisations, including the Holocaust Educational Trust, Holocaust Memorial Day and The Journey outreach project of the National Holocaust Centre and Museum. I believe the money would be better spent reinforcing the efforts of these organisations in educating future generations of Britons. dispute. Sometimes, the longer a dispute has been going on, the more reluctant the parties are to use mediation. In fact, by suggesting mediation, you are actually signalling to the other side your intention to find a settlement to your dispute. There is nothing weak in that. You will be indicating to the other side that you are both willing and open to discussing all aspects of your dispute. By its very nature, such a debate will include reviewing both the strengths and weaknesses of your case, but equally also those of the other party. That is clearly an advantage to all parties in seeking to analyse the merits of the

dispute so as to find the true settlement parameters. Primarily, parties go to mediation because it allows them an alternative, quicker and far more economical means of resolving their dispute. A party who wants to bring to an end a protracted and expensive dispute is taking a positive step. Mediation allows the parties flexibility to achieve a settlement that both sides agree to. That is very different to having a judge make a binding and often undesirable result for one or even both parties. So give mediation a go, take control of your dispute, be confident in the process and you will not be disappointed.

Crowning achievement CHARITY Dozens of Jewish runners took part in the Royal Parks Half Marathon on Sunday, raising more than £60,000 for charity. Kisharon’s runners raised more than £10,000. Acting chief executive Richard Franklin said: “We’re truly appreciative and inspired by those who raised much-need funds.” Norwood benefitted from the same amount, thanks to its 15 runners. Its chief executive, Dr Beverley Jacobson, who also took part, said: “Their dedication and enthusiasm for Norwood is inspiring.” Ruth and Marcel Beren were part of a team of 14, who raised more than £17,000 for Donnie’s Fund – which was set up in memory of Donnie Berenblut, who born with a life-limiting condition and tragically passed away after just 142 days. Ruth said: “Donnie only lived 142 days, but some of his happiest moments were spent in the royal parks, so it seemed apt to run through these beautiful spaces and raise funds in his name.” Benjamin Radstone and Daniel Bratt raised more than £1,000 for World Jewish Relief. Benjamin said: “It was a

great run through the beautiful parks of London and an honour to run for WJR.” Camp Simcha’s six runners raised more than £3,000, which included Lee Bladon, Adam Dawson and Danny Myers running as Team Evie to raise funds for the charity’s night-time respite project. Simon Walton and Michael Walton raised more than £1,000 for Myisrael – a charity set up in 2008 by Dani Franks to help UK donors support small charities in Israel. Simon, who’s the chairman of the charity, together with his uncle finished in 1:55 – and ran sporting Jewish News logos on their shirts. He said: “It was fantastic to raise so much money to support Myisrael’s under-the-radar charities.” Jewish Care’s 12 runners raised more than £8,500. Chief executive Daniel Carmen Brown, who ran with son Josh, said: “It was fantastic to run amongs a team of dedicated runners who I’d like to thank for taking part in this challenge to support Jewish Care”. Chai’s two runners, Joyce Misrahi and Zak Brilliant raised more than £11,350. The iconic 13-mile route takes in four of the London’s eight Royal Parks – Hyde Park, The Green Park, St James’s Park and Kensington Gardens, as well as some of the capital’s most world-famous landmarks.
