Rowling takes broomstick to anti-Semites Harry Potter author says non-Jews should also ‘shoulder the burden’ The bestselling author of the Harry Potter books waded into the anti-Semitism debate yesterday by suggesting it’s time that non-Jews “start shouldering the burden”, writes Jenni Frazer. Writing on social media on Wednesday, J.K Rowling (pictured, inset), who has 14.4 million followers on Twitter, sounded exasperated when she highlighted a seemingly “innocent” post stating that “Judaism is a religion and not a race”. Presumably, the post added, this was a “defence” against being called racist. But Rowling was having none of it. She wrote: “Most UK Jews in my timeline are currently having to field this kind of crap, so perhaps some of us non-Jews should start shouldering the burden. Anti-Semites think this is a clever argument, so tell us, do: were atheist Jews exempted from wearing the yellow star? #antisemitism”.

Almost immediately the writer received nearly 2,000 “likes” and hundreds of re-tweets. Many of the respondents were Jewish users of Twitter who thanked her for her timely intervention and support. Her move came a few hours after the comedian David Baddiel received an abusive message in response to his thanking a woman who had enjoyed his one-man show, currently on tour in Durham. When Baddiel replied that “my geography teacher would be proud of me”. he received this message: “You disgusting yid, nobody is proud of you. I bet you can smell the change in my pocket.” Baddiel concluded ironically: “Antisemitism isn’t a real thing.” Rowling saw the exchange and decided to intervene more generally several hours later.

Corbyn crunch talks next week Community leaders have confirmed the first face-to-face talks with Jeremy Corbyn in two years, but have pulled out of a broader followup meeting set for the following day. The first talks, with the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council, come in the wake of last month’s unprecedented Enough is Enough demonstration against anti-Semitism in Labour and the party’s handling of it. However, the meeting was supposed to be followed by a round-table ‘Respect and Engagement’ discussion with Corbyn and Labour’s new general secretary Jennie Formby and other Jewish groups including Jewish Voice For Labour, but the Board, JLC and at least six other Jewish organisations have decided to opt out. The Board and JLC said that in the first meeting they would discuss “a set of specific actions which we have already proposed and published and which can help the Labour Party tackle its anti-Semitism problem”. The two organisations added that, after this meeting: “We will have seen whether he and the Labour Party has committed to taking the action we need against anti-Semitism.” Corbyn had agreed to an agenda for talks set out by the Board and JLC, including their proposal that current and future disciplinary cases be concluded in a set period of time. Ken Livingstone’s case is set to be concluded a year after a second investigation was opened. The community organisations also called

Jonathan Arkush and JLC chair Jonathan Goldstein said: “Last month’s protest was a necessary moment of catharsis, as painful for Labour as it was for our community, but we cannot now return to ‘business as usual’. “We need this to be a genuine turning point and will do everything we can to make it so. We can achieve this together if Corbyn can fulfil his pledge to be our ‘militant ally’ in the fight against anti-Semitism and demonstrate his understanding that what is now needed is firm action and not just words.” The Board and JLC had set as a condition of talks that Corbyn condemn the targeting of MPs who attended the rally against anti-Semitism – which he did in his Jewish News interview. Jewish Voice for Labour (JVL), which has long argued that claims of anti-Semitism in Labour are exaggerated and staged a counter demo to the Enough is Enough rally, has also been invited to the round-table discussion. Speaking about pulling out of the second meeting, the Board and JLC added in their statement: “We urge other Jewish organisations to follow our lead and to focus on how Mr Corbyn and Ms Formby respond to the concrete actions we have proposed.” As of Wednesday evening, JW3, CST, Liberal Judaism, Masorti Judaism, the Jewish Representative Council of Greater Manchester and Union of Jewish Students have all said they will not be attending the roundtable talks with Corbyn next Wednesday.

SHADOW MINISTER HINTS AT SETTLEMENTS BOYCOTT The Shadow International Development Secretary, has strongly suggested Labour could support the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement in the future, after a period of “education of a whole generation”. In an interview with the political magazine The House, Kate Osamor, a key ally of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, sidestepped the conclusion of deputy leader Tom Watson that BDS was “morally wrong”. She said: “Sometimes people make statements but then they don’t look about the history around apartheid, around separation, around people living side by side. If anything, there’s a different treatment for one over another and boycotting products. “South African produce did make a difference and it raised awareness. For me it’s about raising awareness and bringing more people to a place where they understand ‘what can I do to help’”. She added: “At the end of the day, it is choice. It’s up to you what produce you buy. That’s very different to me saying they are not allowed to make

produce. I am saying people should not buy those produce from illegal settlements. If you choose to, it’s up to you.” Asked whether Labour could support BDS as official party policy, Osamor said that “unfortunately, a lot of people are not really educated on illegal settlements, people don’t understand what’s really going on, and it’s gone over their head. “But we need to get to a place where we start educating everybody and make a decision based on that and then say, ‘This could be an alternative, this could be an option’. “The biggest issue for me is educating people around conflict across the globe and

finding a place where we can get some resolution for people.” Osamor was asked why Corbyn had directly commented on the situation in Gaza, while a statement on Syria was attributed to a Labour spokesperson. She acknowledged that statements should more properly come from department spokespeople, but also believed Corbyn was entitled to say what he thought. But she added: “We don’t want this to be about the British media and Jeremy, which it has become, as opposed to that people are being gassed, people are being shot or whatever and the government has decided this is what they need to do.” Osamor later posted on Twitter: “It is not Labour Party policy to support BDS and I fully support Labour’s commitment to comprehensive peace in the Middle East based on a two-state solution – a secure Israel alongside a secure and viable state of Palestine.” She added: “The quotes picked up in the media have been used selectively from a long and wideranging interview and simply don’t represent my views.”

Eradicating Jew hate a ‘priority’ The new general secretary of the Labour Party has told Opposition MPs that Shami Chakrabarti, author of the party’s controversial 2016 report on anti-Semitism, is to join the national executive committee working group on the issue, writes Jenni Frazer. In a private briefing note to MPs ahead of Tuesday’s Commons debate on anti-Semitism, Jennie Formby said she and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn were “determined to eradicate the stain of anti-Semitic attitudes in our party, and this will be a central priority in my role as general secretary”. Formby said all constituency party

secretaries had been told that “individuals or organisations expressing concern about anti-Semitism must not be criticised for doing so”. She had made the move, she said, following reports that some constituency parties were holding meetings to discuss their MP’s attendance at the Enough is Enough demonstration. She outlined a variety of steps she was implementing “to help to eliminate the causes of bottlenecks and unnecessary delays” in dealing with various complaints. Labour has now seconded a team of lawyers to support the party’s governance and legal unit

to deal with outstanding cases. Formby said: “We must deal with complaints more quickly, more consistently, more efficiently and more robustly.” Insisting “anti-Semitism has absolutely no place in our movement, and members and MPs who raise their concerns must not have them dismissed”, she pledged to initiate a programme of “specialist antiSemitism training” in the context of improved training and education for Labour’s membership. Emotions run high in Commons ovation from other MPs — a rarity in the Commons, where strictly speaking applause is not allowed after speeches. But MPs were in a bullish and defiant mood as evidenced by the Communities Secretary, Sajid Javid, who had called the debate. “We need to show the Jewish community that we do get it, that we recognise the pernicious prejudice of anti-Semitism”, he told the Commons, and, though thanking Jeremy Corbyn for attending the opening of the session, accused him of “a lack of moral clarity” in stamping out anti-Semitism. Quoting the Board of Deputies, “Where does antiSemitism lead when it is unchecked?”, Javid declared: “We have to change minds and attitudes. The Holocaust did not begin in the gas chambers. It began with nothing more than words.”

Politicians from across the parliamentary spectrum lined up on Tuesday in an unprecedented – and at times tearful – House of Commons denunciation of anti-Semitism, writes Jenni Frazer. But the target of much of their anger, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, absented himself from the chamber for a large part of the three-hour debate, only returning towards the end to sit on the front bench while his colleague, Shadow Home Secretary Diane Abbott, summed up for the Opposition — and generated shouting and catcalls from her own party. Labour’s deputy leader Tom Watson pointedly moved from the front bench to sit among the backbenchers next to Luciana Berger, whose passionate personal story was one of the highlights of the debate and drew an extraordinary standing

And Javid set the tone for many of the 27 speakers who took part, by ending his speech with the Board of Deputies and Jewish Leadership Council slogan: “Enough is enough”. So many people wanted to speak — primarily from the Labour Party, with heartfelt and emotional denunciations from MP after MP — that speeches were severely curtailed for time. But that did not prevent an early intervention from Labour Dudley MP Ian Austin, calling for Ken Livingstone to be “booted out” of the party. He made his call in the middle of a pledge by the Shadow Communities Secretary, Andrew Gwynne, that Labour would “put our house in order”, while going on to deplore the “coded language and dog-whistle euphemisms” infecting anti-

Semitic discourse. Among the contributions across the Chamber were MPs who represented constituencies with a strong Jewish community, including Scottish Nationalist Stewart Malcom McDonald, who sits for Glasgow South, and his East Renfrewshire Conservative neighbour, Paul Masterton. But the three stand-out speeches were undoubtedly the fierce and passionate words from Labour’s Luciana Berger, her colleague Ruth Smeeth, and the veteran campaigner against anti-Semitism, John Mann. Berger, MP for Liverpool Wavertree, gave a personal account of the endless antiSemitic abuse she has suffered since her student days. Her words prompted MP Jess Phillips, a rising star in the party, to applaud her in solidarity.

“I was 19 when I received my first piece of hate mail,” Ms Berger said. “It described me as a dirty, Zionist pig.” Four people have so far been convicted since 2013 for the anti-Semitic abuse directed at her as an MP, three of whom have been imprisoned: in the wake of one of those convictions, she said, an American far-right website had launched a hashtag, “Filthy Jewbitch campaign”. Berger said she made no apology for holding her own party to a higher standard. “My party urgently needs to address this issue publicly and consistently”, she said. “Denial and prevarication are not options”. John Mann, speaking without notes, spoke of threats of rape made to his wife and other threats to his family as a result of his campaigning against anti-Semitism. He

denounced members of the left-wing action group, Momentum, who had targeted MPs for standing in solidarity with the Jewish community at the Enough is Enough demonstration; and he said clearly that those who described the complaints about anti-Semitism as “a smear”, needed to apologise publicly. Ruth Smeeth, who said she had been “born into Labour as surely I was born into my faith”, read out a litany of the antiSemitic insults levelled at her on a daily basis. And she made it clear that many of those came from people under the banner of “JC for PM” while accusing her of being against the Labour leader. “How dare they reduce something so toxic and heinous to the level of political pointscoring?” she said.  Editorial comment, p24

More than one thousand people gathered in London’s Hyde Park on Sunday to hear messages of “defiance” at the annual Yom Hashoah commemoration, writes Jack Mendel. The community’s main Holocaust Memorial event saw London Mayor Sadiq Khan issue a warning about allowing “intolerance and hatred to fester” in society. Khan was joined by Israeli Ambassador Mark Regev and Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mervis at the gathering, marking 75 years since the Warsaw Ghetto uprising. In a powerful statement, addressing guests at the National Holocaust Memorial Gardens, Khan said: “We must confront the reality around the world that anti-Semitism and hate crime is on the rise again. “Jewish communities are feeling unsafe within this very country, within this very city. This is completely unacceptable and mustn’t go unchecked. The call of the hour is for strong, solid and responsible leadership to take on anti-Semitism. To send out the right tone of message, that will strive to get rid of this evil in our society.”

Chief Rabbi Mirvis urged strong political leadership in tackling anti-Semitism, as he reflected on acts of defiance during the Holocaust. He said: “Responsible leadership is always necessary to fight against the scourge of anti-Semitism and all evils within our society. “We are witnessing a worrying increase of anti-Semitic sentiment and activity throughout the continent, including here in Britain.” Israel’s ambassador Regev took aim at those who “profess solidarity with the victims of the Holocaust… who claim to stand against antiSemitism and oppose racism in all its forms.” Regev asked whether “some people have a problem with the fact that the Jews have decided to be the victim no more.” He added: “To all those who call for Israel’s destruction, whether it’s the regime in Iran or its terrorist proxies, Hezbollah and Hamas, or those who express solidarity with them in this very country, I say this: we will protect ourselves continue to call out those who turn a blind eye in the face of anti-Jewish bigotry.” Bergen Belsen survivor Gena Turgel also addressed guests with her testimony.

A record number of UK participants took part in this year’s March of the Living, walking from Auschwitz to Birkenau in memory of more than one million Jews murdered at the camp, writes Andrew Sherwood in Poland. In all some 12,000 people took part in the two-mile march, starting at the ‘Arbeit Macht Frei’ sign. The event was the culmination of five days of education, tours and talks. MOTL UK founder Scott Saunders said: “The trip has clearly had a profound effect on so many people and that makes it a success. I encourage everybody to make the trip and would imagine that over the next three or four years our numbers will increase, which will ensure more and more people get to experience this.” Former Auschwitz prisoner Harry Olmer, 90, was one of seven survivors who joined the UK delegation. He said: “It makes me proud to be here and to help the memories stay with

younger people. Over the course of a year, I will speak to hundreds of people. It’s important for people to know what went on and I hope they absorb everything I say. It’s important to do this. I know some people who suffered don’t walk to talk about it, but for me that’s tragic. This story should be told.”  Karen Pollock, page 6

Special Report / March Of The Living

I visit many camps, but this trip is unique Holocaust Educational Trust chief executive Karen Pollock’s March Of The Living diary... Working at HET, I have visited Holocaust sites with thousands of teachers and students, but I still felt nervous going on the March Of The Living. I didn’t know what to expect, but looked forward to being among Jewish people. We started at Warsaw’s Jewish Cemetery, where we saw Jewish graves dating back to the 1800s, the mass graves of those murdered by the Nazis and tombstones of Jews who died after the Holocaust. Seeing the story of Jewish life played out within this burial site left a poignant mark. We visited the Polin Museum, charting the history of Warsaw’s Jews. Its chairman, Marian Turski, who endured Auschwitz, Buchenwald, Rehmsdorf and a death march to Theresienstadt, told us he had dreamt of building a museum to celebrate centuries of Jewish history in Poland. Finally, we learnt about the Oneg

Shabbat. Seeing one of the milk churns buried under the Warsaw Ghetto, full of stories of life there, was incredible and people had taken huge risks to record their experiences, showing unimaginable bravery. Monday 9 April Built and operated by the SS in the Lublin suburbs, Majdanek concentration camp, where 59,000 Jews were murdered, is a chilling place. We saw the gas chambers and the memorial with the ashes of some of those killed. Standing so close to the town, you wonder what people outside knew of the daily horrors. Our day ended at Lublin’s Yeshiva, and we remembered Alec Ward, the amazing survivor who was born in the town and passed away over Pesach. Tuesday 10 April Today we visited Belzec. At least

434,500 Jewish men, women and children were murdered here in months. They were forced down a narrow, camouflaged path to their deaths, unaware of what was to come. As we walked, I felt fear for those who had walked that same path. But, unlike them, I was able to walk out. In Markowa, we heard the story of Jozef and Wiktoria Ulma, devout Catholic Poles, who risked everything to harbour a Jewish family. They were discovered and shot, alongside their seven children. We also saw the forest outside Tarnow, where 45 percent of the village was slaughtered and buried in pits. Throughout the Shoah across eastern Europe, there were massacres in fields, forests and ravines by German SS and police units or by local collaborators. There was no dignity for these Jews slaughtered and left in

unmarked mass graves. It was a difficult day that I will never forget. Wednesday 11 April As the sun set, Yom HaShoah began. We took part in a ceremony at the Galicia museum, remembering the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered, and reaffirming our dedication to saying Never Again. Thursday 12 April The march. It is impossible to understand the Holocaust. The more we learn, the more questions we have. We learnt about those who risked their own lives to help Jews – and also about those who, with a flick of a finger, decided life or death. This week was often painful, but as we marched and stood among thousands of Jews from across the globe, singing Hebrew songs, draped

in Israeli flags, the experience was uniquely uplifting. I stood shoulderto-shoulder with Holocaust survivors, Mala Tribich MBE, Eve Kugler, Harry Olmer and Ivor Pearl; Jewish students from youth movements and universities across the world, and such champions of our cause as Sir Eric Pickles, Ian Austin MP and Joan Ryan MP. As we marched from Auschwitz I to Auschwitz-Birkenau, I remembered the words of survivor Harry Spiro: “Hitler, you didn’t win.” And that’s what I thought as we walked the path of those who had been sent so brutally to their deaths. This visit focused on loss and destruction, as the Jews of Europe were ripped from their homes, families were torn apart, and murdered. But today, as we came together to remember, and to mourn, we also thought of our hope for the future.

Appeal to help save grandma’s life A Leeds businessman has embarked on an urgent campaign to find a stem cell donor to save the life of his mother, writes Jenni Frazer. Hilary Levinson, 62, who is now retired, formerly worked as a dinner lady at the Leeds Brodetsky Jewish Primary School. She and her family are members of Street Lane Gardens Synagogue in Leeds, and live in the Alwoodley neighbourhood. Last September, she was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and has been told that she urgently requires new stem cells from someone with a matching tissue type. Adam Levinson told Jewish News: “My mother was suffering from arthritis and went for a routine blood test. When that

showed she had a lower than normal white blood cell count, she had a biopsy and was diagnosed with AML. She had one round of chemotherapy, which seemed to work, but after a third round she was told that she would need a stem cell transplant.” The family – father Ronnie, Adam and his brother Daniel – have made contact with the Anthony Nolan Trust, which operates a national register for potential donors. Trust officials have told the Levinsons that their best hope is likely to come from the Jewish community, particularly in the 18-30 age band. Adam and his wife have recently had their first child, Jacob, and Adam is hoping that someone will come forward to be a match and save Hilary, the new grandmother.

He said: “I hadn’t heard of Anthony Nolan or stem cell transplantation before my mum was diagnosed, so I realise how important it is to raise awareness. “The Jewish community is such a close one – and I hope people from all ethnic backgrounds, including Jewish people, will sign up to the register to help people like my mum.” Anyone aged 16-to-30 and in good general health can join the Anthony Nolan register. Sir Eric Pickles and former chancellor Ed Balls have been made new cochairs of the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation (UKHMF)’s advisory board. The two former MPs were appointed by Prime Minister Theresa May, replacing Sir Peter Bazalgette, who has chaired since 2015. The UKHMF board, which is supporting the new Holocaust Memorial and Learning Centre, is looking to work with the government to complete the designing and building of the new exhibition.

TORY MPS VISIT ISRAEL FOR YOM HASHOAH Conservative MPs have met Palestinian chief negotiator Saeb Erekat during a visit to Israel and the Palestinian territories. Tories including Andrew Percy, Matthew Offord, Neil Parish, Steve Double and Sheryll Murray also attended a ceremony addressed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin, in a trip organised by Conservative Friends of Israel to coincide with Yom HaShoah, Israel’s Holocaust Remembrance Day.

More than 6,500 schoolchildren have shown off their creative skills for a special exhibition celebrating Israel’s 70th anniversary. Pupils from 33 Jewish primary and secondary schools submitted artwork for the Israel70: Building Artistic Connections exhibition, which is running at JW3 in Finchley Road. The exhibit will also be shown at the Babylonian Jewry Heritage Center in Or Yehuda, from 29 May to 31 August. Run in conjunction with PaJeS, the umbrella organisa-

tion for Jewish schools and supported by the Jewish Leadership Council and World Zionist Organisation, the project aims to help children find “a meaningful way of marking Israel70”. They were given the opportunity to explore the cultural, artistic and historical narratives of Israel through objects from 10 Israeli museums, including portraits by Reuven Rubin, The Shrine of the Book, where the Dead Sea Scrolls are housed, The Tower of David, the original words of the Hatikva and two suitcases that tell very different

stories of aliyah. These objects inspired quilts, papier mache masks, paintings, poems and jewellery crafted out of paper clips and pasta shells. Nic Abery of LooktoLearn, who conceived the project, said: “I wanted to give Jewish primary and secondary school students a meaningful way of marking Israel70. This project has given them a solid connection to living and breathing Israeli art, culture, history and heritage.” PaJeS’ Rabbi David Meyer said: “The Israel70 project is a wonderful initiative that brings to life the rich history of Israel, the relevance it has to our community and the significance of Israel’s independence.”

MAYA, 13, WILL CARRY BUCKETS FOR WATER A Jewish schoolgirl in Finchley has organised a sponsored walk around a playground, whereby she and other students have to carry buckets of water on their head to raise money for water projects in Tanzania. Maya Wiseman, 13, (pictured) decided she wanted to raise awareness and money for Tanzanian women and girls to get water so rather than asking for presents for her batmitzvah this year, she is seeking donations. The youngster, who spent the first nine years of her life living in Tanzania and India, persuaded her school to get behind her project, and her parents this week praised the efforts of the Archer Academy in East Finchley. “The headteacher, Lucy Harrison, has been brilliant along with all the staff,” said Maya’s father, Ian Shapiro. From Tuesday until Friday, Year 8 children and others will walk around the playground with water

buckets on their heads to help raise awareness and funds for Tanzania. Maya, who has already raised £1,200, will also walk 10,000 steps on each of these days, in a nod to the girls’ experiences in Africa. “These girls often have to walk miles every day just to get water, which is often unclean,” said Maya. “Because of this, they can’t go to school, get a job and fulfil their potential.” Donations can be made through justgiving.com/ fundraising/mayas-miles -and-miles

Women urge action on hate Fifty of the Jewish community’s leading women have written to local election candidates, urging them to tackle hate against their Muslim constituents. A letter signed by the Jewish women has been made public on the eve of this weekend’s upcoming NisaNashim Jewish and Muslim women’s conference, which has the backing of Prime Minister Theresa May. More needs to be done to protect Muslim women from abuse and attack, the Jewish women say. CCJ trustee Zaki Cooper said: “With its population of 2.4 billion people in 53 countries, spanning six continents, the Commonwealth is a truly multi-faith entity.”

Telly star Millie, 101, is mourned A centenarian who introduced television shows on Channel 4 earlier this year to mark 100 years of women getting the right to vote has passed away, weeks after turning 101, writes Jack Mendel, Millie Finger, born Millie Walvish on 30 March 1917, was a regular at Jewish Care’s Brenner Centre in Stepney – where she rekindled a bond with childhood friend and fellow 100-year-old Beattie Orwell. In February they became familiar voices when they turned into TV presenters to introduce shows such as Countdown and Hollyoaks. “‘She was like our mother.’ That is what many members of the Stepney staff team said to me before we all went to her funeral,” said Jamie Field, Jewish Care’s East London locality manager. “She really endeared herself to everyone she met but particularly those of us who were lucky enough to spend every day with her.” Millie was twice widowed, and tragically lost both her only daughter Hilary and only grandson Daniel, who died aged 10. “She didn’t have an easy life, but you wouldn’t know it speaking to her. Everyone genuinely loved her and never had a bad word to say about her,” added Field. Millie called Jewish Care and the Brenner Centre her lifelines, which she described to Jewish News in February as giving her “a reason to live”. After Millie’s daughter died a few years ago, she was left with only her niece and nephew. During the eulogy at her funeral at East Ham Jewish Cemetery, her niece Sandra Val-

MUSEUM RECEIVES ARTS COUNCIL FUNDS The National Holocaust Centre and Museum in Nottingham has received national accreditation from the Arts Council. The centre joins a select group of organisations including the Science and Natural History museums, recognised for high standards. The institution, known for its Forever Project which uses digital technology to deliver 3D testimony, was selected for membership of the Arts Council’s National Portfolio. It will get £300,00 for the next four years to expand its educational work.

UN AMBASSADORS ON ISRAEL VISIT Forty ambassadors to the United Nations are on a special visit to Israel this week. Despite a tenfold increase in the number of Jews in Israel since 1948, there are still two million fewer Jews alive today than there were on the eve of the Second World War, according to new Israeli government figures. Data published by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) on Holocaust Remembrance Day revealed that, at 14.5 million compared to 16.6m, the number of Jews in the world is still much lower than in 1939. In the 70 years since 1948, the number of Jews in Israel has risen from 449,000 to 6.45m today, but over the

The findings are based on data from the Demographic and Statistics Section of the Jews, as well as on the data of the Avraham Hartman Institute of Contemporary Jewry

Summit ‘boosts identity’ Poland’s Chief Rabbi has warned of overreaction to the country’s controversial legal moves to outlaw blaming Poland for any crimes during the Holocaust. And, speaking to a global leadership summit held at the weekend in Warsaw by Limmud FSU — Russian-speaking Jews from the former Soviet Union — Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich said: “Some of the Jewish responses to the Polish law were irresponsible. To say that all the Poles are antiSemites is not true, it’s hurtful.” But Limmud FSU chair, Matthew Bronfman, demurred, telling conference participants that the Polish law was very significant. He said: “My greatest fear about the law is that it’s a part of something larger, and it’s not just an isolated moment. I truly fear the wave of nationalism around Europe as a whole.” Bronfman and Schudrich took part in a special session to discuss the new law, passed in February, together with Israel’s ambassador to Poland, Anna Azari, and the American Jewish Committee’s central Europe director, Agnieszka Markiewicz. MARCH RECALLS SHOAH VICTIMS Two leaders of Limmud FSU, the organisation working with young Russian-speaking Jews from the former Soviet Union, took part in the annual international March of the Living last weekend, and lit torches at AuschwitzBirkenau in memory of the six million Jews who died in the Holocaust. Aaron Frenkel, Limmud FSU president, is the son of a Shoah survivor who was a prisoner at Auschwitz. His grandparents, aunts and uncles and cousins, all perished. Matthew Bronfman, chair of Limmud FSU, said his late father, Edgar Bronfman, former president of the World Jewish Congress, had fought for years for the rights of Jews. He said: “I light this torch on behalf of all the volunteers of Limmud FSU, and in the name of the Jewish people who suffered beyond the power of imagination in this very place. I stand here in the shadow of my father, who fought to restore honour and dignity to each and every Jew around the world.”

Hundreds of residents of the small Polish town of Plonsk have taken part in a procession to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Israel’s independence. Plonsk was the birthplace in 1886 of Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben-Gurion, previously known as David Gruen, who lived in the town until emigrating to Ottoman Palestine in 1906. Ben-Gurion is still remembered in the town, and the marchers passed several significant sites of his early life, including a square named after him situated on the site of the house where he was born, and the home of his uncle where he lived until he emigrated. Locals joined Limmud FSU and participants in the annual March of the Living for the procession, which was led by the mayor of

Plonsk, Andrzej Pietrasik, walking with the Chief Rabbi of Poland, Michael Schudrich, and Anna Azari, Israel’s ambassador to Poland. In a ceremony that followed the march, addresses were given by Plonsk’s priest, Rev. Edmond Makovsky, and Limmud FSU co-founder Chaim Chesler. Schudrich said: “Today in this moving ceremony in Plonsk, we have witnessed the true Poland, and the reverse side of the true relations between Poland and Israel. “A quiet and dignified procession, its face turned toward peace and brotherhood, with no counter- demonstrations and without strain and tension. It is not at all clear that such an event could have taken place today in Paris, Stockholm or London.”

Poll: Brits back Israel Britons are nearly twice as likely to back UK support for Israel as oppose it, new research for the Jewish News has shown, writes Justin Cohen. As the Jewish state celebrates its 70th anniversary, attitudes towards bilateral relations are revealed in a ComRes poll of 2,039 adults. It shows a considerable percentage of respondents not ready to express an opinion on a range of issues about Israel. But while 43 percent said they ‘don’t know if Britain should continue its support for Israel as a valuable ally’, 62 of those expressing a view agreed compared to 38 percent who disagreed. After removing the ‘don’t knows’, 56 percent say Britain and Israel are natural allies and 67 percent believe Israel has contributed to the world a significant proportion of scientific and technical advances. Of the latter, 85 percent aged over 65 agreed, compared to 56 percent of 18 to 34-year-olds. Just five percent of those surveyed said they had visited the country, while one-in-four

Britons were interested in going for the first time, with young people most likely to want to make the journey. Overall, more than 70 percent said they had no interest in going. ComRes chair Andrew Hawkins said: “Although only one-in-20 Britons have ever visited, there is clearly a substantial degree of warmth towards Israel and widespread recognition of its contribution to the world. “The number of people who don’t know enough to express an opinion towards Israel is high, showing that more needs to be done to explain Israel’s importance to Britain. “But the proportion expressing a positive opinion outnumber those taking a negative view by around two to one. “Older people especially are more positive; of those able to express a view, the overwhelming sentiment is appreciative of Israel as an ally to Britain and a major contributor to the world.” The poll was conducted before the Great Return March on the Gaza border.

The declaration, hand delivered this week to Israeli President Reuven Rivlin, was initiated by the World Jewish Congress (WJC), which says it has “immense pride and admiration for Israel’s remarkable and inspiring achievements over the past seven decades”. It offers “steadfast and unwavering support for Israel as the nation state of the Jewish people and its centrality to the Jewish people”. WJC president Ronald Lauder said: “This manifesto is

a declaration of our promise to continue to defend and promote the Jewish state, and to stand by and assist in ensuring its bright and secure future.” Rivlin told the delegation that presented the declaration – styled following the format of the 1948 Declaration of Independence – “At the root of our relationship as the Jewish people there is one absolute understanding that must prevail: our mutual responsibility for one another; our commitment to the security, liberty, and welfare of every member of our people. This commitment must be stronger than any disagreement.”

A Westminster shiva Dame Margaret Hodge summed up the feelings of many Jews and their ambivalent relationship with the Labour Party: “I feel an outsider in the party I have been a member of for 50 years.” Her speech, like almost every contribution to Tuesday’s extraordinary three-hour debate on anti-Semitism, was heard in most parts of the Chamber in respectful silence, as non-Jews absorbed the full horror of Jewish race hatred in 2018 – an issue with which Jews are sadly all too familiar. But among the most powerful contributors were great friends of the community – John Mann, Ian Austin, Joan Ryan, Wes Streeting – even Priti Patel, who has had more cause than most to suffer from anti-Semitic/anti-Zionist backlash. It was heartening, too, to hear the frequent words of praise for the CST and its sterling work in keeping the community safe as well as documenting the almost endless anti-Semitic material levelled at Jewish MPs. Nevertheless, we can only wonder at the speech made by the woman who expects to be home secretary in a future Labour government. Diane Abbott’s track record is truly lamentable and she did not disappoint on this occasion, choosing to speak about Charedi schools in her constituency and poor Ofsted reports, rather than address the burning issue of the day. And, like those who sit shiva and always note those who did not come to visit, we are obliged to ask – just where was former Labour leader Ed Miliband? If he is not embarrassed at the poisonous legacy so avidly deployed by his successor, he should be.

Where would we be? We weren’t that many to start with. Just 16.6 million Jews walked the earth in 1939. Just over 10 million of us were left a few years later. Thankfully we’re recovering, after the Nazis sought to reduce our number to zero. But still today, 70 years on, we are still nowhere near that 16.6 million. There are 14.5 million of us, according to Israeli government stats. The last century has seen us go from ‘not a lot’ to ‘even less’. Where would that number be without Israel? Few of us dare seriously to contemplate it. The recovery of a people in all their glory after sustained industrial slaughter was only made possible with the founding of the state. Unlike most 70-year-olds, Israel is not sat on a cruise ship playing bridge. She is stuck in an unfriendly neighbourhood, continuously on the lookout for dangers and threats, as she carves out a living and a life. Happy birthday!

Israel is part of the West. I think Corbyn’s world view is that he divides people into oppressors and victims. There are victims and oppressors in the world but Corbyn seems to have taken this approach to a greater level than necessary. Some of the Left would see Jewish people as oppressors, and I think some on the Left think that Jewish people can ‘only redeem themselves’ if they go against perceived Jewish conservatism. The message from Corbyn is that Jewish people have to reject aspects of their perceived identity and culture to be acceptable. Other cultures are not expected to do this. Common ground for Jews and the Commonwealth ZAKI COOPER

f anyone deserves a rest this Shabbat, it’s the Queen – especially as it’s her birthday. The week has been busy. She hosted a big Commonwealth Summit (or CHOGM in the jargon) consisting of 53 heads of government. But what does the Commonwealth mean for us Jews? The Commonwealth is a club of 53 countries, most former parts of the British Empire. Since the Brexit vote, some people argue it is increasingly important for the UK’s future. The significance of the Commonwealth for the Jewish community operates on four levels. First, there are vibrant Jewish communities in several Commonwealth countries, the largest in Canada, with almost 400,000 Jews and the UK, with around 300,000. Australia has more than 100,000, South Africa about 70,000 and New Zealand up to 7,000. Of the top 10 Jewish populations in the Diaspora, four are in Commonwealth countries.

Countries in the east like Singapore and India, with dynamic, fast-growing economies, have also attracted a transient community. Even in the 53 countries without much of a Jewish community, many will have a Chabad centre. Visiting Sri Lanka 10 years ago, my wife and I met the Chabad rabbinic couple there. To see Orthodox Jews in the middle of sweltering Colombo was incongruous to say the least. Second, there are interesting links between Jews worldwide and Commonwealth countries. They can be rooted in family ties, or based on current commercial interests or charitable activity. The development charity Tzedek for example has operated in India and Ghana for years, as has the Chief Rabbi’s Ben Azzai socialaction programme. Third, several Commonwealth countries have amazing history. My ancestors came to Calcutta from the late 18th century onwards. Elsewhere in India, Jews came to Cochin in the late Middle Ages, while the largest community was always in Mumbai. The story in the Purim Megillah, which takes place around 350 BCE, mentions ‘Hodu’ – India.

EVEN IN COUNTRIES WITHOUT MUCH OF A JEWISH COMMUNITY, MANY WILL HAVE A CHABAD CENTRE Other Commonwealth countries have beautiful synagogues, including the Maghain Aboth, built in 1878 in Singapore, another in Barbados originally built in 1654 and, amazingly, even one dating from 1926 in Mozambique. Fourth and finally, many of the 53 Commonwealth states have strong relations with Israel. Intriguingly, in the vote in 1947 for Israel’s existence, when the UK famously abstained, five Commonwealth countries voted in favour – Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the Dominican Republic. India and Pakistan voted against , though this was a couple of

years before the Commonwealth formally came into existence with the London Declaration. Nowadays, Israel enjoys particularly strong relations with the likes of India (Netanyahu and Modi have exchanged state visits in the past nine months); Singapore, where there is strong cooperation on security, and a number of African states. Bibi visited Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda, three key Commonwealth states in Africa, in June 2016. A year later, he met ten leaders of west African states in Liberia. As Jews, we should be comfortable with many aspects of the Commonwealth. We are a diverse, multi-national people. Israel absorbed people from 103 countries speaking 82 languages. Jews have an eye on the past while living in the present, just as the Commonwealth encapsulates both tradition and modernity. Some have even suggested that Israel, as a former British territory (1918-1948), should try to join the Commonwealth. Stranger things have happened. When the Commonwealth meets for its next big summit in 2020, will the Israeli PM be lining up with British royalty and other heads of government?

Why I quit as head of my local Labour party EUAN PHILIPPS

ast July I was appointed chairman of my local constituency Labour Party. I felt proud to take on the role, my most senior position in five years of membership and a lifetime of Labour support and campaigning. Fast-forward to last week and I felt I had no choice but to step down. On Friday I resigned. What happened? The answer is the institutionalisation of anti-Semitism in the party. In March 2017, I and others established Labour Against Anti-Semitism, made up of current and former Labour members, both Jewish and non-Jewish, dissatisfied with the increasingly prominent discrimination against Jews within the party. Our objectives were to report anti-Semitic Labour members and to raise awareness of the issue. We believed providing overwhelming evidence of the racial hatred we

witnessed would spur the party to act. At our most recent count, we have reported 1,200 party members to Labour’s compliance team. Over the course of the year, anti-Semitism within the party membership has become normalised. Attendees of the party conference in Brighton last September reported an uncomfortable atmosphere where antiSemitic tropes were repeated and applauded. The meeting where Holocaust denial was discussed as an area of debate exemplified a party that had badly lost its way. In December, at a JLM event, Jeremy Corbyn promised that he was committed to zero tolerance of anti-Semitism in the Labour Party. He was loudly heckled as a liar. Our sense of optimism that change could come internally was dealt a serious blow in January when the hard Left took over Labour’s NEC, the body charged with overseeing party discipline, among other things. The sitting head of the Disputes Panel, Ann Black, was deposed and Christine Shawcroft, a supporter of Tony Greenstein

and Ken Livingstone, was appointed in her place – and was a disaster. She finally stood down after appearing to defend the Holocaust denier Alan Bull, who was standing as a Labour council candidate in Peterborough. Her mooted replacement, Claudia Webbe, has also defended Livingstone, most notably in 2005 when he accused a Jewish reporter of behaving like a concentration camp guard. The NEC appointed Jennie Formby of Unite as the new general secretary and she will now be tasked with a new anti-Semitism policy – despite having allegedly employed a Labour member suspended for anti-Semitism in 2017. Is Labour institutionally anti-Semitic? When you look at the NEC and apply the definition as given in the Macpherson Report (“The collective failure of an organisation to provide an appropriate and professional service to people because of their colour, culture or ethnic origin. It can be seen or detected in processes, attitudes and behaviour”), the use of the term is not hyperbolic. This is a body that is unable to deal with

the scale of the anti-Semitism around it, that is either unwilling or unable to act. I resigned because I could no longer pretend to myself the Labour Party was anything other than what it is, because I was sick of the lies and the empty rhetoric and the stench of racism – and I had to speak out. Although the situation worsens (we have a backlog of more than 1,000 members still to report) our group will not be bullied, we will not be silenced, and we will continue to scrutinise everything the party does. Enough is enough.

What is the Jewish state after 70 years? DR EINAT WILF

oday we celebrate Israel’s 70th birthday. Among all that has been written and said about Israel’s myriad successes and future challenges, what has been forgotten is what exactly we should be celebrating and why? In other words, what is the Jewish state after 70 years? There is no single, official all-encompassing definition of the ‘right’ way to be Jewish and the ‘wrong’ way to be Jewish. Herein lies the essence of the Jewish state: the ongoing debate about its very nature. And this has been the case ever since the days of the First Zionist Congress. Zionism and the state of Israel have always been sites of an ongoing and fierce debate about the very fundamental question of what it means to be the Jewish state. What makes Israel a democracy is necessity. Israel is a democracy not because it has a beautifully-written constitution that guar-

antees it. It doesn’t. Israel is a democracy not because its founding parents read John Locke or John Stuart Mill. They may have, but they also read Karl Marx and Leon Trotsky. Israel is a democracy because democracy was the only mechanism that was available to mediate and settle the fierce debates about what it meant to be the Jewish state. Having spent more than 50 years fiercely debating the Zionist project, it was logical, if not very natural, to extend the debate to those groups who became citizens of the state of Israel, regardless of their views. The state of Israel became a fierce debate over what it means to be the Jewish state, with the debate conducted now not only among Zionist Jews, but expanded to include the views of anti-Zionist Arabs and antiZionist Charedi Jews. The elected parliament of Israel became a place where those who argued against the very existence of the state, or at the very least made it clear that they could very well do without it, were represented: something which does not exist in any other parliament

in the world. Seventy years after declaring independence, Israel is (by one reckoning) the world’s tenth oldest continuous democracy. It had universal suffrage from its first day – yes, Arab citizens too, and it has continued to operate without military coups, civil wars, or suspension of elections to this day, surviving even the assassination of a prime minister. Its first Parliament sat in 1949 and was empowered by an electorate of all its adult citizens, counted equally. Israel is one of only 20 or so countries (out of 200) that has been rated free by Freedom House in each of its annual reports since the organisation

started keeping track of democracy around the world nearly half a century ago. It is precisely this stunning achievement in such difficult conditions that makes Israel’s quite imperfect – necessarily imperfect – democracy such a fascinating topic. Anyone interested in democracy as such should be very interested in studying Israel, even if they have no interest in the specific Israeli story, Judaism, Zionism, or the conflict. Israel is a democracy, but not everyone who participates in the democratic system is a democrat. In fact, many have decidedly undemocratic and certainly illiberal visions for the state and the society. But since none of the non-democratic and illiberal forces within Israel are capable of imposing their will – as much as they may be very loud – Israel’s democracy remains vibrant. Israel can boast of numerous other achievements in high-tech, agriculture and medicine, but perhaps none compares to sustaining 70 years of fierce debate. And as we look to the future, the fact each of us has the feeling that there are still ‘not enough of me and way too much of them’, means that we can all agree on one thing – given how each one of us fears that ‘the others’ might take over, it’s far better the debate continues, rather than it be settled.  A longer version of this piece can be read in the new issue of BICOM’s Fathom magazine

It is relevant for today because, once again, we see children fleeing. In 1938-1939, support was organised, now there is antagonism and bureaucracy. When her husband was sent to Auschwitz in 1944, Ilse voluntarily transferred to the camp with their young son to keep the family together. She and her little boy were gassed on arrival. Ilse’s song was never written or recorded. It stayed alive in Aviva’s mind. On Sunday, aged 85, she sung it in public, in front of 3,000 people, for the very first time. Eyewitnesses recount he was recognised on arrival and forced to perform at gunpoint before being led to the gas chambers alongside many of his fellow Westerbork “celebrities”. He was 51. Francesco has so far made 20 trips around the world to revive the music of the camps. He plans to make 80 more by 2020, before holding a concert in Auschwitz to mark the

75th anniversary of liberation. There were seven orchestras in Auschwitz. Each played hundreds, if not thousands, of songs. He has a busy two years ahead. “I would like this concert and future ones to show what was lost can be rebuilt and celebrated,” he reflects the morning after the concert. Hearing children perform the songs of the camps gives them a connection to the past. Now the music belongs to them. Handing it to them feels like a mitzvah. This can be a new beginning.”

Giving children a brighter tomorrow

Judy Elkus speaks to Moshe Dolev of Israel-based charity Hamifal, which provides care for at risk and homeless children

very child deserves a safe, warm home where their physical and emotional needs are met. But what happens when a child’s parents cannot, or will not, look after them? When the child suffers neglect, abuse or abandonment? For children like these, Hamifal is there to help. Founded in 1943 by the late Recha Freier, Hamifal is a national organisation in Israel that cares for children at risk, rehabilitating and educating them through a combination of social programmes, therapeutic and educational projects and healthcare. Today, Hamifal has 16 facilities across Israel, including 11 dedicated Children’s Villages, five family group homes and three after-school care centres. “When children come to us, they leave behind parents who may be alcoholics, criminals or drug addicts,” says Moshe Dolev, director general of Hamifal. “They have suffered from deficient parenting, violence, neglect or rejection, or even sexual abuse, as a result of which they may lack basic trust, have low self-image and be at risk of dropping out of school, poor language development, aggression

and anger and, in extreme cases, suicide. “But, we get through to them and set them back on track.” Key to the Hamifal approach is what the charity describes as the educational family model, whereby children live in a family group setting, enabling them to experience the positive childhood and nurturing environment they lacked at home. Twelve children live together as siblings, with a foster couple and their biological children living in an adjacent apartment. They share communal areas, daily

chores and a routine lifestyle. A tailor-made care plan is created for each child by a professional team of psychologists, social workers, therapists and special education teachers and instructors, together with the foster couple. Wherever possible, contact is encouraged with the biological parents, who are also offered counselling to help them cope better. “Our goal is to educate and rehabilitate children at risk, helping them to reach their potential and grow into independent, empowered adults,” says Moshe. “We see outstanding results from our care and therapeutic programmes – the vast majority of our

Newlyweds Rachel and Dovi Soffer discover Tuscany’s natural hot springs, charming medieval towns and breath-taking views

s we passed a glorious landscape of mountains, valleys and Cypress trees, on the never-ending, winding roads of southern Tuscany, we knew our honeymoon destination would prove to be something special. And finally there it was, the Adler Thermae Hotel, nestled away in the quiet region of Val d’Orcia, a 10-minute walk from the small ancient town of Bagno Vignoni and a short drive from picturesque Pienza and Montepulciano. The 5-star hotel boasts around 90 rooms, although such is its layout that you never feel as if there are more than a handful of other guests. Our room was spacious and boasted stunning views of the surrounding valleys and thermal pools. Each comes with a private balcony and a distinct sense of romance, luxury and relaxation. Guests are also well-catered for at the beautiful terrace by the bar, where every afternoon there is a fresh fruit buffet and some of the best Italian coffee we have ever tasted, while the hotel’s restaurant provides a sumptuous buffet breakfast and expertly-prepared dinner. The chef was also more than happy to accommodate our strictly-kosher diet. We spent our first day enjoying the

perfectly-maintained grounds, walking around the tiny medieval village of Bagno Vignoni, where the natural hot springs were discovered as far back as Roman times. Adler Thermae also offers its own menu of spa treatments, and we booked ourselves into the Honeymoon Special Oriental, an indulgent couples’ treatment lasting 100 minutes. Following a full body exfoliation, mini facial and relaxing massage, we left the treatment room feeling like every stress had disappeared. There are a variety of steam and sauna rooms for guests to enjoy, including the particularly impressive panoramic Finnish sauna, as well as the brine steam bath and herbal caldarium. We also enjoyed the relaxation rooms and healing waters of the thermal pools, naturally filtered through the mountains. For guests wanting to enjoy the region more extensively, the hotel is happy to organise an itinerary. We had the option to join group tours, although we chose to arrange our own private tour. There is also mountain bike and e-bike hire or racing cycle hire (€35 or £30 per day) available, as well as car rental for €50 (£43) per day. Our knowledgeable driver, Andrea, took us

first on a tour of quaint Italian towns, including beautiful Pienza, a UNESCO world heritage site, as well as nearby Montepulciano and Montalcino. The former charmed us with its medieval houses, palaces and winding streets, while Montalcino exudes a peaceful charm and boasts breath-taking views of Tuscany. We visited the charming village of San Quirico d’Orcia and, on the way there, marvelled at the ancient architecture of the Abbey of Sant’Antimo. Around an hour’s drive away lies the magnificent medieval city of Siena, famed for its art, museums and the Palio, a horse race held twice a year. Visitors can still see the remnants of Siena’s Jewish ghetto, where a substantial community once flourished, while the 18th century synagogue inVia delle Scotte is still used today. Just outside Siena, wine enthusiasts might also want to pay a visit to Terra di Seta, one of only two kosher wineries in Tuscany, alongside the recently-opened Cantina Giuliano, located in Casciana Alta. We even fitted in a visit to Mulino Val

d’Orcia, a family-run pasta maker, who grow all of their own wheat and spelt on six acres of land. We watched as they transformed this raw ingredient into all types of pasta, including Pici, a local speciality. There is something truly magical about Tuscany as you walk through the cobbled streets of its perfectly preserved villages, taking in its beauty, history and culture. Our trip was perfect for a honeymooning couple and we plan to come back again to this magnificent region.

BY RABBI ALEX CHAPPER We think of a newborn baby as sweet, pure and innocent. It seems incongruous to connect childbirth with impurity, yet this week’s sedrah states: “If a woman conceives and gives birth to a male, she shall be impure for seven days.” Why is this? The great 19th-century rabbi Shimshon Raphael Hirsch says for moral development we need the free-willed elevation of oneself beyond the bonds of impurity. In other words, we have to be conscious we are much more than just physical beings, destined as much to die as we were to be born. Our souls crave to transcend the limits of this world and approach the divine, while having the capacity to make free choices about our behaviour. When we lose sight of this truth and focus on our corporeal existence and earthly preoccupations, we become shackled by the confines of our environment and mired in a spiritual myopia that is termed as impurity. The act of childbirth, so obviously by its very nature a physiological process, causes a person to focus on life’s physical aspect, its cyclical nature and our own mortality, thereby rendering us temporarily ‘impure’. Ethics of the Fathers says you are formed, born, live, die, and are destined to give a judgement and accounting before the King of kings against our will. Only these are beyond our control, but all else, especially the choices we make in life, we are free to choose. Rav Hirsch says this is the definition of purity and its opposite occurs when we defocus from that truth.

Read on Shavuot, the Book of Ruth tells the story of two Moabite princesses who marry into Elimelech’s family after the latter abandons his native land at a time of acute famine and moves to the more fertile soils of the Moabite plains in the Transjordan. of Boaz and is therefore also a member of the Judean landed gentry. However, with the passage of time, his family suffers a series of calamities and Ruth, together with her sister-in-law and mother-in-law, is forced to return to the land of Israel as a destitute widow. Boaz is described as a virtuous and pious man, and it was his decision to introduce the custom of greeting people using God’s name. Quite unlike his uncle’s shortsighted selfishness, Boaz is portrayed as a man of largesse, warmly welcoming his impoverished brethren to glean in

his expansive estate. Beyond this, Boaz would personally oversee the harvest to ensure that the poor received their due. It is in this context he first meets Ruth, a woman who has been doubly ostracised – singled out for her Moabite heritage as well as for her links to Elimelech’s household. Their marriage, however, proves to be tragically short-lived, as Boaz dies not long after their wedding. And yet, the resounding message that lingers long after his passing is the circumstance in which they first met. Leviticus 19 insists that the Jewish model of charity is not to keep the lower classes at arm’s length, but rather to encourage the poor to enter the property of the upper classes and spend time gathering from the harvest. The story of Boaz is so much more than a biblical romance: it reminds us of the need to break down social barriers and permanently shatter the cycle of poverty.

How should Progressive Jews celebrate Israel at 70?

A donkey that talks! RABBI LEAH JORDAN The Torah is full of fantastical moments – the parting of the Red Sea, a bush that burns but is not consumed, the signs and wonders we read about every year at Pesach. One of its most supernatural moments is when the donkey of non-Israelite prophet Balaam opens its mouth and complains to Balaam about his abusive treatment. What are we to make of this Alice In Wonderland moment, a talking, moralising donkey in the heart of the story? In Pirkei Avot, the very oft-quoted Ethics of the Fathers, we’re told: “Ten things were created on the eve of the Sabbath in the twilight,” that mystical, liminal time when God had finished doing all of the work of creation, and the first Shabbat was about to begin. Pirkei Avot goes on to tell us that, at this magical moment, 10 things that would later be very important for the history of the Jewish people came into being.

Among them is the well with which Miriam would sustain the Jewish people in the desert (and the manna too), the rainbow God paints in the sky for Noah after the flood, the rod Moses would need to part the Red Sea, the tablets of the Covenant themselves and even “the mouth of the female donkey” that would later speak to Balaam. This is the rabbinic way of acknowledging how important all these sorts of supernatural moments would later be in our central stories… and a way of acknowledging how outside regular physics they would all be as well. They are so fantastical, the Midrash here is telling us, that they could only come into being at this magical, twilight time. So while we may find Balaam’s donkey fantastical, so too does the Jewish tradition itself.  Rabbi Leah Jordan is Liberal Judaism’s student chaplain

BY RABBI NEIL JANES Honi, a first century sage, famously fell asleep for 70 years. Waking, he found the trees he had planted were now fully grown, but he was not recognised by his descendants or disciples. The Babylonian Talmud uses this story to understand the verse from Psalm 126: “When the Eternal one brought back those that returned to Zion, we were like dreamers.” Honi wondered how the exiled slept for 70 years, from the destruction of the first Temple to their return to the land. Just a few miles from Honi’s grave is the ancient village of Korazim, where, 70 years after the foundation of the state of Israel, Rabbi Gilad Kariv, head of the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism, also invoked this verse from psalms. A full congregation of the Rosh Pinah Reform Community sat in the ruins of the fourth century synagogue at Korazim in early spring. There was

standing room only as Rabbi Tlalit Shavit and musicians led us in the most uplifting Shabbat service. Jews from all around the world, including West London Synagogue members, brought prayer and life to a shul that perhaps was last used more than 1,600 years ago. Rabbi Kariv noted this was a cause for celebration. A woman rabbi, a state of Israel, a Jewish world that, with the exception of the fundamentalists, has embraced the opportunities of the 21st century,

confidently looking beyond itself. Israel still faces challenges of existential importance: the question of religious pluralism, how to fulfil the Jewish value of “do not oppress the stranger” in its treatment of asylum seekers and its relationship between peoples, economic inequality and scrupulous political leadership, working for peace with its neighbours, building a shared society inside its borders, seeking peace with Palestinians and an end to the occupation. The celebration is that, in spite of tremendous obstacles, we have achieved so much and still have faith. It is not a dream. So many of my friends and colleagues are at the forefront of continuing to build Herzl’s dream of a democratic, Jewish state. Stephen Dear Stephen I see from your letter that there are three families on your group and, since a company scheme only requires two employees, this may be a consideration. Ending the group scheme is simple enough, although there are implications. First, discounts are applied by the insurer, which may not be otherwise available on single or family policies. Second, each member effectively begins a new policy, and so your insurer

company (the list is not exhaustive): •Register a unique company name with Companies House •Generate a memorandum of articles and association •Set up a company bank account •Tell HMRC at the earliest opportunity that you’ve stopped, or when you intend to stop, working as a sole trader or partnership •Register with HMRC to pay corporation tax •Review what expenses and allowances may be deductible by your company •As a limited company director, you must keep accurate records for paying corporation tax •Notify your customers and suppliers of the change •Decide with us on a tax efficient remuneration/dividends package There is a lot to think about when forming a limited company and we would very happy to provide tailored advice for your business.

Hendon head over heels with title win MSFL Hendon clinched the Premier Division title after beating nearest rivals Oakwood A. The desire, commitment and effort of today’s performance epitomised our season. Relentless in trying to win game after game, it’s great for the team that we’ve managed to bring

We now prepare ourselves for the Cyril Anekstein final in two weeks’ time, where we know Oakwood will be as fired up as ever and they’ll want to ensure we don’t do the double this year. Runners set to raise more than £50,000 LONDON MARATHON

Some of the fittest members of the community will be out in force on Sunday when they compete in the London Marathon to raise vital funds for charity. Michele Lob (pictured right) has so far raised more than £12,000 for Jami, a charity close to her heart. Choosing to run for the mental health service for the Jewish and wider community, she said: “To coincide with my 60th birthday year I’ve decided to run my first marathon. Not just to prove to myself I can do it, but to raise money, and awareness for a cause, which personal to my family, often goes unnoticed.” Sponsor Michele at: https:// uk.virginmoneygiving.com/MicheleLobl Rom Korczak is one one of six runners who will be taking part for Kisharon, with him already raising more than £10,000 in what is his first fundraiser for the charity. Dan Brazil and Sarah Tarzi will both be competing in their first race, alongside Claire Gothelf, while Flora Frank will enter under the Norwood banner, but also donate to Emunah. Micah Smith will be raising money for the Friends of the Bereaved Families Forum, a UK charity supporting reconciliation projects in Israel and Palestine, spearheaded by bereaved families on both sides of the conflict. He said: “I’m thrilled to be raising money and awareness for the Friends of the Bereaved Families Forum.” Nightingale Hammerson has ten runners, including 65-year-old John Doyle, who has run nearly 40 marathons, but his first since 2010 and for Nightingale Hammerson.
