The JCC Network and What It Means for Us Nammie Ichilov Federation President & CEO

L

ast month, we shared the news: the Nina Iser Jewish Cultural Center is formally adopting the Nina Iser JCC designation when abbreviated. Nothing structural is changing. The programs, the people, and the mission are exactly as you know them.

This month, we want to talk about what that name unlocks, and why we believe our greatest seasons are ahead.

By embracing the JCC brand, we formally join an international network of Jewish community institutions, a powerful infrastructure built on decades of collaborative programming, shared resources, and collective ambition.

What does that mean in practice?

Access to foundation and program grants specifically designated for JCC affiliates. Professional development for our staff. National partnerships with organizations pioneering extraordinary initiatives across the globe. And the ability to learn from and connect with cultural and community centers doing remarkable work in communities across the United States, Israel, and the rest of the world.

The possibilities this affiliation opens are genuinely exciting. Think visiting artist residencies that bring even more Jewish creatives directly into our community. Think immersive Jewish heritage experiences. Think digital platforms that extend our programming reach beyond Southwest Florida.

And think about our Jewish teens representing Greater Naples in the annual JCC Maccabiah Games.

Q&A What does "joining the JCC network" actually mean day-to-day?

In the near term, it means our staff will have access to professional development and peer learning with JCC professionals nationwide, and our leadership can apply for grants and partnerships previously unavailable to us. It also means that when new Jewish residents arrive to Greater Naples and ask, "Where's the JCC?" there's now an immediate, recognizable answer.

Will membership or programming fees change?

There are no changes to fees or membership structures associated with this transition. Our programs remain accessible and our community commitment unchanged.

These are aspirations, not announcements. But they are real possibilities that our new designation makes newly accessible, and our community's interest, participation, and ideas will determine which doors we walk through first.

As we step into this expanded identity, you will also begin to hear a new phrase: Jewish Federation Family of Agencies. This reflects something that has always been true. The Jewish Federation, the Nina Iser JCC, the Jewish Community Relations Council, and our other programmatic entities do not simply share an address, they share a mission, a culture, and a collective heartbeat. No structures are changing.

What is changing is the language we use to make that unity more visible. Here in Naples, we don't just coexist, we are stronger because we are together.

Does the name Family of Agencies represent a reorganization?

Not at all. The Jewish Federation, the Nina Iser JCC, the Jewish Community Relations Council, and our programming components as well as MCA and WCA have always operated collaboratively under one roof. "Family of Agencies" is language, not a restructuring, a way of helping our Greater Naples community and the wider community understand the depth of integration that already exists.

Think of it as giving the name to something you've felt all along.

How can I get involved in shaping what comes next?

Reach out directly at ceo@jewishnaples.org with your ideas, your history with JCCs elsewhere, and your vision for what Naples can become. We are also building volunteer and advisory opportunities for community members who want a hands-on role in our next chapter. Stay tuned for announcements as we move into the new season.

ach fall, the shofar calls us back to ourselves. Rosh Hashanah doesn't ask us to look outward for answers, rather, it asks us to look inward: at how we've lived, whether our actions matched our values, and where we can grow. That spirit of honest reflection and quiet gratitude is exactly what I feel as I look back on this summer at your Jewish Federation of Greater Naples.

Our Board of Trustees and professional staff have spent these past few months preparing for a season that will continue to build on the wonderful growth and success we have enjoyed these last few years. You'll be greeted at the Nina Iser Jewish Cultural Center by a team ready to carry forward the standard of excellence you've come to expect. With both returning and new

members, please introduce yourselves to one another and do your part to help everyone feel at home. That warmth is community in action.

We've also invested in the spaces where we gather. A new shade structure, made possible by the generosity of several dedicated families along with WCA and MCA, is under construction and will be ready for season, giving us a comfortable outdoor space for programs and informal gatherings. After receiving generous state funds for improving our safety and security on campus, we're moving forward on the installation of a generator to keep our building running through power outages, along with important and timely security upgrades; investments that let us focus on what matters: you and this community.

JFGN 2026 Cultural Mission to Poland and Budapest Looking back: A journey of memory, meaning, and community

M

ore than 40 members of Jewish Federation of Greater Naples recently returned from a transformative two-week journey through Warsaw, Krakow, and Budapest; a mission that proved to be far more than a trip. It was an act of collective remembrance, a celebration of resilience, and a powerful affirmation of Jewish continuity across generations and continents.

"Being in these places with friends, saying Kaddish in Wegrow and Kielce, connected me to the horrors of the past in ways a museum never could.”

Debbie Dopelt reflected. “Today, I have a deeper appreciation for the survivors and those supporting Jewish communities in these countries."

The mission's most powerful moments emerged organically, blending structured experience with spontaneous community. On the evening before Shabbat, the entire group gathered at their Krakow hotel for an impromptu pre-Shabbat celebration. As blessings were recited in Hebrew by Myron Jacobs, the camaraderie and reverence in the room transcended words.

That sacred moment preceded a

Budapest, encounters with contemporary Jewish communities in Krakow, and walks through neighborhoods tracing centuries of Jewish history in Warsaw provided context for both loss and restoration. The group's engagement with local JCCs and community leaders reinforced the Jewish Federation's commitment to supporting Jewish life worldwide.

Standing united, both in memory and in hope, in front of the Main Memorial in Treblinka, a towering, granite block resembling the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. shared Shabbat dinner in Krakow alongside over 600 other Jewish visitors participating in a variety of Ride For the Living activities, in which Ron Filler biked 60 miles from Auschwitz to the Krakow JCC, a reminder of the global Jewish family and our interconnected heritage.

But perhaps the most moving experience occurred at Treblinka, the site of unimaginable loss. There, our group encountered a mechina group (an enlisted group of recent Israeli high school graduates preparing for their IDF service). In that solemn space, two worlds collided: young and old, Israel and the Diaspora, Hebrew

and English. Together, we created a single ceremony of remembrance, voices blending across generations, languages, and geographies.

“That moment at Treblinka will stay with me forever," Tamra Segal shared, "watching Israeli youth honor the same memory we were honoring. It was then that we spontaneously formed one circle, singing Hatikvah together; generations united in remembrance and celebration of Jewish resilience."

Throughout the journey, travelers also experienced the vibrant renewal of Jewish life across the region. Visits to the Dohány Street Synagogue in

The Heart Behind the Milli Young Leader Enrichment Fund Leaving a legacy

nlike many recent transplants, Milli has called Florida home since 1994. Most of those years have been spent in Naples, with a decade-long stint in Delray Beach.

What drew her back? “I missed my friends and the lifestyle in Naples,” she says. “I’m more of a sunset person than a sunrise person.”

her many trips to Israel, particularly memorable was with the National Conference of Christians and Jews, which deepened her appreciation for the country's cultural and religious diversity. synagogue. Community leadership was a way of life in their home. Following in their footsteps, Milli served on the boards of Jewish Family Services in both Kansas City and Naples.

Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, Milli developed an early passion for the arts. She earned a degree in photography from the Kansas City Art Institute and later studied environmental design at Parsons School of Design in New York City. During her time in New York, she had the memorable opportunity to hear Golda Meir speak at a fundraising event.

New Strategic Plan Is Underway You can contribute your views to this important initiative

I

n January 2017, the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples Board held a Board retreat to identify the critical issues facing our organization.

The plan included five imperatives to address the challenges identified as well as goals and tactics to work on during the ensuing five years: • Build strong and effective leadership • Create financial sustainability • Become the central address and voice of our Jewish community • Help create a vibrant Jewish population • Undertake a new physical presence We made incredible progress, including raising all the funds needed and building the Nina Iser Jewish Cultural Center, increasing our Annual Campaign by over 7% each year, taking a lead in security in collaboration with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office, and building a stronger, more diverse board of directors.

In 2022, we held another Board retreat to develop the current Strategic Plan (2022–2027), which included

the following key imperatives: • Ensure financial sustainability • Enhance programming, relevancy and engagement • Increase outreach, community awareness and visibility • Implement a comprehensive strategy for full utilization of the Nina Iser Jewish Cultural Center • Recruit, develop and engage effective and capable staff and volunteer leadership We continue to make strong progress, increasing our programming and seeing over 3,000 attendees a week at programs during season. We created a robust endowment, increased our Annual Campaign by approximately 10% annually, helped support the growth of MCA and WCA membership, enhanced the Jewish Book Festival and supported the evolution of the Jewish Film Festival.

We transitioned CEO leadership, increased the impact of ourJewish Community Relations Council, and enhanced security through our collaboration with

Secure Community Network, the official security organization of Jewish Federations of North America.

We feel incredibly proud of the vibrancy of our Jewish community and grateful for its support over the past decade.

But there is more to do, and we plan to take a more comprehensive approach in developing the key imperatives for our next strategic plan.

This next plan is being coordinated by our Strategic Plan Task Force including Mia Hyatt, Max Deifik, Steve Strome, Marc Saperstein, Nat Ritter and Nammie Ichilov. The new plan will be developed with more extensive input from our members, beneficiaries, MCA/WCA, major donors, and other key stakeholders in our community. The approach to the plan has been approved by our Board and includes an online survey, individual interviews and focus groups for the broader Jewish community.

We will be hiring a strategic planning consulting firm to assist us as we work to ensure candid feedback, credibility and transparency of our final plan.

We are seeking broad-based input from community members on what we are doing well, where we can improve, and, importantly, what the biggest challenges and opportunities are for our Jewish community as we look to the future.

The process will begin this fall with an online survey and continue through the remainder of 2026 with focus groups.

A Board retreat will be held in early 2027 to listen to the feedback and identify new key imperatives. Tactics and goals will be developed during the first four months of 2027 so that we will have a new Strategic Plan ready

by July 2027.

We look forward to wide community input from those engaged with us as well as from those who are not engaged. We encourage you, our JFGN members, to watch for communications on how you can contribute your views to this important initiative, and we especially hope you will not only participate, but encourage others to do so as well.

What a Summer It Has Been!

o you remember when we referred to the “lazy hazy days of summer?” Not anymore! This summer, the calendars of WCA’s Year Rounders (members who are full-time Florida residents) were almost as jam-packed as they are during season!

WCA summer programming once primarily consisted of events offered by the 10 WCA Summer Branches across North America. WCA held only two or three events in Naples for the approximately 300 members who, at that time, remained here.

Three years ago, WCA Membership Director Harriett Kleinman, a Year Rounder herself, recognized that

Women enjoyed a lovely luncheon at Pelican Isle Yacht Club, chaired by Toby Kosloff. many more members were staying in Florida year-round and suggested expanding summer programming.

She assembled a planning committee and, as they say, the rest is history. Each year, more women have joined the committee, and the number of summer programs has grown.

With approximately 40% of our membership (about 650 women) remaining in Florida this summer, WCA offered 22 events. “What

is especially exciting to me,” Harriett said, “is that many of the women planning the Year Rounder summer programs have not been involved in WCA in the past. Each year, I see new faces at planning committee meetings.”

Programs ranged from the successful “Get the Scoop on Summer” Kickoff in May to an October tour of Solomon’s Castle in Wauchula. Along the way, Year Rounders enjoyed luncheons, a fashion show,

Each time a player rolled a Bunco, she received a flower lei from event chair Barb Lefkowitz, Debbie Laites or Susan Pittelman. a sunset dinner, a progressive dinner, and even a dance party! Year Rounders also participated in a Game Day, in a Bunco game, and in several craft classes. Inspiring cooking class? Absolutely! There was an opportunity to attend a private shopping event, take a Line-Dancing class, and do Reformer Pilates. Volunteering at the Harry Chapin Food Bank was also an option for Year Rounder WCA members.

Nearly every program sold out, a clear indication that we are offering programs Year Rounders found exciting! Some programs were so popular they were offered twice.

Beading Buddies Spread Joy on Mother’s Day

embers of Beading Buddies recently shared kindness and creativity with the community by donating 700 handmade beaded necklaces to the Guadalupe Center in celebration of Mother’s Day. The colorful necklaces were created with care by volunteers and participants of Beading Buddies, a group dedicated to friendship, creativity, and community service through jewelry-making projects.

The necklaces were distributed to mothers and families served by Guadalupe Center, helping make Mother’s

Day extra special for many women in the community.

Organizers said the project was inspired by a desire to give something personal and heartfelt to local mothers. Each necklace represented appreciation, encouragement, and recognition for the important role mothers play in their families and neighborhoods. The necklaces brought smiles to many recipients and added a thoughtful touch to Mother’s Day celebrations The large donation effort required weeks of planning, bead sorting,

designing, and assembling. Volunteers worked together to create hundreds of unique pieces, turning simple materials into meaningful gifts. Representatives from Guadalupe Center expressed gratitude for the donation and the generosity shown by Beading Buddies.

Brazina Documentary Film Series A WCA/MCA tradition opens Nov. 3

n the spirit of Rosh Hashanah, the Brazina Documentary Film Series Committee* has been reviewing an impressive slate of documentaries — 35 and counting — to select the six films that will make up the 2026–27 season.

Now well into its second decade, the series has become one of Naples' signature cultural events,

drawing capacity crowds to Schiff Hall on the first Tuesday afternoon of every month.

The series was founded by educator Steve Brazina (z'l), who believed great documentaries should educate as well as entertain. When it began, the program — then simply called the Doc Film Series — attracted fewer than 40

The film tells the remarkable story of Bert Berns, a Bronx-born songwriter and producer whose name may be unfamiliar but whose music helped define the 1960s. Blending soul, pop, Tin Pan Alley, and even organized

ne of the biggest challenges of our time isn't a lack of information; it's an overload

of it.

Every day we're flooded with breaking news, viral posts, edited videos, memes, podcasts, AI-generated content, and anonymous social media musings. Some of it is fact-based journalism. Some of it is misleading. Some is intentionally deceptive. That’s why media literacy has become vital. The ability to evaluate sources, check facts, and distinguish reporting from opinion is no longer optional; it's necessary for every informed citizen.

On Sunday, Feb. 28, 2027, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Nina Iser JCC, our Jewish Community Relations Council’s 12th Annual Day of Learning will take a deep dive into the new media landscape Leading off, Joy Mayer, founder and executive director of the nonprofit Trusting News, will present “Media Malaise: Restoring Trust in News in the A.I. Age." Joining us from Sarasota, Mayer spent two decades in newsrooms and academia, including a dozen years as a faculty member at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. She now works with news organizations and communities across the country to help reconnect journalists with their readers, viewers, and listeners.

Local experts will also share their insights, including a long-time financial journalist, a former WINK News

director turned college professor, and a one-time “Mommy blogger” who has built a robust online audience as a post-Oct. 7 media watchdog and commentator focusing on antisemitism and anti-Zionist bias in news coverage.

When a grandchild is neurodivergent — whether they have autism, ADHD, learning differences, social communication challenges, or other developmental differences — grandparents often find themselves looking for information, guidance, and ways to provide the best possible support.

Connections, Conversation & Coffee was created to provide a welcoming space where grandparents can come together, share experiences, learn from one another, and build a supportive community.

This monthly group offers grandparents an opportunity to connect with others who understand the joys and challenges of supporting a neurodivergent grandchild. Through open conversations, guest speakers,

and shared resources, participants explore topics that matter most to families today.

F

ew stories in Jewish history are as inspiring as the story of Henrietta Szold, founder of Hadassah and Youth Aliyah. In 1933, as Nazism began to spread across Europe, a remarkable effort was launched to save Jewish children in danger. Henrietta Szold, already in her seventies, took on the enormous responsibility of leading Youth Aliyah and ensuring that these children would not only survive but would

also have a chance to build meaningful lives.

Henrietta Szold never had children of her own, but she became a mother figure to thousands. Her compassion and determination helped save a generation that might otherwise have been lost.

Today, through Hadassah’s continued support of youth villages in Israel, her

vision lives on, helping young people from diverse backgrounds overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.

Henrietta Szold’s legacy reminds us that one person with courage, vision, and compassion can truly change the world. Am Yisrael Chai!

he Holocaust Museum & Cohen Education Center has provided Holocaust education programs to area schools for many years. In this time of rising antisemitism, education is the strongest tool against hate.

The work these and other Southwest Florida educators do to inform the next generation about the importance of standing up to hate is critically important to our communities.

The program not only explored the Holocaust as a historical event, it provided a broader view of life in Poland before, during, and after the Holocaust. Among the areas visited were cities and towns where Jewish people had lived for hundreds of years.

A special moment for Mr. Feingold was a stop in Bilgoraj, where his ancestors lived. While his great-grandfather was able to come to the U.S., the other family members who remained in Bilgoraj during World War II were likely deported to Belzec and murdered.

He noted “Not only did I get to walk the same streets as two of my greatgrandfathers, but I got to see the final resting places for their aunts, uncles, cousins, and siblings. I now get to share my stories (and pictures) with my students, which means the world to me.”

Florida Community Relations Leaders Convene to Build Bridges, Fight Hate Alan Scher Zagier JCRC Director

A

s our Jewish Community Relations Council continues to build bridges locally, concurrent efforts to strengthen ties across the Sunshine State are gaining momentum.

In July, Florida-based JCRC directors and board chairs met in Tampa for the annual in-person convening of the Coalition of Florida Jewish Community Relations Councils.

The two-year-old coalition consists of Jewish community leaders from 14 Federations, including Miami, Boca Raton, Broward and Palm Beach counties, Sarasota, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Ocala, and Tallahassee.

The statewide coalition meets virtually twice monthly, sharing notes on local issues while also formulating goals and strategies for statewide action, including our annual Israel and Jewish Community

Advocacy Days at the Capitol (March 8-9, 2027).

Thanks to our generous hosts at the Tampa JCC and Federation, the daylong session at the Shanna and Bryan Glazer Jewish Community Center was packed with discussion, dialogue, fellowship, and framing.

Our priority issues remain: • Combating Jew-hatred and anti-Zionism • Advocating for Israel and the Jewish community • Building civic and community partnerships • Ensuring the safety and security of the Jewish people and our institutions As at the local level, our statewide engagement efforts focus on four pillars: • Elected leaders • Education • Interfaith/intergroup outreach • Civic partnerships Collectively, we shared successes and challenges, including how to build bridges across race, religion, and ethnicity, especially following the Oct. 7 terror attacks in Israel.

Coalition of Florida Jewish Community Relations Councils conference attendees We additionally engaged on issues ranging from how to combat rising antisemitism in K-12 classrooms to encroachment on the separation of church and state in government facilities.

Guest speaker Jeff Mendelsohn, associate vice president for advocacy and civic engagement with the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), shared insights into key federal legislative priorities, including the bipartisan Jewish American Security Act. The legislation would reform the National Security Grant Program, boost oversight of online platforms,

increase protection of vulnerable Jewish students, and strengthen collaboration among federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies.

Fellow guest speaker Ayellet Black, deputy consul general for Israel, provided a timely update on the latest political, social, and economic developments in the Jewish state.

At day’s end, the 20-plus participants returned to our home communities, energized over our renewed commitment to effective, consistent, and sustained public engagement across our peninsula, from Key West to the Panhandle and all points between.

T

his September is a month of numerous Jewish Holy Days.

Rosh Hashanah 5787 coincides with an historic commemoration, and Jewish Historical Society of Southwest Florida always marks this solemn occasion. On Sept. 11, 2001, our peace was overtaken by a mixture of shock, grief and despair.

How could we, many wondered, an impenetrable country far away from most of the world’s hot spots, find ourselves a target of such venomous hatred, so helpless in the days, weeks, months, years, when our enemies were planning the terror?

Search and recovery were immediately accompanied by many unanswerable questions. Then, in a despicable twist, almost the next thing was to blame the Jews. Of the nearly 3,000 victims, 190 confirmed Jewish deaths were generally ignored in favor of conspiracies of Jewish/Israeli control of the World Trade Center, which proliferated, becoming widespread by the end

of October, and has gathered a huge worldwide following ever since.

September 11 Conspiracies: 20 Years Later, a must-review report by Simon Wiesenthal Center/Ed Snider Social Action Institute, is probably the most comprehensive list of claims fueled by the never diminishing, newly renamed Jew hatred, aka same old antisemitism.

How easy it must be to always blame the Jews. The world has always done it, and it does not look like the new generation is spared. Numerous trials and tragedies befell Jews everywhere over the last five years, and with each, a new spiral of antisemitism climaxes as we all think it could not get any worse. But it does. I will only reference one – Oct. 7. Boy George’s new beautiful pro-Israel song, “We’ll Dance Again,” is the newest source of Jew hatred because he sings, “I stand with the Jews. I don’t feel brave, I just need to behave like a human.”

Sheltered in our cloistered Southwest Florida hub, we are pretty lucky and complacent in our innocence. But in honor of both Rosh Hashana and 9-11, we must set aside all our Jewish differences and idiosyncrasies and do just that — stand with the Jews and Israel, pray and sing together.

As one voice.

n a campaign season dominated by attack ads, misleading mailers and widespread voter disengagement, hundreds of community members flocked to the Nina Iser Jewish Cultural Center this summer to a Meet the Candidates event.

journey from Auschwitz-Birkenau to Kraków. The mission gave Federation participants the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Jewish history, honor the memory of those lost in the Holocaust, and witness the vibrant renewal of Jewish life in Poland today.

The annual Ride for the Living is a moving symbol of resilience, hope, and the continuity of Jewish life.

Alongside more than 300 participants from around the world, Ron helped raise nearly $1 million to support the Kraków JCC and its vital work, including assistance for more than 500,000 Ukrainian refugees, support for Holocaust survivors in the region, and programs that strengthen Jewish life throughout Poland.

The event began with a powerful message: “With our backs to Auschwitz, we ride into the future.” Adding to the emotion of the day, 97-year-old Holocaust survivor Bernard Offen a d d re s s e d p a rt i c i pants at the opening ceremony and then led the start of the ride by cycling the first 100 yards on a tandem bicycle.

or the children of Israel, it’s been a hot, dry trek through the desert. Things aren't going well and we know what that means. Trouble provides fertile ground for gossip to grow. This time it began with Miriam.

And this, our rabbis tell us, was Miriam's greatest sin. Not the nasty comment Miriam made about Tsiporah's background (bad as that was) but that she took a complaint about her brother and passed it on to someone else. According to both ancient and modern Jewish ethics, if you have a complaint against someone you speak directly to that person. Approaching someone else with that complaint is to commit the sin of Lashon Hara, and for this Miriam was punished.

But look what happens next. Moses prays for his big sister. He doesn't say, "Nu, so, Miriam, you get a nasty skin disease for not minding your own business." No. Instead Moses prays for Miriam because he understands what she's trying to do. Moses doesn't get defensive and think the worst of his sister. No. Moses thinks, "So, she didn't go about it the right way, but what the heck, maybe she was just trying to help." Moses takes some time out of his busy schedule and says "Dear God, please heal her."

E

very September we hear familiar expressions: a fresh start, turning over a new leaf, a new beginning. There is something hopeful about those words. They remind us that tomorrow does not have to look exactly like yesterday.

Rosh Hashanah certainly marks the beginning of a new year. But Judaism invites us to think about beginnings in a different way. The central spiritual work of these sacred days is called teshuvah. Although it is often translated as "repentance," the Hebrew word literally means ‘return.’ Return to what? Not to the past. We cannot relive yesterday. Rather, we are invited to return to our truest selves.

We return to the values that define us, the relationships that sustain us, and the divine image within us that life's disappointments, distractions, and mistakes can never erase. That is one of Judaism's most hopeful teachings.

That journey begins with reflection.

How have I treated those I love?

A

s the High Holidays approach, I feel the weight many of us have been carrying — worries about our community, the world, and our own inner lives. This has been a hard year. Yet these sacred days remind us that Judaism has always offered a path through uncertainty.

The Yamim Nora’im are not only days of awe; they are days of clarity, courage, and possibility.

The Shofar: Cutting Through the Noise

The Torah commands, “Yom teruah yihyeh lachem” (“It shall be a day of sounding the shofar for you” (Numbers 29:1)). The shofar is not meant for God; it is meant for us. Its cry is raw, unpolished, and impossible to ignore.

Maimonides famously wrote that the shofar calls out: “Awake, you sleepers, from your slumber!”

In a year filled with relentless noise — political, global, digital — the shofar is the one sound that cuts through it all. It wakes us up to what matters, reminding us of the Psalmist’s plea: “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

(Psalm 90:12).

Teshuvah: Returning to Our Best Selves

Teshuvah has always been Judaism’s quiet revolution. Hosea pleads, “Shuvah Yisrael, ad Adonai Elohecha”

(“Return, O Israel, to the Lord your God” (Hosea 14:2)). Return from fear, anger, and hopelessness. Return to the person you are meant to be.

Somewhere in the early 1940s, a cousin of the Archbishop of Canterbury asked Jerusalem novelist Sh’muEil Yosef Agnon (innocently, and perhaps a trifle smugly) whether Jewish religious tradition has any counterpart to, and any season as poetic and gloriously uplifting as, the Christian sacred season culminating in Easter. The question prompted Agnon (already a distinguished novelist and subsequently a Nobel Laureate) to begin work on his 1948 non-fiction opus Days of Awe,

This year, I imagine the Book of Life not as a heavenly ledger but as a collective one, written through our deeds, our commitments, and our willingness to show up for one another.

The Midrash teaches, “Open for Me a gate as small as the eye of a needle, and I will open for you gates wide enough for caravans” (Shir HaShirim Rabbah 5:2). Even the smallest step toward change can open vast new possibilities.

Yom Kippur: Honesty in a Time of Evasion

In a fractured world, teshuvah insists that repair is possible. Beginning again is possible. Despair is never the final word.

We confess in the plural — Ashamnu, bagadnu — because our moral lives are intertwined. The Talmud teaches,

The Book of Life: A Metaphor That Hits Hard

Each year we pray to be written in the Sefer HaChayim — the Book of Life. In calmer times, the image feels poetic. This year, it feels painfully real. Unetaneh Tokef confronts us with stark imagery — “Who shall live and who shall die… who by fire and who by water…” — not to frighten us, but to remind us how precious and unpredictable life is.

Yet the prayer ends with empowerment: “Teshuvah, Tefillah, and Tzedakah ma’avirin et ro’a ha’gezeirah.” (“Return, prayer, and acts of justice transform the severity of the decree.”)

given” (Pirkei Avot 3:15). The future is not fixed. Our choices matter.

Our compassion matters. Our courage matters.

That same period between Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur is summarized in our traditional sources as “The Ten Days

But whether we make the most of that one-month lead-in as part of a 40-day season of New Year resolutions is, once more, up to us.

As I constantly emphasize, Jewish tradition carries forward the spirit of fresh beginnings beyond those first 40 days of the New Year, to encompass five days of sukkah building; seven days of Sukkot; the

a sound — clear, courageous, unmistakable. Yom Kippur invites us to make that sound in our own lives. In a time of evasion, Yom Kippur teaches accountability. In a time of division, it teaches solidarity. In a time of fear, it teaches courage. And in a time of despair, it teaches that honesty is the first step toward hope.

Hope: Our Most Jewish Response

Despite their solemnity, the High Holidays are ultimately about hope. Not optimism; hope. Optimism assumes things will get better. Hope insists we can help make them better.

The Psalmist writes, “Kaveh el Adonai… v’yametz libecha” (“Hope in God… and strengthen your heart” (Psalm 27:14)). Hope is a discipline; a practice; a choice. And this year, we need it more than ever.

Rabbi Nachman of Breslov taught, “If you believe you can damage, believe you can repair.” That is the spiritual DNA of this season.

My Prayer for This Hard Year

May the shofar awaken us.

May teshuvah guide us.

May Yom Kippur humble us.

And may hope — stubborn, sacred hope — carry us forward.

May this be a year of healing, clarity, and renewed purpose. May we find strength in one another. And may the Days of Awe remind us that even in a hard year, hope is still ours.

Shanah Tovah U’metukah

jubilant climax of Sh’mini ‘Atzeret; and the joyous denouement of Simchat Torah, which sees us riding the wave of consecration and sanctity into the New Year. That represents 52 days of focused sacred purpose — a full one-seventh of the 52 weeks of the solar year dedicated to spirituality and uplift and higher purpose.

So this month, as Elul turns into Tishrei and the New Year 5787, the innocent enquiry we must pose ourselves is: are we going to be engaging with the richness of the soul-poetry of our prayerbook and the substance of Jewish communal life, to clarify our thinking and make possibly a creative and dynamic year enriched by our outpouring of brilliance, or are we just getting a seat in schule for two days, and showing up as passive observers to acquit a minimal Jewish obligation?

I don’t think that I need to emphasize: that’s all up to us.

T

s the High Holidays begin in September, many of us feel a familiar mixture of solemnity and possibility. New beginnings are not only marked by calendars and services; they are made real through reflection, renewal, and the quiet courage to start again. In this season, we pause to consider what shaped us over the past year — our hopes, our regrets, the moments we handled well, and the ones we wish we could redo.

This is a time for second chances, to reassess what it is that we really stand for. Our objective should be to embrace the good and discard the bad, to press our personal reset button to the end of improving ourselves in the new year by charting a better path forward.

We at Naples Jewish Congregation (NJC) will gather together at the High Holy Days in mid-September under the learned spiritual guidance of Rabbi Howard Herman, to ponder what we have done and not done over the past year to and for others, and to consider changes we can make to improve ourselves and our relationships with others.

Renewal begins with small choices.

It can be as simple as forgiving ourselves for being human or reaching out to someone we’ve been meaning to call. It can mean setting intentions that are practical and kind: to listen more deeply, to spend less time holding grudges, and to move our actions closer to our values. Renewal is about direction.

NJC High Holy Days 2025

The purpose of our inward examination is to gain greater self-awareness and insight into what drives us, both positive and negative. This focus on introspection, critical selfappraisal and repentance acknowledges our vulnerability and fosters accountability.

As Rabbi Herman will discuss in one of his High Holy Days sermons, “Missing Pieces,” all of us are incomplete; we are missing something that would make us whole. Part of our soul searching at the High Holy Days is to not only recognize, but also to try to “fill in” our missing pieces to be better than we are. Although our quest to better ourselves is a singular task, individual success can become infectious, leading to us being stronger together.

The High Holy Days afford opportunity for renewal and hope, the prospect for new beginnings and a chance for us to recommit to selfimprovement, leading to a brighter future for us, our congregation and our world. The High Holy Days evoke deeply personal and communal meaning for us. We will be in the sanctuary together as our NJC family in community, relying on one another for support and the strength to weather both our personal travails and our congregational challenges.

Second chances also carry a sacred weight. In every relationship and every community, we encounter moments that test trust. The High Holidays remind us that repair is possible. We can ask for understanding.

We can apologize without excuses.

We can demonstrate change.

Cherished traditions anchor us as we step into the unknown. Familiar prayers, meaningful meals, and stories passed from one generation to the next create continuity when life feels uncertain. Traditions preserve

Cheryl will collaborate with our volunteer choir, under the direction of our wonderful Music and Choir Director Alla Gorelik, who ably accompanies us as we lead our congregation in sacred song.

he essence of the Days of Awe, the 10 days encompassing Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, is embodied by the broad themes of reflection and redemption.

he High Holidays mean something different to each of us.

For some, they were the only days we attended services growing up. For others, they were a chance to gather with friends outside the Synagogue until we were called in.

Today, they have become a time of reflection, atonement, cleansing, spiritual enrichment, and setting intentions for the year ahead. Having a higher power in our lives can guide us not only during these holidays, but throughout the entire year.

As I’ve grown older, faith has taken on deeper meaning. Looking back on the past year — our accomplishments and our shortcomings — can be daunting. Yet, when we acknowledge our mistakes, atone for them, and commit to doing better, we learn and grow. I was once told that meditation is listening to God, while prayer is speaking to Him. The more I do both, the more peace I find.

Fasting becomes both a physical and spiritual cleansing. Atonement is

e have had weekly classes on Zoom to accommodate the many students who went home or traveled over the summer.

We have covered a fascinating mini course on the Jewish lifecycle from birth and bris through Jewish education, marriage, and even Jewish burial and the afterlife, as well as some exciting discussions about the lives and lessons of Jewish heroes from ancient times.

“I never knew how much went into Jewish education,” shared Jack, a junior who had only recently discovered his Jewish roots.

Summer has also been a great time for immersive Jewish experiences and learning retreats. We had students attending the Sun and Study Girls retreat in Utah, the Yeshiva Torah Ohr in Miami, the Sinai Scholars retreat, and

the ICC National Leadership Summit.

y name is Hannah Castro, and I am honored and excited to serve as the new Jewish Youth & Family Program Manager at Jewish Federation of Greater Naples. Having grown up in this community, it is incredibly meaningful to step into a role that allows me to give back to the place that has shaped my Jewish journey.

As a BBYO alum of our Naples chapter and a 7th-grade religious schoolteacher at Temple Shalom, I have had the privilege of learning, leading, and growing alongside many members of our community. From Temple Shalom, Beth Tikvah, Chabad, and beyond, I have been fortunate to find mentors, friends, and families

who nurtured my Jewish identity and inspired my love of Jewish life.

I am especially grateful for the warm welcome my family received 15 years ago and for the countless opportunities I have had to learn, serve, and connect.

In this role, my goal is to help every child, teen, and family feel that same sense of belonging. I am passionate about building relationships, empowering young leaders, and creating meaningful programs that reflect the warmth, vibrancy, and diversity of Jewish life in Naples.
