s we welcome 2026, our Greater Naples community is alive with energy. Seasonal residents have returned, reuniting with year-round neighbors. Our calendar brims with opportunities to gather, celebrate, and build the friendships that strengthen our Federation. There's something magical about a new year, the promise of fresh starts, new commitments, and endless possibilities.

Yet as Jews, we understand that moving forward doesn't mean leaving the past behind. Our strength lies in this beautiful tension: embracing tomorrow while staying deeply connected to yesterday. The traditions, history, and culture that have sustained our people for millennia aren't weights holding us back, they're wings lifting us forward.

This is why our cultural programming matters so profoundly. Through our WCA (Women’s Cultural Alliance) and MCA (Men’s Cultural Alliance), the Jewish Book Festival, Naples Jewish

Film Festival, and our summer mission to Poland and Israel, we're creating spaces where past and future meet, where ancient wisdom speaks to contemporary lives, and where community members find both meaning and joy.

Our Jewish Book Festival, now celebrating its eleventh year, exemplifies this balance perfectly. This season brings literary voices from across the Jewish world, from Mitch Albom's moving exploration of second chances to Amy Fish's true story of identity discovered decades after the Holocaust. These aren't just books; they're bridges connecting us to our shared narrative while illuminating what it means to be Jewish today.

When we fill rooms to hear these authors speak, we're participating in Judaism's millennia-old tradition of learning and dialogue, but we're doing so in ways that resonate with our lives right now.

Similarly, the 13th Annual Naples Jewish Film Festival offers another kind of opportunity to engage in Jewish cultural life. Beginning this month with powerful dramas and documentaries, the Film Festival brings Jewish and Israeli stories to life on screen. Film has an extraordinary ability to transport us across time and geography. We can witness the

devotion of a French mother in the 1960s, follow a contemporary Israeli's quest for family truth, or understand the Holocaust through documentary evidence. And then there's our extraordinary summer opportunity: our return to offering a community mission abroad, this year’s Greater Naples Cultural Mission to Poland and Israel. This two-week journey takes "remembering where we came from" quite literally. Walking through Warsaw's Jewish quarter and standing at Auschwitz-Birkenau, we confront the darkest chapter of our history. But the journey doesn't end there, it continues to Israel, where we volunteer, explore vibrant communities, and celebrate Shabbat in Tzfat. This arc from devastation to rebirth embodies Judaism's essential truth: we are a people who remember, who mourn, and who nevertheless choose life, growth, and renewal.

These cultural experiences do something remarkable: they transform individuals into community. The conversations sparked at a Book Festival discussion continue over coffee.

Film Festival attendees become friends who gather throughout the year. Mission participants return with bonds forged through shared, transformative experiences. Culture isn't just what we consume, it's the fabric weaving us together.

Building Community, Across Communities Alan Scher Zagier JCRC Director

F

or nearly 100 years, Jewish communities across the U.S. have relied on Jewish Community Relations Councils to serve as our collective public voice — from the perpetual battle against antisemitism to the civil rights movement’s fight for racial equality to protection of Jewish students on college campuses and advocacy for Israel in a post-10.7 world.

Here at home, our JCRC was formed in 2013 as the successor to a smaller, more narrowly focused community relations committee. A dozen years later, after joining Jewish Federation of Greater Naples over the summer as our first full-time JCRC director, I’ve quickly realized the value of learning the lessons of our forebears, as well as my more entrenched Jewish professionals and community relations colleagues.

Those lessons were in abundant display in late November in Washington, where scores of JCRC directors and professionals from points far and wide assembled for the annual Jewish Community Relations Council Directors’ Association meeting following the Jewish Federations of North America’s General Assembly.

Over two days, as a colleague noted, we engaged with leaders who pushed us to think boldly about the challenges and opportunities ahead. Keynote speaker Rear Admiral (Ret.) Daniel Hagari of the IDF set the tone with his reflections on Jewish leadership in times of crisis.

We explored coalition-building for the protection of democracy, examined JFNA’s strategic vision for the year ahead, and confronted the shifting global landscape with openness and clarity.

Subsequent sessions focused on crisis messaging, antisemitism emerging across new frontiers, and the complex dynamics of technology, gaming, labor, education and corporate environments.

We explored political polarization across the red-blue divide, to better understand how Jewish identity is being weaponized in public discourse and analyzed the way social media and grassroots activism are reshaping modern politics.

The session concluded with a secondday keynote from Ahmed F. Alkhatib, a Middle East scholar and native Gazan at The Atlantic Council who shared his commitment to thoughtful, principled dialogue and rejection of violence.

To be clear, Naples is not New York, Detroit or San Francisco, where the political, social, cultural and economic dynamics are far different than here in Southwest Florida. But as conference organizer Douglas Greene, JCRC director in Charlotte, North Carolina, wrote, our shared commitment to “sharpen the tools we need to lead our communities through turbulent times” unites our Jewish communities — large and small, liberal and conservative, urban, rural and suburban.

“Even though we come from different cities and contend with different challenges, we are rowing in the same direction. That kind of unity is not only rare; it is profoundly meaningful,” he shared.

Forging those connections is at the heart of our Jewish Community Relations Council, both within our vibrant community and across Greater Naples, and beyond. We invite you to join in those efforts, including two this month: • A January 26-27 trip to Tallahassee to advocate with our state’s elected leaders • The annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade in downtown Naples.

Things that Seem Too Good to Be True, Can Be Possible!

S

ometimes, things that seem too good to be true are really possible. For example, you can make a gift to Jewish Federation of Greater Naples and still receive income from your donated assets for the rest of your life — or let your children receive income after you’re gone.

A charitable remainder trust (CRT) is a special kind of trust allowed by tax law that lets you give to a charity while still benefiting yourself or your loved ones. You can move investments or other assets into the trust, keep earning income from them, and help a charity at the same time. You just need to follow certain rules.

There are two main types of CRTs: • Charitable remainder annuity trust (CRAT), which pays you or your chosen beneficiaries a fixed dollar amount each year; • Charitable remainder unitrust (CRUT), which pays a set percentage of the trust’s value each year (at least 5%), so the amount can change if the trust’s value goes up or down.

When the trust ends, whatever is left goes to the charity or charities you pick.

You can add more to a CRUT anytime, but not to a CRAT. You can set up a CRT while you’re alive or include it in your will.

Because a CRT is a charitable trust, it does not pay income taxes. However, the person receiving the income will pay taxes on what they get. If you give assets that have gone up in value, the trust won’t pay capital gains tax when it sells them, which is a big plus for donors with appreciated stocks.

The payments can last for a certain number of years (up to 20) or for the lifetime of the people you identify.

When you set up a CRT, you get a partial tax deduction based on how much is expected to go to charity after the trust ends. The charity’s share must be at least 10% of what you put in.

A CRT isn’t for everyone, but it can be a great choice if you want to give charitably, leave a legacy, and still receive income for yourself or someone else. There are other ways to give to charity, too, that aren’t mentioned here.

Meet Legacy Donors Dr. Paul Stein and Sharon Stein

P

aul and Sharon Stein are widely regarded as warm, generous members of their communities.

Sharon, originally from St. Louis, was deeply involved in BBYO during high school, an experience that shaped her Jewish identity. She credits her aunt Minnie, a philanthropic leader in St. Louis’s Jewish community, as an important influence.

Paul grew up in New York City, attending a Conservative synagogue and studying Hebrew at Stuyvesant High School. He moved to St. Louis for medical school, where he met Sharon. They raised their children, Mindee and Brad, in St. Louis. Paul, now retired, practiced Internal Medicine and Nephrology, and served for many years as Professor of Clinical Medicine at Washington University School of Medicine.

Shortly after marrying Paul, Sharon became active in civic, active in civic and Jewish organization, and in political campaigns.

She participated in the St. Louis Federation Young Women’s Council for Education, which trained future community leaders. Sharon served as a long-time board member — and at times President and Treasurer — of the Jewish Children’s Home, Inc. and the Family and Children’s Service. She also sat on various committees and joined the National Board of Jewish Family Service of North America, chaired a major conference, and contributed widely to Jewish communal life.

Both Paul and Sharon were involved for years in Congregation Shaare Emeth. They each assumed leadership positions on committees, the board and Sisterhood. Their engagement extended to Jewish Federation initiatives, including pilot programs, allocation panels, and fundraising.

commitment to the St. Louis Jewish community remained strong, they quickly embraced the vibrant Jewish life in Naples, particularly through the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples, where they contribute time and resources and have established a Lion of Judah Endowment.

Sharon & Paul Stein The Steins’ children attended the Alexander Muss High School in Israel, an eight-week summer study program that reinforced their Jewish commitment. Impressed by the program, Sharon joined the school’s National Board. Their daughter, Mindee Stein Fredman, lives in Cleveland and is Vice President of Legacy Giving at the Jewish Federation, and a proud Lion of Judah.

Mindee spent a semester in Israel during college, igniting a lifelong commitment to Israel and Judaism.

Brad, who lives in Austin, is also an active community leader and board member of Dell JCC. In 2002, the Steins discovered Fiddler’s Creek and Naples, Florida.

When Paul retired in 2015, they made Naples their permanent home. The move allowed them to immerse themselves in the local Jewish community, enjoying the area’s beaches, culture, and friendships. Relocating within Naples in 2023 enabled them to engage even more fully in communal life. While their roots and

Philanthropy, they say, has “had an impact on our life here,” helping to cultivate and support community.

They feel fortunate to be able to make a difference and provide opportunities for the Jewish community here. Their philosophy is simple: “Giving is what you do.” Now that their children are grown with families of their own, Sharon and Paul focus on nurturing the next generation of Jewish life.

Currently, they are funders of the Sharon and Paul Stein Israel and Overseas Committee (IOC) Speaker Series for 2025-2026, part of the JCRC of the Jewish Federation of Greater Naples. The IOC offers the community opportunities to explore Israel and Jewish life globally.

Paul and Sharon believe that the impact of one’s giving should be tangible and measurable. For them, the significance of a legacy donation is in setting an example for their children, grandchildren, and the broader community. They emphasize that establishing an endowment is accessible and provides an enduring gift, ensuring resources for the community well into the future. Their endowments, they hope, will help Federation anticipate and meet the evolving needs of Naples’s growing Jewish population, fostering a vibrant, welcoming environment for all.

y name is Melissa Barr, and I am thrilled to introduce myself to this wonderful community, many of whom I’ve already had the pleasure of meeting in person. It is an honor to join Jewish Federation of Greater Naples as the Business Development and Events Manager.

Before joining JFGN, I worked as a development coordinator in the nonprofit sector, including roles in both the arts and higher education.

Outside of work, I am a proud mom to four amazing children — Avi, Rebecca, Zach, and AlexMelissa Barr andra — who range in age from 19 to 26.

I am excited to join the talented FRD team with Alicia Feldman. I will be working closely with our current Fed Star advertisers while also welcoming new partners into the fold. As I grow in my role, I will be revisiting our business partnerships and sponsorship packages to expand our relationship within the community at large. Additionally, I will be working on development events, helping to ensure that our programs continue to run seamlessly, are lively, informative, meaningful, and of course, social!

A little bit about me: I recently moved to Naples from Upstate New York — the Albany region. (And for those of you from the tri-state area, yes, I know “upstate” can spark quite the debate!) My parents have made Naples their winter home for the past eight years, and I already feel a wonderful sense of belonging here as well.

Another big part of my life has always been dance. I am classically trained in ballet and spent 25 years as the Assistant Artistic Director of Northeast Ballet in Schenectady, NY. I’m especially excited to be so close to Miami City Ballet and can’t wait to see them perform at Artis—Naples.

When I’m not working or enjoying the arts, you can almost always find me listening to music — one of my biggest passions. And of course, I can’t forget to mention my deep love of dogs. I share my home with Emme, my Cockapoo, and Charlie, my Pom. Rounding out the family pack is Neil Diamond, my parents’ lovable Cavashon.

Thank you to the entire JFGN team for such a warm and generous welcome. I look forward to getting to know each of you and contributing to the meaningful work we do together.

Israel on Trial featuring the Honorable Roy Altman

he Honorable Roy K. Altman, United States District Court Judge, will be at the Nina Iser Jewish Cultural Center on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. to discuss the topic of his soon-to-be published book, Israel on Trial: Examining the History, the Evidence, and the Law. In an era shaped by viral slogans and curated outrage, Judge Altman will explain how to discern truth from propaganda as he addresses specific claims being made against Israel, including colonialism, apartheid, and genocide. In evaluating these claims, he will apply the courtroom-tested standards of burden of proof, corroboration, and chain of custody.

Through historical records, archaeological evidence, genetic data, and international law, Judge Altman will demonstrate what it means to demand proof and what’s at stake when we stop asking for it.

As a federal prosecutor at the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Miami, Judge Altman twice received the Director of the Executive Office of U.S. Attorneys’ Award for Superior Performance by a Federal Prosecutor. In 2013, he was named “Federal Prosecutor of the Year” by the Miami-Dade Chiefs of Police and the Law Enforcement Officers’ Charitable Foundation.

In 2014, Judge Altman became a partner at the Miami law firm of Podhurst Orseck, where he represented victims of airplane crashes and bank fraud conspiracies.

Opening night launches with the irresistible French crowd-pleaser Once Upon My Mother , based on Roland Perez’s bestselling autobiography. This exuberant and deeply touching film pays tribute to the most powerful force in the universe: a mother’s love (and if you’ve ever met a Jewish mother, you know that’s saying something).

In 1980, when Barhany was four, she traveled in a caravan of 300 people under the cover of darkness, loading everything they could onto their horses and carts. They eventually bribed their way past the Sudanese border to the northwest, where they met other Beta Israel refugees who eased their arrival.

Still, the next two years in Sudan were tense. Unable to reveal their Jewish identities, they observed Shabbat and kashrut in secret.

“My journey was terrifying, exhilarating, and at times we were unsure if we would survive, and it definitely put our faith and trust of our community in jeopardy,” Barhany said. “However, with help from strangers and family alike we were able to make it safely.

After thousands of years of yearning for the return to Jerusalem and unification of Am Yisrael, it was a dream come true for my parents to arrive in the land of Jerusalem."

Legacy of Lies Is finding the truth worth the risk?

O

n Wednesday, January 28 at 1:00 p.m., the Jewish Book Festival will welcome back author Lew Paper. We expect his presentation to be just as dynamic as was his last one here.

Ten years pass, and Sam’s son Max graduates from law school and takes a position at a small but prestigious

Let’s delve into the plot. The book opens with Sam Silver, former FBI agent-turned private investigator, tailing Jimmy Hoffa. The year is 1975. Ah… you know from history that a mystery is afoot! Sam sees Hoffa get into a vehicle with some men who are known to him from his years at the FBI. He makes a note. It turns out, this is the last time anyone sees Hoffa. A few months later, Sam takes his sailboat out on Chesapeake Bay… and doesn’t come back. By all appearances, he was swept off the boat by a jibing boom, even though

firm. His father’s lawyer summons him to his office and hands over a sealed envelope. Max reads the startling letter his father penned, apparently soon after the Hoffa disappearance.

Max learns that the Mafia poses a danger to him because of what’s in his father’s papers. But where are those papers?

Max’s apartment is ransacked. Someone chases his girlfriend, Morgan, stops in her driveway and gets out, then is bitten by Morgan’s dog. Who would do such a thing? And why? Of course, the Hoffa notes. Someone wants those papers and would not balk at using Morgan’s safety as leverage to get Max to deliver them.

Max has been suspicious for ye a rs t h a t his father ’s death was not an accident but was perpetrated by the people who had the most to lose if those papers fell into the wrong hands. A mysterious figure watches Max’s activities, even comes into the courtroom when he’s litigating a case. The plot thickens as it toggles

A Playful Night at the Annual Matzah Ball

T

he 4th Annual Jewish Federation of Greater Naples Matzah Ball —themed “Let’s Play” this year — was a vibrant celebration enjoyed by all and an enormous success!

Held on Saturday, December 6, it proved to be the perfect evening for the Jewish community’s 55-andunder crowd to ring in Hanukkah with flair.

Michael Rubenstein The moon was out, the stars were shining, and the temperature was just right. From the moment guests arrived at 7:00 p.m., they were greeted with cocktails, appetizers, upbeat music, and a chance to leave their worries at the door as they stepped into a whimsical world of fun and games.

Inside the Nina Iser Jewish Cultural Center, nostalgia met nightlife. Centerpieces made of classic board games transported guests back to their childhoods, while vibrant light displays danced across every wall.

Even the signature drinks joined the party — served in glowing cups that lit up with every sip.

The “play” theme came alive in every corner. Oversized yard games invited friendly competition, a donut truck served hot and heavenly sufganiyot, and a giant balloon Monopoly Man stood ready at the entrance for the ultimate photo

op. But the true showstopper?

T h e ra d i a nt, glowing dance floor. As guests danced, the lights p u l s e d a b ove and shimmered below creating a kinetic, contagious energy that pulled everyone in.

Pair those dazzling visuals with delicious bites from Sage Catering and the energetic beats of DJ Rebel, and it felt like a spectacular night of fun and play.

The Tribe Sets Sail for Memorable Havdallah Harbor Cruise

he Tribe, formerly known as Jewish Young Professionals, came together for an unforgettable evening on the water during November’s Havdallah Harbor Cruise. Fourteen members registered for the outing, making it the largest Tribal gathering since the arrival of the new program director, Mathew Kahn.

MCA Gives Back

M

C A m e m b e rs do more than go to lectures, play pickleball or go out to dinner. They also do what they can to fulfill the commandment to practice Tikkun Olam — to "repair the world" — through acts of justice, kindness and social responsibility.

Some members act in quiet ways, like providing rides to members who can’t drive. Others choose to participate in more formal activities that are organized by MCA members who selflessly devote their time to helping improve the lives of Naples area residents who are less fortunate than themselves.

One such person is Howard Greenfield, a retired engineer, grandfather, golfer, pickleball player and biker, who leads the MCA Habitat for Humanity project. Habitat for Humanity is an organization that constructs and repairs homes for individuals and families who cannot afford to buy one under normal circumstances. To purchase a Habitat

MCA volunteers at Habitat for Humanity site home, buyers must be a U.S. citizen, have a steady job, pass a background check, make a down payment of $1,000 and put in between 250 and 500 hours of sweat equity.

They also must complete courses in home economics, home maintenance and living in an HOA.

Every Tuesday throughout the year, a group of MCA members, led by Howard, go to a Habitat site somewhere in Collier County and help to build houses. They put up wood framing, install vinyl flooring and wood baseboards, paint and install a great deal of vinyl siding and soffits.

Tickled Pink and Together Again!

From pink pashminas to pink desserts, WCA opened the season in dazzling style

ink was everywhere — on tables, on chairs, in soup bowls, around shoulders, and most certainly in the smiles of the more than 400 women who filled the Arthrex ballroom for the WCA Welcome Back Luncheon on Friday, November 14. As guests entered, a chorus of “ooohs” and “ahhhhs” echoed throughout the room. Tall pink feathers swayed from each centerpiece, and a bright pink pashmina was at every seat, making the ballroom feel more like a celebration than a luncheon.

Luncheon Chairs Shelly Bell and Charlene Kerner worked with nearly 100 volunteers to ensure that every detail was perfect — from greeting and registering guests, to creating stunning table decorations, planning a delicious menu, and producing an outstanding program. Charlene explained, “Our volunteers are the heart of WCA. Everything you saw today, every feather, every printed place card and program handout, every detail, was created by our volunteers.” Shelly concurred, adding “The luncheon reflected countless hours of dedication from

The buzz in the room said it all: WCA is more than a series of programs and activities; it’s a vibrant community of friendship.

Susan Koeppel, WCA Speaker Series Chair, interviewed Eva in a conversation so captivating, you could hear a pin drop. They explored Eva’s journey to becoming the successful producer she is today and discussed how she discovers the shows she chooses to produce. Eva explained what a producer’s responsibilities entail, how the pandemic affected the industry, and answered the question on everyone’s minds: Is Broadway back?

The generosity shown during the afternoon was remarkable. The 50/50 drawing raised more than $1,000 for the Greater Naples Rebuild Israel Campaign. And the wo m e n of WCA arrived with carloads of donations, literally, as it took four vehicles to take the large bags filled with toiletries and personal items to the Baker Senior Center Naples.

Flip the Script on Aging

W

hen you think of an “Older American,” what image comes to mind? A parent or grandparent? A military veteran or grumpy neighbor? Or perhaps you just think of someone slow, weak or frail?

As the leading advocate for seniors in our community, its our goal at Baker Senior Center Naples to flip the script on such age-related stereotypes. Our stated mission is to provide “Confidence, Connection and Support” to adults over the age of 60 and their families, helping them thrive and enjoy life to its fullest. We do this through a range of comprehensive programs and services.

Often, we hear visitors share comments as they walk into our building for the first time. Comments such as, “Wow! This is not what I expected a senior center to be” or “This place is so bright and beautiful,” or “Everyone seems so active and happy.”

After hearing these comments so frequently, I eventually began to ask, “What did you expect?” The responses were always the same, “I expected it to be dark and dreary” or “I never expected it to be so big, bright and clean” or “I expected to see people sitting around and disengaged.”

Those who have visited us know that our 30,000-square-foot building, which opened in 2023, is filled with light and brightly colored art and, most importantly, members and clients who are engaged and thrive through the many wellness programs we offer. We dispel the myths created about aging through the media that often portray seniors as frail, forgetful and depressed.

Of course, this is not surprising as age stereotypes have been ingrained in each of us. Even as little children we learn nursery rhymes like “There was

an old woman who lived in a shoe” and “This old man.”

At Baker Senior Center Naples, we promote wellness and thriving in older adults through an average of 40 different programs each week that provide social engagement, physical activity, mental stimulation and cognitive support, which all lead to positive functioning and resilience.

We are one of just 111 senior centers in the United States accredited by the National Council on Aging, and the only one that provides comprehensive services by licensed and credentialed professionals such as mental health counseling, case management, dementia respite groups and caregiver support, all under one roof. We also offer a “choice” food pantry for those in need.

We are proud that Baker Senior Center Naples is considered the “central

address” in our community for older adults to meet and connect in a warm and nurturing environment.

e ended 2025 with a bang!

December was filled with rewarding and meaningful activities like student field trips, community engagement activities held outside our walls, public programs, and of course, our fabulous fundraising Luncheon. This annual winter

Luncheon lobby crowd fundraising event was held at the Vineyards Country Club with the largest attendance ever. Keynote Speaker Gillian Laub gave a wonderful presentation about her Live2Tell Project, in which she photographed and documented more than 300 Holocaust Survivors worldwide. Several Live2Tell portraits were on display in the lobby, and more were featured on centerpiece arrangements on each table.

We were honored to host a photoshoot with Gillian at the Museum, photographing and interviewing several Southwest Florida Survivors to be included in the Live2Tell Project. We look forward to sharing those images and testimonies at the Museum in the future. Gillian noted the importance of sharing the survivor stories

Special guest speaker and North Port High School teacher Zach Ward passionately spoke about the importance of Holocaust education and the impact that our Museum and education programs have had on himself and his students. Zach is a wonderful example of an UpStander, inspiring his students and colleagues to take a stand against hatred. Also joining us was Rabbi Adam Miller of Temple Shalom who offered moving remarks about the importance of the Museum’s mission and an opening prayer.

In December, we also hosted a special guest lecture by Dr. Serafima Velkovich, who heads the Family Roots Research Section of Yad Vashem Archives. She spoke about the role of family memory in the search for identity, showing how personal narratives interact with historical research.

Resonance

T

hough this article does not intend to directly compare the unique experience of the Holocaust with current events, it explores the reality of past traumatic experiences that can resonate in the present.

For many Holocaust Survivors and their descendants, what happens in the world today can quickly and painfully send them back to yesterday. There are many occasions, events, or news items that may have a jarring resonance for Holocaust Survivors and their descendants, such as bearing witness to someone's arrest without due process, reading about hungry children, hearing derogatory language directed at individuals or groups of people, the banning of books, seeing pictures of military soldiers in cities, or coming across a swastika symbol painted in a public place.

When one reads about renting an Airbnb with a swastika-like design embedded into the floor corners — a symbol that represented hate, persecution, and death for many innocent people, it resonates. Swastika.

Or sauvastika. Facing right or left.

Ancient history or recent, it probably doesn't matter, particularly for Survivors and their descendants.

Ida Margolis & Shelley Leib In a recent article in The Forward newsletter, journalist PJ Grisar recounts and explores his response to experiencing a swastika in his Airbnb. Although he wasn't alarmed, he started to find out more about it.

The image was part of a wooden floor in a house in the Hudson Valley of New York that dates to 1866. A Pulse-pounding, True-life Documentary Thriller Join us for the January Brazina Series presentation

T

he Road Between Us gives former Israel Defense Forces (IDF) General Noam Tibon a well-earned hero’s salute for courageously saving his family during the Hamas attacks of October 7, 2023.

The film chronicles how he drew upon his experience to charge into enemy fire when Hamas besieged Kibbutz Nahal Oz, the community in which his son’s family lived, that is less than one kilometer from the Gaza border.

Noam and his wife, Gali, who is every bit an equal as a hero, tell their story in this gripping saga. It’s an emotional tale of selflessness, as their actions eventually save more than 400 people during the attacks.

The filmmakers meticulously recreate the atrocities of October 7 by drawing upon an array of surveillance footage. Using videos livestreamed

by Hamas during the attacks, along with footage from security cameras in the kibbutz, highway traffic cams and dashboards of cars, The Road Between Us is a pulse-pounding, minute-by-minute survival thriller.

Canadian documentarian Barry Avrich, known for compelling works like Prosecuting Evil: The Extraordinary World of Ben Ferencz, takes

game as they hunker down in their panic room. The sealed cell keeps them alive in suffocating darkness, while sending WhatsApp messages that real time play by for Noam as he fights his way to the kibbutz.

Every second of Noam and Gali’s story unfolds with heart-pounding intensity. The scale of the carnage they encounter is staggering as they traverse streets and neighborhoods with bodies atop bodies.

Avrich finds captivating storytellers in the General and his wife, too, as they share their pain and their selflessness as they take detours to save additional lives enroute to Kibbutz Nahal Oz.

Interviews with Noam, Gali, their son, Amir, and daughter-in-law, Miri, along with other survivors capture a day that seems like hell on earth. The ticking clock of The Road Between Us begins when members of Hamas infiltrate Kibbutz Nahal Oz at daybreak, cutting through barriers supposedly

so impenetrable that the IDF had long ago pulled forces from the area. The clock keeps ticking and interviewees tell how fences and cameras provided little more than a false sense of security.

Noam, whose family nicknames him 9-1-1 for his ability to solve any emergency, shows the effectiveness of human intuition under fire.

Marty Supreme and A Private Life; Star Trek, and More Stars of David

E

ditor’s Note: Persons in bold are deemed by Nate Bloom to be Jewish for the purpose of this column. Persons identified as Jewish have at least one Jewish parent and were not raised in, or identify with, a faith other than Judaism.

For whatever reason, not much was released about Marty Supreme for months. My deadline for the December 2025 column came and went without more information. This “very Jewish” film opened on December 25. It’s a big flick and I knew it would play in a theater near you well into January. A flood of information finally came in before the deadline for this column. I could tell you more about the plot, but the detailed plot was in the reviews out on December 25 and you can read those online.

The “Jewish stuff” about Marty Supreme

Marty Supreme is a comedy based loosely on the life of Marty Reisman (1930–2012), a top Jewish table tennis player. Josh Safdie, 40, directed and co-wrote the film. Timothée Chalamet, 28, plays Marty (renamed Marty Mauser).

There are 29 cast members and nine are Jewish: Chalamet; Gwyneth

Paltrow, 53, (as Kay Stone, a socialite who befriends Marty); Odessa A’zion, 25, (as Rachel Mizler, a Jewish character married and having an affair with Marty, her lifelong best friend); Fran Drescher, 68, (as Rebecca Mauser, Marty’s mother); Sandra Bernhard, 70, (a small role as “Judy”); Isaac Mizrahi, 64, (plays “Merle”); Emory Cohen, 35, (as Ira Mizler, Rachel’s husband); David Mamet, 77, (small role as director Glenn Nordmann); and Fred Hechinger, 25, (small role as Troy).

I am quite sure that Timothée Chalamet is going to get a best actor Oscar nomination for playing a “real” Jew in two successive years (Bob Dylan, 2024; Marty Reiser, 2025).

Song Sung Blue

Also opening December 25 was Song Sung Blue . It is based on a real couple who formed a Neil Diamond tribute band and performed his songs in small venues. This film is another likely hit. The couple is played by Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson, 46.

A Private Life

A Private Life is a French-language film (subtitled) described as a

comic psychological thriller. It opens in the U.S. on January 16. It played at the prestigious Cannes Festival last April (not as a competing film). Reviews were stellar, and the audience gave it a 10-minute standing ovation.

Jodie Foster, who is fluent in French, plays Lilian Steiner, an American psychoanalyst living in Paris. Lilian is devastated when Paula Cohen-Solai, a client, takes her life. Or did Paula take her life? After I saw the two characters’ last names, I wondered: Are they both Jewish?

I found a translated interview with Rebecca Zlotowski, 45, the director and co-writer. She said the film delves deeply into Jewish culture.

Lilian Steiner (Jodie Foster) is Jewish; so was Paula; so is Paula’s husband, Simon Cohen-Solai, played

by French Jewish actor Mathieu Amarlic, 60. One more: Lilian’s Jewish ex-husband helps her investigate Paula’s death.

It dawned on me: there are five roles in the film, and all the characters are Jewish. I could go on and on about this film and its Jewish connections.

I know I am going to a theater to watch it.

His & Hers is a six-episode limited series premiering on Netflix on January 8. It’s based on a novel of the same name by Harlan Coben, 63. Premise: Anna is a burned-out former news anchor. A murder in her small Georgia hometown stirs her to look for answers. Police detective Jack Harper is also looking for the killer, and he is suspicious of Anna.

Jon Bernthal, 49, co-stars as Harper.

Bernthal is always busy: two action films last year (The Accountant 2 and The Amateur) and another Emmy nomination (2025) as a guest actor on The Bear.

Starfleet Academy

Starfleet Academy opens on Paramount+ on January 15 (two episodes on the 15th; the remaining eight will premiere on following Thursdays).

Starfleet is set in the far future, the 32nd century, and follows the first new class of Starfleet cadets in over a century as they come of age and train to be officers. Oded Fehr, 56, plays Fleet Admiral Charles Vance.

Followers of Star Trek: Discovery know he played Vance from 2020 to 2024. Fehr was born in Israel and served in the Israeli Navy.

The challenges of Jewish-Christian grandparenting Aging Jewishly — What our traditions teach us about growing old.

eth stood quietly at the senior center’s m a i n e n t ra n ce , looking around for a familiar face. She had forgotten that Board Game Day brought out the crowds, and she chided herself for arriving late, especially now that the only available spot was with someone she didn’t know.

An expert on interfaith issues, Ruth believes it is essential to create a climate where grandparents like Doug and Beth can talk and share.

Her courses that began in 2019 do just that.

Although they may not be versed in current statistics, Beth and Doug represent a growing trend in JewishChristian interfaith relations. According to a Pew Research Center report titled “Review and Analysis of the Interfaith Marriage Data,” published May 12, 2021, on the Center for Radically Inclusive Judaism’s website, interfaith marriage rates continue to climb. Today, “72% of non-Orthodox Jews who married between 2010 and 2020 are intermarried.”

For example, Ruth emphasizes, “In session one, grandparents explore how to pass down what’s meaningful to them while honoring the choices their kids have made.”

Beth took her seat and a friendly gentleman, Doug, greeted her warmly. Scrabble was the game of choice and after sharing pleasantries, Beth began to play in earnest while Doug seemed distracted from what he had said was his favorite game.

“I’m sorry,” Doug said. “It’s just that I’ve got a lot on my mind.” Beth replied, “I know we’ve just met but if you want to talk, I’m a good listener.”

Doug’s smile was one of relief. “It’s my grandkids. They’re Jewish, but I’m not. I’m Christian. It’s getting more complicated by the day.”

Beth shook her head almost in disbelief. Here she was, sitting with someone she’d just met, and the

Their feelings inspired author and Brandeis Women’s Studies Research Center scholar Ruth Nemzoff to create a four-session course aimed at bridging the gap: the chasm between non-Jewish grandparents, like Doug,

She also focuses one class on Jewish holidays and how a Jewish grandparent can diplomatically introduce Jewish celebrations to their son or daughter’s Christian family and how Christian grandparents can do the same.

Ruth reminds grandparents that “December doesn’t have to be a competition,” and that opening a discussion about holiday celebrations can create an environment of cultural understanding for their grandchildren.

Volunteers do not necessarily have the time, they just have the heart.

Experts in the field of Interfaith Family Relations offer suggestions that include an emphasis on the positives, and grandparents themselves share their wisdom derived from their own lived experience.

As one Jewish grandmother of Catholic grandchildren says, “Lose the guilt. As parents of our adult children, we know that we gave our kids the best we could at the time. If they’ve found another spiritual path, we should applaud their choice to raise their children guided by spiritual principles — even if those principles come from a religion different from our own.”

“Find a group,” says a Catholic grandparent who works hard to understand the Jewish traditions observed by his grandchildren.

“Me and another grandparent got together and posted on social media so that we could help each other out.

We found the Facebook page called Interfaith Family Groups. We share articles, ideas and even books our grandkids can read to learn about their grandparents’ religion.”

The international interfaith organization, 18 Doors, formerly InterfaithFamily.com, offers resources for interfaith families, including a recent virtual discussion: “Not sure how to talk to your adult child about their observance of Passover and Easter, and how you can connect with your grandchild?”

The organization 18 Doors and many other local Jewish Federation sponsored groups remind grandparents that a world of resources await them — and most of all, “You’re not alone.”

Building Community Is the Light that NJC Carries Forward Steve McCloskey NJC President

W

e at NJC recognize that building community, the light that unites us, mirrors the light that carries us forward. Building community is all about making connections for and among our members, much as it is at the Federation.

NJC has weekly Shabbat services that emphasize the centrality of religious life in our congregational life. We are blessed to have an outstanding spiritual leader, Rabbi Howard Herman, who has guided us on our path to a greater understanding of the wondrous nature of Judaism and its particular relevance to grappling with the vicissitudes of today’s turbulent world. Sharing the joy of song, the closeness gleaned from participating in communal prayer and learning on Shabbat is

just one of the many ways in which we build community.

Education is one of the pillars of the construct that is Reform Judaism.

Rabbi Herman leads us in six sessions of Life Long Learning each year, with topics as diverse as the breadth that is Judaism. He unfailingly delights in imparting his vast font of knowledge of Judaism to us through fascinating offerings and discussion.

For the months of January through March, the topics are: This Too is Torah: Exploring Sex in the Texts, Meaning and Mussar (the Jewish study of applying personal ethics to our daily live) and Jewish Ethics in Modern Life: Scenarios from the New York Times Ethicist. Learning together about the richness of Jewish thought is another wonderful way in which we build community.

On Saturday, January 17, the NJC men will be showcased at our Men’s Shabbat Torah service and will host our 2nd Annual Kiddush barbecue, brought back by popular demand.

Our Federation Shabbat will be held on Friday, February 27, with both Nat Ritter, Jewish Federation of Greater Naples (JFGN) Board Chair, and Nammie Ichilov, JFGN CEO/President speaking to us about how the Federation can help us build community.

Our Sisterhood will lead our Shabbat Torah service on Saturday, March 21.

These special Shabbat services provide yet another opportunity for NJC to build community within its ranks and by outreach to the greater Jewish community.

One of the many ways we at NJC make connections is through socializing with each other in a variety of settings. In addition to our weekly onegs following Friday night Shabbat services, we also have a Kiddush luncheon following our six Saturday Shabbat Torah services, as well as light dinners following our six Life Long Learning sessions and before our summer months Friday Shabbat services. Building community while noshing is a time-honored Jewish tradition. Flamingle outings are yet

another chance for our members to share in the warmth of each other’s company. The same purpose is served by our Men’s breakfasts held monthly and our monthly Poker nights.

We have a very active Sisterhood, led by Sue Falkenstein, which offers a plethora of quite varied events that serve to bring NJC’s women together in community. The Sisterhood Book Club, moderated by Ruth Simon, explores about three to four books a year with either a Jewish theme or by a Jewish author. Art in the Garden is also a popular event that combines an art project conceived and guided by Gale Shamblott, our resident artist with movement led by Sue Falkenstein.

Our active Social Action Committee (SAC) builds community from within and without. Our members work with one another and engage with the community in programs such as Backpacks for Kids and Empty Bowls Naples to give back and to pay it forward. These efforts help to fulfill our Judaic imperative of outreach to help others, a laudatory tradition.

Our founder, Henrietta Szold, lived a life that showed that one person can make a difference. Our chapter moves forward thanks to our many generous and active members and leaders.

As we celebrated Hanukah, we were reminded of “the light we carry forward.” The symbolic resilience of the Jewish people is evidenced by Hadassah. One of their most wellknown achievements is its support

Following the tragedy of October 7, 2023, the lights went on at the Gandel Rehabilitation Center on Mt. Scopus in Jerusalem. Opening months earlier than expected, this center welcomed PTSD victims of trauma as well as hundreds with physical injures. For all Israelis, we shined the light of Jewish resilience.

In Jerusalem, Hadassah patients are accommodated deep underground in a new Intensive Care Unit: safe from conventional, biological and chemical attacks. Six new operating theaters at Ein Kerem Campus Round Building
