Renewing Our Planning Focus in an Increasingly Diverse Community

I am honored to have returned to Jewish Long Beach (formerly Jewish Federation & Jewish Community Foundation) after a hiatus as Interim Executive Director of the Alpert Jewish Community Center and a few months playing in my garden! Coming back to the newly combined organization is a great pleasure. I feel I have now come full circle. I began my nonprofit career with the federation and JCC in El Paso, Texas, in 1992 as my husband began his first year as a newly ordained Rabbi. This month he will retire after 38 years in the rabbinate. My experience in El Paso, a small and intensely involved Jewish community, motivated me to pursue a career in Jewish Communal Service and Social Work, after spending 10 years in sales & marketing management. I ultimately served the communities of El Paso, Texas; Detroit, Michigan; Columbus, Ohio; and Long Beach. In each of these experiences I learned the importance of the role of careful planning played in sustaining these incredible communities. In our personal lives we plan so many things… vacations, careers, birthdays and anniversary celebrations. A well-planned celebration or trip can bring us lifelong memories. Communities, like families, need planning in order to ensure sustainability. Judaism, after all, is based on memories and aspirations - memories of our

people, our past, and our communities, and aspirations for future generations. Well curated memories, events and programs help us connect and enrich our lives.

During my fourteen years with the Jewish Federation & Jewish Community Foundation we planned diligently to fund & create innovative programs to ensure the future of the Long Beach Jewish community and its agencies. And throughout its 75-year history, the Alpert Jewish Community Center has planned how to create stellar experiences for families, children, and adults. Now we find ourselves at a crossroads, wondering how best to sustain our community for generations to come in a changing and increasingly diverse American Jewish milieu.

Data from the recently published Long Beach Jewish Community Study makes clear that many of the 28,000 Jews and their 10,000 family members living in 17,700 area households are looking for connection and engagement with the Jewish community. We want every Jewish person and family member to feel that Long Beach’s Jewish life speaks to them and addresses their needs.

As we embrace the Community Study data and learn more about the beautiful and varied identities that make up and enrich our community, we commit to a learning process to better understand people’s individual experiences and how we can do more to foster and strengthen a sense of belonging for all.

We have already begun to utilize the data we gathered from the Community Study to enrich

our strategic planning process. After diligent work by our strategic planning task force, my predecessor Zach Benjamin, our current Jewish Long Beach & Alpert JCC president Richard Marcus, and board member and Co-chair Seth Linden, we are privileged to have created a strategic road map for our community and our recently integrated organizations. We are happy to have been able to benefit from their, and their task forces’ expertise.

The plan recognizes four pillars our board will rally around to create new innovative initiatives which can ensure our vibrant future:

1. Engagement Across Our Entire Community; 2. A Strong Central Address for Jewish Life; 3. Jewish Representation in the Broader Community; and

4. Sustainability Financial, Leadership, and Brand Strength. Each of these pillars has been intentionally designed to stimulate new thinking as we further develop our new organization.

As these pillars unfold, we know that renewed facilities, new innovative programs, and increased endowments will be critical to ensuring a bright future. As we continue our planning process, we will also launch a new campaign this fall in commemoration of the Jewish Long Beach & Alpert JCC’s 75th anniversary. We urge you to join us for a special havdalah event on Saturday, July 29 @ 7 pm to learn more about this exciting pivotal moment in our community. For more information on how to get involved please contact Kevin Giser at kgiser@jewishlongbeach.org

Security is Everyone’s Responsibility

How often have you made an observation and thought, “Somebody ought to do something about that!”? Maybe this occurs daily. Now, how often have you thought, “I can do something about that!”? Taking steps to help ensure a safe environment for ourselves and others is everyone’s responsibility. We are stronger when we work together and with everyone’s wellbeing in mind.

If you have attended BeAware training, perhaps you have already made it a habit to look for the nearest and a backup exit in every room you find yourself. If you have attended Countering Active Threat training, perhaps your habit also now includes looking for the best place to hide and items you could use to fight. (If these are not your habits, attend an upcoming training! Visit jewishlongbeach.org/ security to learn more.) These are two good examples of taking control of your own personal security. Now, what can you do to help others?

Take notice of your surroundings on a regular and ongoing basis. Analyze whether what you are observing is normal for the situation,

keeping in mind any potential cognitive biases you may have (and we all have them). If something is not normal, decide what you will do about it. (Yes, YOU!) Then, commit to taking some type of action.

Don’t shy away from helping others and keeping the environment safe. Even small, simple acts can have an important impact. If a door is propped open when it shouldn’t be, your simple deed of reporting it could be a life-saving action. Did you see someone fall? It will only take a minute to call for help if it is needed. Does something smell strange? Tell someone who might know whether it is concerning. These are easy, minimal steps. If you are comfortable, you could go further and do something to address the situation. Is there a tripping hazard? Take a moment to remove it. Do you see a still-lit cigarette on the ground? Smother it.

What if you just aren’t sure whether something is a risk? Take detailed notes of your observations and report them anyway. You generally are not going to cause harm by sharing your information. However, assuming someone else will handle it or waiting for a situation to become worse could be detrimental. Be the person who makes a difference!

How safe is your home? You probably have

the makings of a first-aid kit there. Does everyone know where it is? Do they know how to stop a bleeding injury? What about bleeding from a gunshot or stabbing wound? (Stop The Bleed training is coming soon!) Do your children know how and when to dial 9-1-1? (If they have a digital device, they are likely capable.) Do your parents know how to identify a cyber fraud scheme? Do you have an emergency plan for your family in a natural disaster? If communication systems are down, where will you meet? Have you talked about this? If you haven’t, start today!

Are you taking a trip this summer? How can you protect yourself and your travel companions? Whether domestic or international, there are plenty of easy steps you can take to help prevent harm. Look for travel safety training (provided virtually) on the Jewish Long Beach calendar.

Taking steps to help make our world safer is an easy way to contribute to our community. Thank you for your help!

There is a natural flow to the seasons. A cycle of the earth that is older than any one of our institutions. For longer than we have record, people have been experiencing the change of sky and earth from cold to warm and warm to cold again. Of the many things that tie us to generations that have come before us, there is possibly nothing more unifying than the seasons. We feel it in our bodies, and it changes us, charges us to pick up and take to the outside, or to cozy up with a book.

No surprise then, that our tradition has a long-standing relationship with this course. In the fall, we pick up our lives and vision for an arriving new year. We reflect on the big picture and prepare to send our children and grandchildren to school. We feel history. In the winter, we let ourselves calm. Times of hibernation are natural for all living things. We recharge, and of course, remind ourselves that even at the darkest time of the year light is important and possible. In spring we awaken with matzah to the need for repair in our world. The work of justice so familiar to us as it’s as if resting right there on our tongue, and then we get to work.

But summer is a different thing altogether. We don’t have any major holidays in this season. There’s Tu B’av, a minor holiday, and the Jewish Valentine’s Day, and Tisha B’av our day of mourning comes at the end, but what about the middle? That giant span of weeks and months when the sun is brightly shining and camp is in full swing, doesn’t have any of the big family dinners. There’s no need to dust off your suit or decorate the house. It’s just a time of rest, in between, and it’s surprising that Judaism seems not to have anything to say about it, no round challahs or pointy hamentaschen. It’s just time, almost as if our tradition is telling us that the work has been done, our hearts and minds are in the right place, and we can just go outside, and enjoy.

Leaving a Legacy with Jewish Values

The Jewish practice of leaving a legacy for the next generation is one of our most ancient customs, passing down traditions and shared values worth more than resources and material goods. From Moses’s farewell address to the recently freed Hebrew people to Jacob’s prophetic words to his children, Jewish values have been willed down L’Dor V’Dor (from generation to generation). These ethical wills focused on living a good, righteous life, doing Tzedakah (justice) through actions in our daily lives and charity.

With Jewish Long Beach and the Jewish Community Foundation, your legacy can create opportunities for your children and future generations to continue the philanthropic work that inspires you today. Your passion for local, national and global causes transcends our individual lifetimes. The Jewish value of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), has inspired generations of philanthropists to invest in the future they won’t be around to see.

The Jewish Community Foundation has opportunities for all planned gift sizes and ways to make your legacy a family tradition for philanthropy today and in the future. Begin your family’s legacy, today.

Whispers of Transformation: Embracing Education, Unity, and Enduring Legacy at the Hebrew Academy

Discover the transformative power of education and the heartwarming journey of a mother and her child at the Hebrew Academy – a story that will inspire, uplift, and reaffirm the importance of community and values in shaping young lives.

In the hushed tranquility of the early morning, a mother sits at the kitchen table, savoring a warm cup of coffee. As the peaceful silence enveloped the room, memories of the past summer breaks flooded her mind, evoking excitement and apprehension. It was the first day of summer break, and the prospect of juggling work and keeping her child engaged during the long summer days loomed over her, adding an undercurrent of stress to the quiet morning. As the first sip touched her lips, the soft hum of a familiar tune filled the air.

Intrigued, she followed the melodious hum; in the next room, she found her child immersed in a world of Lego bricks constructing superheroes – protectors of justice and symbols of strength. Amidst the imaginative play, her child’s lips moved gently, softly reciting the words of the Shema, a cherished Jewish prayer. In that unexpected moment, tears filled the mother’s eyes as she realized the profound impact of her child’s Hebrew Academy Community Day School experience.

Overwhelmed with emotions, she could not help but reflect on the journey that had brought them to this point. The Hebrew Academy had not only imparted academic knowledge but had also nurtured a sense of joy, community, and enduring values that permeated every aspect of her child’s life. It was a transformation that extended far beyond the classroom walls.

Her child had been introduced to the richness of Jewish traditions and celebrations at the Hebrew Academy. From the radiant glow of Chanukah to the introspection of Yom Kippur and the exuberance of Purim, each festival had become interwoven with her child’s spirit, fostering a profound connection to their Jewish identity. As she reflected on her child’s transformative journey, she couldn’t help but recall the heartfelt promises made by Rabbi Popack when he initially proposed the idea of enrolling her child at the Hebrew Academy. “Your child will be wholeheartedly embraced,” Rabbi Popack assured her. “We create an environment where each student feels valued and supported, enabling them to thrive academically, emotionally, and spiritually.”

Those words echoed in her mind as she witnessed the remarkable

growth her child had experienced. The warmth and support of the Hebrew Academy community, as Rabbi Popack had promised her child, did blossom academically, emotionally, and spiritually.

As the mother continued watching her child engrossed in play and the continued hum of the Shema, she felt an overwhelming appreciation for the role the Hebrew Academy had played in their lives. It had become a catalyst for cultivating belonging, fostering community, and instilling enduring values far beyond the academic year.

Initially hesitant and uncertain about attending local synagogue celebrations, the mother found solace in the warmth and inclusivity of the school community. Encouraged by their support, she discovered the power of unity and the strength of the community in navigating the challenges of single parenthood. At that moment, she understood the depth of her network. Gratitude welled within her for the scholarship that enabled her son to attend the Hebrew Academy, deepening her appreciation for the opportunities it provided.

“Accepting the scholarship is not just about receiving assistance,” Rabbi Popack compassionately reassured her, “It’s about recognizing that through this support, you are empowered to give back and make a difference in the lives of others. It’s a cycle of support and unity that strengthens our community.”

These words from Rabbi Popack echoed in her mind as she reflected on her journey. She realized that the scholarship she had received was not simply financial aid but the pebble that created the ripple effect of generosity and support; they now had the opportunity to give back and uplift others.

With a renewed sense of purpose with the fading hum of the Shema in the air, she reached out to a fellow parent from the school. and extended an invitation for a playdate. This simple act fostered a sense of connection and community, allowing her to focus on her work with the reassurance that her child was positively engaged.

Returning to the kitchen, embracing the remaining few moments of morning solitude, a smile graces her face, and gratitude fills her heart. Gratitude to the Hebrew Academy, which has become their foundation, and grateful to be a part of a community where the transformative power of education meets the warmth of a supportive family, knowing the true measure of a community lies in what it gives and not what it receives.

Today, we extend an invitation to you to join us at the Hebrew Academy, where your values find a home, your dreams find wings, and your impact finds purpose. Embrace the opportunity to be part of a community that values academic excellence, fosters a sense of belonging, and instills enduring values.

At the Hebrew Academy, we believe that education is not just about knowledge but also about character, compassion, and making a positive difference in the world.

ChayaLeah Sufrin is named to Hadassah’s 18 Zionist Women to Know!

Long Beach Hillel’s Executive Director, ChayaLeah Sufrin, was recently named to Hadassah’s inaugural class of 18 Zionist Women to Know! This honor is part of Hadassah’s celebration of Israel’s 75th birthday, recognizing the female movers and shakers that continue to breathe new life into Zionism and Israel, around the world, and in communities like ours. The 18 visionary, determined women on our list are doing essential work, individually and collectively,” said Hadassah CEO Naomi Adler. “They are educating Jews and non-Jews

about what Zionism is and is not and advocating for Zionism in the US and around the world. Everyone who cares about Israel should know their names.”

Among the other 18 women recognized is the host of Jeopardy!, Mayim Bialik, executive editor of Jewish Insider, Melissa Weiss, and industry leaders across journalism, academia, acting and other fields. ChayaLeah is a graduate of Jewish Long Beach’s Alpert New Leaders Forum, an active member of the Long Beach Kehillah Leadership Council, a consistent volunteer at Jewish Long Beach & Alpert JCC, and extremely generous with her time and expertise. Hadassah describes her as an educator and community builder, which perfectly encapsulates the ruach, spirit, she brings to everything she is involved in. Being a Jewish professional on a university campus is not always easy, yet ChayaLeah is never afraid to have tough conversations about

the issues facing Israel and the Jewish people at large. She has a long track record of leading inspiring missions to Israel for young Jews and non-Jewish students, fostering a better future for the next generation of Zionists. ChayaLeah continues to study and learn at the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem.

ChayaLeah also cohosts the podcast Ask a Jew, which covers culture, politics, humor, and life. Family is everything to ChayaLeah, who is married to Boruch Sufrin and has four sons. On behalf of the greater Long Beach Jewish community, we wish her a Yasher Koach on this remarkable accomplishment and recognition.

Watch Us Grow!

As we continue our exploration of gardening, the values of Tikkun Olam (Repair of the World), G’milut Chasadim (Acts of LovingKindness), and Bal Tasheet (Do Not Destroy) have become constant practice. We interact with the birds and insects that visit our garden, practice daily care of our garden and classroom plants, plant seeds, and observe fragile new growth. Caring for living things helps to cultivate empathy, an important skill in early childhood development.

Thanks to the ongoing support from generous community members, we planted various vegetables and fruits in our raised garden bed on the Falk Playground. The children also had the opportunity to taste some of our snap peas and green beans, and we are waiting for our tomatoes to signal that they are ready by changing from green to red. Transplanting the bean we grew in our “window greenhouse” also caused much excitement. The children had the opportunity to see the re-growth of

Summertime Means Wellness & Fun at the J!

The AJCC was just named one of the Top 5 Gyms in Long Beach by the Long Beach Post! Come check it out and say hi to our amazing team!

Summer is here, and now is a great time to add some health and wellness activity into your schedule. “Your Center for Life” promises a season full of fun, restorative, high-quality programs.

The J is where enjoyment meets dedication and community. Our wellness programs suit any level of fitness, and we have outstanding trainers and instructors, including a few new folks who would love to meet you! Drop by for a workout in the Alban Fitness Center, open 7 days per week. For our fitness fans and weekday warriors, I recommend taking our specialty Power Yoga, Spin, and Tae Bo® Fitness classes. Looking for a more recreational vibe and carefree pace? Try our Step-and-Balance, Low-n-Sculpt Aerobics, or Functional Training classes built to give you a respite from the hustle and bustle of the daily grind. Join our group fitness classes and move to everything from Bruce Springsteen to Bad Bunny. Each class offers a social experience, which brings an energy unlike any other. You are also invited to check out our pickleball and basketball courts

located in the Feldman Family Gymnasium. With restoration being another core theme of our wellness programs, this season be sure to step into the Feiwell Dance and Aerobics Studio and spend some time on the mat with any of our amazing yoga instructors, whose calm and soothing energy will leave you feeling reinvigorated. If mindfulness and lounging are your goals, then make the Alpert JCC your destination for a picture-perfect SoCal summer in our beautiful outdoor spaces. The Mary Alpert Pool is the perfect community gathering spot for every generation. From the pool deck you can witness the wonder of little ones entering the water for the first time, see the pride and teamwork of our Bluefin Swim Team, observe the exhilaration of established swimmers owning their lanes, or join in an aqua aerobics class. Whether you’re participating or spectating, our aquatics programs are a beautiful reminder of our flourishing community.

Join us! Jump into summer at the Alpert JCC and reconnect with the wellness of your body, soul, and spirit. Our Center is excited and proud to provide a place of fun and rejuvenation for the entire family this season. Our new classes and programs have something

celery and will continue to explore how other fruits and vegetables grow. We had multiple germination activities and opportunities as well. One way we take care of our indoor plants and garden is by routine watering. The children have used a variety of items to water plants such as pipettes, turkey basters, watering cans, and the water hose. We learned that different vegetables, fruits, plants, and flowers grow during certain seasons. Many Jewish holidays have agricultural origins, and the Jewish calendar is centered around planting and harvesting seasons. Within Jewish agricultural law, we find guidance on how to live an ethical and environmentally cautious life.

Congrgation Shir Chadash

Since the early 1950’s the Synagogue known as Congregation Shir Chadash has offered a religious home to generations of area Jews. Founded by some of the Jewish developers of Lakewood, it has seen generations of births, deaths, weddings, B’ney Mitzvahs, Jewish holidays, religious services, and much more. Love, laughter, and too many noshes have been celebrated here but the time to say goodbye has come. Sadly, the building that has shared itself with the community under the names of Temple Beth El, Temple Sinai, Temple Zion, Temple Beth Zion-Sinai and lastly Congregation Shir Chadash is closing its doors. If you have memorial plaques gracing the walls of the temple and would like to come to claim them, please call the office at 562.429.0715 and let Carol know when you can come in to get them. It is also hoped that you will come by during Shabbat services to worship with us one last time before we close our doors permanently in mid-July.

The NCJW Greater Long Beach and W. Orange County Board had their installation during Charter Day, June 25, at Temple Beth Shalom, Long Beach, and will have their new Board Orientation on July 30, at 9:00 am at the Alpert JCC on the Weinberg Jewish Long Beach Campus. MAKING A TRIBUTE

Yazmina Prado will be called to the Torah for her Bat Mitzvah. Yazmina has made lifelong friendships and memories at Temple Beth David, having been part of the temple family since attending the ECLC for Preschool. She enjoys exploring all kinds of creative activities such as theater, dance, and music, trying new hobbies, and playing Volleyball.

Yazmina is naturally compassionate and cares deeply for environmental issues. She has been a Girl Scout since the 1st grade, which has instilled in her a drive for community action and social justice. Coupled with her passion for caring for children it’s fitting that she has chosen to help provide children entering the Foster Care system with necessities and comfort items for her Mitzvah project.

Nathan Bloch

Saturday, August 12, 10:30 am

Nathan Bloch will be called to the Torah for his Bar Mitzvah. Nathan is a 7th grader at Van Damme Academy. Besides English, he speaks Mandarin and Spanish. His passion is hockey, and you will find him on the ice every chance he gets. He is an elite-level goalie on a AAA team and has played throughout the United States and Canada. In his spare time, he also enjoys fishing, skiing, snowboarding, lacrosse, mountain biking, and video games. He has been a part of the Temple Beth David community since birth.

He enjoys helping others and giving back to the community. For his Mitzvah project, he volunteered to help to coach and referee the LA King’s handicapped sled hockey team. He hopes to continue doing this for years to come. He also volunteered these last few years helping with the Temple Beth David Hannukah and Purim Carnivals.

Making a tribute is a thoughtful way to celebrate a friend, family member, teacher, milestone, or special occasion. A tribute gift is also a heartfelt way to acknowledge the passing of a loved one. We will send a card to the person you are honoring, or to the family of the person being remembered, letting them know of your thoughtfulness and generosity. A list of all tributes will be published in the next Jewish Long Beach Chronicle, as well as listed on our website. September/October issue tributes are due by August 3, 2023.

Tributes can be directed to support Jessie Butler Senior Meals, Campus Security, financial aid for our Early Childcare Education center, Camp Komaroff scholarships, JCC Maccabi Games, Jewish Life & Culture programs, capital improvement projects, and your favorite program!

Tributes can be made directly on our website at www.jewishlongbeach.org and by contacting Yolanda Placencio, at 562-426-7601 extension 1314 or by email at yplacencio@jewishlongbeach.org
