Shavuot is a unique holiday, as it combines multiple religious observances into one festive occasion. Marked exactly 50 days after Passover, Shavuot (also pronounced Shavuos) commemorates the spring harvest, and the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. In honor of the harvest festival, pilgrimage to Israel is traditional at this time of year. Shavuot is observed on 6 Sivan, which falls this year on June 5-6, 2022.

Food is integral to Jewish celebration, and Shavuot is no exception. Dairy is the traditional fare, and while the origins aren’t exactly clear, it has become the holiday custom to enjoy cheese and milk products. Many believe this represents the “Land of Milk and Honey” that was promised to the Israelites in the days of old.
