The Aussie Gourmet: Rocky Road Fudge 11

Dear Readers,

Our status quo has changed in so many ways over the past year.

Our homes became schools; our lawns became shuls; our dens became dating spots.

Certainly, the pandemic has taught us that we can’t take “normal” for granted anymore. But it has also taught us – shown us and proven to us – that we have a resiliency and an ability to roll with the punches that we may not have been aware of.

Last week, Bernie Sanders told the Senate that a COVID-19 relief bill needed to pass because “you’ve got young people who want to go to school, who want to socialize, want to date, want to do things that young people do. And they can’t do it and have been unable to do that for the last year…”

In our community, where we hold marriage to be sacred, our young couples need to date. They can’t be forced to stay at home and date over Zoom for a year. And so, when it was clear that corona was more than just a passing, seasonal flu, community members with creativity and compassion jumped in to help young men and women meet each other in a sensitive, safe way.

I loved reading Malky Lowinger’s article this week because it highlighted how our community does chessed. Upon seeing a need, people don’t just plunk down a wad of dollar bills for a cause; they give with heart. And they give with a full heart.

Their desire to help others is almost a mission – and it’s a mission that they take on with enthusiasm and with excitement.

Think about the many chessed organizations in our community. Each of them started with an individual or a group of individuals seeing a need. While their hearts hurt for the person or family in need, they brainstormed of ways to help. And when their idea started coming off the ground, they enlisted others, who embraced the opportunity as though they were helping their own brothers and sisters.

In the Five Towns, it’s apparent that we’re a community with a “heart.” We’re a community that feels the pain of others and reaches out to help. We’re a community that gives to one another and is there for one another. We’re a community of doers and of givers.

Certainly, the pandemic has highlighted our compassion, our creativity, and our very full hearts.

Wishing you a wonderful week, Shoshana
