United Jewish Federation of Utah

SINCE 1943 1943 The Salt Lake Jewish Welfare Fund (JWF), a group dedicated to humanitarian needs, is established.

1978 JWF's name is changed to United Jewish Council of Utah (UJC). The Council's members represent every Utah Jewish organization and led by the Presidents, Vice Presidents and Treasurers of the constitutent organizations.

1992 UJC's name is changed to the United Jewish Federation of Utah (UJF), an affiliate of the North American United Jewish Federations. First Executive Director, Roberta Grunauer, is hired.

The United Jewish Federation of Utah is an inclusive volunteer-driven organization dedicated to preserving, enriching, and caring for the Utah Jewish community and Jewish communities around the world. The Utah Federation is affiliated with the Jewish Federations of North America (JFNA), which represents 146 independent Federations and a network of 300 smaller communities across the continent. We share JFNA's mission to protect and enhance the well-being of Jews worldwide through meaningful contributions to community, Israel and civil society. Through our engagement programs, we bring together Jews of all ages to build relationships, learn and create strong Jewish identities, and contribute to our dynamic and vibrant Jewish community statewide. Our members' financial contributions to the Federation also enable us to meet local Jewish community needs, support Israelis through social service and educational programs, and rebuild and strengthen Jewish communities around the world. Our partnerships with local Jewish organizations, as well as international partners (World ORT, the Joint Distribution Committee, and the Jewish Agency for Israel), enable the United Jewish Federation of Utah to improve the lives of Jews in Utah and worldwide. As we celebrate the Utah Federation's 80th year, we hope that you will continue to engage in our programs and invest in our work. Our mission Care for individuals and families who are vulnerable and at-risk Enhance Jewish identity and deepen engagement in Jewish life Strengthen bonds between the Utah Jewish community and Jewish communities around the globe

Today Known today as "the Federation," the organization serves Jews throughout the state including communities in and around Salt Lake City Park City, Ogden and St. George.

FEDERATION ANNUAL REPORT 2022

YOUR IMPACT Dear Friends, Thank you for being a part of the United Jewish Federation of Utah. Since 1943, the Federation has promoted Jewish identity and community here at home and abroad. As we begin to celebrate our 80th year, we are proud of what has been accomplished and even more excited about continuing to expand the Federation's reach and impact. Your financial support, volunteer time and participation make all of what the Federation does possible. In the 2022 Annual Report, you will see how your dollars were used to support Jewish families with young children, religious school students and campers, senior care and safety net services, as well as those fleeing from war. Your donations made celebrations of holidays, learning Jewish ethics and Hebrew, and combatting antisemitism possible. Your donations also supported social and educational programming for all ages, community programming for Yom HaShoah and Yom Ha’atzmaut, and an Israeli emissary to connect us in a personal way to Israel and so much more. Throughout 2022, our board and staff were motivated and humbled by your generosity. We were especially proud that we were able to: Contribute $276,762.00 and almost 800 pounds of over-the-counter medical supplies to the Joint Distribution Committee for the Ukraine relief and recovery effort. Enable four Utah public high school teachers to participate in the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial Foundation’s new year-long educational initiative, the Auschwitz Legacy Fellowship. Send eight members of our Community Partners Against Hate to the Eradicate Hate Global Summit in Pittsburgh, home of the Tree of Life Synagogue. Our Federation’s future is bright; we are committed to engaging Jews throughout the state in new ways, to ensuring the safety and security of our organizations and people, and to providing for future generations through our Life & Legacy program. To those of you just getting to know us, we invite you to learn more about our impact and how you can partner with us to build the Jewish community in a way that is meaningful to you. On behalf of the United Jewish Federation of Utah’s Board and professional staff, todah rabbah/thank you for your generosity, trust, and support in building a vibrant and inclusive Jewish community in Utah.

Sincerely, Alex Shapiro Executive Director

BeeCHAIs: Next Gen Utah Creating Community for Young Adults

The Federation’s goal is to strengthen our community by offering young adults the opportunity to experience Jewish life in ways that are connective, inspiring, fun, and meaningful. Programs in 2022 included snowshoeing by moonlight and celebrating Mimouna, the Jewish North African after Passover tradition, "Challahween," "Friendsgiving" and Hanukkah.

PJ Library

Something magical happens when parents sit down and read to their children. Our investment in PJ Library allows for almost 600 children in over 400 families in Utah to receive books monthly and to share Jewish stories that talk about values and traditions that are important to them. In 2022, we held programs that taught about being "mitzvah makers," the Beta Israel community, and the Jewish North African celebration of Mimouna. Children and families also celebrated Purim at the PJ Library Purim Palooza, Israel's statehood at the annual Israel carnival, and Shavuot with Pride.

Men's Night Out This longtime program strives to create community through educational, personal, and social presentations and discussions. These monthly gatherings have fostered personal relationships, long-lasting friendships, and a connection to our Jewish community. The last couple of years have seen participation reach an all-time high as so many have been looking for renewed personal connections. Discussions ranged from personal stories, current events, and more in 2022.

Women's Engagement & Philanthropy

The last year was filled with programs that were open to all women to learn, find new friends, and hear about the Utah Federation's work as well as our unique programs for our philanthropic Lion of Judah cohort. We are thankful for the event organizers and hosts, as well as the many community presenters and organizations that made 2022 women's programming so engaging.

Pride Seder Over 140 people attended the 2022 Pride Seder. Led by Congregation Kol Ami Cantor Sharon Levy-Brown, the evening was filled with celebrating the freedom of our ancestors as well as civil right gains made by the LGBTQIA+ community. Invited speakers Kody Partridge and Laurie Wood shared their story of fighting for their right to marry in Utah, which led to Utah becoming one of the first states to recognize same-sex marriages. 02

Community Partners Against Hate By Jay Jacobson

In the last year, the Federation’s Task Force on Antisemitism and its Community Partners Against Hate have been responsive and proactive. We brought minority community leaders and elected and appointed leaders from city, county, and state government to the Eradicate Hate Global Summit in Pittsburgh. We plan to do that with even more leaders in 2023 when several of us are involved in planning and presentations. We updated and distributed our guide to Recognize, Respond, and Report Hate Crimes with cooperation and support from our SLC Police Chief, Mayor, and County Attorney. Recently, Federation Board member, Mike Zuhl, arranged a pro bono production of a video PSA that affirms no tolerance for hate, demonstrates our diversity, and the readiness of law enforcement to respond to reports of hate incidents. Both projects will be available on our Federation website. We responded to incidents of antisemitism and Nazi symbol vandalism in Park City Schools by meeting with the School District Superintendent, staff and Board leaders. We were in contact with the investigator who led the subsequent investigation of the District for the Dept. Of Education’s Office of Civil Rights. We arranged and attended a meeting between the Park City Police Chief and Temple Har Shalom’s Executive Director and interim Rabbi to discuss the response to antisemitic threats to congregants in schools or the community. We arranged or participated in similar meetings where the Police Chief and Mayor met with congregants, leaders, clergy, and religious school students at Congregation Kol Ami. When a prominent Utah CEO widely circulated a virulent antisemitic email rant, we attended a meeting with the Governor to discuss our efforts and ways the State could respond. We testified in support of a bipartisan Utah Legislative Resolution that condemned Antisemitism and acknowledged the value of Jewish communities in Utah. We speak out in the press and media when we learn of acts or threats that target Jews or any groups because of their religion, race, or ethnicity. We continue to work within school districts and public school programs to implement the ADL’s anti-bias curriculum and “No Place for Hate” program. We intend to keep our Jewish communities aware of Antisemitism and Hate Crimes in Utah and what we and our leaders are doing to reverse the rising incidence of hateful acts. FEDERATION ANNUAL REPORT 2022

Federation Launches Community Security Initiative Unfortunately, Jewish communities across North America have experienced a dramatic rise in antisemitic incidents, hate crimes, and targeted violence against its institutions. Sadly, 2021 saw the highest number of antisemitic incidents in the United States since the ADL began tracking in 1979. Sadly, these threats come from an increasingly diverse and complex array of sources. To be better prepared against the possibility of targeted violence affecting our community, the United Jewish Federation of Utah is pleased to announce that after significant planning it has initiated the process of hiring our first Community Security Director. Partnering with the Secure Community Network (SCN), the official safety and security organization of the Jewish community in North America, our security program will formally launch in October 2023. SCN and the Federation are recruiting a public safety expert and law enforcement veteran to serve throughout the state as our community’s full-time security executive. Our director will leverage the national resources and tools of SCN to develop and administer a comprehensive program that provides risk mitigation, security consultations, and trainings to members of all our Jewish institutions throughout the state. We are proud to invest in and launch this community-wide security initiative to help ensure the safety, security, and resilience of the Jewish community in Utah

Congregation Brith Sholem of Ogden, Always Evolving by Judi Amsel, Federation Board Member

Congregation Brith Sholem traces its history back to Jewish merchants who settled in Ogden in the 1870s. The congregation has been a continuous presence in northern Utah ever since, evolving with the times and the changing demographics of our Jewish community. We have been affiliated with the Union of Reform Judaism for about 30 years. Recent years have seen steady growth, especially among younger members. We currently count about 50 member households, and numerous unaffiliated Jews in the area also participate in our activities. Our members live as far away as Logan and Bountiful, with the majority in Weber and northern Davis counties. Our vision is of a community guided by the tenets of Relational Judaism – especially “audacious hospitality” – and we strive to provide a wide range of opportunities for our community to explore and grow as Jews. Our weekly Shabbat services and observance of many other Jewish holidays are largely layled but also supported by a student rabbi from HUC-JIR. Our religious school has multi-age classes from preschool through b’nai mitzvah. Adult education includes student rabbi-led sessions, an annual Hebrew reading class, and a recently launched Introduction to Judaism class for conversion candidates and members alike. Our sisterhood group has regular book discussions and enjoys occasional outings and craft projects. As a congregation, we gather for social events and service activities.

Brith Sholem has been the grateful recipient of UJF grant support for its religious school in the past and now for expanded programming under the rubric “One Big Mishpacha.” I was delighted to join the UJF Board to reciprocate the generosity that has been extended to us and to represent the interests of the Jewish community in northern Utah, and I am thrilled to see the better understanding and closer relationship that is already developing with the Board and UJF in general. Brith Sholem community gathers for Havdalah in Logan, Utah. 08

Beit Chaverim Jewish Community of Southern Utah By Lisa Bernath, Federation Board Member

We are a small, but growing Jewish congregation consisting of people from various levels of observance. Beit Chaverim began with only a few members 15+ years ago, holding lay lead services in private homes. Our membership is currently at 47 households/75 people in total. Growth has increased about 30% over the last seven years with the surge of increased population. Services are currently held in person once a month in the education building generously provided by the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church, although the goal is to have our own synagogue building in the near future. Our Rabbi, Helene Ainbinder, moved to St. George to retire and now selflessly gives of her time to the congregation and community. We additionally celebrate all Jewish Holidays together as a community in a larger space to accommodate the congregation and guests, hosting up to 80 adults and children. Our congregation provides an opportunity for not only sharing in our Jewish heritage and religious practices, but also making new friends in the community. We welcome all denominations of Jewish practice; however, we do utilize Gates of Prayer, the New Union Prayer Book which is a Reform siddur. I joined the Federation's board to provide a much needed link between the Federation, four hours to the north, and the community down south in the St. George area. This partnership will also bring more awareness and participation to the Jewish Community in this area. With connection and support we can bridge the current gap to include all of Utah, a win-win for all!
