The following reflections were lovingly submitted by families and friends to honor the memories of their loved ones.

Howard Asher Howard was a born and bred Philadelphian. Central High (195 class) and on to Wharton and UPenn where he swam butterfly for Penn varsity. He co-founded Asher&Co with his father, Abraham. The firm grew to be a large independent firm based in Philadelphia. Howard's commitment to Federation goes back to the earliest days of his marriage to Myrna Zeitlin Asher in 1958.

He served on many professional committees and always participated in their campaigns. He looked forward to chatting yearly to his "cards" and catching up with people he enjoyed. Howard is survived by his wife and children Noah Asher (Laurie Stein), Deborah (Scott Anderson),and Anthony (Elaine Berenson) and 7 exceptional grandchildren!

Myrna Asher, Wife Elaine Barg Elaine always put family first, starting with her parents Sam and Fannie Albert, and most recently her great-grandchildren.

Talented in needlepoint and cultivating cacti, Elaine loved sharing meals and laughs with family and friends. Elaine is dearly missed by her husband Alvin, children Ron (Debbie) and Jeff (Kathy), and her grandchildren Jason (Holly), Robert (Heather), Paula (Mike) Dziura, and Rachel, and her great-grandchildren, Mitchell, Ella, Justin, Lily, Dylan, Brandon and Demi.

Jeff Barg, Son Joseph Bender Doctor. Joe. Daddy. Grandpop. Tri-pop. Even with so many titles we can barely scratch the surface of this remarkable man.

Joe’s biography reflects the times in which he lived. Born in 1927 in Philadelphia, an only child of first-generation parents, his boyhood was shaped by the Great Depression. Despite his academic success at Penn, the quota system for US school admissions compelled him to attend medical school at McGill University in Montreal where he thrived both personally and professionally, graduating from school with lifelong friends, a love of travel, and a deep passion for medicine.

Upon returning to Philadelphia he attended a cousin’s wedding where he became enchanted by the sparkle of a soft-spoken art student, Maejean Swartzman.

Within a few short weeks their love blossomed and they soon wed, started a family, and opened an internal medicine practice in Norristown, earning Joe the respect of the community and the gratitude of his patients and their families.

In addition to an unyielding dedication to his family and profession, Joe Bender was always a gracious host, committed patron of the arts and local sports teams,

and a generous philanthropist to many organizations and causes. Joe lived every day of his life with grace, integrity, and kindness, modeling the values that his children have passed along to their children (and they, in turn, are passing along to their children): Always act with integrity; keep a sense of humor; enjoy the beauty that surrounds you; and be thankful for every day, every person, and every blessing.

Alison, Lauri, Robin, and Rodd, Children Sylvan Brandman Sye grew up in the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia. He attended Overbrook High School and Temple University before embarking on an advertising career that spanned more than 50 years. He is survived by his loving children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a WW II veteran having served as a captain in the U.S. Army and was a member of the 17th Airborne Division. At 104, he was a role model for physical fitness, exercising daily until the day he died and remains an inspiration to all who knew him. He loved to watch all sports but particularly the Phillies, 76ers, Eagles and professional golf. Old movies were another favorite. Throughout his life, he was an avid photographer, bowler and golfer. Even at his advanced age he looked forward to completing word puzzles in the Inquirer every day. He was cherished by his many friends, his wife, Ita, who passed away in 2017, his children and the rest of his family. He will be missed.

David Englander and Michelle Issa, Children Sandra Brecher Sandi was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio. She grew up surrounded by her many aunts, uncles and cousins and remained friends with them over the years. She met her prospective husband while volunteering at Wright Patterson Air Force Base nearby and after they married, they moved to Philadelphia. She raised four children and took great joy in all their accomplishments, including marrying and raising their own families.

During those years, Sandi volunteered with Women’s American ORT, was a preschool administrator at Temple Beth Hillel/Beth El and later went on to volunteer with Jewish Information Referral Service of Federation. After a few years as a volunteer with Federation, she was hired on to continue working with JIRS. Sandi was an independent woman who loved to travel. She completed several Israel missions with Federation as well, bringing family members with her each time. She was a friend of Kesher Israel Synagogue, loved sitting on a beach until sunset, and loved attending theater both in Philadelphia and New York. She was an avid follower of the financial markets and loved being with her family and friends.

Sandi sent all of her children to overnight camps and was particularly fond of the Jewish camps and their mission. As a result, one of the missions of her Legacy Fund is to provide scholarships for Philadelphia children who want to attend Jewish overnight camps.

Her favorite phrase at the end of each phone conversation was “and that’s my story”. She is missed by all who knew her.

Leslie Freeman, Daughter Stanley Brooks Stanley was the youngest child in a working-class Jewish immigrant family in Queens, New York. During World War II, Stan and his mother escaped the hot city summers by going to the Catskills. He enrolled in a volunteer program replacing the missing workers on local farms, thus awakening his interest in agriculture.

Stan attended New York City's only agricultural high school.

He later attended National Agricultural College in Doylestown, PA, established by Rabbi Krauskopf in the 1890s. Stan earned his BS in Food Industry in 1951; he met Mildred Mosco, a freshman at Temple University College of Education, during his senior year. In 1952, Stan was drafted into the Marine Corp to fight in Korea, but the war ended before his arrival, and the unit was sent to Japan. After the war, Stan and Mildred married in late 1954 and had three beautiful children. Mildred worked in the Philadelphia public school system while Stan worked for Perry Equipment, a family-run company that bought, sold, and refurbished used industrial equipment. There Stan used his knowledge of the food industry to help grow the business for almost 40 years.

The family settled in Cheltenham and joined Melrose B'nai Israel Emanu-El synagogue, where they both were involved for many years. Stan, in being a morning minyan, a member of the men's club, acquired the corn stalks for the sukkah roof and later became a co-president of the synagogue. Stan was always a people person. He gave his physical strength, intelligence, charm, and finances to support the community he loved. He had a natural passion for helping people grow and thrive. In his retirement, Stan became a docent at the Franklin Institute and then a caring clown at the local hospitals in Philadelphia, bringing both laughter and joy to many adults and children. He loved to pass on the light to those around him even when he could no longer be physically present.

Mildred Brooks, Wife and Fran Brooks and Sharon Brooks, Daughters Barbara G. Cohn Barbara and I met in Harrisburg, Pa and there was an immediate attraction to each other. We married when I was 34 and she was 31 and celebrated our 52nd wedding anniversary before she passed away this year.

Barbara was a legal secretary for many years for a prestigious lawyer and retired after we were married and moved to Bala Cynwyd. She was a consummate companion as my wife for fiftytwo years and mother of our two sons, Adam and David.

Barbara was active in our Synagogue in West Chester, Pa and was a Co -President of the Sisterhood. She was an avid tennis player as well as enjoying Bridge, crossword puzzles and any type of game. We called her "The Competitor".

Barbara was a charming person, made friends easily, had a wonderful sense of humor and is sorely missed by those who were close to her, especially me.

Sol I. Cohn, Husband

Norton “Sky” Cooper Norton had boundless energy, an optimistic spirit, joie de vivre, and completely creative and original way of thinking. He lived his life this way each and every day, and was incredibly loved. He was proud of his Jewish heritage and for the respect our father had for the Jewish people. His grandmother emigrated from Lithuania to Philadelphia in 1886 at the age of 16, speaking only Yiddish!

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Norton maintained a close relationship with his five siblings.

“He was a wonderful brother. He was an outgoing, warm person, and generous.

Our lives interlocked in many ways and we were very close in the last years -- we were both in Florida in the winters.” Joan Sall, Sister ““We had a great appreciation of each other, I looked up to him with enormous pride as my “big brother” and he would introduce me affectionately as his “kid sister”. He was especially connected to my mother, and I thought that was beautiful. He would call from wherever he was, and he would always bring her back a magnificent bottle of brandy.” Sally Cooper Bleznak, Sister Norton graduated from Cornell University with a BS in Chemistry. Although studying the sciences, his love was writing songs and plays, one of which is called “I Wish My Heart Could Paint”. He funneled his creativity into being a dedicated and hardworking businessman. For over 50 years, he was a leader in the spirits industry and he left a major mark. He had many business successes, most notably the creation of Chambord Liqueur, a black raspberry liqueur from France that was eventually sold to Brown Forman, the owner of Jack Daniels.

Norton was predeceased by his son Robert, and is dearly missed by all who knew him, especially his wife, Kim, and his children John and T’neal.

Bernard Edelstein My uncle, Bernard, was kind, sensitive and made my life better.

He was always there when I needed advice, especially after my husband passed away at a young age. He was close to his nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces. He was an avid lover of history, the arts and horticulture. He spent many years as a volunteer – giving tours of historical sites of Philadelphia and the Barnes Museum and he never missed the Flower Show. My memories are many and I will remember him forever. Hail to the king, the lover of the arts.

Rest in peace.

Barbara Straus, Niece Louise and Alfred Gilbert Louise was born in Dallas, Texas. When she was in high school, the family moved to Houston where she attended Lamar High School and then matriculated at an all-girls college, Stephens College in Missouri. Louise moved to Ridley Park, PA at the age of 19. She first sold cookbooks door to door, and had a short career in acting for a local theater group, always having the lead parts. She then worked for a real estate firm and moved from secretary to sales, obtaining her broker’s license. It was through her work at this firm that she met Alfred Gilbert and eventually married him. Having been raised in the South, Louise recognized

as a little girl that segregation was especially unfair. She and her sister were taught to respect our differences in life. Her upbringing was clearly felt in her generosity to so many important causes including our Jewish community Alfred grew up in West Philadelphia where he attended West Philadelphia High School. Upon graduation, he attended the University of Pennsylvania. His father, William, bought some modestly priced rental homes and as a teenager, Al collected the rents. This gave him a taste for real estate that led him into the business. He worked for just a few firms and then decided to branch out on his own. He was a true innovator in the business where he developed a new complex one story building housing a supermarket, specialty items, as well as clothing, drugs and hardware. Other major endeavors included the development of the first strip mall in the suburbs. He later went on to develop more of these centers, created a farmers’ market, acquired the Sheraton Hotel and later bought the Ben Franklin Hotel, renovating it into a large apartment building.

In addition to being a successful businessman, Al worked tirelessly for the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia and Israel Bonds. He received many awards for his tireless efforts. He was also a founder of the Yeadon Jewish Community Center.

Beth Reisboard, Daughter Carolyn and Edgar Goldenberg Our beloved parents, Carolyn and Edgar, first met at a Hillel dance at The Citadel in Charleston, SC and married the day after Ed’s graduation in 1954. After three years of active duty in the Air Force (plus another 19 in The Reserve with retirement as a Major), Ed brought his sweet, Southern Belle to Philadelphia to settle. He joined his father and brother in the family business, Goldenberg Candy Company, and worked as its Director of Sales for the next 46 years. He also started a candy brokerage firm, Chase Goldenberg Associates. Dad received many accolades and awards for his work in the candy industry, spearheaded candy sales abroad and was inducted into the Candy Hall of Fame in 2000.

Peanut Chews defined our family and despite the company being sold in 2003…it still does to this day.

Their family grew to include four daughters, sons-in-law, eight grandchildren and currently two great-grandchildren. Fifty-seven wonderful years of marriage sorrowfully ended when mom passed in 2011. Dad sadly departed us this past May. They lay in rest together where it all began…in Charleston.

Both of our parents were truly dedicated to Philadelphia’s Jewish community.

Mom, a social worker with a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania, worked for Jewish Family Service and HIAS as well as served on various charity boards. Dad was passionate about his fundraising efforts at Federation of Greater Philadelphia where he served as a Vice President and Chairman and was also a trustee and national Vice Chairman at the United Jewish Appeal. In addition, he sat on the boards of the Golden Slipper Club, American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, Jewish Community Centers of Greater Philadelphia, Gratz College, the Jewish Theological Seminary, his synagogues (Adath Jeshurun and Temple Beth Zion-Beth Israel) and more.

Dad was an avid tennis player, cyclist and even got his pilot license in his 70s.

Mom loved her books, long walks, and her beloved Dodgers. Together they made a powerful bridge duo. They also loved traveling the world together especially

to Israel where dad led many Federation missions and where a park is named in his honor in Philadelphia’s Project Renewal town of Ramat Hashikmah. Ed and Carolyn were a formidable, modest, and devoted team. They showed us how family ties, love and community are deeply bound. We miss them dearly.

Marcy, Mindy, Diane and Lauren, Daughters Ruth Golder Ruth, along with her husband Mervyn, was a major donor to the Jewish Federation campaign for over 60 years. Starting with the paper trades division, continuing through gifts at the Prime Minister’s Club/Ambassador’s Society level, the Golders were devoted, engaged & involved in their philanthropy & commitment to our Jewish community. Ruth was particularly proud to have been one of the first women in Philadelphia to become a Lion of Judah when it was inaugurated 50 years ago – she was of a generation that had a beautiful new suit or dress for the gala luncheon every year, often with fur-trimmed collar or cuffs!

Ruth was also one of the first women to endow her Federation gift, becoming a proud LOJE, knowing others would benefit from her legacy for years & years to come; in addition, she was a Woman of Vision, a member of ORT, as well as a devotee of the Philadelphia Orchestra & board member of the Mann Music Center. She loved music, particularly opera, art, antiques, fine dining and chocolate. A wonderful wife, mother, grandmother & cherished friend, Ruth was truly a “Woman of Valor.”

Ellyn Golder Saft, Niece Morton Goldfield Mort was born, raised and educated in Philadelphia. He graduated from Temple University and, at first, was a CPA. He then changed careers and became a stockbroker. He loved his work and didn't retire until the age of 88. He worked hard and played hard. Mort loved his family, spending time in Ocean City, NJ, traveling the world, playing bridge and going to Broadway musicals. His legacy will live on in his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and the students he helped at Temple University through the Goldfield Family Scholarship Fund.

Betty Goldfield, Wife Daniel B. and Florence E. Green In the summer after his freshman year of college, Daniel B. Green bought a $99 ticket on the Pennsylvania railroad and headed west. Dan stayed with family friends at his first stop in Chicago, where he met their daughter and his future wife, Florence (“Flo”) Weiss. After just a few dates, Dan and Flo were quickly engaged and set the wedding for February 17, 1946. Dan and Flo had a loving and timeless marriage which spanned over six decades as they shared in an abundance of commonalities in family heritage, values, and interests. Dan and Flo accomplished a great deal throughout their marriage, supporting and pushing each other every day to be better and achieve their many goals, including starting a family.

Dan and Flo were passionate about helping the Jewish community. They were founding members of Main Line Reform Temple where they attended services regularly, and Dan served on the board for ten years. Dan, and years later, his son Richard, was a board member of Federation Housing. With Flo joining Hadassah, Dan also got involved with the precursor to the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. For four years, Dan was the head of the Philadelphia chapter, an association that the Green family still supports to this day. With their involvement in many Jewish-based organizations, they fought to bring the community closer together and combat anti-Semitism and discrimination.

Dan and Flo had a fervent desire to help the community and make a substantial impact. Their memory lives on through their family, their community and the Green Family Foundation. They are always remembered and greatly missed.

Brittany Green, Granddaughter Florence Hanker We know that the two brothers, Louis and Benjamin Hanker, were on the 1920 census in Philadelphia, residing together, as an egg seller and rug seller, respectively. We think they disembarked from Odessa in Philadelphia. Florence’s mother, Lena, made her way from NYC to Philadelphia and she and Louis were married near the end of that 1920 census year. They had 3 children, Florence the oldest. They were members of many synagogues during their lives moving around in the city, but her final place of worship was Mikve Israel, where she joined after volunteering to work on Rebecca Gratz papers when the synagogue and Jewish museum were housed in same location. She was a civil servant in Marine Corp supply until her retirement —she argued for promotions and pay usually given to men, and won both in the patriarchal 1950s. After retirement, she studied accounting at Temple, acquired a real estate license and attended Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. She was a self-made millionaire through saving and a few shrewd business decisions. She reluctantly gave up her final Philadelphia residence at Rittenhouse Square—which she saved all her adult life to buy, having started out in a house near the zoo—at the age of 92 when we dragged her to Nashville, then Dallas to be with us so we could help her in her later years—though she was vibrant until the end at age 97. Florence LOVED her city Philadelphia.

Thank you and I miss visiting her in Philadelphia.

Pat Redifer, Niece Maurice “Murph” Hertzfeld Murph led an exemplary full life. Born in a Newark, NJ Irish catholic hospital in 1927, this is where he got his Irish sounding name, Murph. He became a successful real estate pioneer developing in areas no one else wanted to work, substantially changing many communities for the better. His professional legacy is found by looking at his pioneering development in University City, Franklintown/Art Museum area and Camden, NJ. He served as a mentor to many in the real estate community and was a leader in ethical and honest real estate development.

While his professional legacy is impressive, his most important and long-lasting legacy is found through looking at his charitable endeavors. He was a past

president of the Golden Slipper Club, and the western branch of the YMHA. When his middle son was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes, he look a leadership role as a founding member of the National Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and went on to become Vice President for membership of the newly formed organization and became its 3rd Chairman of the Board. He also was the founding chair of the PA Diabetes Task Force that led to a national model for states to help treat and assist diabetic children.

He was most proud of his four children with his wife of 67 years, Gladys Shapos; his children, Andy, Ilene, Rob and Bruce, who followed his lead in becoming innovative leaders in their professions; and his beloved granddaughter, Sarah, who recently graduated high school and was accepted to one of the finest art colleges in America.

A mentor to many and loved by all, he will be remembered for his passion, kindness and compassion.

Bruce Hertzfeld, Son Meta and Ken Jacoby Meta and Ken were not originally from Philadelphia. Neither had roots here but eventually made Philadelphia their heart and home and supported the Jewish Community. Meta supported the Soviet Jewry efforts back in the 1970s and 1980s, traveling to Russia a few times lending a hand to their critical needs. In addition, Meta devoted many years working tirelessly for Gratz College in their efforts to record survivors’ stories so we all “never forget.” She instilled her Jewish values in her children and grandchildren, hoping they too would pass these values to their children. The two of them will be remembered for their generosity to many charitable institutions, including the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia.

Beth and Bob Stack, Jane and Stuart Siegal, Marcy and Paul Cohn, Children and Spouses Jeanne and Richard “Dick” Kaskey Jeanne and Dick were married for 47 years. Dick attended the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School of Business and was founder of the Jenard Corporation, a firm that made heat-sealed vinyl products. He operated the successful business until 1994.

Jeanne attended Temple University, majoring in Communications, and successfully operated a business with her dear friend and partner, Rhea Foster. Art Tours Associates provided daily bus trips to museum collections.

Together, Jeanne and Dick enjoyed their homes in Wynnewood, Ventnor and Palm Beach. They will be remembered for their generosity to many charitable institutions including: The Abramson Center, The Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, the National Liberty Museum and the University of Pennsylvania, providing the funding for a major renovation of the University’s BioPond, which was rededicated in 2001 as the James G. Kaskey Memorial Park, in honor of their late son, Jimmy.

Millicent Druker and Georganne Kitei, Friends

Judge Leon Katz Judge Katz was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Olney High School and went to Temple University where received his Master’s in Physiology. At graduation, he enlisted in World War II and was in Air Corp. When he returned home, he went to Temple for Law on our wonderful GI Bill. After graduation, he worked in the DA’s office, and soon after, opened his own law firm with friends from law school. After several years as a successful lawyer, he ran for Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in 1979 and won. He was ultimately elected as a Judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Philadelphia. When he retired, he did arbitration and mediation and was kept very busy. He had a strong feeling for being Jewish and did what he could for his people. Leon had a large and loving family.

Sandra Katz, Wife L. William Kay, II Bill was a real estate developer and philanthropist, an avid outdoorsman, a championship level golfer, and a lifelong skier. He traveled extensively, playing golf throughout the states, the British Isles, and Europe. For over 60 years, Bill loved skiing in the French Alps and Colorado Rockies. Bill developed single-family houses on the East Coast as he began his real estate career. He went on to build, buy, and manage numerous apartment communities in and around both the New York suburban and Philadelphia, PA markets. For over 60 years, Bill took great pride as owner and operator of Drexelbrook Apartments, a sprawling community in Drexel Hill, PA. Bill received his Bachelor’s degree from Cornell University’s School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) in 1951. He provided significant leadership to Cornell as a Presidential Counselor and life member of the University Council. He was a key leader for the Class of 1951, serving as Class President from 2006-2011.

Bill served on advisory councils for the University Library, ILR, and Outdoor Education. Bill was a founding member of the Real Estate Advisory Council.

Cornell recognized Bill with the Frank H. T. Rhodes Exemplary Alumni Service Award in 1997, and by ILR with the Jerome Alpern Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000. Bill made significant commitments to the university at critical times. In 2006, his dedication to university housing led to the naming of Kay Hall, honoring four generations of his family at Cornell, including his father, who graduated from Arts & Sciences in 1922. Bill loved to return to the first-year student residence every August to welcome new students and their families during orientation.

In 2019, Bill established the L. William Kay II ‘51 Family Scholarship. Bill loved to help. He served on the Cornell University Council and was a founding member of the Cornell University Real Estate Council. Bill was a proud founding member of Watermargin, a co-ed fraternity, which still exists on campus today.

Locally, he was a founding board member of the Brandywine Health Foundation and board member of Delaware County Memorial Hospital. He supported the McNeil Children’s Library housed at the Brandywine Center in Coatesville, PA, the Foundation for Delaware County, and the Chester County Community Foundation. Bill loved his dogs and was a decades-long contributor to the Chester County SPCA. He supported the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the American Cancer Society, the United Jewish Appeals, the United

Way of Southeastern PA, and many other organizations. Bill was predeceased by his daughter Jennifer and is survived by his loving family, including Mrs. Brit L. Kay, his children, Bill, Tom, John, Jim, Rob, Martin, Caroline, and Henrik, their spouses, 25 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

The Kay Family Albert Kitchman Albert was recognized by everyone for his great generosity. He was quick to help people solve a wide array of problems. Also, he loved to offer excursions on his boat. In addition, Al regularly bought and distributed food to people who needed it. Weekly, he purchased large challahs for Shabbat and smaller loaves that he took around Ann’s Choice where they lived, giving the bread to people who were confined to their apartments.

Al was very proud of his son Leonard, daughter-in-law Rhona, and granddaughter Allison. He remained single after his first wife Elaine died and later married Chickie Tucker, whose spouse had died, too.

Al was a self-made man, who started and ran Modern Vac and Sew, which employed a very large number of people at a time when jobs were much needed in Philadelphia. He was an avid and experienced boater and, together with Chickie, an enthusiastic world traveler.

At the age of 91, Albert died peacefully in the home that he really loved at Ann’s Choice.

Dr. Shelly Tucker, Daughter Chickie (Rose) Kitchman Chickie, beloved wife, mother and friend, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, July 30, 2020. Chickie had a true zest for life, inviting everyone to come laugh and have fun with her.

Chickie owned and ran five clothing stores called Chickie’s. She danced and taught dancing, worked with the charity Because We Care, ran an extensive stock investment group, was an avid bridge player, studied Yiddish, and wrote poetry. In addition, Chickie was a world traveler and an accomplished boater. Her love of life and exuberance for it even extended to every dog she ever saw.

In addition to her friendly waves and welcoming smiles, she was an extremely caring wife, mother, and friend and an exceedingly generous person. Chickie is truly missed.

Dr. Shelly Tucker, Daughter Eliott Klein Our cousin Eliott was a unique individual: smart, funny, and incredibly positive. He graduated from Central High School in the class of 211, then on to Dickinson College and from there to the University of Pennsylvania where he received his law degree.

He maintained deep friendships with his classmates throughout his lifetime. Professionally, he worked most of his career at the Pennsylvania Securities Commission, where he retired as their

general counsel.

One of the traits that is most memorable about our cousin was his unwavering optimism. He had over 30 years of life-threatening illnesses, but always took each situation in stride. We never once heard him say ‘why me’. He was focused on the quality of his life, and not his longevity, so he could enjoy the things most important to him: friends, tennis, travel and collecting Asian Art. Eliott’s mother, Sarah Klein was an active volunteer with Federation for many years, giving of her time, energy and talents. We are certain that the generous donation that Eliott made was in recognition and in memory of his beloved mother.

Susan, Marvin & Stephen Klein, Cousins Meyer Kolodner Meyer passed away April 25, 2020, at the age of 96. He was married to Sarah, nee Saphir, for nearly 60 years. They had three children, Janet, Elliot/Hillel, and Stuart, and seven grandchildren, and there are now 3 great-grandchildren, 2 of whom Meyer had the delight of interacting with. He worked at the Philadelphia Navy Yard for many decades and was a pioneer in using Fresnel lenses to guide airplanes landing on aircraft carriers. He was generous with his time, money, and imagination. He was content with what he had; he drew enjoyment from the little things in life.

Janet Kolodner, Daughter Elaine Goldberg Landau Elaine grew up in Wynnefield, Pennsylvania. Elaine was a cheerleader at Overbrook high school. Upon graduating top of her class, she was awarded a full scholarship to University of Pennsylvania. In the summer of 1948, she met the love of her life Emanuel (Manny) Landau on the beach in Atlantic City. In 1950, the two were married and blessed with 69 wonderful years together. After purchasing their first home in Broomall, they had two beautiful children, Michael and Diane. Close to her faith, Elaine raised her children in a Kosher home. Later, the family moved to Merion where Elaine became active in various Jewish organizations. At Har Zion Temple, Elaine sat on the Executive Board, fundraised for the Torah Fund, and was President of the Sisterhood.

During her time as Sisterhood President, Elaine brought Mickey Marcus’s wife Emma to speak to the synagogue.

With a deep passion, Elaine was very involved with the arts. As a docent, she shared her love of the arts with many people at the Barnes Foundation. A season ticket holder for many years, Elaine enjoyed the Philly Pops, the Theater Guild, and the Walnut Street Theater. She was an avid bridge player and always relished working on a stimulating crossword puzzle. Elaine and Manny appreciated new experiences as they traveled all around in their airplane. Always up for a challenge, Elaine enrolled in a pinch hitter course for emergency aircraft landing procedures. With her grace and elegant style, Elaine launched a gift boutique, Something Special by Elaine in Olde City. Specializing in high end gifts, her store was frequently patronized by many including the crew from channel three news.

In her Corvette, Elaine and her dog, Denise, would drive to work daily, where the two could be found in her shop. Serving as Chairperson of the Marks Colorectal Surgical Foundation at Thomas Jefferson University, Elaine delighted in leading the organization. In the 1990s, Elaine was blessed again with three grandchildren who instantly stole her heart. Nothing brought her more joy than to spend time with her grandchildren Hunter, Marnie, and Margaret Elaine (M.E.). Until passing, Elaine sat on the board of trustees at Perelman Jewish Day School with Manny.

Along with their son, they established the makerspace laboratories at both Perelman campuses. In addition, they also sponsored the computer lab at Barrack Hebrew Academy.

Family was very important to Elaine. Always the consummate hostess, she loved getting the family together for all the Jewish and secular holidays. Her hospitality was legendary. Elaine loved all food, but she was especially fond of hot fudge nut sundaes. Always with a kind word, Elaine had the ability to make everyone feel special.

Hunter C. Landau, grandson Elayne Lemanow Elayne enjoyed learning everything she could, and most of all, cared deeply for others. A graduate of Olney High School and Temple University, Elayne was actively involved in her synagogue Melrose B’nai Israel Emanu-el. Elayne worked at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society Philadelphia, and was actively involved as a volunteer with the Jewish Family and Children’s Service, which honored her as one of two “Volunteers of the Year” in 2012. Elayne also enjoyed public speaking and even won a Toastmasters-sponsored oratorical competition.

Another of Elayne’s favorite pastimes was enjoying the outdoors. Elayne’s experience with a hiking and outdoor club took her to scenic destinations throughout the eastern United States and led her to meet Andy. He became her partner and the love of her life. Elayne’s friends appreciated her sense of humor and love of dancing. A true extrovert, Elayne greatly enjoyed socializing with others. I personally remember and appreciate how Elayne took genuine interest in my college coursework and professional career, as well as how supportive she has always been. I also enjoyed how Elayne was fun to be around and appreciated the stories she would share from her travels and outdoor adventures. Elayne is greatly missed.

Nate Dorfman, Nephew Alan Lipkin My father, Alan, was a lifelong Philadelphian. Raised by his mother in West Philadelphia with extended family close by, Dad attended Philadelphia Wireless and had a long career as an electronics specialist with General Electric, focusing on aerospace communications. His passion for tinkering and repairing carried over outside of work - at home he loved taking things apart and putting them back together, and he was an amateur (“ham”) radio builder and operator. He had a great sense of humor, loved comedy and classic movies, and

was a talented cartoonist.

Dad married my mother, Sarah, in 1981 and they settled in Northeast Philadelphia, where they were always active with their synagogue. Giving was a regular part of their lives and he gave both time and money to Jewish causes in Philadelphia. He served as a board member of the synagogue Men’s Club and worked on the family tree with the Jewish Genealogical Society of Philadelphia. He saw the best in others and cared deeply for his family and friends. I am proud to be his daughter and miss his even-keeled warmth every day.

Suzanne Lipkin, Daughter Dorothy Litz Born in Philadelphia on 19Dec29, Dorothy met Jack singing their hearts out in the choir and they became a duet on September 16, 1951. Passionate about her family, encouraging to her friends, she enjoyed many craft activities and always had an orange juice pop at the ready to soothe the soul. Her memory lives in us, as well as her recipes that continue to provide sustenance.

Marc Litz, Son Milton London Milton celebrated his 100th birthday at the Quadrangle with friends the year before his death. He was a devoted brother to his sister Helen all of her life, and to her daughters Barbara and especially to her daughter with Special Needs, Geraldine.

He was an avid golfer and a longtime member of Springfield Country Club, where he continued to enjoy playing into his 90’s. He was an exceptionally kind man with many good friends.

Charles Plotnick, Estate Attorney Marvin Lundy, Esq. Marvin was the youngest of 8 children, born 26 years after his oldest sister. He grew up in the apartment above the butcher shop his parents owned in a poor Philadelphia neighborhood of mostly eastern European immigrants. 80 plus years later he would die, having lived most of his adult life in an apartment overlooking Rittenhouse Square, as a most elegant man, who often appeared in the society pages. But he never forgot where he came from, and he often publicly referred to his Marshall Street roots and his sisters and brothers who sacrificed to give him the opportunities to achieve his successes.

He was by trade a lawyer who became a champion of the downtrodden, and a voice for those who often were marginalized and cast aside. He stressed to them the importance of family values and education as a means to advance the next generation and often referred to his own humble roots as an example of what could be achieved.

While he never had children of his own, his many nieces, nephews and their children became the children and grandchildren he never had, providing advice, demanding educational excellence and always, impeccable manners. And, of course, he was devoted to his life partner, Curtis Roth., who recently also passed

away.

But, above all, he cherished his Jewish roots and that community to which he devoted most of his philanthropy, serving on many boards in leadership positions.

He believed it was important to support the institutions that shape our Jewish lives, his synagogue, the Jewish day schools and, of course, the Federation.

Our family continues to honor his legacy by demonstrating his high standards, by treating everyone with respect, and by showing kindness and generosity to those less fortunate in life.

L. Leonard Lundy, Nephew and Business Partner Irma and Louis Malissa Irma and Louis were committed to supporting the Jewish Community, especially in Philadelphia. They were passionate about transmitting Jewish values to their children and then to their grandchildren and great grandchildren who continue to live them. It was only natural that they would choose, together, to leave a legacy gift to JFGP. They loved being Philadelphians and were certainly concerned about the well-being of Jews In Philadelphia, in Israel and around the world. Their family is heartened that their love, and devotion will continue in perpetuity.

Phyllis Finkelstein, Daughter Betty Lou Malmud Betty was born in Philadelphia in 1927. She grew up in the Wynnefield and Merion area and attended Temple High School and Temple University. In 1949, Betty married Leonard S. Malmud and they moved to the Wyncote until they moved to center city in 1984.

For sixteen years Betty ran a successful needlepoint business, Needlepoint Corner. It was a business that started in her basement and grew so large that the neighbors complained about the traffic. At that time she opened a store. She was the first needlepoint business in the Philadelphia area. The business ran until she moved into center city.

Following in her parents’ footsteps (George and Mary Sall), Betty Lou was very involved in charitable organizations. She was a Founder and President of Thrift Shop Associates, a member of the Women’s Leadership Board and a co-chair of the Pacesetters. In addition to her Federation activities, Betty was a Founder and President of B’nai Brith Four Freedoms Chapter and was involved with Friends of Moss, Paley Day Care, Golden Slipper Women, a life member of the Albert Einstein Auxiliary, a president of Phila. Heart Institute and President of Elder Craftsmen. She has been honored for her volunteer work and Pennsylvania and Jefferson Hospitals.

Elizabeth Rultenberg and Jo Ann Malmud, Daughters

Leah Mazer My mother, Lee was a sweet, kind, intelligent, loving mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend. She always made you feel good about yourself when you were with her. She was an excellent role model for the love and commitment for continuous learning and growing. She was enthusiastic about every activity she was involved in and she put all of her talent and energy into them. Her background as an elementary teacher prepared her for this throughout her life. She set a beautiful example for her family for how to live a good, productive, fulfilling, honorable life. We all miss her, think of her often, and her memory will always be a blessing.

Susie Levitt, Daughter Miriam Polsky What can I say about our Mother? I am not even sure she would even want to be recognized tonight. To her to be able to give was something that came from her heart. She was a woman of valor.

Family meant everything and we could not have had a better role model. She lived her 96 years with love and laughter.

Joan Polsky, Daughter Henry R. Rudolph Henry was the only child of immigrant Jewish parents Bella Sailor and Samuel Rudolph. He grew up on Mildred Street in the heart of South Philly. An exceptional student at South Philadelphia High School for Boys, he earned a full scholarship to Temple University.

After graduating, he was offered a partial scholarship to study law at The University of Pennsylvania but could not afford the remaining tuition, so instead sat for his CPA exams.

Henry was a gentle soul with a big heart who expressed his love of others through philanthropy. He supported charities which combat prejudice, foster mental health, help immigrants and advocate for the underdog. He showed up one day at Federation’s doorstep eager to make a gift and was immediately befriended by Betty Milgrim, who worked in charitable giving; their friendship would continue until his death in 2020.

Henry loved his Phillies and Eagles. He was also an opera aficionado who frequented the New York Met. He delighted in international and domestic travel.

He studied history, art and politics and could recall and discuss obscure facts until the last months of his life. Because he was unpretentious and keenly interested in others, he could talk with anyone about anything.

He was a cherished and loyal friend and we will miss him enormously.

Richard & Elizabeth Nassau, Friends

Ronald Rubin Ron was an amazing visionary businessman and real estate developer who changed the skyline of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia business district over a 60-year career including the renovation and rehabilitation of the Bellevue, the Gallery and so many other marvelous projects.

But, more importantly Ron was admired by all of us for his character, his value system and his characteristics. He was a great man in every sense of the word. He was loving, smart, funny, thoughtful, humble, gentle, fun-loving, generous beyond compare, compassionate, a marvelous listener, a man of great wisdom, a friend of unparalleled loyalty and a great storyteller. He was a man’s man; a guy’s guy who never forgot where he came from. I have been privileged to meet a few great men in my life, but Ronnie was simply the best of the great men I have known. His goodness, his morals, his ethics, his love for family defined him. His humility, warmth and sense of humor were beyond compare. He was, simply stated, a world class mensch. Ron’s generosity knew no bounds and he was an incredible supporter and leader for Jewish causes locally, nationally and internationally. If Ron were here today and you asked him to sum things up, I think he would say: “Life is amazing. And then it’s awful. And then it’s amazing again. And in between the amazing and the awful it’s ordinary and mundane and routine. Breathe in the amazing, hold on through the awful, and relax and exhale during the ordinary. That’s just living a heartbreaking, soul healing amazing, awful, ordinary life. And it’s breathtakingly beautiful.” Ronnie Rubin’s life was breathtakingly beautiful!

Steve Cozen, Friend Rona Schnall In her twenties, Rona was already an accomplished journalist when her career cut short because of a drunk driver. She suffered severe, life-altering injuries. Rona's tremendous desire, strength and fortitude motivated her to continue to be active throughout the rest of her life in things that mattered to her.

By virtue of her mobility limitations, she became involved with the rights of the disabled. And Rona, being Rona, her involvement took the form of peaceful protests of civil disobedience. One such example was a protest in Washington DC where she and others chained themselves to the White House fence to bring awareness of the lack of access for the disabled…things like curb cuts, ramps at restaurant entrances, places for wheelchairs at movies, etc. Rona was arrested but she couldn’t be charged as the police were unable to take her to jail. In what has to be the ultimate irony, it turned out that the jails were not handicapped accessible.

In addition to her support of the disabled Rona was very proud of her Jewish heritage and always made a point no matter where she was to be observant of all things integral to Judaism. While she opposed bigotry and hatred in all forms, she particularly advocated for an end to anti-Semitism, and it is her wish, and her honor, to support the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia in its efforts to eradicate anti-Semitism.

Ilene Schnall, Sister

Frances Hazel Schwartz Frances aka "Gig" was larger than life. Those are the only words that truly come to my mind when I think of her. But as I dig deeper I can find stories, feelings, and other words for her and the life she led. For all the years she knew me and I knew her, she brought with her light. I remember looking into her eyes and seeing a spark. I didn't know what it was when I was younger but now I know what it was, it was her spirit, her light and her heart.

People say that she was so caring that it made her a wonderful volunteer, but honestly I think it was her outlook on life. Everyday was a gift to her and every moment among family, friends and loved ones was the best moment of her life.

She was someone who never stayed bored. She volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, Jewish War Veterans, Jewish Federation of Philadelphia and many other organizations that she felt needed.

She was my role model and the greatest influence in my life. I am forever grateful to have her as my aunt. I know that no one that knew her will ever forget her.

Her name "Gig" was the name I called her when I started to talk and it stayed forever.

Frank Goldman, Nephew Suzanne (Fink) Scott Mom was a force of nature and a fountain of creative ideas throughout her 95+ years. She had enormous energy and a passion for life. She was known for her big heart, deep soul, sense of fun and adventure, and abiding thirst for knowledge.

Though she knew deep sorrow with the tragic illness and death of her daughter Pamela at the age of 25, she remained eternally optimistic. She consistently spread joy, especially when hosting legendary gatherings and had a competitive spirit, whether playing a mean game of tennis or a round of Boggle. She was a loyal friend, a lifelong student and treasured every sunset, especially by the water. Our brilliant and beautiful mom fiercely loved and protected her family and friends, gave wonderful hugs, wise advice, and made everyone around her feel valued.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, she went on to Wellesley and Radcliffe Colleges and eventually landed in Philadelphia where she met and married in 1950 her beloved husband of 56 years, the late David Gerald Scott. Together, they raised a family of four (Kathy, Craig, and twins, Patricia and Pamela) on Fisher Road in Jenkintown, PA. Beyond her talents as the quintessential mother, Suzanne dedicated herself to volunteer work as an active PTA member, for the Mental Health Association, JEVS, Abington Hospital and wherever else her prodigious talents were needed. She was editor of the popular and beloved Easy Does It Cookbook, published in 1963 by the Philadelphia Section of the National Council of Jewish Women. Throughout her life, she was an advocate for the underprivileged, the under-served, youth with special needs, or anyone who just required a helping hand. After earning a master's degree in Guidance and Counseling and certification as a Clinical Psychologist at Temple University, Suzanne worked for 11 years as Director of Admissions and Staff Psychologist at Wordsworth Academy. In 1976, she established Academic Advisory Service, her own private practice as an independent educational consultant where she

provided educational and psychological guidance to countless students and families for more than 30 years. She was considered a "founding mother" of the Independent Education Consultant Association (IECA) and was revered by her colleagues across the country. In 2007, after the death of her dear husband, Suzanne moved to The Hill at Whitemarsh, where she gained new friends, pursued far-ranging interests and helped lead the creation of "The Treasure Chest" thrift shop where community residents donated items to raise funds for scholarships for young Hill staff members. Suzanne read voraciously and was politically active until her final days.

Craig H. Scott, Son David J. Steinberg David grew up in Philadelphia, attended Central high school, Dartmouth College, the University of Pennsylvania Law school and NYU law school for his masters in Taxation. The main focus of his practice was entertainment law where he was loved by all who created the Sound of Philadelphia. An avid tennis player, David loved playing in tennis tournaments. Together with Vic Kasser, his tennis partner and long time friend from his high school days, the duo enjoyed national rankings in Men's Doubles.

We met at Camp Lindenmere in 1956, married two years later and began raising our family. As our three children, Rob, Jeff and Gail grew, he introduced them to tennis and his love of board games. We have five grandchildren, all of whom live in Philadelphia. David was thrilled to be able to attend their sports events, religious ceremonies, plays and "Grandparent Days," always arriving early to ensure a front row seat.

Chaile Steinberg, Wife Lee and Al Toll Lee and Al spent their whole lives in Philadelphia. They were the children of Russian Jewish immigrants and members of families for whom the motto “Family First” reigned supreme. Lee and Al were devoted to their parents, aunts, and uncles, and in turn gave their all to their daughters, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Respect, dignity, a passion for delicious family meals, and unflinching love were at the heart of their souls. A thirst for knowledge imbued them with a rare openness and welcoming spirit to others.

Jewishly, these passwords to happiness were evident in Lee and Al’s elaborate Rosh Hashanah and Seder meals for both of their families; Lee’s advocacy of civil and human rights, and for the State of Israel, through American Jewish Congress channels, personal letters to elected officials, and opinion editorials to Philadelphia newspapers; and Al’s long membership in the early morning minyan at Beth Tefillah of Overbrook Park.

Lee and Al were wonderful role models as partners and parents. Al was a prototype liberated husband and father, washing dishes, pots and the kitchen floor, as well as bathing the kids nightly. He was a great goofball and planned fabulous road trips across the country, helping everyone learn about different cultures and environments. Lee was the consummate gourmet chef, party

planner, educator and financial manager. She organized unique interactive parties and designed clever costumes for her daughters. Her creativity, inventiveness and skill with numbers were remarkable.

In their own ways, Lee and Al were lifelong learners. From her scholarship from West Philadelphia High School as the top female student in her class, to the University of Pennsylvania, Lee went on to work in the publishing and public health fields. She became a demon scrabble player, crossword puzzle whiz, and poet, while making sure her daughters learned lessons well, through weekly trips to the library and attentive review of their school projects.

Al read the entire Book of Knowledge encyclopedia in his youth. After college he began his career as a chemist for Dutch Boy Paints. During World War II he worked on developing magnesium for bombs, and served as a naval officer in the South Pacific. Ultimately Al joined his family’s business as a grain and feed broker for producers and distributors from the Midwest to the East Coast. He read 3 newspapers a day, was well known for his extensive map collection, and knew details about many places in the world that most people never heard of.

A love of music, the arts, and travel marked Lee and Al as unusually worldly people for their time. They delighted in visiting art museums, historic sites, national parks, and cultural gems in England, France, Israel, Italy and Spain. The sound of classical music filled their home. They regularly attended Philadelphia Orchestra concerts for over 30 years, and were devotees of theater shows on Broadway as well as downtown Philadelphia. Lee and Al treasured exploring worlds beyond home which enriched their lives, while sustaining a passionate devotion to their family till their final days.

Carol Bress and Terry Toll, Children Irving Wyman Irving was a man of intelligence, creativity and faith. As an avid reader, he enjoyed keeping up with current events. Armed with a quick wit, he could hold his own in a spirited debate. He was also known for his artistic abilities, expressed in the form of modern metal sculptures that he created for family and friends.

As Irv's earthly life drew to a close, he spoke of his unwavering faith and acknowledged God's sovereignty in all human affairs. He was honored to bequeath his estate to the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia.

Marlene and Norman Zarwin Our parents created a beautiful life together and received numerous accolades over many decades. Both were involved with and held positions of leadership with numerous Jewish and civic charities. They believed in education, dignity for our community’s elderly and helping the citizens of Israel. Their service to Federation, Golden Slipper Club and Charities, Hadassah, Magen David Adom and JNF stand out as examples of their concern for those less fortunate.

After a life of hard work, dedication and care for our Jewish community in Philadelphia and Israel, we know it gave them great pleasure to provide a lasting gift to Federation to help ensure it is there to care for those in need in the future.

Stephen, Amy and I are privileged and humbled to be a part of their enduring legacy. L’Dor v’Dor – from generation to generation.

Debbie Zarwin Rose, Daughter Berton Zaslow Bert was born in Philadelphia in 1930. He grew up in a loving, Jewish, hardworking home with his Russian-born parents and two older sisters. Bert loved to learn and he learned a lot from his father. At the age of twelve, Bert’s dad hired a private tutor to prepare him for his bar mitzvah.

When Bert complained to his dad that he was wasting his money, his father said, “Money spent on education is never wasted,” and Bert always remembered that.

Bert went on to graduate from the Pennsylvania College of Optometry. He was in practice as an optometrist for more than forty years. Throughout his life, Bert was active in his synagogue. He was president of Emanuel synagogue for four years. Later, he sang in the men’s choir at Beth Sholom. Bert was charitable. He especially liked to donate to Jewish causes and Israel. Bert had many interests, including watching sports, listening to opera, reading, traveling, and taking courses at Gratz College.
