Welcome from the CEO Daniel Carmel-Brown, Chief Executive, Jewish Care

A

s you know, I usually like to keep my introduction to Careline upbeat.

I truly believe that positive thinking creates positive action. Yet the tragic events in Israel we have seen since 7 October and all that unfolded after, along with the reaction in this country and across the world, has caused distress for us all and it has felt hard to be positive.

I have spent considerable time visiting resources, reassuring residents, members, staff and volunteers and I can honestly say that it has never been more important than now for us to continue to support each other, and especially to support those in our community who rely on us.

We have seen an increase in the number of people turning to us for support. Those who live alone and feel isolated, including our Holocaust survivors who access our specialist services, never thought they would witness the rise in antisemitism that we have seen again.

Many of our staff and volunteers of all faiths have been impacted directly. I am proud that we are a beacon of the best example of communities of all faiths and none, coming together with compassion to support the Jewish community and one another, as one family.

Whilst it feels hard to be celebratory, we have, in this issue of Careline, a great deal of good news to share. We have now formally received planning permission to make our vision a reality in delivering our new Redbridge campus. This is possible thanks to the enormous generosity of the Jewish community, especially our cornerstone donors, Lord Sugar and his family, together with the Ronson family via The Gerald and Gail Ronson Family Foundation. You can see our plans for the new Redbridge campus inside.

We are also excited to share news that Jami and Jewish Care are becoming one. The demand for Jami’s services to support people whose mental illness and distress makes everyday life a struggle, has grown exponentially.

Integration will bring many opportunities for Jami, Jewish Care, and the whole community, including better use of community resources.

We strive to enable older people to live meaningful and purposeful lives each day. We are rightfully proud when others recognise this. Our Kun Mor and George Kiss Home care home at The Betty and Asher Loftus Centre is the first to get DementiAbility certification in the UK. The report praised our dedicated staff who have created an enriched, stimulating, person-centred and homely environment. This benefits all the residents, especially those living with dementia.

We couldn’t do all we do without our inspiring volunteers and as you will see inside, we shone a light on our volunteers at the Volunteer Awards, showcasing the very best of their achievements.

The work of our fundraising committees, who have held some incredible events over the past months, has never been more important than it is now to ensure we can keep our vital services running for those who rely on us. We’ve seen the milestone of the 100th Business Breakfast raising a record-breaking £120,000, as well as a special Holocaust Survivors’ Centre Dinner raising over £150,000.

Our young supporters inspire us with their commitment, doing marathons and skydiving to raise funds. It’s amazing to see our young leaders and volunteers coming up from the roots of our MIKE youth leadership programme in Redbridge, with a new branch growing at Sandringham.

The people we support are truly the stars, with their fascinating life experiences. You can read heart-warming stories about our residents in the Lifesongs movie project and in our centenarian’s celebrations.

We treasure the special moments we create that nurture our emotional, cultural and spiritual life. I hope the ways we support people to celebrate personal and Jewish milestones will inspire you.

By the time you read this we will have held numerous Chanucare parties across our services, which will have brought much-needed joy and light at this dark time in the world and in the calendar year. We rely on your support to make this possible, so please do consider donating to our Chanucare campaign.

Planning Permission received for Jewish Care’s first-class Redbridge Campus We are excited that what was once a dream, will now be a reality.

A

s the whole community knows, Jewish Care has long been committed to building this development in the East London and Essex area.

For us, this is not just about physical infrastructure, but the development of the right facilities and programmes to meet current and future demand for all Jewish Care services in the local community. The site in Redbridge will comprise a wonderful, first-class, modern and fully accessible community centre space that will house a centre for people living with dementia along with a 66-bed care home, replacing our Vi & John Rubens House care home in Gants Hill.

As well as building a beautiful, purpose-built care home and community centre space, this site will also act as Jewish Care’s campus in Redbridge, housing our social work team, and meals-on-wheels hub, in addition to providing communal space.

Thanks to the incredible commitments from Lord Sugar and his family, together with the Ronson family via The Gerald and Gail Ronson Family Foundation, this much needed care and community campus is now closer to becoming a reality for the local community. These two outstanding displays of generosity are the cornerstone donations for the project. The Sugar family have been long-standing supporters of Jewish Care, showing unwavering commitment to the organisation over many decades by generously supporting Jewish Care’s services in Essex and East London, in addition to their ongoing support for the wider organisation. Gerald Ronson CBE and Dame Gail Ronson DBE too, have been avid and incredibly generous supporters of Jewish Care showing exceptional commitment over many years.

Alongside these commitments and funds already raised by

“With so many Jewish families using our services in the area, we will be able to give this long-established community a first-class care and community campus designed to meet their needs, now and in the future. We will also continue our commitment to ensuring that the development is as environmentally friendly and sustainable as possible.

RAGS, the Redbridge Aid Golf Society, we have been hugely supported by Hamberley Developments Limited and Patron Capital as our Development Coordinator.

We have now launched a campaign to raise the remaining £5 million from the local community, which is expected to be needed to complete the project. Jewish Care is grateful for the key role the local community has also played in showing their support for the project during the planning application process and hopes this will continue through future campaigns.

Following the tender process, we are in the process of appointing a construction company who are scheduled to commence on site in January 2024. Since we received planning permission, we have been working hard to safely and securely demolish the site. The aim is to open the campus in mid-2026.

Jonathan West, Jewish Care’s Director of Legal Affairs, Property and Procurement said: “We were delighted to have received planning permission in October for this new first-class development in Redbridge and are incredibly grateful to our generous donors for their commitments. The East London and Essex community have been fundraising for this project for many years and this long-held vision will now become a reality.

“THIS WILL BE THE FINAL CAMPUS AND WILL COMPLETE JEWISH CARE’S STRATEGIC VISION WHEREBY MULTIPLE CAMPUSES ACROSS LONDON AND THE SOUTH-EAST SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY.” “The memories made at Redbridge Jewish Community Centre are so important to us and to the community, so we have carefully preserved the memorabilia from decades of community life at Redbridge JCC, also known to many as Sinclair House or ‘Club’ to many, which will be displayed at the new Redbridge campus when it opens.

Jami and Jewish Care Becoming One 11 years ago, communal charities Jami and Jewish Care came together to create a single mental health service for the Jewish community.

The Boards of Trustees of both organisations have decided that now is the right time to fully integrate their services with each other.

T

his move will bring many opportunities for Jami, Jewish Care, and the whole community, including better use of community resources. Above all, it will ensure that the needs of the community continue to be met effectively, and the future of Jami’s vital mental health services are sustainable and secured for the future.

Full integration will also bring greater resources to mental health, focused governance, a stronger capacity to raise funds, and broader promotion of Jami’s services to the community.

Jewish Care’s intention is to transfer across all Jami’s 92 members of staff to the employment of Jewish Care under TUPE regulations, subject to the normal consultation process, and to ensure that every single one of Jami’s 280 volunteers continues in their vital roles.

Jami Chief Executive, Laurie Rackind, will step down from his role after 17 years of leading the charity. Laurie has transformed Jami into a leading mental health provider within the Jewish community and a recognised provider of

Around the world of Jewish Care 01. 91-year-old Holocaust survivor, Ivor Perl BEM, marked the publication of his book Chicken Soup under the Tree at the Holocaust Survivors’ Centre at the Maurice & Vivienne Wohl Campus with Life President Lord Levy, Sir Eric Pickles, friends, volunteers and staff and four generations of Ivor’s family.

02. Abigail Saltman, MIKE youth leadership programme graduate skydived to raise funds for Jewish Care’s new development in Redbridge.

She is this year’s winner of The Saul Keene Award for Excellence in Leadership and Young Volunteer of the Year in our Volunteer Awards.

03. Chaps That Chat Supportive Communities Tea Party group get together regularly at Redbridge Jewish Community Centre to socialise, discuss current affairs, and hear fascinating guest speakers.

04. 60 Jewish Care supporters teed off at the annual golf tournament, raising over £25,000 for Rela Goldhill at Otto Schiff care home for adults with physical disabilities and sensory impairments.

05. Lydia Seager was one our six incredible athletes who ran 13.1 miles through London in The Big Half Marathon for Jewish Care. Two participants ran their second marathon in gratitude for the care their relatives received in our care homes.

06. 170 guests had a fun evening at the RJCC Redbridge Football Quiz with 17 teams competing to raise funds for services and the new first-class Redbridge development.

07. During Hospice Week, Jewish Care hosted a collaborative event with the North London Hospice.

08. Friends of Sidney Corob House held an evening with Dame Maureen Lipman at The Betty and Asher Loftus Centre raising over £7400 for recreational activities and outings for residents at the care home for adults with mental health needs.

09. Residents at Otto Schiff care home enjoyed taking part in the Dance for Life programme, for people living with dementia using music to encourage movement, expression and participation.

Mike Freer, MP for Finchley and Golders Green and Parliamentary Undersecretary for the Minister of Justice, was welcomed by CEO, Daniel CarmelBrown and Care Manager, Tosin Lawanson, when he visited Sunridge Court care home and chatted to staff, residents and volunteers, answering their questions about life as an MP.

11. Friends of Stella & Harry Freedman House raised funds for care home activities at the annual garden fete. Everyone enjoyed a cream tea and entertainment with an opportunity to buy handcrafted items from the stalls.

12. Guests enjoyed a fundraising screening of the documentary, Fiddler’s Journey to the Big Screen.

13. Across Jewish Care, we honoured those who fought and lost their lives to protect our freedom. Veterans and residents, Leslie Bernard, at Wolfson Assisted Living at Sandringham and Phyllis Burnley of Rosetrees care home laid wreaths on Remembrance Sunday.

01. Mazel Tov to Mark Rowe, a carer at our Stella & Harry Freedman House care home who was pleased to have his Bar Mitzvah when he put on Tefillin for the first time with Rabbi Junik, our Spiritual and Pastoral Lead. He said, “My grandma was born in Poland and although I wasn’t brought up in a Jewish way I always felt a strong connection to my Jewish ancestry, so it felt very natural to put on Tefillin.”

02. It was a hive of activity and a feast for the senses as we celebrated Rosh Hashanah this year with parties and beautiful festival meals on Yom Tov. At The Zalman and Ruchi Noé Centre for people living with dementia at the Sandringham campus, members enjoyed receiving sweet gifts and had a fascinating visit and talk by beekeeper, Ian Shenkin.

Proceeds of the sales of the handmade works of art will raise funds for Jewish Care.

Holocaust Survivors’ Centre Dinner raises £150,000 to support Holocaust survivors and refugees

O

ver 220 guests attended the Holocaust Survivors’ Centre Dinner at St Johns Wood Synagogue for an evening kindly hosted by Rachel Riley MBE, who introduced guest speaker, Dame Maureen Lipman, actress, writer and comedian, who also generously donated her time.

The Centre relies entirely on donations for its vital work supporting 300 Holocaust survivors, refugees and their spouses through social, therapeutic and outreach programmes.

Guests gave a standing ovation to 91-year-old Holocaust survivor and educator, Ivor Perl BEM, after a warm and honest conversation with Dov Forman, who has a TikTok account with his great-grandma, Holocaust survivor, Lily Ebert BEM, also a member of the Centre.

Ivor said, “The Centre is even more important to me and fellow survivors as we get older. The memories of the Holocaust never leave you. The staff and volunteers, who I can only describe as angels, offer us so much care and support, a place to be together and an abundance of love.”

Linda Bogod, Holocaust Survivors’ Centre Dinner Committee Chair, gave an emotional appeal at the Dinner, saying, “My involvement with the Centre is very personal, it is a service that is extremely close to my heart. I am immensely proud to be here to help raise vital funds for this very special place."

100th Business Breakfast with Chancellor of the Exchequer

O

ver 220 people enjoyed attending our 100th Business Breakfast with keynote speaker, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, The Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, raising a record-breaking amount of over £120,000 for core services.

The breakfast at Mansion House was generously sponsored by

JB Drax Honoré. Since the first Business Breakfast 30 years ago, the event has raised a staggering amount to help provide care and support to older people in the community.

The Chancellor said: “It is a pleasure to support Jewish Care at their 100th Business Breakfast. I’d like to pay tribute to the organisation, to the staff and the volunteers who do truly outstanding work each day supporting older people and their families relying on the charity’s vital services in the Jewish community.”

Jewish Care On Air Podcast and residents on TikTok

W

e have launched a new monthly Jewish Care On Air podcast with industry experts engaging the community in conversation about community, health and social care. The first podcast features a lively chat with our CEO, Daniel Carmel-Brown and Dalia Gurari.

We’ve also been connecting with a younger audience on TikTok. Our most popular videos are our ‘Then and Now’ series, with our residents holding a photo of themselves in their youth.

This series has racked up 36,500 views so far and comments are filled with praise and compliments. Our ‘Day in the Life’ film with amazing volunteer manicurist, Ruth at Rosetrees care home, went viral.

“This put a big smile on my face this morning. It is so beautiful to see photos of these lovely people,” wrote one of our fans online.

Shining a light on our Inspiring Volunteers Celebrating the successes, commitment, dedication, and love our volunteers bring to Jewish Care

I

t gives us great pleasure to recognise the wonderful contributions our volunteers bring to Jewish Care and the remarkable work they do everyday that make such a difference to the lives of our clients, members, residents and tenants,” said Jo Selwyn, Department Manager of Volunteering at Jewish Care’s Betty and Aubrey Lynes Annual Volunteer Awards.

Valerie Nead (below) was this year’s winner of the Sonia Douek Award for Excellence in Volunteering presented by Richard Shone, Director of Community Services, Volunteering, Social Work & Hospitality. “I’ve always believed in staying positive,” says Valerie, “I just live each day and dance is a fabulous way to feel we’re alive, not just existing.”

Otherwise known as the Dancing Queen, Valerie volunteers twice a week at Jewish Care’s Michael Sobell Jewish Community Centre at The Maurice & Vivienne Wohl Campus in Golders Green. She began volunteering nine years ago. A year later she was diagnosed with stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Inspired by the joy volunteering brought to others and to herself, Valerie has continued her volunteering.

Jojo Dando and Lauren Rose, Community Centre and Outreach Coordinators, say, “Valerie lights up the room and has a way of making each person feel special. The embodiment of Jewish Care’s values, she extends kindness and support to members, staff and volunteers and gets the members chatting and dancing in a way which is fun, therapeutic and stimulating for their wellbeing.”

The uplifting evening was hosted by comedian and script writer, Ivor Baddiel in the Wohl Synagogue at Jewish Care’s Betty and Asher Loftus Centre. Judges chose 17 award winners from 120 nominations, representing the breadth of roles of Jewish Care’s volunteers. Addressing the 125 guests, Jewish Care’s Chair, Jonathan Zenios, presented awards, saying, “The Volunteers Awards are a celebration of the successes, commitment, dedication, and love that our almost 3,000 volunteers bring to Jewish Care.”

Husband and wife duo, Marian and Stephen Shelton (above), were presented with the ‘Distinctively Jewish’ award recognising many years of volunteering at Vi & John Rubens House care home. Jacklin Stephenson, Activities Coordinator, says, “They offer their time by doing Kiddush on Friday night and Service on Shabbat morning in the Synagogue. Stephen and Marian have a great attitude that spreads positivity and motivation and a strong sense of compassion, dedication and commitment to the residents.”

Geoff Wrightman won the Unsung Hero Award winner, commended for commitment to delivering Meals on Wheels to older people, he also drives Jewish Care’s minibus for Redbridge Jewish Community Centre members. Naomi Shanaan-Eisen, Meals on Wheels Lead, says, “We simply adore this mensch and know we can always rely on his help and support.”

Instrumental in reaching out to the local authority, Geoff helped to ensure that local volunteers in Redbridge have dispensation to park on single yellow lines for 20 minutes while delivering meals.

Volunteer Awards

“I’m very honoured and grateful to receive this award,” says Geoff, “but also very surprised! I do what I do every day because I want to and I’m very appreciative.”

Winner, Stephen Wiener (above right), was presented with the People’s Choice Awards by CEO Daniel CarmelBrown, chosen by community centre members, residents, and tenants for his volunteering at Jewish Care Explore where Stephen supports service users with technology. Francis, who lives at Pears Court Retirement Living, said, “Stephen showed me so patiently how to connect my mobile and devices to Bluetooth. He has such a calming effect and was only too pleased to help. He is always happy to have a friendly chat which is a real bonus.”

Abigail Saltman, 18, winner of the Young Volunteer of the Year Award for her dedication as a MIKE youth leader, has also received The Saul Keene Award for Excellence in Youth Leadership at the MIKE Awards. She took commitment to greater heights by skydiving to fundraise for the new Redbridge Development.

Winners of the Young Volunteer Group Award, JCoSS Year 8 students (now year 9) (below right) volunteered at The Sam Beckman Centre for people living with dementia. Head of Informal Jewish Education at JCoSS, Hannah Barth, said, “It’s been amazing to see the relationships grow between the school students with members,

Stanley Cohen won the Champion of Volunteering Award for engaging synagogue volunteers in festivals and shabbat at The Betty and Asher Loftus Centre. Benefits volunteer, Stephen Clandfield received the Making a Difference Award together with Michael Sobell Jewish Community Centre volunteer minibus driver Howard Israel.

Dedicated befriender Jasmine Bandel received the Service User who Volunteers Award at the Holocaust Survivors’ Centre and Beverely Ross the Volunteer Management Award at the Ronson Family Community Centre at Sandringham.

Lifesongs the movie with our residents Innovation is one of our core values and this is reflected in some of the amazing creative projects we see across our services.

R

esidents at Jewish Care’s Anita Dorfman House care home at Sandringham have relished reliving their musical memories in interviews with professional artist in residence and filmmaker, Bob Karper, who interviewed 50 residents and staff about important musical moments in their lives.

Pawel Moczulewski, Jewish Care’s Innovation and Activities Lead for arts, disabilities and dementia, says, “Bob weaved the interviews together into a wonderfully creative film putting our residents in the spotlight, sharing their memories, photos and songs that mean the most to them.

The residents chose the title and collaborated on the final edit of the film too. There were laughter and smiles from the audience at the screening as memories flooded back, creating a sense of shared cultural connection.”

One resident, Rena shares, “I was lucky enough to grow up with music on both my father and mother’s sides. My mum and my aunt performed at the Palladium and Dad used to play at the musical halls with a washboard, spoon and saw, he had a lovely voice. It was marvellous, you just couldn’t believe anyone could do that.

“As a girl, I would sing Don’t Sit Under the Apple Tree and later I sang in my father’s pub. I loved Gershwin and Cole Porter especially Every Time We Say Goodbye.

“One day, after the war, my uncle came over and told me we were going to see someone special. It was Sammy Davis Jr, he was amazing.

Bob says, “It’s been an absolute pleasure to talk and to see them transformed as they share their favourite musical memories with me, and with family members who have joined us,” he continues.

“When I was talking to Ruth Eva it was easy to tell she had been a performer. She just opened up on camera and her life has been fascinating.”

A talented dancer, Ruth Eva, now 91, went to Israel from Germany in 1932. She began to dance when she was young; first ballet and then modern dance, accompanied by a pianist in the studio where she practiced.

Her gestures are graceful as she watches clips of famous performers dancing her favourite pieces and she movingly shares her experiences and deep love for music and performance.

“My favourite piece to dance to when I was young was Strauss’ The Blue Danube. Later, I became a professional dancer in Tel Aviv. I danced Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, it felt like it was from another world. When I married, I took my husband to see the Israeli Philharmonic and brought my children up with classical music.

“When I moved to London in 1966 I taught dance and movement at the Royal Academy of Art for 20 years and was lucky enough to teach many stars, including Kenneth Branagh, Imelda Staunton and Ralph Fiennes.”

Another resident, Stella (left), shares her memories of Sunday afternoon dances at Maccabi, “It was all jive and jazz, it was lovely,” she says. “Later, we all screamed when we went to watch Sinatra as though he was The Beatles, we were young!

“Then my late husband and I loved to dance together to Sinatra songs. We saw Frank Sinatra live at the Midnight Matinee. It was such a wonderful experience, it was totally dark, someone saw us to our table with a torch, we ordered drinks. Then there were drums and Sinatra came out and sang. We also went to Las Vegas and saw Elvis.”

Casey Jolly, Lifestyle Programme Facilitator at Anita Dorfman House care home, added, “The screening was a truly special occasion. It felt so important and right that we all came together to celebrate the memories and unique experiences of our residents in this beautiful film.”

his year we celebrate 40 years since our impressive MIKE youth leadership programme began. MIKE, which stands for Motivation, Inspiration, knowledge and education, has created many of today’s inspiring community leaders and lay leaders, and continues to grow the leaders of the future.

Alumni include Jewish Care’s Deputy Chair, Gayle Klein and CEO Daniel Carmel-Brown, JW3’s Raymond Simonson, New Israel Fund’s David Davidi-Brown and JBD's Lisa Wimborne, all chief executives in the community. Graduates in senior roles at Jewish Care include Richard Shone, Ellisa Estrin, Jamie Field and Committee member, Ian Grant.

In its anniversary year, we are delighted to be expanding the programme with its roots in Redbridge by opening a new branch in South Hertfordshire/Stanmore at Jewish Care’s Sandringham.

Centenary Birthdays B

orn on 10 September 1923, Dr Joseph Saperia celebrated his 100th birthday surrounded by family and friends at the Michael Sobell Jewish Community Centre at the Maurice and Vivienne Wohl Campus.

Attending over the past two years has helped Joseph follow his own advice for a long and healthy life. He says, “I think it’s important to stay slim and active. I still walk to the community centre from Hendon twice a week, which is a 30-minute walk!”

Joseph has huge amounts to celebrate in his life with four children, 11 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren.

With a combined age of over two centuries, Esther Collins, 107, and Miriam Sandler, 101, feel they too have much to celebrate in life. They were delighted with a birthday tea at our Supportive Communities Tea Party in Northwood last month with cake, balloons, and an abundance of joy.

101-year-old Miriam, who has two children, four grandchildren and nine greatgrandchildren, says, “I had a wonderful day celebrating our birthdays together. The hosts made it an amazing day. I can’t thank everyone enough for the tea party!”

Giving advice to young people, 107-year-old Esther explained, “Whatever knocks at your door, accept it. The good and the bad! Ensure you make the best out of what you’ve got, and that will be enough.”

Talking about happiest memories, Esther told us, “In 1940, I married Archie and together, we had two sons, five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. I am very blessed.”

Giving in Memory to honour a loved one

ir Leigh Lewis wanted to honour and remember his wife, Lady Susan Lewis z’l, and show his gratitude for the warmth and end of life care that she received at Anita Dorfman House care home at Sandringham.

“From the very first day Sue came to live at the care home the Jewish Care team welcomed us and looked after her with immense kindness,” says Sir Leigh.

“Sue passed away very peacefully at the home when the moment came, with me by her side, surrounded by all the staff who cared for her and supported our family. I will be forever grateful that this was the case.

“Jewish Care could simply not have done any more to make the last three and a half months of Sue’s life as good as they could possibly be, for us both.

“As a way to remember her and express our gratitude, I chose to put a leaf on the Tree of Life and a plaque on a bench where we would sit outside whilst I read to her.”

llisa Estrin has been appointed as our new Director of Fundraising & Marketing and Olukemi Jeboda will be our new Director of People.

Ellisa Estrin has been Jewish Care’s Director of Marketing, Communications & Customer Engagement for the last five years, working in fundraising and marketing roles at Jewish Care over 14 years and previously, at prominent agencies and national charities, including NSPCC, RNID, and Guide Dogs for the Blind.

“I’m really excited about my new role leading our Fundraising and Marketing team. In these challenging times it’s never been more important for us to come together as a community, to support those who rely on our critical services,” says Ellisa.

Our new Director of People, Olukemi Jeboda begins her role in February. A highly experienced human resources professional, Olukemi comes to us from the Langley Trust as Director of People. She has worked in charity, care and housing sectors, including for 13 years at Hyde Group, a G15 housing association.

“I’m looking forward to meeting everyone at Jewish Care,” says Olukemi.

“Supporting people is something that I am really passionate about, and I am excited to work for an organisation with values of care and respect for others.”

Birthday Twinning

Y

oung-at-heart centenarian Henny Franks was delighted when younger birthday celebrants, Nicole Gilbert, Debra Binder and Rachel Miller asked to twin their birthday together and invited their friends and family to donate to Jewish Care in lieu of gifts.

With a combined age of 100 they joined Henny on a chauffeur-driven trip around London, kindly donated by UK London Chauffeur Hire. Henny reminisced as they drove through town and did carpool karaoke together to Abba songs. Henny said, “Thank you, it was one of the best days of my life!”

A veteran, Holocaust survivor, and grandmother of three, Henny arrived in the UK on Kindertransport at 15. She also celebrated her centenary with family and friends at the Holocaust Survivors’ Centre at the Maurice & Vivienne Wohl Campus, which she describes as a second home. On the same day, Henny received her war medal from AJEX, appearing on TV and in press.

CEO, Daniel Carmel-Brown, says, “Henny is inspirational. She has achieved so much in her 100 years. Twinning your birthdays to celebrate with Jewish Care is a very meaningful way to mark a special occasion and to shine a light on older people we support.”

T

he day Margit Woodhouse’ z’l passed away at the age of 99, six weeks before her 100th birthday was the same day that Margit’s son, Anton, marked his bar mitzvah.

Anton put on tefillin for the first time at Margit’s bedside, in a special and spiritual moment supported by the end of life care team at Stella & Harry Freedman House care home.

Though Margit had lived a full and happy life surrounded by family with two children, eight grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, she had arrived in England aged 15 on Kindertransport from Berlin in April 1939, following the kind invitation by the late Baron Elwyn-Jones QC and his wife, the artist Pearl Binder z’l.

Miraculous and magical moments at Jewish Care Josephine says, “We are all very much aware that we exist because our mother was miraculously saved by a very kind young English couple, who both wanted to save the life of a young Jewish girl. But my mother‘s relations sadly perished in the concentration camps including Margit‘s brother, Egon, who died on the death march shortly before the end of World War II. “Due to my mother`s past,” Josephine explains, “everything Jewish had been deliberately suppressed in our family. I think this was to protect my mother from emotional turmoil after her experiences in Nazi Germany and to protect us, her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

“So, it was a very special and spiritual moment for us all and it provided closure for my mother when she was able to see my brother, Anton, put on Tefillin and have his Bar Mitzvah at the care home on the day of her death.”

“Six weeks later,” Josephine continues, “on what would have been her 100th birthday, the care team

helped us to arrange a special memorial ceremony for my mother’s relatives to celebrate her life at The Betty and Asher Loftus Centre. Myself and four out of five of my children read Tehilim Psalms and also marked our Bat Mitzvah’s that day.”

Rabbi Junik, our Spiritual and Pastoral Lead, said, “these are miraculous and magic moments. Being able to reconnect people with their Jewish tradition and spiritual life and celebrate important milestones, especially at the end of their life, is very important and meaningful to those we support, like Margit z’l, Josephine and her family.”

A: It is good to plan, and recognising that you and your partner may need more support in the future is very positive. The adjustments you have made to improve your quality of life in your home sound like they’ve been helpful to maintain your independence safely up until now.

The next step could be to contact the Jewish Care Direct Helpline to discuss your needs. They may refer you to our Social Work and Community Support Team, to provide some emotional and practical advice and support, as you navigate the path to find the right care for you.

Our Living with Jewish Care team can also support you both to explore residential care options, helping to maintain your wellbeing and independence with the reassurance of knowing there are dedicated, caring staff on hand to support you.

Q: I’m feeling overwhelmed by life at the moment and am finding myself withdrawing from my friends. I’m also very low in energy and can’t cope with work and family. I’ve been to my GP, who has given me antidepressants, but feel I could benefit from support from someone who understands what I’m going through. Can Jami help?

A: We’re sorry to hear you’re going through such a tough time and would be very happy to have a conversation with you. We would need to talk to you first to gain as much information as possible because we recognise that everyone is different and don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach. We may offer you an assessment to determine what support may benefit you. This could include Talking Therapies, our new counselling service offering a non-judgemental, safe space for you to talk about anything with a therapist. Alternatively, we may recommend one-to-one support from a Jami peer support worker, who has lived experience of mental illness, and can offer emotional and practical guidance. Everyone is also welcome to come along to our Head Room café in Golders Green. It’s a warm and welcoming space where you can enjoy a coffee with a friend, or join one of our free daily groups and activities, offering mutual care and peer support. We can also signpost you to other relevant services we believe could be helpful.

A: It’s understandable you are concerned about your mum’s wellbeing, and it sounds like now is a good time to investigate choices for independent living with support.

Q: My 90 year old mother recently had a fall which has led to her being in hospital and then coming to live with me. I think she needs more care and rehabilitation and am not sure where to turn.

A: I’m sorry to hear that your mother has had a fall, which sounds like it has had a stressful impact on you both. It’s good that you have asked to identify support and you can call our Jewish Care Direct helpline to talk to one of our advisors about the best ways to support you both. Our Family Carers Team can also give you 1 to 1 or group support.

It may be that short-term respite placement in one of our care homes is a good option for a few months for your mother to receive personalised care whilst she recovers her strength after the fall.

Our Jewish Care Direct helpline advisors will take the time to listen and understand your needs and with her permission can refer you to our Social Work and Community Support Team, who can provide support and advice and help you to navigate the right support or connect you with our Living with Jewish Care team to give advice on respite care. You could check with our Benefits Team whether there are Department of Work and Pensions welfare benefits that your mother might be entitled to, such as Attendance Allowance.
