The iconic entertainer Fyvush Finkel, who passed away while this brochure was going to press, was scheduled to perform for JArts in a special Catskills Cabaret on October 27th. From a childhood on the Yiddish stage to his many award-winning roles on Broadway and TV, we were excited to present Fyvush and saddened by his passing. May his memory be a blessing and a reminder of how important it is to share Jewish cultural treasures like Finkel with audiences while we can.

CATSKILLS MEMORIES WITH PHOTOGRAPHER MARISA SCHEINFELD

LA MUSICA POR LA PAZ (MUSIC FOR PEACE)

Just in time for Rosh Hashanah — the birthday of the world according to Jewish mystics — we’ll have a fascinating conversation about science and faith with MIT’s Dr. Jeff Hoffman and Rabbi Leslie Gordon.

Dr Hoffman, NASA’s first Jewish astronaut, has logged more than 1,211 hours in space, and was the first person to read Bereisheit (Genesis) in space. Rabbi Gordon is an accomplished educator whose work has focused on all phases of family life at InterfaithFamily/Boston, the Jewish Discovery Institute, Mayyim Hayyim, and several area synagogues.

Born in Brooklyn but raised in the Catskills, photographer Marisa Scheinfeld’s latest project, The Borscht Belt: Revisiting the Remains of America’s Jewish Vacationland chronicles the region. This exceptional portfolio of photographs captures these legendary resorts in their current condition and includes commentary from such Catskills stars as Mel Brooks, Freddie Roman, and Larry King. Through slides and stories, Marisa will share the personal inspiration and impact of this project. Bring your Catskills stories to share, too, and enjoy a smorgasbord of smoked fish, blintzes, salads, and sweets that would make any Catskills chef proud.

Considered one of the greatest cellists in history, Pablo Casals (1876-1973) was a lifelong advocate for human rights. When the fascist Franco came to power in Spain, Casals went into exile and declared that he would not play music during Franco’s rule. In exile, Casals developed a fascinating relationship with the Jewish community and Israel. Visiting Harvard scholar Pedro Reina Pérez, an award-winning historian, will share his deep interest in Casals’ relationship with the Jewish community. Adding to the evening, Israeli-Mexican cellist Michal Shein of Boston’s Discovery Ensemble will perform Casals’ music and participate in the conversation.

HERE I AM: READING & CONVERSATION WITH AUTHOR JONATHAN SAFRAN FOER

SHABBAT & SCHMOOZE! HEBREW LETTER JEWELERY MAKING Spend the morning with PJ Library and JArts with interactive games for the kids, and coffee and conversation for the adults. Laura Mandel will teach us how to make a custom piece of jewelry using Hebrew letter metal stamps and wire. End the morning with Shabbat singing, challah, and grape juice for all. For young children up to 3 years old.

Celebrate Here I Am, acclaimed author Jonathan Safran Foer’s first novel in 11 years. Through reading and conversation, Foer will touch on the plot and themes of the novel - a story of a fracturing family in a moment of crisis as a catastrophic earthquake sets in motion a pan-Arab invasion of Israel. Foer is best known for his novels Everything Is Illuminated (2002), Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2005), and for his non-fiction work Eating Animals (2009).

Join JArts, Kitchen Kibitz, and Ganei Beantown in a delicious celebration of the fall harvest. Created by Chef Ivan of Branch Line, we’ll experience Sukkot through a three-course meal: salad with etrog dressing, family style herb roast chicken, roast cauliflower, seasonal vegetables, harvest punch, and more. Rabbi Elan Babchuck of Clal-The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership will share insight into the holiday as we dine on the patio (à la sukkah), savor the seasonal bounty, and explore the rituals and mysticism of the Sukkot harvest festival.

LOUISE NEVELSON: LIGHT & SHADOW A CONVERSATION WITH LAURIE WILSON

Jewish animators and composers played in early pop culture. Co-presented with the Boston Jewish Film Festival.

How does a Yiddish-speaking young girl in Maine become one of the most important artists of the 20th century? Learn the incredible story of Louise Nevelson’s life, inspirations, and impact on the art world with art historian and psychoanalyst Laurie Wilson, who conducted hours of interviews with Nevelson and her circle. The event includes an exploration of Nevelson’s Sky Covenant sculpture at the entrance of Temple Israel, one of only three public Nevelson works in Massachusetts.

THE 613: PAINTING A PATH TO UNDERSTANDING MITZVOT “The painter Archie Rand likes to work big,” said the New York Times. “He tackles big themes.

But nothing prepared the art world for ‘The 613,’ his series of 613 paintings, one for each Jewish commandment.” As Rand states, “There are Hasidic stories of children who whistle in synagogue because they don’t know how to pray or of soldiers who can only recite the alphabet knowing that heaven will rearrange their spoken letters into prayers. ‘The 613’ is one of those whistles.” Join us as Rand explores pieces of his 613 works and his endless efforts to find artistic inspiration in his own Jewish identity.

Explore the MFA and enjoy holiday themed performances with contemporary klezmer by Ezekiel’s Wheels, chamber music by the Niggun Ensemble, and a camp style sing-a-long with cantor and clarinet player Becky Wexler. Craft projects and stories for the whole family, gallery talks, a newly-commissioned virtual reality demonstration, and special dance performances all make this the most cultured and innovative Hanukkah party in town.
