Did you know? The Dwares JCC is a division of the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island... What is the Jewish Alliance? Today’s Alliance serves to enrich the quality of life for Jews in Rhode Island, in Israel, and around the world. The Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island meets this goal through philanthropy, planning, education and wellness opportunities, community relations, and volunteer recruitment and training. The Alliance convenes agencies, synagogues, and organizations to address issues of common concern. Together, we transform Jewish tradition and values into action. Whether caring for people in need or nurturing and sustaining Jewish identity for future generations, this is where our community comes together as one; where we, as a community, develop innovative responses to critical, often life-threatening issues; where anyone who needs help can get it; where an energized Jewish community grows and celebrates; and where everyone, including you, can make a difference right now. Inspiring and energetic, New York-based chamber music ensemble’s SHUFFLE concert changes the rules of performance as we know it. Conceived by SHUFFLE’s artistic director and pianist, Eliran Avni, while exercising on the elliptical machine at the gym, his MP3 player jumped from a Pretender’s song to the first movement of Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony, nearly causing him to lose his balance… and thus, the idea for SHUFFLE concert was born! Unique to SHUFFLE performances is the manner in which the program is selected. The audience is invited to actively participate in the selection of works to be performed by choosing from a menu of over 30 works derived from 15 different styles, ranging from solos and duos, to trios, quartets, quintets, and sextets. Genres vary from classical, baroque, and romantic, to jazz, pop, and Broadway. The result is a highly engaged audience and a high energy performance. Price: $25 | Members: $18

A Night at the Deli: Dinner and a Film | Ages: 18+ Join the Dwares JCC for a Night at the Deli, featuring a pop-up deli restaurant by Ben’s Best from Queens, New York, serving fresh made-to-order deli sandwiches, matzo ball soup, kasha varnishka and more! While enjoying your meal, producer, Erik Greenberg Anjou will be speaking about his film Deli Man and the many deli men he met along the way. Following dinner enjoy a screening of Deli Man followed by a Q & A with Erik Greenberg Anjou, and Jay Parker, owner of Ben’s Best. Deli Man is the story of effusive and charming Ziggy Gruber, a third-generation delicatessen man, owner and maven (as well as a Yiddish-speaking French-trained chef) who currently operates one of the country’s top delis, Kenny and Ziggy’s in Houston. Kenny and Ziggy’s has been touted in press reviews ranging from “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” to the L.A. Daily News. Jay Parker is the third generation deli owner of Ben’s Best delicatessen in Rego Park, New York. Ben’s Best has continued to flourish and has reaped endorsements from many high profile personalities both within New York state and beyond. Why? Because New York is the pastrami capital of the world, and Ben’s Best deli offers delicious, old fashioned, dark, and spicy pastrami that is still cured by hand and in barrels. Ben’s Best is under the supervision of the Va’ad Harabonim Lemeshmeret Hakashrut, and maintains a level of kashrut under the Halacha of orthodox Jewish law. Dinner at the pop-up deli will also be under the supervision of Rabbi Barry Dolinger. The Jewish Alliance Annual Campaign raises money to support Jewish life in Rhode Island, in Israel, and across the globe. Honoring the Jewish values of compassion, generosity, and responsibility, our donors make it possible for us to fund more than 300 programs and services worldwide. In fact, many of the opportunities listed throughout this guide are made possible by your support to the Annual Campaign. To keep our community strong, we sustain the people who make it great - through every stage of life. Together, we give our children an excellent education that is built on a solid foundation of Jewish identity. We share Jewish culture so that we as a people will remain valued and relevant. We take care of the most vulnerable among us, including our seniors, by providing meals and emergency funding. We continue to fight anti-Semitism across the globe and assist Jewish communities, such as those in the Ukraine and Cuba, facing turbulence and upheaval. In addition to the Annual Campaign, which sustains our community from year to year, our Philanthropy Department also raises funds for major endeavors. One of those projects is Living on the Edge, our anti-poverty initiative that assistss those who are trying to meet basic needs and help them work towards a sustainable solution. We are also in the midst of a capital campaign to renovate and modernize the Dwares JCC in order to continue serving the community. In all of these ways, and more, we are making a difference in the world. Learn more at jewishallianceri.org. Double Chai Society is a giving initiative through the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island which includes community members between 30 – 50 years old who have generously donated $360 or more per household to the Jewish Alliance Annual Campaign. This film is co-sponsored by Lichtenstein Financial. Steven Loring received his MFA in Social Documentary Filmmaking from the School of Visual Arts in 2012 and focuses on creating films that examine the cultural and interior lives of unfamiliar and overlooked populations. Loring has done some work with short films, and movies-of-the-week, yet The Age of Love is his first feature film. This modern folktale will resonate with those who love crafts, anyone who encounters someone with physical differences—and with everyone who has ever lost a mitten in the depths of winter. Children will participate in a craft project after the story. This program is in conjunction with Jewish Disabilities and Inclusion Awareness Month. For more information or to RSVP contact Michelle Cicchitelli at mcicchitelli@jewishallianceri.org or 401.421.4111 ext. 178. Speaker: Middle East Terrorism The Bus on Jaffa Road with author Mike Kelly Sunday, March 6 | 9:30 am In his newest novel, prize-winning author and journalist Mike Kelly touches upon the complicated and long history of Middle East Terrorism and the pursuit of justice following the murder of two American teens, and 22 others, as result of a suicide bus bombing in Jerusalem in 1996. It was later discovered that this terror attack, and others that preceded it, were financed by the Iranian government, resulting in a lawsuit in the United States courts. The Bus on Jaffa Road is the story of one act of terror and what happened afterwards. It offers many lessons -- and warnings -- about the current war on terrorism that has dominated US politics. Created by our partner, the Harold Grinspoon Foundation, and supported through the Jewish Alliance Annual Campaign, PJ Library reaches out to Jewish families to foster curiosity about their heritage while exploring their Jewish identity. Each participating child receives a free, high-quality Jewish book or CD every month in the mail, representing a wide array of Jewish themes, along with a guide to help families use the selections in their homes. Books and music have the added benefit of being a natural conversation starter for families eager to instill deep and passionate Jewish feelings in their children.

Did you know? Reading to your child,

as early as infancy, has been proven to have lasting benefits on language development. Research has found that reading to your baby provides the exposure to language that can positively influence learning throughout the rest of his/her life. It also helps form special bonds between you and your child. PJ Library books provide an excellent opportunity to start reading with your child, while also exposing them to the traditions and values of Judaism.

David C. Isenberg Family Early Childhood Center The David C. Isenberg Family Early Childhood Center (ECC) provides an enriching, multi-faceted early childhood education program for children three months of age through pre-kindergarten. We also offer a nurturing Infant/ Toddler Program and an enriching Preschool Program to serve families. The mission of the Isenberg Early Childhood Center is to provide a safe, child-centered, Jewish setting where each child will explore his or her world through discovery of self, community, and the environment. Children will develop trusting and respectful relationships with their peers and teachers as they learn through play in a nurturing atmosphere. Each child will be encouraged to create his or her own experiences at an individual developmental level through self-directed and teacher-facilitated activities and interactions. All children with different physical, social/emotional and cognitive abilities are welcome. Why the Isenberg Early Childhood Center? All children in our program will develop knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors necessary to achieve optimal wellness and become committed to lifelong learning. This, in turn, leads to healthy individuals, families, and communities. We include all aspects of wellness, such as social, emotional, physical, and nutritional. The ECC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and BrightStars, Rhode Island’s quality rating and improvement system that recognizes and supports quality in child care and early learning programs. In addition, our entire staff is CPR certified.

Aquatics Heated Indoor Pool Immerse yourself in a variety of pool activities in our newly renovated, heated indoor pool, one of the few available to the public on the East Side of Providence. We have a variety of open swim times, as well as adult and gender-specific times. We offer swim classes for all ages and swim levels through The Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy. Swimming provides a different exercise format compared to more traditional forms of fitness activities. Water activities provide weightlessness and do not pull one down the same way a regular workout would. Water aerobics are easy on the joints and can even increase muscle strength and endurance due to the water's built-in resistance. Check the pool schedule to see our variety of water fitness classes in both shallow and deep water. Use of our pool during regularly scheduled swim times is FREE for members. Not a member? Dropin fee is $12 for adults and $6 for kids under 13 years old. View our pool schedule and classes online at www. jewishallianceri.org or call the Aquatics office at 401.421.4111 ext. 153.

Now at the Dwares JCC! The Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy offers a learn-to-swim program for children of all ages. Started in 2005 by four-time Olympic Gold Medalist Lenny Krayzelburg, its "core purpose is to teach and inspire children to be water safe." Since its inception, they have taught thousands of children water safety and the importance of knowing how to swim. Using the SwimRight® Method, they utilize the swim-float-swim technique as a foundation and focus on providing children with the knowledge of confidence and safety in and around the water. Students progress from the beginning stages of swimming to learning all four strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly. All of our instructors are certified in the SwimRight® Method. Starting as young as three months old, children learn to swim at their own pace. After a free evaluation, swimmers are assigned to a particular swim level. Students are then taught using the SwimRight® Method, which focuses on correct body positioning and alignment from the very beginning. Progress is recorded in a personal swim journal with the use of positive reinforcement and fun exercises. As each swimmer advances, he/she participates in safety tests to demonstrate his/her proficiency in their ability and technique. Using an exceptional education system designed around swimming fundamentals and emphasizing water safety, three types of lessons are offered: • Parent/Toddler lessons (maximum: 8 per class) • Group (maximum: 4 – 8 per class based on level) • Private Lessons We strongly suggest that students take at least one class per week, year-round. Consistency is one of the most important factors towards becoming proficient and gaining confidence in the water. Every swimmer must register for a free initial level evaluation. Academy Hours: Sundays 10:00am – 12:00pm Mondays 4:00 – 7:00pm | Girls only 7:00 – 8:00pm Tuesdays 1:00 – 7:00pm | Boys only 7:00 – 8:00pm Wednesdays 4:00 – 7:00pm | Girls only 7:00 – 8:00pm Thursdays 4:00 – 7:00pm | Boys only 7:00 – 8:00pm Saturdays 10:30am – 12:00pm For information about the Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy at the Dwares JCC, including cancellations/make-up policy, termination policy, monthly billing and more, contact London Blake at 401.421.4111 ext. 153 or lblake@jewishallianceri.org.
