Holidays Holidays begin at sundown the previous day.

Tu b’Shevat - New Year for the Trees: January 31 The Jewish Arbor Day, which has become a celebration of nature and environmentalism in Israel.

Purim: March 1 This day of Jewish merrymaking marks the salvation of the Jewish community from near destruction by the Persian tyrant Haman.The story of this victory is recorded in the Book of Esther.

Pesach - Passover: March 31 - April 7 This eight-day festival commemorates the Israelite exodus from Egyptian slavery.Two services (Seders) occur in Jewish homes on the first two nights of the holiday.

Yom Ha’Shoah - Holocaust Memorial Day: April 12 This day is dedicated to the memory of the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis during World War II.

Yom Ha’Zikaron - Israel Memorial Day: April 18 This day is dedicated to the memory of those who fell in Israel’s wars and victims of terrorism.

Yom Ha’Atzmaut - Israel Independence Day: April 19 This holiday commemorates the State of Israel’s Declaration of Independence in 1948.

Shavuot - The Feast of Weeks, or Pentecost: May 20 - 21 This two-day holiday commemorates the receiving of the Torah by the Israelites on Mount Sinai.

Taste of Tu B’Shevat Wednesday, January 31 | 9:00 - 11:00am & 4:00 - 6:00pm | Dwares JCC

Tu B’Shevat is the season in which the earliest blooming trees in the Land of Israel emerge from their winter sleep and begin a new fruit-bearing cycle. It is traditional to eat fruit such as grapes, figs, pomegranates, olives, and dates on the holiday. Join us for a taste of some of these foods. PJ Library stories and Drop-in Crafting will be available starting at 4:15pm. Free and open to the community.

Passover Charoset-off Monday, March 26 | 10:00am - 12:00pm & 4:00 - 6:00pm | Dwares JCC

One of the symbolic foods on the Passover Seder Plate, charoset is a dish made from fruits and nuts, with its color and texture representing the mortar the Israelites used when they were enslaved in Ancient Egypt. There are countless ways to make charoset. Come taste different recipes used by some of the Jewish Alliance staff members, and share some of your own secrets. Free and open to the community.

Shavout Celebration at Wright’s Dairy Farm Tuesday, May 15 | 4:00 - 6:00pm | 200 Woonsocket Hill Road, North Smithfield

Shavout begins on the evening of May 19 continuing through May 21. It is customary to eat dairy during this time.

Learn about where dairy products come from as we explore a real working dairy farm, which has been serving the community for over 100 years. This is an outdoor event, so please dress appropriately. Be sure to wear shoes that might get a little dirty. Bring a picnic dinner or purchase some goodies in the bakery shop, and join us at the picnic tables while we listen to PJ Library stories about Shavout. Space is limited; RSVP IS REQUIRED. All ages welcome!

The Dwares JCC offers an array of artistic and cultural opportunities in which you and your family can participate. From live music to film screenings, art exhibits to literary events, our Arts & Culture programming will provoke thoughtful discussions, stretch your imagination, and expose you to stimulating concepts and ideas. We are committed to presenting you with the best of Jewish culture—on display for the enjoyment of the greater Rhode Island community.

Goodwin Art Studio Here is your chance to get those creative juices flowing! Engaging in art helps promote creativity, problem solving, the ability to focus, and many other important life skills. Our Art Studio is a place for adults who might not have made “art” since they were kids, crafters who are looking to learn something new, artists who are looking for a space to work in and collaborate with others, and much more. On the second Tuesday of each month, we will be hosting a workshop* that will focus on a specific skill, which will then allow you to create a project of your own. We will also provide Open Studio times to allow adults and children to drop-in, use our materials, and get creative through a self-guided exploration of art. We can offer ideas, supplies, and the materials you need to make your next masterpiece, or you are welcome to bring in your own. Either way, leave us with the mess! Groups are able to utilize the space for private parties/playdates, moms’ night out, and more. Bullet Journaling Ages: 16+ Many New Year’s resolutions focus around doing things differently, and whether you are starting to create a meal plan for the week, engage in a new exercise routine, or just log your daily task lists, bullet journaling can help you keep track of them all in a fun and artistic way. Come and learn different ways this technique can work for you. Journals will be provided.

Whether you want to add a stained glass look to a window or create a set of hand-painted glasses for your table top, this workshop will introduce you to the basics you need to know to get started.

Decoupage Ages: 16+ Decoupage is the art of decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in a combination of ways using special effects. In this workshop you will learn the basic techniques to decoupage.You will have the opportunity to choose a project to work on, or bring something of your own to spruce up.

Learn how to use a variety of materials to make charms or pendants and ways to string beads to make unique designs. All participants will leave with new skills and a piece of jewelry. Tuesday, April 10, 7:00 - 9:00pm Price: $20 | Members: $15 ID: 11978 Mosaics Ages: 16+ A mosaic is a piece of art or an image made from assembling small pieces of colored glass, stone, or other materials to create a picture or pattern. This workshop will teach you basic mosaic techniques, and all participants will create their own set of coasters.

Kosher Senior Café - Providence Monday - Friday, 12:00pm The Senior Café in Providence, which has returned to the Dwares JCC, offers a kosher lunch Monday through Friday at noon for seniors and adults with disabilities. Local kosher caterer Accounting for Taste ensures meals are both tasty and nutritious.Varied programs including lectures, films, music, bingo, dance therapy, blood pressure screening, and kibbitz groups take place following the meal.

Reservations for lunch are required two days in advance. There is a suggested donation of $3 per meal, but there is no charge for scheduled social activities. In this film, a group of young Israelis with Down Syndrome embark on a demanding trek through the Himalayas with their siblings. As they deal with physical and emotional challenges, unresolved conflicts surface and heartwarming friendships develop. Follow their difficult trials and poignant relationships set against the richly colorful backdrop of India.

Tel Aviv is by far one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Culled from more than a thousand pictures of people in Tel Aviv, these 40 pictures and stories show the amazing diversity and vibrant civil society of Israel and illustrate the uniqueness of Israeli society.

Follow Golda Meir from her humble beginnings as a teacher to her meteoric rise through Israel’s early political system, becoming one of the world’s first elected female heads of state and influential women in Israel’s history.

Enter the world of the Jewish-Yemenite tradition. Learn about the fascinating history of Yemenite Jews including their immigration to Israel and the difficulties of assimilation.

Israeli-American chef Michael Solomonov, the James Beard Foundation Chef of the Year (2017), will share his personal story and describe what Israeli cuisine truly is. In addition, local screenings of “The Search for Israeli Cuisine” will be held in the spring. The documentary chronicles the 70+ cultures that make up the Israeli people, each with wonderful and unique food traditions. Generously funded by the Dr. James Yashar & Judge Marjorie Yashar Fund at the Jewish Federation Foundation.

Wednesday, June 6 | 7:00pm Military Intelligence in the Information Age

Learn what intelligence research is and how it is gathered.

Guest speaker Yael Stolarsky, a former IDF intelligence soldier, will explore the challenges and changes in our fast-paced world, the “information era,” and some of the revisions and concepts in intelligence analysis.

Israel Desk The Alliance Israel Desk supports opportunities to travel and study in Israel. We match people to programs, provide grants and scholarships, and offer travel resources. For more information including applications, submission deadlines, and more regarding the following programs, contact the Israel Desk at israeldesk@jewishallianceri.org or 401.421.4111 ext. 181.

• Gift of Israel is an incentive savings program in which families, congregations, and the Jewish Alliance contribute funds toward an educational program in Israel. Students enrolled must be in grades 3 - 10 and may accumulate $3,200, which may be used through age 26. There are two enrollment plans: a standard savings plan for grades 3 - 8 and a catch-up savings plan for grades 4 - 6.

• Israel Study/Travel Grants and Scholarships are available to greater Rhode Island Jews in high school through age 26 who plan to study/travel to Israel. Non-need-based grants are available to high school students through age 26. Need-based scholarships are only available to high school and gap year students.

Application deadline:Thursday, March 15.

Birthright Israel Birthright Israel provides the gift of first-time, peer-group, educational trips to Israel for Jewish young adults ages 18 to 26 for FREE. This program was created to send thousands of young Jewish adults from all over the world to Israel as a gift in order to diminish the growing division between Israel and Jewish communities around the world, to strengthen the sense of solidarity among world Jewry, and to strengthen participants’ personal Jewish identity and connection to the Jewish people.

Local participants receive the gift of this 10-day trip funded by private philanthropists through The Birthright Israel Foundation, the people of Israel through the Government of Israel, and the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island’s Annual Campaign. Registration takes place mid-February for summer trips. Pre-register now so that you may be informed of the exact registration dates at www.BirthrightIsrael.org. Please be advised that waiting lists often start forming during the day immediately after registration begins. Israeli Emissary

Tslil Reichman is our community’s shlichah (Israeli emissary). She teaches and speaks throughout the community, particularly in Jewish schools, synagogues, and campus Hillel programs. However, she is available to make presentations to community groups and groups of friends who would like to learn more about Israel. She also conducts programs at the Dwares JCC and in the non-Jewish community. Israel Culture Nights Join us on the first Wednesday of most months for a night of Israeli culture! Community Relations Council (CRC) The Community Relations Council provides advocacy and policy opportunities for people interested in social justice and issues relating to Israel and worldwide Jewry. The CRC is an advocate to preserve the rights of all Jews and non-Jews by promoting a fair and just society through Jewish values and ideals including the commitment to tikkun olam (repairing the world). Together with the Jewish and greater Rhode Island communities, the CRC works to enhance cooperation with other religious, racial, ethnic, and civic groups; to foster a just, democratic, and pluralistic society; and to promote the security of Israel and Jews everywhere.

The CRC, together with the Jewish Alliance, remains an integral partner of this coalition helping to fulfill its vision that every Rhode Islander shall have: a decent, safe, and affordable home; adequate food and nutrition; equal access to affordable quality health care; equal and quality education for all children; and decent work with adequate income.

The Rhode Island Holocaust Memorial | Providence’s River Walk The Rhode Island Holocaust Memorial stands in tribute to all that we have lost and all that we have learned. By providing a place for meaningful reflection, and by sharing the lessons of the Holocaust, we hope that the Memorial will help create a kinder world. The Rhode Island Holocaust Memorial honors those lost, and is also a tribute for, and on behalf of, Rhode Island’s remaining Holocaust Survivors. Ways to Give Back

The Jewish Alliance Annual Campaign raises money to support Jewish life in Rhode Island, in Israel, and across the globe. Honoring the Jewish values of compassion, generosity, and responsibility, our donors make it possible for us to fund more than 300 programs and services locally and worldwide. In fact, many of the opportunities in this guide are made possible through the support of donors to the Annual Campaign.

Locally, campaign donations allow the Alliance to provide direct funding to day schools, Jewish summer day and overnight camps, and educational programming at the Dwares JCC — all beacons of Jewish life and learning in our community. The generosity of donors allows us to help those who need it most, be they isolated seniors looking for socialization, individuals living with disabilities who are seeking special services, or families struggling to keep food on their tables or gas in their cars.

Rosh Hodesh Tuesday, May 22 | 12:00 - 1:30pm | Dwares JCC Rosh Hodesh, the day that celebrates the arrival of the new Jewish month, has long been recognized as a women’s holiday. Twice a year, the Women’s Alliance hosts a luncheon focused on introspection, dialogue, and study with a local educator. The Joys and Oys of Parenting: Insight and Wisdom from the Jewish Tradition Thursday, February 1 | 7:00pm | Dwares JCC Parenting can often leave us feeling like we are on a roller coaster.

Join Jewish Book Council author and professor of psychology at Rutgers University, Maurice J. Elias, Ph.D, as he discusses his book The Joys and Oys of Parenting: Insight and Wisdom from the Jewish Tradition, which draws on Jewish wisdom as well as the expertise of child development professionals to offer practical ideas, advice, and inspiration for parents. Topics include maintaining a peaceful home, establishing routines, fostering resilience, promoting responsibility, sparking motivation, nurturing kindness, and cultivating gratitude while emphasizing how to be mindful of the joys involved in parenting while helping our children learn to live with integrity.

Dr. Elias will provide insight on practical skills that can be easily implemented.

This is a partnership program between PJ Library, the David C. Isenberg Family Early Childhood Center, and the Jewish Community Day School of Rhode Island.

The Jewish Alliance has an audio/visual lending library. Our vast collection offers a variety of feature films, documentaries, trigger films, TV shows and music CDs. Items are available in English, Yiddish, Hebrew, and Ladino (Judeo-Spanish). PJ Library is a Jewish literacy and outreach program for families with young children ages 6 months through 8 years.

Created by our partner the Harold Grinspoon Foundation (HGF) and supported through the Jewish Alliance Annual Campaign, PJ Library reaches out to Jewish families to foster curiosity about their heritage while exploring their Jewish identity. Every month in the mail, each participating child receives a free, high-quality Jewish book or CD representing a wide array of Jewish themes along with a guide to help families use the selections in their homes. Books and music have the added benefit of being a natural conversation starter for families eager to instill deep and passionate Jewish feelings in their children. David C. Isenberg Family Early Childhood Center The mission of the David C. Isenberg Family Early Childhood Center (ECC) is to provide a safe, welcoming, child-centered educational setting infused with Judaic values for children three months of age through prekindergarten (four years old by September 1). Our students explore their world and create their own experiences through discovery using a combination of teacher- and student-directed opportunities to allow for individual development. We offer a balance of free choice, socialization, science, math, literacy, creative arts, social studies, motor skills, and more. All children are welcome regardless of their religious and cultural backgrounds or their physical, social/emotional, and cognitive abilities.

Why choose the David C. Isenberg Family Early Childhood Center?

Our program is designed for children to develop a love for life-long learning and the knowledge, attitudes, skills, and behaviors necessary to achieve optimal wellness. The ECC is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), BrightStars (Rhode Island’s tiered quality and rating service), and the Department of Children,Youth, and Families (DCYF). We have a nurse on-site, and our entire staff is trained in first aid and CPR. Daily kosher vegetarian snacks and meals are included in the cost of tuition and are created in-house by our lead and assistant chefs.

We also have an active Parent Committee, which creates a series of family-fun activities each school year. The Parent Committee is dedicated to expanding children’s development through resource enrichment, community building, and sustained growth. All events are part of the Parent Committee’s annual campaign to raise funds to supplement school resources and community events.

Babysitting | Ages: 6 months – 6 years The Dwares JCC offers babysitting, from January 2 to June 17, in coordination with some of our fitness classes. This drop-in child care service, supervised by our caring, experienced, and CPR/First Aid-certified staff, allows parents to exercise or take classes. Children may attend babysitting for up to 2 hours per day, on a first-come, first-served basis. Strict adult to child ratios are followed, so space is limited. A 24 hours’ advance reservation is strongly recommended to secure your child’s spot. Parent/guardian must remain on the Dwares JCC campus at all times. Preschool Pottery Ages: 4 - 5 Children will explore their creativity by making unique clay projects while developing fine motor skills including the ability to make coil pots in our art studio.

Each week pottery participants will learn different techniques to further their skills, and project ideas will be individualized based on child’s skill level. Israel Exploration: Make it Take It! Kids’ Night Out: Toddler/Preschool Edition!

Teen Membership Did you know we offer a standalone teen membership to the Dwares JCC? This membership provides access to a variety of special events, classes, fitness activities, and more! Teens who are part of a family membership are automatically included. Day passes are also available.

Teen members can take advantage of all the Dwares JCC has to offer including: Teen Fitness Leading a healthy lifestyle includes being involved in physical activity, and youth and teens are uniquely positioned to develop lifelong habits that can either help or hurt them as they grow. A teen membership provides access to the following fitness-related activities. Special events are also planned sporadically throughout the year and will be posted on the teen bulletin board. If you would like to see something specific, let us know!

Gymnasium The gymnasium is available for teen members during after school, open gym hours to hang out, get some exercise, and play with friends. Teens must sign in and out at the Welcome Center and in the Teen Lounge upon arrival and departure. Teens may also sign out a basketball for use in the gym.

Fitness Center After completing the Youth and Teen Fitness Certification Program (details below), teen members are able to use the equipment on the fitness floor. Misuse of the equipment will result in revoked privileges and future use only with adult supervision.

Youth and Teen Fitness Certification Program Ages: 10+ AND in 6th Grade+ This certification program is for teen members who wish to use the fitness center. Participants will learn how to use equipment safely and the principles of cardiovascular, strength, and

flexibility training. This one-session class is offered to members by appointment only and is approximately 2 hours long. It includes a lecture and discussion, demonstrations, and hands-on experience, and participants will receive a program manual.

One must pass a written test in order to obtain certification.

Community Service Project for Teens: The Philadelphia Trip February 17 - 19 This unique experience allows teens to learn about homelessness and hunger as they make a real difference in the lives of those who need it most. The Philly Trip is for any Jewish teen in grades 8 - 12 who is interested in social action, leadership, and putting the value of tikkun olam (repairing the world) into action. This is a great opportunity to connect with other teens from across the state for an inspiring and fun-filled weekend while earning community service hours! This trip includes boxing and delivering food to elderly Jewish families, clothing the homeless with winter clothing, bagging food to be delivered to low income families, and celebrating a job well done with a night bowling with friends. Trip participants are required to take part in a discussion group focusing on “Hunger and homelessness in the State of Rhode Island” and “ Where do we go from here?” *Please note that there is a cost for this trip, which covers meals, hotel for two nights, and evening activities. Tweens & Teens CPR/First Aid Ages: 12+ Sign up for this class and learn the skills taught by the American Red Cross to get certified in CPR and First Aid for Adults, Children, and Infants.You will receive a participant handbook and CPR mask; you will learn the skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person; you will learn how to decide whether advanced medical care is needed.

For summer 2018, Lower Camp will follow a similar schedule to those in our Upper Camp with a variety of new activities and occasional field trips. Our new two-week sessions include working on a mitzvah project and training in the morning followed by participating in electives, instructional swim, and group activities in the afternoon. For 9th and10th grade CITs, we offer a more focused training program.

This four-week session is divided up into themes: Introductions, Behavior Development, Programming, and Putting Plans into Action. Participants may sign up for either two consecutive or four consecutive weeks. Once their initial training is complete, CITs are encouraged to sign up for more weeks to continue their journey and exploration into becoming fantastic future leaders at J-Camp.

Classes are a great place for seniors to connect with friends and meet new people. Our diverse instructors will stimulate your passion for exercise. Fit Forever classes emphasize strength conditioning and functional training with movement to include stretching to improve balance, and range of motion along with posture alignment. Fit Forever classes are 50 minutes long.

To help combat the risks associated with isolation and loneliness among older adults, the Jewish Alliance partners with a local taxi company. Together, we are providing vouchers at a highly subsidized rate intended for financially vulnerable Jewish individuals living in Rhode Island who are either 65 years of age and older or have an ADA-recognized disability.

HEATED INDOOR POOL Dive into water activities and enjoy one of the few heated indoor pools available on Providence’s East Side. We provide water walking, aqua aerobics, family swim, adult lap swim, as well as adult and gender-specific times. Our popular and successful, Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy (LKSA) teaches infants through school-age children confidence and safety in water. Swimmers can also continue on to high-level competitive stroke improvement.

We offer a variety of water fitness classes in both the shallow and deep ends. Classes run for 45 minutes. Use of our pool during regularly scheduled swim times is FREE for members.

The class sequence includes stretching and resistance training using the weight of the water in combination with hand buoys. This class is ideally suited for beginner fitness levels or those who may have physical limitations. No swim skills necessary.

36 TigerSharks Swim Team Ages: 6 - 18 (Competitive) TigerSharks begins its seventh season as part of the RIMA (Rhode Island/Massachusetts) League. The swim team prepares swimmers of varying abilities to reach their highest potential.

Swimmers grow and succeed in a fun and competitive environment while focusing on stroke technique and endurance. Training is divided into two different levels based on swimming ability, speed, and endurance to allow positive, effective group and individual instruction. Rolling enrollment through March 11.

Lenny Krayzelburg Swim Academy (LKSA) is the Dwares JCC’s successful swim program that utilizes an exceptional education system designed around swimming fundamentals and an emphasis on water safety. Starting as young as three months, children can learn to swim at their own pace. After a free evaluation, swimmers are assigned to one of the eight swim levels based on the student’s personal needs.

Student lessons are taught by certified instructors in the SwimRight® Method, which focuses on correct body positioning and alignment. Progress is recorded in the student’s swim sticker book along with the use of positive reinforcement and fun exercises. As each swimmer advances, they participate in safety tests to demonstrate their proficiency in their ability and technique.

LKSA is a year round swim program, with no sessions; therefore students may join at any time.

Group lessons are 25 minutes long and private lessons are 15 minutes long. We strongly suggest that students take at least one class per week, year-round. Consistency in the water is one of the most important factors that lead to becoming proficient and gaining confidence in the water.
