Jewish Community Programmatic Support 2016 - 2017 Every year, our community comes together in an extraordinary spirit of generosity to contribute to our Annual Campaign. And, every spring, after rigorous review, we make strategic philanthropic investments in an array of deeply impactful programs and organizations.

Together, we are addressing critical needs and strengthening our community – locally and globally – with compassion, innovation and purpose. Thanks to you, we were able to raise $3.2M and allocate funds to more than 300 programs worldwide.

The following summary encapsulates the Alliance’s distribution of Annual Campaign funds for the 2016 - 2017 fiscal year.

Investing in Jewish Life and Learning: Experiencing Judaism for life Ages 0 - 5 • Early Childhood Center (Jewish Alliance) Provides full-service childcare and education for children 3 months to 5 years, focusing on Jewish values and traditions in a NAEYC-accredited, DCYF licensed program.

• Shalom Family/Community Outreach (Jewish Alliance) Connects over 1,000 children and their families to events and resources that enhance their quality of Jewish life, and offers an array of programs that engage and support Jewish families, including PJ Library, Shalom Rhode Island, and Shalom Baby.

Children/Youth • Camp Scholarship Fund (Camp JORI) Provides needs-based scholarships for campers in grades 2 - 10, as well as counselor training opportunities at Camp JORI, Rhode Island’s only overnight Jewish camp.

• Camp Gan Israel Scholarships (Chabad of West Bay) Offers Jewish summer and winter camp that cultivates pride and love for Jewish peoplehood and Judaism to children ages 3 to 18 years.

• General Program Support (JCDS, PHDS) Provides students at Jewish day schools in Providence the opportunity to have the highest quality Jewish education and learn proficiency in the areas of culture, history, prayer, and language.

• J-Camp (Jewish Alliance) Encourages campers to explore their Jewish connection and identity through values-based activities. Funding provides assistance with scholarship support for campers and counselors-in-training.

• Chaplaincy, Yawgoog Scout Reservation (RI Jewish Committee on Scouting, Boy Scouts of America) Supports Jewish chaplain to provide leadership programming for Jewish boys, ages 11 to 17, and adult leaders, 18 and older, at Camp Yawgoog.

• J-Space (Jewish Alliance) Provides after-school and vacation programming for children from 10 schools, focusing on academic skill-building, technology, and the exploration of an array of interests.

Investing in Jewish Life and Learning: Experiencing Judaism for life (continued) Teens • Israel Desk and Advocacy Center (Jewish Alliance) Communicates strong connections to Israel by supporting student and community member Israel trips, provides grants and scholarships for Israel study for high school and college students, and administers the Gift of Israel program for hundreds of children in partnership with families and 11 area synagogues.

• Harry & Esther Elkin Teen Initiatives (Jewish Alliance) Infuses Jewish values and culture through a constellation of programs including community events, fitness, Israel programming, grants and scholarships for study travel, HaZamir (International Jewish High School Choir), and more.

Young Adults • Birthright Israel Strengthens Jewish identity, Jewish communities, and solidarity with Israel by providing a 10-day trip to Israel for young Jewish people.

• Discretionary Scholarship (Brown/RISD Hillel) Fosters long-term connections to Jewish life among 1,500 college students through Shabbat programming, arts, culture, and community.

• Student Engagement (URI Hillel) Offers social, cultural, community service, and educational opportunities on campus for almost 1,200 students in order to enrich their Jewish experience.

• (401)j (Jewish Alliance in partnership with Temple Beth-El,Temple Emanu-El, and Congregation Beth Sholom) Engages the next generation through diverse community events and year-round programming for adults in their 20s and 30s interested in local volunteer and long-term leadership capacities.

Families • Arts & Culture (Jewish Alliance) Supports inspiring programs that link Jewish values and traditions with local, national, and international arts and culture, and celebrate diversity, religion, and the greater community through film, music, educational programs, gallery shows, and classes.

All Ages • Program Outreach (Sandra Bornstein Holocaust Education Center of Rhode Island) Strives to reduce prejudice and bigotry and honor those who perished by educating over 7,000 Rhode Island students about the Holocaust and the lessons to take from it.

• Educational Services (Jewish Alliance) Supports schools and educators to provide high-quality, dynamic Jewish education in greater Rhode Island through professional development and capacity-building programs for 15 schools and nearly 200 educators.

• Annual Study Kallah (Board of Rabbis of Greater Rhode Island) Supports the opportunity for learning and collegiality for all clergy who serve this region.

• Vestnik of Rhode Island (Vestnik) Educates and informs the Russian-speaking Jewish community about Judaism, state and national news, job training, and citizen exams through a newspaper distributed to 500 subscribers.

• Holiday Programming (Chabad of Barrington) Encourages the celebration and understanding of Jewish holidays for the Jewish households on the East Bay of Rhode Island.

• Community Holiday Programming (Chabad of West Bay) Programming for the West Bay of Rhode Island honoring the Jewish holidays through community celebrations and hands-on workshops.

Investing in Caring and Social Responsibility: Helping our local community in need Senior Adults • Jewish Eldercare of Rhode Island (JSA) Supports critical outreach and engagement programs for seniors in assisted-living and nursing facilities, maintaining a sense of Jewish life and a connection with the Jewish community.

• Kosher Nutrition/Meals-on-Wheels (Jewish Family Service) Fosters a crucial sense of community and provides nutritious meals as well as social and educational programming to more than 160 seniors weekly through Meals-on-Wheels and congregate dining.

Adults and Families • Wraparound Services (JFS) Coordinates the critical delivery of assistance and support for the Jewish community through the areas of case management, counseling, and home care solutions.

• Prison Services Program (Chabad of West Bay) Provides the sole rabbinic services and visitation to the men’s prison at the Adult Correctional Institute through Jewish holiday services, monthly prayer services, and conversation to nearly 20 inmates.

• Full Plate/Kosher Food Pantry (JSA) Builds a sense of community through this largely volunteer-driven program providing kosher food to those in need, serving approximately 150 households monthly.

• Kesher (JFS) Provides critical support from an on-site social worker to offer counseling and workshops topical to the congregation’s needs at 5 area synagogues.

Investing in Jewish Peoplehood: Supporting Judaism and Jewish people everywhere All Ages • Core Programming (Jewish Agency for Israel) Funds the Jewish Agency for Israel, acting as a first responder to emergencies in Israel, providing services to new immigrants and at-risk populations, and connecting the global Jewish community.

• Core Funding (JDC) Funds the Joint Distribution Committee in providing services for the impoverished and elderly, helping communities in nearly 65 countries rebuild Jewish life, and working with the Israeli government to respond to social needs.

Children,Teens, and Youth • Ben Yakir Youth Village (Jewish Agency for Israel) Supports nearly 100 at-risk boys, ages 12 to 18, in a religiously-oriented residential school with critical academic, therapeutic, and social skills, complementing classroom studies and encouraging individual expression.

• Ethiopians with Special Needs (Jewish Agency for Israel) Provides the needed diagnosis and treatment for 60 Ethiopian-Israeli children and their families who require special needs intervention during their two years post-immigration.

• Net@ (Jewish Agency for Israel) Helps more than 80 disadvantaged teens acquire crucial leadership skills, technology training, and English proficiency, and achieve personal, professional, and academic success so as to apply them in the broader community.

• Atid Summer Camps/Youth Programs Poland (JDC) Assists 140 Polish youth to discover and connect with their Jewish heritage and identity through Sunday school and Jewish summer camp.

• Yesodot (Jewish Agency for Israel) Instills academic and social success through math, Hebrew education, and first grade preparation in a socioeducational after-school program for over 230 Ethiopian children in Israel during their first two years following immigration.

Youth Futures (Jewish Agency for Israel) Provides essential educational and social services for 141 at-risk Israeli youth, and 140 families to overcome obstacles and reach their personal, educational, and social potentials.

Scholastic Assistance - Afula (Ethiopian National Project) Strengthens academic achievement for 33 youth participants, addressing social and personal barriers and offering collective and individual emotional assistance.

Teach-First Israel – Afula (JDC) Provides professional development for a select group of promising teachers who are placed in Israel’s highest needs schools while earning teaching certifications.

Parent-Child Play Program – Afula (JDC) Supports early intervention for 200 children with developmental delays and provides support to their families to foster healthy parent-child interactions.

Mishlei:Ticket to my Future (JDC) Assists at-risk young adults through a post-military service program.

Young Adults and Adults • MiNYanim Poland (Jewish Agency for Israel) Supports young leadership programming focused on cultivating leaders to ensure the revitalization of Jewish Poland and the long-term stability of the community.

• Adult Programming (JDC) Focuses on religious, educational, and social programming for adults at the JCC in Warsaw, Poland.

• Wings (Jewish Agency for Israel) Helps 10 immigrant Israeli soldiers without family in Israel during their difficult transitions to civilian life.

• Graduate Support Program (Yemin Orde Youth Village/Friends of Yemin Orde) Provides transitional support for teens graduating from a holistic residential program that serves 400+ young adults.

• Limmud-Keshet Poland (JDC) Supports a 3-day Jewish study-fest in Poland for young Jewish adults and families, attracting over 900 people and exposing participants to Jewish life.

• Valley Outreach and Support Project (Haifa Rape Crisis Center) Provides critical services to and counseling support for victims of sexual violence in the under-served Jezreel Valley.

Other Programs and Services • Young Shaliach Supports an Israeli emissary in Rhode Island to communicate the value and importance of a connection between Israel and Rhode Island and create understanding between the two cultures through programming at synagogues and in the community.

• Community Concierge Connects individuals and families to programs, services, and opportunities, providing one-on-one contact and continual follow-up, and is the liaison between the Alliance and the community-at-large.

• Community Relations Council Advocates for Jewish institutions and values, educates the community about key issues of concern, promotes a fair and just society through Jewish values and ideals, and reaches out – along with our neighbors – to build a better world.

• Rhode Island Jewish Historical Association Procures, collects, and preserves books, records, and other materials relating to the history of the Jews of Rhode Island, as well as encourages and promotes the study of such history and publishes and diffuses information as to such history.
