JEWISH COMMUNITY FEDERATION AND ENDOWMENT FUND OF SAN FRANCISCO, THE PENINSULA, MARIN AND SONOMA COUNTIES

THE POWER OF THE JEWISH COMMUNITY TO IMPROVE THE WORLD OUR VISION A vibrant, caring, and enduring Jewish community that is a force for good locally, in Israel, and around the world.

OUR MISSION The Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund is a philanthropic catalyst, connecting people of all ages, backgrounds, and perspectives to the power we have as a Jewish community to improve the world. We partner with donors, organizations, and foundations to address the pressing issues facing our community, and develop innovative strategies that result in deep and lasting impact locally, in Israel, and around the world.

OUR VALUES Our work is guided by the timeless Jewish values of kehilla (community), tzedakah (giving with just intention), and tikkun olam (repairing the world).

INTRODUCTION

Dear friends,

In the following pages, you will get a quick snapshot of the Federation’s financial landscape, its role in the community, and the various services it provides. The Federation is noteworthy for its intensive focus on impact, results, and on moving the Jewish community forward locally, in Israel, and beyond. It is a nationally respected leader in innovation and dynamic engagement geared toward a diverse and complex community. The Federation covers a 2,600 square mile region, serving an estimated Jewish population of nearly 250,000. Since 1910, it has supported the Jewish community – wherever needs arise, in whatever capacity – and we take great pride in our work to improve and transform people’s lives.

Federation earns top spot among US charities three years in a row In 2013 Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent evaluator of charities, once again gave our Federation its highest (4 star) rating. This indicates that the Federation executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way and outperforms most other charities in America. In fact, only 17% of charities receive a 4 star rating in consecutive years. In this competitive philanthropic marketplace, this “exceptional” designation confirms what our donors already know — that we are an effective organization they can support with confidence.

STRATEGY FOR MAKING AN IMPACT Ensuring the community’s well-being through our three roles For over 100 years, the Federation has been a safety net for those most at risk, and a foundation for the entire community. Today, we are building on that foundation, re-defining our work around three specific roles that represent our unique strengths and focus our efforts on the collective action needed to ensure a thriving Jewish community now and in the future: •

Strategic Investing: Raising funds annually and making grants to support the community's core organizations, foster innovation, and solve big challenges that impact our local, Israeli, and worldwide Jewish community; making strategic endowment grants to support capital projects, innovate, and meet emergencies.

•

Building Capacity: Cultivating high-performing organizations through our pro bono consulting, specialized consulting and trainings, and communities of practice of Jewish communal professionals.

•

Developing and Engaging Leaders and Philanthropists: Developing and engaging Jewish leaders and philanthropists to ensure our community’s future through the Jewish Community Endowment Fund and more.

Four Funds for a thriving community In order for our community to flourish, we established four high impact funds which, together, make for a healthy Jewish community: •

•

•

•

Community Core Fund: Caring for the vulnerable, promoting Jewish culture, and strengthening education and identity. Israel and Global Fund: Advancing social justice and equal opportunity in Israel; and providing for Jews in need worldwide. Bay Area Initiatives Fund: Addressing current community-wide challenges through targeted initiatives. Innovation Fund: Seed-funding innovative projects in emerging and traditional Jewish organizations.

5

ROLE 1: STRATEGIC INVESTING Through Strategic Investing, we raise funds and make grants that have a profound impact and are designed to: • • • • • • •

Strengthen Jewish identity through education and engagement. Reduce barriers and increase access to Jewish life. Advance social justice, equal opportunity, and pluralism in Israel. Take care of Jews in need worldwide. Provide seed-funding for innovative Jewish programs. Respond to emergencies. Help our community join together to improve the world.

SNAPSHOTS OF IMPACT:

In San Francisco, preschools are laying the foundation for a lifetime of Jewish connection for children.

In the former Soviet Union, homecare workers act as a lifeline for isolated and frail seniors.

In Budapest, hundreds of young adults are being exposed to their Jewish culture for the first time.

6

In Israel, Ethiopian Jews are integrating, participating, and prospering in Israeli society.

ROLE 2: CAPACITY BUILDING A vibrant community requires more than money. It also needs a network of high-performing, operationally-sound organizations and essential infrastructure to ensure that all of the community’s dollars are efficiently spent. Our Jewish institutions today face heightened organizational stress from reduced staffing and scarce resources. The Federation’s Capacity Building services work to continually strengthen the operations and impact of all of our Jewish organizations.

OUR SERVICES INCLUDE: • •

“Having some of the best real estate and finance minds in the Bay Area in our court will go a long way toward making our new [Jewish] Home provide the best care possible.” ~ Daniel Ruth, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Jewish Home

“We have never received support like this and are thrilled to have resources brought to our Congregation. It gives us renewed energy and a burst of ideas.” ~ Bonnie Lindauer, President of Congregation B’nai Emunah

ROLE 3: DEVELOPING LEADERS & PHILANTHROPISTS The continuing vibrancy of our community depends on our collective ability to develop and mobilize philanthropists and leaders. The Federation funds programs that nurture and engage leadership locally, in Israel, and overseas. With particular emphasis on the next generation, we support a diverse range of impactful programs in Leadership Development and Philanthropic Education. Through our programs, we invest in leaders of all ages today to maintain healthy, sustainable Jewish communities for the future.

8

•

Each year the Federation’s Young Adult Division, Women’s Philanthropy, and Business Leadership Council engage thousands of Bay Area Jews through events, volunteerism and fundraising efforts.

•

More than 500 local Jewish high school students have participated in the Jewish Community Teen Foundations and raised more than $1.4 million to improve the world.

•

The Federation’s Gvanim program in Israel trains leaders from every sector of Israeli society to support pluralism, religious diversity, and unity in their own communities.

•

Through our Fed Fellows, LGBTQ Pathways, and other leadership programs, we are recruiting and developing new leaders through intensive experiences.

PHILANTHROPIC SERVICES Over a century ago, our community came together to create the charitable organizations that took care of Jews in need, and it established the Federation to steward dollars where they had the greatest impact. Our clients align their charitable goals with their Jewish values through a range of programs and expert services including: •

“My Donor Advised Fund comes from a Jewish institution. I like having that on the letterhead. I think that’s a powerful statement.” ~ Adean Golub

“My Donor Advised Fund at the Federation gives me great flexibility.” ~ Josh Becker

“JCF helps me simplify my charitable record keeping for tax purposes.” ~ Meredith Goldsmith

LIVING LEGACY SOCIETY Legacy Gifts Legacy gifts to the Federation sustain the vibrancy of the Jewish community from generation to generation. Gifts in perpetuity help ensure that, no matter what happens in the world, our community will have the resources it needs to support and enrich the lives of future generations. Grants from these sources seed innovation, respond to emergencies, and provide key resources for new capital projects in our community.

“The Jewish people throughout the centuries have reached out to provide for and help each other. Today, as in the past, we understand the value and strength of Jewish unity and work together…and we know the value, the joy, and the privilege of tzedakah.” ~ Roselyne Chroman Swig, Book of Life

The Book of Life The Book of Life recognizes the foresight and generosity of the members of the Living Legacy Society, individuals who have established a permanent fund within the Federation’s Endowment Fund – either during their lifetime or through their will – to help ensure Jewish continuity. Prominently displayed in the lobby of our building at 121 Steuart Street in San Francisco, it is an ever-growing record of names and family stories – now more than 500 strong. Book of Life members give form and substance to their dreams by sharing the unique thoughts and feelings that motivate their personal commitment to the future.

“It is important to us to attempt to leave this world a somewhat better place for our being here.” ~ Donald H. (z”l) and Ruth F. Seiler, Book of Life
