“Magical. What was impossible exists here. Makes me feel like I’m flying to the moon.” Camille sings in her earworm hit Magic (Magie, resp.). And the fact that the song is so popular especially with our youngsters, should not be a surprise: Children see magic because they - often much better than us adults - look for their inner imagination. Where we are quick to think “yeah right, flying to the moon…”, the most incredible adventures take place in the minds of our youth.

And that magic also takes place every time at the Antwerp Youth Film Festival.

Welcome to this year's feast of imagination. The great ladies and gentlemen behind this Youth Film Festival label it as "a magical place where stories are never far away." In the beautiful films, the cool games or the cool workshops for all those who love images and visual culture.

With the support of the city of Antwerp, the Antwerp Youth Film Festival received a total makeover for this 36th edition. The goal of the new look and communication campaign is as simple as ambitious: we want to make the Antwerp Youth Film Festival as accessible as possible, we want to attract more Antwerp and Flemish children and youngsters to the festival every year. We want as many young people as possible to take the magical stories of Youth Film Festival Antwerp home with them.

The collaboration between the City of Antwerp and Youth Film Festival Antwerp is a wonderful example of how the sector and the city can strengthen each other. Thanks in part to our support, the growth potential for the festival has accelerated enormously. Compared to edition 2022, the 2023 visitor numbers have increased by more than 50% in Antwerp. Never before in its 35-year history has the festival been so strong in our city.

The beating heart of the festival is in Antwerp, with the festival café, the XL-Medialab and screenings all over the city. From the MAS to Het Bos, from Lumière Antwerp to Cinema Rix. And where there is no cinema, the travelling inflatable cinema brings films to the children.

During the Antwerp Youth Film Festival, the focus is on the experience. Not each on their own in front of a screen, but watching, playing and creating together. During most screenings there will be extra experiences such as live music, a joint game or a guest who answers questions from the audience.

There is a game arena where you can cheer on players like during a real sports match, there are workshops during which you can make your own films or podcasts, and more.

In short, there is something for everyone as always, Or to paraphrase Camille one more time, the Youth Film Festival Antwerp brings a very fine light to the horizon!

Awards & juries Awards During the Youth Film Festival, there are various competitions, awards, and juries.

Best film – international jury → Cash prize of €2,500 (offered by TENTOO) for the director to support a new project. → Will be eligible for the ECFA award for best feature film of the year. International Jury The international jury hands out three awards: best film, best short film and best short documentary.

In 2020, she participated in the VAF’s screenplay workshop to develop the screenplay for her first feature film.

In 2022, she made her short documentary Bijzonder Buitengewoon within the Ket & Doc workshop, which won her several prizes at youth film festivals in Belgium and the Netherlands.

Mitsuo Tahira In 1992, Mitsuo Tahira founded Kinder Film Fest Japan, the first film festival for children in Japan.

During its 5th edition, he introduced the screening style ‘Live Cinema’, in which professional voice actors live-dub films on stage, to allow even small children who cannot read subtitles to enjoy them.

Under the name KINEKO International Film Festival, the festival grew to become the largest event of its kind in Japan and celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2023. In addition to building a partnership network with international film festivals worldwide, Mitsuo also brings quality cinema to children with special screening events throughout Japan.

Sarah Kasmi, filmmaker and founder of Movie Bank Productions, is a unifying force between Moroccan and Flemish culture. She is keen to bring that diversity to the screen and makes socially sensitive issues in our society hot topics.

Helena Maarja Tarro is a festival programmer for Just Film, the children and youth subfestival of Tallinn Black Nights. She started at Just Film as a member of the Youth Jury, after which she was invited to permanently join the programming team.

In addition to her work at the festival, Helena is a professional film and news journalist with experience in written media, radio and video platforms.

Sarah Kasmi

Kasmi enjoys working with young people. Talent and passion are the biggest factors in making their dreams come true, regardless of their origin. She offers new talents a chance to take their first steps in the film world. For instance, she created the fiction series Kids on the Block for Ketnet and De Studio’s for VRTnu. With a diverse cast, she hopes to add more colour to children’s and youth series.

Helena Maarja Tarro

Sarah Van Dale Sarah Van Dale’s short film Love Machine was screened at several festivals and earned her the nickname ‘Leuven’s short film favorite’.

She worked as a freelance director alongside Kamagurka and for Karrewiet on Ketnet, before founding her own production company Sarazon Creative. Together with street artist and storyboard illustrator Jeremiah Persyn, she continues to work on various creative projects.

I am 10 years old and I live in Ghent.

My hobbies are breakdance, Judo and scouts. I think it is REALLYYYYYY cool that I was chosen as children’s jury for the Youth Film Festival. My favorite movie is: 'It's raining meatballs 1 and 2'. I applied because I really like movies myself and I love talking about movies. I like almost every genre of movie. I look forward to going to the cinema every day.

I am super excited about becoming a member of the Youth Festival children's jury. I am sure I will gain many life experiences and fond memories because of it! Last year during the festival I went to see Titina with my moms and my brother Leon.

I am happy that this year I get to experience the whole festival! My favourite film is "Ponyo" by Hayao Miyazaki because it is very imaginative. I love to get totally absorbed in the story of a movie and I want other kids to have that fun too.

I love the Youth Film Festival so much, because you can play games there, see awesome films and have a great time. So I am thrilled to be in the children's jury. My favourite film is Titina, which I saw last year at the Youth Film Festival. I love seeing movies about dogs and the past and that one was very beautifully drawn and also nice that it had real images in it.

My favourite films are How To Train Your Dragon 1, 2 and 3. They are my favourite films because my love for dragons is endless and How To Train Your Dragon is the most fun and the most beautiful.

My love for film is very big, as is my love for the Youth Film Festival which I have been going to for years and even participated in with one of my own films. I hope that as a member of the children's jury I can make other people love films and the festival as much as I do.

I am happy to be on the jury of the Youth Film Festival Antwerp. I already went to the festival when I was a toddler. It's always a cool experience.

I am now 11 years old and in the sixth grade. I like to do sports and draw: I always have something to do.

I really enjoy discovering and watching new films. My favourite film is Turning Red by Disney and Pixar.

I am already looking forward to spring break!

Audience jury The audience jury in Antwerp decides which nominated feature film in competition will receive an award. The audience can vote after each film screening.

Film in hospital jury Through the online Film in hospital platform, children with reduced mobility can watch all short films in competition, and then vote for their favourite.

Their favourite short film will receive a Youth Film Festival Antwerp award.

The children will present this award during the closing ceremony.

Ambassadors Our amazing festival ambassadors this year are Ketnet-wrapper Sarah Mouhamou and television creator and radio presenter Linde Merckpoel.

Sarah Mouhamou

Linde Merckpoel

In 2014, Sarah Mouhamou began her career as a Ketnet-wrapper. She was only eighteen years old at the time. Meanwhile, she has her own programme Sarah on Ketnet Junior, in which she crafts and sings for the youngest television viewers. Besides being a presenter, Sarah is also a singer and voice actress, and she played the role of Fie Valentijn in De grote slijmfilm.

Linde Merckpoel is a creator for radio and TV. With her vlogs for VRT MAX, she tackles the most diverse topics in her personal and disarming way. She is one of the regular Studio Brussel voices and voiced Joy in the Flemish version of Pixar’s Inside Out.

“As a videographer, I love to draw viewers into a story using images. A good youth film can trigger so much.

Using stop-motion and natural materials, preschoolers create their own Tik Tak music video all by themselves.

One pebble. Two pebbles. Three pebbles in a row. They spin around and then form another line. Change colour and run after each other.

Whoop! A stick joins them to balance on. And then... a trail of corn?

The preschoolers use the stop-motion technique to string together pictures of natural materials. Using iPads, they then create their own short animated film!

This workshop was developed by Mooss.

Mooss is for all children, young people and supervisors who want to actively engage with art. Together, we discover the world of music, theatre, dance, audiovisual and visual arts.

What do Lego, robots, car racing and film have to do with each other? Together, they are the dream combination for a spectacular workshop! Are you ready for take-off?

First build your own Lego robot, which you will learn to control by programming afterwards. Cool, right?

But there's more! Inspired by car races and movie chase scenes, you will make your robot shine on screen.

Together with the instructor, you think about different camera angles.

How are races usually filmed? Do you film your robot from very close up or from far away? What happens if you place the camera at a great height?

Once you have come up with the ideal frame, your robot will race the other participants' robots. Meanwhile, you bring the battle to life on camera!

This workshop is a collaboration between Digitale Wolven and JEF. Digitale Wolven aims to prepare children for the digital world of tomorrow. Their hands-on workshops introduce children and young people to the infinite possibilities of ICT and technology in a playful way.

Anyone can build games! Come and try it during this futuristic two-day Gamejam.

For five days, dive into the world of film. Camera angles, lighting, stop-motion, projection... Step by step, you will learn about the magic of filmmaking. With camera in hand, you collect images. You process

Exploring Antwerp's Central Park (aka Zuidpark) lets your imagination run wild. What will the park look like in the future? Or in an alternate reality? Will runaway mowing robots or mutated sheep trim the grass? Or

them into audiovisual collages. This is how you build your own animation world, in which you also play a part.

You show the result at the end of the week.

This workshop is a collaboration between hetpaleis and JEF, and is supervised by artists Alex Akute and Liesbeth De Mey.

Based on your vision for the future and with digital cutting and pasting, you will build your own game in small groups. You do not need any previous knowledge of programming or image editing, but of course it is allowed.

We will work at everyone's level.

Alex Akute is a theatre maker and multidisciplinary artist. He enjoys working with young people to create an atmosphere where they can celebrate their unique identity. This is why he started Xray Community, where young people come together to inspire one another .

Liesbeth De Mey studied Audiovisual Arts at the RITCS and enjoys investigating stories in which ethics, society and culture intersect. Her master project In eternity played at Docville 2015 and she was on quite a few sets as assistant director, script supervisor or casting assistant. In 2020, she collaborated on I am afraid to forget your face, which won the Palm d'Or for best short film at the Cannes festival. She is currently finishing the short documentary Ronde 3 in collaboration with VAF, Ketnet and JEF.

This workshop was developed by BrainBugs. Bram Allegaert and Lennert Mottar from BrainBugs are two Digital Beasts who crawl inside your brain. They extract the craziest fantasies from it and turn them into wacky digital games. In their real lives, together with their partners, they make serious games on social issues.

Open your ears, close your eyes and discover the power of sound. The well-known Flemish-Dutch podcast collective SCHIK will show you how to record your own audio story. This is how to create a film for your ears.

This workshop was developed by Nele Eeckhout of the audio collective SCHIK. She has a Masters in Language and Literature, and a Masters in Drama-Word Art. In 2014, she won the NTR Radio Prize with her documentary Vogelen. Investigating the interface between audio and theatre, she created the performance 'Dit gebeurt niet'.

Experience an interactive VR documentary about gender-related violence and censorship.

The students watch the 15-minute VR film. Mariana (Maremoto), the main character, is a cartoonist who is constantly under attack because she's woman, because she exposes violations of fundamental human rights in her country, and simply because she draws. Mariana addresses gender inequality and censorship.

Virtual Reality is an ideal tool to positively influence students' attitudes towards certain social issues and bring about change. With additional assignments, they delve deeper into these themes. This workshop addresses key competencies in citizenship, cultural awareness, and digital skills.

The workshop was developed by JEF, in partnership with Blue Bird Docs, Clin d’oeil films & Oetang. This project was made possible with the support of the Flemish Minister of Equal Opportunities, World House West Flanders, deMens.nu, la Direction de l’Égalité des Chances de la FWB and DGD Belgian Development Cooperation.

During the Youth Film Festival, you can participate in a brand new festival workshop, where the students will work together with a film professiona When you look at things from a different angle, the shape changes. Mixologist is an interactive table that allows you to explore and mix various worlds. You do so by moving and combining three real objects. Clicking the objects together opens up new worlds. Film in hospital JEF wants to give all kids the opportunity to experience the Youth Film Festival Antwerp. That’s why we stream short and feature films selected from the participating countries, so kids with limited mobility can enjoy them from the comforts of their bed.

JEF’S MISSION A diverse range of youth films broadens the perspective of children and young people. This offers them opportunities to better determine the world they want to live in. That is why JEF makes youth film available to exhibitors, and ensures visibility and accessibility to a wide and diverse audience, at schools and in leisure time.

Due to its active role in network organisations, JEF is the youth film contact for policy makers and the (inter) national film industry. At JEF, children and young people find a place to create, experience, and critically review film together. For and by youngsters is one of the central mottos throughout the JEF organisation.

WHAT IS A JEF FILM? JEF is the guide for high-quality children’s films. JEF’s interpretation of the word “high-quality” includes the following: We provide films for all ages: from toddlers to teenagers and young adults. This does not mean that our films are only interesting for children. It is important to JEF that everyone can enjoy our films, both young and old.

We do not want to patronise children. They can also handle topics that the mainstream culture and media barely deal with. To us, children’s films are not only films that are initially meant for young people, but in particular films that will be interesting for a young audience without age limit.

We are constantly looking for a great diversity in genres, formats, themes and styles that will surprise and challenge this wide-ranging target audience. Despite the fact that the variety of our films depends highly on international production, we are still striving for a balance between animation and live action, fiction and documentary, drama and comedy, short film and feature film...

In addition, it is important to us that not only our films are varied, but that they also appeal to a diverse audience.

We look for films with relevant and current topics that are in line with the daily experience of a diverse audience, topics that broaden their world view and give the audience the opportunity to decide what world they want to live in. Films that deal with original topics are refreshing to us. We select films that preferably avoid stereotypes and that aim for sufficient gender diversity, both for the characters and for the creators.

The selection of our films always complements or reinforces the market: we bring films to an audience with the goal to broaden the existing supply on the market. We also support films from other distributors that fit into our vision, by bringing them to a broader audience through a deepening film experience.

We strongly focus on offering and programming European films. However, we also like to keep up with the productions of other continents. By means of our international network and thorough market prospection we stay on top of things.

We are looking for films with a trademark from the author: to us, the desire to make the film, the authenticity and the craftsmanship of the film maker outweigh the commercial potential or the size of the production. For these reasons, we closely follow the path of some filmmakers that we want to keep connecting to our organisation. Especially Flemish film makers who engage in making films for a young target audience. In this way we lay the foundations for a tradition that we can keep building on.

JEF’S FILM AND GAME LITERACY: THE MODEL JEF uses film and games to awaken the critical, cultural, creative and socio-emotional competencies of children and young people. These compentencies are important, especially in our mediatized and image-oriented society.

We bundle our vision on this in our model Film and game literacy.

With this model we want to inspire you. It gives you insight into how we work and hands you tools to stimulate film and game literacy in children and young people - as a teacher, parent or supervisor in youth work. In this way you can build together with JEF on the creative and resilient attitude of children and young people.

WHY? Media are woven in your everyday lives. We use media to learn, to work, to play, to communicate and to relax.

Accourding to communications scientist Mark Deuze, we therefore not live with, but in media.

Our mediatised society provides a continuous stream of images. These images come our way via broadcasters and algorithms. But we are not only consumers of images.

Today, everyone carries around a camera and can create media.

This relatively new situation creates challenges in the education of younger generations. Not only to fortify them against the dangers of these media. But especially to explore how they can relate to these media in a positive, healthy and creative way.

How can we encourage children and young people to consciously consume and create media, telling relevant and beautiful stories about themselves and the world?

FOCUS ON FILM & GAMES JEF once started with a focus on film literacy, but we are now expanding this to games as well. After all, film and games share the unique and powerful combination of moving image, sound and language. → Film and games are forms of art, but are also used in entertainment, journalism and social media. → Both media share many techniques in the production process. → They both have a great impact on the recipient. They hold up a mirror and can lead to greater understanding and empathy. They can guide our view and form opinions. Therefore, it is important to teach a healthy critical attitude.

JEF focuses on film and games in various appearances and genres.

Film: live action, documentary, animated film, vlog, propaganda, VR film, etc.

Game: platformer, puzzle, VR game, action, strategy, RPG, co-op, etc.

HOW DOES JEF WORK TO SELECT AND PROGRAM GAMES? The model focuses on five elements of film and games:

THE STORY. What is it about? What is the creator’s view of the subject? Who are the characters? In what socio-cultural, historical or political setting is this film set?

THE CINEMATIC IMAGERY. How do I interpret this scene? What is the visual style?

What do the graphics look like? What impact does the editing or any cutscenes have on the viewer? What significance does the use of color take on? Does the consistency of cinematic choices convey a particular vision?

THE PROCESS. Who is on the set? What tasks are to be divided? What happens after shooting? What steps must I take to make a game or film? How will the film/game be distributed? Where can I find interesting films/games?

THE TECHNIQUES. How are visual effects created? How do you handle a camera? How does the stop-motion animation technique work? How is the gameplay? How is the code of the game written? How is the audio put together?

THE INTERACTION. How do you interact with other players or with the virtual world? Do you experience the game from first-person, second-person, third-person, top-down or isometric? How do you experience the movie?

FILM AND GAME COMPETENCIES Games and films hold u a mirror through which we look at ourselves, each other and the world. They are powerful media that guide and expand our view. They challenge us to be critical and resilient and stimulate our creativity. For example, they can even encourage us to make our own films or games.

In short, with film and games, JEF works on four types of competencies:

CRITICAL COMPETENCIES ❶ You appreciate films and games as forms of art and communicate media, and you can analyze them according ot content and technical components. ❷ You can reflect on the vision of the creator, and you can test this against your own frame of reference. ❸ You reflect on the impact that certain technical choices have on the viewer/gamer. ❹ You know where to find and consult legal films and games. ❺ You can give a personal and well-founded opinion about a film or a game, and you are open to the opinions of others.

CULTURAL COMPETENCIES ❶ You are open to different forms and genres, and you can choose from them. ❷ You develop greater cultural awareness by being open to the specific cultural context of the film/game, and you gain knowledge about these themes. ❸ You increase your empathy with an open attitude, and you can be touched by the film or game. ❹ You can articulate your own context and cultural background in relation to that of the film and/or game. ❺ You are open to and you can relate to other people’s reflections on the film and game.
